34 Rue Saint-Louis, QuΓ©bec, QC G1R 4P3, Canada
This is a special gem in Old Quebec! A quaint piece of history, uniquely decorated for Christmas and has such beautiful character. The meal was lovely and the service was excellent.
Located in downtown Quebec City, this restaurant features traditional quΓ©bΓ©cois cuisine. The house dates back to 1675, and is now a historical landmark. The exterior features a very traditional French house that is painted red and white. The interior walls are decorated with carved art pieces, and the ceiling lights shine through stained glass windows. The lunch special is a very good deal, which comes with a drink, bread and butter, a starter, a main dish, and a dessert. With extra fees you have the choice of upgraded dishes. The Lac St Jean Meat Pie is a unique dish made with bison, deer, elk, beef and pork filling. If youβre down for the culinary adventure, this dish would be the perfect choice during cold days. The crust is buttery, flaky, and pairs well with the meat filling. The tomato fruit sauce on the side is homemade, and you can taste the tomato chunks along with its sweet and sour flavour profile. The maple syrup pie is another one of their signature desserts. The filling is very sweet, but the cream on top is unsweetened, which tones down the sweetness of the syrup. However, if you feel like something fruity, they also have other options such as a blueberry pie. Overall, a nice dinning experience, and the place was not super busy during a Friday late afternoon.
Would give 6 stars if I could! Service was excellent even when the dining area was nearly completely full. Cozy atmosphere with plenty of tables. I ordered the wild game meat pie (tonightβs was red deer, bison & elk). Generous portion! So flavorful, tender, and moist (yes, I know this word is βyuckyβ to some but itβs the best I can think of to describe the meat filling) complimented perfectly by the fruit ketchup. The pie crust was flaky & buttery and expertly proportioned so as to not take over the filling without leaving you wanting for more. The veggie selection was delicious as well. I also ordered a non-alcoholic Bloody Mary that was very tasty. Julien was the server. He was attentive but not intrusive to all of the tables he was serving. Helpful & friendly!
Beautiful atmosphere! Home cooking, delicious and hearty. The pork with three mustard sauce was very tender and flavorful. It came with perfectly cooked vegetables and potatoes. The Cordon Blue was delicious and also served with vegetables and wild rice. The Pea soup and salad with beets were great appetizers.
We heard about this restaurant on our old Quebec Walking Tour and from a friend. It is a unique restaurant featuring an excellent 3 Course Meal and glass of wine or beer for $64.99 (Canadian $). These are full servings. A lot if delicious food. Their white wine and dark beer were each very good. The Pumpkin and Pea Soups were tasty and especially good on this cool day. Entrees of the Meat Pie and the Pork Tenderloin were each delicious. Finishing with the tantalizing desserts of Maple Bread Pudding and Blueberry Pie was terrific. The upstairs is a nice setting for couples.
I'd give 6 stars if I could. A superbly wonderful maiden dining experience for our family - and all thanks to ChatGPT to suggest this as one of our best options to get a true flavor of Quebec City cuisine. We went for the pre-fixed $40 lunch option. We started around 2:30 (super crowded!) and were there until about 4:30, by when most of the restaurant was empty. I highly recommend reservations. For starters - our table of 4 went for a poutine, wild meat cretons, meat pie, and the escargots. The meat cretons were very close to a pate. The escargots were delicious. The poutine and the pie were also highly appreciated at our table. I skipped the house wine and instead went with a recipe I looked up on their own recipe book that was for sale at the reception - called the Homemade Caribou, 1 oz vodka in 2 oz of Canadian sherry. It was smooth as silk, loved it! For main courses our table had Lac St-Jean meat pie (bison, deer, elk, beef, pork), Beef Wellington, The Three Tenderlions Grilled (deer, bison, and elk), and the Chef's inspiration (today it was veal pieces in a raspberry-infused sauce). I can't tell which one was the best as they were all competing with each other in freshness, taste, visual appeal. Dessert was split between the pies and the creme brulee. No bad choices here. Our 2-hour lunch never felt rushed - and we never felt ignored either. Our waitress was polite, efficient, and eager to help when we had questions about the options. A true lovely dining experience - highly recommend!
This restaurant offers traditional Quebec cuisine, with dishes like poutine and meat pie delivering the expected authentic flavors. It's highly recommended for those looking to experience traditional-style cooking. Besides the food, the decor and dining environment are also impressive. The building and wall paintings appear to have many years of history, and the classic menus and plates enhance the dining experience. Additionally, the service is very elegant, and the prices are reasonable, ensuring you leave satisfied and not hungry.
Food is great and our waiter was very nice! We had lunch here and it was $39 for drink, appetizer, main, and dessert. Simple great deal! I loved meat pie and maple caramel bread pudding! Our waiter was very kind and explained each dish. The place was like a little old house with cozy feeling. Would love to come back here again if I visit Quebec City in the future!
