Bistro St.Malo is a gem of a restaurant with an inviting, family-style atmosphere that makes you feel right at home. We enjoyed the beef cheek, slow-cooked sous-vide for over 30 hours, and the duck confit—both were extraordinary. The beef was melt-in-your-mouth tender with deep, rich flavors, while the duck was perfectly crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. The warm ambiance and attentive service tied everything together for an exceptional dining experience. A must-visit for anyone who loves incredible food in a cozy, welcoming setting! Will definitely come back. Thanks Phil and Zach!
If you want to be treated like family, while eating some of the best food in Quebec City, do not hesitate to book a table here. The quality of the food is incredible, the chef, Phil, is so talented and so warm. Definitely a night my husband and I will always remember.
I loved this little spot. They have all you can mussels on Wednesday night, which was a great surprise. Our server, megan, was great! Owned by two chefs. The chicken was so so so good, almost sweet. However, I would skip the tartare next time. It was a bit fishy for me. The only “complaint” I can think of. Would love to visit again!
Food was alright, restaurant was very tiny. Sitting by the fireplace, even though it wasn’t on, smelled horrible. There were also two employees sitting at the table behind us that were obviously extremely sick, and coughing everywhere. Our server let us know the one person was the owner. It was so disgusting that we asked to move to a different table. We were first denied that, and after almost leaving, they let us move tables. So gross, will not return after that experience.
We stumbled upon this Bistro for a nightcap and realized that we found a jewel, not just the ambiance but staff as well. The following night, we returned for our last meal before our vacation was over. The food was exquisite, the staff makes you feel like family, and Chef/owner Phillipe is remarkably talented. We had the beef cheeks, pasta carbonara and French onion soup. Camille, who served us - you are a true joy and anyone who meets you will realize this. We can’t recommend this restaurant highly enough!!!
Such a cute and cozy bistro! The staff was attentive even though it was very busy and the food was delicious. We had a French onion soup, seafood stew, beef cheeks and the duck along with a pitcher of sangrias. All the dishes were delightful.
Wonderful experience at this restaurant and the food was very tasty. We ordered the French onion soup (quite a big serving for the starter size), tuna tartare, the seafood stew (amazing!) and the apple tart (so big we couldn't finish it). I would definitely order the soup again and the beef cheek looked amazing too! The food was delicious and we were definitely not hungry after this meal! Service was impeccable and food came out quickly.
We had a wonderful meal in Quebec City and our server Camille was fantastic. Highly recommend this place. I had the cod and my husband had the seafood stew. It is worth staying for dessert as the crème brûlée is delightful. Definitely worth the stop!
Exceptional!! Meals cooked with love and butter... a delight!! Very friendly place, everything was quality.
The service is very poor. You may be treated as a poor person when you eat jeudi cieux. The seats are arranged at the door. The white light outside is so bright that it blinds you. They don t even want to explain the dishes properly. I was in a hurry to leave for 2,580,000 yuan. The food is actually not very tasty. I think its too sweet and the meat is a little too spicy. If you have to choose between this restaurant and 1640, just go to 1640. The service is excellent and the food is better. The male waiters are luckily more polite, but the female ones are really not. The quality of red wine is also poor, very watery, and the impurities in it are not filtered. The white wine is okay, it is the most basic, but it does not have any fruity aroma. The overall experience is quite poor at this price, I really don t recommend it.
Excellent food and Camille was a tremendous server. Our 2nd time here, just as good as the first.
Had so much fun here!! Our waitress was so sweet and all the fun was amazing!!
Really good
Very good food, outstanding atmosphere and service.
Where to start . SUPERB, extra service from Camille, attentive, polite and without fuss. Quality food, really, why didnt I come to this establishment before?!!! Thanks to Phil and phil in the kitchen for this moment, your good humor makes the experience even more pleasant. I will come back and in good numbers for sure.
Perfect restaurant for authentic French food. The service was amazing and the ambiance cozy. Highly recommend!
Simply excellent!
Wonderful evening at this lower town gem. Our server Camille was kind and welcoming, with great recommendations and lots of patience with our party which included two first time parents, their 5-month old baby, and the child s grandmother. The preparation and presentation of our meal, especially the cassoulet and the onion soup, were outstanding. Special thanks to the whole kitchen crew who are clearly exceptionally skilled and passionate about serving delicious, honest food with humour and grace. Truly something special to serve such outstanding food without becoming self-serious or pompous about it. No one was too busy to make funny faces at the baby from the kitchen pass or set a dancing Santa up on the bar for him to watch. Thanks again for a wonderful night, we will be back as soon as we can.
