Always great food, and fast friendly service. Never disappointed!

We had the set menu, which tasted lovely, but there wasnt a lot there. It cost £17.30 a head, which is reasonable in todays market, and they are obviously cutting back because times are tough. Not quiet as good as it used to be, but I think its a sign of the times, sadly. Staff were pleasant, and everything was clean.

Fabulous Chinese eatery. £17.50 each for a MASSIVE starter plate, huge portion of crispy duck and 3 main courses with egg-fried rice. Superb service, quick and attentive service. Thoroughly recommended.

Really good food. The place is lovely and although a bit old school, which is part of the charm An unique and pleasant experience. The set menu is very well done. A good pre-theatre place. Allow an hour and a half to eat without rushing it.

Went here last night for a meal with my Fiancée, whilst the food was superb and some of the staff were lovely, we couldnt help but to feel rushed like they were trying to get us out of the door as fast as humanly possibly. We didnt even get to look at the menu before being asked if we want Starters/Mains by a Rude elderly waitress, we had told them we wanted to order the mains later, halfway through our starters we were constantly asked what we wanted for the mains before we even finished the Starters. Again, the food was delicious,Hot and perfectly cooked. We did have some issues as we did not receive a Starter we ordered, staff was understanding and quickly took it off our bill. As someone with a disability and not able to make quick decisions, I found this atmosphere extremely hectic and not that friendly because of the one waitress which was assigned to our table at the start. We will be coming back but possibly not to eat in but to take-away instead. Thank you to the other lovely waitresses and great job to the Chefs! Great value for money but Patience is key for making this restaurants atmosphere: Friendly!

We loved this quirky little restaurant! Situated across from hotel, we thought wed try here. The staff managed to fit us in without a booking and the food and service was excellent. We would like to thank everyone that added to our excellent experience. 5 stars from us

We have visited the grain barge since the late 80 s, but every last visit recently is just so awful- the food is okay and just okay not at all like it used to be- but the service from the older lady who I think is the manager is just beyond rude??? The rest of the staff are absolutely lovely - yet obviously a little afraid of her , no flexibility at all with the set menu, one staff member offered to swap a dish, but it was soon squashed and refused by the afore mentioned manager- we won t be returning, definitely not about the customer for her!

1st visit and what a wonderful experience! Food was so tasty and more importantly HOT! We had the set menu which was amazing value. First class service from our friendly and knowledgeable waitress. Food was served promptly without feeling rushed. The ambience was so soothing. Soft lighting and tables far enough apart to be able to speak without being overheard, which is a massive problem in many restaurants. It was lovely to see the owner, not just overseeing service, but also serving himself. If you love authentic Chinese this is a must to visit. This will definitely be our go to for great Chinese.. Bill for two with set menu and 2 Chinese beers just £42. Recommended dishes; prawn toast which contain whole prawns! Duck and pancakes and really tasty ribs.

We used to come here all the time (9-10 years ago [before kids]) and it was great. I am pleased to say it still is. Super fast service, great food, all good. It can be a bit chilly in winter. They do have heaters and stuff, but obviously its an old barge so not very insulated. What Im saying is, dont go in January in a t-shirt. Food

What a fab place! Why buy takeaway/delivered takeaway, when - if you get off your ar*e - you can go and have a Set Menu for around £15>£16 each and have a really good meal & plenty to enjoy. No need to add a Side Dish, just not necessary. Pleasant, English speaking staff and a down-to-earth atmosphere. Plenty of L/A parking (£2.80 after 5 PM) - 100 mtrs from the Grain Barge. Will deffo be back

The barge setting off this restaurant should be its selling point but all the character has been sucked out of it by fitting UPVC windows that belong in new build houses all the way around. Its sacrilege.

Scruffy. Poorly fitted out, floating grain barge. Better to go over the River to Charters also a 100 year old grain barge huge bar and Thai Restaurant.

A lovely Chinese restaurant in a barge moored on the river Nene in the centre of Peterborough. The food is acceptable. The manager told us that getting fresh ingredients is challenging since some Chinese ingredients have to be delivered from London. We mentioned the crispy duck were too dry due to being overcooked, she apologise and offered us some free desserts. Very friendly and well run restaurant.

