Mikaku Udon Bar has certainly generated a buzz, and it's easy to see why. The minimalist decor and friendly staff create a welcoming atmosphere. The restaurant clearly aims to offer a unique dining experience, and there are certainly elements of that here. The Korean influence, as my friend noted, adds an intriguing twist to the traditional udon offerings. We were eager to try the famous curry katsu chicken udon, especially with a bit of spice. The dish was visually appealing and had a delightful aroma. While the flavours were enjoyable, the sauce could have been a bit thicker and more robust for a more indulgent experience. The addition of chilies definitely elevated the dish. It would be beneficial for the staff to have a deeper knowledge of the ingredients and preparation methods. Knowing whether the noodles are house-made or store-bought, and the type of flour used, can enhance the dining experience. While the hype surrounding Mikaku Udon Bar is undeniable, our experience was a solid 7/10. It's possible that we visited on an off day or perhaps our expectations were a bit too high. Nonetheless, we would consider returning if we're in the area and craving a comforting bowl of udon.

Food: 2 Stars Service: 4 Stars Ambience: 4 Stars Value: 3 Stars Overall: 3.25 Stars Went to Mikaku Udon Bar with a friend last Thursday around 5PM, and it wasn't too busy. The atmosphere is lovely, decorated with Japanese-themed art and decor, which really adds to the experience. The warm lighting and traditional Japanese elements like the wood accents and art on the wall made it feel quite cozy and authentic. It was a relaxing place to sit down and catch up with a friend after a long day. We started with the Buta as an appetizer, which was presented nicely. This dish was actually quite good, and as it comes with the salad in the middle, it complemented the dish well. For our mains, we ordered the Spicy Cream Udon and the Seafood Udon, as we were both craving something with a bit of heat. Unfortunately, despite the two chili pepper symbols next to these items on the menu, we found the dishes to be extremely mild—there was barely any spice at all. This was quite disappointing, especially since we specifically ordered these dishes for their advertised spiciness. We even checked with our server to make sure the order was correct, and she assured us it was. The flavours overall were not bad, but nothing extraordinary. The Spicy Cream Udon had a creamy texture, and the noodles were cooked perfectly, with that nice chewy consistency that udon is known for. The seafood udon was also well-prepared in terms of udon texture, but the broth was quite mild, and there wasn’t much depth to the flavour. The seafood itself seemed fresh, but one area they really fell short was the shrimp—it wasn't deveined. As someone who cooks at home, I know that deveining shrimp is an important step, both for presentation and to avoid any off-putting taste. In this day and age, there are pre-cleaned shrimp options readily available at most grocery stores, so seeing the shrimp served with veins still intact made me question the attention to detail and overall quality control in their kitchen. It was a small detail, but one that left a negative impression. Aside from the shrimp issue, the udon itself was quite nice. The udon were bouncy with a pleasant chew, and it was clear that they know how to cook their noodles well. The portions were generous, and the ingredients used seemed fresh, which I appreciated. The atmosphere and the quality of the udon noodles were definitely the highlights of the experience. However, despite these positives, the overall experience felt a bit underwhelming. The lack of spice in dishes that were marked as spicy was a major letdown, and the menu itself didn't offer anything particularly unique or exciting that would make me want to return. The options were quite basic, and while they were executed adequately, there was nothing that really stood out or differentiated Mikaku Udon Bar from other Japanese restaurants in the area. Given the competitive landscape of Japanese cuisine, especially in a city with so many great options, I think it's important for a restaurant to have a signature dish or a unique twist that makes it special, and unfortunately, I didn’t find that here. Overall, while the food was okay, and the atmosphere was lovely, there wasn’t enough to make me want to come back. The menu options felt quite standard, and similar dishes can easily be found at other Japanese restaurants—many of which offer a bit more in terms of flavour and creativity. If you're looking for a cozy spot with decent udon, it might be worth a visit, but if you're after bold flavours or something truly memorable, you may want to explore other options. xx kellychan360

