My brother was in from New York for a quick business trip and we wanted to have a nice dinner and catch up. Where do you go when you want to show your big brother that Ottawa can hold its own against the Big Apple? ...North and Navy of course! First of all the location is great, central and very understated. Just an old brick house just west of downtown. We had a small private room that reduced the volume and let us chat comfortably. The server was exceptional. Clearly well trained and engaged to provide an exceptional experience. She was kind and engaging in a uniquely Canadian way and had an encyclopedic knowledge of the menu and the wine list and was just a genuine pleasure to interact with. For the food, we tried a little bit of everything and there just arent enough superlatives to describe how great it was. the little additions to the beef carpaccio, the subtle variations of mushroom flavours in the pasta, and the Florentine style steak was a work of art. The prices correspond to the food quality and service excellence but compared to the declining standards in many other places, North and Navy under promises and over delivers. If you are looking for a memorable experience for a special occasion I could not recommend it more highly. Thanks to all the staff at North and Navy.

Was generously gifted a gift card however server said that value left would simply be gone regardless of price of meal. So lost value apparently this was not policy according to management but at this point what can a person do the money is gone..

Excellent menu, learned servers, attentive service and excellent food quality. One of the best high end Italian restaurants in town.

Good food served in this restaurant. Menu is kept simple with a few options for antipasti, primi and secondi. Certains plates were missing flavours and others lacking balance. Staff is nice and friendly. Service can be a bit slow.

Really Disappointed. We paid 200$ for two persons but the food was too bland. Ordered couple of items and honestly didn t find any wow factor in any main course. Only appetizers were nice. Serving size was really small. Server was nice but Its painful to remember that we paid this huge amount for an average meal.

I do not get the hype. I ve been here twice and both times have been underwhelming. The food is good, but at this price point I d expect more complex flavors and honestly just a bit more food. The cocktails are boring and the service is a little stiff. Overrated :(

I was able to grab a last min reservation and we went in for dinner. The service was good. The atmosphere was warm and cozy but there were a group of women who were extremely loud (atleast almost for an hour) which was turn off. Coming to the food, we ordered the squash with yogurt and it was delicious and immediately set the bar high and upped my expectations. We were excited for our next dish which was a huge let down. We had Corzetti with butter and walnut. It lacked flavour, texture and everything that a pasta should not be. (Few pieces of walnut here and there and a few mint leaves). The other dish was mushroom porchetta which was again smaller in portion and a mediocre dish. I really expected a lot more based on their reviews and it being one of the top 100 restaurants in Canada. Most of the people at the restaurant were celebrating but we went mainly for food which was a let down and it was too expensive for the quality and quantity.

Fantastic service and food. A little slow, but that s to be expected. Received a complimentary tiramisu for a guest s birthday and server explained what each item on the menu consisted of. The room was a bit dark so we were all feeling tired at 8pm.

Excellent restaurant. One of the best Ive ever been to. Comprehensive knowledge of wines as well as a large collection, staff are extremely knowledgeable and genuine. The food is even better. Cant say enough good things, this restaurant is just incredible.

Absolutely wonderful! European atmosphere, very pretty dishes, cozy atmosphere, excellent food, the waitress is absolutely competent and takes the time to explain the dishes, and recommends the wine pairing. A very nice place!

What an incredible experience! Everything was amazing: Sebastian, the server knows his stuff and was just a gem, the food is wow, beer options top notch and the wine was delicious. I can t recommend this restaurant enough - absolutely incredible.

Very good. Food deserves its accolades, you won t be disappointed. The wait between courses was a touch long, but that s forgivable considering the type of dining it is.

Waaay overrated for what it is ...! Veery small menu ,no options , and what kills me is that i have to listen to Jocelyn my waiter for 20 m explaining what every plate means since they didnt provide any explanation for the weird names of each dish( shishito a la plancha !! Cicheti !!! Lardo and walnut corzetti!! Portions are veery small For the price ..! Risotto was too buttery ...! Butternut ravioli had 4 peices ravioli and peices of raw squach !! Halibut at 51 $ was absolutely ridiculous in terms of size it had 4 bites a burn potato layers and a hard to chew cabidge ...! See pictures ! And to make the whole experience more awkward my waitress just asked me Do u know tiramisu..!!! Like if i am coming from the moon ! Atmosphère was weird .! Too dark ...only some candles here and there...every one is using their light in the phone to read the menu !had to do the same ...i know that darkness cover-up lot off flaws and dirt... And what s with using empty booz bottles for flowers decoration in the tables ! U cant charge 200 dollars for one dish and use empty bottles! Music is very dull and far ..and we left obliged to hear everyone s conversation ! It s a shame that the booz menu had over 15 pages ! And the menu was one miserable page ! After all you are not a michellen chef ! And what they miss to understand is that NOT EVERYONE get out at night for alcohol..LCBO has it all ....! It s about being served a warm nice meal in a good atmosphere..!

I cannot recommend this team, space, and quality of food enough. We had a part of our wedding weekend in their private room. They let me make menu adjustments, pick the wine I wanted, and arrive an hour early to decorate the room. Lauren was so amazing and kept everything moving on time. The food was AMAZING. Amanda & Gabi answered all my emails -- highly recommend!

