Jax in Ottawa

Ive had breakfast in a lot of locations including fancy cruise ships and Quebec City. This is by far, the best.

This is definitely the best brunch spot in Ottawa, possibly in all of Canada. I had a lavender asparagus eggs benedict here like 6 years ago, and I m still thinking about it. I ve yet to have a bad (or even mediocre) meal here. I desperately wish they d take reservations though. It s small inside and popular so there is always a line out the door, and Ottawa winters are not very forgiving.

Cool brunch spot with unique menu and well done ingredients

Great brunch experience. A friend and I split a bison burger and fried chicken sandwich - both dishes were amazing and I would eat either of them again. The atmosphere is cute and cozy - it took us a little while to get seats but it felt worth the wait. Thanks Jax!

Worst snotty waitress we have ever had. She asked where we would like to sit, and we replied either inside or out it really does not matter, whatever is easier for you. She went to her colleague and said, I dont feel like serving these people, and walked off. we waited for another 15 minutes while others were seated and left. We will not be coming or trying Jax if I could give a negative star I would.

I have been coming for the past 2 years; this place offers a cozy breakfast /brunch experience bursting with homemade food. From fluffy pancakes to innovative avocado toast, each dish is crafted with care using locally sourced ingredients. Highly recommended.

Could have great food, service, and atmosphere, but we wouldnt know. Showed up at noon, meeting friends for brunch. After 1h and 20 minute wait (where we were starting to get worried about them closing before we got even got seated), during which they let in FOUR parties of 2 or 3 (we were only a party of 4 mind you) ahead of us, my partner and I left. Zero communication from the staff, not even to give an estimated wait time. I dont think you should be allowed to call yourself a first come, first served restaurant if smaller parties are continuously given priority (and yes, I understand filling tables whenever possible, but they knew we had been waiting +++ time and there was opportunity for tables to be pushed together to accomodate us). Will not be returning to find out if they warrant a higher review.

Came here w the fam wanted to treat the in laws. Expect very slow service but that s ok, we kind of expected that given the reviews. I ordered the Benn, thought I was getting eggs benny but ended up being two breakfast sandwiches. To be fair the sandwiches were perfectly fine but at the price tag I can just get a breakfast sandwhich anywhere for a lot cheaper. (Mind you the chef prepared the sandwhich extremely well so no knocks there). Maybe a menu shouldn t have the word benn idk that s my opinion. Other than that, most of the other plates were just way over salted so maybe ask hold the salt and do it yourself. The orange juice is Tropicana and the coffee is PC brand coffee. So you re paying $3/coffee I d rather not. Most breakfast places usually serve Pilot coffee and then I can understand the $3 tag but PC? Anyways, food was prepared fine, presentation was good. If I could I d suggest those blueberry pancakes as even though we didn t get it they looked amazing. Anyway happy Brunching, sorry for keeping it real :)

First time visiting. Cozy spot with great breakfast menu, so many great things to choose from. Great vibe. I love a good hot sauce with my eggs and their 2 in-house hot sauces were . I will be back.

The material was of poor quality, and it was evident that my fruit side had been prepared 1-2 days ago. Furthermore, there was a terrible smell of burnt oil everywhere, which necessitated us to wash all our clothes again.

Cute small breakfast joint with diner vibes. Staff were super nice and the food was so good. The home fries are incredible. Fluffy and crispy. The omelette delicious and smoked salmon so flavourful.

Visited Jax for a breakfast for two. Our choices where their classic benny and an omelette. While I liked their home fries (have to agree they are very good), the eggs benny didnt stand out to me and the side salad had a bit too much wilted lettuce for my taste. My partner enjoyed their omelette. Im glad I tried Jax (nothing ventured, nothing learned) but personally, the cost/taste value wasnt there for me.

Super down with this spot. Food is top notch - I dare you to find another place that offers this many bread options. The vibe is fun too - open kitchen with staff chatting about funny things, mute colours and a little bit of classic diner grit. Service is also spot on.

