4824 Johnston Rd, Port Alberni, BC V9Y 6L6, Canada
100% GLUTEN FREE MENU showcasing a diverse range of fish, quality meats, tacos, burgers and bowls. Eat-in or take-out. Fully licensed. Located in an historic church building at the corner of Johnston Road and Elizabeth Street.
Had the halibut fish and chips at Bare Bones, the halibut was light and flakey. Best fish and chips I've ever had, hard to beat. The tartar sauce was great, they put dill in the tartar sauce which gives it a nice flavour. Fries were good, coleslaw was a little watery.
The restaurant is quite busy, without reservation we had to wait a bit before seating. The food is flavorful, though the portions could be more generous. The staff is friendly and attentive.
**Delicious Gluten-Free Delight with Exceptional Service** I recently had the pleasure of dining at this wonderful restaurant, and I must say it exceeded all my expectations. It‘s often challenging to find places that offer not only safe but truly delicious options. This place, however, nailed it! The gluten-free meal I ordered was nothing short of spectacular. The flavors were vibrant, and the dish was prepared with such care and attention to detail that you could tell the chefs really know what they’re doing. It didn’t feel like I was missing out on anything; in fact, it was one of the best meals I’ve had in a long time, gluten-free or not! What made the experience even more memorable was the service. The staff were incredibly friendly and attentive, making sure I felt comfortable and well taken care of throughout the entire meal. They were knowledgeable about the menu and made sure all my dietary needs were met without any hassle. Overall, if you’re looking for a place that offers delicious gluten-free food with a side of exceptional service, this is the spot. I can’t recommend it enough!
This was my second visit to Bare Bones! I absolutely love their salmon. The batter was perfectly thin and crispy! BBQ chicken was okaish.
Great stop on the way to / from Tofino. I had the BBQ ribs which were very good (and a little bit messy). Our server Mackenzie was very good and had a warm and genuine demeanor.
We came to Port Alberni to do some hiking and came to Bare Bones for dinner. It was a great decision and I highly recommend it if you are in the area. It has a cozy, nice casual atmosphere and our server was amazing. She was very knowledgeable about the food and the drink menu and was perfectly attentive. The prices are reasonable and the food is amazing. I tried the cider there and it was the absolute best cider I have ever had. I highly recommend it!
Stopped here after a long hike and left happy. The bowl I got was very good and reallly hit the spot. Our server was very nice as well.. I think my only complaint with this place is we all found it quite cold. Regardless, I would definitely go back here to try the bowl again.
Definitely some of the best fried fish I’ve had! The batter was nice and crispy but light and not greasy! Had the halibut so I knew it was going to be a little pricier, but so worth it! Service was great, was the first person in at lunch time today. All around would definitely go back if I was in Port Alberni again!
Sooo good
We went for dinner and Unfortunately the fish was not done well at all. My brother in law and I both had the cod fish and chips - it was terrible. The coating for the fish and chips was hard and greasy. My sister in law had the fish tacos and was ill during the night. Im not sure if the oil was bad but something definitely wasnt right. As an out of town visitor, I can honestly say that I probably wont be back again. I probably should have sent it back right from the get go but my husband told me to just eat the fish (minus the batter). Its too bad since this place came highly recommended
Amazing food! Friendly service and nice atmosphere
Best meal in years!! Absolutely on my list of places to go...top of the list!! Great service....thanks for a delightful time!
Great fish and chips, friendly service
Great food, great service and lovely decor. The fish tacos were delicious and a very generous portion, and the seafood chowder was perfect comfort food.
Awesome thank you guys for the help on a 2021 Chevy Malibu it s running awesome. Thank you so much again.
We enjoyed the homemade fish and chips. The fish and scarcity were excellent. The dessert was also very good. The staff was very friendly too.
Mainlanders driving from Tofino to Duke Point saw this restaurant. We had the beef tacos and one piece halibut and chips. The food was exceptional. The staff equally exceptional. We are recommending an eating experience here. Cheers and thank you for a geat lunch.