If I could give a zero I would. Had the worst food and the attitude of the manager was rude to say the least. I complained about the under cooked chicken and the server was apolgetic, I asked that I not be charged for the chicken in black bean sauce as it was chunks of chicken that had been flash cooked andthe sauce added some of it was pink bordering raw. The server said shed spoken to her manager and the whole meal would be free, I offered to pay for the rest of it, but she said not to worry. That was the end of the matter and I wouldnt be writing this review if then the manager hadnt come up and gestured for us to get up and leave saying up, up. Talk about poor customer service, the guy clearly has no idea what that even means.

Chinese restaurant on barge, what a great idea. Given that it was on water, we had little or no insects in the restaurant. The service was very good and the food was exceptional good. You can taste the spices in the food. The coke drinks was unfortunately flat for some reason. That is the minor negative.

A group of 6 of us had booked for last night and were fully accommodated. Stupidly on my part I had not said I was on crutches, so as no tables upstairs was a bit of a laugh getting downstairs. Staff were very pleasant, laughed with is and helped with anything we needed. The price for the set meal, we all felt, was amazing and drinks were not overpriced. Definitely looking forward to another visit.

I had a delicious meal in The Grain Barge. It seemed that people who booked in advance were up on deck level and those who turned up on the off chance of finding a space or those with small children were below deck. This may not be the case, but was how it seemed to me. I was below deck as had turned up to chance it. I didnt mind at all as the below deck area was well decorated, well lit and the food and service were good. I couldnt eat all that Id ordered and so took it home in a take away tub. If you want to be up on deck level to look out at the water, Id suggest phoning first to make sure you can have a deck level table.

Absolutely spot on, nice setting (if not a little rustic). Eight of us went for the set menu and we couldnt fault a dish. Crispy where it should be crispy, succulent where it should tender and fantastic value at 16.50 a head.

Genuinely excellent food and a very unique setting

I wish I could give no stars. We booked a table hear a few weeks ago for 21:00. We walked in and we got asked a few times if we booked a table because it was a late but we got there for before our 21:00 booking. One member of staff looked at her watch. We got seated on a four person table at the side and we wanted to be by the window. We asked if we could please move. There was only one other table of people in there. There was an empty four seat next to the window. The member of staff we asked laughed and said that tables for four people, there s only two of you and we said we re on a four seater now and we pointed out there was a whole area at the other end. They explained they have closed that area now and went to ask someone else if we could move (I m guessing higher up) a lady came over and asked why we wanted to move and we said we wanted to see out of the window. She laughed and said it s dark you can t see anything. That tables for four people we sat there feeling really uncomfortable, not wanted there, the experience was just horrendous. I worked in restaurants previously and I would bend over backwards to make my customers happy, making reasonable adjustments to make their experience a special one. Moving us to the four people table would have meant just cleaning a bigger table when we were gone which when I worked in a restaurant I would have been more than happy to do. We were very polite and just got the sense they wanted to go home. We ended up going to East which was very busy, the vibe was great, the staff were lovely and attentive and sat us next to a window (on a four people table) and we had the best experience. After the experience I had at the barge I don t think I would even give it a second chance now.

Nice chinese restaurant on a barge. Set menus are good value for money and you can take anything you dont eat home. Only downside is the sweet and sour is spicy which was a shame as it looked delicious but was too spicy for me to eat, shouldve had a little chili icon next to it on the menu

Got us sat without an appointment. Food was good service was ace our server was most excellent and laughed with is. The only down side was the price of prosecco you need a 2nd mortgage everything was inline price wise apart from the prosecco. Over all though a very good night out with friends.

Weird that I was asked for my kids ages and was told that they don t do young children. Not sure what that mean but definitely doesn t sound like a place I want to come to any way.

Booked table today for 4 adults 2 children we told them one was 2 years old No high chairs stacked chairs together to accommodate As the little girl was excited she made some noise calling her uncle and ducks With that the owner said if we can t keep her quite we would have to leave How rude With that we left and will never go back Not child friendly at all and a horrible dated restaurant After reading reviews not the first time she s been rude to customers and children Avoid like the plague

Great food

You know how it is when youve worked hard all week, and you havent been out in a while, was really looking forward to a meal here. Eaten here many times previously. Opted for the set meal. The starters and duck course were good, however, the main course disappointing: Sweet & sour chicken - sauce a bit odd-tasting Beef something - not sure what this was, it wasnt black bean sauce, very soft, tasteless beef with a couple of mushrooms in a bland sauce Pork something - this was nice! We had a coffee after, in total the bill came to about £50. The bill was brought to us at the table and we were told to pay up front. Five minutes later, before wed even finished our drinks, we were HUSTLED in no uncertain terms, to go and pay. Given this is a hospitality industry, and this establishment has been going for decades, I was surprised that the boss woman wasnt able to do this in a more customer-facing way, it certainly couldve been handled better! So although we were planning to go back to try their special seafood menu, I think well be opting to go elsewhere...

