MALA TOWN! I love the Logo, I can see the owner is very diligent, and it’s clean and neat! I ordered the Szechuan Sauce Mixed, wonderful taste! It’s definitely a must coming restaurant!

August 17, 2024

The price of the malatang is very expensive at $3.30 per 100g. There is no price per weight shown anywhere in the store at the entrance or above the ingredients. The selection of ingredients to choose from are very limited. They don’t have any of raw meats to choose from. It’s mainly fish cakes, various tofu/bean curd, some odd green veggies and root vegetables. Nothing was labeled either. You had to guess. The broth was mediocre. We got the Mala Base Soup. Overall the meal was disappointing for $37. I wouldn’t eat here again. To respond to the restaurant’s reply. We didn’t choose any meat options at the checkout as we were already sticker-shocked by price after weighing what we have already. We’re used to other malatang places which charge $2.60-2.99 per 100g. So $3.30 per 100g was very pricey. You don’t have your price per 100g written anywhere. The customer only finds out at the end at the cash register. Also other malatang places we’ve visited have raw meat slices to grab at the ingredients counter. Unfortunately we weren’t aware of any meat options until it was too late due to lack of signage. Maybe if you have more signs to indicate this or have a worker inform the customer they can choose raw meat and the cost for that would have helped the customer make a more informed decision.

EDIT TO ADD TO OWNER'S RESPONSE: I selected Bean Curd (干豆腐卷) on the online menu, which based on Fantuan should've looked like the second picture. Instead, I received those tofu noodles (豆腐丝), which I really do not like. If I was truly unhappy, would I be fair and leave a 3 star review? I would probably leave a 1 star review I picked up the food at 11 and found out close to 11:30pm when I got home to eat my food. You attempted to call me twice close to midnight after the review, without leaving a voicemail. You also responded to my review on Google to make a comment, instead of offering a way to reach out such as a number or email to reach you at to resolve this. How did you expect to find out what issues I had with the order if I had no voluntarily told you by editing this review? I think if you want find a way to "solve the problem" as you say, you should start off by finding out why they are unhappy, and if they couldn't pick up the phone because you called late at night, leave your contact info in the voice message or Google review response. My 3 star was fair and factual that I did not get the item I wanted; do not assume that I was "unhappy" without understanding. --------------- Ordered pick up online directly from the store, came home, and saw they gave me the wrong toppings :(

I’m a typical Korean girl who loves malatang. I can’t count how many times I visited here, because it’s been years and I visited at least once a week or two😂 I tried all the malatang places in Toronto and this is the best one so far… seriously… now I cannot get fulfilled or satisfied with any other malatang place, this is a serious problem🤣 I genuinely hope this place NEVER disappear. The workers here are also super nice. They also give you free drinks if you pay with cash and go over certain amount of money! Anyways, go visit. Nowwww…..

First time having malatang! Yummy soup base, okay ingredients, friendly and accommodating staff, clean washroom, cute atmosphere. Some caveats: We definitely grabbed too much food, it came to about $30 each but only half was finished. Also, level 3 “hot” is actually quite spicy, so be careful 😈

I'd like to start this off by saying, I am NOT good at handling spice. And the medium spice level, which is generally something I can handle, was so spicy, I immediately regretted it. That being said, the ingredients are very fresh and flavourful, and the soup base itself is also very tasty. I liked the "open bar" concept here, it's very unique for Canada. The staff were incredibly nice and very polite as well. The only thing I wasn't too fond of was the space inside. It's very small and can only hold about 10 people comfortably. But other than that, absolutely amazing place, truly a hidden gem!

Near concept where you customize your bo of noodles and options to add additional protein from the kitchen, but food was fairly pricy for what it was. They also auto-charge you 10% gratuity.

The word Express on their name is a bit miss leading. It is not fast during lunch or dinner time but is not bad. It is a great concept that you pick your own food you like and the portion you prefer. It is a bit messy at the food selection station as food can drop into other container as people pick their own. Is also nice that you can choose your own spicy and num level. Water is not provided here but they are selling it at a reasonable price. Not much service here as they just cook the food in your bowl and give it to you. Is a bit pricy as the price you pay here you can get bigger portion at other noodles house

I love this place, the food is so good and spicy the staff is wonderful and it s open late! However t they don t have any meat slices or huge Ingredient selections. Also the ingredients don t have any English names on it so it s difficult to figure out what s in what if you have any dietary restrictions. The place is also super clean but pretty tiny.

