55 Byward Market Square, Ottawa, ON K1N 1K1, Canada
Really nice stop in the morning: good lattes, a ton of dessert choices, friendly service (with some French!) and Barrack Obama's cookies, what's not to love. Thank you for this mental health pause!
The gingerbread cookie that my sister ordered was so hard, I almost broke a fingernail trying to break off a piece (it was hard as a rock). The cookie lacked the traditional taste that gingerbread should have and when addressing this issue with the produce to staff, we were not helped. Please note these cookies are $5 each! The sugar cookie, while edible, was far from special. I would discourage people from visiting this establishment.
I ordered a cookie here today. I had the reindeer gingerbread cookie. It tasted like dirt, actually I think dirt taste better. I almost broke my tooth trying to eat it. The cookie was stale, I asked the lady if I could exchange it, she was unhelpful and refused. While the restaurant looks like it is Canadian, it’s actually a tourist trap. Save your money and go elsewhere I’m pretty sure Barack Obama spat it out
I visited during a busy long weekend and was impressed with the quick service I received. I purchased a few baked goods, and had to get the famous Obama cookie as well. Staff (bilingual) were friendly and helpful. They microwaved the mini pizza for me, but forgot about it until I reminded them that it was still in the microwave. The location is excellent, and there is a good amount of seating available both inside and outside on their patio. Definitely recommend the visit to anyone considering.
A delightful dessert spot near Parliament Hill and Rideau Canal, offering a prime location and a variety of pastries, cakes, breads, and hot beverages. Last weekend was our first visit, and we’ll definitely be back. We tried the blueberry flan, mango mousse, and blueberry Danish pastry (to go), and everything was delicious and fresh. Prices range from $4 to $7 for most items, which I find reasonable given the quality and the location.
Nice Bakery Cafe in the heart of Byward Market to grab a coffee and or quick snack. Bread and pastries are very fresh but the prices are a tad high and the service is a bit slow unfortunately. It still is a nice place with some patio seating as well to sit and enjoy your brunch.
Such a nice place to sit and enjoy some sweet stuff. There are so many varieties of breads and pastries here. You want to eat all of them. All fresh and tasty. Highly recommended
Excellent place to visit when in Ottawa. Great choice for a mid meal, the sandwiches are just great, well made meat flavour full and bread fresh. The pastries are absolutely great, fresh and of great quality . I did not taste the Obama biscuits which I presume will be good, but I will try them during my next visit.
Almond croissant was really bad and the cup with hot milk tasted like a soap. Cookies are just sweet. Cute tho
Unmissable place Kind staff The chocolatines and croissants are huge. There are toilets on site Paid parking There are tables for eating on site. Fast service
Too good for a French trip the staff is super friendly ines and mejda very welcoming and very helpful Kid-friendliness: Yes very certainly with the delicacies there are wow
Been here before for pastries which were delicious so thought we would stop in for supper. Bought a ham and cheese croissant with cheese on top and a Cajun chicken panini to share. She asked if I wanted the cheese on the croissant melted and I said yes. To my dismay, she threw it in the microwave and it came out a soggy flat mess. The panini wasn t even toasted and it took forever, I honestly don t believe it was on or if it was, not high enough. It wasn t even warm inside. The taste of both sandwiches were so underwhelming. Super disappointed in such a place in a high crowd market, expected way better food.
Amazing bakery. Mini pizzas, foccia and olive oil garlic bread are INCREDIBLE!!! A must do when in Ottawa/Byward Market!!
I usually avoid this place for a number of reasons, but my family was visiting and they wanted to go here. I wish I had said something, first the service was horrible, our soups were dumped into a bowl from a plastic container and warmed in the microwave. They were forgotten in the microwave while other customers were helped. My partner ordered a sandwich that was left on the press for too long, completely forgotten. It was only after we mentioned it that it was taken care of. Secondly I was told my card wasnt working, but it certainly was. I was made to feel like it was entirely my fault and not a connection issue with the machine. Thirdly, food preparation station is used for everything. The place is always filthy, in the ten years Ive lived downtown Ive only ever seen it clean when it was closed.
