Definitely a hidden gem!! We were walking around trying to find a spot for lunch and tada. We had the Chorizo arepa and pica pollo Latin bowl. Yum

This place is awful. The customer service is horrible and they will forget to add the toppings you want on your sandwich and then charge you for the items even though they were not added. If you order a large coffee/latte make sure they fill the paper cup up all the way as they will only give you half. This is completely unfair, if you pay for a large you should receive a large. The workers are rude and unprofessional and need to be reprimanded for their rude behaviours. I definitely do NOT recommend. Not worth the money. Do better!

The Arepa was delicious, a little messy from the dripping goodness, but its part of the experience. The venue was busy so eating in was a little tight.

As per their newspaper interview Owner is reliant on Public Service workers to keep their business afloat instead of creating a business locals would want to support. 3 out of 5 arent actually happy to be back, Sir.

I had the Morning Pabellon because I was looking for a breakfast item late in the day. Eggs were good but the avocado was soooo under ripe that it was inedible. So unfortunately I had to take them out as they were rock hard which makes up a significant portion of the arepas so definitely took away from the sandwich. Overall, the flavour was fine but the feta overpowers with not much to balance it out. Nonetheless the price is right so Ill give Gooneys another chance at some point but definitely try something else and hope for better!

I ordered two arepa sandwiches. The Cadillac arepa s bread was too dry and too hard to chew. The bacon filling was also very dry and very salty. The other papillon arepa is very nice compared to the other one.

This is for too many a hidden gem - perfect lunch time (or breakfast) meal. The arepas are delicious, plenty of choices on the menu, and theyre even gluten-free! Highly recommended for a quick, tasty bite to eat when downtown.

This is a great place for a quick bite! Despite how busy it can get, the line moves so quickly. The staff were friendly and efficient. They provided recommendations. I had the Sweet Isabella and it was a good sized serving. The house coriander sauce is absolutely delicious! I wish there was more on the sandwich, or that I had thought to ask for more! Great spot DT. Sandwiches are perfect, coffee is fresh, bold and pure. No outdoor seating but indoor space is clean and manicured.

I ate a turkey sandwich here for dinner. I was in town staying at the Marriot and I wanted something healthier than a burger. So this place was recommended and it was perfect walking distance. The bread is more like a chibatta bun. I would definitely eat here again.

A new favourite lunch spot downtown. The arepas are excellent, crumbly but stable enough to eat, and made with maize so gluten free. The bowls are massive. Good coffee and some nice soups. The prices are great for the area, you get a lot of food for your money compared to other places. Here you can find hearty cornbread sandwiches. The coffee is good, but you should have a good appetite for the meal.

I just went to gooneys for lunch - got a Cuban sandwich with three different sauces and the sandwich could not be more dry. I asked the server if she remembered the sauces when ordering and she said yes. Let me know if this looks like theres any sauce. The meat and pork was also incredibly dry. Not worth going back. Second time Ive had dry sandwiches here. Super disappointed as this place came highly rated and I thought Id give it another try.

Its a modern-looking place at the corner of Kent and Albert in downtown Ottawa that apparently just moved from a smaller space down on Laurier, and it has a loyal lunch clientele. I joined the line one Thursday afternoon and it was pretty full with people both dining in and taking out. They serve a selection of arepas, as well as sandwiches and bowls. An arepa is basically a South American sandwich. To quote wikipedia, arepa is a type of food made of ground maize dough stuffed with a filling, eaten in northern parts of South America since pre-Columbian times, and notable primarily in the cuisine of Colombia and Venezuela, but also present in Bolivia, Ecuador, Nicaragua, and Panama. While it was a busy place, they run an efficient operation that puts the sandwich artists at Subway to shame and I quickly had my sammy in hand, paid, and found a table. After careful pre-scouting of the menu, as I usually do, I landed on the sweet Isabella which said menu describes as as arepas with Roasted Pork, Coleslaw, Cheddar Cheese & our house coriander sauce. I also got a side Caesar salad, as I wasnt sure the arepas was enough to satisfy my hunger. To dispense first with the salad. The dividing line between a good Caesar and a mediocre Caesar often comes down to the dressing. This dressing was creamy and garlicky. It was a good Caesar. Now, the arepas. The pork was plentiful, not dry, and had tasty char. The sauce was good, and not all the arepas had slaw but this one did and I choose it because I wanted that second note to complement the meat. It did and it was good. My only note would be the cheese shread. It would have really elevated the sandwich were it melted. Overall, a good lunch, will be back.

Gooney s was the first restaurant I had ever walked into when I moved to Canada 10 years ago and I was living in centretown. Now it s the best part of my in-office days! So happy this business is still here and thriving. Delicious arepas!

Some of my friends suggested that I pass by! And it was delicious! I took the famous Arepas (several choices but I took the Pabellon) and I absolutely loved the dough! Crisp, soft and cooked beautifully. They seasoned evenly the beef and I just love how they take care of the meal. The service was good! Nice and cooperative! If you are looking for a place in Downtown Ottawa to eat, pass by here and you will not be disappointed!

Very flavourful, huge serving size (I easily stretched it into 2 meals), and they didnt skimp on any of the toppings. $15 seems a very good deal for a meal this high quality in downtown Ottawa. Im from out of town and stumbled upon this place. Seeing arepas sign in window i couldnt resist! So glad i did. Very clean, friendly service. The best arepa I ever had. I got the Llanera. Despite it being 9:30am and listed under lunch (they also have breakfast ones), they made it no problem. So flavorful and very generous portion. The whole menu looked delicious. Cant wait to try again when Im in town!

