1001 W Grace St, Richmond, VA 23220, United States
Serving Richmond's finest and funkiest since 1956.
I had breakfast here on a Sunday. It's a quaint restaurant/diner. The staff are very nice and it's a relaxed atmosphere. The food is good and all menu items are available throughout the day.
I was looking for a good breakfast place and I found the village cafe. Big portions of food. Food was good. I ordered the western omelette, with the bread and cheese grits, I prefer creamier grits but if you like the original grits then it was good. My friend ordered a burger, but I don’t remember the name of it. He said it was pretty good but he said the mc n cheese was not that good. Maybe he prefers more creamier and cheesier mc n cheese…? Not sure but I would suggest to go ahead and try it for yourself and tell me what you think! I would definitely come back again, I love the atmosphere and everyone is very nice.
Great place to visit. The hospitality was great and so was the service. The food was really good as well. I got corned beef Hash and eggs with rye toast. Very good very flavorful as well. I will definitely be in here again.
Atmosphere, prices and speed of service were good. Staff were all friendly but our server Lily was great. Food was just okay and it was disappointing they couldn't provide any real butter from the kitchen. Only option was whipped butter that had been sitting in the sun in the window. With so many breakfast options in town I won't come back. Husband also said there was a roach walking in the men's bathroom.
This was a great place to stop and unwind in Richmond! Food was amazing! Drinks were even better! Staff was extremely friendly.
We went to village so much while at VCU. A true Richmond staple. Breakfast is amazing. The pizza fries, buffalo chicken wrap, milkshakes… ugh its alllll delicious!
My special order of well done (not runny) eggs was actually listened to and delivered. The home fries were nice and soft on the inside and crispy (in parts) on the out. Generous portions. The breakfast bowl was also good. I’m not particularly photosensitive, but first thing in the morning with the ceiling fans going, where we were sitting, it was weirdly strobe-y.
The Village Cafe is a cool, divey little spot in RVA that has been around forever. The menu is eclectic and huge and includes breakfast all day. We ordered fish and chips and chicken fingers and took advantage of their super-reasonable happy hour drink specials. The food was perfectly fried and service was good. You get a lot of food at a good price.
French toast and breakfast platter never disappoints. Shoutout to the bartenders and servers for excellent service on a busy day!
Food is good and service was prompt. Floors, surfaces, and tables could definitely be cleaner
The spot to eat and drink with locals in the city. And has remained that way for decades. Prominent location for a reason. Stop in and grab a bite!
Excellent place to grab a bite to eat with a variety of options to choose from!
Great late night spot or when you want that comfort meal. The staff is friendly & feels very inclusive. We love the cheese spaghetti!
My omelette was supposed to have cheese I couldn t taste and onions that were long like noodles. Not a good look. The place is clean and in a nice area though.
The food was very good. It feels a little snug but the booths had enough room. Our waiter was friendly.
I made a stop in Richmond for a few hours on my way home from Montreal after the eclipse. I got a really good breakfast here. Interesting decoration that s not the usual. But it s a good thing. It was crowded but I suspect there s a lot of energy when it is.
Great place! Food was awesome - I had the calzone. Melt in your mouth, flavorable, and huge, Service was impeccable! Parking: Free parking on the weekend.
The food is standard diner fare, but prepared with care. Ive eaten here for over a decade, and Ive never been disappointed by a plate. The one thing keeping it from 5 stars is the steep increases in prices over the years, especially compared to other VCU campus-area restaurants. Great draft selection, and competent bartenders. A Richmond staple.
Love going to the Village when we visit our son at school. Great food, very friendly staff and great atmosphere. They also handled our sons food allergy fantastically.
The food is really good here but quite simply if you haven t had a milkshake here you are missing out. It s what they are known for. The atmosphere especially on VCU game days is something else though.
Awesome food, atmosphere, service. Big portions. Could not have been happier
Excellent breakfast and service!
Very chill spot. I only had their breakfast but it came out fast, fresh, hot and the price was reasonable. All W s
Great College Dive/Diner.