Located in the center of the byward market. Bustling crowds on the weekends. Has a large variety of sweets and cookies. Kids enjoyed the variety of Halloween cookies available.
Horrible experience. My partner and I were traveling to Ottawa to explore food and places. I have a sweet tooth so this place was a must to visit and I was so excited. There is a good selection of cakes, cookies and breads. However, the place was very disorganized. People who arrived after us were being attended first, even if the other people mentioned it, the ladies at the counter didn t seem to care and kept attending them. The most terrible experience was when I started ordering and the lady grabbed the cake with her bare hands without gloves! When I mentioned to her if she could grab the food with tongs she said it was not necessary because the desserts had plastic on the side and she was not touching it. However, her palm was still slightly touching the top of the cake. Disgusting experience. I didn t order all the desserts I wanted after seeing that. Quality and flavour are not the best and they were pricey for the way they handled the food. I would never come back and would never recommend this place.
Something for everyone. This is a must-stop experience.
The display looks beautiful and very attractive. The staff only made a moderate effort, the croissant with chocolate and almond tasted like it had been there for several days and the cups for our hot chocolate were not washed properly, you could still see the previous ladys lipstick. No thanks! Its better to go to BeaverTails on Parrallelstrasse!
7$ cookies
The cookies were beautiful, but inedible. My daughter who loves sweets said it tasted like cardboard. My other daughter said that they were like dog treats.
We had breakfast on the terrace in this bakery, attracted by the many favorable reviews we had read online. The reviews even mentioned that President Obama came to taste the famous cookies, renowned as the best. However, our experience was mixed: we found the croissants very flat and not flaky enough, and although the cookies were good, Ive tasted better ones elsewhere. In addition, the prices do not live up to the reputation of the place; Its frankly too expensive for what it is.
It s actually wild how much wasps and flies are all over the pastries and desserts.
The pastries were nicely displayed and looked yummy. We ordered cream croissants & they were disappointing to say the least. Dry, not puffy & flaky & no yummy, buttery taste,, not much cream & tasted day old. They were also pretty flat in size once taken out of the case. Maybe they stack too many in there at once. Not what we expected especially at that high price! Definitely not melt in your mouth, Tim Hortons & grocery stores make better croissants .save your $$
The food is good there...
Place was packed for a reason but the service was at least quick. Good food and friendly vibes here. Definitely recommend.
Looks cuter from the outside. Ready made sandwiches, no vegetarian. Breads need to be bought as the whole. Vegetarian options: Absolutely no vegan options for breakfast. No vegan milk listed as options.
Fabulous pastries that bring back childhood memories in France
Crazy busy place on the Thanksgiving weekend. All the food was great.
We enjoyed coffee and pastries here on a crisp fall day. It seems to be a popular spot for tourists but I don t mind that. It has plenty of seating both indoor and outdoor, the staff were all friendly, you can access the inside of Byward Market from the back of the cafe. Kid-friendliness: Kid and dog friendly!
great sandwich and pastry
I don t know if you know this, but Obama visited this place once. Five stars.
Aside from all of the wasp that are perfect for spreading viruses and terrible customer service this place is amazing I love the vibe and energy as well as good coffee. The variety of the food and pastries are great but the quality was not amazing.
Perhaps my memory of this place created greater expectations. I had not been there for some time. A grey day, the overhead doors were closed , trapping the funk of bleach soaked cloths. Ugh. Prices were a little higher than I expected. I had the black forest Danish which tasted like yesterdays. Latte ok. My friends black coffee was served in a melamine cup. Staff seems friendly enough, but I got a tense vibe in general. Sorry for the poor review, but this place could be better, perhaps it was before.
Wasps all over the fruit pastries and inside the display cases. Most croissants and turnovers did not look fresh.
Stopped by for some delicious olive bread. Probably the best in Ottawa! Friendly helpful staff.
Its not the same service and food. Bees and bugs were everywhere on the bread and the cookies. Same person serving food and doing the cash without gloves or washing her hands. Cookies fridge windows are open bugs were there . Never again. Food : 1/5
While the atmosphere, including the massive display of breads and pastries, is eye-catching, the actual quality and taste of the items is far from impressive. There are much better patisseries/boulangerues nearby.