It was only ok. The maple syrup pie was delicious though.
had a dream about the maple bread pudding the night after ingesting it
We had an amazing three course meal with the selection of a beer or glass of wine for an amazing price of 39.50 if ordered before 5pm. This is the place to dine in old Quebec City where the food is delicious & decor is very warm & cozy & the service is welcoming. Great vegetarian & vegan options and vast meat choices. This restaurant will be our go to place when visiting this historic city. Very close to the chateau Frontenac on the same street - just look for the restaurant with the red roof.
Cozy atmosphere, home-cooked meals and great service in the heart of the old city. Really enjoyed the table haute ($40 and up), which included a glass of wine, starter, Chef s Inspiration (Christmas dinner with all the fixings) and the best bread pudding I ve ever tasted. Vegetarian options: Pescatarian options (fish)
Expensive but we knew that and I recommend it.
This was the best meal I had 7-day trip to Montreal and Quebec. It was suggested to us by our tour guide. The food was superb, especially the maple pie!
We loved this restaurant. The food was delectable. Such a cozy, comfortable atmosphere with lovely welcoming staff. Will eat here next trip for sure.
Tried it for lunch, a characteristic place which for the modest price of $39.95 allows the choice of 1 starter, 1 main course, 1 dessert, 1 glass of wine or beer. Very good and tasty dishes, exquisite desserts. Attentive and punctual service. Absolutely recommended.
Food is not bad. Was expecting more for what I paid. The waitress can be a little rude.
It was amazing! The appetizer, main and dessert were delicious The customer service was great and we had an amazing moment there! Food : 5/5
Perfect rustic Canadian french restaurant- Get the French Onion soup and the Beef Wellington. Charming cozy interior with exposed stone walls and a fireplace.
A restaurant in a historical building serving traditional Quebecois meals. It was such a great pleasure to be able to eat here and have this experience. Very charming and a must go when in Quebec City.
The interior was cozy and had a home-like atmosphere, and the food was very delicious and friendly, and even the desserts were excellent. I think I gave a lot because I dont know much about Canadas tipping culture, but I was that satisfied. I 100% intend to visit again.
This is my favorite restaurant in all of Canada. Try the Bison Bourguignon with blueberry and white wine sauce. It s delicious, and a good portion.
Salmon coulibiac was great (it was better a couple years ago). Best French onion soup, hands down.
Do not recommend. Not worth the price at all. Very overpriced tourist trap. Food is mediocre. Maple pie was good. Since when is a fondue croquette? Bourginion was bland.
I rarely review anything unless it sparked some emotion - good or bad. For this one unfortunately it s ABUSIVELY OVER PRICED. Service is good - no matter how good can t sugar-coat bland food especially at their price point. Please do try the maple pie - I would come back just for that a lone and SHARE it with my partner.
The staff helpful, attentive & friendly Must visit @ next Quebec s trip
Ive wanted to eat at Aux Anciens ever since my first trip to Quebec City more than 30 years ago. This trip, I finally had the chance ... and I should have saved my money. The interior is lovely and cozy and everything Id hoped for. The food and service were ... not. Our waiter was efficient enough, but the thinly veiled misogynistic jokes were not appreciated. I lost count of how many cracks he made about whether I allowed my husband to do this, that, and the other. He was not funny. Food-wise, my husband and I both had the lunchtime table dhote. We both ordered the soup of the day, which was a lovely cream of broccoli served with warm bread. For the main, my husband had the chicken cordon bleu. It contained an almost invisible slice of ham, no cheese, and was dry. He said the boxed version you can buy at Costco was a thousand times better. His side veggies were tasteless mush. I ordered the salad with grilled goat cheese and marinated beets. Presentation was gorgeous ... the meal itself was not. The cheese was super salty (and tasted of nothing else), the beets were boiled and had maybe been shown a marinade but certainly never touched one, and if there was a dressing of any kind, it was well, well hidden. So yes, underwhelmed would be an understatement. Aux Anciens was worth neither the anticipation nor the price. We will never go back, and I cannot recommend.
Downstairs is more lively than upstairs.
The place is charming and offers several typical dishes. However, I find that the quality of the dishes is not up to par with the price paid.
Party of eight, very enjoyable meal. Cordial and knowledgeable staff. Quick service and tasty dishes, mostly on the heavier side. Interesting, historic building.
Good food, good service. Unique nice atmosphere. $39,99 meals, drink, appetizer, entrΓ©e dessert . Did see and hear servers explain certain items raise the bill $4, $8 etc. Never ordered items with higher cost, nothing ever mentioned, bill over $ 60.
Returned to the Old Canadiens after 42 years (1982). A beautiful nostalgia sequence in a timeless restaurant.
Fabulous restaurant in Old Quebec. I believe on the outside of the building a marker plate dated it to 1675. Food and service were exceptional. Highly recommended!
A historic place and restaurant with traditions and class. One of the few places where you can find traditional Quebecois dishes in a very good, almost home-made interpretation. We were very impressed. We recommend.
Atmosphere is lovely and rustic, service is friendly and attentive. The food was decent, but should be better for the price mark.
The food was excellent and the servers were adorable!