Mikaku Udon Bar – is it a Japanese restaurant? A Korean restaurant? Or a love child of the two? Well, let's just say it's a culinary fusion that's as confusing as it is delicious. We, the three udon enthusiasts, ventured into this quirky little eatery on a busy Friday night. The place was buzzing, and we quickly snagged a table. Our orders were placed: a Spicy Cream Udon (a seafood extravaganza), a Ma-La Udon (a fiery Chinese-inspired dish), and the ever-popular Chicken Curry Udon. The staff were friendly, if a bit lost in translation. But hey, a smile goes a long way, right? The dining room was a strange mix of modern art and minimalism, which is a style choice, I guess. Now, let's talk food. The Ma-La Udon was a spicy sensation. The pork and shrimp were a delightful duo, and the mushrooms added a mysterious depth of flavour. It was spicy, but in a good way –we loved every spicy bite. The Curry Udon, on the other hand, was a bit of a letdown. It was watery, lacking in chicken, and overall a bit underwhelming. But hey, we'd still order it again, just to see if it could redeem itself. The Spicy Cream Udon was... interesting. It was a bit too fishy for our taste, and we're not sure what the sea creatures were thinking when they agreed to be in this dish. It was a valiant effort, but a 6/10 at best. Overall, Mikaku Udon Bar is a fun and quirky place to eat. Would we travel far to eat here? Maybe not. But if you're in the neighborhood and looking for a unique dining experience, give it a shot. Just be prepared for the bathroom to greet you with a warm "Welcome."

Been wanting to try this place out for some time and it was even better than I’d hoped! My partner and I got the chicken curry udon and it was amazing. Chicken is crispy and not oily at all, noodles are chewy and delightful. I do wish there were more noodles in the dish than bok choy however it added a sweet crunch to contrast with the noodles. The curry was very flavourful, not spicy at all. Restaurant is pretty small so best to arrive before busy times to secure a spot. Staff were very welcoming and friendly, prices are decent for the quality of the meal. Definitely coming back!

Huge fan of the udon texture here. A lot of places serve overcooked udon but the udon here is delightfully chewy and has a satisfying bite. I wish they had a simple cold dipping udon option so I could just enjoy the noodles on their own. The flavours are definitely a little more unique and not “traditional” Japanese style which makes sense as this is a fusion place. The curry udon sauce is one of our favourites and is super creamy and rich but if you’re not feeling well, it can leave a bit of an unpleasant feeling in your throat as I found out recently due to the richness of the cream. However, I will sometimes just suddenly get a big craving for this udon. Something about the flavour and texture just keeps me coming back. The chicken on top is also crispy and juicy. Maze udon flavour is good but the portion was a bit on the smaller side. It does come with a bowl of rice afterwards to soak up the sauce though which is a nice touch. For both udons, I just wish it came with more noodles or an option to add extra as the portions are not super big. Chicken karaage is crispy and flavourful although I wish they had given us more sauce as it’s good. And again, portion for this was also quite small especially for the price point of $12.99. Place is not very big so if you go during peak hours, there may be a bit of a wait. The AC can also be strong in there so it’s chilly. Service overall was good and efficient.

Just tried this new local spot and loved it! Definitely my new favourite for sit down food in the area and great Udon overall. We had the Rose Udon which was creamy and delicious as well as the braised beef Udon which was equally as good. The fried squid was also way better than I was expecting- light batter, not too heavy, and overall tasty. Cheesecake was also delicious! Back patio atmosphere and service was lovely, I have only good things to say. So glad this place opened and we will definitely be regulars here! ☺️

Pretty decent udon bar. For me the value for money at udon places in general have never been the greatest, but this one was pretty decent. We ordered the buta udon and the spicy cream udon, and both were really good. The amount of seafood in the bowl was pretty decent. We also decided to try the onigiri which was really tasty with bits of ground pork in it. Atmosphere is okay overall but there is a bit of a cold draft in the place in specific spots. Service was good too - our server was really helpful explaining what things in the menu consisted of.

I think this place is 3.5 stars - flavourful, but not proportional to the value, effort, taste and service scale. Taste wise: 4/5 curry katsu - very flavourful and thick sauce. The chicken katsu is nice and soft. Also had the infamous maze udon - if u love green onions and leek, this is the to have! The last little sauce at the end with rice is heavenly. Portion size: 2/5. strinkation is real? The udons are about half the size what I can compare from udons I am familiar with. The bowl size of the katsu is deceiving! The bowl is super shallow. IMO not worth the value when with tax each bowl of udon comes to about $20. Service wise 3/5 - came here around 6pm on a weekday and was seated quickly. Little/ no interaction to the waiters Tbh. When I almost finished the maze udon, the waiter just handed me a bowl of rice with no explanations. If I had not read reviews before hand I would be baffled to why I have a bowl of rice. Overall feeling: delicious to get an udon fix - flavourful, but not wow’ed. Portion is tiny. I will not come back again.

