I've had dinner at Peter Chang's many times and tried quite a few of the menu items. The Bubble Pancake is always a good starter and the kids love it. Speaking of kids, some of the main dishes pack a spicy tongue numbing punch and children may not be ready for that. For appetizers I always get the Dry-Fried Eggplant and the Bamboo Fish. Those are both similarly seasoned with cilantro and some pretty potent hot pepper🌶️ flakes that will ruin your taste buds for the rest of the dinner if you are not careful. It's a love/ hate thing for me with the heat. Peter Chang's hot seasoning is a different kind of hot than a hot sauce. I literally couldn't taste anything after eating the Bamboo Fish (pictured) dish which I recently ordered as a meal size portion. Stick with the appetizer size portion on the Bamboo Fish. The Golden Mountain of Chicken or Mongolian Beef is very satisfying and "safe" for kids. My wife likes the Eggplant in Garlic Sauce (pictured). That's probably one of several vegetarian options. I've tasted it and it's good, but personally I wouldn't make it my main meal. All the soups I've tried are really good. The Crispy Pork Belly is delicious. Lots of menu items to explore, most with a spicy flare. Some of the original charm of Peter Chang's has worn off for me, but it's still a unique Asian style restaurant that stands out in the crowd. Service was good. The restaurant can get pretty crowded and tables are maybe a bit too close together for some who prefer more privacy.
First off, we had Madison as our server and she was fantastic! She really cared that we had a good experience and ordered the right items. After reading a slew of recent reviews that were negative on this place I almost didn’t go but I’m definitely glad I did. As Madison pointed out, if you’re coming here for standard Chinese food, you’re probably going to be disappointed because you’re paying twice as much for something you could get at any take out Chinese restaurant. This place specializes in Szechuan cuisine so make sure to order what they do best! We had the dry friend eggplant which was super tasty and I would highly recommend it. Crispy and seasoned to perfection with a slight kick. My only complaint was that the ratio of “toppings” like the green onion and Szechuan peppers was about equivalent to the eggplant. I would prefer to see more of the fried eggplant in there. The pork Bao buns are also amazing! The meat inside is seasoned super well already but the spicy garlic sauce on the side really knocks it out of the park, especially if you like a good kick of heat! Our entree was the three pepper beef which we loved as well! Definitely has a good amount of heat to it but the flavors are delicious! Again my only complaint here is that there was way more veggies and onions than beef which was a little disappointing because I was fishing for meat in the dish. Basically this place didn’t get 5 stars because I thought some of the ratios were off and also because it took a while once we were sat to get a waitress to come over but once we were going everything was very smooth. But as far as the taste, it was awesome! Excited to go back and try more of this menu!
Where can I start... service was amazing. It's like everyone there was family. Food, indescribable. And there was so much, with just the right amount of spice. My absolute favorite place for Asian Fusion.
Pork bao was quite good. Fried rice was ok, lo mein could have had more flavor. Portions were a normal size. As far as Chinese restaurants go, it was a pretty average experience. It met but did not exceed my expectations.
Absolutely exceptional Chinese Food! This restaurant could go up against the best that you would find in a large metropolitan city with a Chinatown! The Beef Chow Fun was the best we ever had. The noodles were super soft and tender and cooked to perfection. Our kid loved it! The New Zealand Lamb dish was unbelievable as the meat was very tender and seared really well. We ordered it with 0 spicy level. The onions on top of this dish was super tasty and crunchy too. The stir fry bok choy was solid. The only item we would skip for next time would be the steamed dumplings. We came on a Saturday night and didn’t have a reservation. The server was kind enough to seat us at a table near the bar. They also gave our toddler a booster seat so it would be easier for him to eat at the high top table. The food came out very fast (like 7 min or less) and both our server and bar tender were super attentive. We definitely will be back the next time we’re in Richmond!
Peter Chang in Scott’s Addition!!! Tonight, my husband and I had our engagement party tasting at Peter Chang In Scott’s addition. I first want to commend the ambience- the restaurant is open layout, clean, and had nice music. Secondly, as soon as I walked into the door, I was greeted by the staff who was expecting me and my husband for the tasting. The staff were excellent, they were constantly there to bring out plates, clean, and bag all of our leftovers. The manager even discussed with us how we could modify each dish and their spice levels to fit the needs of our guests. And lastly, the food was delicious definitely not as Americanized, as I was expecting like all of the other Chinese food restaurants in the Richmond area. Many of these dishes had authentic flavors like Szechuan and umami. All cooked to perfection. Presentation of all the food was excellent! Thanks again!!
Food was solid as was the atmosphere! The waiter was super attentive and never missed a beat. Had the tofu stir fryed mixed vegetables, crispy pork and tea smoked duck 👌 Would definitely visit again!