Cozy place

This was our second diner place on vacation, and it was pretty nice. It was a lot smaller than we expected and that ended up being a little frustrating because it was almost like my chair was being moved every time the couple next to me moved. The breakfast was a little slow to our table (our order was messed up but the guy was new so I wasn t mad about it at all.) I think overall it s a place you should visit if you have the chance but it s not a place for quieter meal. I d also say that after we got in it was quite busy and the wait for a table was pretty long because of how small it actually Is. I wouldn t even consider this place to be accessible for someone in a wheelchair because they d have to move all the tables just to get you in. Also, with it being Ottawa, you definitely have to be looking for street parking.

Dealt with a very rude staff member. First, no one greeted us for about 10 minutes. Finally we were sitting. She was picking up dishes from the table next to us. I let her know that we were ready to order. Hoping she would let our server know because we were waiting for some time. She said cant you see Im a little busy with attitude. Jax wasnt my first choice and I had put my name down at another brunch spot nearby. Luckily I got a call immediately after this encounter that my name had come up on the list. So we left. If anything she did us a favor because the restaurant nearby was amazing. Its too bad because I had been to Jax a few years back and had a good experience. It was a very different vibe this time around. I would recommend more staffing as I think she was overwhelmed by the busyness of it all. I would also suggest new chairs for the ones with leather (its peeling), more thorough clean of tables as ours was sticky and new cups as some looked dirty or chipped.

Restaurant is really small but super cozy. Make sure to arrive with time to make a line outside. Breakfast are super yummi and well presented

One of the most wonderful breakfasts I ve had in a long time. The real home fries and the homemade bread adds a whole new level to their breakfast. The only drawback for me personally, was the coffee. A little too thick and dark for my taste.

Best brunch in Ottawa!!!!

Had a great and filling breakfast here. Went on a Sunday morning and only had to wait 5 minutes, but shortly after arriving the line was 1+ hour long. Disappointing that they only had drip coffee. Their house made hot sauce is HOT.

Probably one of the best brunch spots in Ottawa. Creative menu without straying too far from what you would expect. Bread is done in house, all sauces taste as if they are made in house as well. Eggs are always served as ordered, and without any leftover oil from the pan/flattop. Its just food served better - and you can tell the folks in the back put care into each plate that goes out.

Very cozy but accommodated 4 of us on a Sunday morning. Adults had one of the specials which was steak on toast with a chimichurri sauce and poached egg. and our son had home fries. Got busy very quickly but we didn t feel rushed to leave.

Had a brunch meal with 4 co-workers, service was very good as was the food, will be going back. Very cosy and quaint little place, highly enjoyed it.

I recently had the banana bread French toast, and unfortunately, it was mediocre at best. The toast was dry and and underwhelming. While the service and atmosphere was decent, what made the experience unacceptable was the servers behaviour regarding the tip. They entered in a 35% tip in the card machine without giving me the option to adjust it. This lack of transparency and control over the tip was very disappointing.

Cutest spot for breakfast and brunch. Rotating menu, so I enjoy coming here for a surprise! Unique and flavourful dishes for brunch. Service is great, small inside but worth the wait.

We came early on the recommendation of a friend as there are only 7 tables. The owners are very friendly. I had the classic Benny and my partner had the pancakes special. He loved mine and I did too! I used to hate eggs Benny but their sauce is savoury and so well complimented with fresh herb and chili for heat! Would come again.

You dont feel the love.

I had a great breakfast here this morning and got the pancake special, which was blueberry lemon ricotta with berries and maple syrup. It was definitely on the sweet side but very delicious! I think next time Id ask for the maple syrup on the side. The pancakes are quite moist because of the ricotta, ie its not an airy fluffy pancake, not much lemon flavour but again it was still good! A little on the pricier side ($19) but they use good quality ingredients and the portion was large. For timing, I came early at 8:45 am and left at 9:30 am. It was not busy and very calm which I liked. Im sure it picks up after 10am though. Last thing, I hope you restock your decaf coffee soon :) Looking forward to trying out the lunch menu!