We had heard great things about North and Navy, and it did not disappoint. The staff was very knowledgeable and helped us select wines, answering all our questions about menu items. The wine list is extensive, and the Negroni I had was fantastic. The food was like nothing I had tasted before. I thoroughly enjoyed the mix of flavors and especially loved the Paccheri Rossa. All the elements of the dish worked incredibly well together, reflecting great care and intentionality, from the sunflower seeds to the nesting of the meatballs in the Paccheri. The atmosphere was a little louder than I would have liked, but otherwise, the experience was excellent. North and Navy offers something very unique that is refreshing and unpretentious. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a unique restaurant experience in Ottawa.

I feel sorry for the server that have to explain every single word written on the menu. A little description of the dish under the «dish name » would be nice for the waitstaff, the guests and for their time spent a the table, poor them. Our server was extremely nice. We were tired, hungry and impatient. «Sorry Katie if I was a little grumpy at first ». Unfortunately to my personal taste, the food wasn t worth the price we paid. Antipasti were fine, the pappardelle verde had an unexpected sweet taste and the beans and white soft polenta garnishing the trout dish was tasteless. The flank steak was over cooked and the whole dish is way too saucy. We barely ate half of our Secondi. Malheureusement we wont give North and Navy a second chance. Thank you for bringing more bread though. Buena Sera.

Really good food! You can tell a lot of thought was put into the ingredients and the overall menu.

It was our first time and we will be back! We shared 4 plates plus dessert which was plenty. I was also impressed that non-alc bottles of bubbly were available for purchase. Our server was very knowledgeable and the chef even came over to check on us. Love the experience.

EXCELLENT dinner, terrific service, extraordinary flavors and presentations. It would have been 5 stars across the board, but ALL their steps and stairs throughout this eclectic house need better illumination, especially for those of us whose vision isnt as acute as it once was. Its actually such a potential problem, Im surprised they havent addressed it. Some discreet lighting, reflective tape, or anything to SEE these steps/stairs would be optimal and much less expensive than a lawsuit.

One of my favourite nice restaurants in Ottawa. Lovely Italian food with fascinating flavours and combos I ve often never had before or seen before elsewhere. The menu changes. They often make their own butter with neat spices and flavours - last night was Venetian spices and orange zest (and a little sugar, I think, to make it pop!) with fresh bread included. Yum! I asked for seconds and they obliged. The Sunday Nonna s special with a lot of people (like over 10) was one of my favourite past dining experiences. I got to try so many super nice dishes that were not available on the regular menu. Less people is still great - but is less dishes. I remember lots of meats, lots of pastas, nice fish years later! I also will never forget the freshly fried smelt with orange slices and flavours. I remember an article about Sophie and Justin Trudeau having a private dinner date here and I thought that seemed fitting of the place and the classy, hot, young, well-off couple :) Vegetarian options: They have some vegetarian options on the menu and are willing to modify many to make them vegetarian. Dietary restrictions: They had options to make dishes gluten free and to remove ingredients and seemed relatively open to that compared to other restaurants.

It was a nice experience but nothing to write home about in terms of amazing food that people will rave about. There is definetly a sense that they are trying new things, but it was like each dish we had was missing something. The chips and dip was delicious and had a flavor profile that was unique. The chips could have been better, they were too fragile and small in my opinion. The ravioli had an amazing sauce but the ravioli itself was laking. The duck was the best main we had as the corn really complemented the dish. It was definetly somethingnto go and try. We found the trout and steak dishes were both misses but were perfectly cooked. Both had issues with the sides as they either made the dish too salty or bland and did not highlight the protein. All in all it was a nice meal but nothing that screamed having to go back to try again, specially for the price. I will at some point be going back to the bistecca as it looked good from afar though.

Went to this dinner for a special occasion with my fiancée, and ultimately came out quite disappointed. First of all, the service was good, extremely friendly staff and they re very thorough walking you through the menu and willing to explain every detail. They re also very accommodating, as my partner doesn t eat pork and they were happy to oblige. Unfortunately I don t go to restaurants for the staff, I go for the food, which is where I was extremely disappointed. Nothing really tasted great, the food was bland and rather uninspiring, which is really unfortunate for the price point. For appetizers, we ordered a fish crudo dish that was completely under seasoned and flavourless, and we also ordered some assorted crostini s which came with 3 different flavours, where my partner and I only really enjoyed 1 each. The biggest disappointment was with the entrees. I ordered a quail dish with some rapini and while it was relatively good compared to the appetizers, extremely lacking in quality for a dish that almost costs $50. My partner got a flank steak with some potatoes, broccolini and potatoes and this was extremely bad. This steak was sous vide, and while the middle of the steak was done well, the outside sear was unfortunately completely burned. All you could taste was the bitterness of the steak, which completely ruined the dish. Thankfully, the wait staff being so great, we let them know that it was burned, they immediately offered a new dish, and comped the steak. The dessert ended up being quite nice, we got an affogato and tiramisu, both were quite delicious. The gelato in the affogato was great quality, and I enjoyed it immensely. Unfortunately, I won t find myself coming back here though. With the comped steak and 20% tip the dinner cost is $217, and for the quality of food that is much much higher than I would be willing to pay. I do hope this place can up their quality again, there s no way they built their reputation off food that tastes like this, there must have been a time that it was better. The staff is so passionate too, it s just unfortunate that the kitchen is letting them down so much. Personally I would not recommend spending your money here, plenty of great restaurants in Ottawa at this price point that can give you better food. Dietary restrictions: They accommodated no pork

