About

Can Can is a French brasserie and bakery constructed to look and feel as if it has been lifted from the Left Bank of Paris and dropped into the heart of Carytown’s retail shopping district. With dedicated bakery and pastry kitchens, the restaurant presents an extraordinary selection of house made breads and desserts. Our coffee, beer, wine, spirits, and cocktail programs feature hand-crafted products best enjoyed at a standing room only spot at our custom made zinc bar, imported from France. The availability of French luxuries in a brasserie setting offers guests the opportunity to celebrate with friends and family every day, whether for a group happy hour or more formal dinner.

First time experiencing your establishment. The food was fantastic but the service even better! Kayley C. was outstanding! She was attentive and had the most exquisite recommendations. We had a lovely date night!

Visited Can Can yesterday evening to celebrate a birthday, and our experience was fantastic! The space itself is beautiful and intimately lit, and smells delicious as soon as you walk in. We had a reservation, but ended up being sat a couple minutes late (no big deal at all, it was less than 5 minutes) and the hostess comped our first round of drinks, which was not necessary but so kind. Our server Macy was awesome, very friendly and attentive, and her timing was perfect! She was knowledgeable about the menu and helped us grab some pastries to take home. The food is delicious as well, our entire meal was amazing. Their house made bread basket was huge, with a variety of breads ranging from savory to herbal to sweet. I had oysters on the half shell and Salmon au poivre (the wild mushroom risotto that accompanied it was perfect), and my partner had crispy oysters and Coq au vin. Everything was *chefs kiss* I would definitely dine here again.

Glad I came back to this place. The atmosphere is stellar, and our waitress was delightful and attentive. Lunch is affordable . My steak sandwich was out of this world. My only disappointment , is they don't have real fresh brewed sweet tea. If you ask for a sweet tea, they bring you unsweetened tea with a sweetener jar. Other than that, it was perfect in every possible way!

Get the Quiche Lorraine ($15)! They don’t have it all the time, but nearly every Sunday. The Eggs in Purgatory ($15) was great. The oysters ($28 for 12) were also good: the ones from Maryland were understandably larger than those from Virginia - lesson learned. Our server, Jaime, was GREAT! The young, slender white server who refilled our waters and the slightly taller black gentleman who topped off my wife’s coffee were both super attentive. My only complaint was the frites/fries were too salty. Please use less salt; those who want them saltier can add it at the table. We’re both coming back for the Quiche Lorraine!

Step back in time in this ornate restaurant. The atmosphere is bright and colorful, and the menu is even better. The food is fresh and full of flavor. Our party of 4 ordered the Provencale, the steak sandwich (both with fries,) crab quiche, French onion soup, and butternut squash soup. The bread is freshly baked sourdough. They have a magnificent bar and a nice wine selection. We absolutely would go back the next time we are in town.

The atmosphere and aesthetics of this restaurant was spot on. It’s definitely more of a busy and bustling environment so not very romantic atmosphere. It’s still good for a date too. The food, i would definitely recommend the moules frites. These were great. The beef bourguignon was pretty good but not impressive good. We also ordered another dish, not sure what it was called but it was just simple beef patty and friend which was not very good. It was a very basic tasting and basic dish. The service was okay, it was busy so the server only came to drop off food and give a check. Overall it was a good experience.

Very pretty atmosphere--inside and outside I'll request a window table in the front next visit. The seafood towers are a steal. Lobster, clams, oysters, mussels, and shrimp...marvelous. Great vibe, very busy, fresh cut flowers for sale outside...wish they had a duck mousse pate available, but our service was stellar.

Always love Can-Can authentic French bistro food. The food is always excellent I had a cocktail, husband a beer, we both had onion soup, I had beet salad and my husband had hanger steak and my husband had a Baileys. our server Sammi Davis was wonderful. it is on the more expensive side especially when you factor in drinks, which is not unusual.

Caleb was without a doubt the best bartender I have ever had! He was so attentive and personable. He is obviously very experienced. We ordered drinks and he made recommendations that were so on point and exactly what we wanted! He knew better cocktails than what we ordered and how their original recipes were and why. This is a man that knows his craft and is extremely talented. If you re ever here ASK FOR CALEB!

