TOMO Restaurant in Ottawa

The new menu is a massive improvement. Would rank it in the top tier for sushi in the city. The Hamachi Jalapeño is a must to try! Great service and a nice and quiet ambiance.

The food was top notch! I ve had sushi all over Ottawa and honesty this place takes #1. I was very impressed with the food and service. I ve ate here many times before and they keep improving their quality and menu.

i do not like the new menu at all. they removed all the sushi rolls and added some random fish. I miss the classics like the kiss roll and california roll. I hope they add the classics back to the menu. reply: no i will not be removing my review since i did dine with your new menu and this is simply me and my friends thoughts on the new menu you guys have. I do understand the desire to rebrand and switch up the menu but i simply don t understand why you guys would have the need to remove the very much loved sushis and add only 6 options with very niece ingredients that don t even sound like sushi. thank you

Spent such a great night, Callie was amazing! Such great service and never had a time where we weren t taken care of! The food was also amazing! I would definitely recommend.

We have been going to Tomo since opening and the new and renovated Tomo wont disappoint. The delicious and carefully created new menu will completely amaze you. The quality of the ingredients and the combination of flavors make Tomo 2.0 worth every dollar.

I ve been a long-time fan of Tomo, having frequented it when I lived in the Market, and I m thrilled with their recent menu revamp. The new offerings are a true refresh, with elevated dishes that reflect top-notch quality. The flavors are complex, and the food practically melts in your mouth. There s something for everyone, with options that stand out as unique and unlike anything else in town. Tomo is the perfect place for a night out, whether youre with friends or on a date. The cocktails are fantastic, and the vibe, complete with great music, enhances the overall experience. I highly recommend it a truly memorable dining spot!

Great service. Some of the best sushi youll find in Ottawa. Lovely ambience. Awesome for groups and date nights.

We had a really bad experience tonight. The sushi tasted good, however the rice was undercooked and the pieces were super tiny for the price we were to pay. The diet coke tasted like water, and they did not have any cans. My friend ordered a wok style fried rice which the waitress forgot to order from the kitchen. To be honest she apologized for us, but still, we had to go out straight to Burger Factory across the street to have another dinner. I dont recommend this place. Too expensive, too overrated for the taste. Also, opening hours say open until 11, but we were welcomed with please note we close at 10 30 :)

The place has a great atmosphere if you go as a couple or bunch of friends for lunch or dinner. I went there with my family and it was hard to satisfy all ages with food choices. Nevertheless the restaurant and service are good.

Got the octopus carpaccio and a shrimp tempura roll. Roll was great, but the octopus was a little chewy and lacked flavor. Mocktail was excellent. The southeast Asian fusion seems interesting but there felt a lack of identity and definitely balance. 3 stars indicate the excellent service and unique dish design but lack of refinement and high price was the let down. Side note too dark.

The waitress with a tattoo on was very rude. When my father asked if they have fries, the waitress interrupted him and said no, not in a Asian restaurant I found her attitude unnecessarily rude. I also don t recommend their steak. It was so small, plain and overpriced. By the time the waitress brought him a steak knife, My father almost finished his steak. When my sister asked if the steak is coming with anything else such as mash potatoes, the waitress said it is only steak and the way she spoke to my sister was very passive aggressive. I also did not like their Tomo sushi and spicy salmon sushi. Their food was overpriced. I will make sure to not come again.

Its a nice place but i do have to admit is way to overpriced even if you just order a regular plate and 1 drink.

Had a disappointing experience tonight. Good food marred by the service. For context, we were walk-ins and were told that we would have to vacate our table by a specific time (roughly 1.75 hours after arriving). That is fine, we agreed to it. What came after was: a table that wasnt provided utensils until 5 minutes after the first food arrived; our requested mains brought a couple minutes before our apps; plates, bowls, and glasses being taken swiftly while still being used (and visibly containing food/drink); and finally the restaurant being converted into a club event 30 minutes into our seating, including very loud music and hyper-dimmed lights. We thought we were going to give our table up to a reservation, not an event that was starting up 30 minutes into service. That communication would have been helpful. The service was crude, overly quick, the server couldnt hear us properly over the obnoxious music that started playing. It felt like we were being rushed out an hour before the communicated time to vacate. We ultimately barely stayed an hour. Its a shame. The atmosphere was very pleasant (until it wasnt), the restaurant looks good, the food I think was good but could have used some time to savour it or have one course separated by the other. It almost ruined an impromptu date night, sadly. We would have preferred to just be told that we couldnt be accomodated, instead of wasting time and money on a bad experience.