Really happy with the gluten free food. THANKS Dietary restrictions: Everything is gluten free
Great food and fast service. Enjoyed the fish and chips.
Really nice food and very friendly staff.
Dietary restrictions: Gluten free menu is a dream for anyone intolerant Food
We had our dinner when we visited Port Alberni. I selected this restaurant by looking for its reviews. But I am very disappointed with the selection of food. There are very few vegetarian dishes. The cleaningness is also an issue. Mosquitoes were flying. I will not visit there .
Deeeeelish! You gotta eat here!
Great food!! Quick service. Friendly staff.
My husband had the ribs and I had the fish and chips (salmon). The food was very tasty, the service was very attentive and the atmosphere on the heated terrace is very pleasant even when the weather is not so good.
Whaaat??! Gluten free battered fish?? Indeed! Super delicious entirely gluten free menu, so good, in fact, that you d be hard-pressed to tell the difference from traditional batters. Crisp, without the doughy texture that can often accompany deep fried fish. We ordered the seafood platter for two and there was so much food! Salad, tacos, prawns, battered salmon and cod, great fries. Just yum all around. Make sure you order the lavender lemon cake for dessert - a lovely lemony pound cake (gluten free!!!) with berry compote and whipped cream. Good food, good service, convenient location on the main street through PA. Definitely will stop here again. Also served Merridale s Jalisco cider, my favourite. Delish!
Apparently under new ownership and its way better food and menu choices than when we were here about 5 years ago. All GF too, and you wouldnt know it! Dietary restrictions: GF
The food was okay but left something to be desired. There were no flavours that stood out, everything seemed muted. I expected more freshness
My wife and I stopped here on our way to and from Tofino. She was thrilled the entire menu was gluten free. She was able to have fish and chips, which isnt usually an option. The service was good and the vibe was good. Its a nice place to stop by for gluten free people.
Very good restaurant! All 4 of us had 1 slice of salmon fish & chips and it was plenty enough! The patio is pleasant and not too noisy!
Amazing. Ate here 3 times in a week and I am a sensitive coeliac. Honestly food is amazing and 100% gluten free. Thank you guys!! Dietary restrictions: Amazing for Coeliac.
Good but spendy
Everything was Fantastic. !!
Great food and GF fish n chips! Came here with friends who were locals. To my delight, the entire restaurant was all gluten free, including fish n chips--which is a treat I rarely get to eat. The cod fish n chips were SO good! I wish I had ordered 3 pieces instead of 2. Our servers were a delight and super friendly and helpful. BTW, my non-gluten avoiding friends said it was excellent also! Dietary restrictions: The entire restaurant is gluten free and delicious!
The restaurant itself was clean and aesthetic - the food and service were meh .
Wow, amazing gluten free menu. Got salmon and chips on Sept. 18, it was delicious. Dietary restrictions: Gluten free
Took an hour and a half to get our food. Other people sat down orderd ate and left before we got our food
Not very many places are 100% gluten free! It is either pretty empty or so full the staff is run off their feet. No way to predict.
Halibut was so good. Fish was butter and fresh. Pay the extra couple bucks and get the halibut
Wahoo! Entire menu is GLUTEN free ! Awesome ! Crisp fish and chips and gravy! Food
Awesome ribs!!!
Fish and chips 10/10 love the dips too!! Fried chicken 8/10 Gravy 10/10 Food : 4/5
Great food, and its all gluten free, even burgers and the deep fried stuff.
Picked up tonight simple order. They got it wrong, no tartar sauce no coleslaw no garlic aoili for parmesan fries!!Called left a message.....no response. For $50.40 not happy not impressed will not order or anything again
We ate well! The salmon chowder, fish and chip, salmon bowl, brisket were delicious! Excellent service, nice portions and a warm atmosphere.
Food was great-The breading of the fried fish was not that thick and it was tasty! The service took long (maybe they are short staff).
a fish & chips dream for everyone...especially for gluten-free people, thank you!! stop there if you can and are hungry!!