I had a pleasant outing at Bistro St-Malo this summer 2024. The terrace is really welcoming for enjoying a good meal. The dishes were plentiful and perfectly suited my tastes. In addition, the quality of flavors and the choice offered are simply excellent. An address to recommend without hesitation!
We went on a food tour of Quebec and our guide recommended St. Malo. We were not disappointed. We ordered the Moules Marinière et Frites - Trés Délicieux. They were as good as any we had in Brussels and we consider theirs to be the best. The service was friendly, helpful, and professional and the prices were reasonable for that area of Quebec.
Good food good service:) Camille and the other staff are very nice and helpful, had a trés bien experience here! Food
Its so delicious here and the atmosphere is nice. The service is great too. French onion soup is delicious Be sure to eat bread and butter too. The waiter was also very friendly.
Frankly, I recommend +++ Quality of dishes, excellent atmosphere. The sangria is really good. Camille who served us really takes care of the customers. In short, I love it!!! Dont forget to book, this type of precious place obviously attracts a lot of people.
Great experience
Ive been there twice already and Im going back! The dishes are plentiful and very good! What more can I say than this is a favorite restaurant to discover!!!
Wow, great evening at Bistro St-Malo! The food was excellent, the service incredible and the atmosphere warm and friendly! Thank you Phil & Phil & your staff!
Incredible evening!! The Phil burger and the beef cheek poutine, the best Ive eaten!! Wow!! Phil and Phil so generous!!Thank you!!!
Thanks again to the entire Bistro team. Perfect food, great team. I just cant wait to see you again!!!!
I waited for 10minutes for the seat, the waiter didn t come out even though there were many empty seats.
This was our favorite experience / meal in QC. Its a must with reservations as we saw them turning people away left and right w/o one. Its a quaint restaurant - with an outside seating and upstairs. We sat downtstairs and loved the atmosphere. For drinks - we got the Pinot Noir and it was delicious. I had several glasses of it! For food - we started with the mussels. They had 5 different flavors and we did the mustard / cheese one and asked for bread to dip in the sauce. It was delicious - that sauce! I then had the Octopus Limencello and my husband had the Carbonaro (which used a similar sauce as the Mussels). I loved the salad that came with the octopus and I snuck a few bites of the rich pasta. It was a great meal and I would recommend the restaurant.
This place may have been the star of our trip. They run a special on Thursdays, where you get a entrée and a beer for around 30 bucks. My wife had carbonara and I had a duck casserole, both were extremely good. The staff were really nice and we had a great time at the restaurant.
Magnificent evening. Beautiful atmosphere with French music in the background. Delicious dishes, tasty fries and impeccable service from Camille. Thanks to the whole kitchen team. It is wise to make a reservation if you want to enjoy this culinary gem of old Quebec.
Restaurant was closed!
Charming place, very pleasant staff, the terrace is lovely and the dishes are delicious. The seafood is delicious! I recommend and above all I will come back.
Very nice pasta
We discovered this restaurant and we are delighted. The cuisine is refined, very generous: we really enjoyed it. The waitresses are very pleasant. We recommend this place to discover very good French dishes.
Great cozy restaurant in the lower city. The escargot and canard are amazing. Our waitress was awesome, and the beer was cold. Merci beaucoup!
A great time and a great meal there. The servers are very pleasant, smiling and professional. If you want to eat French food while listening to French music this is the ideal place!! I recommend.
Megan was a doll !!
Disgusting food, impeccable service with Camille and the whole team. Everything is sua check
Perfect. I recommend this restaurant for an excellent meal. Extra service. Good atmosphere.
Excellent waitress. Very tasty meal
Phenomenal food, and good amount of it too. Waiter was very helpful. Really really recommend the crème brûlée
It is the best restaurant I have visited in Quebec City. The food, service and atmosphere were excellent! I highly recommend going to that place, we were very well received!
A small restaurant in a place away from the tourist hubbub of the Old Town, although it has places inside that need thorough cleaning, it is a pleasant and cozy place. The menu is typical of any French restaurant in Europe and all the dishes we tried were delicious; I especially recommend the cheek and the Fillet Mignon, exquisite. The charming and attentive service; Zacarí and Andrea were great waiters. The price is somewhat high but it is well worth it.
Very nice experience Parking: Enough parking space Food : 5/5 |
The food was spectacular, as was the service by Zach, and the the GSM wine.
Huge portions of food, great service, great prices
Absolutely worst service I ve ever experienced.
