3130 St Johns St #4, Port Moody, BC V3H 5E3, Canada
Here is an honest review of the place: Food: - $10 for oyako don: price is a huge plus; taste was only okay… I don’t think there was enough sauce to mask the rubber texture of the chicken - my friends had the $50 omakase. I saw the chef pulled out a long string of fish(?)/thread(?) from the sushi he put on the plate Atmosphere: - the place was super hot and humid, but overtime you get used to it - the bathroom felt very much so like your grandparent’s bathroom, but paired with the fact I saw the kitchen looked a bit not well kept, but it didn’t gave me the best feeling - the place is dead silent minus for the weirdly EDM Christmas music that kept stopping every 5 seconds (internet issue?) Service: - I can tell that the chef was trying to be friendly and funny, and for the most part we are okay with his joke and can overlook the tongue licking facial expressions he kept making, but the comment “it’s mine, is that okay?” When introducing the cod sperm sushi did not sit well for my friends and I… they both had a VERY good time swallowing the cod sperm sushi after he implied it was his (as a joke)
Cutest old couples. Very kind and sweet. Food is delicious!!! Taste of Japan right here. Deluxe nigiri (photo0
The best and cheapest Omakase in lower mainland! We had omakase (I think it was 10-12 pieces?) and was only $40. The same quality of Omakase would cost $100+ in downtown. The owner was very funny and told us that he orders everything from Japan every week! We had the best Toro(tuna belly) and it just melts in your mouth!! If you know and love the authentic sushi, you’d love his sushi! Reservations are recommended
The food was great, but Kazu and Toshi would be better options if you are looking for sushi restaurants run by Japanese. I had a deluxe nigiri set, and it was excellent. The service was a bit slow since one elderly couple runs the place. Also, the owner doesn't seem to like to have kids in the restaurant. It's better to make a reservation if you have younger kids.
I’ve been wanting to come for almost ten years and I was not disappointed. We arrived right at 5pm when they opened because we didn’t have a reservation. It’s opened by an old Japanese couple who run the restaurant by themself. Their $40 omakase is a bang for your buck. If you sit at a table you’re served the whole plate of omakase, but if you sit at the bar it’s one by one. We also tried a few other dishes and they were all pretty good. Really liked the plum shiso roll too, simple but fragrant. I need to try the chirashi don next time! Service is not very attentive given it’s just two people running the restaurant but they are nice. I want to come back again!
Was recommended by someone to visit this place and it did not disappoint! We came on a Sunday evening around 6:30pm and there were plenty of seats. Most of the fish tasted fresh and it was a good deal! Would recommend the sashimi platter as all pieces were tasty and fresh! The rice was quite fresh and warm so it would fall apart when using chopsticks but it was a minor issue! The owners were friendly. They easily split the bill although not speaking much english. Would recommend this place!
Some of the best affordable sashimi I've ever had in the lower mainland. Pretty close to the quality of fish you would get in Japan. Omakase is $40 and the assorted Sashimi platter is $50. These prices are unheard of around here considering you would pay $100 most of the time for high end Sushi. Be sure to book reservations in advance as this place is very popular and bring cash! Owner can be a big grumpy at times and his English isn't the best but he makes some good sushi!
A fascinating establishment. Run by an elderly couple, it is one of a very few Japanese joints in Lower Mainland offering an old-school setup where it's best to get seated in front of the chef and see him preparing food for you. Ingredients are exceptional. They offer fish that is very hard to find in other Japanese restaurants. Also, it is suitable for different budgets where you can get very affordable donburi and more common rolls, or something more exotic at a higher price. You shouldn't expect quick service here, and there is no problem with that – this place offers a unique atmosphere that is more important than the speed of service. It might not be for everyone, but I think this restaurant deserves more attention.
Great mom and pop shop! Quality without the bells and whistles, at a fair and reasonable price. Happy to spend money here
Thank you for this delightful experience. I ve loved discovering Omakase in this place.
Wonderful sushi
Family feels restaurant Fresh food Food
Every piece is delicious and fresh.
Great food, service and people. They did their best to provide timely service. Loved the assorted sashimi
I was on a mission to find the best authentic sushi in greater Vancouver at the behest of a friend who didn t know the difference. Just the night before I was satisfied, but only just, after an expensive omakase at a Michelin starred sushi place. Not overwhelmed, not under. Just barely whelmed . On some Reddit advice which brought me to the previous place, I made the long trek to Matsuzushi. Initial impressions were not super. It looked tired and empty. The menus didn t look inspiring. But what the heck. I already made the long drive. Boy was I surprised. Could have taken it straight out of Tokyo and plonked it down here. The food was identical to what you would find in a decent sushi-ya there. Not some overglorified, overpriced, overweening, Michelin-starred soulless experience. This was the real deal. Just watching the chefs hands at work spoke of real experience. The food was solid. I ll be back; crazy drive and all.
Authentic Japanese food. Everything was so fresh and tasty. The owner staff was so cute. I will visit again
Small restaurant run by a Japanese grandma and grandpa. Arriving at 5:30 p.m. on a weekday, we didnt have a reservation and managed to get a table for two (two adults + a child, arriving 10 minutes after us, were refused). We took the sashimi set ($60) and omakase ($50), the fish was quality and fresh, but we recommend the sashimi for the quantity, the price is unbeatable!
the omakase had the freshest fish i ever had in the lower mainland. literally melting in my mouth. the owner is such a silly little guy too, complimented my tattoos and played a joke on where the washroom was. really cute mom and pop shop
The opening hour is wrong! We drove all the way there, but they said they re closed. It s 1:50pm, the Google map says they close at 2:30. We were not allowed to go in. Bad experience.
