180 Kent St, Ottawa, ON K1P 0B6, Canada
Good portion for a full size garden salad, but since it is full size it definitely needed a second cup/more salad dressing. Fresh and crunchy
I had the Buffalo chicken sandwich here and it was pretty good. The prices were reasonable, the staff were friendly, the bathroom was tidy. This is a pleasant place to grab some pub grub in Ottawa.
It was a terrible experience today at Royal oak Kent. As we are frm Kanata, we usually go to Kanata Royal Oak. As Canada day, we tried going to Kent/Slater location today. The server was not at all helping us. We asked the server to make the wings well done and the server said NO. We ordered 2lb of wings and asked half cajun & half lemon pepper and then she said NO. The wings were just above average & again, we got treated badly as the server was not patient enough to hear our order completed. It was a very bad experience and will not recommend this particular Royal Oak location. Will never visit again
Nice restaurant and conveniently located. The service was good and the atmosphere was also good. I must admit that I was a little disappointed with the butter chicken as it was a bit dry (not much butter sauce) and the bread was burnt. I definitely will not order that again if I happen to dine there again.
Great atmosphere, very clean and spacious restaurant, friendly staff and a live band. The Shepherd’s Pie is easily one of the best I’ve had at a restaurant.
Good food and great service, but this place sure can get busy during lunch! It's a good place to grab a bite, watch the game, or just catch up with friends. The staff are very friendly and helpful!
Live music on an awesome patio on a Thursday night. Who could ask for more! Well you get more the beer is cold the staff is friendly and the food was very well prepared and presented. Definitely recommend. I think the live music is only later in the week but even without out it the patio is great. Looks cozy inside too I will have to come back on a chilly night for that.
Food and service above average! I had salad with goat cheese, nuts, etc. was fresh and dressing was very good. Partner had three fish tacos and they were delicious. Carrot cake ended the meal and was ok. Great location, big patio, tv viewing from all angles.
One clearly overwhelmed waitress. She did her best but she was running ragged. Think about maybe having more than one staff on hand.
Nothing special. Service was slow, but pleasant, and it wasnt that busy so they must have been understaffed.
I like it
Drinks full of flies and bar staff unwilling to make it right. HAPPY PRIDE!
Great food, fantastic atmosphere, and Steller service given that the restaurant was crazy busy.
Perfect for ending and summing up a busy day
A GREAT DAY AND A PRETTY SERVER!!!
Not a bad spot for an after work drink.
Wings wasnt cook properly, we gave back half of the order (5 out of the chicken wings) they only offer to give one wing on return; we didnt want anything on return and we pay for the whole amount, it was offensive they offer so, when we were letting them know the wings were not ready to eat not asking for refund or more food for free
3 meals, chicken tenders, wings a burger, fries and poutine... all were all fantastic, would definitely recommend this place!
We managed to snag a table on the patio today; it s Canada Day, so wait times everywhere were horrendous. We were told right at introduction to our server that it would be an hour wait for food. We appreciated the transparency. My teens and I ordered beverages and had our order ready. We received our drinks right away and took in the surrounding scenery and Snow Birds show. Our server continually checked in, regardless of having/not having our food yet. 45 mins later, the food arrived hot, in abundance, and very tasteful. I love that this restaurant brews their own beer and ordered an NEIPA. We had the chicken BLT and poutine and have absolutely no regrets. The kitchen staff need a huge round of applause for today as it was slammed from the get-go. Well done! Will definitely visit your location when in town again (from New Brunswick!).
Pup food. Ordered fish and chips. The batter could have been more crispy but at least it was cooked through. A nice size of fish.
Classic pub food and drinks.
We just left. 25 minutes on the patio. 4 other occupied tables so it wasnt busy. Not one staff member approached our table after we were seated. We had lots of time to kill and we were looking forward to drinks and a nice meal. But 25 minutes without so much as a drink order was too much. We found what we were looking for at the Heart and Crown. We are out for our 15th anniversary.