Happy hour specials were a really good value. We got an order of fried pork dumplings for $3, an order of spring rolls for $1.50 and pork belly for $5.00. I wasn't expecting such low prices for such amazing food. I saw that a lot of reviews saying that the service was bad bit we didn't experience any bad service. The waiter was pleasant and service was quick but not rushed. Be careful when ordering anything spicy. The jalapeño beef was at the top of my tolerance level and I tend to like trying the spiciest things on menus. I definitely broke a sweat and would not have been able to enjoy it if it were any spicier. There were about 9 very large entire jalapeño peppers that were cooked into the dish. The mushrooms and peppers combined with the beef and sauce were all perfect. My wife got the golden mountain chicken and it was crispy and sweet (in a good way). I took several bites of her meal to counteract the spicy beef. The dumplings were good but their sauces were some of the best I've had served with dumplings before. The pork belly was a very generous serving considering the price. It was served on a bed of cilantro and hot peppers(if you avoid eating the peppers there was no heat so both myself and my wife were able to enjoy it). We will definitely be back and are both looking forward to try some of the other items that jumped out to us on the menu like the lotus root stuffed with sticky rice and the sausage dishes that Andrew Zimmerman from bizarre foods has raved about.
The Arlington location is some of the best Chinese I ve ever had. This location is bland across the board and just disappointing unfortunately. We got takeout. Phone service was good and the order was ready quickly.
The best Chinese food in Richmond/Virginia. I still crave for it despite being in another state now.
Pretty expensive for what you get. Fried rice is great, beef and broccoli was good, the golden mountain chicken was dry and as chewy as shoe leather. 3 things to share between 2 people..$70.
I know it s Chinese food, but this kind of a grease pool is just insane.
the food is great and consistent. the service is awful.
Food excellent. Atmosphere too dark for me.
We came to this Peter Changs excited about the bamboo fish because we always order it takeout. After we were seated it took about 15 minutes for them to give us any service. After we ordered the food did come fast, but it was incredibly bad. The lowmein had no flavor and only tasted like soy sauce. Once I spoke to the waitress about it, she was helpful and offered us another dish. We ordered the fried rice as replacement and it had too much salt on it. The bamboo fish was still very good but the three pepper chicken came with almost no chicken, the plate was mainly onions. This was the worst experience we ve had here and unfortunately we will not be returning.
Best Chinese Ive ever had. Madison recommended the human chicken and it was absolutely delicious.
Went in for a quick dinner and since it was empty quick it was. As for food, I am being told that I lack the Southern reverence for the Goddess Sodium. The plates were over salted from the shredded duck to the szechuan Dan Dan noodles. Would not go again.
Beef chow fan was so disgusting. Online price stated $16.00, but in person price was $18.00. A 16 oz sprite can soda was $3.00. Not enough beef for the portion of food. Parking: Not even three parking spots available in front of the location.
did a dash pass order, it was very good. sizes of portions was plentiful and it tastes the way it should if you eat a lot of Chinese you know what I mean would go again
The food left a lot to be desired very plain and very dull the coke the soft drinks with $3.25 a piece very overpriced the customer service the guy who waited on us was not attentive at all we had to wait a long time for a box and our tickets I wont be going back there again extremely overpriced for the quality
Food was good but wasn t enough chicken in my lo main for $14 dollars all this peppers I literally have to dig for the chicken.
I am so disappointed with my food. I ve been to the short pump location but wanted to try the Scott s addition because it s closer to my house. The golden mountain chicken was so bland. No flavor in the sauce so I could only taste the breading. the rice tasted like it was old & dry. Unfortunately, I will not come back to this location.
This is the best Chinese I have had in a really long time. A must stop by if you are around Richmond. We would love the chef consider open a location in New Jersey
Food was off the chart! Madison served us and she was spectacular! So knowledgeable and made our lunch an amazing one. When we come back to Richmond we will be back!!!
I ordered from Uber eats This was my first time having this chinese food here. I find this to be my new go to restaurant. The food was really good its the closest you can come to compared to new jersey food. The only thing I didnt like so far was the wonton soup. One other thing the spring rolls are a bit small
I had heard good things about Peter Changs and so was okay with paying higher than normal prices for Chinese takeout. I will never be ordering from there again. We ordered general tsos chicken, fries rice, and three pepper beef and somehow it was all flavorless. The general tsos chicken was especially terrible. It was was somehow neon orange, dry, and mushy all at the same time.
Worst dumplings I have ever had. They were so bad I just threw them out after eating one. Never again
What a nice surprise this was for us. We were traveling and didn t know the area but did a little research and glad this restaurant could seat us. The portions were very generous and everything tasted great!
My work brought me here for a meetup/dinner. What a fantastic Sichuan restaurant. I got the Mapo Tofu with beef. Most places just give you a salty, red tofu/meat dish with a kick of spice. Peter Changs imbued it with their smokey Sichuan spice/chili blend present in the rest of their dishes, which brought it to the next level-- nice to see them giving love to such a humble dish. It speaks volumes about their attention to detail and consistency. Service was great, portions were generous for the price on most entrees. The James Beard award is well-earned, the food was comparable to Chengdu Gourmet, another famous James Beard awarded restaurant in Pittsburgh. I tried a few other dishes like the eggplant appetizer, all of them were fantastic. They dont push the Sichuan dishes on customers, but I really think they stand out and might even be taken for granted. Please give the authentic dishes a shot if you love spicy food, you wont be disappointed. The Hot & Numbing Beef is *crazy* spicy and delicious if you love very spicy foods.
