Came here with a large group (15 ppl) a few months ago. The staff worked so hard to make sure we had a great experience. I ordered a combo dish with different meats and veggie stews included and all of it was really delicious. Definitely looking forward to my next visit here!

Took a day trip to Richmond to meet a friend for lunch, and was looking a great Ethiopian spot and this place did not disappoint! The food here is absolutely amazing! By far my favorite Ethiopian restaurant in Richmond. The food is well seasoned and portion size is just right!

I adore Ethiopian cuisine but Addis is more than just tasty food. This place has a lotta soul and funk. They have a lounge bar, small art gallery featuring local artists, an outdoor patio and an open mike night on Tuesdays when I happened to be in town late for dinner and ordered the 6 veggie combo which comes with unlimited Injera (sourdough pancake). Rachel my waitress was super gracious and attentive. I stayed on for Tuesday Verses which was so fun watching local talents rapping, singing, dancing to a rocking house band on stage. The $12 cover charge was well worth it ‘cos Richmond Got Talent—WORD!

This was my first Ethiopian food experience and even considering I have nothing to compare it to, the food was phenomenal. Nothing to say but go try it for yourself! Tried the beef, lamb, and chicken tibs and also the vegetarian platter. All equally unique in flavor and delicious Like others have mentioned, the bathrooms could use some remodeling and perhaps the rest of the restaurant as well

Oh how delighted we are to have found this delightful place. You must start your meal out with a Sambussas. We ordered one for the table to split and not a drop left. We ordered a vegetarian plate to gets lots of veggies and a assorted meat plate to include Lamb Chicken and Stew! We will be Back!!!

I have eaten Ethiopian food around the world including in Ethiopia. The food really stood up and was very very tasty. If this is your first time getting Ethiopian I highly recommend getting the vegetarian sampler because vegetables are when the things they do the best in Ethiopia. The one young lady who was doing all the serving was really hustling and I don’t know how she did all she did. They have a nice outside area if it’s a nice day. The interior was very very fresh. And we really enjoyed our experience!

Fantastic, flavorful food. Thank you! Owner served us. They had 100% teff injera for gluten free folks! Wonderful experience. Addis is our favorite vegetarian, plant based food restaurant. Vegetarian options: Many food entrees are vegan or 100% plant based. Dietary restrictions: Gluten free injera can be requested.

Every time we order takeout you leave items out of what is delivered but still charge us for it. When we call to try to make it right we get the run around but never a refund for the missing items.

My family drove all the way from Waynesboro for Addis Ethiopian food, and it did not disappoint. If you like the robust flavors of Indian food, you will appreciate Ethiopian food too. We took several family members who had never eaten Ethiopian food before, and they were all pleasantly surprised. Lunch at Addis will be a top place to get a meal the next time we visit Richmond.

Sat for nearly 30 minutes without being served. No one approached us to tell us there was any issue, had to get our own menus from the bar. It appeared they were understaffed but a table of 15 was set after us before we had even been welcomed. Got up and left and no one attempted to stop us and correct the issue. Previous times there did not have any issues and food was fantastic

This is a great Ethiopian restaurant! We really enjoyed all the food. My friend is gluten intolerant and they actually have gluten free injera! The taste is quite accurate, but they are a bit crumbly due to the lack of gluten. If you are looking for an Ethiopian restaurant in the RVA this is a must try! Dietary restrictions: They have gluten free injera! The taste is quite accurate, but they are a bit crumbly due to the lack of gluten.

Third time having Ethiopian food. I found this place before I flew into Richmond and having only had the cuisine a few times before I didn t want to miss the opportunity. The food was absolutely delicious. We othered the sambussa, kentanya?, lamb, Addis special chicken and the vegetables. Nothing was disappointing. The staff were friendly and although few they made sure you were taken care of. I wouldn t hesitate to come back and they ve set a new bar for Ethiopian cuisine for me.

This was the first place I have had Ethiopian cuisine so I have no comparisons/expectations to note. It took a couple minutes to get greeted while only 2 other tables were occupied in the whole place. I was sat in the outdoor area (my choice). At first glance on the menu there were many vegetarian options available to order! I personally am not vegetarian but do have friends with that dietary restriction. I ordered the sambussas as an appetizer and was blown away with how fantastic they were. Never thought of enjoying lentils with a a crispy dough exterior! I had the chicken tibs for my entree with their in house beer special. It was a good pairing, the entree had a nice flavor though I preferred a bit more spice. You get a big portion of injera with your entree as well. Will definitely try again in the future.