The Grain Barge is a lovely location in the centre of Peterborough for a tasty Chinese meal. As you can tell from the name the restaurant is in a converted barge which is permanently moored on the River Nene. The restaurant comfortably seats around 50 guests on tables of 2-4 seats but tables could be pushed together for larger parties. The menu is standard for a Chinese restaurant with all the usual favourites. Upon being seated there was a plate of prawn crackers to enjoy. We opted to share the set menu priced at £16.50 per head. For this we had a sharing platter of mixed starters which included crispy seaweed, ribs, satay chicken, filled dumplings and prawn toast with a whole prawn on top. Next there was half a duck to share with the usual accompaniments. Then there were three main dishes, one of beef, one of chicken and a third of pork together with egg fried rice. By the end of all that we were both quite full so opted against any dessert. I had two pints of Carlsberg and my wife had a large diet coke. All together the bill came to £43 which seemed reasonable to me. The service was excellent with the staff being attentive but not overly so. We dined at 5pm on a Saturday evening and were the first customers of the evening but by the time we were leaving around 6.15 the restaurant was over half full. We had booked a reservation beforehand. Based on my experience I would heartily recommend this restaurant and look forward to being able to return again.

This review is to express my upsetting experiences, particularly to the middle aged, Asian manager in this restaurant. I went to this restaurant with my two white friends and me myself is Chinese background. The reason why I stress the ethnic here is because I felt being treated differently here by this Asian looking, middle aged woman. When she started to take the order, she instructed me to stop ordering starters and instructed my friends to order starter. Then, she started saying I m very busy here, I will order the main for you later and went away. We didn t even get a chance to order any main food after an hour siting there. I was so upset and made complaints. She made a fake smile and asked us to leave as she didn t want to serve us and she didn t want to ask her colleagues to help either. I always feel close to Asian people in UK as we share similar culture background. However, it s not uncommon to see Asian people with low self-esteem, and you can see they would prefer to please Caucasian than asian. Very bad experiences. The sauce for roast duck is too salty too.

Visited with 4 friends. We had the set menu. Service was fantastic each course was served with enough time in between to chat and drink. Staff were friendly and helpful and supplied chopsticks so I could..have a go! Delicious food and plentiful, and wow what great value. I havent visited for over 20 years and The Grain Barge still retains all of its charm. Will be going back again soon. Highly recommend this restaurant if you are a novice with this type of cuisine as the staff will help you decide. A perfect choice for a birthday meal!

Previous experience lovely food .but we Informed them we have a young baby but he s really good so won t be any bother. If he made the slightest noise the dirty looks we got from some of the staff and how one of them stood close by just glaring at us. It made us feel so uncomfortable. I would ve understood if my son had been crying or screaming but he was so quiet and slept for most of it. Next time we went to book we were told - babies are not welcome anymore .such a shame as when we have a family get together that is inclusive of everyone. Clearly not a family place. Won t be going back

The service was a bit hit and miss. The older waitress I found to be quite rude and abrupt and didnt really listen. The younger waitress was better. Food was mediocre. Wont be rushing back

This is a Chinese restaurant converted from a trading barge, and moored on the banks of the River Nene in Peterborough. With seating on two levels, the tables upstairs have nice views of the riverside and embankment. The food is pretty good, too, and the staff very friendly.

Delicious food. Helpful, attentive staff. Our temperatures were taken as we entered. The Barge and the interior decor are not plush, but dont let that put you off, the food is why you go to a restaurant, isnt it? And the food here is delicious and plentiful. We had the Set Menu and couldnt finish it all! Parking close by, it is pay and display, but currently only £2.50 for the whole evening.

We visited The Grain Barge during a trip to see a friend in Peterborough. Our friend had told us great things about the food and we were looking forward to trying it ourselves. The experience lived up to the hype! We received friendly, welcoming service and did not feel rushed at any point. We choose the set menu and the waitress explained what that included. One of the group does not like nuts (not an allergy) and they offered to serve the satay sauce in a separate dish so that the chicken could be eaten without sauce. The food was delicious and we felt comfortably full at the end of the meal. We will definitely return to The Grain Barge next time we are in Peterborough.