Feel like in Japan
The sushi was excellent but the server was very inattentive and missed a drink order.
By far THE best omakase restaurant for the value, not just in town, likely across the North American continent. For the 11-piece menu that you re treated to, you d likely pay 3-10x the price anywhere else. But don t let the cheaper price fool you. The fish is just as fresh and melts in your mouth. Highly recommended to try this small but quaint location out for your next sushi fix.
Service and quality of food are going down every time i visit. Sushi was not fresh and left a very bad after taste. They charged tip already in the bill when my group size was only two.
Its an authentic Japanese place and I felt like I was back in Japan. The food was great but expensive but the quality of the fish is superb and to die for.
I came here out of curiosity after reading someone elses recommendation. The omakasee is 40 yuan. I didnt eat any particularly outstanding fish species today, nor did I eat wagyu or sea urchin like I shared before. There were no side dishes, but miso soup.
I highly recommend Matsu zushi to anyone looking for an authentic and high-quality sushi experience. I will definitely be returning soon!
There are few restaurants that are actually Japanese owned and operated. This one is rare. The restaurant is literally a mom and pop establishment. It is run by the husband, who is a legit sushi chef, and his wife, who prepares some of the food and runs front of house. And thats it. So, understandably, the service may be a bit slow, as indicated by some earlier reviews. Which isnt actually a bad thing. The food is unlike most other sushi restaurants. The fish is high quality and fresh. Many varieties of sashimi available. Everything is made to order, by the one man, so expect your food to come out one at a time, and not all at once. Value is there. If you understand and appreciate the quality of food. It is priced on the higher end for a small restaurant with absolutely no decor. Not exactly a hole in the wall either. Couldnt justify giving it 5 stars because a group of 4 was turned away an hour before posted closing time. Open/close sign was turned Closed, and neon open sign was turned off. The group entered to ask if the restaurant was still open, but the chef said they did last call. I guess the restaurant would have been slammed if they took the group.
We waited 45 minutes to get the food after ordering. Sushi wasn t fresh. It s not worth for paying $40 for Omakase.I feel like the time and service that you get is also Omakase here.I used to recommend people to come here, but I don t recommend now. Sorry to say this but they should get retired.
The old couple presents their lifelong culinary skills in front of people, so they must give it 5 stars! I was so busy enjoying the food that I forgot to take photos!
Always love coming to this cozy establishment. Run by an old japanese couple, this place has always been a gem. Fish is always fresh, fast service, great atmosphere.
The place is run by the owners, an elderly couple, very nice and the food is extraordinary. The only bad thing is that the service is very slow when there are several tables occupied. Reservations are recommended.
I visited this sushi place recently, and I have to share my experience with some reluctance. The establishment is owned by a sweet elderly couple, and it truly breaks my heart to write this. Unfortunately, the dining area was quite stuffy and lacked proper ventilation, which made the atmosphere uncomfortable. Regrettably, the food didnt meet my expectations either. The sushi wasnt very tasty, and sadly, I ended up with food poisoning afterward. I wouldnt normally post a review like this, but given the health implications, I felt it necessary to share my experience. I hope this feedback helps improve the restaurant for future guests.
Traditional Japanese Sushi Expensive compared to other houses Parking: street parking
Excellent and authentic sushi operated by two old couple, affordable Small shop and slow service, no problem! Suggest to make a reservation. (Notice in the restaurant mentioning closure in most of Apr and May due to illness)
Good quality Reasonable price Lovely master
Bad attitude from the elderly owners. Firstly - they don t allow children in the restaurant. But instead of openly and politely saying so, they claim they are full (with 4 open tables). Luckily we were ordering takeout. Another couple came in after us with their baby, and the same message was said to them. The owner then spoke in Japanese to some customers saying that it was because babies are loud, thus the message is repeated to all families with young ones. Luckily, my wife spoke Japanese and understood what the owner was saying. Awful attitude! We ordered Karaage - and were told no. sold out . Quality of food - not much to write home about. Rice is wet. Fish isn t the freshest. Chicken was of a cheaper quality. Tempura was soft. Avocado roll had mayo. Do not recommend.
Love it!! Order chef s special and the chef is so nice.
Ive seen some amazing reviews of this place from food vloggers and some of the amazing reviews other had here so was excited to try. I was a bit disappointed I did not receive the same quality that everyone else got. I only got the $40 Omakase and it looked and tasted very avg to almost T&T level. I came in for lunch on a Saturday. Is there a day of the week or timing that quality is better? It was pretty slow when I went, the bar was full but there was only 1 other table besides me.
Super delicious and fun
trying to make reservations is impossible. Even if u call during business hours it goes to voicemail and u cant leave a msg.
Very friendly service from the owner couple. Food are super-yummy
Atmosphere / Service: This is a hole in the wall kind of spot run by a elderly couple. The restaurant wasn t well ventilated and felt a bit stuffy. Because it s run by just a couple, service is a bit on the slow side. Food: We ordered four omakase sets, which based on the menu should be 44 pieces + 4 temaki. However, we received only 39 pieces of nigiri and 4 temaki. Understand that this is chef s choice , but this made it difficult for our party of four to split the pieces. In total, we were missing 5 pieces of sushi.
