cannot answer simple inquiries. emailed asking about the bottomless cocktails twice and was not given an answer. This anytime bottomless cocktails seems like a scam.

Great place for Caribbean food and drinks

Went with a large group for a social event. Was encouraged to try the mac and cheese with oxtail. What a disappointment. Small bowl of mac and cheese with small pieces of oxtail meat (maybe). Im jamaican, and last i ate oxtail, it was off the bone. This oxtail looked like it was stripped off the bone and sprinkled on top of the mac and cheese. Surprisingly, the meal was good but not worth the price, let alone the mandatory gratuity added to the bill for being part of the group. And the drinks were watered down. On a positive note, the atmosphere was really nice, as was the live dj. The servers were polite, as were the bartenders. I would love to go back there, but for the subpar food and watered-down drinks, it isnt worth it.

Had some tasty sharing style plates. Really recommend the Oxtail, Jerk Calamari, rice & peas, and plantain. Nathan our server was great. Will be back!

My friend took me there on Friday, November 8, 2024, just so we could catch up before the winter starts. I was very disappointed with the food and the service. The Jerk calamari was very salt, the plantain chips were burnt and too salty the rice and peas was oily tasting. Everything had too much salt and they do not have vegetables and did not offer any solutions. We ask for vegetable and they said they dont carry it. I was really hoping to like this place and give a 5 star but I cannot. Perhaps if they were willing to rectify the complain I would have give them a better star for trying. I would not recommend this place. Vegetarian options: No vegetarian options

Such a nice spot to connect with friends. Our group had an amazing time. Great music, service, food and overall vibe. A necessary spot for Ottawa nightlife. Would highly recommend. Vegetarian options: Pasta was amazing and such a great vegetarian option.

Good food however there was 18% gratuity on my bill for a party of two people? I found this highly unusual and concerning. Food took a while to come out as well.

Unfortunately i have to put it as 1 star. We were a group of 10, service was horrible. We waited 2 hours for our food, advise our server many times and 3 of our group members didnt receive their food at all. Once we mentioned it to the server he said oh well make it to go? Well guess what, we never received anything. We asked for our bills so many times, we were done. They arrived with the machine, not providing any bills or details so we didnt have any information on what we were paying for. Atmosphere would be perfect, if it wouldnt be of the shitty service.

We went out to eat as a group of 10 for my birthday, sadly only half of us received our food. Understandable for the food to take time when it is a rush hour but we ordered as soon as we got there and there was only another table that was sitting. Half the group finished their food while the other half had to remind the server they were waiting for their grilled cheese. They offered the grilled cheese to go and a free Mac and cheese after a 2.5 hour wait but we still did not receive the food and decided to leave. The menus would need some work as there is no description on what is in the drink or what is in the food? We also only receive a tapas menu and not the full menu displayed on the website. We also had to remind the server to bring us the bill to pay so that we can leave and get food! They came with the debit machine but no receipts we all had no idea what we were paying for. Sadly I really wanted to like this place and wanted some good vibes for my 30th birthday! The drinks were good and for some of us who did receive their mac n cheese with jerk chicken that was also good but portion size was small for dinner.

10/10 FOOD WAS GOOD BARTENDER WAS SUPER GREAT. You can tell they put love and care into the food and presentation. Should definitely try it out. Would definitely recommend the jerk wings, mac and cheese with Jerk Chicken, the margaritas.

It is sometimes a good dance bar among many on Clarence Street, if dancing is your intention but not sure about the food or service. On my first and second visits there were no cover charge and drinks were at reasonable price. The patrons mostly from Caribbean regions and so was the music and some women are very cute with artistic bodies. The dance stage is the right size and people are friendly and fun. I dont know about quality of food and service, but my drink was served quick enough. On my third visit last night there was a $20 cover charge, and the place was crowded, and everyone was from Caribbean regions, but the issue was that over 90% were guys. Not my favorite place at all when such a great majority is of male gender, so after paying the heavy cover charge, I got out within 15 minutes without buying any drinks. So this bar is too highly volatile.