My favorite restaurant in all of Richmond, I love eating here whenever Im in town. Although I am not a fan of injera (its a personal/texture thing, so I just use a fork), the food is always delicious, with excellent vegetarian options, and the staff is always welcoming and friendly. The Ethiopian honey wine is a particularly decadent treat.

Arrived and ordered, ready to experience our first Ethiopian fare. Ordered and received drinks. 45 minutes later, while patrons who came in after us had been served already, we had neither been served nor spoken with. When I happened to ask, they actually had the gall to say that our food takes longer to make. The nail in the coffin was when they offered to immediately give us our food as we stood to leave. I would absolutely not eat here again. lol I guesss I never ate here the first time.

Our memories of Addis from years ago were better left alone. Our recent visit was a disappointment At 6pm with many tables empty, the service was slow, they were out of glasses and used plastic cups, 2 of the 4 dishes were dirty with food remnants. The spiciest food was not spicy. And most frightening, there was a 4 inch hair in our meal! The atmosphere left a lot for improvement too. The bathroom was clean-ish but needs some paint and updating. Walls and doors were very dirty and scuffed. Outlet covers were hanging off. A piece of a plunger was laying on the ground. Sadly, Addis seems to have gone downhill and we do not plan to return.

Heads-up to anyone lactose intolerant: most of the menu contains clarified seasoned butter. Its a meal well worth the lactaid though; i come here whenever Im in town and always leave stuffed / with leftovers for lunch the next day. Charged over charged and illegally charged improper taxes and fees- for a meal I didn t get but boxed cold- $70 to wait for cold food flat soda and lack of care, customer service. It was a special dinner for my partner and myself and you ruined it. I hope anyone who thinks this is unique it s not. They are beyond past the point of no return. My two servers I thought were busy and I was patient being and servicing in restaurants for years. This is a horrible experience. The staff should be gone ASAP. The word is spread already.

December 22, 2023

Awful! Made a reservation for my girlfriend and I and went down all excited but the experience was inexcusably bad. Waited ten minutes for a server, didnt get our appetizer, got served flat soda, and spent thirty minutes watching other tables getting treated better than us. The tables around us were dirty and the staff didnt seem interested in cleaning them. When I went to the mens room, the light fixture was hanging from the ceiling by the wires. We paid $70 for all this. Go anywhere else!

My husband went to pick up my order and was charged $68 for a meal that was supposed to be $31. He went back in to have this corrected and while inside realized that they didn t put the side of lentils in the bag. After getting home we open the food and there is some kind of bug in the side of lentils that that the woman at the counter handed us we have had issues with this restaurant before with them not putting the side items in the bag (starting to think it s done on purpose) but wanted to give them another try but NEVER AGAIN!!!

Average Ethiopian restaurant in a fun part of town. The vegetarian platter was enough for two people, but the food itself was ordinary and not particularly flavorful. The wine list is OK but dont write home about it; the beer list, in a city known for its breweries, was completely pedestrian. I ended up not wanting to drink anything at all. The server was very friendly and tried to do a good job, but was not up to the task and seemed overwhelmed trying to cope with the few diners who came in that evening. The outdoor patio is great, with effective heaters and a canopy. The street is closed to cars, so people-watching is a pleasant diversion. Parking can be a challenge, particularly during busy weekends.

Being Habeshan (of the Ethiopian/Eritrean culture), I was very disappointed with the services I received. I went there for mothers day with family---they did not cater to our needs at all, they did not give us what we craved and ordered. We drove an hour away for such an experience. Instead, we ended up with left over food...fatty meats and microwaved injera (seriously!)---my children were very upset with how unfair we were treated and still ended up paying for such a poor and miserable service. The food is not quality nor healthy at all, do your research folks! Start with the Injera...!

My review has nothing to do with the food (which was just OK, IMO) but the horrible service we experienced today. The table we were seated at broke a leg and fell on the right side onto my kids toe and my MILs hand. Luckily my husband and I held it up so we could get them out. They were hurt and we were shook up but we let it go coz these things happen sometimes. But after this, we got our food but had to ask for everything from water, to cutlery to napkins and were treated as if we were the ones who broke the table on purpose. There was ONE waiter on staff and NO manager in sight who would apologize to us (which would be a bare courtesy considering what could have happened with the table being so heavy). The restaurant was NOT crowded though so we didnt appreciate the lack of courtesy , let alone and apology. LUCKILY, My 8 yr old daughter had MOVED to another table a MINUTE before the table fell else she would have had been seriously injured by the table and glass from the water glasses and plates that broken on impact. The more I think about it, the more I feel badly thinking of what could have happened today. It was just horrible. They need to have better checks in place and need to take better care of their customers.