Omakase is great. Very happy to be back after all these years. Food : 5/5
This will satisfy your Japan cravings, the quality is on par. Save the tuna for last. The price increased to 40 for omakase, but still relatively reasonable compared to Vancouver prices. 100% worth the long drive for us.
Top notch. Just see my pics from Apr 2023 and Jan 2024. Have been here many times and always come back a a variety of sashimi and omakase. Super cheap for what we get. Service is slow compared to another store but they are a old couples who still love making sushi for their customers..just feel like how you dine at some old local restaurant in Japan. Take your time and enjoy the food
My new favourite omakase spot. Absolutely amazing and fresh
Best mom and pop shop :)
A family owned and operated traditional sushi joint. The fish was super fresh and decently priced for the quality. I was pleasantly surprised to find out the chef brews his own wheat-free soy sauce! The owners are very kind and humorous. Im looking forward to my next visit.
An omakase that cost only 40/person, 11 nigiris plus one hand roll, worth the price. Lil delicate shop that run by an old couple, welcoming and warm. Signatures cups and plates, it s detail oriented. Overall great quality for food and definite my worth trying.
Matsuzushi is an authentic sushi restaurant specializing in Omakase in Port Moody. I dined here for the first time today, and absolutely loved it! I would HIGHLY reccomend booking reservations. There is no chance of walk-ins as this restaurant is very popular among locals (for good reasons) Food: My friends and I each ordered our own Omakase set. Each set is $40 and includes 11 nigiri pieces, 1 temaki hand roll and a miso soup. Im not sure if the Omakase set features different variety of fishes depending on the season or time of year, but for my set, I remember getting salmon, toro, squid, uni, ebi, scallop, and many other types of fishes. I throughly enjoyed each and every piece of the set. It was DELICIOUS. If you are seated at the bar, the chef will prepare and serve each nigiri pieces in front of you, whereas if you are seated at a table, your nigiri pieces will come in a box/plate all at once. My friends and I were able to reserve seats at the sushi bar, and the experience was none to other. Being able to watch the craftsmanship of the chefs was a show on itself. Thus I reccomend reserving bar seats if you can. Atmosphere: The restaurant itself is quite small, but very homey and cozy. The place is run by the SWEETEST Japanese couple. There are no additional servers, it is just the two of them working the restaurants. Considering how busy the place can get, the service is relatively quick. I am so glad to have been able to try out Matsuzushi, and I cannot wait to come back and try more dishes from them!
Excellent place. True Japanese sushi.
Worth the price. Must try. Overall great quality for food and definite my worth trying.
Hello, I would like to book for 2. But there is nobody picking up my phone call. I tried for 3 days already!!!! And also the voice message is full. Could someone get back to me?
Such a great experience! Amazing quality omakase for a very reasonable price. We sat at the bar for my best friends birthday and had the opportunity to watch the sushi chef (sweetest man ever) work his magic. Patience is a must as the restaurant operates with 2-3 very hardworking people. Call ahead to make reservations! This is one of my new favourite little gems in Port Moody!
Gonom. Its really delicious.. Sashimi... I got to experience the true taste of raw fish after it has been aged. Next time one more time
Fresh quality, I love the old couple, Hard working people
My go to spot for homey omakase, will return time and time again
Wonderful omakase experience. The chef was so friendly and welcoming. Definitely coming back!
Been here three times already and it has been a fantastic experience every time! The sushi is great quality for very reasonable prices. I always make sure to leave a generous tip because the omakase is definitely worth more than the $35 and the service is great. Definitely the best sushi you can get around Metro Vancouver
Friendly service with some of the best sushi Ive ever had in Vancouver.
This place is a gem! Authentic, delicious, fresh and high quality food, run by a kind older couple. One of the best sushi and Japanese food restaurants BC!
Maybe the chef had a bad day, but regardless we re never going back. Tempura was not crispy and looked - and tasted - like it came out of a microwave. Omakase for 2 had flavorless fish. Miso black cod was undercooked. Best part was the auto tip which you don t see until you get the receipt. Go for it if you want but this isn t even close to quality sushi. Brutal overall
Owners are NOT child friendly. Called to make a reservation and was told infants are not allowed at dinner service. Ridiculous.
Order the lunch Omakase set for two on a weekday but was very disappointed with service, quality of the food and price. The bill came to over $90. The grandpa sushi chef auto tip 20% and just took my CC to tap. I find this very unethical. Sushi completely fell apart when you pick it up. The restaurant was also not kid friendly and HVAC did not work. This is nothing close to being a traditional Japanese Omakase food experience.
Sadly a completely disappointing experience. Made a reso 2 months in advance only to be told that our bar seats were taken. No apology, no explanation. We overheard that our spots were simply given to Japanese speakers by the chef. I found bones and fish scales in the omakase, which I had to spit out. Definitely not an authentic omakase experience. Chef also only interacts with Japanese speakers, which made everything uncomfortable. Would not recommend this to anyone, I wouldnt trust the majority of the other reviews worshipping this place. The people here are borderline discriminatory.
Good quality food. Three stars because some items on the menu are a bit overpriced for what they are (e.g. sashimi). You can get similar quality fish and larger pieces for 20-30% less in other reputable restaurants in the area. Also, as many reviewers pointed out, the owner likes to take your credit card and automatically give himself a tip I dont think this is acceptable. Something tells me this wont be seen as normal in Japan either. Not sure Ill be back soon.
Pop up to the shop on Thursday late afternoon without reservation. Luckily us can be seated and enjoyed the 10-PCs premium Omakasai sushi. The chef and staff are super friendly and nice. With the well known old and traditional setting. Side order two sashimi are in well quality. Freshness and sauce pairing are excellent.
