One of our favourite places. Always delicious food and impeccable service. There are bigger plate options, as well as a very reasonably priced snack menu.
We had an amazing dinner at Hartley’s Tavern. The oysters were incredibly fresh, bursting with flavor, and perfectly chilled. They were some of the best I've had! The bison tartare was also a standout dish, beautifully seasoned and tender, with a unique and rich taste. Highly recommend both for an unforgettable dining experience!
Excellent food, great service & a good time. Fine dining without the baggage. Top tier service minus any pomp - putting the effort in the right places. Food was executed to a high degree with excellent sauces, balance, temperature and prep. Everything came out promptly & the addition of some kid friendly options is a nice touch 👌. Scallops were a standout, as was the duck two ways. Recommended
Excellent restaurant! The meat was absolutely tender, and the sauce that accompanied the steak was delicious and full of flavour. The sizes were delicious, and cooked perfectly. The salad was also full of flavour. In fact, I started making the salads like this as an appetizer when I receive guests. You have to try this restaurant. You're paying for the excellent quality of food and service.
Hartley’s, don’t you dare ever change! We had a fantastic dinner experience here on a gals weekend away. Shelby was a friendly, knowledgeable, sociable and all around fantastic server. She gave amazing recommendations and was instrumental in helping us curate the most magnificent meal! We ordered a bottle rosé - one from California, can’t remember the name. I wish I could bc I would highly recommend - such easy drinking! We moved on to two starters - pork cheek and the special (lamb sausage pesto fusilli - incredible!! Flavours melded perfectly. We headed into our mains which were; The hanger steak - perfectly seasoned, steak was so tender and cooked to perfection Asparagus risotto - add scallops - Words cannot describe this dish. The scallops were like butter, the flavours were elegant and married perfectly. Dessert was the carrot cake and the special - chocolate cake and ice cream. Both very delicious! Would absolutely recommend Hartley’s as one of your PEC stops. Pictures of the dessert below and then our empty plates for the rest of the items bc we were not even thinking about pictures in the moment!
Absolutely delicious. Went for the three course Countylicius offering and was not disappointed. Every cooked to perfection and one of the best carrot cakes I've been had. Staff were great. Cool place in a great location.
Went there with some friends for dinner during county-licious. We'd not been before but will say that everyone really enjoyed the experience. The special menu had many great choices of one time features and favorites from the past to showcase their fantastic, always changing menu, at a reasonable price. Go there. Eat there. LOVE IT THERE!
My wife and I had a very nice experience at Hartleys. The service was not overly warm but extremely professional, organized, and welcoming enough, and the staff was very much on top of things. The decor and atmosphere created seemed like it could be very calming and intimate on the right night. During our visit, there were a couple of larger groups that were very loud and took that away from that a little, but that is not necessarily a reflection of the establishment. The food was a pleasant surprise. The recommendations from the waiter were spot on. The mushrooms on toast were such a nice starter. Very delicious and elegant. Robbys Fish was so perfectly prepared and flavoured. We loved it. The creme brulee, exceptional. We will definitely look forward to trying it again 💯.
Thank you for this pleasant evening! Super warm and professional service in this gourmet restaurant. Great discovery. We really feel that the team wants us to have a great time. We will come back.
Great place. Came here for Countylicious & the staff was awesome. It was the owner s birthday as well! (We came for my gf s big day) Everything was great!
We were two couples who went for Countylicious. Service from all the staff was impeccable. The food absolutely delicious. This is why we return to Hartley s regularly.
We stumbled upon Hartley and had an incredible meal. Amazing service, good value and spectacular food.
Twice this year Ive had to make room on my top 5 meals of all time time and this was one of them! The tasting menu by Jared only lacked a thesaurus for me to find more great words to describe it. Blaines suggestions and attentiveness were spot on. This is definitely a reason to stop in Picton! Book early, as soon as this place gets better known itll be impossible to get a table.
We celebrated our anniversary at Hartleys Tavern last night and it was incredible, the food and service was elite- can t wait to return.
A Culinary Gem in The County We arrived late in The County, craving a quick bite, and stumbled upon Hartleys, expecting a typical tavern experience. What we discovered was anything but ordinary. Hartleys is not your run-of-the-mill tavern it s a haven of fine dining excellence. From the moment we walked in, the ambiance set the tone for an unforgettable meal. Our server, Kieran, was exceptional. His deep knowledge of the menu, the wine selection, and the local area made our dining experience even more special. He guided us through the evening with a perfect balance of professionalism and warmth. Each dish was a testament to the chef s craft, beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. Hartleys is a true gem in The County, offering not just a meal but a memorable dining experience. Highly recommended for anyone seeking a touch of culinary excellence.
Great time at Hartleys! The food was delicious and our server was great. Definitively recommend if you want a good dinner in Picton.
Everything was absolutely perfect, highly recommended
Beautiful atmosphere, very welcoming staff, the dishes were tasty!
This place is unreal. One of the best in Eastern Ontario. Absolute world class food AND service. The scallops are sublime. Attendance by staff was on point, great selling job, every dish and every bite was complex and flavourful. Will return.
Spur of the moment choice but so happy we stopped by for dinner. Sat at the counter and enjoyed oysters, lobster and local PEC wines. Very enjoyable evening. Thanks for having us.
My daughter and I came for dinner. She had the lobster on toast, I had the duck breast. The food was excellent. Their french fries are the best. The drinks were amazing.
Fantastic venison
Service was top notch and the food was divine! Fabulous fish and mushroom risotto and the special lamb ragu dish of the day were all we talked about for the rest of the weekend.
Fantastic place -- great food, great drinks, great people, great service. What more could one want? Just a wonderful place -- our favourite restaurant in the County!