I ordered the golden mountain chicken with fried rice and a side of vegetable rolls. The rice was really bland. The vegetable roles were okay-ish. As for the chicken, I m not sure if what I was eating was really chicken. I m sure it had some chicken in it but it didn t taste like chicken and it definitely didn t feel like I was chewing chicken. The flavor wasn t great either. I payed about 25 dollars for this meal. Honestly felt about as nutritious as a McDonald s McNuggets.
This is the 3rd an last. I tried them again. They use to be good but now I am not sure what the heck is going on. We ordered the chicken and broccoli and the chicken was tough and rubbery. Hunan beef watery and the 5 pepper chicken immediately went in trash after tasting. More heat than flavor.. I should have taken photo s. The only thing we could really tolerate was the wonton soup. I can certainly see why the rating is so low. I watch for ratings. There may be good days for people that eat in with a different chef. I always happen to get a wrong chef. The worst of the Asian food that I have had.Trust a several times person trying to get what they use to serve.
I love Sichuan food and Peter Changs does not disappoint. They also have a great smoked duck on fried onions that s mild. I love the Dan Dan Noodles, the crispy pork belly and the dry fried eggplant appetizers. The hot pot is flavorful and the whole fish is flaky and moist. Vegetarian options: They have vegetable dishes
THE OWNER HAS A GREAT ATTITUDE VERY NICE GUY
We went to this restaurant for mothers day, and the food was great!!Orange chicken was soo good!
Saying I was underwhelmed with the food would be an understatement. My girlfriend and I ordered two entrees and an appetizer to be delivered- the Golden Mountain Chicken, General Tsos Chicken, and the spring rolls. Both the entrees were inedible. Whatever sauce they used was simply disgusting. The spring rolls were okay, but they only gave us one single tiny packet of sauce with them, and it wasn t enough for 3 rolls. The fried rice was dry, and tasted bland with hardly any vegetables in it. We didn t even finish a 1/3 of our food, and ended up throwing it away. To top it off, they didn t even include any soy sauce with our order. Also, no fortune cookie! I m amazed this restaurant has 4.2 stars as a rating. Maybe they had a new cook in the kitchen preparing our dishes, but I m not spending another $50 to find out.
Parking: Street parking Food
Honestly pretty disappointed with the food. Maybe I came on a bad night but the food just wasn t up to par with the other reviews. I ordered king pow buns, vegetable spring rolls, egg drop soup, beef chow fun, and pork lo mein. The buns were just fine, the two dipping sauces saved them. Vegetable spring rolls were fine as well as the soup but the beef chow fun and pork lo mein were tasteless. I don t mean flavorless as in not spicy enough, I mean no discerning flavor at all besides a vague oiliness that there might have been a hint of sauce that was introduced. For the price I paid for everything plus tip for take out? I would not order again. It was just very disappointing
Groovy food
Good
It was a family hang out place every time we came from Georgia to Richmond. Well, not anymore. We were served a dish we didnt order by another server, not the one who took our order. They didnt want to take the dish back then charged us for it. A conversation with the manager went south. He simulated a call to the police as a threat, I suppose. Totally unqualified manager. We ended up paying for the dish, because it was not about money, its about integrity and customer service. Poor service, filthy bathrooms, rude manager. Server was sweet but disorganized. Not properly trained. Nope, not going back there if you ask me. You should stay away too, if you want to have a nice and respectful family dinner go somewhere else.
Great food. Hit the spot. Glad I came late at night on a Tuesday so it was very quiet in there. But as far as service our server was nice throughout but when I asked for a plastic ramekin for the dumpling sauce she brought me packets of soy sauce? And when I asked again, she argued with me that it wasn t vinegar ? But all I wanted was a plastic ramekin for the sauce (whatever it was) which she eventually brought me . She also forgot to bring us our order of soup dumplings otherwise it was a nice experience.
Generic chinese food. Tastes like a chain restaurant (think PF Changs or even Panda Express, for that matter). Dont understand what the hype is about, a waste of $150 (to feed three of us).
The server was very rude and we saw mouse running around. I would never go again.
Very nice valentine dinner. Everything was good ah. Ordered pretty much finger food. Large portions.
Let me just say that this place has the BEST SOUP DUMPLINGS IN THE WORLD! Customer service was excellent. The soup dumplings that come from here is by far the most flavorful food I have ever had in my life. Kudos to the chef!
It s Chef Peter Chang enough said. We ve yet to be disappointed in any dish.
Smells amazing in here. Food is quick and good quality.
