1298 Sushi in Pickering

This was a requested spot for my 15 year Olds birthday dinner. We were looking for an all you can enjoy sushi place since our local spot closed down after covid. The food came out hot and was very tasty! The servers are polite and clear the tables often. The washroom was clean, but only one stall seemed to be available. (Only 2 in the womans washroom) just be aware. Be sure to make sure you confirm the birthday of your children with the server. They thought my 10 year old was a lot older than she was. They had no problem giving the childrens rate. My favorite was the salad, the miso soup and the mein dishes. Seating is comfortable and tables are large. Will visit again the next time we are looking for a place to eat in pickering.

California roll used just the skins of cucumber and skimped on the avocado and the fish roe. Gave stale ginger.

I ve been getting take out from here for over 4 years. Always quick and easy and not overly expensive.

Food quality was not palatable. Approached the manager with dignity and respect and asked for a small discount - only to be yelled at and spat on in my face. My dignity was then compromised.

The food is so delicious here. It is one of those restaurants you really look forward going to every time. I always know its going to be good and it is one of my all time favourites near me. Definitely recommend if you like Japanese Cuisine.

Ive been to a lot of AYCE sushi places, but wanted to try something new. Their choices were great and loved the main courses, but I sadly found their dessert lacking of sweetness, some of them were almost bland. The experience was okay, but I felt towards the end, one of the servers started hovering on us and always asking every few minutes if we wanted to still order or if we were finished. The initial environment was okay, but when you started walking around I could see people, not sure if they were workers, sleeping in the unoccupied tables, it kind of made me feel uneasy. I think with this experience I am still debating whether I would like to return or just stick to online ordering as I did enjoy their sushi and mains.

Pretty bad customer service. We are still eating and the server trying to get our plates due to changing time between lunch and dinner. We spent $170.00 for rushing our time. I will not recommend this restaurant to anyone.

Food is very good , service is ol but not so friendly , we had a hair in one of the sushi plates and when we pointed to the lady ,she was not happy and she called the manger , who came kind of angry , pulled the hair out and kept arguing that it is not one of his staff, he even pulled out and put it on a piece of tissue trying to prove his point.

This is pretty much my favourite food experience to date. You dont just get one server. They all work together to get you whatever you want quickly and cleanup the leftovers as well. Very friendly and quiet which is perfect for when the food coma sets in. I highly recommend eating here and plan to do so regularly myself. The quality of the sushi and all of the food was perfect. Also unlimited ice cream with 5 different flavors for the kids mean we didnt have to rush at all. Bon appetite

Orders came in so slow and there were only 3 tables (6 adults, 2 kids) being served in the whole restaurant. Had to ask server for our order despite having ordered through the iPad. Twice. Servers were also impatient and in a hurry.

Disappointing experience at 1298 Sushi. We usually go to a couple other sushi restaurants in the area but thought we would give this one a try. The interior was pleasing and and the booths were nice and cozy. Unfortunately the customer service was bad from the beginning. Our waitress ignored us as she approached our table, she barely made eye contact or address us directly. She just handed us a dirty iPad and took a quick drink order. Received our first order quickly which was nice. The food itself was ok for the price but not amazing, and most of it was either smothered in a sauce that was either bland or overly sweet. I also found the sushi rice too sweet as well. Unfortunate we werent unable to finish some the rice from the roles due to the taste and were reprimanded for wasting food. That left us with not only a bad taste in our mouth for the sushi but the overall experience. There are much better sushi places in the area that provide way better food and much better service

Many choices of tasty sushi with good service. Each table has a tablet to place orders. My favourites are spider roll and avocado eel hand roll.

Well the restaurant asked me to clarify so Im editing this no context review to have context. 1. This place has the WORST servers Ive actually ever had. Its insane. The entire staff rush you to eat your food and get tf out. They tossed our food on the table, dont say anything, good or bad. Theyre just silent and hover the entire time. 2. The food actually used to be decent, but in the last year or two its gone severely downhill. Ive actually paid the fee for wasted food because I literally couldnt stomach it. 3. The fees. Its not a flat few, which I may be able to understand, but Ive had maybe 3 pieces (total) of food that I couldnt eat (see #2) and was charged over $5. I would highly NOT recommend you go to 1298 Sushi if you have any sense, tastebuds or manners because they wont reciprocate any of it. Ive tried this place several times in hopes MAYBE its changed, but unfortunately not.