Went there for a team lunch, and the food was disappointing. The steak I ordered was very dry, almost as if it had been precooked, which definitely did not meet the standard of Royal Oak. The service was okay.
I have been coming here for over a year. Before I move away I just wanted to let everyone know that no visit to Ottawa would be complete without visiting Stacie and Nick! These two spearhead an incredible team run by manager Melissa. Thank you all for taking care of me this year.
Great spot had a quick locally brewed draft while waiting on a to go order of fries, fries were great, beer was cold, staff was friendly & efficient!
I ordered two appetizers- a small Caesar Salad and a vegetarian nachos. I washed my meal down with a refreshing Coca-Cola Zero. Before I ate, I ordered one their tasty seasonal cocktails. Vegetarian options: You can order the vegetarian nachos - no additional meat or chicken.
I was in town for the Ottawa Marathon. We went to the Royal Oak on Kent St. Sunday after the race. The atmosphere was average. Our waitress was friendly and helpful. She took our order and our food was served quickly. The food was okay but lacked flavour. Two of us had the recommended Steak and Kidney pie p. We both found that it lacked flavour. As far as prices I find them to be a bit pricey but then again most of the restaurants in this area are. Definitely a disappointment.
I love this place! Great people, great drinks and extraordinary outside sitting in summers
Royal Oak is pretty standard but I definitely come regularly for half price wings and $5 pilsner. The wings are solid and the staff is always great
Witnessed both staff and management deal with an interesting customer situation.... beyond professional.
Normally, I give five star reviews. Small businesses deserve being highlighted, and I had been going to this pub for about seven years. What happened about 20 minutes ago is beyond me. This was the place Id go to with my spouse, the place Id go to with my mom for brunch, the place Id recommend. This was the place after a moving Remembrance Day Id go and have a drink to honour those not around with me anymore, those that I served with. No more. I had finished work early and thought Id have a pint. I was talking with a gentleman that happens to be an immigrant, and we got along so well that what was a quick pint turned into a few hours of amazing cross cultural talk. A pint an hour, maybe slightly more. As Im about to call it at the late hour of five pm, the gent offers me a pint of Guinness. They arent free, more so from an immigrant with limited means. I accepted. They took his money, and refused to serve me. I explained, they didnt seem interested. Taking his money (at least give him back his fare, good God!), I went to a local ATM to at least pay him back what he paid for, though he was hesitant to accept it. The money, I suspect, will be pocketed along with the unserved fare. I hope today was an unbelievably, outrageously unrepresentative experience. It pains me to say this. Though that kind of treatment is outrageous.
After a long dew days of meetings around the Hill, this was the perfect pub to kick back, enjoy the Wednesday Wing deal, and decompress. Great service and great selection. Cant wait to go back.
Chiken tenders. 3. Tiny. Dry. 12$ before taxes. Heavily encourage people to never order this off their menu. 100% not worth the money. Supremely disappointed Food : 1/5
We were a lunch party of 11. Our waitress was great, competent and efficient. The food arrived quickly and all together, so the service was great. I ordered fish and chips and found the fish to be dry. One of my colleagues commented that his fish was greasy. I found it interesting that another review said the same thing (greasy). I did not complain or mention my dissatisfaction to the staff. We picked this location over the Bank Street one based on a colleagues suggestion. I think next time we will try the other one.
Went to Royal Oak on Kent St. last night and it is deserving of a 1 star. The waitress/bartender was not pleasant at all. She was rude and seemed like she didnt want to be there at all.. To top it off, 1 chicken burger, 1 Shepards pie and 3 drinks cost $90... the food was decent but never again.
This place is a dumpster fire. If I described my experience no human being would ever come here again. Having staff force you to sign up for their onlyfans is crazy... but being accused of doing magic tricks with hostesses.... This place deserves to be closed. This is 48 hours after the incident 0 apologies. Absolutely gross place.
Always stop here for drinks, such a comfy ambiance. Also, great service. Keep up the good work!
