Deurdrift St, Prince Albert, 6930, South Africa
Delicious food, kitschy decor, and charming old-fashioned service. Cannot recommend this place enough for a dinner experience with South African classics. They are able to facilitate card payments now, so they’ve certainly modernised where needed!
Amazing food with even better service. Very warm, welcoming atmosphere and friendly hosts who treat you like part of their family.
Had dinner at the Karookombuis in Prince Albert for the last 23 years. So many good memories! If you want to experience true authentic home cooked food and a wonderful atmosphere in this quaint restaurant in the Karoo, this is the place for you! Take your own wine for a wonderful cosy dinner experience. Theuns and Denise will be your hosts.
I know the owners won’t ever see this review…it’s not what matters to them. What an amazing evening out. Our teenagers said it’s the best meal they’ve ever had. Wonderful food and beautiful memories made with our family. Can highly recommend…
This is a treat every time. The food is amazing. Real karoo food, leg of lamb, Bobotie, chicken pie with veggies, yellow rice and crispy baked potato. Malva pudding or lemon baked pudding (amazing) with a huge ball of ice cream. The service is friendly and entertaining. Such an experience. Keep doing what you have been doing for the last 26 years.
Don’t walk here ! Run here. A phenomenal dining experience in the heart of the Karoo. A dream team of three - Louis, Theuns and Maria welcomes you in a homely environment with only 6 tables for ultimate intimacy. Beautifully prepared traditional Karoo food. My husband does not like lamb and he even had a second serving . Miracle! Celebrating 25 years this year and with a menu that has not changed much since then, they obviously have the winning touch. Nothing fancy. They keep it simple! We will always come and visit when in Prince Albert ♥️ Ps : order the Karoobord (mix plate of lamb, bobotie and chicken pie) for the main meal Dankie julle ♥️♥️
A trip to Prince Albert won’t be complete without having dinner at this tiny restaurant, with a huge Karoo heart. The venue is a typical to the region, small, old house, with only 6 tables, creating a cosy and intimate dining experience. The menu has not changed over the last 24 years and all the dishes make you feel like you’re visiting a long-lost uncle, who has prepared a Karoo feast for your visit. Reservations made well in advance is essential; cash payments only and take your own wine or alcohol. The establishment caters for Vegetarians, but not Vegans. It was meeting the three owners and experiencing how they take such great care of their patrons, that captured my heart!
A must visit place when you are in Prince Albert. A great Siuth African dining experience. Tasty meals and great flavor..they only have 3 main course menu that you can have it all in one plate, chicken pie, bobotie and slow roast lamb...they all great taste but I love the Bobotie the most! ..not to forget the malva pudding to end your dinner! Although it was loadshedding when we had our dinner but we had a great time ! Thank you!!
Outstanding. Just what we wanted. Real cooking. Lamb and bobotie. Outstanding service. Traditional Karoo food
Lovely evening with friendly hosts. Food was also good. Will be back.
Best home cooked food in the Karoo. I come here every time I visit. Loveliest people and delicious food every time!
The food and atmosphere were fantastic.
This restaurant is an absolute must when visiting Prince Albert. You are served by the owners themselves and it is such a treat. Here you will be served a good wholesome three course traditional Karoo plate of food. The food is amazing and every bite is filled with flavor, typical of the Karoo!! You must make a reservation prior to visiting the restaurant. You will not regret visiting them.
A little gem hidden in Prince Albert.
We were just there. Food and hospitality excellent, ambience is slightly strange in a good sense. Fazu more than fair prices (a reasonable CabSov ZAR 85,-). Big recommendation
An authentic Karoo dinner served by the owners in their home. The food is devine and definitely worth doing when in Prince Albert
Lovely people, good food and great atmosphere! Thanks guys. You were great!
Incredibly nice hosts in a wonderfully authentic environment. The living room with 6 tables, bring your own wine and choice of 3 dishes. Just wonderful! 11 out of 10 points, thank you for this great evening! Cornelia and Micha
If you find yourself in a Prince Albert, you cannot miss the cozy restaurant. Note that you must reserve in advance as there are only 6 tables.