Delicious udon spot in Richmond Hill! I got the maze udon and my partner got the buta udon. They were both very flavourful and comes with unlimited pickled side dishes. The server was very pleasant and helpful as well! Edited - Returned once after a long time and had to lower my initial review to 2/5 stars. Had the maze udon again but wont be returning ever. Portion size was small and pricey. It was a good deal before when they first opened as they gave you some side dishes with a review. Now, the price does not justify the taste and size. Will not be returning

I had seafood udon and spicy cream udon. The seafood udon tasted like Nagasaki champon, with a generous portion and a rich flavor. The spicy cream udon was just as delicious as its famous for always a reliable choice! The cream wasnt too heavy, thanks to the slight spiciness, making it an addictive flavor. The side of chicken karaage was also perfect to stimulate the appetite. The parking lot was spacious, which made it convenient, and I loved the cozy atmosphere. I d definitely recommend it as a great spot for a date.

Loved the maze udon which is a pretty hard to find in Toronto, especially one that taste as good as this. The udon noodles are cooked nicely and bouncy and the scoop of rice at the end to absorb the remaining sauce is the cherry on top. The spicy cream udon is also creamy and rich with a good amount of seafood.

Check the restaurant hours before you go. Opens at noon, closes between 3p-4:30p for a break, then reopens and closes at 9pm, last call to order was 7:30p. Closed all day Monday and open every other day. Located at the very back of the plaza. And with a small dinning room area, seats about 25 ppl total. There are 4 booths (seats 4) and 5 small tables (seats 2). We were 4 ppl and waited at least 20-25mins, even though ppl who arrived after us were getting a table, since they were only a party of 2, they got a table quicker than a party of 4. Theres a sign in sheet for a seat, good concept actually. Punk rock style of music playing at a loud volume which brings an interesting vibe to the place. We order both traditional broth and no broth udon to try. The broth has a food taste, a bit peppery, the ingredients are what make the soup tasty. The maze udon no broth was the best taste for us. I probably wouldn t go again.

Mikaku Udon Bar is a delightful gem that brings authentic Japanese cuisine to life in every dish. Upon entering, you re greeted with a warm, inviting atmosphere that perfectly balances modern elegance with traditional touches. The minimalist décor, accentuated by subtle Japanese motifs, sets a serene tone for the dining experience. I had the pleasure of trying the Chicken Karaage and Seafood Udon, and both were exceptional. The Chicken Karaage was perfectly crispy on the outside and incredibly juicy on the inside, seasoned to perfection. It made for an excellent appetizer that whetted my appetite for the main course. The Seafood Udon was a standout, featuring perfectly chewy noodles in a rich, savory broth with a generous portion of fresh seafood. Each bite was a delightful mix of flavors and textures, showcasing the quality of ingredients and meticulous preparation. Mikaku doesn t just excel in udon; their side dishes and appetizers are equally impressive. The gyoza, with its crispy exterior and juicy filling, and the seaweed salad, light and refreshing, complement the main courses beautifully. The attentive and knowledgeable staff enhance the dining experience, providing excellent recommendations and ensuring a pleasant visit. Overall, Mikaku Udon Bar is a haven for udon enthusiasts and Japanese food lovers alike. Its dedication to quality, authenticity, and customer satisfaction makes it a standout dining destination. Hands down the best place for udon in the area! This was my first time visiting Mikaku and I m blown away by the food, flavours, and service. The flavours were unmatched- the Curry was thick, creamy, and paired so well with the noodles and crispy chicken. The Maze udon was an experience in it of itself- from mixing all the ingredients together, to the extra bowl of rice served (in order to finish off the yummy sauce once the noodles are eaten), I ve never had such a well thought out dish. The service was also excellent- the servers were very attentive to how we were enjoying our meals and made sure we got the memo on how to properly eat the Maze udon. I can already tell this will be a staple place I will come back to time and time again- bravo and see you again soon!