Average pub, average deep fried fare. Could use more craft beers (1-2 arent enough!)
I ordered a Caesar Salad for takeout and came away with barely any lettuce. Very disappointed.
Wouldnt recommend drinking the water they serve here..
Service with a smile. Great spot with a view. The brie, cranberry, turkey sandwich was excellent.
Mediocre bar for a visitor. Many better alternatives no matter what you are expecting.
Horrible never come back here
Beer, fajita wrap with fries, and apple crisp to share costed $38. Not a bad deal for the beer quality, service and food. I liked the fries they weren t over cooked or under cooked, seemed fresh too. I took my servers recommendations and got the fajita wrap as she said it s tasty and doesn t get you too full especially when you re having a beer so that s what I did and I was satisfied with the portion!
Great service, cozy ambiance and they let our group stay for 4 hours without feeling rushed to leave. Unfortunately, their vegetarian options could be improved. For example, the butter chicken vegetarian option is just rice, vegetables and the sauce without the chicken being subbed for tofu or some other protein. Same thing for the asian noodle bowl which is just noodles, vegetables and sauce with no protein. I ended up going for the black bean burger. The patty was burnt and the burger lacked flavor. I will give points for having plant-based cheese available and well identifying on the menu the vegetarian and vegan options.
Smokehouse burger was great! Awesome service.
What a pleasant get to gather THR ROYAL OAK BAR Royal Oak ON.SLATER Amazing Staff very professional and did I forget their EXCELLENT SCRUMPTIOUS BAR FOOD ALWAYS FRESH FLAVOURFUL LOTS OF..A WHOLE OVERALL .UNBELIEVABLE LUXURIOUS SURROUNDINGS GREAT FIR ANY SPORT FAN WEDDINGS..JUST LOTS OF AWESOME.TIMES
Ordered wings and nachos - both were delicious. Our server was nice and easy to deal with.
There were only a few tables with people seated and yet, the staff completely abandoned us after we were seated! After about15 minutes and as the group of three wait staff and the manager (?) were passing our table and not acknowledging us at all, I quickly asked if we were going to be served at all?! Within two minutes they send someone! Hospitality is a tricky business! If people don t feel welcomed and acknowledge, it leaves a bad taste no matter how good the rest of the experience would be. We enjoyed our food and might go back in summer again. I ll update my review then.
Service was amazing and food was as expected for our entire party!
Good place for a team gathering. I enjoyed the hot shepherds pie. The service, however, was spotty. It took a long time for a waiter to come and offer us water or take our orders.
We walked in and the sign said seat yourself so we did. It took about 20 minutes before someone even said hello to us. The waitress seemed like she didn t really want to be helping us. We hardly saw her and it took a long time to get our bill. We were here for about an hour before we got served our food. But drinks came fast.
I remember when The Royal Oak decided the Canadian cannabis laws weren t strict enough for the (discriminatory) taste of their management. That sign didn t age well as it s no longer there, but discriminatory behaviour is not ideal when you hope to repeat business. There are plenty of awesome pubs options in downtown Ottawa! Not recommended.
I liked my experience there.
Lovely environment, beautiful patio and right downtown too. The food is delicious and staff very professional. Great place to host groups too.
Food is great and the prices average for downtown. Service is not too bad.
The in house chips were burnt! But the burger was fine!
Good atmosphere and convenient for those working in Centretown. Prices and food are comparable to other nearby pubs.
Stopped in for nachos and a pint last night with a friend and my wife. Bartender SAM was extremely rude, disrespectful, unprofessional, to the point she reach on our table and grab our plate and drink. Never seen anything like this in my life. Making accusations and she was proud that other customers were also angry with her behaviour. Just want to mention our waitress was friendly and courteous and she had no idea why Sam was acting in such a way.