Great food, Great service Food
June 2024 - Jared and team still amazing back of house, and Janine, Shelby and team in the front. Remarkable fine dining. Delicious course after course. Excellent value overall. January 2023 update - another terrific experience courtesy of Jared & Jim in the back and Janine & Shelby front of house. Tasty meal skillfully prepared, terrific PEC fine dining. JUNE 2020 Shelby front of house and Jared in the kitchen ... killer combo. First post-COVID patio service of the summer for Hartley s a big success. Thank you!
We love this restaurant. My wife and I are frequent patrons and we make a special event of our Fridays date nights. Every Friday I get the fish and chips and I must say that it is the best fish and chips I have ever had! The batter is awesome and the portions of the always fresh halibut are huge! The chef at Hartley s has nailed what people who really know fish and chips want. My wife is a more adventurous and like to experience the variety that the menu has to offer. The seasonal menu always reflects the local ingredients that make tourists and locals visit Hartley Tavern again and again. In addition, the great staff and the crew on the kitchen are fabulous. This is a great place to bring friends and family for a truly amazing dining experience. I will be back next week and I am bringing family with me to share the spectacular dining at Hartley s Tavern.
An absolutely wonderful time here. Went with a large group of 18 people including 8 kids. They were very accommodating and so friendly! Everything was perfectly cooked, well plated, and delicious. Service was excellent as well. Will come again for sure.
The best meal Ive had either in Toronto where I live or in P.E.C. the fish and chips were to die for and where I grew up in belfast ireland fish and chips was a weekly meal. The staff were extremely helpful and very pleasant..what a great experience dining in hartleys was. Cant wait to go back there.
Stumbled upon this place on our vacation with the kids. Food was top notch. And our server Kieran made us feel right at home (tip him well). So much so we came back two nights in a row. Thank you for giving us an amazing experience during our vacation.
Awesome dinner last night at Hartleys Tavern. Outstanding food, spectacular service and the atmosphere was great! We will be back, thank you!
Wow, amazing place. Delicious food. We came with my parents... They were both also blown away!
2024: Wonderful food, as always. Impeccable, attentive but not intrusive service. Enjoyed the rabbit fusilli and the exceptional duck duo. The farm-to-table special was so fresh! Mushroom risotto was unique and flavouful. Desserts delightful too. Soothing, welcoming atmosphere and friendly, knowledgeable, responsive staff. Always a pleasure to visit Hartleys Tavern - a must for us every year. 2023: Fantastic meal. Three courses for $66. Pea flan was nuanced and flavourful - really enjoyed it . Rabbit salad was nice too. Halibut with lemony sticky saffron rice with light curry sauce was lovely. Staff work as a team, making a seamless experience for diners. Service is exceptional. Will be back again. 2022: Exceptional meal! Excellent service. $64 per person for a three course meal. Menu beautifully nuanced, and with unique items that compliment each other, it is a special experience. Bison tartar outstanding. Smoked gouda souffle light and tasty with accompanying salad with prosciutto; just the right amount and flavourful. Hanger steak served medium rare; not spicy but nicely savoury. Maple rum baba was amazing and not too heavy; great mix of tastes, and yummy. Walnut tart financier with blue cheese ice cream was fantastic. A really great 3 course meal that was filling, but not too much food and the most interesting menu weve seen in a while. Staff are welcoming and friendly. They know the menu and what to serve with each item. Good recommendations. Unique and flavourful menu items. More an upscale bistro than a tavern. Highly recommend. An experience we will repeat!
Service was incredible, food was incredible, just an overall unbelievably wonderful experience! Thank you Shelby, Blaine, and Jared for being so awesome and making our time there so perfect!
Incredibly flavorful. They bring out the most out of each ingredient. Service and atmosphere are excellent.
The most expensive and average fish n chips I ever ate in my life. Not worth the money, time and experience.
This is by far our favourite restaurant in town! The atmosphere is amazing, the food is ALWAYS consistent and absolutely delicious! The staff is friendly and knowledgeable and the best of the best! Highly recommend to every person I meet!
We can t say enough nice things about Hartley s. The food, wonderful staff and the most comforting atmosphere is what keeps us coming back. We love this place - the people, service and our experience. Highly recommend!
Love this place. Fantastic food and great vibe. Jeanine, Jim, Jerrod and Shelby (and Blaine and Jordan) run an impeccable business. Act like a local and sit at the bar!
We were a party of three women escaping city life in the county. We had a fantastic dinner (on the patio) thanks in equal part to the lovely food and to the attentive and exceptional service of a server whose name unfortunately escapes us. She was delightfully warm, authentic, effortlessly knowledgeable, and by the end of the meal we felt so touched by the experience that she came up repeatedly in conversation throughout our weekend. We felt so strongly about the experience and the potential of this young woman that we felt to write this review. She was a true ambassador of the county, the restaurant and the family establishment. We have visited premier restaurants around the world and you stood out of all of them. Thank you strawberry blond, curly haired server in the black v-neck dress with a background in marketing, and a fish gurgle water pitcher. You re a superstar. We would hire you in 2 mins.
Best restaurant in Picton! My wife and I love Hartleys Restaurant for the delicious food every time! It s our go to spot for a great friendly atmosphere with attentive and knowledgeable staff. Whether it s your meal selection you have a question about, or a good wine to pair Shelby & Janine are always there with a smile and offer an excellent suggestion. Jarod the chef is always updating the menu and his wizardry in the kitchen is impressive. This time I had the hanger steak with sweet potato purée. sautéed broccolini & Pilipino chocolate sauce !! What a marvellous combination for my palate!! Thank you all so much for making our special day special with the champagne & candle finish!!! Parking: There is a huge lot opposite Giant Tiger where you can find ample parking as a dinner guest. Wheelchair accessibility: There is a wide ramp for easy sccess
One of my favourite restaurants in Picton. Great food, great staff and great drinks. Its a family affair and you can tell by the care they take in everything they do. Sit up at the bar and meet some new and interesting people.
A gem. Fresh oysters plus a seasonally rotating menu. I had a delicious halibut.