Best spot for date or to hangout with friends. Very cozy and really great choice of music. If you looking for some Caribbean vibe this is the spot. Food and cocktails always good. After party always dope !!!!!!!! My go to spot in Ottawa

Arrived at the restaurant for the time I booked the reservation, they seated us and then after 30 minutes of no service, I approach the server to order food, and he tells me that the kitchen is closed and he didnt know. If thats the case, why make us wait 30 minutes, possibly even longer if I didnt go up myself to ask. I then ask when the kitchen usually closes because I made a reservation for 8:30pm, and the server and another coworker proceeds to tell me, that they dont know, they just close it whenever they feel like it??? Why even allow me to book a reservation online, get seated with the menus, wait for 30 minutes if the kitchen is going to be closed? Very disappointing

Had a 630 reservation to celebrate my mom s birthday. She was visiting from Toronto and I was very excited to take her here and celebrate. However, when we arrived the restaurant was not set up, despite the fact that it open at 5pm. They were setting up the patio, cleaning tables, and there seemed to be no staff. Also, the menu was not what was expected based on what is online. A waitress came to ask if we wanted a drink and we proceeded to order. 15-20minutes later we still did not get our drinks, there was no one behind the bar or in the restaurant as staff were walking around. We asked another staff member to check on status of our drinks, but nobody came back and told us anything. Because the experience was so unprofessional, inattentive, and unorganized we left without receiving anything. This was especially disappointing because as I said we were celebrating my mother s birthday.

Visitied this place today, the wait was long to get our food. Portion size is for toddlers. Ordered jerk wings but there was no jerk and dry. The begetable pasta was good but the sizing was not for a grown adult. Shrimp mac and cheese was 5/10 But the oil was oiling. We also got the shrimp tacos and the 3/10 also loaded with oil not enough seasoning. The aesthetics were nice

Tropikal Ottawa location - It took a while to have someone come and take our order. The drinks came out 20+ min late. (The restaurant was not busy at all). The food was served an hour late. The jerk fish was tasteless, I would not recommend it to anyone. The Jamaican Patty was deep fried which made the patty horrible. I would not recommend ordering that either. The oxtail tacos tasted like they were loaded with cinnamon. The waitress was nice, the music was good. Overall, the dining experience was not pleasant.

It was my first dining at Tropikal , the waitress was very lovely and explained what was available and what wasn t . I ordered jerk chicken n fries , which to be honest the friends wre burnt and soggy ,the cocktail was pretty good . Sadly there was an incident that happened just next to the patio ( gun shot and I witnessed a man fighting another n holding a gun ) in panic we all ran inside . It seems to be the norm and no one cared to check if we were okay but they wer so quick to give us a bill . Bear in mind ths is after we ran and left the food on our table . I seem to have spilled juice on my food and was made to pay for or or wait for another one to be made ! At this point we wer pretty much shaken and we wanted to go home . Service was terrible !im certainly never returning

The food is not worth the horrible service or long wait times. We had very high expectations as the restaurant looked so nice. The server only took half the tables order and left. Then came back 3 times to retake the same peoples order because it got mixed up . The chef was pumping food out which was not being picked up by staff. We saw food sitting there for 20+ minutes. We asked for to go containers because the wait was so long and our Rasta pasta $28.00 was put in. 3 x3 container with 1 piece of chicken. In what world is a Caribbean spot selling jerk for $28 and giving 1 piece of chicken? Disgrace. Will not return. Change of management is needed.

Dont waste your time or money on this place. Terrible service just absolutely terrible not sure how they survive downtown. I went with a group on Friday evening wasnt busy and still couldnt get our orders right couldnt get our orders even to the table. The portion sizes are very small especially the Rasta pasta. HOW ARE YOU A CARRIBEAN RESTAURANT WITH NO BEER. They had one beer option and it was a bad one. Servers claimed there was issues in the kitchen but there was ZERO sense of urgency all the employees was calm conversating amongst each other and a table of 10 has nothing but water for an hour. Then one thing of fries came then another hour wait for the next person to get something. Creative menu but honestly just poorly done. No rice and pease?!? Man oh man going downtown Ottawa you expect because of the competition they try hard but this has to be the worst spot. Once again liquor menu is full of $20 cocktails but only one beer Ive never been to a restaurant downtown anywhere that didnt sell beer or at least show it on the menu.