Went for brunch on a Tuesday, and the service was the best I have had in all of Canada! The food was solid, and it was overall a great experience.

Smaller selection of menu items than we might typically see for breakfast, HOWEVER, the food was so delicious (fresh and interesting) and visually appealing. We went on a weekday for brunch, so there was no line up. Its a smaller place, so we can imagine lineups occurring on weekends. We would definitely recommend and return.

Had the sourdough French toast with strawberries with a side bacon. It came highly recommended from my waitress Kayla. This was the best breakfast I have had in a long time. Great food and great service.

Really disappointed. We love Jax, their food is amazing. But, very unreliable. We showed up today 1:30pm and the staff said sorry, we can t serve you, we re closing early our dishwasher is broken there was a full house still inside (dishes to be washed) and only 2 tables available outside (lots of dishes to be washed) Very obvious to anyone whose worked in service this was a sh*t poor excuse that they were relying on nobody else showing up and decided to follow through on that. A couple sitting outside had not even eaten yet, we could have ordered and taken no longer than them. If your restaurant says closes at 2, but you want to be done your close at 2, change your hours online to 1pm. Unreliable and likely won t waste our time trying here if we re not eating before 1pm again. Perfect way to ensure when we do come back, tips reflect service and not the standard 20% because we understand the difficulties of working the industry.

Delicious!!!! Small restaurant so not many seats but gosh the food was fantastic, very high quality and large portion for the price. I hope to return.

Im genuinely disappointed because I enjoy supporting small businesses, but everytime I visit this place the service is below average, and the food is inconsistent. Its not worth the hassle, especially when staff have been overheard discussing customers. On top of that, theres no parking or wifi available which only adds to the disappointment.

Really liked my visit. Homemade kinchy and pork belly smoked in house. Love when everthing is made in house from scratch. Service was great too, plus very nice. If you need a critic, the patio tables arent great but still liked that for a little corner spot. Lol

This lively establishment is often teeming with patrons, which can occasionally result in a delay for seating. Yet, the culinary rewards far outweigh the wait. The servings here are voluminous and are brought swiftly to the table, while also managing to be wholesome and delectable. The personnel exemplify courtesy, extending an ambiance that enhances our dine-out experiences by making them all the more pleasant and comfortable.

I was left unimpressed with the breakfast recieved. The eggs were bland, the tofu was dry, they burnt the bread, the cheese was nowhere to be found, and that is separate from the fact that they delivered the wrong sides for the order. Definitely not a place woth recommending.

We love this place for breakfast/brunch. I always end up getting their spicy eggs which truly are unique and flavourful and its the one place where the spicy title is real - no hot sauce needed. Their sourdough bread is fantastic and their potatoes are perfectly seasoned and cooked. The inside is small and they dont take reservations, so I wouldnt come with a group bigger than 4 and come early or expect to wait in line!

It has 5-7 tables inside and a few more outside, so I would recommend coming a bit earlier than 10am to guarantee a spot.

Presentation is good, but the food s not actually edible.

Considering both price and taste, I think this is my favourite meal in Ottawa so far. I had the Fried Chicken sandwich, and it was large, delicious, and came with both a salad and fries. Plus, Guy Fieri was once here.

I have been coming to this place for years and it NEVER disappoints. The food is amazing. I would highly recommend getting one of the specials as they are both tasty and aesthetically pleasing ( often nice colorful edible flowers etc). The only thing I would say has a bit of room for improvement is the coffee. An espresso based coffee menu would just take this up a notch even more! Overall, the venue is nice, service very friendly, and food quality VERY HIGH.They make their own bread in house, home made jams, home made aiolis and source fresh local ingredient ( and yes you can taste a difference!). GO. you wont regret it.

Had the Classy Benny; egg was over cooked (no runny yoke), bread needed a steak knife to cut though and the potatoes were stale. Disappointing experience for a spot I had on my « to go » list for quite some time. Would not come back.