We ate two sandwiches, one chicken and one tuna with unrecognizable taste and only half filled. In the patio we had to scare away the pigeons and birds (which come for the sweets). Anyway, I wouldnt go back
Honestly it is a bakery that is not that good and is milking obamas passage to make profit. I mean I get it but still. The place is dirty and the cookies are not great. When we went the cookies were covered by wasps. I mean a few wasps I understand because its nature. But when I say covered I meant covered like 2/3 wasps every 2 cookies. It was kind of gross. And the lady behind the counter tried to vacum them with the vacum used for the floor and she would touch the cookies with it. Seriously will not recommend or go again.
Poor service, unpleasant staff
had to spend 18 minutes deciding what i want
It is in a very nice, quiet location and the service is friendly and the food is also really good. Kid-friendliness: The service is also very friendly to children
Great location in the Byward market, but it can t be called in anyway a French bakery. The croissant, chocolate croissant and almond croissant can be compared to what we can buy at the grocery store. The Danish pastry was a weak ok, not great. The service was really good and my daughter liked her cookie.
Great fresh bread and other pastries.
Awesome place for the authentic Canadian bakery place.
Dozens of wasps crawling all over the food. Perfect way to spread viruses. Food and safety violations. Need to close doors, place food in glass case, and re-certify by taking safe food handling course. Infestation present.
The food we tried was okay... expensive for what we got we thought. The lemon and cheese Danish was nice. The cheese croissant was disappointing.
Nice staff and cute sweets, bakery. We loved it but too many bees also love the shop
Fresh products but prices have increased compared to last year. We always take at least one trip to Ottawa per year and this area is a sure stop.
I ordered an Obama cookie and it came with a side of bees(wasps??)
Especially the service sucks and the food sucks they dont even worth one star
Handy place to stop with plenty of seating in and out in shade. Drinks good but cakes look better than they taste. A lot of stock so maybe a bit stale? Food
Their was a wide selection of baked goods, but none of the 4 items that we got were fresh or delicious
Lovely place with so much variety to pick from.... Youll struggle to choose! There are desserts and sandwiches and soups so this is somewhere everyone will be satisfied. Service is very friendly and not rushing you. There are a decent number of seats but I can see it might be hard to find a spot during busy weekends. There are bathrooms upstairs for the market building - clean and up to date.
Very rich and beautiful view
Sub-par croissants and overpriced for what you get. You could buy a bag of 5 premade ready to bake croissants for the price of one from this place and it would still be better. Almond croissants were the strangest texture and taste, and the chocolate croissant had one singular piece of chocolate in it. Weird cakey doughy texture to these pastries and it was not even fully baked inside! I wouldn t recommend at all if you re craving a flaky, buttery croissant because these will beyond disappoint you.
Unfortunately the desserts look pretty but they are not good at all. We had a crème brûlée, almond croissant, merengue, and a latte and none of them were good. I think it s just a good location but nothing else. I wouldn t spend my money there. There are much better bakeries in Ottawa.
I bought the Obama cookie and it was good, but I feel like it was a little bit overpriced for the quantity of what youre getting.
Dont go here for the eggs. The cook had no idea how to make over-easy or sunnyside up eggs. Both types came out with hard yolks. I sent mine back twice before getting them sort of yolky, and by then everything else on my plate was cold. Disappointing.
Terribly expensive for what it is and not great food! Its not what it used to be!
We came here for dinner and the area is nice but the cafeteria style food was bland and old. I got sick shortly after eating there, don t know if it s related. The items at the bakery were pretty good. Dietary restrictions: Almost nothing that s gluten free or dairy free.
Absolutely filthy three-day-old brioches, dry and an Oranese whose pastry cream is rancid, never again.
Best variety in the market
Coffee was OK, but the most expensive apple turnover was the worst one I had in Canada - it tasted like being from yesterday- despite being warmed up.
Should have trusted reviews. This place survives solely based on location. Quality is best described as a middling food basics or loblaws bakery. The city markets in other Canadian cities have world-class bakeries, this being so close to Quebec just makes it sad. Almost everything we had was not baked that morning and even if it were, it just wasn t good. Particularly terrible was the brioche and croissants.