Poutine is a must try
Update Oct 25th, 2024: My parents still go here every time they are in QC. The atmosphere and decor havent changed a bit, which is a great thing. The portions are still huge given how traditional the food is which is another way to say heavy and a lot of butter. So filling. So delicious. Original: Such a unique spot. From the architecture outside and the iconic red roof, to the slightly cramped, yet cozy decor inside, it really does stay true to its name. Literally translated to at the ancient Canadians, it was like walking into an old world cabin decorated by everyones favourite grandparents. The service was spectacular and the food was good. The Quebec Meat Pie had such a flaky and buttery crust and the meatball side packed such a powerful punch of flavour. The Pumpkin Soup was so light and needed a bit of salt, but overall nice and the crème brûlée was spectacular. It doesnt look caramelized, but it was and had a nice crunchy top shell.
The staff at the store were very nice and kind. You can eat Quebec cuisine, so I think its a good meal for sightseeing. Dinner is a little expensive for me, so I think its better to have it for lunch.
Described as one of the oldest restaurants in Canada, we had the opportunity to dine here as part of our tour of QuΓ©bec city. The ambience was great and it had a certain aged feel to it. The outfits of the waitress stemmed from a period past and this gave the restaurant an authentic feel. I tried duck for the first time here and I enjoyed it. It was part of my poutine. I strongly recommend this establishment.
Amazing food !!!! The escargot, the duck poutine and the pie!!!! Amazing !!!!
Very pleasant meal at a not excessive price. A friendly and attentive waiter (Nicolas). Tasty and typical dishes.
We ordered two lunch set. The food is different than I expected it. Very traditional Quebec meals. I really enjoy it.
DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY HERE! I had high hopes for this restaurant, as my husband and I love exploring older establishments, and this one was on our list to try. Unfortunately, the experience was disappointing. The food was basic nothing exciting or memorable about it. The service was terrible. I had to repeatedly ask the waiter for water and for the next round of food. To make matters worse, he seemed unwilling to attend to us after overhearing us speaking in another language. His behavior was not only unprofessional but also discriminatory and rude. I would not recommend this place to anyone!
Simply excellent and deli
Wanted a true Quebec food experience and they delivered. They also have an incredible lunch prix fixe menu that lasts until 5:00 pm. Includes wine or beer with meal and is authentic. The waiter and waitress were charming and full of life.
Cute restaurant, very cozy! And tasty authentic dishes.
I liked the place, its like eating homemade food, everything was delicious, and the service was very good. I opted for the menu, which includes starter, main course and dessert. It must be considered that the menu price of $64.85 is without tax and tip.
Enjoyed a hearty meal in this cosy restaurant recommended by friends who are frequent visitors to QC (and this establishment). A stones throw away from Chateau Frontenac, this restaurant is worth a trek down for Grandmas treat and the delicious maple syrup pie!
My husband loved the dish of bison stew, very tender and tasty,I had warm duck confit on bed of salad, nothing to brag about, rather dissapointing dish ,chewy and almost cold duck and service kind of rushing us,to leave fast,It was Sunday 6 pm ,did not seem too full .I remember the place from 10 years ago and it was different, nicer service and really French Canadian food, hoped to have beef bourguignon and foie gras, no luck
Good restaurant The food is not exceptional but ok. You will find good, rather classic dishes there. The atmosphere and service are very good. Rather touristy and traditional restaurant
Wow, very nice restaurant wonderful decorations Very delicious food. We enjoyed very much this dinner. Great soup and wine Vegetarian options: Not sure Parking: Not sure Kid-friendliness: Very kind with kids
Nice welcome, we have a good time there with well-prepared local specialties, except perhaps the crème brûlée .
Very very nice. I highly recommend.
Restaurant located in the upper town. Complete lunch menu, starter, main course, dessert, drink (beer or glass of wine) for 40 dollars. Very pleasant setting: very generous and very tasty portions. I recommend.
Had an amazing traditional Quebecois dinner served by Julien. Would highly recommend!!
We were there with two people for the special for CAD 39.95 + tax per person. Thats okay for now. The beer is good to drink, but the food is of mediocre quality. You can eat, but in my opinion it is a bit below average compared to similar restaurants. Ambiance is a bit old, you have to like it. Service was okay, but not particularly noteworthy.
We ate at this restaurant by chance and we were not disappointed! As much by the meal as by the service. We were served by Sam, who was incredible with us, he made us have a great dinner. Lets talk about the dishes.. in our opinion everything is homemade, we wanted to eat typical Quebec/Canadian food and we were not disappointed. Everything was excellent. The prices may seem a little high but the restaurant offers an evening menu for $70 for a drink, starter and dessert... really the value for money is there! You will not be disappointed.
This is a restaurant where you can taste Canadian home-cooked food. The small and cozy interior was so pretty.
Good service
Absolutely Amazing french onion soup and boeuf bourguignon! Omg!! Excellent service and food. If you are near here, go!!
Friendly atmosphere and very warm decor. Great service from Sam. I advise you to go there for lunch, menu for $39 with drink, starter, main course, dessert. Delicious. A little disappointed with the maple crème brûlée which was delicious but didnt taste like maple. Full of typical Quebecois and comforting dishes. We had a great time, I recommend!