Maki rolls here are super fresh, and much larger than the nearby competition. Service is extremely fast, and the staff is very attentive. Restaurant is clean and nicely maintained. Highly recommended.

Honestly the sushi itself isn t very bad, I think most people might actually enjoy it. However, several of the non sushi items that were served were either burnt, undercooked, or not up the par. The food itself was served quickly, but I d be willing to accept longer wait times if it meant that I got served proper rice. Not only was the seasoning lacking or completely absent, but the rice itself tasted like it was microwaved on kitchen nightmares; crispy on the outside but very undercooked in the inside of it. It made me depressed to know that someone messed up on fried rice. The noodles were also under seasoned and yellow. Maybe that was a culinary choice, but it didn t look very appealing. The caramel pudding was burnt somehow, and had a crisp warm and burnt flavour to it. The worst thing though by far, was that they had the audacity to charge TEN dollars for not finishing your food. So not only were we obligated to eat the food (because we ordered it), but we also had to pay additional money just because we didn t want to finish it. 45 bucks that could ve honestly went to a better place. Just order sushi and forget everything else

Very reasonable prices and the food was delicious

I went today and I felt so sick of the food, it s as if the quality of the oil used for fried portions was bad. I had an upset stomach and explained to the waitress but she said she couldn t take it away because of food waste, which I understand but how am I supposed to eat something that s not sitting well with me? Anyway, whenever I ordered here it has been fine, but today was just awful. I will not be returning.

Quality has significantly gone down.. not worth the cost. Our most recent visit will be our last time here. On two different occasions, we sat for over 30mins without receiving any food. The first time this happened, we mentioned to the server that our order of sashimi (or anything else for that matter) has not arrived and it s been over half n hr since we had ordered. Food came shortly after our reminder. We then placed an order for tempura and waited another 40 minutes. When we reminded the server again, she brushed us off and told us the chef was busy. Mind you, this was on a weekday evening and there were only 3 other tables there. When we became visibly upset that we are paying for all you can eat service without being served consistent food, the servers became apologetic and brought out the food. Horrible experience overall - would not be returning as there are many better options for a better value.

Very little fish for a lot of rice. Anorexic nigiri. Definitely the thinnest pieces of fish Ive had for sushis, even including AYCE. Taste is not good. Will not go again.

Worst All you can eat place I have ever been to. We got there around 8:45 pm and they were supposed to close at 10pm. The lady said last order can be placed at 9:30pm. They rushed pretty much everything. Food was so bad. The sides were ok but the sushi was tasteless. We asked for forks and never received any, so I ended up eating with my hands. They started cleaning the empty tables and mopping before 9:30pm. The smell of the cleaning products were unbearable and so strong to sit and eat. So we just left. Overall I would give 0 stars for food quality, service and price. Would not go back or recommend. Save your money and get a frozen entree instead.

Yesterday my wife ordered from the restaurant, first time that she tried it and she got food poisoning.

Honestly, in my opinion one of the best CHEAP AYCE Sushi places you can go to! But dont come here expecting fancy unique sushi though. My friends and I always have a great time comming here and enjoy their food. Their Sushi are usually basic and simple but they definitely hit the spot with your craving. Price wise and taste wise definitely a spot I recommend!

This place wants to fill you up with rice. Their sushi pieces have mostly rice and very thin pieces of salmon/sushi. Your orders will not come with the amount you want. I ordered 10 salmon rose but instead got 2. Whatever order you make they will reduce it and give you less. Then, before paying the manager tells us that we ordered too much. But isnt this all you can eat sushi?? Treat your customers with more respect and change your restaurant to pay by the plate if you are going to give people less food and dont want them to order anything. Will never come back here

Cant stop saying, one of our favourite sushi places to go to. Food is always fresh and fast, and very tasty. Decent portions, lots of options... definitely recommended.