The worst white-biased store I ever experienced. The two of us arrived at the restaurant around 6pm, and even though there were empty seats, we were told it was full, so we waited outside in the heavy rain. After that, two Chinese boys came and were told that the place was full, so they left. After that, a white family of three came and their daughter went inside, and they chatted with the parents who were waiting outside, saying that the place was full, and they confirmed that they didnt have a reservation. Then, to my surprise, my daughter was shown to a seat where she could talk with the clerk. I was so surprised that when I told the clerk, he said he couldnt see us waiting in front of the store with white parents. Are we invisible? I was surprised at how harsh the response was. Its a shame that stores like this still exist. I checked other reviews and it seems like there are many similar cases, so I hope this review will be helpful to others.
What an all encompassing delight of a dining experience. 10/10 across the board. Camille, our server, had the best recommendations. The food and wine were exceptional. Try the beef cheek! Make a reservation! Spend all of your money here.
Ohlala the service I received here was extraordinary!! The lady (waitress) who works there was nice, friendly, welcoming and professional! She always knew what I needed! 5 stars are not enough for them, they need at least 10 stars!
The dishes are excellent and the service attentive. The decor is not to my taste and did not reflect the finesse of the dishes served in my opinion but in the end what matters is what you have on the plate!
We spent 3 days in Quebec and had many a good meal, but the one at Bistro St. Malo was the best. The Beef Cheek Bourguignonne was so tender and flavorful with a delicious gravy. The root vegetables were well cooked and still had just the right amount of crunch in them. I had to order the bread so I could sop up every bit of gravy on my plate. My wife had the Seafood Stew and was just as pleased. The staff was very helpful in recommending what to order. Service was cheerful and friendly. We will definitely return the next time we visit Quebec.
In the lower Old Town. Large portions and authentic French. The boudin noir was moist and flavorful. I would go back there every time in the city.
I was looking to have a special meal while in old Quebec City. I thought of having something with duck confit, but was happily diverted, by my server Andrea, to try a seafood stew instead. Ragoût de la Mer. It contained only seafood, unlike some places where they add potatoes and other fillers. Andrea helped pair my meal with a glass of Sauvignon blanc that made the stew that much more special. Lastly, she tempted me with dessert, which I didn t think I had room for, but found it, especially as it was one of my favourites - creme brûlée! It was the softest and silkiest of creams and the caramel thick and crunchy. I ve found most creme brûlées are more like custard, but this one was thick delicious cream, made with amaretto. This meal was a bit of a splurge, but so worth it. On top of else, I had an outdoor table and felt as if I was in Paris again.
Camille is super nice and very intentional, very big thank you to the whole team, we will see each other again next week for the vintage weekend
We stopped for appetizers and cocktails late afternoon. All delicious and our waitress was so sweet! We sat outside on this charming street.
Fabulous and delicious discovery. Already looking forward to going back. Thank you Philippe! Thank you Philippe! Thank you Camille!
Very friendly atmosphere and delicious and generous dishes which are prepared with great care. Really a great discovery!
The restaurant was nice and service was good but the food was just average. The seafood soup lacked seasoning and the cassoulet was very salty.
We stopped for a drink, but thanks to our waitress (Florence), we ate and drank more than necessary!
A charming little bistro with a warm atmosphere and generous and delicious food!!!
A simply extraordinary meal, in a magical place with attentive staff (mention to Camille and Zachary). Big favorite!
Supreme attention, Andrea is very nice, the food is delicious and the place is very comfortable, it doesnt matter your language, she is attentive, we enjoyed it a lot, highly recommended
The Best Meal we had in Quebec City!! A must go for anyone. Make a reservation to ensure you can be seated, worth the preplanning. Best seafood stew have ever had. It was filled with ever possible seafood you could want; shrimp, clams, mussels, scallops, salmon, white fish. Just amazing. The sauce was perfect. Every part of it was perfection. Had the carrot soup to begin and that as well was beautiful. The staff was so nice and attempted. No issues communicating in English if needed, but we are bilingual. Will come again for sure when I visit Quebec City again. ~~~ The best meal we had in Quebec! A must for everyone. Book to ensure youre seated, its worth booking in advance. The best seafood stew we have ever had. It was filled with every possible seafood imaginable; shrimp, clams, mussels, scallops, salmon, white fish. Simply incredible. The sauce was perfect. Everything was perfect. I had the carrot soup to start and it too was magnificent. The staff was very kind and attentive. No problem communicating in English if necessary, but we are bilingual. I will definitely come back when I visit Quebec City again.
Delicious moules and paté, laid back with excellent service. Feels off the tourist path. Wonderful evening.
The food and service were one of my most memorable french dining experiences. Every course was perfect. Best onion soup of my life!