A beautiful spot with great food and a wide range of service. This is review is based on our latest and third visit. My wife and I are only able to make it out to places of this caliber a couple times a year and for our anniversary we chose North & Navy. The food is in the top tier that Ottawa can provide (and was very good) but given the price, the dining experience fell short of our expectation and previous visits. The service our waiter provided was far below what wed expect from such a nice place. It wasnt bad but when we pay $250 for dinner and drinks were looking for something beyond the bare minimum of taking our order then bringing us food 25 minutes later. She didnt do anything to make our rare visit our special and we felt as though she saw us as burden. Were just working class folk and not wealthy regulars so maybe she didnt think it was worth the effort. Feeling let down and wanting to leave, we sat at the bar and Im happy to say the experience we had there was a complete turnaround. The bartender was amazing. Attentive, knowledgeable, helpful. She picked-up on the type of drinks we were interested in and gave us a one-off tasting menu, curated by her, just for us. It was truly a unique experience that were still telling our friends about. My wife and I go to would go to a place like North & Navy for a treat on an important occasion to enjoy a chefs cooking and feel like royalty for a couple hours. Part of the visit exceeded this goal and part of it fell short. I wouldnt be against going here again for cocktails. But I know of other places in the city that do awesome cocktails plus have five-star food and overall great service so Id probably patronize one of them first. Absolutely exceptional. This is a place where traditional meets trendy. We were treated so well by all the servers and staff. They were extremely knowledgeable about their menu, dishes, and ingredients sourcing.

Absolutely amazing. In every aspect one of the finest dining experiences we have ever enjoyed. The service was impeccable in attention to detail, and timing, and the above and beyond personality of wait staff. The ambiance was right: a comfortable and relaxed space. Every aspect of the meal was perfection in fusion of flavors and textures, portion, and presentation. We loved the Tomato & Stracciatella antipasti, Pappardelle & Salsa Verde and Red Fife Farfalle & Braised Fennel primis, and the Rainbow Trout secondi. And lastly the Negroni with bourbon and suggested red wine were excellent. Everything superb, and well worth the price of admission!

Felt like I didnt get value for money here. The atmosphere and ambiance was great, staff quite knowledgeable about the menu which makes picking dishes helpful and they did have a pretty good range of foods to cover most peoples tastes. We ordered 2 entrees, 2 mains and shared a desert and even my partner who is not a big eater walked away not fully satisfied... So its hard to feel content when you spend north of $250 and think you got value for money. Yes I know these high end restaurant usually cater to quality not quantity, but there are numerous other top end restaurants in Ottawa that provide a little more balance. So overall I might recommend this place but certainly not to everyone.

My partner and I came here for dinner. We loved the atmosphere and the service was top tier. Our wine glasses or water glasses were always topped up. The staff were super friendly, and our server really took the time & care to explain the items on the menu. We ordered 5 different dishes, and weren t blown away by any of them especially given the price of everything. Risotto was undercooked, the ravioli was thick and the filling was lacking. Overall, the portions were very small. The food wasn t memorable to us. We had really high hopes.

Having spent years in the restaurant business I am generally loathe to give a less than favourable review, but this place really disappointed us. We asked our server if we could order appetizers while we drank cocktails and considered the rest of the menu and the response was I ll be taking the order for everything at the same time with no explanation and a smug smile. We ordered 4 apps, as well as 3 dishes off the Primi menu and 2 Mains for the 4 of us to share. Of those, the only ones we could recommend are the polpette, the cavatelli and the quail. The pasta was undercooked, which would seem impossible for freshly made pasta. The cod was so small that we could not divide it into 4 pieces. It was literally three bites. We asked the server if it was the normal size of the dish (which is $50) and he replied that the portion was the normal size and true to cost given the labour that went into it . It was hot, with very little air movement in the dining area. We would not go back. If you want an excellent meal with top notch service and cocktails, try Riviera. You ll spend the same amount of money for food that is delicious and worth every cent.

Beautiful restaurant but unfortunately the food and the service are both needing improvement. We dined in on Friday evening, July 28th. From the moment we walked in, we were not greeted but instead directly asked if we had a reservation. We sat at the bar, the bartender who was also our waitress was not particularly helpful nor particularly nice. She also confused our order several times. The food was not good, even in the slightest. The combination of tastes were not to our satisfaction. The plates were cheap on the good, more costly ingredients and instead filled with cheap ingredients. The plates were also far too small for the price. We will not be back and seeing how much we spent on the meal, it was not even worth 10% of the price. At this price you expect a good experience with delicious food and drinks, this is not what we got. Unfortunately Ottawa is missing the mark when it comes to delicious and adventive restaurants that cities like Toronto, Vancouver and Halifax are doing so well. So disappointed.

