Laurie Raphaël, Quebec City in Québec City

This restaurant served my wife and I the best dinner we have ever had, and we have dined in some of the best restaurants in France, Italy and the U.S. We live in a serious gourmet food city, Santa Fe, New Mexico, but nothing has ever compared to the experience at Laurie Raphael. We chose a preselected multi-course meal that was avant garde, innovative and exquisite. I was given the option to upgrade a couple of wine pairings and chose to have a small glass of a $6,000 bottle of French Pinot noir. Thats what kind of place Laurie Raphael is. You start by being introduced to the brigade of chefs in the kitchen who will prepare your plates. Our server was also the head sommelier. Service was impeccable. It was an absolutely unforgettable dining experience that never at any point missed the mark of perfection.

A great experience! The concept is well worked, from the moment you arrive through the kitchen, the restaurant follows a certain logic whether in the dishes / in the service or even the direction of exit nothing is left to chance. The service is excellent and every detail of your table is scrutinized. We had some discomfort because the establishment next door was noisy, we had the offer to move us to another table as well as a gesture on the bill, it was appreciated. Concerning the dishes, it is worked and the agreement between chef and sommelier works well, it is very refined. We had a great evening for our tenth birthday. Well between us, we are French, and cheese leaves us wanting more .. Looking forward to it!

At the pinnacle of restaurant experiences are places like Laurie Raphael. Every moment is choreographed. The restaurant itself is beautiful and quiet, and the entrance takes you to the kitchen where the chefs greet you with a cornucopia of items you will be seeing later in a much more sophisticated state. The stonewear used to decorate the table is designed to add calm. Individual courses are described in detail and served elegantly. If you are familiar with restaurants like Joel Robuchon, Central (in Lima, Peru), or Taillevent, you will know what to expect. The attention to detail is exquisite. The subtle melange of tastes was delightful and fascinating. of course, an experience like this comes at a cost. Those contemplating a visit should be aware. A bottle from their Wine Spectator-awarded cellar may cost more than an entire meal at some very good restaurants. We thought the meal was worth the price.

Chic restaurant and it shows. We feel treated with care. The sommelier knows his job and has adapted very well to the client. The mocktails are refined, we are far from the traditional mix of orange juice and grenadine juice. The research work for the meals is well done and you can feel it in every bite! I highly recommend it. Raphaël is an outstanding chef and the fact that he takes a few minutes with our daughter at the end of the meal is a gesture that my daughter will remember all her life.

Good morning, The food was delicious. However, it was our first visit to the Laurie Raphaël, which we made clear when we arrived. I hadnt found the detailed menu prices on the site, but I saw that you should expect to pay more than $100 per person, which suited us. I was a little confused when we were presented with the menu and there seemed to be only two options, or even one, since the menu presentation was done quickly and the menu was $140 per person. only seemed to be available to people who mentioned having a food allergy at the time of their reservation. We had not yet finished understanding the menu options when we were receiving the first course at our table! Honestly I felt a little rushed and stuck. The next day while revisiting the website we ended up finding the menu, a menu which was on a web link on the site. I was happy to find myself a Laurie Raphaël, I had seen Daniel Vézina for the first time on TV with Suzanne Lapointe... I would describe my experience as mixed! I dont plan on visiting you again. What a breathtaking culinary experience! As soon as we entered, we were surprised and delighted by the originality of the welcome. The exit is not left out. We recommend this unique adventure of which we have unforgettable memories. We thank you for the attention given to us.

Over the past few years, Ive been avoiding tasting menu restaurants more and more, and Laurie Raphael is Exhibit A as to why...enough to stimulate this unusually (for me) elaborate review. To start with the positives, the staff here is impeccably trained and well-mannered, and the room is quite interesting in its physical set-up. After that, its all downhill, specifically: 1. Each course is a riot of ingredients and flavors (too clever by half is the phrase that comes to mind), such that your memory and your palate are left in a state of confusion as opposed to rewarding TASTE. 2. Relatedly, these are all microbites, and when the server asks how did you like it?, youre tempted to answer, Beats the heck out of me...I didnt get enough of any one thing to know!. Ive heard of this before, but never believed it would happen to me: on the way back to my room at the Frontenac, I actually stopped for a burger at that establishments bistro. 3. The wine pairing was dismal, full of obscure and off-wines nobody wants to drink...an Italian rose (!), an Alsatian pinot noir (!!), and even a maple-flavored beer as one of the wine pairings. Further, the pours were likewise micro-sized. At these prices and portions (more on that in a moment), one wouldve thought the occasional 2009/10 Bordeaux Cru Classe, or Brunello, or top-flight CA chardonnay, or ANYTHING typically revered by the average wine drinker, would be appropriate. 4. For all of this, one will receive a bill in excess of $1,000 CAD for two! The only word that fits is WOW!!! The previous night, my wife and I dined at a Quebec establishment called Chez Boulay. Here there were three courses, appetizer-entree-dessert, and each offering was substantial and infused with bold, clear and satisfying flavors that stayed with you. The contrast was stunning, and the bill less than $300 CAD for two. Look, I dont begrudge anyone their tastes, if youre into this kind of thing, but to me, this is not dining, but rather chefs riffing. Its like attending that concert you worked so hard to get tickets for, only to encounter a stream of 45-minute drum/guitar solos, without a single song that sticks in your head. If I were Pete Wells (the NY Times restaurant critic), and could influence dining trends, Id endeavor to make these formats (including omikase parades) a forgotten mistake for the dustbins or dining history. In summary, a disappointing missed opportunity, with an obviously talented chef who, alas, is either not confident enough in his/her ability to sustain three superb and satisfying courses and/or is a bit more focused on profit margins than feeding customers.