One of my go to sushi spots in the GTA. Their menu isn t as big as most, but they re not small either. I like their speciality sushi and teriyakis. The quality is amazing and the servers are hospitable and quick. Not much of a difference between lunch to dinner, the only con in my opinion.

Dining at 1298 Sushi is a delight. Quick ordering is possible by using the gadget- tablet to access the menu list. Count a few seconds and your order is there. Nice ambiance and friendly staff they have there.

The Atmosphere and overall design of the place is good, the food arrived quick! But the sushi was kinda hard and the chicken too but Ill give it 4 stars I recommend

One of our local go to spots for all you can eat sushi. There is rarely a wait for a table. Once seated, the server will hand you a tablet so you can. Begin ordering. Orders come out very quickly, so, be sure to pace yourself with orders. They have also been great with accommodating our partys food allergies. We found that letting the server know about these allergies before submitting our first order works best. The menu has most of the usual AYCE faire, including red tuna and blowtorched sushi. Their house rolls are creative and fresh. They also offer other dishes like dim sum and pad thai. Would highly recommend this restaurant for those looking to enjoy a variety of food at a reasonable price.

decided to go with my friend after the gym because we thought we could eat alot after a good workout, unfortunately , we were wrong, the food tasted very bland, and very old. Had the ayce on monday and it costed $100 after $20 sur charge for not finishing the sushi that was full of heavy rice. didnt even order much, each sushi order comes with large portions

We have consistently gotten take out from here a few times a month over the last couple of years. We finally were able to make it in for AYCE sushi, and omg, was it worth it! The service is quick, and the food is fresh. Everything was at the perfect temperature. The booths are comfortable, and the tablet ordering makes it so easy to order, even for the kiddos. Over all great restaurant that I highly recommend. Kid-friendliness: They have pricing for kids and readily have chopsticks made up for kids to use so its easier.

Best sushi place that Ive been too! Recently moved to the Durham area and was looking for a good sushi place. A friend suggested 1298, and havent tried anywhere else since then. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone

Went here for the ayce lunch today and was beyond disappointed with both the service and food. Feels like l went back in time to the 80s, sushi made with a very thin slice of fish on a ton of rice, all the hot dishes were with some kind of cooked meat or fish drenched with loads of teriyaki sauce even the menu didnt state teriyaki or deep fried food that are soaked in oil, meat were over cooked and no flavour. The quality of food was quite poor and same with the service, the tablet for ordering didnt work properly, it had a hard time putting orders in and servers were not willing to help. I always got my sushi and prepared food at the supermarket next door which is way better and brought them home to eat, l felt like a change today n decided to dine in at this restaurant and yet again another disappointment, paying 3 times the price and getting 3 times worse quality food.

If you want to sit down and eat some sushi definitely come here you order from a tablet and the food comes to within like 5 minutes the food is somewhat low quality but that doesnt mean its not delicious

Amazing food! I have done dine in and take out here, and the food is always so tasty. For all the parents with strollers and plan to dine in, the walkways in the dining area are a bit tight, so you wont be able to bring your stroller right up to your table. We were asked to keep our stroller in the front area of the restaurant. Its probably best to just leave the stroller in the car.

This place os going down the hill. Rude servers, way below average food quality. Stale taste and not fresh at all!! Plus they throw the plates at you and dont even communicate properly. I even found a hair in my salad and when I asked the server to take it back because of this she gave me a nasty look as If Im crazy. I really dont appreciate this place at all anymore. So many other decent all you can eat sushi in the area that deserves my business.

Hated the udon. The broth had no taste. The spicy kani salad was amazing so was the seaweed salad. The sashimi were great. Sushi was fine. I read in one of the reviews its not the greatest but it will definitely fulfill your sushi cravings and I agree. All in all fine for the price. 7/10 all in all.

This sushi spot has so much potential. They have variety of options. Loved the siumai. Service is what you would expect from a regular AYCE. Only hoping that they would improve quality control because we were served sashimi that didnt look fresh, and it curling at the tip. May be an isolated event but still impact the overall experience. Overall, it was okay.

Got takeout (eel roll, butterfish roll, salmon lover set) and it was okay, not great. Wouldnt be worth writing a review about, but I got horrible food poisoning. Suspect it was from the salmon sushi which was already warm when I picked it up and didnt taste fresh. Would not recommend.