Surprisingly good. Chinese food but all quality ingredients.
You need to try the Golden Mountain Chicken! What a great dish! And the steamed Pork Bao buns were delicious, too!
Havent been there in ages. Got there early, my companion and I. We had the Kung party chicken buns for a starter. 2 sauces, one spicy, the other ginger/garlic. Great beginning. My companion had a beef dish for which she substituted tofu. I had the shrimp and scallop Kung pao.. We both had brown rice. We were both extremely satisfied. Brian was our waiter. Must knowledgeable about the offerings and forthcoming with suggestion, all spot on. The food was delivered to our table in a most timely matter.
Nice atmosphere, courteous staff especially the server Ms. Tanya, quick delivery of appetizers and entrees, and follow-up by server after bringing the entrees. A very pleasant dinner experience for 4 individuals. Dietary restrictions: gluten-free entrees available
the dry fried green beans are the best green beans I ever had, the hot and numbing fish is amazing, good portions and fast service
Been customers for years and usually order take out. We enjoy a variety of the entrees but have problems with what should be the easiest thing on the menu RICE! For our last couple orders the rice was either missing (and we paid extra for it) or was dry and stale! Please do better!
The food was great the service was great 10 out of 10 would recommend!
Food is absolutely delicious.
Service was great the food was horrible the rice was old and sticky, the broccoli and chicken was horrible, the General Tsos chicken was frozen and not cooked all the way
Good food, good service.
Love the food here. Everything we ordered was outstanding. I ve eaten at this restaurant for over 6 years and have never had a bad experience.
Tasty food in a lovely space. The service was very fast and attentive. There are many gluten free options(be sure to let your server know you want the GFO) All our food was delicious and the serving size was generous. It s pricier than your everyday take out, but this restaurant has wonderful quality. Can t wait to return to Peter Chang s!
The hot and numbing fish was delicious like always, and the cucumbers with garlic chili oil is always a great side. Parking: Its downtown Richmond, the parking is awful, not the fault of the restaurant.
My friend and I shared a much needed evening of dinner and girl talk. We were blessed to get a parking space right in front of the location. We were greeted and seated immediately. The waitress was attentive but gave us privacy. My friend had chicken and vegetables with fried rice. I had the lamb chops with fried rice. All the food was fresh and well seasoned. The tea was delicious and nice and hot. The portions were more than adequate and we each had take home bags. I highly recommend Peter Chang and will definately be going back soon.
So I want to start off saying that I frequent this establishment often. Ive enjoyed every meal Ive had here so far, that is, until today. My fried pork belly and sweet and sour chicken was top notch. But we ordered the three pepper beef and the dish came out extremely salty. Ive gotten this dish several times now and its been amazing every other time. We sent back the dish apologizing that it was very salty and it quickly came back remade. Now I work in a kitchen so I know a bunch of the tricks people do when things are sent back sometimes. It was very clear that my dish was not remade but rather rinsed off. It was then put back on the grill or in a wok with oil and reheated then sent out. True it was far less salty this time around, but all of the flavor of the food was now gone as well. I now had a pile of bland beef, naked onions and some spice from the peppers that were in there. Given that the food costs so much money to buy, I did expect to still have flavor on my food when it came back. I decided not to send it back the second time because I didnt feel like being a difficult customer any further. I am however very disappointed to get a flavorless, oily, bland plate in return because someone probably has an ego back in the kitchen and was angry that the customer apparently doesnt know what good flavor is. I can guarantee if he had bothered to take a bite he would have agreed with me.
Great service. The price was high
So this is the third time Ive come here and their bar is closed. They serve soda in cans. You must request a glass and ice. Not a great place to celebrate a Birthday, be warned! Big disappointment when your server cant even make a Cosmo, much less the manager!? I love their Hot and Numbing tofu skin noddles. Im going to celebrate somewhere else next year.
Service was slow but there werent many customers either. We were a bigger party, but our food was excellent and always is when we visit.
The food here is excellent and nowhere near your average Chinese cuisine. Its so great and unique. They use numbing peppercorns in some of their dishes and you can request them to be added to your dish. It will immediately and ultimately change your life. They are so unbelievably delicious. If you havent tried this hole in the wall, you need to immediately. The service was slow and we were there on a Saturday at lunchtime. There were one or two other tables being waited on and there were two servers and two other employees at the bar. We had a party of 7, but I feel we should have been attended to quicker or more often.
Amazing how terrible it was. I didn t know food could be this tasteless. The Basil eggplant had no discernible basil flavor dispute the visible (but tasteless) basil leaves in it. And with the construction next door parking was beyond bad. It s a chain anyway, go somewhere else local.
Fantastic
Attempting to eat the two dishes we just ordered and honestly cant even finish them. Ordered level 2 spice and both the beef dishes taste like nothing but oil and smell off. $50 down the drain, very disappointed. Refund would be appreciated.
No complaints. The place was a little bare but I really dont care about that. Its hard to find good asian food in richmond.