The table and chairs are small and uncomfortable The service was terrible and the food portion was so little and overpriced. I ordered full portions of the main courses instead of their set menu but I couldnt believe how it came out...very disappointing experience
Nice set up, warm welcome, and okyish food. Their lunch set that includes starter, main course, dessert and a glass of wine/beer is designed to cater tourists. Well, it is located in a tourist area - what else you expect. Service is top class but meals are average. We didn t find anything unique to relate to Ancient Canadian cuisines. Worth a visit once, though we noticed at least one guests visiting second time in 2 days.
Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful ! In this oldest house of Quebec (1677) everything was wonderful. Take a shot of calvados, try game dishes, try maple syrup pie, talk to Nicholas (our waiter) about bow hunting and you will understand that this trip was right thing to do.
Beautiful concept and beautiful plates
Very cozy, relaxed and warm setting in a historic house. Very helpful and friendly staff. Interesting food selections based on local history. The food was good and fun to have but less a highlight than the place itself and its unique ambience.
Very slow service. Meh staff and food. The wait staff and kitchen were just going through the motions and didnt seem to care. Tables are cramped. Sitting at the table is like sitting on a plane eating like T-Rex. Adjoining tables waaay too close. No one in our party said theyd return-too many other choices. Resting on past laurels? I do not recommend.
Had an absolutely delicious experience start to finish. Bison bourguignon was . Great, authentic food & ambience. Thanks for a memorable meal!
Service was poor, food was mediocre..
Every dish was so delicious!! Must visit restaurant in town Food
Delicious we were on September 14 for my children. Great
Excellent food, larger inside than it looks and well appointed
For the price its ok. I think the veggies were from frozen. Worth going to if you want to get full. Fun for groups.
Awesome place to try quebecois food and culture
I loved the atmosphere of this place, you can tell its a house-turned-restaurant and its charming, feels almost like youre eating at grandmas house. The staff were also lovely! That said the food was just ok... The pea soup was very good, but thats where it ended - the meat pie was ok, the meatballs surprisingly came in a cinnamon sauce (very unexpected), the veggies and sides felt like an afterthought, and the creme brulee didnt taste like maple, vanilla or anything other than a regular pudding. If there was a way to taste the unique dishes without getting the full 3 course meal, it would have been fantastic, but unfortunately you can only take appetizers a la carte... Not cheap and not worth it, in my opinion.
Delicious onion soup, very charming place, attentive service.
We had read many reviews and visited. Everyone got the $39.95 set menu that included an entree, an entree, a dessert, and a glass of wine or beer. Fair choice and reasonable price for the countrys data. However, the food didnt excite us without us being hungry.
A little pricey because they cater to tourists but not in an exploitative way - the food is indeed very good. Great way to get acquainted with traditional Canadien cuisine, which is very heavy and best enjoyed in colder weather. Nice atmosphere in a building dating back 300+ years.
Yummy food in one of the oldest houses in Quebec City.
The food was nice, expensive though. Fast service. Food
Best meal we had in Quebec City
Amazing service our waiter gave us really nice suggestions! Great spot for authentic Quebec cuisine.
Super delicious food with all the QuΓ©bec stables. Wey friendly staff and warm welcome and service.
Excellent table! Lovely staff, refined cuisine.
Overpriced Tourist Trap. Skip.
Very typical restaurant, with a unique menu and almost only tourists. but once thats said, the service is great and the food is really good. If like us you dont know Quebec cuisine, go for it. but be careful if you deviate from the fixed menu, the prices are quite high (small beer at 10 CAD, 6 CAD for filter coffee, etc.). Its more for a lunch than a dinner, but honestly it was a lot more for us (the duck breast salad quite well seasoned, the weight soup, the pork with mustard, and especially the blueberry tart and the one with maple syrup homemade).
Dont look any further. This is it. If you are looking for a truly authentic cuisine du vieux quΓ©bec, you cant go wrong. Excellent food, excellent service. A+++. Will come back!
The food and service was excellent. However, there was very deceptive advertising on the front door. They advertised a 40% discount if paid in US$. I verified with the server that that discount would be applied if i used US dollars. When the bill came , instead of a 40% discount, it was only about 28%. When i questioned them about it, they said i was taking the discount incorrectly. Instead of taking 40% off, which my MBA and BS in math tells me how to do it, they divided the bill by 1.4 which yields about a 28% discount. I questioned them about it and the answer was, thats just how we do it. Dont go there if youre planning on paying with US $. Good food, seriously overpriced
Complete lunch menu, starter, main course, dessert, drink. Copious plates, good cooking, taste and colors. Excellent service all in a pleasant setting and decoration in line with the restaurant. Only pleasure and happiness. Very good address.
Skippable. Its expensive and the food is about what youd expect at a rural pub (in other words, pretty simple and unexciting food. And a pub would be way cheaper). This was the only place I regret going during my time in Quebec city. There are so many great food options in the city that are also cheaper.