There are customers coming in after us as well. 224pm we were told last order pls order 1 shot whatever we want like NOW. 245pm rudely told us we closing at 3pm loudly to everyone. Fairly rude not apologetic at all. I understand u want to off work on time but still no excuses to treat customer this attitude came here cos a youtuber recommended. Service was meh, but the curry udon was really yummy. Will i come back again? Yeah if im round the corner perhaps. Hopefully the employee can reflect their behaviour so customers can have better experience.

My husband and I went there on Thursday night to grab a quick dinner. The restaurant was packed. The waitress was nice enough to clear up the bar area to fit us in. There were only 2 chefs working but they were very efficient with the order. Our vegan Udon was amazing. The broth was rich and thick and came out steamy hot. I will definitely go back. Mikaku Udon Bar is a cute little restaurant that has a range of flavors on their tasty yet simplistic menu. Food: The food came out quick and is quite reasonably affordable however if you have a big appetite, Id suggest to order a little something extra! Chicken Curry Udon (Soup-less) - A thick and creamy base, topped off with crispy chicken with green onions to garnish. The flavour is rich, and pairs perfectly with the different textures that the dish carries. Udon was perfectly cooked and carried a nice chew and bounce. The chicken was still crispy and steaming hot. Nice and hearty but does get a little salty if you prefer your food on the lightly salted end. 8/10 Maze Udon (Soup-less) - Udon with special sauce, dried bonito, minced pork, green onion, chives, garlic, dried seaweed, egg yolk, and sesame. Vinegar is put on the side incase you want to add it in. Once you finish the noodles, a bowl of rice is delivered for you to mix the leftover sauce with. Its like a 2 in 1 dish! This was my favourite dish by far as it was so umami. You definitely need to try this dish! 9.5/10 Tako Wasabi (Side) - Diced octopus salad. Tastes pretty similar to most Ive had but has a kick of freshness to it. Loved snacking on this before our dishes came 7.5/10 Chicken Karaage - boneless crispy fried chicken. 7.5/10 Note: also received a side dish of pickled cucumber/celery and cabbage salad per person. Great way to balance out the saltiness of the heavier dishes. Service - Quick and Kind. 9/10 Atmosphere - Small and quaint with a modern yet homey vibe. As long as it doesnt get too busy I quite like it there. 8/10 Free parking lot

Food was amazing and the environment reminded me of udon bars I went to in Japan. However service could use some work. The staff was friendly, however one of our orders was wrong and another was forgotten. At the end of the meal they tried to charge us a second time. They could also really use a better queuing system during busy hours.

I stopped by on a saturday evening w/ my gf for dinner. Theres ample space in the parking lot and the resto is located in the same plaza as The North Taiwanese Restaurant. Very cozy spot w/ bar seating, some booth and a few tables. As for the menu, its quite simple and no frills. We got takoyaki, chicken curry udon and maze udon. Takoyaki: The outside was crispy on some pieces but soggy on some. Not too consistent. Flavour of the dough was good. Well seasoned. The octopus couldve been more tender. A decent takoyaki but Ive had better. Maze udon: Very good! The give you some rice after you finish your udon to mix w/ the leftover goodies and sauce in the bowl. Its considered mild spicy (I thought it was mild as well) but my gf thought that the spice built up over time haha. Chicken curry udon: Super rich and creamy. The chicken cutlet was also juicy and fried well. I wish they wouldve given more chicken but the udon itself was good and the curry sauce was delicious. Idk if the udon is made in house or not but the food tasted good! This place is on par w/ Zen Sanuki Udon in Scarbs (my friend swears they have the best udon but I couldnt taste that much of a difference). I do like that this place is a lot cheaper than Zen Sanuki though.

I ordered the chicken curry udon, and it was absolutely delicious! I ve never had curry udon before, and this place 100% sold me. They have a lean but varied menu, and prices are alright - cheaper than Sansotei for sure. The curry itself I found a little bit to the sweeter side, but otherwise had great flavour. It s thick and creamy, and clings on to the udons great. The chicken was fried and wasn t too dry (or at least with the sauce? The sauce was very thick, and cover any imperfection if there were any). Despite what it looks like in my picture, it was a decent portion, and given the heaviness of the curry, I think they portioned it just right. I had wished that they had a spicy curry udon, but unfortunately they only have one with seafood (I tend to avoid seafood due to personal preference). Not their fault though! The place was incredibly clean, workers weee very well mannered and caring, and service was quick. I have nothing but positives to say about this place. Definitely give it a try to see if this is your jam.