First time there. Went for Sunday breakfast. Service was great, and people were nice. Prices were reasonable. The place look clean and well kept. Food was fine. I dont know what a wow breakfast is, but the food tasted good. If I lived in the area I would definitely go back.
So this is probably the third or so time that my family and I have eaten here while visiting family in Richmond. You cant beat the atmosphere. It is very cool and eclectic. The servers are very nice and attentive. Only downside is they can get rather crowded, and its pretty expensive by Richmond standards.. For example, our bill for one calzone, one grilled cheese sandwich, one side order of fries, one slice of apple pie, 2 sodas and and a cup of coffee was nearly $100 with tip.
Excellent food and service.
Lots of fun
AC is on to high. I eat out exclusively. Around 1k every month. Usually at the bar here. Bar service is dedicated to the personal friends of bar staff almost every night. So service for regular customers come second to friends of bar staff. Portions are massive. It may be the culture. I never doggie bag and I only eat out. So I order infrequently here now. For some reason bar tender said he was told not serve me any longer without any explanation. I have many other places to done out in Richmond. I probably should cut this place off once theyve started charging me for water and over charging. Ive dined in over four continents in three hundred cities plus. Charge for water? I wont miss the village
if i could give this place 0 stars, i would. i ve been here 3 times. first 2 times were great!!! the 3rd time, i had a different waitress who cussed me out, insulted my friends and i, chased me out of the restaurant, and got in my face. as a restaurant that has college signs inside their business everywhere , i can t believe that s how they treat students. i am a server of 3+ years myself and i can t even imagine talking to a customer (let alone anyone) the way i was talked to. ive never had an issue with anything at any restaurant ive been to and i am always a great guest because im a server and i know how it is. after i left, my friends and i were so upset that we decided to call the manager and let them know what happened. the manager is extremely rude and unprofessional so if something is wrong with your experience at this restaurant, don t even try to have it be resolved. i would love to come back, but i would fear for my safety if that waitress was there. i suggest steering clear of the tall, tattooed, dark haired white waitress .
The atmosphere and staff were amazing! They were super nice and timely. The food was okay, it wasnt anything special. I likely wouldnt go here again unless someone I was going out with wanted to.
Stopped in here for Sunday brunch. It was such a quaint place. Had an old downtown feel to it!
Cornbeef hash was good, but could use more cornbeef & would order again..
I notice that the seating for blacks were placed in the back an upstairs as if they were finding them.
I was very disappointed coming to this restaurant for brunch, especially with their great reviews. They paid no attention to dietary restrictions, putting bacon on top of eggs when we specifically asked for them on a separate plate. The host was rude and when we asked for a section change after being placed on the incredibly claustrophobic second floor, we were initially dismissed. The food was okay, but not worth the price. Consider skipping here if you have dietary restrictions. Dietary restrictions: They were not able to accommodate, they did not put pork on a separate plate and did not make any effort to remake the dish when it was pointed out.
Maaan this place was sweet, our server was great, the service was quick as well. The food here was amazing you gotta try their mac and cheese, and the whole place had a nice relaxing atmosphere even the employees were having a good time.
Michael treated us with care and respect and kept an atmosphere of good humor. 5 stars for the service, Ill be back again for Michael.
Food is always amazing and so is the quick service. There is plenty to choose from on the menu. Only downside is the area of the location l, its kinda scary.
Awesome place for Sunday brunch. Great food, great mimosas and the best bloody Mary Ive ever had.
Breakfast was good service was very good
Vibrant atmosphere, great service, delicious food, recommend the tropical bowl
Best place to get breakfast in Richmond
Classic college place packed out on two floors. Menu has it all, including breakfast. Open face turkey sandwich with gravy has saved me more than once.
Not many spots around serve a full menu late (after 9pm). Extensive menu and Ive always had great service.
Weve been here twice now, and have been so impressed both times. The menu has so many vegan options, and as someone with a dairy intolerance, I havent been able to have pancakes or French toast or biscuits at a restaurant for years - until I found 821 Café! Everything weve ordered has been so good, and the prices are really reasonable - well be back. :)
Very attentive. Bartender was meticulous and courteous with his service. Even though I wasnt drinking. I had a delicious omelette. Lorraine XMR!!. Lightning-like preparation and absolutely delicious. Footlong telephone lines with delicious Swiss cheese. I walked out of there. Very satisfied. Good vibes. Thank you for representing Richmond with beautiful culture and graciousness.