Had the countylicious menu and everything was great. The pork cheek and the duck breast were our favourites. Really well balanced dishes. The service is also really great and theyre always accommodating and friendly.
Absolutely amazing food, and their appreciation and passion for high quality food is clear. Highly recommend.
I want to simplify my review - The best dinner of my life.
Do not let the name fool you, top notch food and service. Too 10 meals ever
This is an excellent, unassuming dining experience. Went recently for date night and were highly impressed by the taste and portions of the food (Countylicious menu) and attentive, friendly service.
A little noisy but good food. Fun ambiance.
We went as 6 people to celebrate a family birthday. The service was excellent. It was a busy restaurant, but we never felt rushed. The noise level was perfect. We could all hear our conversations at our table. We had the 3 course dinner option with a few substitutions. The meals were all delicious with beautiful presentation. There are fancy cocktails and mocktails and a fairly extensive moderately priced wine list. We had the full selection of desserts between the 6 of us. The blue cheese ice cream sounded unusual for sure, but paired with the fresh figs and walnut cakes, it was really unique and tasty. All of the starters, meals and desserts were excellent and we were all very full and satisfied!! I highly recommended and will be happy to return!!
My partner and I both had the 3 course dinner and shared 6 different plates. Everything on the plate was there for a reason. Beautiful presentation, exquisite taste, perfectly cooked. Food : 5/5
Excellent culinary experience, very beautiful decor, very hot meals, beautiful culinary imagination, very cordial employees and owner.
My wife made reservations at Hartley s for my 65th birthday as she knows it is my favourite eating establishment in Picton. The food is delicious and presented well. Shelby s infectious smile and personality are always a great way to start the evening! Our server Blaine was well dressed & attentive outlining the changes to the menu-always something new & tasty prepared by Jarod the amazing chef! Janine the owner always comes by with a pleasant smile & asks about your meal. The entire staff are part of a successful team that compliments each other & positively promotes Hartley s restaurant. I highly recommend Hartley s in PEC. Parking: There are at least 50 outdoor parking spots available when attending the restaurant. The parking lot is shared with Giant Tiger. Wheelchair accessibility: There is a wheelchair ramp to front entrance
Excellent night out. Wheelchair accessibility: There is a ramp to the main dining room. The patio has a step down. Food : 5/5 |
Went this evening in a group of 4 to celebrate our anniversary, my sister s retirement and upcoming milestone birthday. Excellent service by all staff, who were very accommodating when we asked about switching some options on their fixed menu items, with us willing to pay for the difference. Food was delicious and presentation was awesome. Some had the seared duck breast, the halibut and the hanger steak. Credit goes to the young Chef and all the staff. Highly recommended and will definitely be visiting again when I am down from Toronto.
I went to Hartley s Tavern to celebrate my birthday. From beginning to end, the service was incredible and all the staff super friendly. The atmosphere was welcoming and chill and the food was simply delicious!
The name Tavern doesn t do it justice! I think it should be called Hartley House. This is a fabulous fine dining experience with awesome attentive wait staff. Don t miss this tucked away spot off the Main Street when visiting Picton!
Great food, even better service
I don t give away five stars very often but I have to say Hartley s surprised me. Some of the best service I ve ever experienced and easily one of the top meals I ve had in a long time very cool place in a very cool part of town.
Excellent service and wonderful advice with Jeninne!
The menu is creative and delicious, and the service is lovely. It is a great family run place, you can feel their passion for what they do. Parking: You can use the Giant Tiger lot next to the restaurant
The plates were really good but we believe there still is room for some improvement. Our waiter was top tier and had all the proper etiquette, lighting and temperature were well monitored. Overall strongly recommended!
10/10 the whole way through from the customer service - environment - food & drink are very fresh made in house you can tell ! We had Blane as our server very nice man this place is a 5 star !! Parking: Great small location but it s very comfortable! Quality over quantity any day !
We ate on the terrace last Saturday and we were incredibly impressed by the impeccable service and the dishes tasted! Everything was absolutely delicious! Duck, venison, oysters, scallops, mushroom starter... Everything, everything, everything! Plus, a 3-course meal of this quality for $66 is really affordable! We highly recommend! Even more pleasant when you sleep in rented accommodation on the 2nd floor ;-)
After a very long day, moving a client to Picton from PETERBOROUGH, my team, and I were looking for a place to have dinner. I cannot say enough about how fantastic our meal was. The ambiance of the restaurant was wonderful but more importantly, the service that we received was absolutely outstanding Kudos to the Chef for creating such a wonderful environment, and many thanks to Shelby, who took such good care of for very weary women!
The food was exquisite and perfectly prepared. My drinks and wine pairing were on the mark as well. Our waitress knew what she was doing, was pleasant, helpful and got everything right. An overall enjoyable evening.
Truly wonderful and inspiring what the Hartley family have created. Welcoming and charming service, a menu for all which is fresh, unique, and carefully crafted. We will be back for sure during our next visit to Picton
Excellent dinner at Hartleys in P.E.C. My first time with a friend who had been before. She insisted on me trying the Lobster Roll, which was delicious, I could have eaten a few of those. The salad was fresh and tasty, and the steak was terrific, and the creme brulee for dessert was perfect (big size too!). Shelby (I think that is correct name...) was an awesome server. Would go back for more. I recommend it.
The food is ok but very overpriced
Take out on NYE - one of the best meals weve had in eons.
The food was delicious. The bison tartare nachos were amazing, as was the lamb Yorkshire pudding. The teriyaki steak was melt in your mouth and the duck was also very good. Kudos to the chef(s). It was by far the best meal we have ever had in the county! The service was also very good however, when it came time to pay, I noticed that we were charged for 3 glasses of wine that we didn t have - our server seemed upset that we pointed out the discrepancy and sent another employee to give us back the money. Very disappointing way to end a very wonderful yet costly night out.