More intimate setting, lots of spice and a bright staff.
My wife and I go take out and to be honest we should have just left it there. Young lady told us food would be ready in like 15-20min. 7min later we had our food which seem strange even for a Chinese restaurant. Entree was dry and greasy. Fried rice was simply white rice with a few peas and a few bits of egg. Egg drop soup was was good. Order a side of of pork belly. Im not sure what they consider to be pork belly, but what we got was simply thick bacon fried in some batter. To me pork belly is thick chunks and deep fried to be crispy. Will try the short pump restaurant next time, but will not be returning to the broad street location again. Parking: Definitely need more parking
Authentic Chinese food.
Recently had dinner here! The dry fried eggplant dish ( I think they lightly coat it with rice flour) is Excellent, so is the broccoli one! The cold pickled vegetables is beyond amazing! The fried fish appetizer too! I think most locations have it!! These are my Favorite foods in this location and I Always recommend their Bubble Pancake!!
High chance the best Chinese food you ll ever have.
Early dinner while visiting our kid at VCU. Thai chili shredded pork is extremely spicy, but we were warned and went for it anyway. The servings were large and the service was excellent. Definitely going back.
I cant say enough about how awesome the food and service are at Peter Changs. Crispy pork belly is to die for!
Warning:There is no parking. I ordered hot tea but was given no spoon or sugar. I ordered veggie spring rolls to share, they were ridiculously small, and tasted like they were store bought frozen- as the veggies inside were flavorless mush. I ordered beef mei fun and received beef drunken noodles bathed in so much grease that it pooled at the bottom of the dish. The waiter couldnt bother to ask for drink refills, or if we were doing ok, but asked twice if we wanted a to-go box as it appeared he was trying to rush us out. There was noone waiting to be seated at 1pm on a rainy Saturday so Im unsure why he was so motivated to get rid of us instead of trying to upsell us on dessert like a good waiter would. I was there for approx 40 mins - most of the time spent waiting for terrible food. Only positives were the wonton soup, the large entree portion sizes, and the double cooked pork my husband ordered was good. Rating low for poor service and overhyped expensive inedible food.
Im gonna crave those wings on a regular basis.
One of the best Chinese food I have a had in a while. Got a catering from my work and the food was hot and delicious. Definitely recommend
Food was very good. Service was TERRIBLE. Danielle practically growled at every request and it was obvious she didn t want to be there. We were a party of 13, and we reserved the table for a special event 2 weeks in advance. Bill was over $500, all on one check, and would have been higher if cranky pants would have serviced the table appropriately. We had also brought a cake, she was INCREDULOUS that we wanted to eat it there! She brought it out in the box, dropped it on the table and walked away. No plates, silverware, or a knife. She then proceeded to be annoyed when we asked for those items. I could give more examples, but it is just best said she threw a blanket on a joyous occasion. I usually tip 30% for big parties done professionally, or even nicely. She got 15%, and if I didn t spend my college years waiting tables, I would have tipped 10%. Terrible.
The food and environment were pretty good, but the food was overpriced. I spent over $100 on food that was ok. Not taking away from the waiter that we had, he was very helpful
Incredible Szechuan Chinese restaurant. We have happened to go to 3 different ones and they are all fantastic. This one in Scotts Addition as well. The food was wonderfully prepared, and the flavors cannot be beat. This is a very different style of Chinese food then your average american #1 Chinese Takeout place you find everywhere, and that is a good thing.
Spicy but delicious Vegetarian options: The have vegetarian food Parking: In front of restaurant Kid-friendliness: Kids liked the food Wheelchair accessibility: Easy access use wheelchair
Compliments: the unique mule, bartender, cool pancake looking thing. Other than that, everything else was very disappointing. To be very clear, this is an American English Chinese restaurant. The oil they use is old, everything is greasy and salty, and breading seems to be on more than half their menu. If youre looking for Chinese take-out food with a cooler dine-in atmosphere, this is it. Their dim sum is mid and other main entrees are hit or miss. The orange entree picture attached was probably the worst one of them all. Its supposed to be chicken...but its just breading! Ha! I would come here for a drink again, but not for food. This review is a bit old (Nov 2022), so maybe its changed! I just remembered to write a review after explaining the lack of any good Chinese restaurants in Richmond to a friend of mine. Hope this helps someone rethink giving this place a visit. Also, parking was terrible! Parking: I parked in CVSs lot
I liked it a lot!
The food is always perfectly cooked and hot. The dumplings are to die for. Always amazing
Excellent food and service
They have no delivery staff. You must use a delivery service. The food is terrible; its extremely bland, flat, and flavourless.
Simply delicious
Overall good food, but I m not sure if the price points match with the portions and flavor of the dish. We liked our food and the service was great but 4 stars for good not great. It was definitely on the saltier side.
Mediocre. Know places for quarter of the cost with better taste.