Dietary restrictions: The entire menu is gluten free. But the food tastes great. Food
Atrocious service, waited over an hour for a soup
When we arrived at the end of the night, they where so busy they ran out of fries, but the waitress was so amazing we had no issue with anything! She knows who she is and deserves a big raise!
We arrived late on Canada Day. Last table served on a day when almost every other restaurant in town was closed. Our server Erin was absolutely fabulous. Despite the kitchen understandably being out of a few things she handle the situation amazingly. Even the wait that she warned us about was far less and she turned a possibly uncomfortable or disappointing experience into a truly memorable one. Because of Erin we will definitely be back again. (Note: the other staff were pretty amazing as well!!)
We had a great experience. Fish and chips were Super. Dietary restrictions: Gluten free Food : 5/5 |
The Carribbean Chicken bowl was absolutely delicious. The staff were very friendly and the service was great. Best meal I have eaten on Vancouver Island.
Amazing food, quick and friendly service and an amazing array of delicious food and drink items. Every member of my hard to please family heartily enjoys it every time we go! Dietary restrictions: Amazingly 100% gluten free, and very sensitive to other allergies/preferences
A surprise were the fried oysters, not recommended, as well as the cauliflower tacos, the flavor was good, but too much oil in everything, otherwise good presentation.
Came for lunch to get fish and chips, food was great but the grumpy old server ruined my experience, took 10-15 just for some water and when my food arrived the plates where basically dropped on the table to where she left and didnt ask us if there was anything else we needed, Ive been for dinner a few times and service was amazing but today was a step down from my past experiences
Taste good, comfortable, clean. You can definitely enjoy it. It is worth visiting and trying some food. Food
Service and location were great. Food was a miss on that visit. Daily special tacos were very bland. Not sure if that is the norm with the cajin receipe or if it was a rough day.
nice place to make a stop for lunch or dinner. i and my wife were travelling to Tofino and we made a stop to try their delicious fish tacos nd Fish and chips. Yea it was delicious. feel free to try.
I RARELY give 5 stars to any place, the service was OK, a little too inattentive but the food made up for it!!! Definitely in the top 5 fish & chip shops Ive ever been to!! One in Kelowna but the rest are in the UK. So if you cant fly to the UK for fish and chips this is probably your best bet! Haha Batter was cooked just right, the fish was tender and flaky plus I even enjoyed the fries The bounty bomb was pretty sweet Lemonade super tasty! Try this place out 2 yrs later more pics and its still very tasty, almost as good as the first time! : )
Grace is the best server !!
This is where I take my kid to celebrate. She loves their brisket and fries most. I also love going with friends. Its a comfortable place and not so loud you cant have a conversation. Finally, I struggle with chronic pain. Their seats dont make it worse, and I never worry about breaking them or falling.
We stopped here for lunch on our way to Tofino. A quaint spot with some unique bbq items along with seafood choices. We enjoyed our food.
I ate lunch here during their happy hour. I had the brisket sandwich which was mediocre. The meat was a bit dry with a small amount of barbeque sauce added on top. Cheese was not melted. The fries were good, well seasoned. The house salad was drowned out with the vinegar based dressing. Service was great, and the atmosphere was nice. Overall, I believe the food is largely overpriced for the delivery of the product.
We visit this place two or three times few years ago and was not impressed by the atmosphere and the food then stop go to this place for good.... but at this time we saw some changes outside of the business and decided to give a try cause we heard its under the new ownership.... We was very pleasantly surprise how good this place is now! The fish and chips was great! We definitely will be go back for such a nice food!!! We hope we will not be disappointed for our next visits... Thank you!
Gluten Free and Celiac safe! Very tasty options and healthy options too. Loved it so much we adapted our trip in the area to come a second time..
The food was great! I ordered oysters and halibut fish & chips, which is very delicious. My server was friendly and on point from start to finish! I will be back soon!
Excellent place for traditional fish and chips. I had cod and my wife had halibut. Thick layer of deep fried batter, but very good portion of fish in each piece. Servers were extremely friendly and helpful. Atmosphere was wonderful, everyone around us seems to be happy as well. We have been several times and will be back again
Great but seemed a bit pricey
Recipe changed and their online ordering system never works but amazing place!