My wife and I went here about 2 weeks ago for a 5:30 reservation to celebrate my wifes retirement. Ill begin by noting that while the food was expensive it was very good and very interesting. We can only say good things about the food. However, we wouldnt have regretted paying what we did if we didnt feel rushed throughout our time there. Our server was nice and quite helpful but seemed like she needed to get right to it - even though we one of the first clients of the evening. As other reviews have noted the place is not bright and with the menu in Italian there was a need for us to understand what our options were - particularly since my wife is celiac and cant eat gluten. They were able to accommodate and while the explanations of the options were detailed and somewhat helpful, the rush with which they were given still left us somewhat confused. While there was adequate time to savour the food between servings, we kept getting the feeling that we shouldnt be lingering. It just seemed like we were only allowed to have our seats in our chairs for a pre-determined amount of time. And thats what was the huge disappointment. When you go to a distinguished restaurant with high prices, youre not paying just for the unique food, youre also paying for the atmosphere and the ability to sit back and enjoy the whole experience. We didnt get that from North and Navy. I know theyre a business, but they should seriously consider allowing/budgeting for their guests - and yes we are guests - to spend more time enjoying the experience North and Navy is offering. So, unfortunately we wont be back. There are too many other good restaurants in Ottawa that are willing to provide their customers with good food AND a relaxed experience. Visited for the first time with my partner last weekend and we were honestly kind of disappointed given all the high ratings this place gets. Of the six dishes we tried, we didn t love any of them - the flavour balance on all of them were off just enough that I couldn t fully enjoy them. The tuna cichetti was too salty (the other two were ok), the mortadella was quite strong and paired weirdly with the lemon aioli (though this might just be a preference thing), the ravioli was a bit tough and was a bit tasteless and understuffed - most of the flavour was just from the anchovies on top, the risotto had too much lemon juice and not enough seafood flavour - I couldn t even taste the mussels, the panna cotta tasted like a very one dimensional chocolate and the tiramisu was too cream-heavy. I will say that the dishes were presented very well and looked fantastic, but the taste did not live up to the visuals. Otherwise, the service was excellent and the restaurant had a great interior design.

Food was top notch, dessert if Im being picky was ok, and can improve... but everything else was delicious. Service was great, we had Jacob as our host, and he knew thr menu well, was very patient as this was our first visit, and made best recommendations based on our questions. I would go back for sure.

We had an amazing meal at North and Navy. Our server was fantastic and very helpful explaining the menu. I started with a seasonal rum punch cocktail which was delicious. For appetizers we had the meatballs and the mostarda. Primi we had the ravioli (highly recommend!!!) and the bigoli. Secondi we had the Fogo cod and a squash risotto (also highly recommend!). Still had room for dessert so we had the tiramisu and a lemon semifreddo. The tiramisu was actually a bit disappointing but the semifreddo was excellent!

Great staff, solid food, extremely expensive. And like I get it, I would certainly pay that much for the like starter courses which were amazing, but things got less exciting and more expensive as time progressed.

We dined here tonight. The waiter was very nice through the meal but before the 2 hours was up, we got kicked out from our table before we could have our coffee. This has never happened to us before in any restaurant! We were shocked to be told to leave now as this table is reserved for other people. It was extremely rude. We had been there once before and found the hostess arrogant, cold and rude but were convinced to come back as the waiter was very nice and relaxed. But this time with being kicked out of our table and the hostess still very cold and rude, we are NOT coming back. We don t recommend this restaurant to anyone. There are places with great food and friendly staff that welcome you warmly and treat you with respect no matter how busy they are. The food here is extremely expensive for the portion that you get. Go somewhere where you can relax and enjoy a leisurely meal with staff that are not rushed, rude or stressed out!!!

This isn t your typical red sauce Italian place. If you like spaghetti and meatballs and chicken Parmesan, this is not the place for you. If you like authentic homemade Italian food, you will love it here!

Sublime experience. We were on the small terrace to the side of the restaurant: it was really cute (although I advise you to wait until sunset for some tables). The food: Italian, delicious, perfectly seasoned; the sauces are memorable. Great dessert menu. Impeccable, fast and friendly service. Inside, it also looked super cute. For a memorable experience slightly outside the hubbub of the city center; I recommend.

We went to celebrate our daughters graduation from medical school and let them know in advance. They gave us the best table in the restaurant and every server helped to make her feel special. The food was fantastic (we shared the Florentine steak), cocktails superb and they had a great, reasonably priced wine selection. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone.

I regret to say that my visit to this restaurant was far from enjoyable. The ambiance was uninviting due to the overly dark setting, making it difficult to even see our meals, which, incidentally, did not meet our expectations in terms of taste or presentation. The staff did not help matters; they were impolite and made us feel uncomfortable for wanting to take pictures, which only added to the negative atmosphere. Overall, the experience was disappointing across the board, and I would advise others to steer clear.

If all the rich people have fled this country, all that serving them will vanish, and nobody get to experience a little bit of luxury, even occasionally. This has been my thoughts that night sitting in an expensive restaurant. Downvote me if you want. Life is about experiencing. Whatever you gain on earth you cannot take with you when you eventually have to leave.