This iced latte cost 6 dollars and is probably one of the worst ones I ve ever had in ottawa. The espresso is comparable to instant coffee in flavour. Absolutely do not come here for coffee
Chocolate Crowassant: shape perfect, taste maybe its Old Almond Crowassant: shape not the best, bought as friends recomendation, taste below average Food
Good baked goods, coffee is meh and the atmosphere ok. Not overly friendly
Purchased 2 pastries today. $5.50 each. Got home anxious to try & they were STALE. First & Last time shopping there!! Food : 1/5
The place had a great vibe, and I enjoyed everything I ordered. The experience was good overall, but I wish they offered a milk substitute for those who cannot have dairy.
Three stars, average. Except for the service, fast and attentive. At the busy covered market...
We had a breakfast of almond croissant and croissant + fruit juice and chocolate. Quality without more. Promotes an old Obama visit. Still worth visiting for a coffee.
Nice restaurant, Parisian atmosphere
Price is okay Quality is good And most of all It s FRESH and you get a good option to choose so choose wisely cause there s always something you love there.
Stumbled upon this spot wondering through the Byward Market and it did not disappoint. Purchased a fresh load a bread that made my avocado toast next level, fruit Danish (yet to enjoyed but I m sure just as delish) and two cookies (only one pictured because I ate the empire one too quickly lol). Now, I m not saying I m a cookie connoisseur but I dot eat my fair share and these are top tier! A solid 9.75. The atmosphere and staff where lovely and I truly appreciate not being expected to tip.. an odd comment but this place has signs indicating they don t take tips and in a day and age where everywhere you go (even Starbucks) is spinning a machine around after merely taken your order and asking for 20% it was refreshing. I would have left a tip if I could have but took to Google to leave a review noting the experience I had. I will return to Ottawa for no other reason than the out of this world cookie.
We didnt try anything as we were stuffed to the brim already, but I wanted to see the Ombama Cookies. Staff were friendly and happy for us to take photos and browse all the yummy looking baked good and eatery items. I will go there today while still visiting. Cheers, SpicyJan
Incredibly good each time I visit here over the last 20 years.. Ask for the Daily meal special: delicious & excellent price!! Authentic typical French cuisine. Food
Delicious cookies highly recommended. In the old city of Ottawa . you can visit them after shopping in the cf center . there are paid parking spaces Food
2 stars for the over priced extremely hard double chocolate chip cookie.
We really loved this place. They have a variety of sweets, French breads and sandwiches. Everything we bought was fresh and well made. Perfect amount of sugar and cream. We went two times: first time was at noon and It was too crowded, second time was around closing time in the evening and it was less crowded. They could improve their service on busy times.
Very good fresh baked goods, service and coffee were about average for a cafe, seating area is clean, but dated, and doesnt reflect the quality of the food produced.
Awful! I ordered a tiramisu and it s awful! It s made of cheap cream, no coffee flavour, no mascarpone Just a reminder: mascarpone and coffee are the basic ingredients of a tiramisu!
Tried the bakery and loved it. Delicious food, huge selection of fresh baked items and was nice to sit on the patio. Highly recommend!
Very gourmet showcase. Lots of choice.
Must-do place for satiating your sweet tooth. Not a place for us though, as they dont have anything eggless.. Someone at the reception acknowledged that...
Not bad, wouldnt sell me a cake box though!
Must stop here for a snack :) Located in the heart of Bayward market. Everyone will find something they can enjoy here. If you are in Ottawa you need to stop here. Food : 5/5
Very large bakery various products
Very disappointing. First, the chicken pot pie was mushy, the sauce inside was really too thick and the taste left something to be desired. The Turkey Sandwich was ok. A lady in front of me had her Greek salad refunded because she said it was limp and soggy. For service, the gentleman told me they didnt have chicken pot pie. He didnt really know what he was selling. I saw my grilled sandwich on the counter and asked if it was ready after a good 5 minutes of waiting for the cashier to take other peoples orders. I dont know how long I would have waited if I hadnt asked... Truly Overrated as a place.