We enjoyed the home cooked meal and desert served by Theuns that is assisted by Louis. A set menu is followed by the restaurant. Still top quality food.
We got the tip via Onse Rust House to eat (honest) food here. And we loved it! Owners are sweethearts. Food is even sweeter. Must go!
Wow what an experience I definitely recommend them home cooked meal The lamb babotie desert.
Excellent food, wonderful hospitality, life-long friends! A must with every visit.
Amazing food. Great evening.
Fantastic experience. Lovely food. Thank you Theuns and Louis for a very relaxed evening.
It wont make 3 Michelin stars, but gets 5 starts from me. Everything which you want from a stay in the Karoo: simple though refined, friendly and cosy. A lovely experience which we will repeat when we can.
Wonderful evening. Great food.
The place to go for a lovely plate of boere kos. An experience
Rustic food but hands down the best meal I have EVER had!
Two things all South Africans should do: drive over the Swartberg Pass and eat here.
The food was great and the desert to die for.
An Karoo authentic dining experience, with a talented and experienced chef. You shouldnt visit Price Albert without dining at the Karoo Kombuis.
A lovely experience
Best to this place is , every time you come back it is always the same fantastic service and fantastic karoo food . Consistency is one of there success in all this years. A plave to visit if you in Prince Albert
Well prepared peasant food
Wholesome Karoo cooking in a homely and friendly place.
This is truly a little gem in the karoo.
We were recommended. It was just like a normal Sunday meal.
Very good food
Fantastic restaurant. We had vegetable soup to start then roast lamb with roast potatoes, rice and 2 veg with gravy. Lemon pudding and ice cream to finish off the meal. Everything was delicious. Very friendly and cosy place with interesting hats and shoes as the decor. Not a lot of tables and its very popular, so you need to book before you go but you wont be disappointed.
We had a lovely Karoo dinner, very tasty and well prepared! And Denise was a great host! Overall a magic experience, not to miss if you are visiting Prince Albert. Well done guys, created a memory!
Delicious food!!
Delicious traditional South African food, friendly service in a very funky original setting. Nothing more to wish for!!!
From the moment you enter you are whisked away to a completely unique experience, one that I m sure you won t find anywhere else in the world. Food that is top restaurant quality but gives you the nostalgia and comfort and your grandmothers and mothers cooking is what is presented to you, a hearty portion that is so good that eventually you find yourself looking at an empty plate, but don t worry, there is dessert to tie the evening together in a neat little bow. Our three patrons prove that there are still good people in this world. They are the most welcoming and friendly people that make you feel right at home. Nothing is too much too ask. What a fantastic evening.
Absolutely heavenly boerekos - do not miss. Divine home made bread, soup, lamb, Karoo dishes and pudding. Exceptionally interesting and hospitable hosts. A gem!!
Want to make friends? Go & have tasty Boerekos at Karoo Kombuis.
Lovely homecooked South African cuisine in an authentic setting.
Great plain food.
Food very tasty. Decor wierd (my opinion). Cash only operation!!?
Love the local cuisine;)
Unique restaurant in small rooms of an old property full of character. The owners are always in attendance and serve well cooked local dishes. Well recommended. This was our 4th visit.
Please book or you will not get a place. This is a wonderful eating establishment and Denise is a magnificent hostess. Do not eat on the day you visit, or you wont be able to finish all those delicious courses. We will be back, agai and again.
The Karoo Kombuis is Prince Alberts hidden culinary highlight. The host couple takes great care of their guests and you can have a mixed plate of local specialties put together for you. Be sure to try the Babuti! Nothing works here without a reservation, but the hostess of the B&B where you are staying will certainly take care of that. Another important rule: You must bring alcoholic drinks with you, which is expressly desired. We wont forget the perfect evening here.
We had a dinner booking, however the restaurant was closed. Lack of communication from the owners is the reason for the low rating. Maybe next time....?