Food is average at best , went with a friend who has been there before , portions a lot smaller and flavours are just ok I have had a lot of island/ Caribbean food and what we had is not worth the price we paid . Maybe they got a new chef or cutting back on portions. Overall nothing exciting.

Went there with friends. Ordered appetizers which were good. Calamari and cheese dip. Entrees we ordered Roti platter more bone than meat, oxtail shepherds pie (tiny portion) and 2 blackened cod dinners (tiny soggy portions). Cocktails were good. The PRICE WAS RIDICULOUSLY EXPENSIVE for our portion!! 3 drinks, roti platter, 1 tiny cod and calamari was $265.00!!! Super disappointed we will not be back.

We had to remind our server of our order and Im guessing the kitchen staff only started working on our food then. other tables who came after us where served, dined and left - we were still waiting for our food! All show, no substance. One of the most overhyped restaurants in Ottawa. We had to wait 50 minutes to get two mains. There were three tables around us who came 15-30 mins after us and they all received their food well in time but not us. We had to remind the server four times to check on our food. Even the food that came in was burnt. At any other place we would ve sent it back and would ve asked them to redo it. But having received our food nearly an hour late we were starving and we didn t bother. Had we asked them to replace it, they would ve taken one more hour. Any other self-respecting restaurant would ve had a manager come and talk to address the delay but nobody really bothered. Just terrible.

Tropikal restaurant offers an experience to its customers. The atmosphere and presentation of the meals are well delivered. The meal that is well seasoned is quite expensive for the portion and quality. Also, the description on the cocktail menu is vague, so its hard to get an idea of the taste. The service was good.

First time here the food was great. The restaurant was quite empty, which was understandable for a Wednesday night in the Market with snow in the forecast. Our server Oresta was knowledgeable and communicative and made some great suggestions. The menu has a lot of options. And we decided to share the roti platter and some appetizers. Our calamari was generously seized and started off like crisp. But got pretty soggy before we were finished the dish. We had coconut shrimp, which was quite small for twenty two dollars , but had excellent flavor. It was served with a delicious sauce for the crusty bread to sop up. The roti platter for sharing was excellent. It had a wonderful exotic flavour profile of curries and spices, and was also generously sized. I loved the oxtail tacos, served on soft tortillas with an au just that was tasty but unnecessary, as the tacos themselves were juicy and very flavourful. The only gripe of the evening was the speed of service. The kitchen was so slow in getting even our starters out that we asked ro check on our order a couple times. Im a patient diner, but the establishment doesnt do itself any favors when the food takes so long you start to wonder about leaving and trying somewhere else. The good was very good once it arrived but could i say it was worth the wait? If it had come out in less than an hour, I would have said yes. Hopefully we came on an off night, because the food was very good. I just dont think I could stand the wait again!

It was my first and last time going to this place. So rude

I cohost a local food blog and decided to bring colleagues here after reading some excellent reviews. I was disappointed---the service was extremely poor and the meal was subpar. We waited 1.5 hours before food arrived and our medium rare lamb was served cold, tough and overcooked and very under-seasoned. The rice and peas were crunchy and inedible, we figured we received the burnt bits from the bottom of the pot. When we reached out to the staff, both the waiter and manager did essentially nothing to rectify the situation beyond removing the lamb we could not eat from our bill. The manager was especially dismissive and unaccommodating. 2 of us left hungry after eating no main meal, yet the waiter forced our group of 5 to pay an 18% per person large group gratuity. I will certainly never return and I will advise my followers and friends to take their business elsewhere.

We had a reservation for 15, I had the goat curry, for starters they said they did not have platain; food was cold, cocktail Hendrix more ice than an actual drink, vibe and music was good. I will said a disappointment for me as i actually was looking forward to this as per the reviews amount us more share my views of the food nothing really special. Side platain where served and yess they where good.

This is my second experience - I ll start with positive in saying the ambience has a huge improvement but the food is worse. My Cabrit was sitting in a pool of oil. I had to ask to be served after 25 minutes of being sat with only 4 other tables in the restaurant. NO BEER IN BOTTLES??? and the drafts are unknown brands I so wish I didn t see the kitchen - no one had gloves or a hair net And one persons hair was long and loose I sat watching the cook leaning over the swinging doors watching people and head straight back to the stove There was a group of 3 non kitchen or serving staff that just kept going back into this little kitchen with their street clothes on and no PPE What is going on with health and safety ?