Had the pleasure of dinning at Hartleys this past Thursday night. Very welcoming and the most wonderful dinning experience and cudo to the chef. Our server Blaine was most knowledgeable of the wine and food. He was also fun to talk with. Our meal was so beautifully plated, a work of art really. The food was so very delicious and cooked to perfection. All in all, it was a great evening. Special thanks to Pascal. Laela and Kathy PS. We will return.
I highly recommend this place. The food we ordered was so good.
Outstanding service, delicious food; incredible experience!
Lovely service, atmosphere and meals. I called in advance letting them know I m a vegan and they were able to provided an adapted meal for me. A bit of the pricier side but this is definitely reflected in the quality of the ingredients being used.
The service and food at Hartley s is incredible! We had the bison tartare = AMAZING, karaage chicken, royale with cheese, fries with garlic mayo and kimchi, fennel salad and finally the seared duck breast. We loved every bite. Inside has a very intimate and cozy vibe, we ate at the bar which was nice and private. We ll definitely be back the next time we re in town.
Great environment with great food! Super thoughtful staff and top notch service.
Blown away everytime I go here, pro tip, get a royale to go after your meal ;)
Dont let the name fool you, this place is not your typical tavern. It is a higher end restaurant with good food and good service. A nice selection of wine and beers and decent menu choices for good. Everything we had was delicious.
Friendly, great ownership. You can tell that they really take care of their restaurant and it shows in the food!
A wonderful experience. The food was excellent as was the service. I m not sure where the negative reviews came from. This place is a gem that we will definitely return to. Nice atmosphere and it felt like we were with family. Highly recommend Hartley s!
Hartley s Tavern is my favourite in Prince Edward County. The service is great and the food is inventive and delicious.
ABSOLUTELY MUST TRY RESTAURANT IF YOU ARE IN THE AREA! Dont be turned off by the name... this is definitely not a tavern, more like a very high end French bistro. The chef owner is absolutely obsessively passionate about the creation of each dish and its execution. Each dish is a flabbergasting experience. When receiving a new wave of dishes we said wow I dont know how many times. Were from Montreal and we had dinners at amazing restaurants all over Canada and Europe and this one ranks right up there with the best. At $64 for the three course meal it is simply a steal. We highly recommend the bison tartare, the souffle, the venison and the hanger steak (ranks way up there as one of the best steaks I ever had). We actually loved this place so much that we canceled our reservation in another restaurant to eat there again on our two day stay in Picton. Service is also very attentive, supremely professional without being intrusive. My only recommendation to the chef owner is to change the restaurant name to Hartleys Bistro as I suspect that potential clients may simply pass when they read tavern without taking the time to read the reviews.
Food is absolutely amazing. We are still dreaming about our dinner. Staff is very nice, ambiance is good. Dress up or casual. A little pricy but compared to other restaurants in the area its more reasonable.
This is easily *the best* restaurant in the County. The chef - who is incredibly young - is a friggin genius. They keep some standing items on the menu (e.g. hanger steak), but he plays with variations on them which are fantastic. A few years ago, the steak was done in a chocolate mole sauce which was unbelievable. This season, hes doing it marinated in a Roja sauce, and honestly they might both be in the top 5 steaks Ive had in my life. Almost everything here is amazing - whether simple and satisfying (like the tomato capellini) or insanely indulgent, like the brown butter lobster roll they are currently serving. The place is classy without being stuffy, amazing quality and not overpriced. I know this review may sound like Im connected to the restaurant, but it really is just that good. Lastly, so many restaurants pull off good appetizers and mains, but fall short in the desserts. I just had a walnut Financier with a blue cheese ice cream and candied figs which was good enough for my last meal on Earth. Cannot recommend this place enough.
Unique and creative dishes, along with excellent staff, make this a terrific choice when visiting Picton. We thoroughly recommend the crispy rabbit livers!
Great food and ambiance, everything we ordered was good as was the service
A very special supper to remember, served by wonderful friendly attentive staff. Very tasty cocktails. The mains were very flavourful, and the desserts were excellent too. The coquille St. Jacques (scallops appetizer) were delicate and beautifully done. Tempting to lick the plate for the sauce. The coffee encrusted venison was perfectly done, and more tender than any beef that I have had. The red snapper was tender and nicely matched with the African peanut stew. My partner had the rhubarb maple Baba, which took me back to childhood pleasures. I had the Walnut Financier dessert had blue cheese ice cream, tender figs, walnut clusters... So good! $240 with two cocktails, no wine and a shared appetizer. We will definitely remember the meal long after the price is forgotten.
Absolutely every dish we tried was incredible. Our favourite was the Duck Breast, which was cooked to perfection and had a great sauce along with it. The customer service was great, and the quality of food was more than worth the price.
We went for a dinner, the food was good but we waited more than 90min for plates to come out. Overall didn t enjoy the experience.
Here you sit very well and receive excellent service. The food is really very tasty. Price performance is right. A large parking lot is next door.
Service 5/5. Atmosphere 4/5. Food 3/5. Overall value for the money: 3/5. Very pricey for what you get. I dont mind spending good money on a night out but to sit across from a Giant Tiger and eat food with sweet sauces that taste like they were purchased from across the road, wasnt my thing. On the plus side, the service was excellent.
We visited Picton in early August 2022. We ate dinner on the patio at Hartleys Tavern. The service was exceptional and the staff was very knowledgeable. I had the seared duck breast and it came with a Kimchi pancake which was exceptional!!! We will definitely eat here again and I would highly recommend!!
By far the best food I ve eaten in PEC
The food here was absolutely delicious and the service is on point. I definitely recommend going especially for a date night; atmosphere is perfect for that
What a fantastic spot to visit! The food, drink and services was all incredible! We had the soufflé, oysters, lobster roll and French fries (seriously best fries I ve ever had) it truly was a culinary experience!