This place is clearly made for tourists and does not really represent the spirit of Quebec. Yes, the formula is financially interesting but the cuisine is average and the service a little cold. We were a little disappointed by this address
Food was Excellent!! Great attentive staff, cozy atmosphere! Food
Main dish is delicious, dessert is too sweet, service is good
In the heart of Old Quebec. I go there occasionally. Always been very satisfied.
Truly exceptional for game meats. A traditional French Canadian restaurant. Great service. Maple Crème Brûlée a treat Skip lunch to enjoy it all!!
Fantastic food authentic French Canadian, like my grandmother used to make. Try their meat pie and rague. Cant wait to go back.
Affordable all-inclusive package. Service fast! Quality of food correct! Very central location.
Wonderful experience! It was the best food me and my family had in a road trip we did. The waiter was very helpful and friendly. For the quality of food, the ambience of the restaurant and the amazing people, the price is great!
I loved it, the food was delicious, the waitress was super attentive and the place was super nice.
They have a gluten free menu and I had the escargot and Les Trois Mignons of cerf, wapiti, and bison, which was delicious. I learned on the walking tour it is the oldest building in Quebec City! Full of charm and warm ambience.
Outstanding service, very friendly and accommodating, a real pleasure to be their guest. The three of us had the Table dhote with different selections for appetizers and entrees, and it was phenomenal. Soup of the day was mushroom soup, probably the best Ive ever tasted! The onion soup was equally delectable. I had the Quebec meat pie and meatball ragout, very tasty and the fruit ketchup was a nice complement. My wife had the chicken cordon bleu while our daughter had the duck poutine, all three dishes were amazing. A lovely evening out for us, such great hospitality and an experience to remember. Merci!
The most expensive seafood platter with 4 shrimp , 2 scallions and 1 piece of crabmeat. 65+ $ The reedbeet salad was nothing special. I would not recommend. Food : 2/5
Traditional Old Quebec restaurant, its not cheap, but the meats are divine.
We ate very well, traditional dishes and the service was great
Legendary traditional Quebec food that we look forward to every time we visit Quebec! Not a bad bite on the menu. Standouts are Bison bourguignon, lobster bisque and maple bread pudding. Our waiter Sam was the best. Highly recommend!
Simply amazing! The Lobster Bisque and Bread Pudding are my favorites. Any time Im in Quebec I always make sure to stop in. Shout out to our server Sam who was fantastic!
Excellent place to learn about local food. Impeccable attention and very nice place
Mediocre quality. Not suitable for vegetarians. No selection, mostly just hearty, fatty dishes with meat and sauces. The only vegetarian dish was a lackluster salad, nothing special. The house wine with the menu was a disaster. Better drink water. At the table where we sat, the air conditioning was blowing directly on our necks. 3 tips to different waiters didnt change anything. Now I caught a cold on vacation.
Highly recommend. Food was incredible. Staff were wonderful. Go before 4pm for set menu, great deal! Includes app, main, Dessert and glass of wine or beer
The menu looks great, but the quality does not live up to expectations. The cordon bleu chicken breast was dry, the olives mixed into the vegetables were simply out of place. The blueberry pie pastry was tasteless. The restaurant itself is lovely, but the food is extremely disappointing. Food
Home-style traditional Canadian food. Very good service (Merci, Samuel) Generous portions and meat-centric. We loved the pea soup, beef bourguignon, and coulibiac.
Superb food & service: a lot of local dishes with deer/wapiti & bison house wine is good too!
Exceptional food and service.
Our best culinary experience of our trip to Quebec! The quality of the food and the service amply justifies the price of the table dhΓ΄te. I ate the best poutine of my trip with real poutine cheese! I even took my dessert home! Mention ++ to the decoration!
Like many restaurants in QuΓ©becs old city , this eatery is awful , overpriced, and weirdly fake . Food is reminiscent of retirement home victuals served by a waitstaff that are moving as fast as a turtle on sedatives. If I were asked which dish would be the one that stood out with the most foulness , it would have to be the dessert. The blueberry pie is absolutely disgusting. A blue goo that has a taste similar to the worst Aldi jam one could imagine encased in a greasy thin and bland shell . It is an insult . A gas station would sell better desserts. Never again.
Everything was delicious. Very good welcome and service. Reasonable price for a restaurant in a tourist area.
Best food and wine that we have had in Canada. Maitre d was personable and very accommodating, and our waiter, Sandrine, was helpful, efficient, and a delight. We were very happy to see the extensive wine list. We loved the Bison Bourguignon and the three grilled tenderloins, and very much appreciated the host of veggies that came with them. The maple Crème Brulee was to die for!
Very strange menu that does not accommodate alacarte. Atmosphere is great but overall over priced and disappointing food from what we expected.
Excellent value for money. We took refuge there to escape the rain, but we were very pleasantly surprised, it is not at all a tourist trap restaurant, the portions are generous, the dishes delicious and well served and the service very friendly and efficient. , nothing to say, I highly recommend.
What a fabulous and cozy end to our Quebec Holiday. The food, service, and atmosphere is superb. Highly recommend. Food : 5/5
An excellent discovery and very good value for money
The service is very attentive, formal and fast. It has a very nice decoration inside.
