This is a great authentic Japanese restaurant in Poco, a hidden gem! We here and sampled the menu, the special chiraishi don is excellent, along with the softshell friend crab. It's hard to find good authentic Japanese places these days, will definitely be back!
It is a truly hidden gem in Poco. The sushi is authentic and not run of the mill kind. Service is fast, and the place is clean.
very good restaurant clean modern you fill your in Japan. I really like it. Highly recommended gets service little bit expensive But worth it everything fresh I will be back
Very nice Japanese family restaurant operated by an old couple. Very fresh sashimi and good tempura.
Authentic Japanese food and great service. Love their Super Chirashi!
Heard lots of great comment about this hidden sushi restaurant. Finally have a chance to check it out. We had high expectations from the sushi bar which definitely did not disappoint us. All the fish were so so FRESH and tasty 🤤. Which goes well with good sake. This sushi restaurant carries wide range of Japanese beer and Sake. Read some comment regarding not able to book a table. I reserved my table by sending text msg. Contact no can be find in their website.
Great selection of nigiri and sashimi. The uni and sweet prawn were my favorite among the other great dishes. Sockeye salmon sashimi also never disappoints
Absolute gem! Love this authentic Japanese family run sushi restaurant. My friends and I have eaten sushi of all quality and price points from Asia and North America and this place does not disappoint. Their pricing is super on the low end but their quality and selection is amazing. They get their fish fresh from Japan and their 10pc nigiri omakase is beyond amazing at only $42!! You can get a similar deluxe nigiri set from Octopus garden at $80 but this place totally takes it at value! This place is in a quiet place in Coquitlam but totally worth the drive from downtown Vancouver. Highly recommend this place!!! Pro tip: when ordering the spot prawn, always ask for the head to be deep fried. It’s delicious!!!
Lovely family owned restaurant. Food is fresh and delicious.
We went tonight without reservations since it s our first time here. We were looking forward to it. We arrived early at 5pm. The lady had this attitude saying they are full and we must have a reservation, which is ok. Then we decided to do take outs. My 3 years old needs to go to a washroom and she gave us an attitude like you didn t eat here you can t use the washroom. But my wife took her anyways. The experience was horrible and we won t be back again
A very special Japanese-owned kitchen. The best sushi in the lower mainland (seriously) and worth the trip from Vancouver. Amazing family team who offer Omakase & fresh fish flown from Japan.
As a Japanese native, I can confidently say that this is the best sushi spot in town. In fact, I havent found a better sushi restaurant anywhere in BC. Reservations are required, as its run by a single chef guy, but its always worth the effort.
Ive been going here since i was 2 or 3 and the owners are very nice and freindly
Fresh and delicious!!! So good!
Our fav sushi place in Vancouver.
Authentic Japanese restaurant. Fresh sushi and pleasant atmosphere. Highly recommend if you want to try authentic food.
Impossible to make reservations. I have called countless times during their open hours and it gets sent to voice mail. I have also driven there twice to be turned away
Amazing sashimi, asari miso, and soft shell crab roll. This is such a gem. A must visit!
Still the best Sushi in the Tri Cities! Book ahead though
Real fresh
Enjoyed the down-to-earth authentic sushi meal served by a Japanese couple. All the seafood tasted fresh and meticulously prepared. Make sure you go for the special dinner (Wed,Thu,Sun only) which includes a mini chirashi, 4 pcs aburi saba, and a clam miso soup - all for only $25! This was not on the regular menu so Im guessing it could change. Portion was generous. I would definitely come back.
Food is always great. Seasonally available fresh seafood selection and imported selection of beers and sakis. Family owned and operated. Closest to authentic Japanese as you can get in the Tri-cities. Not a flashy place but the passion shows up in the sushi and sashimi presentation. A bit pricey and the food takes a while to come out but if youre not in a hurry, its worth the wait.
Authentic sushi place operated by Japanese. The quality of sashimi and nigiris is very high and its certainly worth a visit if you are looking for a more refined sushi experience. They have a lot more choices of fish (e.g. Aji) as well that you probably wont find in other places.
I have tried dozens upon dozens of sushi restaurants throughout the lower mainland, and this place is as simple and authentic as it gets. For people that can really appreciate fresh, authentically prepared nigiri and can taste the difference in quality - this place is for you.
Good quality and the service was lovely. Definitely going back again
This is a compliment but it feels very hole in the wall hidden gem vibes. I had the nigiri and it was all very well prepared and tasty.
Top notch!
This gem is tucked beside SaveOn. Wouldnt have seen it if not for Google Maps. The generous portions and the freshness of the raw fish are worth every penny spent.
If youre seeking an authentic sushi place with the freshest and softest fish, this is a great spot! Their Deluxe Nigiri set was an amazing gastronomic experience and was worth every dollar.
Best sushi in poco but don t tell anyone
Delicious, awesome nigiri Never disappointed with their food, especially sashimi and sushi We had the omakase nigiri, my first time try sakura ebi and hotaru ika nigiri One of my personal favourite is negitoro cone.
delicious nigiri- one of the best I ve eaten. Rice and wasabi are very tasty. Homemade tamago is very good. Udon was very chewy. Lovely hidden gem.