The dishes were perfect, an incredible culinary experience, but an experience tarnished by a somewhat noisy room and above all by an extremely long waiting time between dishes. We were told that there was a group of 15 people which could cause a delay. A little wait would have been understandable but sometimes it was 20 minutes between two courses, the sommelier had to serve the glasses several times because the dishes did not arrive on time! It is not acceptable to endure a group in a restaurant of this level. Especially when youre not rolling in gold and you can only afford this kind of restaurant very occasionally. However, we would like to thank the entire team who worked hard.

My love affair with Laurie Raphaël has lasted for over 20 years. So many gastronomic memories in this restaurant which refined my knowledge and my taste for great cuisine and good wines. Kid-friendliness: My partner took my 10-year-old daughter to Laurie Raphaël and as both of them asked a lot of questions, we kindly showed them around the kitchens, in addition to offering Sarah a large maple candy. This is just one example of the elegance of this restaurant, their owners and the staff.

Its impossible not to stop at Laurie Raphaël even if only for dessert. A must for good restaurants in Quebec.

Inventive, creative cuisine, a great gastronomic experience!

I havent had the pleasure of visiting the restaurant yet but they all look good and I hope one day to have the opportunity to eat a gourmet dinner

Absolutely loved this place Fine dining newer style Great team that seems to really works well together The tasting menu was delicious The wine pairing was a hit or miss we appreciate they journey off the beaten track but still expect the wines to be delicious or at least be enjoyable with the course (referring to the Quebec wines as these were def not our favorites) Also 7 courses is 7 courses with 7 wine pairings unlike other restaurants in town The friandises with the coffee or the cherry on the cake Overall can highly recommend and hope to come back one day

Impeccable dining experience!

Food and wine is very good dont get that wrong. Service between one dish to another one time took 45 mins which is way too long sitting there waiting. It is very expensive just being Fr but its worth it for the experience because youll never do it again. Good cold water

My wife and I had terrific dinner at Laurie Raphaël. I had reserved a table on the terrace, but asked the host for a table inside, due to the gloomy weather. Thankfully, she was able to accommodate us. As a gastronomic restaurant, Laurie Raphaël does not disappoint. Every part of the dining experience is very well thought out and executed. The host led us through the restaurant to our table. Surprisingly, the first part of the restaurant that we entered was the kitchen, where Chef Raphaël Vézina and his Chefs all stopped whatever they were doing and greeted us with a hearty, Bonsoir! The entire space is beautiful and modern. After we were seated and enjoying a cocktail, the complete tasting menu was explained to us. My wife and I wanted to enjoy a lighter dinner on the final night of our first ever trip to Vieux-Québec, so we chose the five-course Menu Personnalisé over the full eight-course Expérience Gastronomique. I also chose to have the wine pairings with my meal. The food was terrific; inventive and delicious. We really enjoyed the pairing of cucumber with caviar, and the textures and flavors of the lobster course were fantastic. I only wish that I had been offered some bread to soak up every last bit of the sauce. There were no missteps with any of the dishes, which were all delicious. I ll post photos. The wines were chosen playfully and from all over the world. I particularly enjoyed the Il Roccolo di Monticelli di Rado, which transported me back to Venice. At first, I worried that the service would be less convivial than I prefer. The staff appeared to have clearly defined roles; some set the table, others delivered the food and others cleared the table. However, there was one gentleman who came by to introduce each course, and showed great humor when I asked him to do it in both English and then French, and, finally, both English and French at the same time. As tourists, the only part of our meal that was lacking was a clear connection between the food and wines to the locality. We travel to eat and experiencing the terroir is important to us. I was hoping for a more clearly Québécois meal. For example, the cheese option for the dessert course was a play on carbonara; a flan of egg, Louis d Or cheese and guanciale. While the cheese is from Québec, I felt like I was in Rome, instead of Québec. As I said, however, this feeling is particular to us as tourists. As a gastronomic experience, our meal lacked nothing and would stand out anywhere that we have been in the world.

We had a wonderful 5 course tasting menu. The service was impeccable; both the wine and the sans alcohol drink pairings thoughtfully chosen and delightfully introduced. The dishes were beautifully presented and a joy to eat. Its an experience from start to finish--what a treat!