It was fusion sushi restaurant North Americanized sushi. The ambiance of the restaurant is great. The taste was okay. I know better ones in the other cities of Canada but in Ottawa, probably it will within top 3 I would say.

Came in Saturday for a girls night out, had a fantastic experience. Our server Catherine was amazing, probably the best service weve ever had. Definitely would come back again!

Went for a late night bite, and I would like to go back again to get the full experience. We had sushi, pad Thai, gyoza, and drinks. Dietary restriction labels on the menu would be a nice addition.

Vegetable gyoza was absolutely delicious! You should pass on the Pad Thai. Flavourless and not worth it, was a huge disappointment.

I had an incredible time at Tomo! The atmosphere was electric, with pulsating beats and vibrant lights creating a lively ambiance. The standout was undoubtedly the bartender, Justin. His mixology skills were top-notch, and he crafted the most delightful drinks. The combination of great music, Justins expertise, and the overall vibe made it a night to remember. Highly recommend!

Good restaurant and reasonably priced sushi

Good quality sushi for a reasonable price. We waited a bit long to be seated (we had a reservation), but all service following that was impeccable. Our waitress was kind enough to give us recommendations from the menu as first timers to Tomo, and was very pleasant. I do wish they had dessert options, however, as following sushi up with a mango or green tea ice cream has always been a favourite.

I expect more Japanese dishes option but it turned out it is more of a Japanese fusion pub with limited options of food. However, the food quality was not bad. Their beef tataki was decent. But their a other octopus carpaccio dish was prepared very similar to the beef tataki. Their Bao (bun) was good although not very Japanese. Their fried rice was surprisingly very good although not Japanese. The rice was not soggy and it was fried some some flavourful taste (I was guessing maybe butter or duck fat). Their squid tastes good. It was not over grilled or hard to bite. I always enjoy this dish. Sushi they only have Maki roll and sashimi is only available during weekend (I did not try). Maki roll was just very ordinary. Nothing surprising but not bad. But I will not come back for their Maki. They do not serve dessert (it is a pub anyway)

We had dinner at Tomo last night to celebrate our anniversary and I m already craving everything and wanting to come back! We ordered 4 rolls total and each one was total perfection, I m not sure I can even pick a favourite but the Kiss Roll might have been it! The atmosphere is wonderful, and staff are all so friendly.

We went there to celebrate my wifes birthday. Made reservations and there were 7 of us. They sat us right next to the door where it was cold so we asked to be moved which they did but we had to wait for other customers to finish. Not a big deal. The reason why I gave this place only 2 starts is because the service was super slow. The large group that came well after us were served before we even got our drink orders in. On top of that the food was just okay. The sushi I order was so small it wasnt justified for its price, but the Pad Thai was pretty good, so theres that. After dinner I asked of they do anything for birthdays. They said they dont. What restaurant doesnt do anything special for birthdays? Finally be warned they automatically add an extra 15% (tip) on top of the bill. This was NOT mentioned to me until AFTER we ate and it was time to pay the bill. Not sure if this is legal. Never going back to this joint.

Great staff, service, and food!

This place is nice - it s not really an authentic sushi place, it felt more like a fusion/asian inspired place. Regardless, the fish was really fresh. Both the spicy salmon and spicy tuna had actual chunks of tuna and salmon instead of it being chopped up (like most restaurants do) with spicy mayo sauce. The vibes here were really chill, felt like a laid back bar where people can come and chill together as a group. I loved the interior, it was pretty dim but nice and relaxing. Our server, Erika was amazing and friendly. Super attentive and talked to us alot! We really liked that. Thank you Erika!! I would recommend this spot!

Rolls were exceptional and the squid was top notch! The restaurant itself had a great atmosphere for a night out with a few friends with drinks. Dont drink the sake on your table cause its actually soy sauce! Service was also exceptional as the waitress was attentive to all our needs.