Amazing food and impeccable service. Interesting flavour combinations and fantastic classics.
We had an absolutely fantastic experience at Hartleys Tavern. The food was incredible. My husband got the bison tartare as an appetizer and couldn t stop talking about how that was the best thing he d ever eaten. The whole drive home and rest of the night it was all he could talk about. My duck breast with kimchi pancake was unreal the kimchi pancake was the perfect balance of spicy and savoury and juuust a little sweetness just phenomenal. Neither my husband or myself are drinkers and I was so pleased to see they had a zero-proof cocktail menu. My husband had a Becks near beer which is one of his favourites and I had the hibiscus lemonade which was so delicious. When you aren t a drinker it is so nice to feel included and can have a grown up drink with your meal instead of a cranberry soda it was a really fantastic touch. And of course I couldn t end this review without speaking about the service. Our server Blaine was great he was so involved and would take the time to explain the dishes with precise detail and checked in often enough but not so often you felt you were being interrupted. The whole staff worked so well as a team we never needed anything. Our waters were always topped up, fresh cutlery brought with each course, and if Blaine couldn t get to us someone else was there to offer another drink if we needed. We were so impressed with our experience last night and will definitely be returning in the future.
Absolutely wonderful meal, unique dishes and so delicious! A must stop while visiting Picton Dietary restrictions: They were very accommodating with my gluten allergy.
This restaurant was beyond excellent! By far one of the best meals I ve had in years. We wanted to cancel our reservation for our 2nd night just to eat there again but sadly they weren t open that night. We will definitely come back again to enjoy this restaurant s amazing cuisine.
Service was wonderful - friendly informative. Food was properly portioned and cooked. Beautifully plated. We had prix fixed as it was just before Countylicious.
Had a fabulous evening at Hartley s Tavern. The food was phenomenal! Excellent service, with a cozy relaxed upscale atmosphere. Thank you Jim!
Small and intimate tavern with an well made and eclectic menu. Went for Countylicious and we really enjoyed ourselves. Staff were attentive but not intrusive , quick to refill glasses and answer questions. Food was absolutely delicious, beautifully plated bursting with flavour. Clam chowder was out of this world , smooth and silky , amazing flavour . Robbys Seafood was wonderfully seasoned , everything cooked perfectly. The Duck Duo was tender and elegantly flavoured and was a quite hearty portion. For dessert we enjoyed the Creme Brulee with the flavour of the day being honey and ginger . It was absolutely scrumptious, smooth on the inside and that wonderful crunchy outside , warm throughout with the punch of ginger was really lovely . Extensive wine menu and good selection of local and international drinks. Three courses took about 2 hrs from start to finish so sit back and enjoy the culinary adventure . Due to the size and popularity reservations are a must , especially during the weekend. Patio available during the summer .
What a wonderful meal, every bite! The presentation was beautiful, the atmosphere in the restaurant calming and the staff friendly and knowledgeable. We will be back! Many thanks, Ed and Donna
Luxurious ambiance, farm to table decadent dining, superior service. Where would you love to be on this Friday!! Appreciating Hartley s Tavern more than ever!
I have been to Hartley s a couple of times now. I was never in Picton after 5PM so it took some time for the stars to align to get me in there. I am thankful they did. It was spectacular. I went with my wife, we decided after looking over the menu that it was going to be one of our Apps Nights where we graze the appetizer menu heavily first and in most cases, completely and skip the entrees. The atmosphere is brilliant. Not overdone but dark and cosy, with lots of dark wood and barn board. Toss in lots of little light sources and the effect is dark, cozy and calming. The place just sets you up to take a deep breath and relax. As a filmmaker I could rave about the light all day. i hope I can do a video for them someday LOL OK. Food and beverage. Beer selection is solid with lots of local (Barley Days and Strange Brewing), a few regional (MacKinnon Brothers Brewing) and a couple of far flung standards like Sapporo. The bartenders are all owners most busy nights (Jim and Janine) and they are solid at the craft. The Somm is very capable, especially for varied pallets. The staff are, as most people will recognize who live in Prince Edward County, friendly face to most of us as they have worked at many other establishments. Service is top notch at all times. You all know what I like, attentive without hovering, and knowledgable about the offerings. Honest enough to go ask if they dont. Jared (Jim and Janines son, chef and yes I am going to say it, Food Wizard) runs the kitchen. His approach is daring, flavourful, and he has nailed everything I have tried there. His pates is killer and his take Creme Brule damn near made me cry. The selection of oysters is always top notch. Fresh, and a good mix of compatible varieties to make you slurping rewarding. I wish I lived closer. I could make this place my 5 oclock join in a heartbeat. I will need a few more visits to lock in my feelings. Perhaps 10 or 15 more dinners, an Ill give everyone a final read....LOL
I sooo would
I wish they would treat everyone equally and not deny people of colour their reserved tables. Would not book again.
Nice experience. Dishes are well prepared. The staff gives great attention to customers.
Great steak ok service
This small number of reviews is simply explained by the fact that they are not on the main street, but does not mean that they are not that good, or even better then those. It is a hidden gem of PEC!
The main dishes we tried today were flavorless. We had the duck and rabbit sausage pasta. The waitress was friendly but she was all over the place - needs service training. The decor was nice but the food was subpar. Definitely wont return; especially for the price of $122 for two main dishes and two glasses of wine.
Lovely upscale dining. Great flavours!
Thank you Hartley s for another exquisite meal with a fabulous wine pairing the resto and your team never disappoint and always delight! A County institution, the Hartleys team understand and deliver every nuance of fine dining from sourcing to service. Chef Jerrod s mastery of locally sourced, house-made cuisine is superlative for a young chef (a star on rise!); Janine s sommelier service is always rewarding, with new discoveries and old favourites; from back to front of house, the whole team offers an innovative and refreshing experience with detail and consistency every time. Without question, this is the best dining in the County!