Very much overrated. I have been there on 3 occasions and have been disappointed with the food every single time. The food is far from flavourful and way too pricey for what it is. The drinks are expensive, lots of ice and just regular tbh. 2/3 times I was there the service was very slow!

Ottawa has a GEM on their hands! The restaurant is spacious, decorated with an island vibe, and had R&B music playing. The hostess and bartenders were friendly. The food... I had the oxtail tacos and omg... these were Birria style and came with a jerk or oxtail jus to dip them in *chefs kiss* Hubby had the oxtail mac and cheese and devoured it so fast I was unable to grab a pic... hes sorry... If we were from Ottawa, this would be our spot. Would love to pop this place into Toronto. Run, dont walk, folks!

My fiancée and I love this place. We always sit at the bar and start with one of their amazing cocktails. My favourite is the Unicorn. Warren is a mixologist extraordinaire! My absolute fav dish is the Oxtail Tacos followed by the Jerk Chicken. And if you re still hungry try the innovative Oxtail Shepherd s pie. The vibe is cool with hip hop, R&B or reggae most the time. If you like island food it s a must try!!!

Great experience at Tropikal! From the wonderful service from Lamiae to the mouth watering food. The oxtail tacos were the best tacos I ve ever had!! The bartender Warren is awesome. The cocktails are delicious - I had the Hendrix Lamar and the Tropikal sour. Both were flavorful and well balanced! Will definitely be back!

This place is extremely over priced, and you get the worst service in return. Our server name was Candice (black / blond shaved hair) was just one of the worst servers I ve ever seen. Very unfriendly and extremely rude. Took our drinks before we were done with them, barely came to see what we needed, we had to call others to get her to our table to pay. And might I add the place was empty. Terrible terrible service. I had a guest with me from Switzerland visiting, and I was beyond ashamed this is the venue I selected due to the terrible and rude service we got from Candice that he had to witness. I will never go back and highly discourage anyone from going there.

Ill start with the good: amazing Carribean food and great atmosphere. I highly recommend the mac and cheese with jerk chicken. My 1 star review is really because the service I got was terrible, it started off okay but as it got busier we got completely ignored. It took 45min to get our desert which was inedible from the overwhelming amount of Rhum (?).It seemed like they only had one waitress for the whole place but some communication regarding that could have gone a long way. Im puzzled because this place came highly recommended (and rightfully so for the food) and my partner had a better experience when she came with her friends in September.

Went here Thursday night closer to 10 pm. It was busy. We sat at the bar, and their kitchen was closed, but the bartender asked on our behalf and they made an exception. We were so glad they did even though we would have been okay without it. The appetizers we got were the Calamari and Cheese Dip and both were delicious. The drinks were also dangerously good, specifically the pineapple with coconut milk!

My wife and I had a date night last night (not as frequent as wed like with 3 young kids), and we chose Tropikal! And let me tell you that WOW, WOW, WOW!!! The food is absolutely terrific. The Oxtail and/or jerk chicken mac n cheese is as good as youll find! We had the Peppa Lobster and Shrimp for a main, as it was absolutely Devine! Bring your appetite. Its a lot of food, but so worth it. I absolutely recommend Tropikal to anybody who loves great food and ambiance!

Arrived for 7:30 reservations early. Got seated with my friends. I got my first drink at 9:00 pm, while my friends are already getting their second drink. Followed by my appetizer and meal by 9:15. Food was okay. Nothing outstanding. The service was terrible. The worst part is the waitress giving us the machine to pay our bills without giving us our bills first. The machine asked for a tip again. As a party of more than 10 people, the tip is already included. Very rude of the waitress to not show us our bills first resulting in almost everyone paying double tips that start at 18% that night Oct 1st.

Great food (Mamas mac and cheese was incredible) and the service was amazing. The vibe seemed more bar than restaurant which was a bit of a surprise for us.

The service was slow, when it was not busy. We had to wave to have someone talk to us . The calamari was blend, no salt and chewy. The Rasta pasta was dry. Overwall, it was a disgusting experience. I do not recommend this place to anyone. Such a waste of time and money.