Not impressed by average tasting food, lack lustre service. The other reviews commenting on the customer service and tipping the waitresses make me laugh because theyre accurate. Whats the point of providing minimal service and then peering over your customers as they select their tip options? The Chicken Karaage could not be smaller in size, wasnt flavourful in the slightest- needed more salt at the least. Udon noodle sizes will leave you hungry. I feel like a man can easily eat 2 bowls worth. Not impressed in the slightest with the taste of the Udon soups nor dry Udon (Maze).

Mikaku Udon Bar is an intimate space that can fill up quickly during peak hours. There is a beautiful mural along one side of the dining area and the staff were very attentive. What we got: - Chicken Karaage - Maze Udon - Spicy Cream Udon My Favs: I really enjoyed the spicy cream udon, more than I thought I would! It was creamy but because the sauce was soupier in consistency I didnt find it too heavy or thick. The seafood was well cook, in particular the shrimp, and there is bacon in the sauce making it taste similar to a carbonara. It also comes with a few slices of baguette to soak up remaining sauce and some small plates of pickles and coleslaw that helped cut through the creaminess. Final thoughts: My first dining experience at Mikaku exceeded my expectations and Ill definitely be back to try more. I think the price for the portion size is definitely on the higher end (this would be 5 stars if the meal was a few dollars cheaper), but I still really enjoyed it.

The food was ok and nothing special to talk about it furthermore the portion is way to small compare other udon shop, we this is our first time finished our food in 7 mins and moreover there ain t people waiting and there is at least two table was empty and the waitress gave us the bill right away after we finished our food and take the dishes away even we didn t ask for the bill, that s why I gave 1 star only. Taking the order and grabbing it from the kitchen is probably something kids can even do. Tips are not mandatory by law, and if the restaurant wants customers to give tips (with a specific amount), i suggest to have an automatic gratitude amount to be added in the total. For the waitress that demanded more tips, if you wanted to ask for money, you shouldve been doing it in the streets instead.

Mikaku Udon Bar is a small, intimate Japanese restaurant that specializes in udon! I love me some udon, so you know I had to try them out. Ive come here on three separate occasions, and each time was very good. Its strongly recommended to make a reservation or arrive during non-peak hours, because the restaurant itself is pretty small (less than 10 tables) and they get pretty busy after 6pm. Almost all the tables are also for smaller parties (2-4 people). Ive gotten the maze udon, spicy seafood udon, and oden udon. Out of all of them, the maze udon might be my favourite - its something unique and not soupy/creamy like the others and love the flavour! The price is also OK. Youre looking at about $16-19 for each bowl of udon. It comes with some preserved veggies as a side dish too. If Im craving udon, this is definitely one of my go-tos! Other options are in Toronto or North York, which are just a bit too far for me.

Their popular dishes all seem delicious so it was hard to decide, but I ended up choosing the Maze Udon. It had really good flavours and lots of sauce - I liked it more than I expected. The udon noodles had the perfect chewiness and the rice bowl at the end was a nice touch to get all the sauce. My bf got the spicy cream udon and it was my favourite. Super delicious sauce with a good level of spice. However, he said the seafood wasn t fresh. Our friend got the chicken curry udon and the sauce was also creamy with really great flavour. The vegetarian udon was amazing with a crunchy rice biscuit on the side. Together with their pickled vegetables (side dish), it was amazing combo. No after sour taste. The pork was skewed before serving. So that was nice with soya like soup base. Oden undone also gave good variety of korean street snacks like fish cakes n rice cakes etc. Oniguri also nice and flavorful. Disappointed that they kept on trying to take our bowls before we finished n even did so with our daughters food when she was in the bathroom. Note....we were there for late lunch. Arrived 2.20 and left by 3pm. I know they close by 3pm but we finished before then. So this times experience was not as nice as our previous. Vegetarian options: Vegetarian udon