Without a doubt my favourite malatang place. Though there are cheaper places with larger seating, this place still cant be beat. The mala soup is the BEST, for sure my favourite Ive tried. Theyre open super late so I always know I can grab a bowl after a late shift. It cant seat many (maybe max 14), but its never packed busy so you always have a seat. I love love love overfilling my bowl and taking the leftovers home to eat the next day. Please people come eat here so they never close.

Its sad, this is a store I used to love. Although there are not many types of ingredients, they taste really good. I just found out today that they have a mandatory 10% tip, and no one informed me about it. If I hadn t seen the receipt, I would never have known. Because this is a fast food restaurant that basically requires no service. I dont understand why this tip is mandatory. The attitude also disappointed me. I asked about the tip. Their attitude is that you don t need to give it if you order takeout, but they will never cancel the 10% for you when dining in, even if you ask and don t want to pay. This is unreasonable. tip. Sorry, I dont deserve to come to this store.

Not sure why peeps complained about the food and service. Malatown is always self-served, this is how you decide how much you want to spend for a meal. I enjoy every time I go there, both food and service have been consistently good!

Fresh ingredients, quiet place (sometimes not), close late night, matchless soup base This is a malatang restaurant that you must stop by if you are in Richmond Hill or Markham. I cant stop eating the extra spicy malatang here. The ingredients are okay, but it still has everything you need. It is also an advantage that it is the last malatang restaurant in the area to close haha. Its a bit disappointing that there is no cheese rice cake and you cant put the meat yourself!!

That was the grossest food Ive had in Markham. I paid $24 for a delivery of their classic soup and it came smelling like dirty socks. The soup smells as though its been curing in a dirty pot for days. There was practically no noodles in it and they put in ramen instead of the potatoe noodles I asked for. The other things that made up the stew was one sad tomato, a bunch of gross canned meats. Overall Stinky and barely edible.

December 22, 2022

Rating low is because I can t believe there are still restaurants not providing water. The tips that we gave can even buy a whole pack of bottled water. If we paid after eating instead of before, we wouldn t have tipped.

First time trying malatang and I was really good!! I love how you can choose your own ingredients to put in your noodle soup, the veggies were very fresh and the serving area was kept clean. The soup itself was delicious, a simple broth that compliments the veggies and meat well! Just beware to not go overboard with the self serve area...I got a bit too excited and my noodle soup was $30 LOL but I got a huge bowl so it was worth it . Definately coming back again

Generally okay place. It feels like comfort food to me. If you like choosing your toppings, and making DIY noodle bowls, this would be your place for Mala, schezuan and Curry flavoured soups. The price is per kilogram of the ingredients you pick out in a silver bowl (not sure if the weight of the silver bowl is taken to account already - maybe its used as a base price). Overall, I would recommend it for the experience. Vegetarian options: Peanut-friendly

The service was pretty good. The clerk told us that the price of meat was 100 grams. We ordered a portion of Malatang for two of us and took the initiative to bring us small bowls for sharing. Medium spicy is a bit spicy for me, but overall I m satisfied! There are not many choices of ingredients. There is a meatball that looks like Alpine candy. I don t know what it is called. It seems to be a cheese fish ball and it is delicious!

The price is very reasonable, 2.39 knives/100g. Different from the Malatang in my impression, you can pick up the bulk ingredients after entering the door, so it is not a skewered Malatang. We think this one is more like a Maocai hot pot and tastes very good. Should come again

Good quality malatang (self chosen ingredients gets cooked and served with or without a soup base). A bit on the pricier side (rate per kg) but this concept of by weight is a niche market. I got the medium non-numb spicy option and it was moderately spicy as expected. I would recommend people give it a try and see what they think of it themselves. Try all the different vegetables they have available! Lots of spicy and numb spicy levels. The place was well kept and decorated with natural wood colors. Nice staff.

I was so greedy that I finished the meal without taking a photo... I only remembered after I finished eating that I forgot to take a photo and write a review... Friends who come here can actually understand that this shop is just a Malatang shop, just to satisfy the craving. If you want to eat it as a meal, I suggest you find another place~ After all, there is no cooking or anything, it is just soup and water~ The attitude of the waiter is also bad Very good.