What a restaurant! The dishes there are fine, sophisticated, studied, and above all delicious! It is possible to have a food-wine pairing and a food-bread pairing too! The experience is exquisite from start to finish. Thanks to the whole team!

A truly wonderful experience!!! We were part of a group dinner - so the menu wears preset. Every course was delicious!!

A potential Michelin? It was quite a long wait at the doorstep before staff noticed someone was waiting there. Afterwards, it became an exciting entrance as I went straight behind the curtains opening into the kitchen where staff made a welcoming greeting and then I was ushered straight to my table. The amuse bouche were flavourful but lacked the element to amuse. The mains were filling but nothing extraordinary. They have an interesting mid-course bread refill with three separately served butter flavours perhaps a strategy to allocate space in your tummy. They have a unique play on their petit fours a la buffet which was set at the bar. It was an interesting tasting menu but flavour entertainment needs to be elevated. It was a fun kitchen visit with the whole staff and the chef and managed to sneak a photo with them gladly offered by one of their staff. Michelin Guide needs to come and visit this little restaurant in Quebec City. Ive read theyve never set foot in the whole of Quebec province. Maybe thisll be their first.

Wonderful experience and one of the best restaurants I have been to in Canada.

The ultimate gastronomic experience, with a sommelier who takes you on a journey with his pairings that blend perfectly with each bite of each of the services offered. A sublime menu, divinely delivered flavors. An emotion emerges within you every time food comes into contact with your taste buds. Thank you to the Chef and his brigade for what you made my friend and I experience.

For our 50th wedding anniversary we were looking for something exceptional and we found it. Welcome through the kitchen, a successful gastronomic experience, accompanied by sought-after wines and above all thoughtful people. Thank you for this unique moment.

Definitely one of the best tables not only in the city, but of the province! Refined dishes with intricate tastes and textures. A special shout-out for the sommelier who was knowledgeable and entertaining. A michelin star experience in my book!

Evening very close to perfection, Restaurant halfway between 1 and 2 Michelin stars: perfect and very pleasant welcome, quality dishes with very elaborate local flavors, impeccable service, numerous attentions throughout the meal... what a magnificent surprise than this restaurant in Quebec!

OMG! I was expecting a decent tasting menu but I was blown away. The flavors, freshness and quality of everything was Michelin 2 star territory. The mixologist is on another level, I had the San-Alcool pairing and they all were so precise and complimentary to the dishes served with them. I would travel to QC to eat here again. Service was friendly and gladly spoke English with us. Not cheap but worth it!

OMG! Best food in a long time! Im a tuff person to please and the tasting menu was so spot on! I was so pleased with the choices. And every c ourse was so good. When i say i havent had a meal this good in forever, Im not joking! I would go back and spend the money just to enjoy the whole experience again. The staff was attentive, the food was amazing and the surroundings were beautiful!!! If your in the area and have a few extra bucks to spend, I highly recomend making a reservation to this place. You will not be disappointed. Oh and I dont speak french so i cant name the dishes. I really believe this place should be Michelin star rated. Because ive beeen to some before and this place was by far much better.

This was our 4th visit to Laurie-Raphaël over the years but a disappointment for the first time. First of all, we had reserved through Libro for 7:15 p.m. but a few days later, the restaurant wrote to us asking us to change the time of our reservation to 5:30 p.m. or 8:30 p.m. with no other choice possible. So lets go there for 8:30 p.m. or when we arrived there were a few empty tables but the service at our table didnt really start until 9:15 p.m. when there were only 4-5 tables occupied. We then understood that the lack of staff in the kitchen and in the dining room now controls the management of the restaurant! As for the service, it is uneven and no longer lives up to the reputation of the house. Asking for the customer WIFI access code, the waitress never came back with an answer nor was any special attention given to us to celebrate a birthday that we had indicated in our reservation. The little touches get lost! When it comes to the table, all the dishes are as sophisticated and elaborate as ever, but it is difficult to find links between them. And unfortunately one of the new dishes on the menu did not please us and we did not finish it, a first for us. The waiter then told us that 50% of the customers had already disavowed this new dish.... try which will undoubtedly be removed from the menu, he told us! Rather strange in such a restaurant! At the end of the meal, we were asked to go to the restaurant bar for snacks and to be able to close the room more quickly at the end of the evening but also to collect our comments: a great initiative which we hope will enable this renowned establishment to regain the luster he lost....as for us. Will we come back to it? This is a question that we didnt ask ourselves before, under the mastery of Daniel Vézina!

Far from the staged sluggishness, here is an address that takes gastronomy to a new peak. The tasting menu is an impressive journey of flavors in which all the dishes have been designed with inventiveness. Unmissable food and wine pairing.

The meal was exceptional. All the dishes on the gourmet menu were delicious and the flavors were both surprising and well combined. Dietary restrictions: They modified the dishes specifically for me to remove gluten.