Do not come .. please x 100 times
Authentic frech bakery, fair price for the good food, they don t mess around, danish tastes great, raspberry cheecake tastes great.
Unfortunately, the price does not reflect the quality of the products
This shop is located in Byward Market, and theres a sign right at the cashier that reads: No Tips Accepted! After living in Canada for so long, Ive really grown tired of the tipping culture, so encountering such a generous establishment is truly rare. What makes this place special is that former US President Obama once visited here personally. I bought some maple leaf-shaped cookies with Canada written on them, which later became known as Obama Cookies . Apart from the iconic Obama Cookies, they offer various cute-shaped cookies. I visited during the Canadian Tulip Festival in Ottawa, and they even had tulip-shaped cookies. My friend chose a ladybug-shaped cookie, which was adorable! Each bite reflects the purity of the ingredients, with no added artificial flavors. It feels like theyre made with premium butter, very wholesome. Id recommend going on weekdays because it gets pretty crowded on weekends, which can be a bit overwhelming . Very lively
There is nothing French about this place! The croissants are cakey and the coffee is Nespresso! It s a tourist trap. There are so many better coffee places in this neighborhood!
We really entered through the movement of people. The pastry was dry or old and could only rescue the flavor of the espresso coffee. I wouldnt go back.
Tasty quality dessert. The chocolate cheese cake was really good. Kids liked the elaborately decorated sugar cookies. Adequate seating area. Staff can use an extra smile but overall good placed for satisfying a sweet tooth.
Excellent place for lunch
No organization in place
Just ordered a sausage roll to eat-in. Asked the girl if its cooked, she said yes, but shell microwave it to warm it up. Guess what...its RAW! Just uncooked dough over a precooked sausage. Where do they hire these people when they dont even know their own products?? Wont be back, ever.
Seeing Le Moulin de Provence is like seeing the Market Byward as its location blends in with this mythical place!
Excellent staff, my friend Juan Carlos, Venezuelan countryman, good place and food
The richest breakfast I have had in Canada, all fresh and excellent presentation. I loved the attention, we were served by Juan Carlos, a Venezuelan with a lot of charisma and a big smile. Thank you very much, I will definitely return to this place. The richest breakfast I have had in Canada, all fresh and excellent presentation. It still has a section that sell Obama cookie. I love their breads and croissants. Dietary restrictions: Has gluten free section.
Came for the famous cookies and they were not very good and quite expensive. Service was good and fast though!
This bakery has a generous amount of options to choose from, both in terms of savory and sweet foods. The selection starts with drier pastries like brioches, croissants, and cookies of different varieties to slices of cakes (cheesecakes, charlottes, an assortment of mille feuilles tiramisu to name a few) of all sorts. The thing the bakery is best known for is its artistic cookies, and I can confirm they had loads. If you crave something savory they offer mini pizzas, salads, soups, and pastas. The place is large so you will most likely find somewhere to sit without issues, and they have wifi. My only negative feedback would be regarding the lack of dietary options. If you have an allergy (gluten, dairy, peanut) or are vegan there are frankly very few alternatives. Kid-friendliness: Loads of fun designs that would appeal to children, paired with a pleasant atmosphere Wheelchair accessibility: Its on the ground floor so no ramp is needed. The place is very spacious, so there shouldnt be issues when it comes to moving around
Meh, the baked goods are mid, and there are so many dogs in the restaurant. This isn t a pet store, its a cafe. There shouldnt be that many dogs inside. Anyone who is allergic to pet dander shouldnt go here. UPDATE: I got back from Ottawa and tried the Obama cookie. Its not good, its just a gimmick. Dont waste your money on this place.
lovely french cafe, really enjoyed the pastrys
Nice spot for a coffee & a good pastry
Best Almond Croissant Ive ever had the privilege to eat.
Very pleasant place. A lot of people is proof of popularity.