Historic restaurant and quality service
My wife and I stopped by for lunch on a weekday in August. After arriving in Quebec City around noon, I immediately started walking around the city, and this was the first restaurant I went to. It had a very elaborate interior and seemed to have a high level of formality, and since it was 2:00 pm, which was a decent time, I was shown to my seat without having to wait. My wife seemed to have searched in advance and was lucky to get in without having to make a reservation or wait. I ordered the $39.95 lunch set. The main dish was Poutine with Duck, the appetizer was Quebec meat pie, and the drink was beer. I think it was written that the set included dessert, but the waitress didnt ask, so my wife and I decided to ask later and waited for our appetizers for a few minutes while drinking beer... Introducing a pie whose size makes you wonder, Huh? Is this an appetizer? ! If you go to a fancy Japanese restaurant, you might not be surprised if its called the main dish. The pie had a soft texture that fell apart, but the minced meat filling was super dense. My wife ordered soup as an appetizer, and the size of it was about what I expected. Both the soup and pie are delicious! Now, about Poutine, which originated in Quebec... It s huge! After walking around and sightseeing the next day, I realized that poutine seems to be an everyday food, and many people just eat poutine. The poutine I ordered was accented with stewed duck meat, and went well with the slightly sweet gravy. Its really delicious. However, the amount was...I tried my best to get about 70% of it, and then my wife helped me finish it. If I were to compare a single menu item like this poutine to a Japanese meal, it would be a large cutlet curry or grilled pork ramen (so-called Jiro style?). My wife chose meat pie as her main dish, and in addition to the meat pie I ordered as an appetizer, it also had vegetables and meat dumplings, making it a variety of dishes to enjoy. Im not saying which one is correct, but if I were to visit you for lunch next time, I might choose this one for the main dish. When my husband and I were both super full, the waitress brought us a menu and asked, ``What would you like for dessert? Oh, I see, do you take your order after you finish your main course? No, thats not possible. Having run through the 42.195km full marathon like a half marathon, we had no more room in our stomachs, so we politely declined and asked for coffee after the meal. However, I think this course, which includes a drink and dessert, costs CAD 39.95, which is extremely cheap. There was also a French fry as an appetizer, which could be changed to poutine for an additional charge. Since it was my first time using it, I didnt know the size, so I chose the included option that didnt cost any extra, but now I think it would have been better to have a poutine as an appetizer. I was full and satisfied.
Amazing experience with classic Quebecois food. Must try their meat pie and pea soup. Beef Wellington was also good. The server Simon was very friendly and had a good story for each item ordered. Would go again in a heartbeat!
Its definitely a touristy store. Dessert and coffee are not good
One of the oldest homes in Quebec City - it s an incredible experience. The food was delicious - my family all opted for the three course lunch special (only available until 4:00 pm) - which costs approximately $40 + any additions you may want to add (See menu). Left full and happy.
Loved! Unexpectedly delicious, homey, hearty food and the maple pie was unlike anything I ve had. Yum!
Want to eat in a typical place and discover Quebec dishes? You are in the right place. For $40 per person we were able to taste regional dishes including: starter + main course + dessert + a glass of wine or beer. The meals are very good and very plentiful. We couldnt finish the dish and had to take the desserts away, which the waitress kindly advised us. The staff are very welcoming and helpful. The period outfits and decor allow us to travel back in time! A very nice address
Extensive menu, well prepared food and good quantity. Good price
Great old house decorations as well. Definitely one of the best sports to eat local dishes other than poutine. They have a well curated menu and some special dishes. The house wine paired perfect and the desert I recommend maple bread pudding
We had a great time! The former Canadians deserve their reputation and we enjoyed traditional, hearty and tasty dishes. Kid-friendliness: Good welcome and childrens menu offered
The service is great. Atmosphere is nice. Food would be around 4/5. Not really wow, but not that bad.
problems with tips ruined the experience. between these and taxes prices are 30% more expensive than announced
Very pleasant place. Rich and interesting cuisine. Average service. However, tips are already included, and the servers openly complain about the additional tips you leave (which are overall quite fair). This ruins the experience. The owner should keep a closer eye on the staff.
Tasty and atmospheric. The prices are high, but its worth it.
Good home cooking. Decent service. On the other hand excessive price and above all price for exactly the same menu at lunchtime 25 dollars cheaper!!!!! 65 dollars in the evening compared to 40 dollars for lunch. UNALLOWABLE!
Ha we took a leap into the past, as if I was returning to my grandmothers house in this old house, very smiling staff in period dresses . We had an experience + a good meal of Quebec and Canadian classics, at a gastronomic level... Thank you
A unique experience for Koreans. Good food. The lunch special is great value for money.