Excellent restaurant right in the middle of downtown Richmond. The service provided by the waitress was friendly and the food was tasty, although a bit on the bland side. Some of the better injera I have had. I do wish the food was served warm instead of room temp (I got veg entree), and the wait time was long for the food to arrive. Otherwise very good.

Went tonight and was terribly disappointed. I m only glad this wasn t my first Ethiopian restaurant. We ordered immediately and it was an hour to get our entree and they all arrived room temp (chicken tibs and 3 vegetarian.) None of the 3 wait staff seemed to be doing a consistent job changing from bar to hostess to waitress constantly. The person who was the bartender the most kept dropping cups or plates and making super loud crashing sounds that were very unpleasant and we were sitting on the opposite wall. The waitress and bartender were also fighting about some unknown thing which I don t believe should be happening in the front with customers. Waited quite a while to get drinks refilled which imo most restaurants never let your cup get all the way empty. And when we did get a refill they gave us water and didn t ask what we were drinking. The bench I was sitting on kept moving from the person on the other side moving. And the icing on the cake was the table next to us found metal in their meat and nothing close to an apology was made.

tl;dr: Addis has *really* gone downhill in the past 3 years. Sadly, their food is pretty terrible now. This, combined with the slow service and the lack of cleanliness make what was once one of the best restaurants in the area now a very hard pass. The long version: I ate here about 30 times between 2014 - 2020 and it was amazing every time -- my favorite restaurant in the region. I just went back for the first time in over two and a half years, and it has *really* gone downhill since then. My first time back after so long, I ordered a bunch of my old favorites. I was sorely disappointed by almost all of them: (1) The bozena shiro (chickpea stew with beef). The shiro they served was definitely *not* shiro. They used to serve the most velvety, nutty, chickpea stew. I dont know what theyre serving now. It tastes like canned gravy maybe? I suspect it no longer even has chickpeas in it. It was absolutely disgusting. (2) The misir wot (spicy red lentils). Theyve *severely* toned down the spices in this dish. It used to taste of delicious, aromatic berbere. I could not detect the berbere in it any longer. It is super bland now. (3) Gomen (collards). Theyve removed all the spices from this dish too. The collards used to be so flavorful and delicious. Now, theyre just serving them bland, American style. Maybe a little salt added, but I couldnt detect anything else. Boring. (4) Ayb (cheese). The cheese was so bone dry it was almost like sand. It used to be much creamier and delicious. This cheese tasted like it had been sitting out, unsealed for days. Inedible. (5) Kitfo (raw, minced beef). The kitfo was the only dish that was actually still very good. I do think theyve cut back on the mitmita (chili powder), and the quality of the meat might be just a little lower, but it was still delicious, brimming with the smell and flavor of korerima (Ethiopian black cardamom), and seemed to still have a decent amount of kibe (spiced clarified butter) in it. (6) Tej (honey wine). They serve a different brand of tej than they used to. (Its now from Negus Brewing out of Virginia.) It was delicious, even if overpriced. And kind of cool to support a local tej-maker. (The old brand they served was Enat Tej out of California, which I think has gone out of business.) (7) The injera (sourdough crepe bread). I should also mention that the injera was still pretty good. It seemed less sour than in the past, and definitely much thicker, but still good. Its likely cut with lots of all purpose flour or barley flour, with not much teff, but theyve always done this at Addis if I recall correctly, and its fairly standard for restaurants in the U.S. Also: Yes, the service is slow, and its not super clean inside. But those two things have always been true, and I never minded them. To me, those sorts of things are forgivable if the food is outstanding. Sadly, the food is now mostly pretty bad. So... What happened??? I dont know, maybe theyve made their food increasingly inauthentic to cater to the taste of the locals as this area becomes increasingly gentrified? Or, theyve had issues getting authentic ingredients due to pandemic-related supply issues? Maybe the gentrification caused a steep rent hike -- and this paired with inflation forced some severe corner-cutting? Whatever the case, I am SO sad to see this place serving food that is so vastly inferior and less authentic than what I know they are capable of. I am so, so sad to come to terms with the realization that I will never be coming back. (But hey, it frees me up to visit other delicious places whenever I am in Richmond, like Perlys! Previously, I refused to eat anywhere else in town except Addis.)