Went for brunch and was disappointed. Food was fine, but not great. Our server was friendly, but the biggest issue was with the timing of everything. We ordered drinks, oysters and beignets, then a few minutes later our server came back to take the main course orders. Entrees arrived (no sign of our appetizers). Halfway through our entrees another server finally arrived with our oysters, but at this point there was no room on the table for them, so we wistfully watched them walk away. Beignets never arrived. Of the food we did receive, the quiche was good, as was the croque madam. The onion soup was disappointing--again, a timing issue. It had clearly been sitting too long before being sent out. What was left of the crouton was a soggy gloop covered in a grease slick. The cheese had been melted and then congealed. The fries that came with the croque madam were well-seasoned, but not crisp. Just underwhelming all around. I may come back, but definitely not on a weekend, and wont order entrees until after the apps are served.

First time back in well over 10 years. Had a holiday luncheon gathering of HS friends. The food was great, wine and drinks as well. This is such a beautiful restaurant and perfect for celebrations and festive occasions. I am looking forward to returning soon. Everything was great, though service spotty. Hopefully that was due to the busy holiday season. Looking forward to my next visit.

For our recent date night, my husband and I chose Can Can Brasserie. From the moment we walked in, the restaurant s charming Parisian vibe set the tone for a memorable evening. We started with the escargots as an appetizer, which were perfectly prepared. For our entrées, I opted for the beef bourguignon a rich, hearty dish that truly delivered on comfort and taste. My husband went for the burger, which was cooked to perfection. The portions were generous, the prices reasonable, and the service was impressively efficient. Our food arrived quickly, but we never felt rushed. The wine selection was another highlight, offering a well-rounded list that complemented the menu nicely. A small note of caution: many sections of the dining area have closely spaced tables, so be ready for a bustling, energetic atmosphere. However, that just added to the authentic brasserie experience for us. One bonus was the convenient parking lot right next door a rare find in Carytown, especially for those of us who aren t fans of parallel parking. Overall, Can Can Brasserie is a gem, combining excellent food, great service, and a lively ambiance. We can t wait to return for another date night or any occasion, really. Highly recommended!

What was once one of our favorite RVA restaurants has taken a sudden downturn and will now be a place we avoid. Exceedingly slow service, subpar food, complete disregard by management - not one redeeming quality. When drinks take 30+ minutes to be served (arriving after food,) and food arrives cold, gets sent back only to reappear slightly warmer, there s an issue. Management tolerates poor service and poor BOH performance - until THAT changes, nothing else matters. RIP Can Can - you will be missed.

On a spur-of-the-moment whim, my wife and I decided to have brunch at Can Can. We were able to get a table by the window (nice view of Carytown). We both decided on the eggs Benedict, which were perfect. We also had cappuccino with the meal which we enjoyed very much. Then, in a moment of weakness, we ordered dessert. My wife had two Madelines, which she praised highly. I tried the French Apple Cake, which was BEYOND delicious! OOH LA LA! Finally, our server, Mademoiselle Audrey, was super helpful and very proactive with the kitchen staff. to get our orders out. I cannot praise her highly enough. We have always enjoyed Can Can one of Richmond s great restaurants we ll be back again.

Most of the food is quite good, and the service has always been excellent. However, the place can get extremely noisy, especially if the front windows havent been opened to help channel the din into the street. Ive been hit or miss on the covktail menu as well.

I went with a friend and we started off at the bar until our table was ready. The drinks are ridiculous priced (some $18!). We had one round and then were moved to our table where we had an appetizer and another round of drinks. When we were ready for the bill our server instructed us that we had to go back to the bar to request our bar tab (because I suppose our server couldn t get it?). When we went to the bar even the bartender seemed thrown off by our servers instructions. This place has clearly turned into a cash grab and forgotten what good service means along the way.

Visited for brunch and enjoyed the food and atmosphere, but the service was unfortunately lacking. Its been a long time since Ive experienced service this poor. We had to repeatedly remind the server about items that were forgotten, and our water glasses remained empty throughout the meal. The server only appeared to take our order, deliver the food, and then to collect the check. It really detracted from an otherwise pleasant experience.