I ordered takeout at 8pm. The young lady that took my order was very pleasant. After I placed my order, she told me my food would be right out! Im thinking wow thats really fast service. Got my order in less than 10 min, didnt think to check it, bcz this place came highly recommended! When I got home, everything I ordered was OLD and COLD. Not even warm! Even the spring rolls. I ordered General Tso chicken, fried rice and spring rolls. I could tell by just looking at it that the food had been sitting for quite some time. They didnt even have courtesy enough to warm it. NEVER AGAIN!!!!
Its good
I got a spicy braised fish dish so good! I dined in and asked for another bowl of rice and they provided it free of charge! I highly recommend Peter Chang s for one of the best restaurants for Chinese food in RVA!
Solid restaurant with decent food, staff was nice however, there was an issue with payment at the fault of the restaurant. Despite this the food was of good quality but nothing special.
Low key amazing. Really unassuming atmosphere for sone of the best quality food in town. Pork belly, Hunan chicken, duck in clay pot are stellar. Portions are large and good for sharing. Under rated in my opinion.
Maybe it was an off night, but the food was not as flavorful as it used to be. General Tsos tofu had 2 small pieces of broccoli and didnt taste like anything. Kung Pao tofu was slightly better but had no seasoning. Disappointing.
I wasnt aware habanero hot sauce was a staple in Chinese cooking... I asked for extra spicy, which it was. But it was obviously heated with some habanero hot sauce to get it there (Habaneros have a distinct taste). Pretty lazy way to make Chinese food spicy. Sadly the food consistency has gone downhill a lot lately.
Service was awful but was a whole lot better than the food. The only thing that was any good was the dry fried eggplant. The Peter Changs in Charlottesville is so incredibly good it is sad to see how awful it is at the Richmond location. We had 6 guests, all 6 have eaten the same dish they ordered here in Charlottesville and all 6 of us were sad that we wasted our time and money here. Parking: Good luck!
I had the shredded duck entree, which had decent flavor, but the meat wasnt shredded, it was strips of duck meat, which tasted fine, but why say its shredded when its not. Also, I had to pay extra for rice on the side for a $26 entree. Really?! Good service. Ill give them another try in the future and try a different dish.
Dietary restrictions: The vegetarian options dont cater to food allergies, so I was not able to order the spring rolls. Food
Excellent vegan options BUT you need to specifically order the item vegan or ask for no chicken broth powder when you order the vegetable options. Vegetarian options: Many options can be vegan or vegetarian friendly if ordered without the chicken broth powder. Ask your server to make the item vegan!
This was my first visit and I will be going back food was DELICIOUS!!! Customer Service was A1!!!
I should of known that when the person who worked there asked what did I order I should of known something was wrong. I ordered the chicken with pepper and garlic(spicy). The food was overly spicy and I could not eat the food. I will never return to this restaurant.
Amazing value and portions for delivery. I sometimes get two lunch specials and it ll last me like four days. The main menu stuff is pretty okay and is pricier. I don t recommend going in to eat though, it s cramped and hard to have a conversation with how close you are to foot traffic. The servers are not the friendliest but I don t expect much. You gotta call out to them if you need anything.
Great restaurant, great service, great location. The food is awesome if you like spicy Sichuan. They also have a branch in short pump, where the env. is more spacious.
Absolutely wonderful Chinese food.
Not bad, but for 18 dollars for Orange chicken and white rice, it should come with more. I think it taste fine, because I dont like my chicken drowning in sauce, but there is barely any so thats something to consider. I was told by others the reason its bland is, because its more authentic chinese food vs other restaurants, but Ill definitely stick to Peking or p.f. changs as they taste a lot better. On the bright side it does taste better than cheap chinese food, but it still doesnt hold a candle to my favorite two Chinese restaurants mentioned previously.
Peter Chang is a well known and popular restaurant In Richmond My friend and I ordered based on the employees recommendations: - Golden Mountain Chicken - Duck Overall, we very much enjoyed our food and our experience so I would recommend trying Peter Chang at least once. However, I do not know if I would return personally for a second visit.
I used to love this place. My husband and I have ordered from this location multiple times per week. However, I have noticed a decline in the quality of the food. We ordered from here last night. I got the kung pao chicken and had to work really hard to find the chicken. My plate was filled with onions, peppers and asparagus. My husband had the same experience. Sadly, we re not sure if we ll be ordering again.
Love this place, Chang is a God of Chinese cuisine. I love the hot numbing chili pots and the dim sum offerings. The seasonal offerings are always nice and the staff is friendly and knowledgeable
This was the most overpriced chinese food I have ever had. The presentation was great but thats all you get from this restaurant. You are better off getting chinese food from the hood spot.
Great Chinese and a great take out option. Dried fried eggplant is a must.
Good
Fabulous dim sum and szechuan dishes. Great soup dumplings (or called here soup buns) and their cucumber salad also fabulous. Enjoyed their pear sour expertly crafted.
I love the lo mein here! Service is always fast and professional.