This place is famous for its different kind of patisseries, sandwiches, loafs, cookies and other baked goods. They also have put macaroons on menu. Lots of space for dine in and enjoy happiness with your friends and family. If you asked take out they will nicely decorate your box, I have attached the photo for your reference. Also they add different patisseries in time and festivities. All the items are very delicious and rich in quality. Also they fo not accept the tip from the customers. Opera, mousses and tiramisu is so creamy and mouth watering.
Food is okay, but $6.99 (+ tax + tips) for a simple white baguette is simply a literal insult.
Found a disgusting long black hair baked into the spinach quiche .. after I had already eaten half . I got my money back but I m still suffering the psychological trauma.
This shop, famous for its Obama Cookie, gained its reputation when the current Canadian Prime Minister, Mr. Trudeau s good friend, former U.S. President, Mr. Obama, bought cookies here. In addition to cookies, they offer deli sandwiches, Danish pastries, and various baked goods. Located within the ByWard Market, I was entering from the back of the shop, but you might not miss the large photos displayed prominently from the visit of the Obama couple when entering from the front. You might wonder, what exactly is an Obama Cookie? Its just an ordinary icing cookie that you can buy in Canada, but its value skyrocketed just because Mr. Obama purchased it! Quite impressive, isnt it? You can also purchase a single cookie in a boxed souvenir. Many people were buying sandwiches and enjoying them on the patio or benches outside. Personally, it looked like the regular bread delicious. Why not visit as part of the buzz and see for yourself? Parking: There are no parking spots for ByWard Marcket but there are plenty of parking garage near by.
Easily, the worst Apple Strudel I ve ever had.
We come by whenever we are in town - always come back for their creme brulee.
Meh, savoury food is overpriced and portions arent great. Though there are 3 different styles of pizza (small round, larger round and 1/4s) its heated in a microwave. Very disappointing for a storied Ottawa establishment. The pastries looked good, though we never tried them. Doubt well visit again.
We ordered the black forest cake for my birthday. It s the worst cake I ever had. How can a reputable bakery make such a low quality, tasteless, hard cake? It doesn t even look like a black forest cake. I read a similar review to mine about the same cake.. very disappointing and we should be able to get a refund cause it will not be eaten.
The chocolate aclaire is sooooo good But the croissants are not pretty good Food
Central, excellent service, very friendly staff, everything very tasty and at affordable prices 100% recommended.
This isn t bad but the Mille-feuille was stale so I exchanged it but they dind t give me my money back. But the people were very nice.
Show up at 6:50pm after looking online saying closes at 7pm! Get in and 95% of the food is put away apparently they start putting stuff away at 6:30pm yet they close at 7pm .and we got cookies only thing remaining and payed 36$ for 8 of them and all of them stale and dry like they was old they should be ashamed
I visited a bakery based on a recommendation from the hostel staff to try their Obama cookies. However, upon arrival, the staff suggested I try their Danish pastry instead. I decided to give it a shot, and overall, it was a decent choice.
The quality has been reduced and prices have skyrocketed. The almond croissant is now thinner, lacks flavour and freshness. I paid 5 dollars for it. I am not coming back until I hear you are back to pre inflation quality and pricing.
Pastries were delicious. Staff caring and helpful.
Nice breakfast and pastry place.
Very pleasant place for an excellent choice of desserts.
I went to pick up a Christmas log today after pre-ordering and paying for it last Wednesday. The service from the people at the checkout was excellent. The log was a huge disappointment and in no way was it worth the $40 paid. It was quite small and there was almost no buttercream on it or in it and the worst thing was that the cake was very dry. Unfortunately, I dont recommend it. too bad for Christmas.
Nice family time.
Nice place with lots of choice and adequate service.
Fantastic pastries!
Great place
Hehe Very cute
Terribly disappointed in the service this afternoon, from what looked like a manager of all people. Asked for some sliced bread, as he was putting it in the bag, the last couple of slices fell on the FLOOR, he proceeded to attempt to hide with his back and put the pieces back in the bag. One of the assistants confirmed the order to which I responded, looks like some pieces fell to the floor (assistant did not see this) and told me no, just on the counter and I said no; it hit the floor then was put on counter. So I will not be taking the sliced bread, just the baguette. The manager proceeded to shake his head in disapproval followed by grunting. Im sorry but bread that hits the floor in a high traffic area like that is NOT fit for human consumption and nor should I be made to pay for it. It is well within my right to refuse. All he had to do is say: some pieces fell off, do you still want this and I would have gladly taken it. Disappointing behavior from a manager, it is unsanitary! and scary to think if youre attempting to pull this off right in front of me.... what happens in the back??? Dont ruin your business by trying to short change people and being rude to customers who stand up for their rights.