November 22, 2024

Absolutely and sadly the last time i will visit Can Can! The food has gone down hill fast- We waited over 1.5 hours for a salad with a few pieces of romaine on it, a cold onion soup (wong size) and a cold steak sandwich. Horrible service, not worth the vibe anymore. Get a new manager or a new owner before Carytown loses a great place. Wish We could rate a (-) negative star. we asked food refs from the people dining next to us and they said they were leaving food was terrible- they literally left all of their plates mostly full, we should ve taken a cue, but we thought how bad can you mess up french onion soup and a steak sandwich!?!? Now we know

★★★★★
November 22, 2024

Going to a bar is one thing, but going to Samir, Caleb, and Elliot s bar is a whole other experience. They aren t just bartenders; they re artists, therapists, and comedians all rolled into one. You think you re there for the drinks? Wrong. You re there for their 10-minute stand-up routine, expertly timed in between mixing cocktails with the flair of a Broadway performer. Ask for a classic cocktail, and they will give you a story about how they invented the drink one foggy night in Ibiza (though I m pretty sure they ve never been to Spain). But the best part? The drinks are actually amazing. You ll think, Did I just pay for a therapy session and a drink? Yes. Yes, you did. And it was worth every penny. Samir, Elliot, and caleb, my friend, if bartending was an Olympic sport, you d take home the gold and then somehow mix it into an incredible drink. Cheers!

★★★★★
November 22, 2024

Going to a bar with Elliot, Samir, and Caleb behind it is like stepping into the most entertaining (and slightly chaotic) buddy movie of all time. These guys aren t just bartenders they re the Avengers of mixology. Each brings their own special power: Elliot is the Cocktail Whisperer who seems to know your drink order before you even sit down; Samir is the Storyteller, weaving wild tales about how he handcrafted each ingredient himself; and Caleb? Caleb is the guy who somehow keeps it all together while cracking the best one-liners of the night. Order a drink, and you re not just getting a beverage; you re getting a comedy show, a life lesson, and maybe a philosophical debate about tequila vs. mezcal. And if you re lucky, you ll get the rare Three-Bartender High Five a moment you ll tell your grandkids about someday. By the end of the night, you ll have a great drink in hand, tears from laughing, and three new friends you ll definitely trust with all your questionable life decisions. Cheers to the dream team!

Service was ok, our server didnt write anything down and kept having to confirm what we wanted. And a couple of dishes came out in the wrong order. We made reservations - and just in time because they were almost out of spots! Plan ahead. Parking in the area was not great, finally found parking on a side street - but it is a very happening area so it is to be expected. The atmosphere was so cute - tres francais. Vintage vibe - great lighting and windows. Defintely would go back. <3 Parking: Very busy area - no spots available in lot or on the nearby street

The server was understanding and kind but was unable to make reasonable accommodations for our table - perhaps the restaurant was understaffed for the amount of reservations. Food was okay, and our orders steak temperatures were mixed up. Most expensive item on menu (Steak Frites) was mediocre in every regard and not worth the money. Cant say I would recommend this restaurant unless service and food improve.

As a French person, I liked to come for lunch and get « free » bread (like you do in France), a good beef tartare and the duck a l orange dish. I see the tartare and duck are not on the menu anymore, and now bread cost $5.50. I am really sad, this was the only place in Richmond which had a semblant of authentic and affordable french restaurant. Please bring back the old menu. It was perfect.

Huge disappointment. Went to breakfast service after they brought it back. Was slapped in the face with the smell of bleach when I walked in the door. There were no table cloths on the tables. They didn t bring your coffee to the table but rather shouted your name from the bar when it was ready. The coffee was lukewarm. Scones were pretty good but it s not the breakfast service from the pre-pandemic days for sure.

October 22, 2024

The restaurant has a great fun ambiance and unique decor. I understand Sunday brunch on a beautiful holiday weekend is a busy time, but there were so many basic things that do not excuse our extreme wait time of over an hour to get food from when we finally ordered food. 25 minutes after ordering drinks, the waiter coming back if we wanted espresso in the latte. 45 minutes after ordering food, the waiter says they dont have the bread required for someones sandwich. Then five minutes later, they said we actually cant do that at all, but food will be out soon. But it still didnt come for 15 more minutes after we had to ask again. Then when it finally did come, two at a time, the food was cold and clearly had just been sitting outside for a long time. We explained what happened to the manager and she was nice enough to give us a complimentary bread/pastry platter and comp the drinks. The beignets came out hot and fresh, almost an hour before everything else.

The menu is so much smaller than before the ownership change. It s no longer a French restaurant. It s more like French inspired. If macaroni and gruyère cheese is your jam then this is your place. But for real French food, you ll no longer get it here. You ll likely have to go up north to DC. Other than that, the service is good and the atmosphere is still top tier.

Can Can has always been one of my favorite restaurants, but I was so disappointed tonight after taking friends to dinner. Our food took over an hour to come out and when it did three of the four orders were incorrect. The manager was rude and short with us. I am just so sad that the standards of the new management are so far below my experiences in the past.