Went here for a friend s birthday dinner and was really disappointed. Considering the high rating I had high expectations for the food but was really let down. Meatballs were extremely tough and WAY too salty and my pasta was undercooked. I would have complained but I didn t want to make a scene during her birthday. I will say the service was excellent and the general vibe of the place (decor etc) was really nice. But there is much better tasting food in Ottawa for the same price

I had very high expectations for this place since it is rated so well. The food was very underwhelming, the meatballs were WAAY to salty and were very hard.. I also ordered a pasta dish that was also very salty and underwhelming. The beet butter served with the bread was too sweet. Each person of our party of six didnt love their food/drinks/dessert. Unfortunately, the sweetest and salt overpowered the flavour of many of the dishes. My favourite thing about this restaurant is how nice their silverware is...

We had great service. Laura was exceptional in her duties. It seems the menu was made for food connoisseurs as there were no descriptions of the ingredients. As a non-Italian individual, it was hard to understand the menu. Certains dishes were good. But not worth the advertised prices. The bread s crust was burnt and tasteless. The dishes can be shared and easily enjoyed with a partner. Overall, we found it was not worth the price. The atmosphere can get very loud, it was eventually hard to speak with my partner. Loved the atmosphere and service. However, the antipasti mortadella starter was exactly like ordering coldcuts - nothing special and for $10 definitely not worth the price. Capaccio would have been a better menu offering. The swordfish dish for the secondi was unique and very tasty and so i would recommend that dish for something truly different. The wine we chose did not disappoint . Dessert - panacotta - nothing special and my shot of expresso was literally a table soon full in a fancy fine bone china tea cup. I would have expected a bit more for a simple expresso. Overall, very underwhelming and would not go back - also the lighting was a bit too dark which made it difficult to read off the menu. Staff was superb. The food should have matched the service.

If you are a good cook you will be disappointed. We ordered the bistecca which was fine but the potatoes were overly spiced and unrecognizable and the carrots were tasteless and the bread was dry. We ordered the tiramisu and it was a bomb ( inedible ) ( not at all like the foto on the website). The wine was fine but the music was unpleasant and too loud but it was turned down for us. Mixed feelings. Probably a 3.5/5 if I could give a half star rating. Visited on Valentine s Day and both the food and the service were a little underwhelming. I found the scallop crudo to be very very very fishy, and this is coming from someone who enjoys raw fish and seafood on a regular basis. Pasta dish was creative, but a bit too sweet for my liking. Tournedos Rossini was good, and probably the best dish of the day. Dessert was nothing special. The atmosphere was cozy and romantic which carried the night. Overall I had a good time but I m not sure if it was the food that made it good. In all honesty, I think the restaurant is a little overrated for what it is.

Such a beautiful, warm lil restaurant, which such an interesting, changing menu. The drinks were amazing, the food plating was absolutely top notch and the food itself was delicious as. Our server Malcolm, was also so nice and did help us by tweaking the menu a lil bit to suit our preferences. Highly recommended.

Disappointing, totally overpriced. The food is not bad but does not meet the price. 50 dollars for a plate with a small piece of duck and some vegetables is not reasonable. The menu does not offer many options, which is not necessarily bad, but if you want to end your dinner feeling filled, you need to go through three curses and spend 200 dollars per person.

Food was just ok. Some hits but too many misses for the price. Oddly most of our dishes were bland despite the long list of ingredients our server had to rattle off. The polpette and the bread were a promising start. Meatballs were tender (if a touch under seasoned) and the tomato sauce was excellent. The bread was beautiful. The duck prosciutto was ok but a bit dry. It lacked the luscious texture of traditional pork prosciutto served with good olive oil. The agnolotti was bad. The dough was tough, the celeriac filling was bland and didn t have the nuttiness and fragrance I was expecting. The accompanying lamb sugo was not good. I couldn t detect any lamb flavour and it was way too sweet, especially with the addition of candied marmalade pieces(???) which did not work at all! Main dish of pork tenderloin medallions was well-seasoned , though only one of the three pork pieces was tender and pink to my liking. The other two pieces were a bit over cooked. None were melt-in-your-mouth which I would have expected (and regularly achieve at home). The accompanying polenta was nicely creamy. The cod main really let us down. It was seriously over cooked, tough and chewy, bordering on cottony. Sauce was fine but did not taste of corn. We also wished there had been a more toothsome side than just a small mound of raw pea shoots. Our mains came to the table lukewarm which was also disappointing. Having travelled across northern Italy, we didn t feel like any dish brought us back there with the exception of the bread and the polpette. Cocktails were yummy, as was the wine. Decided to cut our losses and skip dessert. Service was good. Decor/ambiance was lovely and inviting.

Our experience was significantly marred by Amanda, whose priorities seemed more focused on the quick turnover of customers rather than finding constructive solutions to our concerns. Although we had reserved seats at the bar, upon arrival, my wife found the counter too high for her liking. When she brought this to Amandas attention, she showed little interest in exploring alternative seating options to enhance our experience. Upon my arrival, I requested a table, and Amanda agreed, but with the condition that we vacate it within 1 hour and 30 minutes in case the reserved customers arrived. This proposition was quite surprising, and when I pointed out that we couldnt guarantee finishing our meal within that timeframe due to kitchen timings and our order, Amanda remained inflexible. Despite my attempts to explain the constraints her request imposed, Amanda persisted in repeating herself, leaving me feeling somewhat frustrated. When I reiterated our desire not to be rushed through our meal and emphasized that we werent there to eat as if in a fast-food establishment, she even accused me of raising my voice, a somewhat common reaction in such situations, unfortunately. Fortunately, the bartender understood our predicament and assured us that we would have ample time to finish our meal without feeling rushed. If I could offer Amanda one piece of advice, it would be to prioritize customer needs over strict adherence to seating schedules. Her attitude and lack of flexibility marred North and Navys reputation. Having stressed and unaccommodating staff in an already tense restaurant environment is detrimental to customers. Also kudos to our server (who speaks french) who made the est of our evening wonderful with great pairing advices for our food selection.