Hartley s Tavern is unquestionably the best restaurant in the County. I am a regular patron! All the members of the Hartley family are involved in the business as they have with restaurants for most of their lives and it shows! Whether it s the the food (outstanding examples include the bison tartare, halibut with coconut curry sauce, and the duck breast) or the cocktails and wine list or the service, there is excellence, quality and consistency throughout. It s not cheap, but few restaurants in the County are these days, and Hartley s returns excellent value for its prices.
Great service, all the staff are very attentive. Cozy atmosphere for a romantic dinner. Everything was delicious, we recommend!
Ive never been so poor treated in my life. Covid reasoning, they asked us to leave our name and number and it was probably gonna be a 2 hour wait. Thats fair its a huge destination spot who can complain? Well we waited 3 hours and went back and asked if we were close, we were told nope you missed your window, even tho we sat out front for 3 hours expecting a call. The hostess was very confrontational so we asked for the manager and after explaining our story we were given seats at the bar. Once our food arrived we were told we could not buy drinks and our desserts would be put in the bag to leave. Ive seriously never been treated like this and never wrote a review..... this was the worse experience Ive ever had at a restaurant. I never even got to eat a bite and they charge me 200 dollars
Absolutely one of the best places to dine anywhere! Not just in the county but anywhere , it s that good !! Very fortunate to have this restaurant in our little town ,keep up the great work Hartleys !
Excellent food and service!!
We had a lovely experience at Hartleys Tarvern. The food was delicious and the service was friendly and professional. The bison tartare nachos were to die for. I would also recommend the lamb philo rolls and duck breast.
First of all, by mistake we showed up on the wrong night (two months in advance of our reservation). The place was sold out, so I was expecting a miserable night. But no!!!! The amazing table captain found a way to make things right and we had a memorable meal at Hartleys after all! So grateful for this. Everything was absolutely delicious oysters, trout, scallop, gem salad and shrimp cocktail. The Chenin Blanc by Chadsey Cairns was a super pick to go with it all, and the lemon dessert with (cherry?) ice cream may have been the best dish of the night! Love this place and hope to return.
We booked a table at Hartley s on friday august 27th without any expectations. It turned out to be a wonderful evening. Very friendly staff, very professional. Inspired chef: delicious food, very tasty and the meat perfectly seared. We will return next time we come to beautiful PEC.
Very professional, friendly service. Couldnt fault the food, all the ingredients tasted so fresh. You can see a lot of care and attention is put into the dishes here
I cant say enough good things about Hartleys! Of all the places my wife and I ate at in Prince Edward County, Hartleys was the best. Their oysters were super fresh (county based). The wine was on the more expensive side, but very, very good. I had lamb two ways (a special for that night - absolutely fantastic), and my wife had the hanger steak (which was too good). I had never had rum baba before, which was described to me as a fancy pancake, and I completely agree. Rum baba may be my new favorite dessert. My wife had the creme brulee, which was perfect. If you splurge at one place in the county, splurge at Hartleys.
An interesting bistro with an attractive menu. Superb terrace well furnished so that the season lasts a long time. Impeccable service. Its worth the detour from the main street where all the other restaurants are.
Very scrumptious starters including the bison Tartare nachos and lamb Philo rolls (Two large spring rolls with ground lamb and two delicious sauces, plum and sour cream type sauce) would go back just to have the lamb rolls and a pint for a snack during the day. Main courses Braised Rabbit Pasta, missed the mark a bit compared to other similar dishes Ive experienced, I personally didnt like the Brocolli in the dish. Seared Duck Breast was very delicious and the confit duck eclair was a nice little bonus to the dish! (Even though its described in the description). Great ambiance and very friendly service. Price point was a little off for me all main dishes are evenly priced at $40 (+2 for the steak.) I dont believe all those dishes ingredients have the same cost to purchase. If you have the bucks to spend DEFINITELY go here you will not be disappointed. Food is amazing despite my critiques! Within top 5 places Ive eaten at in PEC (so far).
Honestly one of the very best meals weve experienced. Flawless. My duck was exceptional.
Fabulous meal. The duck and the venison were standouts but everything was well done. Staff were helpful and professional.
Our server Blaine was so attentive and friendly! the food was phenomenal, the atmosphere was so comfortable. would definitely recommend making a reservation here!
Fantastic wine, food, drinks, and service. Loved this restaurant!
Wow the food is fantastic! Service is excellent too but I can t say enough good things about the food. Just wow! Thank you Hartleys for the wonderful dinner!
Hartleys is the best establishment for people who love to see and be with people who love what they do. Eat a fabulous meal and be treated like royalty. This place is awesome.
One of the best places to eat in Ontario. High-class food and drinks. I would recommend the Halibut cakes, Teriyaki beef, and the creme brulee.
If you want to get excellent service, ambiance and great food, Hartelys Tavern is a place to go. We went here with friends and surprisingly their food is comparable to some high-end restaurants in downtown Toronto. I had fish with curry sauce on a bed of sticky rice and vegetables on the side. Their appetizers are amazing particularly the Yorkshire pudding with shredded lamb. For desserts, the cheesecake with coconut and berry was delicious!
We enjoyed a wonderful meal....hanger steak and duck breast were beautifully prepared. The staff are very knowledgeable about the menu...pleasant and attentive. Hartleys is the perfect place for a romantic dinner after a day of touring the wineries in the County.
Wonderful integration of local ingredients with international cuisine!
Excellent service and awesome 3 course meal options, very reasonably priced. Great oysters and loved their bison tartar nachos, so tasty!
AMAZING food and service!!!
Absolutely amazing experience. Food was so delicious - especially the Bison Tartare and the Venison Striploin. Great service too, will come again
We found ourselves at Hartleys unexpectadely as our original destination was closed due to a power outage. The folks at Hartleys welcomed us with seating at the bar.Everything from the service, apps ,mains and dessert were fantastic.Thank you Hartleys for a wonderful evening.Cheers
Great atmosphere and staff. Good was really well done to.