October 22, 2024

Not even a little bit impressed with Can Can. We had a reservation and arrived on time, waited 15 mins to be sat. Ordered our food and waited an entire hour for it to come out. Barely an apology and nothing removed from the bill although the waitress acknowledged it took too long and actually said it is because of the cocktail shrimp . Huh?! 6 cocktail shrimp held our food up for an hour?? Now onto the food. The beet salad was laughable-about 8 arugula leaves and 3 slivers of beets w/ a little dot of goat cheese the size of a small button. Was gone in 3 bites. The Gruyère Mac was soupy, noodles undercooked, the top wasn t crispy. The sandwiches were decent but nothing I d write home about. The waitress brought us a two croissants while we waited for our food. Thats what we got. Not one item removed from the bill. At least it was expensive ha!. We used to love coming here years ago but it s slowly gone downhill so we give up.

In light of Can Cans recent change of ownership, I am posting this review from dinner in March 24: For Richmonds sake, Can Can needs to get their **** together. On a simple early evening outing for 2 with only 5 items ordered including beverages and the restaurant half full: From beginning to end, Can Cans multi-tiered service heirarchy is no longer enhancing the dining experience, obviously exacerbated by poor front of house communication. After checking in at the front desk with two employees on duty & no acknowledgment of our reservation, our menus were handed to a third who led us to a back section before hesitating & leaving us standing there with an Ill be right back as she returned to the front desk to confirm our table #. Already communications have broken down (a minor interruption but indicative of their service logistics). While not a long wait for our somewhat slovenly but affable server, he was quick with a thwarted Ill be right back while I took 10 seconds to select our wines by the glass. After ordering the first, he assumed by the bottle & was corrected. The second, a simple Cremant, he did not comprehend, so I pointed it out on the menu (maybe these items should be numbered like a Chinese menu?). Again, minor inconveniences. Then Water, Bread & Butter is promptly delivered by a 4th person, presumably a busser or backwaiter. The wait was much longer for our Bubbles to arrive, during which time our food order could have easily been taken. Now the 5th employee serving us (also unkempt) arrives with our Sparklings, which are poured tableside allowing the diner to sample & accept a full pour (a nice touch that has remained since their 2005 opening). Both glasses were good but would have been very good if at proper temperature for sparkling wine (I estimated 47° out of the ice well formerly used for their raw bar but now poorly maintained by a service bartender, which also explains the delay). Our Petit Plateau (chilled Shellfish, Shrimp & Lobster -still a wonderful presentation at Can Can), which again was not intially understood by our server, arrived quickly but the time taken to actually place the order with our server meant that our wines were now above 50° and more than half consumed. I contemplated moving on to a dry Riesling as we started in on our Tower, but unfortunately the seafood did not warrant it. The Oysters, Mussels & particularly the Clams were all excellent with 3 types of Oysters but inexplicably some with abductors separated and some not. The two stars (and expense) of the show were extemely dissappointing. The Shrimp are now unimpressive U16-20s but worse were tough & mealy (I would say cooked, improperly chilled and 2-3 days in the walk-in before served -which a competent kitchen would not). The lobster was so overcooked that I had to resort to my knife, and that with some diffuctly, to portion the tail to share. What a shame. Fortunately Dessert & Cappuccino were good, but (alas, one last but) followed by another unnecessary wait for our check. A management and service structure/logistics reassessment is in order with an emphasis on communication, simplification and ongoing adequate training of service personnel. Furthermore the Chef Owners must rediscover and reinvigorate the passion and maintain the standards that motivated their ambitious purchase from the Ripps.

My wife has always wanted to try out can can for dinner, we went for our anniversary dinner. My steak was very good but my wife ordered the scallops for a whopping 30 bucks but received 5 total scallops. Crazy! Our main concern was our waiter, not once did he give refills to our table for water but every table around us he was very diligent with coming back several times but I think he visited us a total of 3x throughout a 2 hour dinner. He also did something very shady; the drinks took a very long time to come out so we thought he docked our drinks which was very respectable and nice of him to do on the original bill but once my card was taken he added the drinks back without even letting us be aware that he would be adding about 40 dollars back on to the bill. They most certainly do attend to the higher class individuals more attentively which is very sad. We would probably come back but if we had a different server and 5.50 for an extremely small bread basket cmon that s ridiculous.