What a find! We stumbled upon Saint Malo and couldn t have been happier. Our server Mathilde was so personable and friendly with the children as well. The seafood stew was delicious and so was the confit de canard and tarte tatin. Highly recommend if you re in Quebec City. Food : 5/5 |
Really excellent first experience
Lovely Bistro with a great menu of French favourites. Staff fluent in English and French. They even give you the opportunity to practice your French and help out, which was lovely Cocktails, beer and non alcoholic beverages as well as wine. I great experience.
We enjoyed our meals, which were tasty and well prepared. However, the experience could have been improved with warmer service.
Nice atmosphere, especially upstairs. Beautiful terrace during sunny days. Interesting unlimited fries formula. Choice of interesting dishes, fusion cuisine between typical French dishes and Quebec flavors.
Excellent service. Very good value for money. We will return there. Very kind.
Delicious duck leg!
Price way too high and check your bill a glass of wine $50 instead of $12
Extremely discriminatory! We are Indians and were not allowed to eat here. That is incorrect! We were offered tables by the servers, as they were available and then refused the same tables by the chef. Please revisit your service policies. Service : 1/5
Update: the restaurant is justifying itself in response to my comment however this does not change the way we were abruptly treated. As we can see these people are ready to call their customers liars and want to have the last word. Original: The food is good although very expensive. Our experience was unfortunately tarnished by the owner who served the tables and who was abrupt with us. I second the comments on the complicated assignment of tables and reservations on the terrace. Flexibility and gentleness would have been appreciated.
Amazing food...Zak was awesome!
Today my wife and I were seated on the patio eating lunch, when we saw a non-white family of 8 with 4 kids and a dog come ask for a table on the patio. They were offered two separate tables of 4 by the nice hostesses outside , which they accepted. Then suddenly a man from the inside rushed out to tell them to leave as the chef said There is no room for you Just wow!! Horrible to see this In Canada in 2024. Stay away!
Very nice atmosphere! Very nice terrace! The dishes are incredible. 10/10
The beef cheek is exquisite, I recommend 100%
This restaurant is perfect for moments with family or friends. The employees always have a smile and are committed to providing us with a good experience. Very good and beautiful dishes that make us want to come back. THANKS!
Great team! Everyone is very kind and welcoming which completes a great dining experience Thank you Bistro St Malo for this great discovery
Warm place, great service from each of the employees we met during our visit! The American dollars we signed give us a real sense of belonging to the restaurant, we will return there every chance we get! Thank you all for your wonderful welcome!
Very nice experience. The food is excellent. The service is excellent. The music is excellent and the service is second to none. The portions are big and the price is super affordable. I highly recommend it to you.
A very delicious meal, extraordinary service with the waitress Camille, smiling, helpful, wow, I highly recommend
Delicious food great service
Went a few times and everything I ate was delicious ! You absolutely need to try this restaurant if youre in the area, you wont regret it ! Service is impeccable and very friendly. One of the best restaurants in Quebec city for sure
Amazing and delicious food! One of the best Foie gras melt in your mouth, we had to order twice! Steak is well cooked and seasoned, chicken and sweetbread are all well prepared. Lovely and friendly staff! Highly recommended!
Bistro St-Malo is a magical place. The atmosphere is nice and the food is excellent. The service is exceptional and professional. It is a culinary experience that you absolutely must have.
Very nice experience! Delicious food. Exceptional and very warm service from Andrea. Relaxed terrace atmosphere: we would have cried out to Brittany! Try the cod: the dish is tasty and absolutely divine!
Amazing and unique place. Thank you to our two waitresses Alycia and Andréa for the remarkable service. I recommend this place to anyone who wants an extraordinary culinary experience with great waitresses.
Great plates! Sea stew, not to be missed! Very good attentive service.
Food was amazing, service was great. Camille our server was super helpful and friendly ... We will definitely go back on our next trip to Quebec
Without reservations, we were warmly welcomed by Camille. Dinner on the terrace, unlimited mussels accompanied by a good Pinot Grigio, very nice atmosphere. Camille was flawless, really friendly and attentive. We will definitely return
Owning a restaurant hundreds of meters away, gotta admit the foie gras oignon soup is best than mine Enjoy this local gem and make yourself home in Phils cozy bistro.
Decent french food and service was fast and they even toasted my bread upon request. Service in general was ok. Not exceptional food for its high price though. Ok if close by.
very good lunch
Andrea was very friendly ..we were a little warm in the sun and she was happy to let us move too! Vegetarian options: Omelette was very good!
Very rude hostess. We couldn t be sat because they didn t have enough chair .
10/10 had an amazing dinner here with my partner. Food was amazing! Service was excellent!! Camille was wonderful, we had a wonderful evening! Will be back again !!
Everything about here is amazing. Camille is wonderful so attentive and cheerful, thank you for making my dinner date memorable.
Andrea was excellent!