First time at this establishment. The place is very small so it has a cozy feel to it. They have a decent outdoor patio space as well. Menu isnt huge but there is variety and it all sounds great. I had one of their daily specials and it was some of the best pancakes Ive had. Restaurant and washrooms were both clean. Service was lacking a bit (server never checked on us) but the food was worth us wanting to make a return trip.

Wow! This place is great! The banana bread French toast was the creation I didn t know I needed in my breakfast. So delicious and the texture is a delight on its own. I also got the standard for my wife with diced potatoes, scrambled eggs, and bacon. The diced potatoes were so good! Bacon was cooked perfectly. Great all around.

We visited Jax for the first time for brunch and it will be our last visit. The brunch was average with not so tasty sausages and potatoes. Pancakes also looked undercooked. I m not sure if it s because it was weekend but the service was very poor, took forever to order food, after our food arrived we had to stand up and go ask for cutlery or we d eat cold food for waiting to be served. The space is very cozy and the tables are very snug which meant that when they sprayed to clean the tables beside us the spray (with whatever is inside) went all over the place. I d suggest spraying it onto the rag and then clean the table instead of spraying the table.

Unfortunately they have gone downhill over the years. The traditional breakfast used to come with your choice a side salad or fruit now you have to pay extra for it. Now usually this wouldnt bother me but prices have gone up as well due to inflation which is understandable but to pay for something more that used to come with it is bothersome. Theres better places out there with more reasonable prices.

Had a great experience at Jax on a Sunday morning. Welcoming place and lovely waiters. Waited approximately 30 minutes, which was really decent and worth it. The daily specials for brunch won t disappoint!

Really loved this breakfast restaurant! The staff was really nice and welcoming, it s a cozy place. The food was great also and the prices are pretty decent. There was a 30 min line up on a Sunday morning but the wait wasn t too bad. We were able to sit outside and enjoy the sun. They don t have any specialty coffees (no cappuccinos or lattes, only filtered coffee and tea. But I didn t mind since I mostly drink tea.

I had the special pulled pork Benny with a side of Mornay sauce. It was really good and the overall experience and atmosphere in the restaurant was also very good. The only thing I couldnt take was that the side of Mornay sauce was $6.50 for a tiny little ramekin that didnt even last for half of my potatoes. Unfortunately I wont be going back at that price. Too bad because it was delicious!

I went to JAX for brunch on a Saturday morning. We were lucky enough to get seated as soon as we arrived. However, if you show up at peak brunch times,you most likely will have to line up. I ordered pancake from the specials menu and they were excellent. The service was also great. My only very little piece of criticism is that my friend had a hard time understanding their menu .they should offer an explanation to people dinning in for the first time.

Such a cute and cozy bistro! Just a few seats inside (reduced due to covid), but the ambience is relaxing and comfy on a sunny day. Our server was very nice and attentive, and the food came at a reasonable time. Food-wise the dishes were pretty good. I tried the ricotta pancakes and breakfast poutine. I didn t like how the pancakes came pre drizzled with syrup, but I should have asked in advance. The poutine came warm, but it was still good.

Typically I dont write reviews, especially negative ones as they can really harm local business, but for this place I had to. I always hear really great things about this restaurant, so decided to try to order delivery. First of all, this restaurant never listens to added notes/instructions for the food, which can be detrimental if you have food allergies or restrictions. Their menu is over priced, and the food is ALWAYS (without fail) cold once it arrives... I live 10 mins away from he restaurant, so I have no idea how this always happens. To give more detail, I am a vegetarian and the first time I ordered from here I got the eggs Benedict, but I specifically wrote in the instructions to please remove the meat... low and behold there is still meat on my food. I decided that must have been a fluke and ordered from here again a few weeks later. Same deal, I wrote special instructions that were completely ignored. I decided to give this place one last try this morning, and my food was freezing, was spilt everywhere, and they forgot a part of my order. I understand a slip up here and there with delivery orders, however 3/3 times where my order was completely messed up? That is ridiculous. I dont know who this restaurant is paying to write positive reviews about them, but avoid this place unless you want overpriced cold food, that is most likely missing a part of the order, or has some special instruction ignored. For a local place, youd think theyd pay more attention to their customers and their needs... truly disappointed.