Food was delicious!!! I loved the akee & saltfish fritters and the Ital bowl! Great service by Candace, staff and management were super friendly. Shoutout to Mess who freelanced as photographer. Plus there were b-day treats Vegetarian options: Loved it and am told more are coming.

The staff were super welcoming and attentive, the food was phenomenal, and the drinks delicious. All of this and the prices are very fair. My friends and I have found our new fave spot downtown!

I had my birthday party here last night & I am still smiling from the service I received. I had a party of 25 which grew by 2 additional parties. The staff had no issues making moves to accommodate my guests. Our server was Candace & hands down she held my party down all on her own! I cannot believe how she was able to manage everything. I got picky friends and she didnt even sweat the demands made. She made my night so special, I had no worries at all about my guests. She deserves a raise!!!! The food was great, the atmosphere was dope, music/vibes were all amazing! All my guests want to return again we all had such an amazing time. The restaurant turning into a dance party afterward was the cherry on top! The DJ was on point with the tracks! Hands down this was the best birthday I ever had and it is all thanks to Candace and Tropikal staff! Ill be returning again, cause I need to try everything on their menu, drinks and food!! Thank you thank you all for everything, I am so grateful from the bottom of my heart <3 xxxx

Our server Candice was absolutely excellent. We had a large group of people for my Wife s birthday party and Candice handled the whole group by herself with great professionalism I m talking close to 30 people. I recommend that Candice receive some kind of raise of commendation for her excellent service. We had the perfect night all thanks to Candice. Parking: There is a above ground parking garage right across the street from the restaurant. You can park on the street but spots may be difficult to find, especially if you have multiple guest so the parking garage is you best bet.

Jerk chicken was incredible, Pilly Pilsner is now one of my favourites and Candice & Matt were welcoming and ensured I enjoyed my experience at Tropikal.

Johnny is my favourite bartender. Always brings the best experience. Had the passion fruit marg it was so delishhh!!! Will always be back!

Candice is a prime server. The food is divine. But her service just made my experience all the better. She had amazing suggestions and really read the room and even joined in on me and my friends giggles while we were here. Besides Candice being amazing. The cook was just phenomenal. HIGHLY recommend.

I went to celebrate my birthday and our experience was amazing. We were late for our reservation and despite their late policy they were gracious enough to accommodate us and we were seated 5 minutes later. The food and the service was a strong 10/10. All staff from the hosts to the bussers were very welcoming and courteous, special shoutout to Candice our server who was very kind and attentive throughout the night. After we paid and were about to leave I mentioned in passing that we were celebrating my birthday and she went out of her way to bring me a complimentary birthday shot before we left! Super thoughtful and much appreciated :) def will be returning.

I hate to say this but the black waiter attitudes shaved bald head was very rude, & I won t be coming back because of her, very Disappointing experience

The food was decent. The oxtail for sharing was filling for two. Oxtail was flavourful, with a home-made appeal. There was old school hip hop playing in the background at the time with a laid back vibe. The service was welcoming and pleasant. You pay a little more for the whole experience but overall the place is worth the visit.

Warren was a great server. He is respectful, and attentive.

A fancy Jamaican restaurant turn club in the evening. The food is quite good, the portions, however are a bit small.

First impressions, the aesthetics were nice. The food was below mid, we got cabrit and it was burnt. The jerk Mac n cheese and plantain was really good. Got passion fruit margs, they tasted strong but no flavour. Music was a vibe. Service is really where it started to go down hill. The bartender was nice but knew nothing about the menu even though he s supposed to take food orders. Our server barely served us, we had to ask the hostess or other server for any requests or info and waited 15 min for our bill. Not likely to recommend to anyone unless they want to grab drinks and listen to good music.

It was my first time going with a friend and I really enjoyed the Rasta pasta oxtail, jerk chicken wings, plantains and more. However, Candace was absolutely horrible she had an unpleasant attitude and quite frankly I am not sure how she gets away with it. Employers should really look into the servers behaviour as it greatly contributes to the overall experience. Nonetheless, at least the hostesses were amazing and the food was good.

Service was very slow, the steak I ordered medium rare was well done and the sweet potato puree was ice cold. All the server responded was I took the order didnt cook it. If your going to pay $ 55. For a meal it better be worth it and this was not worth it.