Title: Bare Bones Fish House & Smokery - A Seafood Haven in Port Alberni Located at 4824 Johnston Rd in Port Alberni, BC, Bare Bones Fish House & Smokery offers a seafood experience worth savoring. The food at Bare Bones earns a solid 9 out of 10. While the flavors are exceptional and leave taste buds tingling with delight, some dishes, particularly the fish fry, leaned a tad towards the oily side. However, this minor setback is overshadowed by the overall fantastic taste of the dishes. Service at Bare Bones is impeccable, earning a perfect 10 out of 10. The staff are attentive, friendly, and ensure that every guest feels welcomed and well taken care of. In terms of pricing, Bare Bones earns top marks with a perfect 10 out of 10. The portions are generous, and the prices are reasonable, offering great value for money. One of the perks of dining at Bare Bones is the ample parking available, making it convenient for guests to enjoy their meal without worrying about finding a spot. Overall, Bare Bones Fish House & Smokery is a must-visit for seafood lovers in Port Alberni, offering delicious food, excellent service, and great value for money.
I have never had such a bad experience in my life. We waited around half an hour to place our order, and it took almost another hour for the food to be ready. Due to this delay, we missed our ferry. The worst part was the customer service. They served the food without any plates and displayed a very racist attitude, not even acknowledging our presence. After finishing our meal, they didnt bring us the bill, claiming they were busy, so we had to go to the counter to pay. I strongly advise anyone who is not Canadian to avoid this place. I would not recommend it to anyone, and the food was below standard.
Visiting from Newfoundland, you would be hard-pressed to find better halibut and chips or seafood chowder anywhere! Fries were hot and fresh and the service on point! This meal was on par with the excellent cod from Happy Adventure Inn in Newfoundland.
Went to have fish and chips, waitress forgot multiple things from out order. The slaw had hardly any dressing on it, the tartar sauce was bland. One good piece of fish and one rather dry pice. The Cesar had no garnish and was lacking some other components. Nice atmosphere and nice seating area on patio. Fries are good.
Always reliable. Good food and good service. Parking: Diagonal parking on street outside door, parallel parking on Johnson. Might be some on the back side as well. Kid-friendliness: Tables of various sizes, casual atmosphere. Also do takeout. Wheelchair accessibility: There is a ramp up to the door. Johnson might be the better place to park because tbr angled parking has a curb.
Amazing fish & chips. The batter was crispy and the fish was moist. Service was overwhelmed with a full restaurant and we felt ignored from the moment we stepped into the restaurant. Not sure if it s because we re not locals. Food : 5/5
The BBQ platter was a bit lackluster. Definitely was NOT a fan of the weird corn on the plate. Found the brisket fairly overcooked. The coleslaw was very bland. Also not a fan of the server asking what we wanted to leave as a tip rather than just giving us our change and letting us decide (we were paying with cash).
Great food ,great service
Waitress was informative and friendly Dietary restrictions: Im lactose intolerant and its hard to find these kind of dishes without dairy Food : 5/5 |
Everything was very good!
Very interesting setting and a delicious meal. I got the crispy halibut poke bowl. While the rice seemed odd as it was room temperature, the overall balance of unique flavors really worked. Loved the seaweed sheets and crispy halibut. Everyone in town recommended we go there for dinner and Im glad we did! Would definitely go there again.
Cute location a refurbished church. Very good food and service. Highly recommend.
My husband and I enjoyed a meal at Bate Bones on our trip through Port. It was quick, hearty and full of excellent flavours. The service was fast and friendly. We would definitely go back again.
Delicious!!! Love that it was gluten free!!
What an amazing menu! having an entire gluten free menu to order from was incredible! The atmosphere and dining experience was lovely and welcoming, the staff were helpful, knowledgeable and accommodating to our questions. We will definitely be back!!
Excellent pacific halibut fish and chips, great presentation and quality food. Highly recommend this place.