We have been coming here lately instead of the other options as the quality and speed of service/food is beyond better here. The selection is pretty big and they make very tasty sushi. They have that brown/purple rice here, and its becoming a favorite of mine to purchase when eating rolls. Its smaller than some of the chain style ones, but it feels comfy and high end.

Fantastic experience. Went on a Tuesday evening for dinner buffet. The price was better than average for dinner sushi buffet ($32.99 per adult was their price). Food came out so fast, so fresh and tasty. Great selection of rolls, sushi and sashimi. This will be my new go-to spot for AYCE sushi in Durham region.

We were a table of 6 and everyone was happy with the AYCE choices. Food came out quickly and was always fresh. Remember to pay CASH and you get a 10% discount.

I thought this place would be a great sushi option since their lunch all you can eat menu price was so reasonable, however, when I saw all their roles I knew why its so cheap. They wrap an extra layer of rice to fill it and have so little meat and other stuff in there. Essentially they hope you get full off the rice. We opened up quite a few roles to find the same thing. See pictures for proof. Smh, so disappointed.

I got a Dundas Role today ( basically butter fish on top of dynamite). Not only that the butter fish was so soggy but the cucumber strips in the middle of the dynamite roll were not even cucumber! They were thinly stripped skin of cucumber! And I could barely see the shrimps inside the roll itself as well as the avocado. So very poorly made and quality was on the fence. I will likely not go back to this restaurant. Ive bought rolls from here about 5 times and this time Im extremely disappointed. I hope that I do not get food poisoning!

Everything tastes great and I love how fast the food comes out! My most recent visit, there was one waitress that kept getting our order wrong and she didnt stop to answer our questions and completely ignored us. Other than that, good experience!

Good price but wouldn t come again. The rolls we had were mostly, I m almost positive, pre-made instead of made to order. They were completely cold and the rice was cold and gelatinous unlike fresh rice where it s still slightly warm, and the nori had the kind of chewy texture it gets when it s not eaten right away or is put in the fridge. The rolls that tasted like this were the ones with salmon and other things that can be put in the fridge without them turning colour, and the ones that were less common rolls/had things like avocado that will turn colour when not fresh were good and seemed to be freshly made. The salmon one top of some of the rolls was not cut well and some very clearly was old and had altered colouration around the sides where it was thinner- a dead giveaway that it s not cut freshly. Don t recommend. Pay a little more and go somewhere with better quality.

Fish had a very foul odour to it, used to come here when it was called Edamame.....food has gone down considerably

For takeout there isn t a better spot. I usually like to sit in and enjoy my sushi, ayce or al la cart but especially during the pandemic it was nice to have a place that offered salmon lover and tuna lover without spending big bucks to get a decent amount

Beat all you can eat place hands down 4th visit here , seem like quality went down from previous , I didn t get all my order! I came here for chilli chicken specifically and it was the worse one I had today.

I d give zero if I could. Completely mess up my order on skip the dishes. I call them. They say they will make good and ask for my number. Call them to get more food in addition to making good on my wrong order. They no longer have my number. Shady garbage people. They won t respond to this which tells you everything. Gross and never again.

Probably the worst sushi Ive ever eaten. Each sets of rolls that I ordered was warm, soggy, weirdly chewy and lacked any flavor. Poorly made as the stuffings would fall out or the rice/roll would unravel. Nice service but my recent order from here has made me not want to eat sushi for a while.

poor service. waited over an hour for my order for a delivery and I ordered an hour before they closed. I spoke to them on the phone and they advised that they would wait for the driver but when the driver arrived at the store, no one was there.

Worst sushi place Ive been in the entire gta. They reuse lemons that seemingly have been squeezed already, overly packed sushi rolls unseasoned rice with fish that shouldve been tossed out days ago.