They were so incredible!
Lot of menu variety and yummy milkshakes. Friendly service. I usually like getting some breakfast food but got a nice burger last time
Cute place. Service was excellent and the food was fresh, hot, and delicious
Great food and atmosphere. The menu has sufficient vegetarian options. We enjoyed the spinach and feta omelette and French toast.
Best breakfast iv had in a while, Literally die and went to heaven but remembered I had to finished an 3D game assignment, Got reincarnated into the omelette I ate myself here, I never go to finished my work but god damn was happier than ever
The food was so good, I thought God Himself was in the kitchen making the food. Incredible atmosphere that combines old school with new cool and quick service. We were seated immediately and got our drink orders in less than a minute. The wait for the food was quick - you wont be sitting for 30 minutes waiting here. The food itself is not only delicious, but reasonably priced and filling. My breakfast plate was only 9.95!! If youre considering going here, throw the other options out of the window and go here. Its fantastic.
Great food & service Dietary restrictions: I m a heart transplant patient and staff was very informed about the food and ingredients plus preparation Food : 5/5 |
Good food
The breakfast quesadilla is fabulous. Probably the best breakfast quesadilla I ve had. Will definitely be back.
Excellent food and service
My 1st visit This place is Awesome We loved everything About it from the decor service food prices And they serve Breakfast all day I highly recommend
Great food!
The food was awesome and the place was packed. I love the drinking little pitchers they gave us.
Best pancakes in Richmond! The milkshakes were a little too sweet but service was very fast. I would recommend.
Food was great! Excellent variety of food choices.
GREAT Waiter with the absolute best attitude and smooth service! Mi esposo says the burger was one of the best he ever had and hes a burger nut! Said it was the best bun ever. If were in Richmond again expect to see us there. Parking: No problemo. Kid-friendliness: We had two youngsters with us and they were very happy!
Reviews say it all! Did not disappoint, great service and breakfast was very good.
STROMBOLI IS AMAZING! Vegetarian options: Can t go wrong with anything on the menu Food : 5/5 |
In town for VCU expo and walked 2 blocks to the Village Cafe for lunch. The place was busy but there were a few tables available. Good quick service and the food was above average. The only thing I didnt like about this place was the extra charge for using a credit card.
I love this restaurant the food is really good its just a short walk from where I live I love their club sandwich and their fries are crispy and delicious I also love their country fried steak with sausage gravy
Seems like a classic and a staple close to VCU
We ordered too much food but it was fun to try a few things. Nachos with steak, ham and cheese croissant with onion rings, fries covered in cheese and a chocolate peanut butter milkshake. Nachos were great, if you don t like a lot of sour cream get it on the side. Ham and cheese was full of flavor and loaded with cheese (wish I asked for mayo on it), onion rings - delicious especially dipped in their ranch. The loaded fries were great, especially like that they toasted the cheese on top of the fries (it s a big plate). Lastly the milkshake; big thick milkshake - well worth it. The menu is huge and we ll definitely go back for other items.
Delicious & reasonably priced. Feels like home, if that makes sense.
I was here for the first time almost 40 years ago. Always good, location and ambience.
We went for breakfast on a busy morning, servers were friendly and good came out quickly despite them being packed. Lorraine omelet was delicious and portion was big
Chic place with good food and friendly service.
Love this place, great breakfast
Excellent
Years ago it was across the street where Roots is now (reference photo on menu). Being a local staple: pretty much everything on the menu has been galvanized to an unquestionably legitimate iteration (its the way most folk love like it). Furthermore, for nearly the entirety of my life its been a place to camp out and nurse a coffee for a few hrs before some important (or benign) engagement. Or just a good place to get some eggs and try to make sense of how it all got here. Also, theres a jukebox.
Excellent choices and delicious food! Peach cobbler a la mode was sooo good, rock fish w fries was one of best. Place is very popular and it was a bit loud but once you get your food nothing matters.