Great service and fantastic flavor of foods. Dietary restrictions: All gluten free options. Parking: Easy to park. Tons of street parking Kid-friendliness: Very kid friendly
The antique feel of the original church brings peace to your mind. The signature dish, fish and chips, is excellent. I also recommend the seafood set plate.
Had a great lunch. The Halibut Fish And Chips are some of the best Ive ever had. Will visit again next time I am in town. Unique atmosphere.
This place was really good under the original owners serving just fish and chips. Now they are trying more variety, none of which is particularly good. The service was slow and not very professional. Great pity.
Fresh, quick, excellent quality and safely gluten free
Delicious food and drinks, good sized portions and great service!!!
Fantastic delicious food and friendly fast service. We stop in every time we come through town. The fish tacos, fish and chips, lobster bisque, clam chowder and drinks have been excellent.
very disappointed
Love their salmon burger and salad! Also totally gluten-free menu - awesome!!
The Brisket with Yorkshire Pudding was beyond amazing! We also had a plate of Brisket. The portions are so generous that my starving son was full and couldnt finish it! I enjoyed the flavourful garlic sauce which accompanied the garlic parmesan fries. The Lobster Bisque had delicious chunks of fresh lobster in it. We will be returning!
Outstanding food and wait staff that make you feel like a welcome regular even if its your first time. We went on Valentines Day, and it was EXTREEMELY busy, but we didnt have to wait much longer than usual to be served, and the food was served promptly, hot and delicious. Dietary restrictions: The only place in town, and one of the very few I know of anywhere that can claim to be 100% gluten free
The building was neat, the food was smelling good but we cannot tell you if it tasted good or not as we stood in the front entrance for 15 or so minutes and didn t even get so much as eye contact from the staff let alone a seat. Ended up walking out hungry with nothing at all. Not ideal. Tried to respond to your reach out but the email bounced back saying your address was unavailable.
Great food and service. Brisket, chicken, halibut and cauliflower bites were a hit. Id buy a jug of that Chimichurri! French fries were cooked to perfection. Weird bun/biscuit/scone thingy that the salmon came on wasnt a winner.
I went to lunch here and it was not a good experience. The service was good enough however I got the chicken burger and the chicken was questionably cooked, the sauce was salty and not good flavour, and the bun was dry and unappetizing. The Parm fries were good, but the coffee was burnt tasting. It was also super cold and drafty in the building which made it an even less enjoyable experience overall. Wish I could review this better. I will say, my friend had fish and chips and he said they were good, so maybe just dont order anything else if you go.
The fish batter was too oily, so I had to remove the batter it to get to the fish.
Had the fish and chips was really good service was good too
Excellent fish and chips!! We were super happy with our dinner choice. Took it to go. As a celiac I really appreciate the gluten free status of the kitchen and all the menu options. Ill have to come back to try more! Dietary restrictions: 100% Gluten Free
Dropped in on our way to Tofino and enjoyed this delicious bowl of cod, sticky rice, kale and carrots. Wish we could have tried more!
Stopped here on our way to Tofino after having noticed it on Instagram over a year ago. It was worth the wait. The food is absolutely amazing and my sister, who is celiac, felt comfortable with the menu and was able to eat without being worried as it is 100% gluten-free. We loved it so much that we made a point of stopping again on our way back. The cold smoked tiger prawns are to die for. I m sure we must have tried everything on that menu and loved it all!!!! An absolute Must-Try on your list of places to eat. Already dreaming of our next time
No halibut on the menu anymore. Sad.
Driving through town thought we would give this place a try. We like to try different restaurants when we go through here. Facilities are nice, cool, chill vibe, and the service is great. I do not recommend the so-called smoked chicken wigns. I dont know how they cooked the wings, but to me, it seemed they boiled them. They do not appear to be smoked in a smoke house or bbq, they literally look like they are boiled. Chicken wigns are not a hard thing to cook properly, it is usually a safe thing to order, but clearly that is not the case. We had fish and chips, they were really good, highly recommend the fish and chips, as for anything so called smoked order at your own risk. I will probably not return. Do your self a favor and google smoked chicken wings. They do not look like that. Maybe their secret is liquid smoke....
Good service, great food!