We tried the omakase, and a few other rolls and they were pretty good. The uni nigiri was very light and had a nice texture, and the other fish nigiris were fresh and tasty. The only thing was that a few rolls were a bit hard to pick up because they were sticking to each other and starting to fall apart. Service was decent and the restaurant doesnt look very fancy, but it does have a quaint and cozy vibe to it. Overall was a good experience! The place does get full quick so if you go without a reservation, especially in the evening, there may not be a table available, so try to book in advance.
High quality food, owner constantly refilled our tea, but the atmosphere was too quiet (is this normal in the Japanese culture?) to have a conversation.
Great prices, sushi was fresh and delicious. I didn t understand the flags hanging over the doors, had to duck under and felt a little silly doing so. Other than that, deeply satisfied!
Small family run restaurant. $40 omakase is definitely worth it given the quality. Not huge portions but is a good lunch.
The service at this restaurant is very poor. On some occasions, the owner has been known to stop taking orders altogether, and at other times, they may refuse to serve you.
Small little joint - smelled strongly of fish when we went in. Wish we could have eaten here but were told they were full. Bit disappointing - not sure if we ll try again.
Omakase is a must try! The sushi chef started as an apprentice when he was 15 and has been practicing for 60 years. Super experienced.
Went for lunch today, a bit of disappointment, since sashimi not as fresh maybe they were off Tuesday and Wednesday. Maybe better for other days or evening time.
By far the best omakase anywhere around the Greater Vancouver area in regards to price and quality of sushi. I regret not coming to Matsuzushi years prior just because of how good the sushi quality is here.
Family run restaurant. You have to make a reservation or you will most likely not get a seat. Great value omakase for its price. Owner / main chef doesnt speak much English, but you can mostly get by with hand gestures as needed. Authentic mom and pop shop experience.
No suggest to you
$40 omakase set - super delicious value if you re in the Port Moody area. I m a tourist and really enjoyed the food, so I will make the trek again on my next YVR visit 11 pieces of nigiri + 1 temaki made with super fresh fish and care. Let the freshness shine! Enjoyed the variety and the different textures! The miso soup was also super balanced and was a wonderful way to start the meal.
We tried the $40 omakase. It was pretty decent and you could tell the fish was fresh The restaurant itself is quite small but has an authentic feel to it. The owner is friendly as well. Overall great experience for the price!
This restaurant serves authentic Japanese sushi!! Sushi is so fresh and delicious, and the chef is very humor and friendly!! I definitely come visit here again. Recommended dishes
Overall the omakase here is still quite good for the price (however the variety of fish didnt change since I came 2 months ago), but I had the weirdest experience. The old man added the tip for me and refused to let me add my own tip and tap my own card. He inserted the card and forced me to put the pin in after telling him several times I prefer to do it myself. We had to redo the transaction multiple times because he charged me the wrong amount. I wouldve come back again for the omakase as it was my 2nd time in 3 months but after this experience it really threw me off. Is this normal?
Made a reservation but the owner kept denying any reservation was made... made us pull up our call logs and all but still kept denying the reservation. Okay, the restaurant was empty minus 1 table so couldnt we have been seated anyway? Nope - the owner had to keep arguing with us OUT LOUD that we never made a reservation... so we ended up leaving.
The food is fresh and tasty but the portion is a bit small
Tried our luck for a table on Saturday night without resos as we lived nearby. I had also called ahead earlier around 5:30 to ask if they happened to have a table for 4 people tonight, and said we are flexible and anytime can work so the grandpa chef on the phone told us maybe around 7 . So I said okay and since we lived nearby we just rolled in around 7 to check and said hey we spoke on the phone earlier, and asked if he can seat us. So he hemmed and hawed in Japanese. Meanwhile 3 empty tables. I said to him just 4 and it s 2 adults 2 kids so we don t mind squeezing to smaller table . The grandpa chef right away changed tone as soon as I mentioned kids. Kids? NO! NO KIDS! complete with hand gesture. His demeanor went from friendly to hostile real quick. So heads up- don t bring your kids because they re not welcomed. And there was no earlier indicator that kids aren t allowed. Sushi bar Maumi specifically states no kids at time of booking which is a fair heads up. We ve been there years ago when our son was around 2 and the omakase was still $35 so we didn t realize it has changed to kids not allowed.
We had the sweetest experience here! The omakase was super delicious, fresh & great value for $40! We sat at the bar and the chef served us each piece separately. He was so welcoming, friendly & hilarious. We felt so full and happy after. Would definitely visit again!
Chef is a super funny, staff is friendly and welcoming. Clean simple atmosphere. The best sushi in the lower mainland. Offers some extremely rare seafood you cant find at a normal sushi restaurant. Parking: Street parking is decent Kid-friendliness: Friendly Staff gave lolipops to my younger siblings
Food taste frozen , I got 2 spider rolls and it was extremely fishy and tasted gross, spent 40 dollars for no reason.
I went to various Japanese restaurants and sushi shops, but this restaurant had the true taste of Japan. At $40 for omakase sushi, its very affordable by Canadian standards. The Wagyu beef sashimi is also great. There were some items that you wouldnt find at other restaurants, so I enjoyed the meal. Highly recommended for Japanese people living in Vancouver!
Authentic Japanese food prepared beautifully by the owners. The best in Port Moody by far! Make a reservation if you want to dine as they have lots of regular customers. Parking: Free parking on St. John s St. or around the corner on the side street.