I wish the food was anywhere near as good as the service and ambience. My partners broccoli and beef had 0 flavor and the meat was dry. The Pad Thai made me feel sad eating it. Go for an expensive cocktail and vibe, not for the food

This was, without doubt, one of the most overrated and disappointing dinners I ve ever had. I ordered the Bao to start (it came after the main arrived) which was hardly the puffy pillowy bun that it should have been. To be honest, all you could taste was the teriyaki sauce drenched over the pork belly. The main was steak and broccoli. Perhaps I was imagining too much to have some sort of seasoning on it: there was some sort of gloopy corn-starch based sauce but it was grey and unappealing. The steak strips added were 100% a bulk bag bought frozen and cooked to order. There was no color or sear on the steak. Each of those dishes was $20 which I would not recommend to anyone. The decor was nice, I guess. For the price, I m surprised they couldn t even give us a chopstick rest

What a great find right in the byward market of Ottawa! Great atmosphere, we arrived right at opening hours so it was nice and not too packed, we could talk without loud noises, the terrace is beautiful and the staff is super friendly! Deborah was our waiteress, verry nice, attentive to our needs, knew the menu and was knowledgeable with our questions. The food was just divine and sooo delicious! The fried rice blew us away, sushis were to die for, and the miso soup so good, the veggie potsticks were amazing as well!! We highly recommend!! What an awesome spot!! Trendy, clean, urban, upbeat, with amazing art works on the walls, original designs with the sake bottles as light fixtures, beautiful!! Prices are super reasonable! Check it out!

Quaint little sushi spot in the Market! I definitely think the quality at Tomo is much higher than the average Japanese fare, though it doesn t rival the likes of Suisha or KaTO and is a bit on the expensive side. However, I highly recommend the tataki it might be my favourite that I ve tried anywhere in the city ! It s the perfect amount of rich and savoury, combined with the tart sweetness of their ponzu sauce and garnishments. I d be glad to come back to Tomo again in the future to try out more of their menu.

When I walked in loved the art work on the walls and love how they designed the place. The server was very friendly and helpful. She was able to suggest two thing that ended up being really good. food is good but nothing special, a lot of the dishes were very bland and very underwhelming. extremely expensive for what you get. our server was so nice but because of how understaffed they are, at least from how it seemed, the service wasn t good. this has nothing to do with the servers, it has to do with the management. our server was very sweet and tried to be as attentive as possible but it just wasn t possible as i noticed she was serving at least 1/3 of the whole restaurant, and it was completely packed. it was a friday night, management should know to put more servers on instead of having their servers run around non stop unable to give good service because they have to attend to so many people. i feel bad for the servers because it was obvious that if they were able to focus on less tables, they would have been able to provide better service. it took us 30 minutes to even be able to ask for the bill, after being long done our meals. water wasn t filled once, we only had 2 chopsticks for 4 people, etc. once again it s not their fault, it s the managements fault. once again food was good but i wouldn t go back. truly nothing special and crazy prices for what you receive. drinks are also extremely mediocre, at best. the restaurant decor was nice, and it seemed clean from what i saw. overall, definitely not a place i d recommend to others as im sure there s much better places to get sushi/japanese fusion in the area, and probably at a better price.

I m very disappointed in the bouncers at the front. It was one tall Arab guy and a shorter black guy on Friday august 18th. I walked up to the door at midnight and they asked me why I m coming inside. I m obviously coming for a drink and enjoy the scenery. He then asked me if I ll be buying a bottle. I responded by saying that I m not sure yet I have friends in the club I will see once I go in. Then he replied my boss don t want to let no more guys in if they re not buying bottles. I looked at him and said buddy I m coming to spend money. You re really denying me entrance? He smiled and then said ok Tip me 20$ and pay 20$ at the door and you re good. I wanted to go see my friends so I paid his tax! Once inside I saw my friends bought a drink then felt so insulted that I couldn t even enjoy myself so I left right after one drink. I walked out and spoke to the black guy and told him I wasnt impressed and that he shouldn t be ok with this. His response was bro that wasn t my call! I ve been to Tomo plenty times in the past and loved it. I m so disappointed.

Great spot in Ottawa for sushi! The atmosphere is really great. It s nice and dim with Great music playing in the Evening before it turns in to a club . The food is great and high quality. I didn t stick around for the club time as it isn t really my thing but overall looked like the crowd coming in was a bit older and more professional.