Really enjoyed the halibut and chips. Stop by enjoy the food , great service, friendly staff
Several years ago I ate a fish and chips meal at Bare Bones. Meal and service was excellent. I decided to go back today May 16/23, despite being told of ownership change. I was completely disappointed with the undercooked batter on the cod, which was very unappealing. The meal was served on a glorified baking tray partially lined with paper which became soggy. Waitress after delivering the meal did not return until I asked for the bill. She said they were short staffed. I never did see the owner walking about.
Ok, this place is a winner. If you have the people, share the platters. I rarely say this but beginning to end was excellent. This is a must when in town. We ate everything and only the coleslaw was available to take a photo!
Ordered the 2 piece cod and chips, tasty but disappointing portion size. Fish was MAYBE 3 oz each but should be 5+ (industry standard). For the price ($22 + taxes) too much $$ for the portion size. Compare Wildside/Surfside grill in Tofino (far superior product IMO), for $19 + taxes you get 2 x 5-8 oz cod each! See photos for comparisons (first photo is Bare Bones). BB, please either reduce price of this or up portion size to reflect your competition. Thank you.
I don t usually post reviews however, I had high expectations for this restaurant, but unfortunately, the experience was extremely disappointing. The food was terrible - overcooked, under-seasoned, and just plain unappetizing. The fish batter was not crispy as was advertised and it was extremely greasy, my wife had to remove the batter to make the fish somewhat edible. The prices were exorbitant, and I expected much better quality for the money. To make matters worse, the customer service was equally bad. The staff seemed disinterested in serving us, and it was difficult to get their attention even when we needed something. We were left waiting for long periods of time, and when we did receive our food it was cold and unappetizing. Overall, I would not recommend this restaurant. The combination of awful food and bad customer service makes it a poor value for the high prices charged. I will not be returning. P.S. the pop was also flat, as if it had been left out for a few hours prior to serving.
Fun fish shack. We had the bbq ribs, halibut and chips, cod bites, fennel fish chowder and pork belly tacos with slaw. Every item was great. Portions are big!
A little under staffed and a little over priced but what can you expect on the island. Great food great drinks!
Bare Bones Fish House & Smokery in Port Alberni, BC is a fabulously scrumptious, totally gluten free restaurant! The food is fresh and great tasting, the atmosphere is friendly and warm and the service is prompt and professional even when really busy. The food is excellent, perfectly seasoned, freshly prepared and a delight for all gluten sensitive and Celiacs who can eat anything on the menu without fear of being impacted by gluten. What a relief! But the best news is that the food tastes great to everyone! There were a lot of very happy people eating in the restaurant when we visited! Visit soon this is soooo good! Vegetarian options: Best veggie burger I have ever tasted!!! Dietary restrictions: COMPLETELY GLUTEN FREE!
Great service. Very happy with the service. Quiet with no blaring music. Much appreciated.
Really excellent fish and chips. Loved it
$45 bbq platter basically the same size as a single portion. When you ask for a platter price you should get a platter.
Flavor in every layer! I had the fish tacos, and each of the layers of topings added depth and dimension to a very satisfying meal
Unreal food and good service! Would recommend
I have eaten many times at this Port Alberni restaurant in the past with the most delicious fish and chips, Must be under new management. Friendly, helpful staff but the worst fish and chips I have ever had . The batter was awful.. The fish was not the freshest either. We ate a few bites and threw the fish out. So disappointing and will not return. June 30, 2023
The fish n chips and fish tacos were both fantastic! The batter was light and crispy, homemade tartar was amazing and the fish was fresh. The fries were soggy and a little disappointing but overall I d still rate the food 5 stars. The service was lacking but not enough to drop the overall rating below a 4 star. Unfortunately the restaurant felt a bit grimey judging from the cleanliness of the high chairs, floors and bathrooms.
Food !!! AWESOME !!!!!! Staff are nice too !