The waitress Camille is extremely kind and polite, good food, superb evening with friends
We both ordered the 1/2 roasted chicken dinner with French fries. It was outstanding. Succulent and moist. And the portion was enormous. The mussel appetizer was OK as was the escargot. The Pinot Noir wine they served was from 2023 and not ready to be served. Would go back for the chicken since it might have been the best single dish we had in our four days in the city.
Camille is truly extraordinary. We had such a lovely evening. We are definitely going to come back!
Struggled to decide what to have for dinner because, honestly, everything on the menu looks incredible. Ended up with a French onion soup and tuna tartare starter, both fantastic. For mains, I had the beef cheek, and no word of a lie, beef will never taste the same again to me. It was without question, the best beef Ive ever tasted. 30 hour sous vide for the win. My family also had the cassoulet (duck leg was pretty special) and carbonara (bonus points for the quail egg). Im not going to say that we drove all the way from Ottawa just to eat here, but I will say that when I get a craving for beef cheek - which is bound to happen now that Ive tasted the beef of the gods - this place will be worth the drive. Camille also gets bonus points for knowing exactly how much wine one needs (i.e. more) and being a lovely server.
The unlimited mussels are excellent! Camille is very warm and attentive. We had a great time.
During a visit to Quebec last week, my husband and I had dinner at this restaurant. It was the best meal we had during our stay. When we arrived we were initially assigned a table next to a speaker. The music was too loud for us.They immediately gave us another table where we could hear the lovely music they were playing (mostly French) and still be able to have a conversation. The steak frites I had and the seafood stew my husband had were delicious, well seasoned and nicely presented, as well as the tarte tatin we shared for dessert. I wanted to have a glass of red wine with dinner but was not familiar with any of the wines on their list. Our server asked me to describe the kind of wine I like and, based on that, she recommended one from Spain, which was perfect. The ambiance of this place was very hospitable. Our server was exceptional. We look forward to our next visit.
Excellent French bistro with well executed cocktails and French classic dishes. Everyone ordered a different dish (boudin, canard confit, cassoulet, joue de b uf, ris de veau, crème brûlée, Tartarin, etc.) and all were greatly satisfied. Tasty generous potions, friendly service in a cozy yet quirky atmosphere. Overall great evening appreciated by all. Un gros merci à toute l équipe!
One of my favorite restaurants I recommend it to everyone!
This is my third visit and I am not disappointed each time! Camille was a very good waitress
Wonderful! Impeccable service...Thank you Camille. A bistro that sings us happiness! See you soon!
Amazing restaurant and service! We love Zach! Food
Great food and service. Had escargots as an entree which was delicious. Moules frites was also perfect. My sons octopus was just a little overcooked but I was glad they had the Entre Deux Mers wine from France that I love. Excellent service going out of their way to find us a place even though it was quite busy. Make a reservation to be sure not to miss it. Nice sitting outside. Vegetarian options: Moules frites were excellent
The pasta goes perfectly with the bitterness and fat, recommends without hesitation Food
Food was DELICIOUS. The service was amazing and the space is wonderful. No complaints and I would highly recommend to all!
It s great and Mathilde is very patient!
Excellent evening and wonderful attention from Martine!! Many thanks!
Very good food, charming employees. To discover!
We loved the excellent service from our waitress Mégane, the food was perfect, thanks to the 2 chefs, very warm place. Super welcoming staff, super friendly owner, it was our first experience and not the last, I think it will even become a habit. I highly recommend this restaurant without hesitation. Dont forget to book in advance, especially for the all-you-can-eat mussels special on Wednesday! Everything was IMPECCABLE to make our first experience unforgettable! Overall I give it a 5 *****
Beautiful atmosphere, great service, impeccable quality food and the owners are very friendly
Very good French restaurant in the Old Port with fast and friendly service. The portions are large and very tasty. I had the sea stew and the beef carpaccio, both very good. I plan to come back to try their all-you-can-eat mussel Wednesdays
St. Malo was a great find. It was our second choice and should have been our first. Matilde was a very helpful server and her meal recommendations were perfect. Try the blond beer and casserole with duck confit, sausage, and beans. Kid-friendliness: Many young kids there
There is no better place to dine in Quebec. The beef cheeks are outstanding. And the onion soup better than in France (sorry to say so ). Thanks to Mathilde for her kind service. We have to come back for the reverse apple pie which unfortunately we missed this time.
Camille was absolutely perfect!
Second year that I call and I am told that they do not take reservations on the terrace. Second time I arrive, I see tables of two available on the terrace and I am told that they are reserved. Please decide, do you take reservations on the terrace or not? Stop misleading your potential customers. THANKS.