Best fish and chips Ive had so far in the County. Will definitely be back to try their other selections.
Our favourite place! My boyfriend and I stumbled upon this place last summer on our way home from Sandbanks and absolutely fell in love. The service is great, the staff has remembered us each time weve gone back and are always very friendly. The food is delicious and very affordable, and theres always something new to try. I recommend this place to everyone.
Great Food
Reservations were made for 9:00-9:30PM.We showed up a little earlier then expected so we had ordered a drink at the bar. I have to say the bartender was super knowledgeable and defiantly noticeably passionate about what she does. I was super hesitant about the drink I had ordered but really loved it.... once we were seated the waiter ( I wished I remembered his name) was freaking amazing! His customer service skills were through the roof! He noticed I wasnt to fond of my main course so he took it upon himself to surprise us with complimentary cappuccinos and a peach cobbler...Which can I just say was the best part. The food wasnt 100% to our likings however the service made up for everything.
The food was very delicious, and the staff was incredibly nice! What a lovely experience.
Beautiful evening & dinner enjoyed here this evening. The service was perfect, and elegant. Our water glasses were filled frequently. The servers were both knowledgeable about the menu, and happily answered any questions. While we never expect our cutlery or napkins to be replaced, they were between courses; which is a nice touch. Even our hot sauce was tidied for us... Amazing attention to detail. I fully applaud this. Great wine, beer, and cocktail list. We ordered a few things from the menu (OystersCOysters,K Kimchi Fries, Shrimp Bao, Summer Squash, Fennel Salad, and Seared Duck Breast). All of these things were seasoned nicely. Local, fresh flavour. All of our items came in a timely manner and we never felt like we rushed to complete anything. I should also note that all safety procedures were followed through with poise by everyone, and all signage was concise. Overall, so impressed. I wish I could give a higher rating. Great job Hartleys! You can tell a lot about a restaurant by how much HART is put into the service/food/atmosphere, and this crew knocked it out of the park.
We had numerous appetizers including the seared scallops, mushrooms on toast and the bao. All were exceptionally delicious. Service was courteous and attentive.
Absolutely AWFUL customer service... waitress gave a lot of attitude when she had to explain things. Never mentioned any extra charges for the specials, and when questioned her about it, she became very defensive and blamed us for it. Even my kids agreed she never mentioned any extra pricing. I advise you to take your money and eat somewhere where the service will be up to par. Food was nothing special, overpriced for a flavorless meat. Extremely small portions. I tried the duck, the venison and steak from my family s platters. All the meats were flavorless. Only thing that was average was the sauces. Double thumbs down.
Great atmosphere, great food, great serving staff, even during these unusual times they were extremely courteous, conscientious and professional.....loved it! We will definitely return to Hartleys Tavern in the future.
My boyfriend and I were there on Saturday and I must admit that the food and service were superb. It was my first time and I didnt know what to expect. I was impressed by the quality of the food. We had the prix fix menu. The foie gras was perfectly crispy and well seasoned. For that alone I would go back every day! The scallops of the coquille St-Jacques were succulent. We also had the rabit gnocchi, perfect little pillow of goodness. My boyfriend had the seared duck breast that was perfectly cooked. The desserts were also sublime. We ate too much but it was worth every single bite. I am looking forward to returning. Thank you for such an awesome delectable meal.
The place has a very nice menu/wine list with a good selection of local wines. Everything we ate was delicious. Only comment I have is that the rabbit gnocchis could have used a bit more of a binding sauce to make everything come together but it was still delicious.
An absolute experience. The Baos and the mushroom on toast are something else. Everything cooked to perfection and exquisitely balanced. I would go back to Picton JUST for that amazing restaurant.
One of the top five restaurants Ive been to. Better than most places in Toronto!!
Fantastic food. I had the duck, it was sensational.
Great atmosphere, incredibly friendly staff and delicious food. Highly recommend if you are visiting PEC!
One of the best meals I ever had! Its been two weeks and Im still raving about it! It was definitely worth the wait. The owner was super friendly and she even waited with us and kept us company while we waited for our cab to arrive. Thank you - Karen and Terry (honeymooners)!
Excellent cauliflower schnitzel and very good cocktails. Great little place in downtown Picton. Friendly staff and gender neutral bathrooms. Could use more vegan options.
Great, high-quality farm-to-table food that is not prohibitively expensive. An excellent choice for a nice date night or as a highlight of a trip to PEC. They also offer three-course deals that will save the cash-conscious a little. the scallop appetizer was a highlight that is worth trying, and I also enjoyed the rabbit gnocchi. Their selection of local wines and craft beers was also excellent, although their cocktail list was a little boring. The staff were friendly, accommodating, and very helpful. Overall an excellent dining experience.
My husband I enjoyed a fantastic dinner at this gem of a restaurant in Picton this past Wednesday. Our server who was the owner, was very attentive and provided impeccable service. We were extremely impressed by the dishes created by the talented chef. We shared the mushroom toast as an appetizer and loved this unique dish. My husband was presently surprised by the incredible hanger steak which was very tender and had a spicy/savory chocolate sauce. I enjoyed Bobbys fish which was rainbow trout and quite delicious. For dessert, I enjoyed the decadent chocolate and peanut butter pie, while my husband loved his citrus tart. We agreed that it had been the most memorable meal that wed had in over a year.
Excellent food and service. Had lots of options for drinks and food. Their pumpkin soup was amazing.
Great chef
I bet pubby for what we wanted, but the food was still very good.
We had a great time and dinner. The atmosphere was easy and relaxed. The host was polite. I had the Foie gras and the corn beef slider. Not sure what everyone else had but all said they had a great meal. The server was very nice and professional. The prices where very reasonable for the quality of service and food. We will be back for sure.