Had take out, was good quality. Maybe a little shy on fish sizes. Really good chowder. Food : 4/5
Was driving through Port Alberni 07-18-23, and wanted to have something to eat. Drove for 14hrs straight, making sammy s, just wanted to sit down somewhere, and eat some good island food. After seeing the reviews for this restaurant, I decided to go there. I walked in the door, a server looked me up and down, then walked away. The typical mean girl behaviour was alluding. I wasn t sure if it was self seating, as I didn t want to just barge in. So I asked politely if it was self seating; she looked at me with frustration, didn t say a word to me and pointed at a table. I was stunned at first. I told her that if I was a bother, I ll go somewhere else. I didn t mean to upset or bother her. I followed her to a table, sat down and felt extremely uncomfortable. After waiting for 15 minutes for her to return, I went to use the washroom. While in the washroom, I heard the server talking to another patron just outside the washroom door, did she finally leave? I walked out of the washroom, the patron looked surprised to see me, the server realized that I heard her. I walked out without saying a word. I went to subway next door. Two servers were working, that I was able to see. It wasn t very busy in the restaurant. I don t know either of these women. I don t know why that particular server behaved the way she did. Mean girl attitudes don t belong in the service industry.
Servers are obviously overwhelmed. Please fix the AC so they have an easier time!
Chef is superb, well maintained clean and food was great.
Great food, smoked shrimps were wonderful!
Excellent meals. The pork belly bowl is just fantastic! Great surprise!
An interesting little place in an old church. The service was friendly and attentive. We ordered 2 pieces of fish. The tartar sauce was amazing. The coleslaw had a pleasant fruit taste to it. The fish has felt like a good portion. We all ordered the garlic fries. The garlic aioli was very good. I felt the portion of fries was a little small for the amount that we paid for the dish. All in all it was a very good meal and would definitely come back for more.
food, super fresh Parking: in the neighborhood, in front of the house, sufficient
FINALLY..calamari done right!! highly recommend. We also had the 2 piece halibut and have to say best fish and chips we have had in Port Alberni..moved here from GTA...and are impressed with this restaurant thus far :) Friendly, professional wait staff..clean establishment, kudos the cooks..great team made for an excellent experience and new return customers.
Fantastic food, full gluten free menu and gluten free kitchen.
Very yummy. Really enjoyed it. Super good food, and would totally recommend. I really enjoy it there. Would totally go back. Have been going there for years now. Parking: There is some street parking around it, and it can be sometimes difficult, but that is the only concern. Kid-friendliness: Good place to take your kids. Nothing wrong for kids goes there. Wheelchair accessibility: Easy to get inside. Nothing wrong with wheelchairs getting stuck. There is even a ramp to go up to.
Wow, the food here is fantastic. Perfectly textured, and nice flavours. The service was friendly and the restaurant was pleasant.
Visiting from Ontario! Amazing food and service! Would recommend this place to anyone looking for great fish and chips.
Well I cant start to say how awesome this place is ! the food and service was insane ! my out of town guests were very happy ! busy busy so reserve lol....best meal I have had for the money in a long long time the calamari is the best ever and big !!!! Good job to the ladies serving !!!
I didn t believe the previous reviews that said everything is gluten free, but it s true! Delicious salads, fish and chips.
We had a party of 7 and were easily and quickly accommodated. Our server was busy, but regardless, did an amazing job. The batter on the fish was light and delicious. I would definitely go back!!!
Delicious, creative side dishes that are perfect complements to flavorful smoked meats.
Incredible place. We stopped here on our way home from Tofino and we were so impressed. The fish and chips were amazing, the staff was great, the music was fantastic.
Delicious!!!
Service was friendly. We got thier seafood platter, and it was fantastic. Patio could definitely use some fans, as was warm, humid with no air movement.
Great room, awesome staff & delicious eats. We will be back!
Huge servings, and great service
We ordered salmon fish and chips it didn t taste like real salmon. We did not enjoy the food that much!
Amazing GF food. Friendly, high quality and delicious food. Highly recommend!
Terrible, my family got very sick after eating the basic fish & chips. Definitely felt like food poisoning and was awful to watch my 1 year old go through.