We love Can Can! It is a Richmond institution. We understand it s been purchased by Boat House, which is fine - great restaurants as well, but having just been there for lunch - and seeing menu changes. Were at least some of your lead staff consulted? - our strong suggestion is, please bring them into communication / processes of this nature. Maybe hold an open, independent, and effective retreat? A small matter in the scheme of things, but why remove Banh oui? Overall, please reinstate the dishes and consider others (e.g., pate). It s a great restaurant! Don t do what corporations so often do during transitions by not talking with the people / experts who make stellar places what they are!

The lunch menu is now a brunch menu, heavy on breakfast. Steak frites is no longer a lunch option. The Beet Salad tasted like the beets were cooked a day ahead and left in the fridge uncovered. The large Beet Salad was a small, a-la-carte-sized portion that looked like an 8-year-old plated it. Waiter was sloppy, in food delivery and pouring wine. Tablemate ordered ham & cheese/Croc Monsieur, it was good, as were the fries.

DO NOT GO TO CAN CAN FOR A DINING EXPERIENCE. It seems that the food may only be an after thought at Can Can. My wife had the Tartare and the Beef Bourguignon. The tartare dish was prepared nicely. This dish does not require any cooking (heat) - so that went well. The Bourguignon uses braised chuck roast (Paleron / Blade Steak). Because this is a tough piece of meat from the shoulder it is slow cooked in liquid (braised) until tender. When done properly it is delicious. I ordered the Escargot . The escargots were served in a monkey dish . A monkey dish is used for serving side dishes. Escargots are traditionally served on an escargots dish with six wells (there are many ways to present it). However, it would not work for Can Can to use any sort of serving dish designed for escargots because Can Can serves only five (05) escargots (no warning on the menu). So as an after thought someone at Can Can decided, Hey, we can just serve these in a monkey dish . I have been eating escargots for 50 years. This is a first. Not a good first. Typically the snails are served with a compound of butter, garlic and parsley as well as baguette for purposes of soaking up the garlic butter. Some will say this is the best part. The garlic butter/parsley was overlooked with these five snails - the shells were not stuffed with the compound butter. Also, I was informed that they do not serve baguette with the snails. Someone at Can Can thinks this is a good idea? I do not know why any trained chef would even agree to send this out of the kitchen. The hostess/manager (?) brought two more snails out - they were prepared properly and were stuffed with garlic butter. All of this about escargots is really only of interest to those that seek out this item on menus. It is a thing at French restaurants and there is some protocol to the serving of escargot. It is lost on Can Can - they really don t get it. I found the menu to be very limited. I did not see anything that night from the entree list that was appealing. I considered ordering the cheese plate but after the escargots I did not trust the kitchen. As a retired chef, the primary statement here is not about the escargot(s) only. It is about the kitchen and the management culture. When I look at this menu I evaluate the number one priority to be profit - Not the dining experience - in fact, I think that the culture here in this restaurant is so far weighted on the side of profits that I can be convinced that the dining experience is only a small part of the conversation. The formula at Can Can appears to be; do the very minimum and charge the maximum (for what you are getting). There is a lot of trust that goes into the relationship between the dinner guest and the restaurant. We spent close to $150 per person. Keep in mind that I did not even eat dinner (wine was $160). I happened to see a gem on what was a narrow minded wine list. The diner (customer) has to trust the restaurant to do their part. The diner s part is to pay. So often restaurants do not do their part but the diner is expected to do their part anyway. Also, it is always a hassle to have to coach the restaurant to do their part as the evening progresses. Especially when it is in the $300 - $500+ range for two. This is NOT what I sign up for. I do not think that it is possible for Can Can to do their part. Service is a big component and the waitstaff presented themselves as unknowledgeable and generally lacking sophistication in the dining room. You will need a lot of luck at Can Can if you are to have a great dining experience. The chances are low. After my last visit I realize that I am not the best customer for Can Can. When I spend $250+ I expect to have a good dining experience. I dont like to go to restaurants spending a lot of money with my fingers crossed. I like the atmosphere and will go back but with low expectations with regard to service and food. Recommendation: Enjoy the Bar Experience & small dish and take your dinner dollars elsewhere.

Our waitress, Ash, was extremely patient, kindly mannered, and quick to get me a new burger when I felt it was undercooked for medium. The food is great but I gave it 4 stars because I am from nyc and often dine at the best restaurants there so I suppose I have very high standards. The burger was massive (the patty was the size of a filet mingon) and well prepared. If I m in Richmond again I will certainly be returning.