It s unfortunate that despite all the good reviews here we had a terrible experience in this place. We were a group of 10 . From the Poor management , poor service and cold food , then 1 hr wait to pay for the bills that all got mixed and none of us paid for what we actually ate! we ended up paying because we couldn t wait any longer !!!! Manager never stepped in to help the new server !! When we spoke to him he kept apologizing !! Your apology doesn t fix our horrible experience at your restaurant!!! It s a shame !! I do not recommend this place to anyone!! Would never go back again !!!

A very disappointing experience at TOMO. The service was poor, food was cold, wait times were ridiculous. Manager did nothing. We were not offered dessert or other drinks. As a former hospitality manager- I can say this; there was significant lost revenue, due to the poor service and lack of attentiveness. Our bills were wrong. We waited one hour to pay. It was a very frustrating situation, that ensured no one from our table of 10 will be returning to tomo.

Below average food. Had chicken fried rice, which was ok but not worth the price. One of the sushi rolls was not fresh but the server took it away and didnt charge us. Two stars for the food. But compliments to the service and ambience.

Had a really great meal! It was a chilly fall day and their warm Sake hit the spot, the spicy squid goes so well with it! Tomo rolls were yummy too! Staff were attentive and helpful. Definitely worth a visit.

Our Panda game-day activities came to an end when a Tomo bouncer embarrassed us with his ignorant comment and nasty attitude. We were 3 (basically sober) grad students from O.U. trying to meet our friends in Tomo the night of October 1st (the Panda game) around 11:30pm. My friends had never been in Tomo before, so we asked the bouncer politely if the two of them could take a quick look inside before paying the $10 cover fee. Mind you, we were only planning to stay for about an hour, so we wanted to make sure it d be worth it! After our request, his entire demeanor towards us changed. He assumed they had an issue with paying the $10 when really, they just wanted a look inside before doing so. His exact words at one point were, this is a high-class bar, and I can tell when people are high class Insinuating we couldn t afford being there. We were all taken aback by his comment and decided to leave. The whole vibe was thrown off after that interaction, and we ended up heading home. I couldn t believe that such a fun day ended on that note. We felt humiliated and I expected more from Tomo, the high class bar. Lol. For descriptive purposes, this bouncer was on the left-hand side when you re facing the bar and he s about 5 5.

I had a great meal here with my family. The food was delicious and the service is wonderful. Id definitely recommend trying it out if youre looking for a nice night out.

Place was very unwelcoming. Bad service, sat beside a very loud speaker. Sat for close to 15 mins with no service at all, so we left. Left a bad taste in mouth, and didnt even get food.

I don t have anything to say but amazing. I went for a birthday dinner for my gf and we splurged, we got the wagyu, aburi sushi platter, the pad Thai, and a few rolls. The Wagyu was phenomenal, the pad Thai was great. The sushi flavour wise was amazing however the rolls were a bit loose. The ambiance was great and the staff were friendly.

We ate there this summer, honestly this restaurant is one of the best I have tasted. The cuisine is refined and original, we ate a series of sushi, makis... and all were light, tasty and delicious!!

Went to Tomo on a Friday night with a group of friends from out of town, hoping to spend a good time and have a nice dinner regardless of the bad reviews but what a disappointment. First, the table we were given was dirty and sticky. We had to ask our server twice before someone came and cleaned the table. The quality of the food was really disappointing, the sushis were cold and sour (too much vinegar added), the grilled squid was served raw inside. To top all of that, when it was time to leave, we waited over 30 mins at the coat check before the lady found our coats after we asked to speak to the manager, Nara.

I love eating here so much! The quality of the food is actually outstanding and the music is always so good. If you re looking for a cool place for date night, or girls night, this is definitely the place!

The best sushi in the city!! I ve dinned at Tomo 20+ times, the ambiance is great and the service is always amazing (friendly and knowledgeable staff). Tomo has the best sushi in the city. The food is always 10/10 and the cocktails are amazing. My favourite is the Sake-To-Me. Great spot for a date night or birthday celebration. If youre looking for good music they have a dj that plays later in the night.

Love the food, ambiance and experiences offered at TOMO! The fried chicken is to die for, though my favourite dish to have is the Steak Tataki (amazing at the bar with a dealer s choice drink ;) ) Staff is attentive and accommodating, and always ensure you have a great time, day or night!

Was there celebrating my friend Marc s birthday, we got bottle service and drinks / shots. Service was impeccable and was treated like a real VIP! Marlena was very attentive to our needs, and shows us an amazing time. Prices are reasonable, music is on point too!