Unfriendly service! waited for longtime but the food is good!
Great authentic sushi place
If i could give this place a 6 star, i would have. We ordered deluxe sashimi, 4 bluefin tuna supertoro sushis, 2 madai sushis, 2 kinmedai sushis, and 2 negitoro temakis. The deluxe sashimis were comparable to what I had in Osaka, especially the ika and hotate. The bluefin tuna supertoro sushis were out of this world. Fatty, complex, and super delicious. The negitoro temaki was the best I have ever had , even compared to the ones I had in Osaka, Kyoto, and Awaji Island. Apparently the chef added bluefin tuna supertoro inside the negitoro temaki. Definitely unforgetable experience, especially with Hugos exceptional service. I wonder if we have another hidden gem like this in Greater Vancouver!
Simply the best.
Very local.
High quality sushi in a small family owned restaurant tucked away in Coquitlam. Definitely worth a try.
Every time we order from here we have the most excellence service, friendly demeanor and the food is fantastic. I would recommend this place to any of my friends or family. Especially during these times where business need the most support.
The food is always amazing. I pre-order the day before so we dont overwhelm the owner-operator/husband-wife team.
Are you a picky eater? So am I! Do you enjoy amazing sushi? So do I! Have you tried sushi bar shyun? Why not?
In one word AWESOME.
One of the best in the lower mainland! Been coming here for years, even to the old location which was in a dingy alley where you thought you might get mugged, but it was worth it! The owners are so lovely, she remembers what I order everytime even if I havent been there in a while. So thoughtful! This is a must try if you want authentic, delicious Japanese food!
Good sushi. Fresh and authentic. Never found it the most welcoming place and therefore the 1 star deduction. As for the food itself, its a hidden gem both literally and figuratively. 4.5 stars if a half star was an option.
The service is friendly and efficient. And, the food is delicious!
Simply the best.
Food was average, but pricy! Especially karaage (fried chicken)so small volume cost 12.95, and tempura batter was too thick.. no wonder korean run Japanese restaurants gets more popular.
Nice restaurant run by Japanese couple.
Used to be a regular for two years. Not anymore. Lowering my review from 4 stars. Its too stressful to gamble on whether or not the wife will be in a good mood that day. Im always polite with them, but after various incidents, Ive quit on them even though their food is great. Just not worth it to be treated badly.
Definitely a hidden gem in poco. Store is mainly run by the couple that owns it, consistent quality. I would go more often but my wallet would be completely dry.
One of Prince Poo s absolute favs located in PoCo of all cities! Japanese owned and family operated, the cuts, quality and presentation keep Poo coming back for more. I ve been lucky to eat conveyor belt to high end sushi in Japan, and everything in between, including top rated places like Masayoshi and Octopus Garden in Vancouver... and while Sushi Bar Shyun isn t high end , you are getting great quality sushi at a fraction of that price range. The Deluxe Nigiri platter might be the best value I ve seen in a long time.
Our favourite restaurant. Such great care and attention to wonderful food and service.
Food is fresh and reasonably priced
Been going here for years and was really happy to learn they are still running strong through COVID! As good now as it has been since opening.
Japanese family owned and operated. Very friendly and food quality is spectacular!
Great authentic Japanese food. We have been going here for years!
I find it expensive for what you get. But quality was high and satisfying.
Hidden gem. Really worth trying. So many unique dishes!
Totally fresh, wonderful flavor and texture, worth the price. My favorite restaurant when I dont just want something to eat.
This little place is a gem and stands out as probably one of the top Sushi restaurants in all of Vancouver and the Lower Mainland. Its family run by Japanese-born owners and Katsu, the sushi chef, always has the highest quality fish. I dont know where to start with their menu - I love everything and it alls goes so well with ice cold bottles of imported Japanese beer.
friendly people and everything is good here.
One of our favorite sushi bars in the greater Vancouver area. Much better than those overpriced places in downtown. Hidden gem!
Very cozy establishment. Great service and seafood was very fresh. The lobster roll was really good but only for limited time. Definitely would come back.
I have come to know the owners fairly well over the last 9 years. Shyun is not as well known as it should be. Katsu is a certified sushi chef and it shows. Kanako is friendly, attentive, and hardworking. The subtle qualities of sushi (and accompanying cuisine) are highlighted at Shyun. The seasonal menu items are exciting for those of us who visit often. It is a family run place so it can get slow when busy on the weekends. Quality remains consistent though. To-go orders are always an option.
Ive been coming here for over a decade. it is by far my favourite sushi spot in the world. Ive tried sushi all over the Lower mainland, in the US, in Mexico, various places in Europe, and none have even come close to how amazing Shyun is. Love the owners, love the food, all around the best sushi experience youll ever have. If you dont believe me then try it for yourself
This is our favourite sushi restaurant in the tri-cities. We have been eating here for over 10 years. (We have tried just about every Japanese restaurant around here..) This is absolutely the best place for authentic Japanese food. My favourite is the Nigiri & Roll Platter - a nice combination of rolls and sushi. I also love the Tuna & Wild Sockeye sashimi. Bon Appetit!!