If I could give this place -5 stars I would. This place never answers their phone for takeout orders. Have to drive up here to place an order and they take on average 45 minutes to make your food. Often times I come up here and they close early ? As in 8:30 when their website and google says 10:00 pm. I am vegan so my places to eat at limited but I will no longer support this establishment.

If I could give yall 6 stars, I would. Addis is outstanding! Everything is skillfully prepared and packed with flavor. Some of our favorite protein dishes include Bozena Shiro (a thick gravy-like savory beef stew), Chicken Tibs (sauteed chicken with spices and jalapeno), and Doro Wot (stewed onions with aromatic spices, chicken, and hard boiled egg). For vegetable dishes we usually order the platter of 6 because its impossible to choose and they all add such wonderful contrast to any entree. For two people, its just enough to order one appetizer, one main entree and a side because it comes with injera which is filling...But we always go way overboard. Plus we want extra for leftovers. Dine in or take out, its the best. Theres nothing like the satisfaction of a meal from Addis! Vegetarian options: Lots of vegetarian appetizers and side dishes including lentils, potatoes, greens, and more. Well spiced and often cooked in clarified butter, deeply satisfying as mains! Dietary restrictions: I believe that much of what their chefs prepare, including the injera which is served with every meal, is naturally gluten free. Teff flour and chickpea flour are non glutenous and quite common in many of these dishes.

December 22, 2022

Truly awful experience. My table waited nearly an hour to have our order taken. We arrived when the restaurant was quite empty but our requests for service were ignored. After much waiting, we noticed the waitress going out of her way to serve caucasian customers, providing them an exceptional experience from the moment they walked in. They enjoyed glasses of wine and even received appetizers while we couldnt get her to even offer us water. After rising to ask for service several times, our drink orders were taken and we were brought PLASTIC CUPS of wine. Of course, the other guests ordered additional wine and received it in glasses. When I went to tell the manager of our treatment, he yelled and told me to get back in my seat. I am a 45 year old woman and he loudly, repeatedly told me to go and be seated. It was shocking to be demeaned and disriminated against in an ethnic restaurant. Because we came for the spoken word event on my friends birthday, I didnt walk out. I stayed for my friend and even ordered the poorly prepared dishes this restaurant passes off as authentic Ethiopian food. It was bland and disappointing though not as terrible as the service. I wouldnt return to or recommend this establishment for anything in the world. I hope the spoken word event finds a new home soon.

I attend an open mic at this restaurant occasionally. Tonight I chose to come out because I had not been out in a while and I really wanted to get out of the house. After being seated and sitting for about 20 minutes, I was finally approached by a server who provided me water and told me that she would be back to check on me. I stepped away from my table to sign up for the open mic and when I returned I was approached by the bartender who was very rude in asking me if I was purchasing anything. I informed her I would be, to which she replied ok cool followed by the rules of the open mic. I explained that I also paid to get in the open mic and had intentions on purchasing so I didn t understand how it applied to me.. she rolled her eyes and walked away.. she was not my server and my server never returned to my table.. outside of the amazing open mic that is put on here, I will not be patronizing this restaurant.

I went here on a weeknight. The inside is very air conditioned but it was pleasant to eat outside. The staff was friendly and accommodating to my additional requests for a spoon and to-go containers. I ordered the Addis speciality 3 meat plate. The restaurant was out of Alicia sega wot. The portions were very generous and enough for at least 3 meals. I appreciated the variety but found many pieces of the beef to be very tough so I did not want to eat it all. I liked that the meat plate came with a vegetable. The actual price of the specialty meat plate was 10 percent higher than what was listed on the menu. The was human hair baked into my injera that discouraged me from finishing the injera. See my photo. A friend had recommended it as a favorite so maybe I went on an off night.

First time trying Ethiopian food and its pretty good! You would wrap the injera - sour fermented flatbread, kinda like a thick sour crepe - around the meat and vegetable and enjoy it. Meat is well-seasoned,and the sourness from the bread adds more taste to the food. Everything is put on the injera on a big plate for everyone to share together.