Big fan of Peter Changs other restaurants in Charlottesville and Northern Virginia and this one is equally as good. Delicious Sichuan dishes that bring the heat! If you dont like spicy food or think all Chinese food should be cheap then this is not the place for you. You 100% get what you pay for here and most dishes are authentically hot. Has become my go to for Chinese carry out in RVA.
Great food! You gotta be ok with spice tho Must try crispy pork belly!!
They ve got traditional Chinese recipes and Americanized recipes and I ve got to say, they hit the spot on both. I m always in the mood for their lo mein and bang bang shrimps.
This place has so flavorful food. All the dishes we tried were so good. Spicy as well but good level of spicy. Make sure to reserve a table if it s after 6PM.
I love this restaurant. I always get the three pepper steak with crunchy noddles. So delicious and just the right spices. Sooooo delicious I in love with this Chinese restaurant best Chinese food ever.
Pretty extensive menu...three of us all loved our meals. Real Szechuan flavor. Good service too. Kind of a bare bones type of place...bare concrete floors. But I will definitely go back.
Service was excellent. Food...meh.
I got delivery the other day and gotta say, I was very disappointed. I dont know if I got them on a bad day or just ordered the wrong dish. I got one of the lunch specials delivered to my house. Everything was way cold at arrival. The soup was overly salted and the fried rice didnt even taste cooked, it was like someone just put a dash of soy sauce on steamed white rice with a few frozen peas and put that in my to go box. Gotta say it was a bust for me. Maybe Ill try it again one day in the restaurant, but this, literally, left a bad taste in my mouth.
Service was excellent and food was prepared quickly and was delicious. Leftovers were just as good as the firsy time
Under cooked rice over price, hot and Sour soup sucked
I enjoyed eating here. The food was tasty, though very spicy - we love spice, but they dont hold back so beware! Presentation of plates, especially the fried pork belly, was pretty and unique. Everything was definately tasty, but I wouldnt say it exceeded my expectations. Perhaps part of this is the prices, which exceed that of your average reasonable to slightly high prices. Service was great and the servers were always cleaning. I probably wont return, but I may try their other location.
What great Asian food. We had a huge selection and everything was yummy and fresh. Well that is everything thing but the lettuce wrap so pass on that. Definitely worth dealing with the construction around there.
Great place. The bartender Brian was awesome. My only regret was not being able to order everything on the menu.
Great sumptuous food and easy to order menu. Better than most. Super courteous and fast servers and service. Eat in or carry out, we will make it a regular stop each time we drive through Richmond. Great value and quality. Family atmosphere is jovial and fun for all. Owners are onsite and take care of their customers, big or small.
Good but it was really spicy last time we went. Like running for the milk spicy!
We went on a whim. We enjoyed the food it was fast and tasty. Our waitress was amazing. It was odd such a nice restaurant had can sodas but it made for an interesting experience. Loved the bamboo fish appetizer. Cant wait to try it again!
I mean its fine. Theyre slightly authentic, but dont go all the way and charge a premium for the Peter Chang name. Its just pretty mid overall.
Wonderful!! Saturday night munch of shrimp fried rice, veggie egg rolls, wonton soup and Thai pork. The wonton soup was an experience! Light, flavorful filling with the most delicate wonton wrapper - ahhhh! The shrimp fried rice was fragrant and shrimp laden! Now I like it spicy but the thai pork, reduced from 5 to 2 in the heat department, was still TOO HOT! Eye burning, sneezing hot! But once the seeded peppers were removed, it was more manageable. Still delicious and worth every tear !
Parking: Doesnt have a parking lot so you have to find parking on the street.
I just had a not very pleasant experience here. I used to love this place and still love the Short Pump location. I have many dietary issues and every restaurant is always willing to accommodate even if it is steamed vegetables. They would not even do that for me. As soon as I made mention of my dietary issues she acted annoyed. I then began to share with her and explained what the other location did. She went back to the kitchen and said they could not do that. I asked if they had any suggestions of something they could do and she said there was nothing. I am extremely disappointed and will not back to this location. I always write good reviews of amazing and accommodating places and felt I needed to share the opposite.
We went there for lunch on Monday 6/20 for lunch . We want to order from the lunch special menu but the waiter said to day it is holiday JUNETEENTH - they don t do the special lunch . So we ordered on the regular menu . We had Chicken mango & Huna fish , food is fine . Could I ask the owner what the reason for no lunch special menus?
We ordered the spicy chicken and dumplings. I loved both! I dont like a ton of spicy things, but I do like some mildly spicy foods. The chicken was borderline spicy, and I loved it! The dumplings were really good as well. I wouldnt call the restaurant clean or dirty. The staff was really nice! It was not busy at 6pm. I would definitely come back here for more delicious food and a lovely evening.
Good food
Love this for Chinese food in the city! Expensive but delicious! Dietary restrictions: Lots of gluten-free options.
Parking: Terrible. Street parking. Hardly any open spaces. Lots of construction going on.