Have been here a few times and the only standout feature here is the omakase at the counter, which is a unique experience and of decent value at $40. Otherwise, it s your standard sushi spot that s overpriced. I would recommend this spot only if you get the omakase at the counter, which won t even happen even though you make a reservation at the bar and confirm it with them multiple times on the phone. Needless to say, I was disappointed and won t be coming back as it s out of the way and there are much better alternatives all around the region.
A place where you can enjoy omakase cheaply Overall, the sushi quality is pretty good.
Very rustic and authentic Japanese little sushi shop :) I got the deluxe chirashi don and my partner got the salmon don. Chef and server were cute little oba and oji chans and we really enjoyed our quick lunch!
Authentic Japanese Cuisine, friendly owners (chef couple), omakase is of great value, good portion and very fresh. We will definitely visit again.
We ordered the omakase however the fish selection was not good. As you can see from the picture there were not a lot of specialty nigiris. I understand its chefs choice so sometimes youll get scallops and uni, whereas this time we got three types of tuna and fish roe... With that being said the quality of the sushi is great. Probably one of the only non-korean owned sushi restaurant in metro Van.
Amex accepted. Good atmosphere.creservations recommended. If the owner feels that the place is too busy and he cant provide good service, he would turn away customers. Had deluxe churashi don, assorted sashimi and omakase. Deluxe chirashi don>assorted sashimi>omakase, service was great.
This place was hyped up and we drove from Vancouver to finally try the omakase. I wasn t a huge fan though my two friends enjoyed it. Food wasn t bad but nothing notable.
This restaurant is AMAZING! The nigiri was fresh and you can tell the cuts are spot on. I ordered the omakase and everything on that plate was delicious and shows lots of effort. Vegetarian options: There are quite a bit. Parking: Lots of spots, you just sometimes have to park on the lot across the streets
Great food with great value. Where can you find $40 Omakase in Vancouver with this quility? Must try! Food : 4/5
nice family running the store & super accommodating ! will definitely come back, worth the drive
Great price for sushi! Tried the omakase for $40. The nigiris were amazing
Decent sushi, but not the best
Absolutely loved the omakase experience. Make sure you get a reso! Amazing sushi. Reminds me of Japan. Great little spot in Port Moody. Would recommend and return!
The place used to be a decent sushi place a few years ago. I haven t been there for 3 years, and tried it again yesterday. Unfortunately, the restaurant is now visibly dirty and neglected, lots of dead plants in the pots are sitting on the floor. My glass with water was dirty with smth floating in it Tea cups and reusable chopsticks were also not very clean. Sushi were just okay, not impressed. But on top of this dissatisfaction, the food gave us severe food poisoning later in the evening. I would not recommend this restaurant anymore.
Best place to have sushi in Coquitlam, highly recommended.
A small shop with a human touch
Wow.. a hidden gem. A friend brought me here, INCREDIBLY fresh fish. Reso needed. Dont come for rolls, come get the incredible real sushi this man and his family make. The three measures of an excellent sushi shop: fish quality, rice quality, and tamago quality. All are EXCELLENT here. Definitely a worthwhile visit for sushi nerds.
Comfortable, casual, & warm environment. My partner & I were able to sit at the bar where we were able to chat & watch the chef. Chef was lovely & made us laugh! We had the omakase which we felt was a good value. The hot sake was lovely as well! I plan to bring my dad there in the near future :)
Very fresh sashimi
A Japanese couple and a younger generation in the Kitchen, taste Japanese family style, we had the omakesi sushi set and sashimi bowl, we like that!
100% get the omakase. 11 pieces of fresh sushi + 1 temaki (including a taste of uni and toro) for $40 is great value considering Vancouver s prices. Comparable to a some restaurants in Japan.
Great lunch combos at affordable price. The sushi master was so friendly and funny, we wanna come back for sure
Best place for authentic shushi! No soy sauce but deal with it.
I was looking forward to eat here but unfortunately I was quite disappointed. 3/5 for atmosphere since the whole restaurant smells like a fish market. 2/5 for service since I paid for 5 rolls, was given 4 rolls, had to go back to inquire about the last roll only to be told sorry we don t have that one right now and had to insist on a refund (was only refunded 70% of that roll for some reason). 3/5 for food since it was very average tasting and most of my sushi was falling apart/not rolled well. Seems like whoever made it was in a hurry.
Very friendly couple, but food has really gone downhill. I understand that having only one chef and it being lunch hour that it was slow, so I did not complain about the 50 minute wait at all. Unfortunately, the wait was not at all worth it as my child and I both got food poisoning from the obviously not very fresh ingredients which tasted odd and sour even the pickled ginger (looked like store bought) tasted expired and off. I chose all cooked menu items just to be safe too, but it didn t matter. It saddens me to share this experience as I really wanted to continue to show my support after finding them again after their moved from the old address.
Authentic Japanese sushi! 50 mins drive was definitely worth it! Lovely mom and pop shop atmosphere. I ordered the Omakase, nigiri combo, and oyako don. They are super good and reasonably priced.
This place is so much better than you think it is. Lovely old couple running the place for many years. Its not fancy, but the sushi is fresh and the rice is properly made (a rare thing in Vancouver). The value for money is really something else here. Recommended.