Only come up to alberni a few times a year this used to be my favorite place. I didnt know it has new owners was in a rush to get back to mainland. Portion size was a absolute joke. How can you call that a 2pc? Idk what doing differently but it did not taste the same as I remember. With pop and tip was about 30. Be going to the clam from now on to keep me full for getting back to tri cities
Were out of towners, and we enjoyed our food and the service. The atmosphere was basic.
We are regulars to this establishment and spend a great deal of money here. I have to say the last time we were here will be our last time.. We came here with a group of ten people and when the bill came they decided to add a $10 tip per couple and said it was mandatory that we pay it. After speaking with a lawyer friend he suggested that this was in fact not legal. I think these greedy tatics will backfire. We are now searching for a new fish and chip place, our group may even drive to Parksville.
If you are out of salmon for the seafood platter, dont charge more for regular fish, smoked prawns frozen, cauliflower tacos? Fruit flies everywhere and in our wine... Wont be back. Food : 2/5
All around amazing. Worth the drive. Service with a smile. Food was amazing. And the best part, it was all gluten free! Score!
If you are going through Port Alberni be sure to get some fish and chips from Bare Bones!!! You won t regret it .
Although I personally did not watch much but my relatives enjoyed their fish n chips. They commented on how much food they had
Very fresh fish and chips. Parking: Location is great and just beside highway No. 4 Food : 5/5 |
The portions are quite large but food very much ok. Some dishes are very plane or have very bad taste. Overall I d say if everything else is closed - this is the place that ll make you full but otherwise I wouldn t come back
Both seafood and BBQ platters was amazing! 10/10
Sunday October 1. Diner. Took over 10 minutes (maybe closer to 15) to be seated with only one (larger) table in front of us. Waited a while to have anyone come and take our order. She didnt ask if we wanted drinks or anything. Another person drops off the food. The ribs were NOT hot. No one ever asks if we want refills on drinks. No one ever refills drinks. No one asks if we want dessert. We have to ask for the bill (because again no one was checking on us) she said it would be a while. When she finally comes with the bill she says shes the only waitress and they are short staffed and that because some other place was closed they were busier. I do NOT feel that she deserved any tip at all, but I could not stiff the kitchen staff. I do NOT feel that we got ANY service. While the (sockeye?) salmon was plentiful, and the ribs were tasty (but again were not hot), and the cauliflower bowl was tasty, the service was horrible. It used to be my favourite place to go while in Port, but I strongly suggest people stay away until they get things back to the way they used to be.
Really good fish & chips and seafood.
Thank you so much for being a designated Gluten Free restaurant! Your food is always delicious!
We went to Bare Bones Fish House because we were in the area. We were in the mood for fish and chips. Check out their menu, not just a fish & chips restaurant. Jaime was our server, she wasnt just polite & congenital she was also respectful & accommodating in making suggestions. Hibby ordered the salmon fish & chips. It came with some tasty fries, a yummy coleslaw. I ordered the Kale Caesar salad with a chicken breast for the protein. The salad was plate sized, and it had a bit too much dressing that was overpowering. I asked Jaime for some fries to tame the taste. She returned with some delicious fries and also let us know that she took the salad off our bill( I wasnt expecting this!). Her service was great. The atmosphere is electric in an old church building , with real moss grown on boards in their window spaces. Cozy atmosphere that was filled with people by the time we left. Vegetarian options: Kale salad is filling. Kid-friendliness: A family with a toddler sat at the next table. The washroom has a change table in the room. Wheelchair accessibility: There are a few stairs to get into the restaurant, didnt see a ramp but with help from a friend or family member a wheelchair person might be able to inside.
EDIT: not sure what happened to the customer services skills here. One girl in particular is SUPER rude and doesn t know how to answer the phone properly. Incorrect orders and terrible customer service. Food here is awesome. Some different choices that we need here in town. Lots of Korean inspired flavours. Love the church style on the inside. Services is very friendly and fast. Cocktails are delish. Hubs had the 2 piece cod and chips and I had the fried chicken sandwich. Both were excellent! Also really enjoyed the fried cauliflower :)
Would have got five stars if it had a lovely view