We loved the atmosphere of this restaurant. The food was okay. The meat pie with meat balls had a flavour that my wife did not like at all. I found it okay but too much food. The salad with goat cheese on it had a weird smokey taste that our companion didnt enjoy. The Beef Wellington seemed to be the only dish at our table of 4 that was thoroughly enjoyed with no issues. Desserts were good. We sat upstairs and the waiter was efficient but didnt attend to the fact that I clearly identified that I am lactose/dairy intolerant. He brought my escargots appetizer covered with cheese! If we were to eat here again, wed opt for the lunch special as dinner special (Table dHote at $69.95) was expensive and too much food. There are better and cheaper places to eat in Quebec City.
Beat restaurant you can find in Quebec City! Visiting it is a must! My 2 advices: 1- Try the quebecois platters like: cretons de gibiers, bourguignon de bison & regal de grand-mère. 2- go for lunch, between 12pm and 5pm, you can have the formula (starter, plattwr and desert) for half its price!
So, we had heard so much about this restaurant as being a tradition Canadian food restaurant. The people were nice, friendly and accommodating but the food. The presentation was good but...... The chicken cordon bleu was so dry, even the sauce it was served with couldnt moisten it. The meatballs tasted like cardboard mixed with mystery meat. The meat pie was bland. Underwhelming meal. On the upside, the pea soup was good and so was dessert but how can you go wrong with maple syrup, cake and sugar.
Excellent, well-prepared food and exceptional service. This is my fourth visit. Highly recommend!
Cute place, closed in and crowded with history. Great deals for the tourist looking for a full meal. We kept things simple with cocktails and soup. The split pea soup was great, the onion soup had a great broth but was a bit too much in the way of bread. The cocktails were a big fail. Stick to wine or water here.
Quebec cuisine, as we like it, generous and good for the body. Very friendly atmosphere. and very nice decoration: you have to see the toilets!
My friends and I went for dinner/supper there during our visit to QuΓ©bec City, and we had a great time. The food was delicious, good portions, very decent price (with their Table d HΓ΄te, which even includes a glass of red or white wine). It was also great to taste various traditional QuΓ©bec terroir dishes! The hosts/waiters were all very nice, and helpful, making sure we understood the menu. This restaurant is also a nice experience because of the building it s in. Definitely worth going there if you visit QuΓ©bec city!
Cozy spot, with a diverse menu. Lots of options with wild meats.
Superb place, good food, attentive staff, I highly recommend if you are in Quebec
Food is not great and the atmosphere is very outdated. It is an older building but the interior design is lacking and aged. Our server was the lone bright spot.
Very good address in old Quebec The menu is plentiful and very good. The price is very reasonable for the quality of the dishes and the service.
Great restaurant in old Quebec!
WOW! What a delightful evening of authentic and scrumptious local traditionally prepared food. The waitress was pure perfection, she knows how to serve a room with efficiency and friendly service. The food was perfect in every way and the Bison Fondue was out of this world. A must for lunch or dinner!!!
This is my favourite restaurant in old Quebec City!! So quaint and the food .delicious homestyle cuisine with very generous portions. You will not walk away hungry!!! Oh and you gotta try the grand-mere s treat and the maple syrup bread pudding. Friendly and welcoming staff who are more than happy to answer any questions about the menu! Set in a historical building just a few steps away from Chateau Frontenac and other hotels! Make your reservation here for a memorable dining experience!!
Great, really fantastic. Delicious and very friendly
This is a tourist trap that I sadly fell into. The servers are doing their best but the kitchen has checked out. We had nothing fresh on our plate. The veggies were from a can or frozen, we had an uncooked, completely raw brussel sprout on the plate, and nothing is seasoned. Do NOT go here.
Good Very nice Food
Dining inside what is considered the oldest house in Quebec was so charming. Our waitress was very friendly and the food was absolutely incredible! For appetizers, my family enjoyed the very cheesy escargot dish and my dad absolutely loved the French onion soup. In terms of entrees, the filet mignon dish was tasty and the meat pie (which I was looking forward to trying in Quebec) was better than I could have ever imagined and I really enjoyed its flaky crust. For desserts, we chose the chocolate pie and the maple crème brûlée, and they were nothing short of spectacular. In fact, the crème brûlée was the best I have ever eaten! Since ordering dishes individually can really add up, I recommend ordering in the form of a formule ($39.99+ for 1 drink + 1 appetizer + 1 entree + 1 dessert), which allows you to try a complete meal for a fraction of the cost of ordering each component individually. Overall, I enjoyed dining at Aux Anciens Canadiens and hope to be back again someday!
Excellent restaurant, the meal was sublime and the staff were kind and smiling.
We were very happy to find this restaurant. There is a $40 menu with a drink, starter, main dish and dessert. Therefore, it is very worth it. I recommend it.
Excellent food in a beautiful, historic setting. Highly recommend the Table dhΓ΄te - one price for a complete meal (appetizer, entree, dessert plus wine or beer). We have eaten here twice and every dish has been delicious. Portions are large and theres a significant discount if youre there before 17:00. Dietary restrictions: Im a Celiac (severe gluten allergy) and the staff and chef are very knowledgeable and forthcoming with gluten free options. The grilled goat cheese salad is delicious and pairs well with the house Chardonnay. Maple creme brulee is wonderful.