Maybe the most foul mimosa pitcher Ive ever tasted... Sort of gave prosecco mixed with water... The hash browns were oddly sweet (???) but the pancakes and country fried steak were okay
Hip student friendly dinner serving all day breakfast.
Great food and service. Booths are tight! Vegetarian options: Great black bean burger! Food : 5/5 |
You can never go wrong with Village Cafe!
Been first time in this place! I moved recently in that neighborhood. Very nice and clean place, staff is very friendly and my salad with chicken was great! Prices were good, happy was good! Definitely will comeback there! Recommended place in the center of Richmond.
Always good, always the vibe!
Just had time for a beer. Still has a great vibe.
Disgusting!!!!. Dirty, old and the food is even worse. Rock Fish Po Boy sandwich was disgusting. Sent it back. Fish was fried in dirty oil and it was more breading than fish. Mac and cheese was watery. Overall, a TERRIBLE experience.
The build your own omelet was incredible. Good food, good portions, good drinks
For 30 years, I have been coming back to the Village for good food! Its unique atmosphere is always welcoming and always great service! I will continue for the next 30!
Maxwell was friendly, attentive and overall a great server! This was definitely a good vibe with good food and worth the stop.
Not fancy food, but good food. We enjoyed the vibe on a Sunday afternoon in November. Warm, filling and flavorful. My husband was a very happy man after each course including delicious apple pie a la mode. Service was friendly and attentive.
Breakfast was delicious, and I was excited that you could buy a coffee mug or water pitcher. My only critique is that the fried apples were more warmed up than caramelized and friend.
Great food, slow but friendly service
Choice, eclectic college vibe. Big menu with something for everyone. Nice, caring staff. Love the regulars at the counter.
Good food. Good service. Loved the large drink pitchers. Only bad is finding parking.
This place has the vibe of a classic spot that s been around forever. They have a huge selection but the food is nothing special and the kitchen is slow.
We recently tried Village Cafe and we really liked it. The food was great and not overpriced. I liked that I could get breakfast anytime. The only negative I had was the music was so loud we couldnt really hear each other. Food
The food was ok. My potatoes couldve been cooked longer, but the atmosphere was great, and the service was good. I loved Arnold Palmer, probably one of the best Ive had, and thats all I order when i order drinks out.
We were in the area and we wanted something quick and easy for dinner. We saw the positive reviews for Village Cafe and decided to give it a try. We really liked it. Food and service were both great and the prices werent bad. Will definitely be going back. Food
The vegetarian burger and selection of toppings were fantastic. I really enjoyed it and I highly recommend this restaurant. Vegetarian options: Two different vegetarian burgers to choose from as well as a variety of toppings on said burger (one being an egg, which I highly recommend).
Always awesome!
Good place for breakfast in Richmond downtown.
Inexpensive food and an incredible experience to boot. Nothing fancy, but its exactly what you needed. Trust me. If theres a wait for a table, wait. Its worth it.
Cool little restaurant near VCU campus . The menu selection is unreal . You name it and its on their menu . Parking: Limited on street parking
Hit the spot after a night out on the town. Big selection and big portions.
Fun and eccentric atmosphere with great food and fast service!
The omelette could of used more cheese
Casual atmosphere with a super awesome server. Food was great. got the cheese spag, chocolate chip pancakes, bacon, beer, and brownie a la mode. The only bad thing is that I didn t know about this place sooner!
Quality service, excellent food. Please expand as the venu feels small
This place has some of the best fries that I ve ever had. My wife and I could not get enough. I got the BLT and Mac and cheese that were also very good. I will make a point to return here next time I m in Richmond. I might even make the 2 hour trip just to come back.
The food is a amazing, I had to stop in the middle of eating to right this review, Maxwell was great bartender and host go show the restaurant some love if your in Richmond
Food was good until I found hair on my toast. Manager came to address and was very nonchalant.....I dont even know his name. I will try again as Ive had their food before but the customer service will need to step up! Food
Always good!!
Super fast service here. We had breakfast food which I find similar every where. But the potatoes here were cooked perfectly and the biscuits were delicious. You need to get a milkshake to share because they re yummy and enormous. Also whoever was in charge of the music has great taste. Thanks.