This is my honest and unbiased review, I really love food and want to give honest feedback about my experiences! This place is super cozy and has a very warm romantic aesthetic, perfect for a date night! The server was very friendly and accommodating. I was a bit underwhelmed by the food for the cost. I have been to other fine dining establishments in the city and you get way more for the cost. My partner and I had four dishes as recommended and were still hungry so we got a bite to eat elsewhere on our way home which is not what anyone wants to do after going out for lavish dinner. We loved the starters (meatballs and carne crudo) but the pasta was a bit plain and even for one person it was such a small portion. We kept being offered bread for the leftover sauces but I would have rather had more of the pasta, not bread to mop up the leftover sauce. We also got the scallops which I thought were overcooked and had a weird flavour pairing with dill and fennel. The presentation was very nice but the taste did not live up to expectations when looking at the food. I also found the menu a bit pretentious, I wouldnt not go to a restaurant if I can easily read the menu so not sure what the goal is when you need to google what certain things are. Last, I had the tiramisu for dessert and thought it was good but nothing I havent had before.

After recommendations from friends, went to North and Navy last night for our anniversary. Seated in the middle section of the restaurant, which isnt very cozy and was quite bright - whatever. And the food was quite good, the flan excellent, the pasta good, the lamb shank intimidating and came floating in a bed of soupy risotto. Our waitress, however, was impatient, unfriendly, and charmless. She rattled off the rather complex menu so quickly, we barely knew what we were ordering. After dessert she asked if wed like anything else and we told her we were finished...not a minute later she slapped the bill and the debit machine onto the table. My wife still had a half glass of wine and we were in the middle of a conversation. Talk about the bums rush, but for a $300 dinner. The service was diner level at best. We wont be back, but will stick to Gia where weve always had both great food and service.

Really enjoyable evening. Service was really helpful and friendly without being overbearing. A little too dark (people using lights on phones to read the menus) but I understand the ambiance they were trying to obtain. The food was really good! Flan was delicate and creamy coupled with the salty crisps made a great starter. The two pasta dishes (walnut and mushroom) were the highlights of the meal! Both completely different dishes but both hitting the mark! The scallops were cooked perfectly and paired well with the rest of the dish. The lamb was tender and delicious but maybe a little over priced for the end result. The panna cotta was amazing and tasted almost like a luxurious Ferraro Rocher and the pistachio gelato was delightfully devilish and rich, perhaps not what you would expect but it was great. Overall I would recommend North and Navy to anyone wanting a higher end meal with touch of Italian homeliness.

The plates sizes are worth the price and the amazing service is the cherry on top. Wine wise, they have some gems in there, trust their recommendations. We will be back!

I went this week to celebrate my birthday. I chose this restaurant based on the online reviews. I found it to be mediocre and pretentious and not worth the money. Northern Italy was not represented.We had the salmon dish that looked like a stained glass window. It was so insubstantial with bits of foam and veggies, but you couldnt really taste anything because you had to scrape the food of the plate- unimpressed. Then, we had 2 secondis. The risotto needed salt and the crunchy flowers and dried mushrooms added nothing to the flavour. The risotto cooking stock was boring. Then the pasta with anchovies was an ugly dish. The sauce was good and basic, but the slivers of anchovies and smatterings of basil strewn on top some flour circles was uninventive and lacking. Then we ordered the duck with spaetzle and kale. Again too little of trying too hard. Although the finger ( very small) of crispy skinned duck breast was flavoured well with ginger and garlic , it didnt save the bland spaetzle nor the soggy kale drowning in the balsamic vinaigrette. The star for me was the blueberry pannacotta - very elegant and the well made cappuccino...it needed a cookie but ok. The restaurant was noisy , we couldnt even hear ourselves speak. The service was ok. Very pricey.

Was really torn between 4 and 5 stars. The ambiance and service was great (albeit I do agree with other reviews it does get loud inside and I had trouble hearing the conversation at the table a few times even on a Monday when the restaurant wasn t full). The tomato and ricotta appetizer was fresh and succulent but really could have been a 10 with some flaky salt on top. I found it was missing the final piece and was just slightly lacking The mushroom risotto was 9/10 phenomenal. The pickled mushrooms really balanced out the richness of the dish. I didn t care for whatever the crisp pebbles (toasted farro? Toasted risotto?) was on top as I found the flavour overpowering. The gin martini I had was very reasonably priced at $12 which I was very pleased with as I find it ridiculous these days that you can t get a cocktail for under $15. Pleasant surprise that I would come back just for that as it was a perfectly made martini. Overall I had a lovely time and would return. I would love to see some spin on some classic, heartier Italian dishes.