Great food, nice service, wonderful presentation..
Little pricier than your typical sushi joint but worth every penny. Cant say a negative thing about this place. Great food !
Very authentic and cozy restaurant run by Japanese people. Great service
This place has such high rating, but the food and the services were not good at all, needless to say it was pricy. It was very disappointed. I will never go back.
Very fresh seafood and friendly customer service!
One of the best sushi places in the Vancouver area. Soft shell crab roll is divine!
This place is worth the drive if youre not from the Port Coquitlam area. They for sure have the highest quality, traditional, authentic sushi without breaking the bank. With happy hour Tuesday to Thursday, 5pm to 6:30pm (dine in only) and rotating specials for the adventurous types, you definitely need to check this place out. You must be patient though! This is a family owned business and there is only one waitress for the whole place! Its so worth it though!
Authentic Japanese. The best sushi in Poco. The prices reflect the quality of the food.
This place is a little expensive for what it is. Decent enough food but not as authentic as I was expecting. Many of the dishes are deep fried.
This place used to be located on Lougheed Highway, but theyre now attached to a strip mall off to the side of the neighboring Safeway. The decor inside is lovely and the restaurant is small, but elegant. The couple that runs the restaurant is absolutely lovely, and they honestly seem to remember every face that comes in -- even after a couple months away, they remembered my order! They serve the most lovely rotation of desserts, as well, and bring in a specialty selections week to week, whether its quality Japanese fish or a feature dish. I sometimes go in, order a staple, and ask them to surprise me with a companion dish -- and Im never disappointed!
Great ambience. Lovely owners and the best real Japanese Sushi in the lower mainland. I love it.
It s delicious The owner is also Japanese. Is the price a little high?
This is a relatively small restaurant. We had a group of 9 and the restaurant was hesitant when taking our reservation. When we arrived the restaurant was empty but they were busy fulfilling take out. First thing they asked is if we wanted Tea. Apparently tea cost money at this Japanese restaurant. We ordered a variety of sashimi, oysters, rolls, tempuras and other cooked items. The food came at a slugs pace. We were there from 600pm and left at few minutes to 9 because the food was so slow. In terms of quality, its fine but nothing impressive. Portions were small for most items except the chicken teriyaki. At a certain point I had to keep increasing my order to adjust for the smaller portions. Bill came to $200 for 8 and a toddler. Cant say there was $200 of value. I am likely never going back as there are better options around the Coquitlam area.
Amazing food. Artistry in every dish
too salty.
Best sushi restaurant, with the highest standards for their food. For a short time, they closed down for lunch service because they couldnt find a Japanese chef for the afternoons. Kanako has my order memorized, and it doesnt matter how busy they are or how long its been since Ive gone in, the service is amazing and my order is perfect. The food is amazing. BEST agedashi tofu!!
Excellent service and awesome foods!!!!
This is the best chirashi Ive ever had.
A good combination of affordable and high end options. The server was friendly and brought dishes out immediately as they were prepared. They have daily specials that often are pricey but allow you to experience quality beyond what is normally found in the tricities.
The sushi is amazing and crafted with such care and pride. You feel like family here, and a lot of the customers are regulars. A true neighbourhood gem. We love it here.
My husband, young daughter and I popped in for dinner last week. Very extensive menu, with lots of non-sushi options. Everything was very fresh and the presentation was lovely. A bit on the pricier side but the service and quality are worth it. Well definitely be back.
The best sushi Ive had and the serive was amazing
Some of the best sushi Ive ever eaten. I had the dragon special roll. Not greasy, filling and great combination of flavors and textures.
Had ENGAMA for the first time. Tastes like high-end mushroomin a very pleasant way - chewy, jiucy, chilling, bouncy...My wife now craves for Shyun once in a while. See substantially more Japanese customers than any other Sushi restaurants in town - which tesifies its original taste. Ingrediants are soooo fresh you doubt theres an ocean and a farm right behind the kitchen! Waitress lady (wife of owner?) is an subtly interesting person. Sitting here you feel like a Japanese and will try to follow the purest Japanese vibe.
Really good sushi, expensive though. They really put in an effort to creating sushi that is almost too good looking to eat.
One of the best shushi place in Coquitlam.
Some of the best sushi Ive had anywhere, at any price! The food is amazing to look at and tastes fantastic.
Very unusual sushi place! Wonderful presentation of tasty food. Generous portions, cheap prices, funky decor. They should charge more!
We went because someone told us it was good. They were wrong it was not good...it was GREAT. the food was so beautiful and the taste amazing. The presentation was so wonderful, their use of colors and fruit was so lovely to see. Then, once we tasted it after admiring it, we were not disappointed! You should check this place out. The price was also excellent.
Great presentation, taste, portion size, and value! A very special place. Hard to find, tough to beat!
They dont just do sushi, they create edible Japanese artwork! Food is great, price is very reasonable. Presentation is just amazing. We used to live 100m away, now I drive past about 10 other sushi restaurants - just to go to Sushi Shelter 101....
Had the lunch special and was very impressed.. Top notch.
By far the best Sushi place! Everything on their menu is amazing, we try something new each time.