FANTASTIC DINING at Hartleys. Three of us went last night and we enjoyed a variety of appetizers, main courses and dessert. The sparkling wine, white & red wine were all tasty. The sparkling wine could have been colder and sometimes it was hard to understand our server. More because of the mask and the restaurant was quite loud. Every guest seemed to enjoy themselves. We will be back regardless. It was our third time.
Stephanie and her colleagues took amazing care of us last night. The fried rabbit was particularly delicious! Thank you for being such great hosts.
Food was very good. Salmon was excellent although whatever they served with it was very salty. Service was timely. Price was rather high. I used to visit when it was a diner and the atmosphere and prices were more in my price range. However, this was a nice adventure.
My husband and I were lucky to be seated without a reservation on a Saturday night a few weeks ago. Our server was fantastic, we enjoyed the ambiance, and our meal was phenomenal. I had the mussels, the rabbit sausage gnocchi, and the Earl Grey creme bruleé (this dessert is made in-house). All of it was delicious and worth the food coma. :)
Just returned from Hartley s with my husband, sister-in-law and her husband and all 4 of us had an exceptional experience - outstanding food and drinks and the service was excellent. A meal that will not be soon forgotten! Thank you!!
We had a terrible experience here. We made a reservation 2 weeks in advance and were seated over an hour after our reservation time. We were told to come half an hour later and when we arrived they asked us to go for a walk and then we still had to wait another 20 minutes at the door. The hostess was very unprofessional and scattered. Once we sat down everything was going really well. The food was okay and we were having a good time. Then we go to order our second bottle of wine and it was the owner of the restaurant that did our wine service and having worked in 5 star hotels myself, I could not believe how unprofessional this was. After serving a tasting to my partner who clearly said the wine was corked, and having broken the cork and not strained the wine so there were bits of cork floating in the glass, she decided to keep pouring the wine for the rest of table to taste. We all said that it had gone bad and didnt appreciate being pressured into keeping this wine. After a few snarky and condescending comments she finally brought us a different bottle that we ordered. At that point we just wanted to pay and get out. The quality of the food and the selection of wine is decent. However, the execution of service and attitude is quite poor.
Great dinner tonight for Countylicious!
I loved every part of this experience!! The service, the food and the ambiance. Went for Countylicious and was not disappointed. The food was made with mostly homegrown ingredients. From the pumpkin soup to the hot sauce and everything in between was made with fresh ingredients. The salmon is butchered in house and is seared to perfection. Definitely my new favourite spot to dine at in Picton.
Great food, great staff. Exceptionally friendly service
Great food. Amazing service. Best restaurant in the county
Made a reservation a month in advance for a group of 10. Called the restaurant ahead of time to let them know we were on our way, and they said they didn t have a table available for us. We spoke to the manager and he did not take responsibility for the mistake. We were so disappointed. Instead, we had to eat at a diner (I had microwaved spaghetti). Though we enjoyed our diner experience, the delay it took to delve into our meals caused us to miss gelato, as the gelato store was now closed. Then we couldn t get a seat at the next bar because it was already full. Thanks Hartley s Tavern!
Thanks for screwing up our reservation then not even apologizing or trying to accommodate us at all
Good service good food
We loved dinner in every way! We chose the 4-course meal and from starter to dessert everything was great! The choices are varied, the menu changes seasonally, the choice of wine is good too. These are hearty portions for the price, so if you choose the 4 course meal, dont eat first!! :) Beef tartare YOU MUST CHOOSE IT! The best tartare Ive eaten to date. The meat melts in your mouth, the seasoning is just perfect. I therefore recommend this restaurant to everyone, which is in no way a tavern, I guarantee it! Nice atmosphere in the restaurant, great service too! THANKS
Great food and just off the strip. The fish n chips were awesome (more fish than batter). Good pricing, and good selection / variety of food. Missed a star because a few beers / menu items were not available & service was good, but not great (server was a touch standoffish to us, but could just be a personal thing). Would go back out recommend to others.
Excellent cuisine, we enjoyed ourselves!
Waitress was lovely. Food was delicious. A bit on the foodie side but really tasty.
The food is to die for.
Amazing dishes and flavours. Very very tiny portions for very large prices. That said, Id definitely go back.
Absolutely delicious!! Excellent service. Would recommend for sure. Had the mushroom toast it was amazing.
To start we had the Rabbit Liver mousse which I didnt love, but everyone else at our table did. We also had the Eggplant Rolltation which I thought was excellent and reminded me of eggplant parm, the broccoli salad which was good but not the most exciting, and the fresh bread which I highly reccommend. We all shared the Venison, Robbys Fish, The Hanger Steak & the Grilled Duck, all our dishes were cooked phenomenally.. like to absolute perfection. My favorite by far was the Hanger Steak, it was to die for, crispy outside, juicy melt in your mouth inside full of flavor. Our server was a young guy, very charming and professional and did a good job putting up with us after a few drinks lol. The restaurant is buzzing all evening long, very popular and trendy place. The owner and chef is in his early 20s which is incredible to me, great job keep it up!!!
Food is always good. Loved the service too!
Awesome food, really good service - perfect date night
An excellent lunch. The service was superior, the food delicious and the menu diverse with a discerning selection of wines. No bubblegum machine yet!
Very nice ambiance and great service, amazing food.
Great food. Very, very small portions. If youre interested in good food that will want you heading for the dinner down the street for extras, do attend.
Wow! Fantastic food, great ambience and excellent service. Exceeded expectations and then some will be back for sure.
The food was great and its a very nice place with genuinely friendly staff.
Food was perfect, service was perfect. Had a loving evening
We really enjoyed our dinner at the bar. All of our food was really delicious and the service was fantastic. Well be back soon!
Great food, service, ambience, pricier than other restaurants in area.
Great food. Countilicious is great
Food was nothing to write home about. Edit: Lol. The response from the management team shows the service level received.