This place has a European vibe I visited on Dec 31st, place was busy but the servers were super nice and tried their best to serve everyone Bought a loaf of bread, birthday cake , a flan and a coffe eclair The cake tasted like a Walmart cake very cheap and tasteless and they couldnt offer to write (happy birthday) or even a sticker to say it! They simply said we cant! Bread was ok and other desserts were stale The flan was dry and a bit hard For a tiny eclair, it was a bit expensive (6$) Again Everything was ok Nothing stands out to be visiting again
This morning I went to the Moulin de Province for the last time. Up until now it has been a regular go-to place for weekend breakfasts. The pastries are no longer what they used to be. They are soggy and extremely heavy. There is too much filling on the raspberry and blueberry pastries which make them much too sweet. Even the cafe au lait was not good. Hope things will improve in the future as there are other go-to places in the market that are very good.
Little snack....
I had the pleasure of visiting Le Moulin de Provence some time ago, and its undoubtedly a prominent spot in the Byward Market. We stumbled upon this gem for breakfast during a leisurely walk through the market. One of the first things that caught our eye was their tempting selection of cookies, pastries, and sandwiches. We decided to sample a bit of everything, and I must say, it was all quite decent. Even with the place bustling with customers, the service remained attentive and friendly. One standout feature was their unique selection of Obama cookies a nod to the former presidents visit to this bakery during his time in Canada. We couldnt resist trying these iconic treats. As for the coffee, it was alright, although not particularly memorable. All in all, Le Moulin de Provence is a must-visit spot in Ottawa, not only for its delicious offerings but also for the unique Obama cookie corner, which adds a touch of history to this place experience.
Perfect
I have been a loyal customer for many years and have always sung their praises as to how their cakes and pastries were so delicious! But I find that the quality and consistency of their products has taken a big drop this year. They also make mistakes on orders but refuse to even respond to complaints. Unfortunately I can no longer recommend this bakery to anyone.
Very tired looking place with a massive selection of stuff. It feels like a food factory, even though it was not busy when I visited. I tried a brie and tomato sandwich and it was a very sad looking, soggy sandwich that tasted okay at best.
I just did not like that there were a lot of wasps and bees around the food which was really disgusting. I waited and stood long line to get in there and eventually ended up buying nothing when I saw that.
Good service, nice smiles, good food, good location!
I find most of their pastries tasteless. Can be busy at times.
it s ok but quite expensive for what it is. pretty much overrated. I think the obama cookies idea is just silly.. cookies are also over cooked. 33$ for a meal made up of a sandwich, a tiny salad and a desert, no drink is way too expensive
Obama cookies were OK. The rest of the pastries pretty mind blowing. I could eat them all but I wasn t in Ottawa for the required time to do that.
I really like this place, but the croissant with cheese is the best!
Nice Restaurant. Carlos was very nice with us. He was super kind and we really enjoyed our breakfast here
Excellent place! Iconic! And Carlos at the bar, super friendly. First class attention!
We were looking for a little treat in Byward and walked in 10 minutes before closing. What was disappointing was that they were taking the items out of the showcase before closing time - really limiting the options. The workers seemed very uninterested about serving all the people lined up (and actively ignored us) Seemed that they did not care about the business at all, but rather closing the store. I had to ask if they were no longer serving since they just kept removing items to which they responded with a monotone what do you want? . Mind you there were another 7-8 people in like behind me. I can understand one worker having a bad day, but everyone? My recommendation is that if you don t want the business then close the doors and tell the customers you are closed. 1 star because the dessert was good, but terrible service.
The place is nice. The food and price is ok.
A perfect place for breakfast! They have countless pastries, delicious sandwiches and your traditional breakfast with eggs and bacon. Also a big variety of cakes and cookies, like the famous Obama cookie. They have indoor and patio seating.