Great food
Widest waiter I have ever had kicked us out because we wanted drinks we wait at the bar for 20 mins for the bar tender to throw a fit she couldn t get to us so she kicked us out. 0/ 10 would .. no wish I never went here
My first time experience was awesome. Loved the tofu, soup, chicken noodles, lomein.. quantity is little less i feel.. apart from that service is good.. good place to go with kids and friends..
I loved the Fried Rice. So good and the portion was more than I thought. The others in the group had great meals as well. Lo mein was great and the Sesame chicken was the best Sesame chicken I have ever eaten. Had the appetizer, fish in a bamboo basket, most excellent. I cant wait to go back again. Good prices and fabulous service. We were able to park along the street.
Horrible uncomfortable experience. I walked in at 830. The guy upfront completely ignored me then when the server finally came to seat me he was saying were about to close which was confusing bc it was 842pm and I was just one person. Even when he came to my table u tried to break the ice and say I waited over 10 mins at door he just walked away
I have found a Chinese restaurant that I feel good about. Its been a long time coming!
Terrible customer service. Never got the food due to mistake. Never refunded our money. Owner was nasty and very rude. Never recommend this place due to customer experience.
First time at Peter Changs. Loved my combo fried rice, but didnt care too much for their spring rolls (egg rolls not a menu option). The hostess was friendly. I would go back for the rice, if in the area again. Parking: Its in the city of course, so be prepared to search for street parking.
As Americanized Sichuan cuisine, it is alright. Food is not greasy, which is good, but not authentic.
Just go. You wont be disappointed!
Nice location, good food
I really wanted to love this place. Presentation was good. However, food lacked flavor especially the fried rice and pork belly. Everything I ordered tasted as if it were missing something. Something I ate, also had my stomache hurting for the rest of the day too.
I had a really good dining experience here! I came with a group of 5 on a Saturday night and there was no wait (which seems like we got lucky). We were greeted quickly with water and our server was really nice. I ordered the bamboo fish as an appetizer and the Szechuan Double cooked chicken. The fish was fried to perfection and simply tasted amazing along with the greens they were served with. The chicken dish was the perfect level of spices mixed with chili oil and that lovely Szechuan flavor/kick. I got the chance to try my friends fried eggplant which was also so freaking good. Our server did have one small issue with the checks toward the end but he fixed it with no big hassle and we really appreciated that. I would mention him by name but, I dont think we ever got it but regardless he did a good job! I would love to come back! Very authentic Chinese food :)
Excellent restaurant. The food is top of the line...Delicious. The staff are very polite and professional.
Sorry to say but the was not good. Way to salty. It was almost uneatable. Maybe is was just a bad night. The place had a good crowd. Service was great (Candace). They gave a discount because we did not eat the full meal. I think this is good place just had a off night. I will try it again in a few weeks.
We went for lunch on a cool fall afternoon and it hit the spot. Not fussy, but fresh. Attentive service
I have heard many great things about this spot. Sadly, if the food I recieved is any indication, they are exaggerations. Seasoning game is on point, have to give them that. I enjoy Szechuan food in particular and the flavor profiles were right. The food was also cooked evenly and thoroughly. Sadly the quality of the meat was very sub-standard. Chunky, stringy chicken and tasteless, greasy pork. Supply lines are insane right now, there is no doubt, but much better quality than this is available. Given the price point, the food was not worth it.
Very good food. Service great and fast. Pricey but worth it for most part. Dandan noodle were a little too salty but still good. Bang bang shrimp was tasty. Lamb chops good. We will be back. Dietary restrictions: Onions...they took it seriously.
No to be confused with PF Chang!!!! This is a whole nother level. You will be blown away!! Bubble pancake for starter was a novelty for me but I doubled that order once tasted. The spice levels are for real so be warned. With that being said there is a lot of flavour besides!
Excellent food! Parking: Parking is hard to find for this out-of-towner, but maybe not for locals. Food : 5/5 |
I like the fact that you can get your food as spicy as you want...the spicy beef was good - so was the pork belly! I think it wouldve been a better experience if wed dined in...
The food is very good but it is also very expensive. The worst part is there is no where to park.
Food is great
This was a horrible experience to say the least. I ordered chicken and vegetable lo mein. It tasted like Ramen noodles boiled in dishwater. I asked for soy sauce and duck sauce, the waitress brought me soy and sweet n sour sauce. The hot tea, well lets just say it did not taste like tea. More like hot city water. We will NEVER go back there.
Dry flavorless fried rice, bad general tsos chicken, only thing that was edible was the chicken lo mein. Will not be trying again.
Dietary restrictions: Had several gluten-free options
Went for my moms birthday and it was great! I have always gotten takeout but the food was better in the restaurant (although takeout is great too). Family style gave everyone several options. One of my favorite Chinese places in Richmond!
Used to come here all the time. The Kung pao chicken was mostly onions. Be warned entrees don t come with rice, you have to add that as a side.