Showed up after a show. Atmosphere wasnt great (no lighting). Had a great waitress, ate and paid the bill. I then witnessed another waitress being completely inappropriate and aggressive (which appeared to be for no reason). We had been sitting beside this table and they ended up getting kicked out. They did not appear drunk, just...happy? The waitress snatched the beer aggressively and actually almost seemed drunk herself. I felt bad for the table. It was uncalled for. Bad waitress who needs a permanent vacation.
The summer Caribbean Cob Salad was WAY TOO small for 18$.
Great
Nice place for a pint
Service was good even though they were busy. Had Fajita wrap and was disappointed. It is very small and the lettuce was wilted. Doesnt seem related to fajitas either. Would not recommend this menu option.
Closed for a private event. None of the staff members I tried to speak to seemed interested in responding to whether the space was open to the general public again or not at 11 pm.
Always good food
Service a tad slow, but thats OK. Atmosphere very basic. Food is quite good, drinks selection is very decent. Food : 5/5
Food was excellent, service is great, and nice wine list. Will definitely be back!
Do try and find the time to visit the Royal Oak if you are staying in Ottawa. If you are British like myself and like Friday fish and chips, order them here as they were great and are discounted on Friday! Went nicely with Canadian Blue Moon one of the beers.
Good and drinks were good. Service was a little slow. Highly recommend the Strawberry daiquiri! It was absolutely huge. Left was the alcohol free one. Right was the daiquiri.
Its an oak
Been coming here for 7 years and I always bring new people and buy several rounds. One day I brought a new guy and the server with a big beard points at my friend and says hes banned for drinking outside drinks. I explained hes never been there before to which he replied well it was some white bald guy with a goatee as if that was a justification instead of the most racist thing Ive ever been told. Got banned from an Irish bar for being Irish.
The service was great for our lunch group. I believe there was only one server working, but she did a great job making sure everything was taken care of. Our order didnt take long, and everything was prepared very well (shoutout to the BOH!). There is something for everyone on the menu, and they can accommodate/customise your offer. I definitely recommend this location for a nice relaxed/casual dining experience.
We stopped there for a beer. The bartender was pretty funny and she made the experience enjoyable
Nachos soggy and cold. Wings were just like Janes frozen out of a box. I expected better. Wont be back for apps. Drinks were good
Went there for lunch with my wife and always loved the shepherds pie price went up and quality went way down no flavor and barely any meat was highly un satisfied but service and ambience is as always enjoyable too bad love going there and waitress seemed uncaring when I told her about the food
Been to this location few times never going back, takes forever to get served after walking in, seems like bartenders and servers would rather socialize with each other then serve the customers. Theyre simply miserable to be around.
A good Oak :D Mel and Nick and Stacie are cool and great at their jobs.
Bus exhaust is a bit much.
Avoid this place at all costs. My recent visit to this restaurant left much to be desired. Despite a decent atmosphere, the lackluster service was evident. With a not busy restaurant, our small group of six faced disappointments like cold fries and a dried-out grilled salmon dish. The server disappeared after taking our orders, leaving us without a chance to provide feedback or order more than the one redeeming factor the non-house beer. The unprofessional server didnt address our concerns, pushing dessert sales while ignoring the unfinished meals on our table. Even when we requested more water, the service remained subpar, exemplified by a self-serve water pitcher. The staffs disregard for our comfort, from cold doors opening to rush reasons during winter, arranged the restaurants outdoor tables. Save yourself the trouble and steer clear of this poorly managed establishment.
Classic pub. Good food. Good service. Time to get festive.
Service was exceptional, food was mediocre but on the pricey side. Everything was cooked very well, just not as flavourful or higher quality as I expected.
Meh
I love the atmosphere, the food, the staff and the pricing. Amid the chaos, there is a place of peace. Harrison is doing a great job to keep it that way!