A small Japanese restaurant located in Port Moody that serves really good value Omakase (11 sushi, 1 hand roll, and miso soup) for $40. The owners are Japanese and they even conversed with some of the patrons there in Japanese. The sushi chef was very quick at making the omakase for us and although it didn t look like a lot, it was very filing and can be overwhelming for those not used to eating a lot of different raw seafood at the same time. The wasabi is right within and sushi itself. Other than raw fish, they also had some cooked dishes too. Very homey vibe and good service. Would recommend if you re looking for a little bit of Japan in Port Moody.
Cozy atmosphere and delicious food!
Fresh and tasty
Best value for omakase in Vancouver! The owners are so sweet, and the nigiri is fresh and flavourful. Been coming here for years and the quality is still solid. Would recommend making a reservation in advance.
Hands down the best sushi place in the entire metro Vancouver, if not the entire Canada if you think about the price-to-quality ratio. The owners English is... iffy to say the least, but thats also a plus when one can speak Japanese (better service, haha). Very freshly sourced fish, well cured, perfectly prepared to give one the actual, authentic Japanese sushi experience.
We tried to get in to have sushi and the old guy standing in the sushi bar said because we bring baby in and he refused us to get in. He said will your baby cry? If cry we don t let baby in. So not respecting new born. Never going to this place. The place is gloomy and when you get in, it s so dirty with a smell.
Worst sushi place.
Sushi was fresh and close to what you could get in Japan. The server doesnt know the difference between regular and deluxe chirashi and just mentioned they are different which made us laugh. While paying by credit card, the server was staring at how much tips youre paying which made me uncomfortable.
Loved this place, ordered double omakase each.
Dont understand the hype its kinda mid I get that its like authentic but... The fish was luke warm the whole store was stuffy and hot The food is good but not exceptional and nothing really stood out to me Didnt give me food positioning so it gets a pass
Strengths: Fresh fish, rice was well cooked. It reminds me of sushi I ate in Tokyo - thats a good thing. Weakness: Pricy for just a few small pieces of sushi. Overall: Yes its an omakase but no one will fill up from these few pieces. It was delicious and Ill go back again on a special occasion.
Found some fish BONES in the sashimi! !!!!! Very bad experience and if I could give a 0 score if it is possible. The chef keep walking between the two tables beside us and chatting with other customers the whole time. No service at our table at all which is fine but the food is really terrible as well! We even found fish bone inside the sashimi!!!?? This is the first time I experiencing this! I never seen a fish bone when eating sashimi! The restaurant also smell really bad and all our clothes smell very OILY afterwards like after you went to a barbecue or hot pot place. Also found a few slides of sashimi not fresh. True It s cheap $35 for omakase but NOT worth it at all. Feel like waste of my money!
Questionable hygiene standards (use table cloths for wiping hands, table, in between tables?), literally saw a fly flying in and out of counter in multiple visits, place smells oily. Nigiri is small. Today I found bones in the nigiri fish. This happened more than once now. Sushi rice is not at usual Japnese-owned sushi place standards. Its disappointing compared to other Japanese owned sushi stores in nearby neighborhoods.
Taste bad! Not worth!
Amazing value Omakase, local dedicated chefs that you can chat with at the bar. The only thing holding me back from giving 5 stars was how the restaurant had poor ventilation and was very humid on a rainy day (10 Degrees outside). I will visit again for sure, but will have to wait until temperatures are warmer so inside is not as humid.
Definitely NOT worth the price!!!! Highly NOT recommended! Don t understand why the rating is high. The nigiri sushi is not fresh as well. The sashimi smells like in the fridge for a while.
Their omakase is delicious! Didnt expect this much quality from this price!
It was my first time having omakase and it was phenomenal. Toshi was amazing! He was so caring and showed so much hospitality. You can tell that the sushi was made with so much warmth. They genuinely love what they do and want you to have the best experience. I will be coming here everytime Im visiting!
I dont know how a highly rated establishment could have such disgraceful staff Upon entering the place was stifling hot from poor ventilation; we took a chance and still proceeded to get a table This was when the staff began yelling at us: do you have a reservation? If not, you cant dine here They repeated these statements in a demeaning way We were so mortified that we left The place wasnt even full
I dont understand the high rating. The sushi was not fresh at all and this place has terrible hygiene. Yes, its cheap, $35 for an omakase but even then it wasnt worth it. We also had the wagyu sashimi and it wasnt fresh either (my boyfriend and I had a bit of a stomach ache after). Also, thre were flies going in and out of the sashimi fridge and the place was hot inside. Really not worth it...
Best to reserve a time because they will turn you away if they are fully booked. My fiancé and I travel from Vancouver just to eat here with his Japanese coworkers. The fish is always fresh and made with perfection. It is an older Japanese couple that runs the business so please be patient, they work very hard. There are very few western sushi rolls here so keep that in mind. This our go-to for authentic sushi !
A truly authenic Japanese sushi place! Food is tasty and I like the atmosphere.
Its run by the same old Burquitlam Matsuzushi (Japanese grocerys food court, closed a decade ago) veteran chef, so the food tastes the same, good. But the prices have been up quite a bit, unfortunately. Its the second coming, but the pricing is different. Its a shame.)
Great value!! Omakase $35/person and you can get miso soup, 11 pcs of nigiri and one hand roll. Food was decent quality, highly recommend!
Only try if youre already in the area. The sashimi was fresh and their omakase is really cheap, $35 for 11 pieces but its all very basic ones. This place looks family owned and theyre quite slow but we didnt mind it since we had great company. We live in Vancouver though, and dont think I would drive 40 mins again to eat here but if I was in the area and had lots of time, then maybe.