It was a great and welcoming experience. It was very busy during our time there, but the server was very attentive. The price was fair and the food was delicious.
Ive been meaning to get a milkshake from there just to try it because I heard good things about them. Food and service have always been good for when I visit. I may visit soon for that shake.
Over all not a bad environment, chill staff, but, just as a warning, don t get the corn beef hash. Looks and taste like cat food.
The overall aesthetic was amazing, we were greeted & seated immediately. (Party of two) the food was delivered VERY quickly after ordering. However, I think the food could be flavored better.
Great food.....great atmosphere
Came here craving mozzarella sticks around 8pm on a weekday night. The fried cheese was delicious. The marinara sauce had good flavor. The cheese had a slight chew to it which was good. Bowl of vegetable soup was $4. Chocolate cake was really good especially with the chocolate drizzle for $5. Overall, a great value small 3 course meal for $19! Service was great and my waitress checked on me frequently.
Food was average and lackluster in flavor. Chicken was dry and the French toast was challenging to enjoy. The staff were EXTREMELY nice and welcoming! We had a 20 minute wait but when we got seated our service was exceptional. Solid performance for the price point.
My favorite place to eat in town!
Everything I go here I have a good time, the food is always delicious and filling and good portions also the staff has great customer service. The location is in the middle of the vcu area so parking can be difficult sometimes but I love the restaurant so I always come back
Great food and service. I had the loaded baked potato and teriyaki chicken wings which were amazing.
Really great breakfast. My wife got the breakfast bowl with the vegetarian saussage. I had the Meat omlette. Really terrific food! Dont park in the 7-11 parking lot behind the resturant, they will tow you. That was the only drawback is that the restaurant only has on street parking. But it wasnt busy at the time and I was easily able to find a parking place. Vegetarian options: ask to make any dish vegetarian. Even if its not listed they probably have an option for you.
Vegan options are pretty lacking unless you change the menu items a bunch. Good vegetarian options. Overall though the service was great and it s a good atmosphere to go with your family.
Best breakfast in RVA!
Good chicken tenders!
Good food, good service. Cool ambiance.
I cannot speak for their other options, but the breakfast sandwich on a biscuit I had with hash browns was putrid. Hash browns are pitiful and the sandwich was soggy.
Busy establishment , staff was on board ,great portions of food ,drinks. Server; Mr.Jared was on point.
Honestly its been a while since I dined here. Cooks & menus come & go. Its always been a popular hangout especially with a certain crowd..I suspect it will be open as long as the current owners desire. Note though- Its not the Original Village Cafe. That was across the street on the other corner. Legends dined there, now juz wanna -bes.
Bacon was perfect. Eggs, coffee, and bisquit were good. Pancake was excellent.
Great food, fast service, decent portion sizes and fair prices. We went on a weekday morning so it wasn t too busy. Parking was close by as well. We even got mini souvenir pitchers. Nice variety of options for food as well.
Best dinner in the fan. Always worth a stop.
Visiting Richmond for the day so we stopped by for food here first, and it was awesome! I had a super specific craving for a cheesy hot dog baked potato and the server was happy to make it happen, and it was SO good! I really appreciate the flexibility, it was delicious!
These aren t hash browns bruh these are home fries. What if I was suicidal?
We stopped in here for breakfast on our way out of Richmond and I am very glad we did! The food and service were both excellent, highly recommended!
Been going there for years, reliable place for food and drinks
This place is very narrow( old building) which makes it not extremely baby friendly. They have pretty affordable prices which contributes to the quality of ingredients they are using. The water tasted like tap water and made me sick. The rice was totally overcooked( did not even taste good), my hash browns were fried in some cheap oil( prob soy, corn or sunflower). I didn t feel extremely happy about eating their food even though it looks good on the picture . If you are very health-conscious person, then you re not gonna like the quality of food, they serve there .
Visiting from out of town and landed at Village Cafe. Great atmosphere, good, food and drinks, and our server Michael was fantastic!!
Vegetarian options: Huge hummus platter for super cheap. Food