THE KINDEST, MOST COMPASSIONATE, FUN PEOPLE... Back & Front! An Honour and Utmost Respect For This slice of Canadian Delight! Absolutely is a MUST visit, enjoy and live.... THE ROYAL OAK! Kent and Slater
We visited the Kent & Slater location on May 9th. 3 out of 10 rating Positives : Waitress was very nice and attentive. Good Location Good Seating Negatives Beer : No British beer on tap. Kind of hard to believe that at an British pub that there was no English, Scottish or Irish beer on tap. It was all the standard stuff you could get at a place like Boston Pizza. Food : We were a party of 6. No one really liked the food and found the meals average or below. My meal the Windsor Sandwich lacked any real taste and was on a crusty bun that was so tough I honestly was hurting my teeth on, one of those bite and pull rolls. My wife ordered the fish and chips, greasy fish and limp fries .. says it all.
Large outdoor space but buildings block the sun after 5 pm. It gets cool by late summer. Nice drinks selection and food.
Its just a bar, they sometimes dont even have pub food. You also have to order your drinks at the bar because servers are not as attentive
Try the London Dip. Amazing.
Friendly, efficient service and great food. Our server managed our (admittedly disorganized) table of 9 like a pro and made sure we were taken care of despite the patio being pretty busy. This is the best Royal Oak Ive been to (out of 4 or 5). Try the fish and chips! Wheelchair accessibility: The main entrance (off Kent) has no steps or incline and the door is wide enough to accommodate a standard wheelchair. Once inside, there are no steps or inclines to inhibit access to their substantial outdoor patio.
I like their fish and chips
The food is horrible, the service is poor, the beer selection is OK. Nice patio. Overall terrible.
Thank you to both locations for the fantastic service, excellent food and great atmosphere. Our group was so impressed on Friday night that we decided to try out the beautiful patio at the other location on Sunday. We were all thoroughly pleased both nights. Shout outs to our servers Yanny Friday night and Kenzie on Sunday. Royal Oak we think you are great. Thanks for the making both trips a great visit! Highly recommend.
Disappointed with dinner after a long drive. The French onion soup was bland, onions were not cooked through and pretty huge. Steak and mushroom pie was decent, but not worth the $20. We ordered Moscow mules that were flat. The best meal was had by my son... he had the butter chicken . We wont be back, but maybe the other pub food is better.
Went there for a drink and ended up ordering food and stuff as well. I was honestly expecting a very average pub food and service but omg!!!! The noodles I got were sooooo good! The service that Thomas and Harrison provided for the table were super! Will be back millions of times! This business really should put value (I m sure they are doing it already) into these people!
Excellent food, reasnable price, friendly staff
Was there Friday night, had the beef pie and veggies. Portions were so small and the beef pie was so salty. Do not recommend
The breaded wings had hardly any sauce on them making the taste very blandy. I tried the honey garlic and the cajun dusted ones. Great service but would never order wings there again.
Really need an update of menu and decor
Good food, great staff, cold beer.
Well maintained restaurant for the age. And is kept clean everytime im there!
It was delicious, great, so good. I love the onion soup at this place and the nachos and the fish and chips and the amazing service. A big THANK YOU to the whole team!!!!
Service was ok, staff wasnt too nice and slow. Food was ok
Great place to meet for lunch. Excellent food and service.
Great french onion soup and flatbread!
Yummy food. Good service, but a bit over priced.
Great place !
Big patio. Service is consistent and the food is easily the best of the downtown Royal Oaks.
Great customer service. All the staff are friendly and good food
Great staff and amazing patio combine to make this a highly popular Centretown pub. This is a fixture in the neighbourhood of the parliamentary precinct, which is saying something since there are a growing number of good pubs downtown even now after the pandemic. Outstanding service. Most recently Melissa really went the extra mile (km) to give us outstanding service.
Great Service and the Salad Bowl for lunch was delicious!!
A nice place to chill
Awesome staff amazing patio delicious food and amazing drinks i love this place
Great chicken pot pie! Great service and I would highly recommend this place to eat.
good pub fare, great service
Hands down, this is the best Royal Oak in the city. A hidden gem with a large patio that you can almost always find a shady seat on and terrific food and service. Last Saturday night, my friend and I were there having a difficult conversation, and the staff was so respectful and intuitive. They let us be at a time when every restaurant only cares about turning tables over. That s the kind of stuff people will remember for life, and return again and again with 10 thirsty friends.