Food was delicious! Everything was extremely tasty and good portions. My only complaint and the reason for 4* is the wine pours were so small that I thought it was a mistake! When I ordered my second glass, I mentioned something but the server said this was normal?!?! I dine out often enough that it seemed like maybe 4 oz. Perhaps I would recommend a bottle if we dined here again since this seemed so unreasonable. The steak, cod and French Onion soup were excellent. Otherwise the restaurant was very good!
Excellent food. Fun staff! Mathilde was fantastic!!! Highly recommend.
Everything was perfect. We started with escargots, mussels, and French onion soup. Then we shared the duck and chicken which were both prepared so so well. Duck was definitely a top 2 for me having eaten duck at many restaurants. Not a lot of seating inside but very special decor. For lunch, just two staff and one chef. Made us feel at home.
Extraordinary restaurant, good and relaxed! A well-hidden gem in Quebec!
Thanks to Camille for this welcome. These meal suggestions were perfect. Yum for the sea stew!
Very good restaurant good services we loved going back
Beef cheek was 4.5 out of 5. Very tender but perhaps not too flavorful. Duck confit tasted like one of those turkey legs in Disney world. Oversalted, artificially red and precooked in bulk. Costco precooked duck leg tastes better. It is 2.5 out of 5. Side salad was 5 out of 5. IPA beer is also amazing. Tastes more like Belgian wheat with minimal bitternes . Service and environment are all gvery good.
Really good classic French bistro cuisine cooked with delicacy and generosity. When the plates arrive at the table, they make you smile with pleasure before you even dip your fork in them! The service is friendly and attentive, everything happens at the right time. We are definitely going back!
Great Service with Camille, very good wine that smells like a girl!
Great waitress and good dry extra olive martini
Everything is perfect. The coffee is fabulous.
The service was fast and food was delicious!
Everything was great! Delicious mussels and excellent fries! The impeccable service...I dream of returning there as soon as possible!
Very nice staff. Unfortunately the quality of food diminished considerably from our visit a few years ago. In particular the cassoulet did not seem to be prepared in the same way suggested on the menu. It was incredible the first time, and disappointingly mediocre this time
Super cozy place! The food was divine! The carbonara was absolutely amazing! Camille was our waitress & as busy as it was- she was super attentive. Highly recommend & we may just go back again before we leave for Montreal.
We walked into the sidewalk seating area with our dog, and a server told us hed be with us in a minute. A little while later and he said hed get to us soon. Finally, he had time. How many? Two This way, but we dont allow dogs. Okayyyyy... Totally the restaurants prerogative to not allow dogs, but Im just putting this story here in case anyone else mistakenly assumes (like us) that dogs would be allowed in the outdoor seating area (like just about every other restaurant Ive been to with an outdoor seating area). Maybe divide the outdoor area into dogs and no dogs? If people are looking for a quiet dog-free refuge though, it seems like a bit of an odd location, since its on a busy pedestrian street crammed between two other restaurants (which very well might allow dogs for all I know). Had really wanted to try the food, but obviously didnt get a chance to eat here, so leaving 3 stars so I dont unduly wreck its rating. Dinging it a bit for having to wait so long just to be told they dont allow dogs though, that was annoying. [EDIT below in response to the owner] 1. In case it wasnt clear when I wrote, we walked into the sidewalk seating area, we were walking by and decided to see if we could get a table. If Im walking by, why on earth would I want to then stop outside and call, rather than asking in person? 2. As literally stated in my original review, I left the review so that others can hopefully avoid making the same mistake as us. Simply calling to inform the restaurant of our frustration would not be of the same use for people. But to be fair, I wasnt going to give the restaurant a 1-star rating just for having a no-dog policy (which is its right). I started with 4, since at the time of my review it had a 4.7 rating, and took off a star for the frustrating interaction with the staff.
Really excellent French food with great service.
My wife and two kids were visiting Quebec City and stayed at a loft nearby and based on the positive reviews, we opted to visit on the evening of July 2nd. Understanding that we had no reservation, I went in and asked how long it would be for a table. The gentlemen who was a server/host said it would be 30-45 minutes. Fair enough, we left and decided to evaluate what other options we had in the neighborhood. We decided that Bistro St-Malo would be the best option given what was immediately around the area. I returned and saw the same waiter/host walk in. I asked about putting our name down for when a table would be ready to which he fairly rudely responded We dont take names and Im way too busy to track people down. I said, okay Ill wait to which he acted surprised that we would wait. I decided after a few minutes that if this was their best impression then we should look elsewhere. How would he know if the wait was 30-45 minutes if he didnt keep a waitlist? Did he just make it up? Why would he be surprised by someone waiting for a table at the restaurant if they werent going to keep a waitlist or were too busy to find a customer? There was no suggestion on where would be best to wait since hes too busy. The server/host from that evening did a disservice to the restaurant and if the reviews about the quality of the restaurant are accurate (which I believe they are), the gentlemen working that evening does not reflect that quality.