Needed some alone time and since this place is close to home decided to go. I should have stayed home and ordered in. I got there at around 6:45pm got seated and placed my order and at this time the section I was placed in was only myself and another couple . My dishes came very slow I was done eating one before the other even came. Placed another order waited 15 mins by this time the section started to fill up, I told a waitress I placed another order and nothing came she said ok and walked off I assumed she was going to check on my order I was wrong I waited another 10 mins. Nothing told another waitress I m still waiting on my order she to walked away and again I assumed she was going to check on my food at this point the other patrons that came after I was already sitting waiting for my food have gotten their dishes and I m sitting there with an empty table waiting. I was trying not to be rude as we are already stereotyped but it was ridiculous at this point I was being blatantly ignored. I told one more waitress and I even put in another order and still after 10 mins I got upset and asked for the check put my coat on and what do you know here comes my food I have been waiting dam near 40 mins for, she then asks ohh you don t want anymore I say NO I need the check please. I paid my bill the waitress came and said sorry I politely said please move and walked out that establishment. I am always willing to give 2nd chances but this was not the 1st time having a not so pleasant experience here and it will certainly be my last. It was embarrassing and disgusting to sit there and watch everyone else be served and not myself.NEVER AGAIN.

The worst sushi Ive ever had. Wont go back. The Tuna was very thick and dense. The salad was just lettuce, a slice of cucumber and a container of dressing. Been enjoying Japanese cuisine all my life and this was by far the sorriest example yet.

Attended AYCE Lunch at this location and it is solid for the price. Some items did not seem as fresh as others, but overall taste was good. A tad too much rice on some of the rolls! Staff are friendly and nice

Slow and terrible service. Went there yesterday to which the place was almost empty. Waitress kept asking us if we were done with ordering which by the way is RUDE and gives off a rushed atmosphere. In addition, it was no where near closing time. When people come to your establishment, try to treat them kindly as they are paying for the service. Not only that, we ordered a bunch of items which never came after waiting so long. When asked where they were, the waitress just dismissed the question. We left shortly after that.Please look for other sushi establishments in the area, they dont deserve business.

I wish I could give you zero stars for this please.I went there for the very first time a couple days ago and I was rushed to eat my food when it was only 9 PM and the restaurant closes at 10.the waiter took the iPad away before it even hit 930 because they wanted to close the restaurant early

When I tell you, the ABSOLUTE WORST service experience I ve ever had!! First, the staff made a fuss when two of us went back out to the car for a quickly after being seated, even though our friend was still at the table. Three different employees came up to us, and even though we came back within a couple minutes, they were still talking to us about it and saying that it s to make sure people don t run out on the bill we hadn t even got our water let alone looked at the menu to place orders, so I m not sure what the issue was. They would start clearing our plates even if we weren t done eating it. Mind you I can t really do much when she already has it in her hand before she s even asked. The staff would kind of toss our food down on the table carelessly. I kid you not when I say the staff was shutting down the restaurant while we were still eating. Please keep in mind, all of this is happening at like 8:30pm and they close at 10pm. We were the last table, and even though it was only five minutes after 9. The staff were all standing around, watching us while we were finishing our meals. Around 9:15pm is when they legit TURNED OFF THE LIGHTS while we were still eating. I was honestly flabbergasted. Beyond rude, beyond unacceptable, honestly the worst dining experience I ve had to date.

First time trying and likely the last time. Ordered a Maki tray and sashimi set through UberEats. Decided to give this place a shot as the prices seemed reasonable despite the additional fees. Considering Durham, I already have low expectations for nearly any kind of Asian food, especially sushi, lol. Put it this way, the best sushi in this area would simply be average in core Toronto (Scarborough, Markham, North York, etc). That said, this restaurant isnt the best of Durham, but average. The biggest gripe would be the Chicken Tempura Roll as part of the maki tray.... Why is that even a thing?? Please remove it from the menu. Nobody should taste such an awful roll. The chicken was extremely dry... Think week old chicken and then you nuked it further in the microwave. All the other rolls were okay, but construction could improve as some fell apart. Sashimi: Surprisingly good tilapia pieces, had a nice texture to it. Red tuna was the worst... Colour was off and didnt taste fresh. Overall, Id rather pay a few extra dollars to have a more enjoyable and fresher tasting sushi experience (despite staying in Durham).

We do every 2 weeks takeout as a family - they are our go to place in Pickering.