My wife and I went out for our first patio since 2019 and it was fantastic. Food was delicious, and beer was flowing. But what made our visit the best was our waitress, Stacey. She was phenomenal!! Unfortunately, we couldnt tell her manager, so I hope they see this. Well be back soon!
Bad food, bad coffee. I got dried bread dipped in maple syrup for french toast. Not worth the price. Not going there again.
Service was top notch, food was delicious, and the shaded patio was perfect on a hot & sunny Saturday afternoon!
Great food and friendly service.
Thanks!
The staff are excellent, the food is good. I pretty much lived here when I lived in Ottawa, now I visit every time Im in town.
Great service Mel is friendly and fast and would definitely return for this location and service again.
Really good bar fun atmosphere. THE ONLY PROBLEM WITH THIS PLACE IS THEY PLAY MUSIC AND ONE OF THE YOUNG WAITERS WHISTLES LOUDER THAN THE MUSIC. I EVEN REQUESTED THAT HE NOT WHISTLE BECAUSE IT BOTHERED ME AND HE STILL FELT THE NEED TO WHISTLE. REALY NOT IMPRESSED!!!!!
Love this place, one of our favourites. I hadnt had the Shephards pie before so tried it tonight and it was really good. Service is always great.
Not actually open until midnight. We arrived around 11pm and were told to go to the other location.
Service was adequate for a large group, the food came out quite slowly for a lunch period. The food was just alright, after I asked them to surprise me.
The oak burger was not the greatest
Less busy than the one on Bank usually so you can be in and out quicker
Amazing place get Thomas as a server!
Thomas is the greatest server! Thanks for the awesome experience and good times!
Thomas was the best server I ve ever had! Hes so nice and he knows the menu so well!!! I m so thankful he was my server! Looking to coming back soon! Hes attententive!
Great open patio, the service is very good, and in todays circumstances, I feel they adhere to safety protocols that provide a safe environment. Cheers!
I was so nervous to go to a patio! These guys are so respectful and courteous I was at ease immediately. All the rules are being followed including distancing and masks. Theyve always deserved an A+++! What an enjoyable evening thanks guys!
Hands down the most responsible establishment when it comes to COVID safety. Tables are at least 6 feet apart - unlike so many other patios - and are thoroughly cleaned, the servers actually wear their masks consistently, and it is the only place I have been to that follow contact tracing protocol. Yours is the only patio on which I have felt safe during reopening. Oh and the food and drinks are great. Keep up the great work!!
Awesome Smokehouse Burger
Food was very tasty. The steak n mushroom pie was delicious! Main meal, plus a pint, plus dessert, tea, then tax n tip all totaled to $50 for one person. A bit steep in cost for me, but otherwise good food, and good service too.
Service started out strong but after awhile it was pretty much non-existent. Patio is great though.
Very good services and fast
Well spaced out patio to meet Covid-19 distancing measures. Wait staff was incredible and very attentive.
Great patio, safety procedures are firmly in place and the staff is friendly.
Best patio ever
Food is typical Royal Oak, nothing special. The patio is quite nice and large.
Prime rib burger is so good
Sat out on the patio to eat, food and service was good. While outside there isnt much view because youre surrounded by tall buildings.
We had a large group and as it was cool outside, we decided to eat inside. There were arrows on the floor for direction of flow and social distancing and the servers wore masks. We felt comfortable eating indoors as we had plenty of space around us and the menus were disposable. The food was great! The sweet potato fries were crispy with a nice spiciness. The fish and chips meal was a very large piece of fish with generous amount of fries. The service was prompt and courteous. Everyone was satisfied with their meal.
Good Food Waitresss Awesome supplies all extra things we needed!
Hard to see it virtually abandoned in light of Covid. I feel for the owners. The service was top notch.