It s always a wonderful experience, both culinary and for the impeccable service. Little touches that even go unnoticed. The waitress answers your questions and we only notice when she leaves that the water and wine have been refilled. Even the chefs go out to bring the meals when the servers are called elsewhere. The Carpaccio is stunning and falls apart with a fork just the way you like it and the sea stew is full of flavors. Thank you Florence for the golden service and to the chef too
Warm and welcoming. Arranged one for us indoors at the bar when a rain storm rolled by. Good food
What a lovely evening we spent at Bistro St Malo. Camille offered us 5-star service: Very attentive, efficient and exceptional friendliness. Wow, thank you very much Camille. And what about the dishes offered: top quality food, generous plates, beautiful presentations, and above all very very good. Without forgetting the pleasant atmosphere. Thank you Phil, thank you Camille and thank you to the whole team. Josée and Daniel.
Excellent food and service. My belly is happy
Loved it here Dietary restrictions: Allergic to dairy & the chef was very accommodating. All our meals were delicious & service was top notch! Food : 5/5 |
Extraordinary dinner! Service beyond impeccable and the meal was delicious! Thank you Andréa for the more than perfect service!
Pleasantly surprised to discover this afternoon the reopening of the Bistro during lunch hours on Thursdays and Fridays. 4 women fully satisfied with the excellent service received and the very good taste and quality of our meals! Fast service and very hot and fresh meals.
Everything was perfect
Stopped in for drinks and appetizers. Wonderful!
Rue St-Paul: an atmosphere that invites you to share with succulent food: tuna tartare, snails au gratin or seafood stew followed by a tasty apple dessert covered with maple syrup caramel. ..Divine . All with the impeccable service of Andrea and Camille, an experience to be repeated!
Camille made our experience wonderful!
Perfect time, everything was delicious and Andrés service excellent! We will come back very soon
Had a great dinner here while visiting the city. Food was very good, service and ambience were lovely
It was by pure chance that the owner-chef welcomed us to the service this evening even though we had made the wrong day when booking a group of 6 for our professional team meeting. We were welcomed as if we were at his home and made us laugh with his authentic and straightforward verve. The tartare is excellent and the desserts are very generous!
Lovely authentic place
A sincere Wow! What a wonderful evening spent at this bistro! In addition to excellent food, Phil served us impeccably!
We enjoyed our visit to Bistro St-Malo. Camille is an excellent server. She showed equal attention to both the locals and tourists on a busy evening. We would go back again.
Lovely music, very attentive and accommodating staff. Great food! So fun! Kid-friendliness: The kindest and most attentive staff with our two girls. Very accommodating and their attention to serve us and make us feel at home was superb! Food : 5/5 |
Amazing Florence
Lord have mercy! Saturday brunch (or lunch?) was beyond my expectations . Come hungry; the decadent options are more than enough. Delicious, fantastic courteous service ( Merci Andrea) AND the soundtrack was perfect: Plenty of Edith Piaf. On top of it all it was a beautiful day, and I got to sit outside and people watch. Serious food for food snobs like me.
Very good service, the meal was excellent
Delicious casserole!!
Beautiful atmosphere and great service!
Fun, charming location. Food was delicious, and the service provided by Andrea was fantastic. Highly recommended.
The waitress was amazing, she was the only person serving and she was quick and maintained a happy demeanour throughout. Well done and thank you
Thank you Andrea for your excellent service. The food was delicious and we had a great time on the terrace
We had excellent service and a wonderful birthday dinner celebration for my husband. I would say the best meal we had the entire weekend in Quebec. I would highly recommend coming here.
Really disappointed. The restaurant is definitely overrated. Not recommended for tourist. The man work there was really nice and good. However, I got service with the lady. She is terrible. I came first but she put the priority for other table. While having the dishes, I was chilling at the moment, and trying to enjoy with the moules. I have not finish the dishes yet, she is rushing me to have main, it is 2 hours before the restaurant close... She take all the things out of table, includes the napkin, the cutlery..... after having the moules my hand was really greasy, I do not have any napkins. I am not sure is she new or not happy with her life. Terrible experience, now I have to find another restaurant to have main dishes :) This restaurant is very dirty, the shellfish drain was not cleaned properly, and there was sand in the food... The service of the woman was terrible, I dont think it was like going to Hong Kong for tea, the menu was difficult to drink. Drinks are expensive and completely rubbish. It s not easy to wash away money wasted... It s just a restaurant for ghosts and tourists.