Good breakfast place. Service was nice. The patio outside is nice to sit in during the warm breezy weather. The egg Benedict was good. A safe menu with various breakfast and brunch items.

Had the bison burger, for me it was a little soggy but it was delivered which could have played a factor. The fries were cold but had potential to be better. The salad was good and the pickle was amazing. The peameal in my burger was very stringy. I would give this meal 3 stars but I m sure once I can dine in I m expecting a better experience.

Poor takeout experience this morning. Orded the scambled which is supposed to come with seasonal veggies and provolone and we got this... we also ordered 2 fruits and one was sent as a salad. Didnt notice until we opened it up at home. Not impressed.

Breakfast is delicious, healthy and filling. The only problem is make sure you reach early (before 8am or at 8am) if you like to have early breakfast, else you have to wait in queue for a longer time and that is also because people love their food.

To start off the fruits does not look fresh, we ordered classy Benny and double standard. The classy Benny is not something I would recommend the bread under was burnt on the outside and had no flavour. The double standard with a side of pork patty was one of the worse breakfast I ve tried in Ottawa, the pork patty tasted that it was frozen and had no flavour and were the scrambled eggs. Only good food items we order that was good was house fries, bread, and the ketchup other than that everything else was garbage, I would never recommend this place to anyone nor even try again. Ps the server was not present at all, was only at one table who were family to her and all she did was talk to them, took about 5 minutes to ask for orange juice because she was too busy talking to her family about her schedule like she s not at work and they re was only 3 table including us sitting inside and it took that long. My own opinion though.

So cute!! My salmon bagel sandwich was great! A little but too salty but i loved it anyway paired with their amazing potatoes and salad!

I was so excited to try this place & support a local business. Specially in these hard time, but it ended up being the worst service experience I ve ever had. The waitress (Marie) was so rude & mean to us. She gave us attitude the whole time as soon as we came in. We thought maybe she was having a bad day. It happens. But she was only like that with us. She was rolling her eyes when we asked her questions about the menu. That was our first time there & surely the last. She never came & asked if all was good, but she was checking the other tables. It was evident that we were being discriminated against. At the end, I told her that this was the worst experience I ve ever had in my life and she replied, Well then never come back again. To which I answered, Of course I ll never come back. And she finally said, I don t like serving people like you anyways (I m part of a visible minority). My friend & I couldn t believe what happened. I hope no one experiences what we went through & that s why I m writing this review. Be kind to one another.

Usually I do take out. Esspecially when they did the pumpkin pie. Was delicious! Sometimes really good but the other day was absolutely awful. Dirty mugs, hair in food, things floating in my drink. The sourdough was delicious but mislabeled what was in the food. Partner got sick after the food. It was the only time recently that it wasnt good. The waitress was very nice but didnt offer even the coffee off or anything afterwards (even though we could barely touch our food and didnt finish any drinks because of how gross it was) not impressed with the customer service.

Small and intimate. One of the premier brunch diners in the core of Ottawa. Local food made right. I have not tasted better mushrooms at brunch. If youre going to check out Jax I suggest going on a week day as you may wait over an hour on the weekend. Try the banana bread for brunch dessert.

Second time I go here and both times a note in the front for private event. They should really do a better job updating for these types of situations

Served by a soft spoken sweetheart, had mushroom toast with added pork belly. Fantastic portion size and absolutely delicious.

First time back in many years, and the brunches are still as delicious! Plan to arrive early, as there are always line ups on weekends. The pancakes were a tiny undercooked, but still amazing. We found that there was not enough space for safe distanciation between some of the tables for us to be fully confortable, but luckily we were in a corner and felt totally fine. If it wasn t for that, I d have given 5 stars. I totally recommend it!

Amazing food.

Absolutely love Jax. It is my go to for breakfast. I adore their menu, flavor combinations, and the local businesses they work with (Seed to Sausage). The staff are warm and will learn your order by heart if you are a regular. Cheers!