Never thought I would say I liked my tortellini better than the dessert, but its true! The $26 tortellini vuoti was deceivingly filling - being a primi its a medium size. I also never though Id enjoy an empty tortellini so much, but its clearly a testament to the quality of the pasta. Very nice plating. Great cheesy sauce, very liquidy and non overpowering, much more subtle than one expects. The $14 panna cotta was pretty, initially thought it was ok the smaller end, but hallway through my meal had caught up with me and was struggling to finish it. It was pretty good, could use more sauce/coulis, overall would try something else. I dont like coffee which the only other two desert options had ($10 affogato, $14 tiramisu). Not overly busy at 8:30pm on a Friday night. Romantic lightning.

Sad to say this place did not live up to the hype. TLDR: expect high prices for small portions lacking flavour and flare. Starting with the menu- each dish is simply listed in a couple words, not always in English, without pictures. Even with the waitress explaining each dish, it was still confusing trying to decide what to order and even resulted in disappointment with the raw scallops, which I had assumed were seared. Some of the dishes were crafted somewhat elegantly, while others were little more than a bit of pasta and meat sparsely scattered on the plate (see tortellini). My biggest disappointment came with the ~$50 steak which turned out to be maybe 4oz at best and was tough!! Overall, this place just doesnt seem to offer much value for the money, especially considering I can buy a bigger and tastier steak from any grocery store for under $10. Worst of all, after spending over $100 for myself between these 3 dishes and a beer, I left hungry.

A few weeks ago my wife and I attended a wine tasting dinner. We had great expectations since NoNa had recently been added to the list of Canadas top 100 restaurants. Our group was hosted in their comfortable upstairs room. The server assigned to our group of around 20 was very good, but she was by herself. The meal, however, was pedestrian, at best. The polpette were tasty, but could have used a bit of basil to brighten the plate. The next dish was another meat-ball dish with pasta, tortellini vuoti. The dish may have been decent, but the kitchen didnt produce it fast enough for our server to deliver it to everyone at the same time. (For the first dish the server had reinforcements, but for this second dish she was on her own.) She served one side of the table and then there was a 5 minute wait before the kitchen had prepared the rest of the dishes and she was able to bring the dishes up for those on the other side of the table. By the time everyone had been served we had a cooled-down plate of pasty pasta and not very interesting, small meat-balls. The dessert was ok, but so unmemorable I cant recall what it was. Overall, not at all what Id expect from one of the top kitchens in Canada. I was left with the sense that other than our very pleasant and helpful server the restaurant could have cared less that it had our group in house. The experience has made me question whether I will be back. We have a group of 10-17 friends that get together every Friday for dinner and have been to NoNa several times in the past. It will be a while before I consider recommending it or venturing to try it. Ill need to see consistent reports of superior food to go along with the service.

As others mention, the place can be loud, the portions are small, more tapas style, but priced high for the amount you get. That said, we loved every dish we tried and realized we left satisfied, not over indulgent. The chef is creative AF!

Every year my girlfriend and I choose North & Navy to celebrate our anniversary, and we have nothing but compliments. The service is remarkable. The waitresses are extremely knowledgeable about the menu and are able to guide our choices with charm and professionalism. When it comes to the cuisine, it is impossible not to praise the meticulous work and attention to detail of the chefs. Each dish surprises with its subtlety, precision and creativity, which really fuels interesting conversations between couples. In summary, we highly recommend this establishment!

Friendly efficient service. Presentation is impeccable for the food. Got the vitello appetizer, the duck main, and the Tiramisu. All were fantastic especially the vitello and tiramisu. The cocktails were good but could be better. Theres only four signature ones, and two of them seem more Mexican than Italian using Mezcal and Tequila. Also less effort into presentation than the food. Nice space and decor.

Food was good, portions a bit small. Halibut overcooked but was still ok. Was a little hot in the restaurant.

When I arrived, the waiter offered me still or sparkling water. It was only after he poured the sparkling water that he informed me that the sparkling option would cost extra. This came as a bit of a shock to start the night. I ordered their Halibut and asparagus and the first time the fish came out it was overcooked, however the server was kind enough to have the dish re done. The second time it came out the Halibut was wonderfully juicy and all the components on the dish complimented each other well. Special attention should be placed on the buerre blanc sauce. Finally, I ended the night with their affogato which was wonderfully creamy and the flavors of the espresso shone through. Overall a nice and pleasant experience.

Drove for 4 hours to Ottawa for the weekend and booked a reservation here using the Dinner App. When we showed up there was a wedding sign out front. We went in at 5:00 and a woman casually said yeah we re closed for a private event, we have been for the last month. After explaining we booked on the dinner app all she said was not sure how that slipped by and continued to fumble with other things to do with no apology or restitution. Terrible staff.