I got a takeout lunch this week: An arepas sandwich w/ shredded beef. (Arepas are made of cornmeal and very popular in Colombia etc.) Hands down the quality is on point. In all honesty, this is one of the absolute best sandwiches Ive ever had .... It is very filling, the flavors are natural & cheese & sauce completes it When I ordered, I saw a sign to make a combo, so I asked for it....but I could only have a very tiny side soup & no drink My total cost of these 2 items was $19.26 ....Maybe thats what lunch costs downtown these days I dunno. I get that commercial rent is expensive & these guys have just moved to this new location etc. But Instead of eating lunch here weekly, it might be a once a month or ever couple months exception simply due to the cost. I was annoyed that my lunch combo didnt come with a drink of some kind. Parking: The new location is on a busy corner in the financial district of downtown Ottawa. Lots of one way streets & public transit layups. It would be hard to find free street parking during business hours.

I live a few blocks away from Gooney s and it is one of my staples. Pabellon arepa for the win every time! The care put into the food is very clear and the service is always excellent. Fresh, tasty, and worth every penny

I love this place so much. I used to eat regularily at their old location in 2019, and was glad to see recently they survived Covid and have a nice new location in a more visible corner. The best arepas ever, I would eat lunch every day here if I could.

This was one of those places you just go to give it a try and ends up being a great find. I went at noontime, the line was long but I was out in 10 minutes, they are super efficient. The food was delicious, tried the House Bowl and the Arepa with chicken, both tasty. The place is big enough, with a nice modern but minimalist atmosphere. I am craving for another arepa right now, you should try them!

I don t work downtown , when I m down there on business I always try to pick up an arepas sooo good. However there is no parking near Gooneys usually I park illegally ( yes that s how good the arepas are) run in and run out. The other day there was a city of Ottawa parking vehicle on Laurier so I thought I d call ahead arrange to run in just as they were done making the sandwich and run back out , maybe a minute tops. When the woman answered the phone and I explained what was happening a car came up behind me and wanted me to move , flashing his lights , he even got out of his car , this all happened at the same time as I was trying to place my order the guy was inching towards me in his car now, the Gooneys woman said I would have to wait 10 minutes for the sandwich, every time I ve been there ( even busy times it takes 3 minutes to make the sandwich, so why 10 ? Because I m illegally parked and just because your in your car you can still get ticketed . I swore ( at the guy who was attempting to nudge me ) she was still on the phone and heard it . I hung up waited for a few minutes and thought maybe theyyyr really busy when I looked in the restaurant it was pretty much empty. I saw someone on the phone and tried to get her attention , she came to my car ( which was nice ) but what happened after wasn t . She said i refuse to serve you because you swore at me , I tried to explain what happened but she said I don t see a guy , of course you don t because he basically damaged my car ( slightly ) and took off. So trying to get a sandwich I m basically assaulted by this dude whose having a really bad day , and then abused by the staff at Gooneys . I think I even said I m sorry if you think that was for you but it wasn t . Why not believe someone who is literally apologizing for something that they didn t do to you ? Then REFUSE to serve me gee I hope this woman never is in this situation herself , it s sometimes nasty out there ( the mean streets of Ottawa) it must be nice to sit in judgement of others and be so rude. Unfortunately they make the best arepas in town , ( the only arepas ) but it s so hard to get to by car and this staff was completely unsympathetic or maybe just mean ? Idk , but it will be a long time before I ever go back there. I ll miss it but I have my pride . Sorry Gooneys you really are the best ! I have been enjoying Gooney s sandwiches for about 3 years now, but unfortunately it seems the quality has dissipated as of late. I would always order a vegetarian sandwich and vegetarian arepa and in my last order a few days ago, the sandwich was smaller, with much less toppings than there used to be. It used to be packed with lots of veggies, cheese, and sauce and simply taste very delicious, but now it was just ok, average at best, which is a shame. The vegetarian arepa that I ordered used to have more inside as well and this time didn t have any avocado, just cheese and beans. For the prices, what I got in my last order doesn t make it worth it. I really hope this was a one-off instead of a lasting change to the quality of their sandwiches to save costs. I see this time and time again with places like this, so I will probably give them one last chance in a month or two, but with so many places to choose from, the sandwiches will need to be perfection, as they were, to keep my business.

Tried the Chorizo Arepa today and it was delicious. Great option for someone who is gluten free. I was nervous about the coriander sauce because I do not like Cilantro/coriander in my food so I ordered it on the side to try and it was insanely delicious, I understand why it s famous now because it made me like coriander! I tried this place for the first time today and I will most certainly be back. High quality products and its all fresh. Straight up unreal sandwiches! Great bread and great toppings selection make a great sandwich :) Friendly sevice too, its a good place to spend your money as I felt great value for the price and service. Gooneys... thank you!

BEST LUNCH SPOT IN DOWNTOWN OTTAWA! I went to Gooneys for lunch today with having read the review online. And, this place did not disappoint. I even started staring at other peoples sandwiches - the roast beef sandwich looked good. I had the Pabellon apeas with added avocado for an extra cost. The coriander sauce was delicious! I liked the feta flavour, the beef was flavourful and the Plantain added an interesting sweetness. I expected the meal to be small but it was filling. The cost was average $15- but honestly you get what you pay for, quality! in comparison to an unhealthy sandwich at subway which is $15 anyways. Gooneys should be your go to instead! Cheers!

I ordered Gooney s on UberEats. The Pabellon arepa sandwich was good. They also have a chip and drink combo. At the time when I ordered it was $4.50 to add a combo. But now they overcharge so I m unlikely to order again. They want $7.49 to add a small bag of chips and a can of Gingerale on top of the $16 sandwich. Why the 50% increase in a few weeks, I ll never know.

Happened upon this place at lunchtime as it s around the corner from my lawyer s office. I was pleasantly surprised. Loved the arepa I ordered (morning pabellon) and definitely will return.