Beef cheek was amazing. But their apple pie tartin was pure bliss
This place was lovely!! Camille gave excellent service with a smile and the meats had the most amazing rubs and were so tender. Best fries in town!
Service hors pair!
Belle mange!! Hubby and I had a beautiful time here. Best messes in old QC in my opinion. Great service and atmosphere. Highly recommend!
All positive experience.
The fries and mussels are delicious and the service is impeccable!
Great find! Inviting both the server and the food. Quaint and delicious Merci Food : 5/5
Great atmosphere and extremely friendly service. The food was large portion for the amount that was paid. Very casual French eatery. We came after visiting Quebec City and this is conveniently located in Old Quebec City and walkable from most attractions. The food did take a while, but the place also filled up really quickly. Everything tasted great and would definitely swing by in the future if we re ever in the area.
Wonderful!!!!! A true gem in old Quebec City.
Excellent... Nothing else to say than Excellent in all respects: cuisine, welcome, service, menu,.... See you soon
Met the owner and him and his staff are meant to be in this industry! Wonderful experience!
If i could give 10 stars I would! The food was amazing fresh, an exquisite combination of flavors whether an appetizer or main meal. And don t forget the Chef s apple dessert creation. We were scraping the plate to enjoy every morsel. Chef Phil waited on us this evening. He is humorous and so genuine. He took a picture with us at the end as you can see below. Truly the best culinary and social experience we had the three days we spent in Quebec City.
4.5 stars, Only food that could be a little better. The steak was unfortunately not to my liking. Thank you for the excellent service. The decor of the ancestral house gives a beautiful character.

Great food and atmosphere! Got the blood pudding & French onion soup Both were excellent!! Food
Onion soup with Foie Gras is amazing. Beef Cheek and the Seafood Stew are must try. Fantastic dining experience.
Its so delicious Duck legs are a bit salty, but good with potatoes or salad. The seafood stew is really crazy, this is the best of the best Today s soup was unique and good. Canadian wine was a gamble, but worth it..!!
Had an awesome dinner! The food and service were amazing! 100% recommended!
Welcoming, friendly atmosphere and staff. The dinner menu and specifically the meat was succulent and well-prepared. Service was prompt and quick; every dish was paired with the perfect sauce, salad, or garnish, and the chef never fails to combine the ideal match of food! We specifically loved the juicy duck leg confit and would urge that anyone should try it. If we ever return to Quebec City, we will definitely visit this place again.
Fantastic meal! Zack, our waiter was an attentive host and an excellent waiter. We ll be back. Believe all the other reviews!!
I was expecting a tourist restaurant with tourist food. I was treated to just the opposite. The food was delicious and a shout out to Camille for her excellent service!
Very good food, impeccable service (thanks to Zac for his aure pert service). An excellent bistro for a good evening and good food.
Super nice experience, excellent food and what service from Camille, we felt like long-time friends.
Once again, after many years, we were greatly satisfied with our evening. Always delicious, Camille our waitress was perfect in her kindness and service. PS: the maple syrup from the owners maple grove is just too good.
Fantastic French bistro food. We both got different rabbit confit dishes. Meat fell right off the bone! Lovely waitress gave us excellent wine pairing recommendations. Finished with the delicious apple tart á la mòde The outdoor seating was great, and there was live music performance in the plaza nearby.
Their mussels are to die for and the atmosphere at this place in unmatched! Love the creativity and craft that went into their patio and our server Zac was first class. Their desert offerings are also worth trying.
Great food, great service, great atmos!! Shout out to Philip, gnome complaints !!
Really enjoyed the food, good atmosphere. Camille was a delight and so helpful
Very warm and welcoming place with friendly service. I ordered beef cheeks, which while tender, were a little bit on a dried out side. My party enjoyed their all-you-can-eat mussels that happened to be the special on that night. Overall, it is rather 4.5 than just 4.
Eight of us had dinner here while visiting Quebec. The food was the best meal we ve had so far in our trip. The service was outstanding, Zach, our server, was exceptional. Highly recommend getting a reservation if you are traveling to Quebec.
Camille is great
The owner Phil (I guess) he is very friendly and nice. When I order the Carbonara he was like Phil that s me! It s our first time trying the French onion soup, it is very tasty and same as Phil Carbonara. In the end, he shake my hand and my partners hand.
Andrea gave us the best service while the food was exquisite as usual. We have bbenn her 5 times and we are coming back in 2 days
Andrea was awesome and the food was great.
One of our tour guides recommended this bistro and it was very good. The French onion soup and steak & frites did not disappoint. Nice informal upscale atmosphere and friendly service.