If you know about NONA you are probably reading this to see if theres anyone pretentious enough to say its overrated or not worth of top marks... We went after going to italy hunting for some of the rarer pastas that I had even seen on NONAs website but missed due to roataion. In that time we also heard more than a few people say they are overrated - well, as with a lot of places, Im going to say this is about the clients and who they are more than the restaurant. Like any high end dining spot in Ottawa they have safe options like venison that are expensive and naturally not as interesting... Usually when I see bad feedback about NONA its over those sorts of menu items. But what did you expect? Try something interesting, you are paying $$$ for it. So if you DO try something interesting, especially the season pasta menu, you will be impressed. We went and just ordered every pasta dish until we ran out of options. Try the pasta medallions when they are in season you dont see that stuff often. As a hangout venue I will say the cocktails have really interesting flavours so and its awesome decor wise. So if you are looking to spend real money without booking a year in advance for dining in downtown Ottawa, this is one of the better options.

I was able to enjoy the private room for a private event. We had a set menu with a smaller selection to choose from, but it was three courses. Dont expect massive plates. Portions are moderate but appropriate. I didnt leave stuffed. But I was satisfied. Everything was tasty. They make gluten free options for almost anything. There was an item or two that was very different from non glutenous items. There was a nice selection of mock-tails as well. They definitely balanced that desire to have something still have a bite or alcohol impression without any in the cocktail. I was incredibly glad to see this gem survived the pandemic! I ve been twice on business trips and recommend it to anyone staying in Ottawa long enough to enjoy a dinner out. The food is executed perfectly with highly attentive and knowledgeable servers to match. The cozy atmosphere is equally well suited to. Business or romantic dinner and makes you feel like being served at home by a top notch team. You won t want to leave. Or at least, want to go back asap.

My partners pork-tenderloin was unevenly cooked, dry in some places and pink in others, and my duck came to my plate completely raw; blood on my cutlery after touching. I asked for it be remade, and it graciously was, however I still did not finish my meal, as it was also unevenly cooked; still raw in some places, and my boyfriend and I were unable to eat our dishes together. This was our first time dining with North & Navy and with much excitement upon arrival, we left disappointed and still feeling hungry.

WOW! HIDEN GEM in Ottawa! Compliments to the chefs! The food did not just taste amazing, I absolutely adore adore adore the presentation! Every plate was delicately assembled, with consideration of shapes, colors, and textures. Each bite was like flavors explosion in your mouth! Our waitress Ellen W. recommended great wine to pair with our selection of food and she was on top of everything without us even asking. Great food, great service, great place for a low key but fine dining date night.

Food is just okay. I wouldnt go again. The service is great and the ambience isnt too bad either.

Cozy, comfortable atmosphere. The food was delicious, we had 5 plates between the two of us and every dish was unique and with great flavours. Our server was wonderful, provided great recommendations and explanations of the plates. Highly recommend, and we look forward to going again!

2023-11-02: Ive been many times for lunch and dinner years ago. Its my first time here for the 5 à 7, available at the bar only. The choices for food and drinks were very limited. The paper-thin cold cuts were very pretty but thats all. I dont think wed go back for 5 à 7 again.

Everything was delicious. Fresh ingredients and freshly prepared.

I came in tonight for my second year anniversary. Wow what a pleasure to come to North and Navy! Stefan was the best! His pairings were spot on and same with his suggestion of an additional first course. The food was incredible, the pickled squash and stuffed pasta was mind blowing! Can t say enough about this place everything tasted so good and was unlike any Italian restaurants I ve had before. Once again Stefan was an incredible host he made us feel at home and congratulated us on our anniversary while putting our coats away. We will be back again.

All around great service and dinner ideas in this quaint old house. The lamb was brand new on the menu and did not disappoint one bit(e). Incredible options even if you re not vegetarian - give the butternut squash a try! Highly recommend this treat for yourself and you ll see why it s rated one of Canada s top 100.

Its one of my favorite restaurants so far in Ottawa. Great food, staff, and vibe. The only complaint Id make is the noise levels. Its a bit hard to hear. Also, the bread crust was way too thick and hard to bite through, but that couldve been an off day. Id love to come back and sit at the bar so I can watch the kitchen work or reserve one of their private rooms.

Dinner itself was fantastic although service was really, really slow. Sat at 5:30 PM for a reservation with colleagues and didn t leave until 9:15 PM.

I travel the country quite regularly and this was hands down one of the best culinary experiences Ive had in a long time.

The only table available was at the bar, and the staff noticed I was a bit uncomfortable on the bar stool (6 months pregnant). They brought me a comfier chair and a pillow to rest behind my back - I spent my entire visit super comfortable thanks to this small but unforgettable gesture . I also can t eat gluten, dairy or eggs, and both the chef and our server took great time and care to figure out what they could offer me. The chef ended up going off menu and creating delicious meals to accommodate me. I usually end up getting a slimmed down version of a dish on the menu, but with these generous offers I didn t feel like I was getting XYZ without the Y and the Z. I felt like I got the whole alphabet and it meant the world to me! We eat out fairly often and I ve never had such wonderful treatment, where I didn t feel like a burden at all. I m so grateful for how they took care of us. I can t wait to go back one day . Dietary restrictions: Read my whole review! They will do everything they can to accommodate you. Even my husband had nut allergies on top of my restrictions and they made sure my dishes were nut free so he could try all the fun stuff I was eating .

Amazing dining experience, the food, wine and servers are top notch. Every dish that came to our table was prepared with attention to detail from the plating to the flavors. I definitely recommend North and Navy for special occasions, they really make you feel welcome.