This is the place to go for terrific food and good value. Added is that the service and wait staff are friendly and really a notch above. Prix Fixe from 12 to 5 at $40 is the bargain of Quebec City. Includes a glass of wine, starter, main and dessert. It cant be beat in most cities and the food was teΒ²rrific.
very good service, but the food is not according to the price
Decor is super cute and lovely but food was not too impressive, but a good place to try Quebec cuisine. Tried escargot, duck salad, French onion soup, maple syrup cake, chocolate pie, grandmas special(?) and more
Very good experience with tasty traditional food and good staff with their recommendations.
The Three tenderloin dish was absolutely delicious. Starting from the deer to the bison and then the elk meat you can taste the differences in the meat. All three were delicious . Unfortunately there was no draft beer available but only local beer out of cans...
Walk-in friendly. Great menu.
Thanks to Sam for his welcome and his advice I also recommend the grandmother s treat dish.
Wow.... very impressive. No wonder its on 1001 places to go before you die. Little pricey but so good and so much historical ambience! The maple creme Brule was awesome indeed.
We took the 4-course menu, it was divine. The dishes are very well served. Canadian cuisine, very good product, nothing to say, except that I would return
Dessert was yummy. Duck confit was mediocre.
Fab restaurant, great food, not to be missed
Food was delicious. Prices great. The gentleman server was excellent. His amicable personality was the highlight of the experience.
Very odd food, and not very well cooked. Had the bison bourguignon, which had a weird creamy sauce, meat was overcooked. It bore no relation to a bourguignon. My wife had salmon which also tasted weird. Unimpressed.
Loved this restaurant in old quebec city. Had fantastic meals. Highly recommend.
Really good! The service and food was exceptional. We loved it all! Yes, a little expensive, but it s worth visiting at least once in your life!
Great place for a good meal. Portion sizes were more than I expected. The bread pudding was Devine. Huge shout out to our wait staff Sam and Nicolas, they were amazing.
Everything was wonderful! I agree with what we were told....good for the lips, bad for the hips!
Great historic retrospective.
My husband and I enjoyed a wonderful meal here on our last night in Quebec City and were so pleased with our experience! Our waiter Sam was incredibly knowledgeable not only about every aspect of the menu but he also has a great knowledge of the buildings history which was super cool to learn about! Its 350 years old, the oldest building in town which is super cool! We really enjoyed the atmosphere in the old house environment and were so happy we got seated upstairs by the fireplace with all the fun old decor and unique construction. It is so quaint and the food was amazing! My husband tried the meat pie and meatballs and I tried the bison with blueberry wine sauce. We also tried the caramel maple bread pudding and blueberry pie for dessert. Everything was great! We will definitely come back here again! A+++
Very homey and cozy experience, felt like I was eating someones family recipes. Perfect place for comfort food. Make sure youre hungry, portions are big!
The atmosphere fit the vibe they were going. Food was traditional, and the desserts were really good but the meals were a little unseasoned because Canadians I guess dont have much seasoning. Crème brûlée was so good and so was the pie.
No matter how the food is, I have to say the atmosphere here is like dead while we visit.. I came here couple years ago and it was so welcoming. To start with, the lunch combo for $39. the meat pie smell and taste like on shelf for 10 days, not fresh at all. Don t do the meat pie, ground meat not good quality at all. Not recommend ordering this dish( forget the name, but it has bison, red deer, elk $65) it tastes like raw meet even fully cooked. Their maple syrup pie was soooo good!!
Fantastic meal with incredible service. The beef Wellington was the best I ve had and the crème brûlée is not to be passed on!
If you want to prove to yourself that you can eat as much as a hockey team, go for it. If you like paying a lot of money for a hearty, fatty and lackluster meal, go for it. If you are looking for gourmet and modern cuisine, go your way, for the same price you will get much better elsewhere. To be more concrete; some starters are found in patchwork to create the main dishes, everything is in Dantesque proportions, impossible to finish because it is so fatty, and in the end the price is very high.. 70$ for starter, soup, main course, dessert and a glass of alcohol... Everything could be divided by 2, the quantities and the price, it would already be less waste, and we wouldnt imagine eating in a good restaurant, it would be less misleading.. French toast with Maple syrup was nonetheless good.
Authentic Quebecois restaurant with traditional food and atmosphere. You cannot skip it of you are in the old town, and the prices do not look like a rip off. Definitely recommend the smoked bison fondue Parmesan. Stellar service by Nicolas!
It was incredibly good, starter, main course and dessert!! Thank you for everything
Such a sweet place, delicious food.
Historic restaurant right near downtown historic Quebec. Got the lunch set menu for 40$. Came with beer or wine, an appetizer, a main plate, and a dessert. Many many options and some that have up charges so if you get those items you will come out above the 40$. I got beer, pea soup (to try the traditional soup), grandmas treat (meat pie, fruit ketchup, meatball ragout, and some veggies), and the maple pie. All were great and is a great deal for lunch menu. Did not leave hungry.
Authentic restaurant for sure, the food was traditional and different we enjoyed it a lot, beef bourguignon and chicken cordon blue. We got maple bread pudding, but it was too sweet.