Youre obviously not going to get Octopus Garden/Minami quality here, but for a 35$ omakase the value x quality is there. On our visit, the rice was slightly mushier than I would have liked, but the fish quality was surprisingly good. We also snagged a spot at the bar so was able to get a more traditional piece-by-piece omakase experience. I wouldnt go out of my way for this but if youre in the area why not? I also appreciate the rustic feel of the restaurant and the food. Service was what youd expect at a mom n pop joint. I would call ahead just to make sure they have a spot because it a smaller place.
had a great, very chill canada day dinner here today. the hosts were absolutely lovely people. had the omakase, some roll with like gourd and spinach and stuff in it, and gyoza. very good
It is hard to find a place with bluefin tuna in this price. Can not tell the best costomer service here. But, if you have a reservation, it would be better.
The chef is very friendly and the sushi he made is absolutely delicious. The fish is super fresh and the best is that the temperature when is presented is just right. Price is affordable too!!! Love it!!! I have high expectations before going, but it exceed that!!!
I called to make a reservation but mentioned I had to bring my baby, and they said I couldnt because other people will complain that its noisy if my baby cries. Just an FYI for new moms who wanted to go here. Giving 4 stars for no good reason.
Very disrespectful staff.
The best sushi place I ve ever!!! I love this restaurant , it makes me feel like I am in Japan again when I step into the restaurant. It s a family run restaurant and the chef is a really experienced chef. We re lucky to have this place in Vancouver.
FYI. They are closed until Aug 25, 2022.
Found a bone in my sashimi which has never happened at any other sushi establishments. The fish was also not fresh and the chef touched multiple objects (phone, cups) in between slicing the fish
If you want authentic Japanese food, this is the place. My wife is Japanese and is very particular when it comes to Japanese food. We have been dining here for over 20 years. The real deal.
Omakase is very affordable and good quality!!!
This is one of those places where people put way too much weight on the fact that the people operating the business are Japanese. Yes I get it many different nationalities try their hand at sushi restaurants thinking that its an easy thing to do and in doing so tarnishing the cuisine. It is somewhat of a relief to find some Japanese restaurants that are actually run by Japanese people, I get it. Yes Its authentic yes its traditional and yes all of the fish are imported from Japan as thebowner proudly said but whats wrong with locally caught? Whats more fresh than haida gwaii sockye salmon or B.C. spotted prawns or tuna off the coast of Olympia? Ive had sushi more fresh than this at countless sushi restaurants in the LM. Serving only imported fish from Japan borders on Aquatic Racism and is a disservice to sushi connosieurs. The presentation was below average, the service was below average, and I have no idea why the IG crowd rave about it having the cheapest omakase in town. Omakase is the Japanese equivalent of surprise me. The chef puts together a set and and in this case keeps it at $35. I cant say that was necessarily cheap considering what we got. I went with 2 children and 3 adults (5 people) and the total bill was $230. Cheap? I dont think so. The part that left a real bad taste in my mouth was the 18% tip was automatically included in the bill. As much as they pride themselves on being from the land of no tipping, I find including a tip of 18% is very conveniently Western. There are much better options in the area even if your budget is $35. Oh, and at the end of the meal, we were still starving so went down to lazy dog for some tuna sandwiches and a chocolate oreo coconut jelly BBT like a BOSS!
Food tasted delicious and fresh. Ordered The $35 Omakase, came with 11 pieces (I think, I can t rmb) I wasn t sure what I was eating because they don t really communicate that well, but I liked it all. It comes with complimentary miso soup. I wasn t full from the $35 so I ordered more food No takeout allowed. Service isn t quick, it s a family run business, so don t expect superb service! Reservations HIGHLY recommended!!! They will reject walk ins on weekend evenings.
I gave this restaurant a second chance, and unfortunately I still left in disappointment... Their famous omakaze sushi was poorly made as all the nigiri sushi fell apart once it touched the chopsticks. Their sashimi were oddly warm. My chopped scallop roll looked like it was smashed and squished. I added one more star that their service was okay. So all in all, A for trying but still need improvement
Food was great, owner operated and very nice people.
Omakase is very high quality
Everyone said that this place is super authentic and that I needed to try. I was intrigued. Went for lunch time dine-in omakase. It is average (fish and rice). seated at a table meant to be outside despite a free pre-set regular table available. Service was fine. It was odd at the end, when paying out the bill they wouldnt hand me the machine, and automatically added tips and tapped my card for me which I did not appreciate and found incredibly odd.
As of Oct 2022, price has escalated to $40 pp. Went on a Sat for lunch, we werent seated at the counter but at a table. Everything was served at once in a tray. Lost the interaction with the sushi chef and the explanation of what each pieces were. Service was so so. Good quality fish overall but at $40 pp, no longer a great value. Would suggest you order the nigiri comb at $25 and try other things.
Very good quality sushi. Omakase was fresh and worth it for the price.
Terrible value. The portion sizes are small, nigiri and rolls are all falling apart and have no structural integrity. The fish was fresh and served at the perfect temperature, but my god do they skimp on portion sizes! Expect to get sushi thats half the size equivalent at other restaurants. I think inflation must have hit them hard or something.