Great experience! Best staff and food! You should always stop by.
French pastries, traditional biscuits with scones and other blueberry cakes. Everything is super good!
Worth a try if your in the market, plenty to chose from. I probably made a mistake and had the pizza which wasn t the best. There was plenty of other items which looked pretty good so I blame myself. Staff and layout of the cafe were good which is always a plus.
Love no tipping policy
door closed at 6:49pm on a Sunday with staff inside. guess they dont want my business. went across the street to Cafe India and got freshly made Naan in 5 minutes.
In general, there are not many places in Ottawa for a normal breakfast (more than just a lot of bread and not much filling). In this regard, this place is advantageous, but I was surprised that a large part of the tables and chairs were closed for visiting - about a third, so people had to stand with food over the heads of others. The pastries are tasty and varied
Hey moly! Cookies, scones, turnovers, eclairs, fancy pastries, squares, bread. Heaven for bread and pastry lovers. Unfortunately not a single gluten free option ($12 for a few macaroons is not reasonable).
A classic place in Ottawa. Their good quality pastries havent changed in years! I recommend the almond crossoint!!!
Obama cookies are excellent, finally a coffee worthy of its name
It opens at 7 a.m., but you can also use it as early as 6:40 a.m. There is a wide variety of bread, cake, and cookie menus, and there is a price list above. The staff are also friendly. Card payment possible. Obama cookies were as delicious as they said. Not only did it look pretty, but the cookie itself was delicious and the dessert had fresh fruit. This is a bakery that never fails no matter what you choose.
I am new to the city and celebrating a birthday so I was in the market for a good cheese cake. Le Moulin de Provence did not disappoint! I added a small tiramisu on the side and it was so light and wonderful.
Lively place, wonderful vibe, great service, welcoming and friendly staff, high prices! :) I love seeing everyone of staff smiling, though the place was super busy! Food
Great place
This Obama cookie killed the French vibe for me but I would say it offers a variety of baked goodies, deli and drinks. Prices are on the higher side. Their pizza is expensive but tastes good. There are not a lot of spaces of inside the store but I would say it s a good cafe for a grab and go adventure. Customer service was ok. They offer salad and sandwiches but I didn t find them impressive.
Really excellent desserts, also very tasty coffee. The Obama cookies corner is particular. Nice assortment of bread too.
Arrived for breakfast and had a wonderful omelette on a croissant, bacon, fruit, homemade potatoes a little tomato and lettuce and a cup of coffee for around 20$ Everything was so fresh and the man who served me was very nice. Nice soft music in the background and lots of windows for people watching :) Thanks for a great start to my day.
Good place but the prices are high for a simple Croissant which is not that fresh.
Its nice!
Definitely on the sweeter side of things, but the owner is very kind
2023: the meat pies they have here are unbelievable. Update 2020: So nice to see this place in the summer with its windows open. I just had the best chocolate cheesecakes. I was sad as they ran out of NY cheesecakes :( This place is the best spot to go if you are looking for cheesecakes, pastries, sandwiches, cookies, meals and a wide assortment of breads. The staff are very friendly and there are lots of seating.
Absolutely delighted with my experience at Le Moulin de Provence in Ottawa! The continental breakfast surpassed all expectations the eggs were flawlessly cooked, and the use of the highest quality ingredients truly stood out. The desserts, with their impeccable toppings, were a delightful finale. Eager to return and explore more of their enticing menu. A five-star gem!
I ordered a black forest cake for my son . I was so disappointed with the cake. I have never eaten such a horrible cake in my life. Clearly it was a brownie decorated with whipped cream. When my son cut the cake yesterday he said , why is it so hard ? It should be sponge cake but it was more a harder brownie. We tried in their byward market store, it tasted pretty good so we ordered as a Birthday cake for my son. If you see the photo they have on this site , my cake was nothing to do with that. Being a reputed boulagerie I am super disappointed with them, if they give a completly different thing. I can say that this was made by some intern, no not even intern but by someone who doesn t know how a cake is made. Horrible ! I will never go to them .