Sat at the bar for the omaskase for my friends birthday dinner, which gives you 11 pieces of nigiri and one temaki (cone) per person. Prices went up on Oct 1st, so it is now $40 per person. Still a great deal and the sushi is great. We were the first ones for dinner so the first pieces of fish seemed a bit too cold. The temperature and texture of the rice was ok but the structure of the nigiri was fragile and the rice can fall apart easily. The chef can spend more time to press the rice a bit more. My friend kept on bringing the plate closer to her and using a spoon to eat the sushi because the nigiri fell apart if she used her chopsticks. Ive been to other places for omaskase and its not supposed to be like that. Overall, I enjoyed the sushi and I liked the Toro and Uni and negitoro cone the best. Also enjoyed the Hamachi cheek ($12). The service was good. Atmosphere wise, the restaurant is old and has not been renovated. The chef charged an automatic 15% tip to my bill.
This place has gone downhill significantly. The menus are old and gross, significantly higher food prices compared with other sushi restaurants, and the place is filthy. The bathrooms don t get cleaned, and you can see the back kitchen is a mess. Despite this, I liked showing up when possible to support a local business. I was just taken aback when I went to pay and the person (without my permission) added a tip. I always tip well, and I would never consider not tipping. However he just took my card and selected whatever tip option he wanted and he did not ask my permission. When the process was going through I asked him to stop because I wanted to tip him But he just kept on shaking his head. When I asked to see the receipt I saw that he already tipped himself whatever amount he decided. I did not want to cause a big scene over a few dollars, in fact I probably would ve tipped him more than what he tipped himself. It just shows that this person is dishonest and I will not be coming back. If you were going to dine here, make sure that you check your receipts.
Small restaurant run by a lovely Japanese couple. Visited for lunch for the first time and the food was delicious! Quality, fresh fish and kind, attentive service. Will definitely be back and cant wait to try the omakase!
First of all, extremely rude. We made a reservation over a week ago. We arrive on time and owner was saying we did not have a reso. He was laughing and making us look bad. Later he found our name booked on the wrong date. Not even one time he said sorry. Second, extremely dirty. There were small flies around the cooking area. Rags are extrmely dirty and the chef keeps wiping the knife on it. He once dropped the bamboo roller in the floor. Picks it right up and the rolls the rice. He uses leaves picked up from the street. Third, the omkase is not a real omakase experience. We sat at the bar for unique omakse experience. Chef did not talk to us once but had lengthy talks with Japanese guests who sat next to us. Lastly, the ambience is weired. Super silent and dark. Makes you feel like you have to eat fast and get out. Food was okay...not the freshest fish. Dont waste your time here. Just order omakse diner price worth of nigiri and regular sushi store. Do not recommend at all
We ordered takeout for 2 people. The owner tipped himself 15% without our permission. I wouldn t mind if there was a sign that said auto 15% gratuity on all orders, but without the customer s knowledge is completely unacceptable. There are other reviews mentioning this.
We had a reservation for the counter that was for 7.30. We arrived at 7.25 then he told us we were late he didn t give us the counter. Food was good. The taste was close to real japanese food
Delicious omakase! Super fresh too, as there was no fishy odour both times I dined here. I easily gag at seafood smells, but it was a miracle that I could eat uni here without doing so! Perhaps it s because it s a small family business, but something about dining here feels like dining as a guest at someone s house. Very pleasant and authentic.
Ive been to many sushi restaurants in my life in different countries, and I truly believe this was the best sushi Ive ever had. Ever. I was very pleasantly surprised with how fresh the seafood tasted, and I finally got to have nigiri with a bit of wasabi spread on the rice, the way its supposed to be. The omakase and rolls were all so delicious. Service can be a bit slow as its run by a lovely older couple. The tea served is also really great. Definitely recommend.
This was a surprise, did not expect such a good place hidden away. The sushi was really good, like really good. Great value for price. I tried the omakase and the chiraishi deluxe. I would say the chiraishi is better value, omakase has better presentation and comes in form of nirigi. There was sea urchin, different types of tunas and not cheap salmon or imitation crab. Only down side is that it was pretty hot in there and the bathroom wasnt very clean. I think they could use a little bit of renovation. Service was great, arigato. Note: RESERVE a few days before.
Very decent food quality and service. Air circulation is good. Recommended.
It is a must go sushi restaurant in Port Moody. We sat at the bar table and seeing the chef making the sushi in front of us! Little restaurant runs by a couple and son. Love to come back soon!
This place is fantastic for a romantic and cute dinner. Totally recommend coming here and trying out the chefs omakase.
Me and my hubby liked their omakase! The portion is great for me but my hubby ordered chicken karaage. Definitely it s a place for sushi!!
The best place for sushi. Very fresh & authentic menu... and all run by a small but mighty team!
I m super happy that I found this hidden gem! It is a clean and neat small restaurant owned by an old Japanese couple, they are very friendly and have such a great courtesy like every Japanese people I have ever met in my life. We are a group of 6 people and each of us ordered lunch omakase. We are so full after 11 nigiri and 1 temaki! The fish was fresh and delicious just like other reviews said, and the price is $40 per person, what a great value, especially in Vancouver. I would definitely come back again and again when I want some yummy sushi, and I m excited to try something else on the menu.
Authentic gestures and great value for money! ! ! I just don t know why other people can eat Otoro s sashimi. I looked through the menu and can t find it (the only photos are these and the others are so delicious that I forgot to take pictures). So far, I have eaten here no less than 20 times, including cod and shrimp tempura. It can be said that Luo will never fail and must be ordered every time. If the store were not so far away as here but opened in Richmond or Vancouver, you can imagine that the queue would definitely be a month later! I sincerely say that it s delicious and you don t have to worry about the long journey (anyway, my baby s friends will bring me here)!
