2 E Grace St, Richmond, VA 23219, United States
Casually elegant, French inspired cuisine & cocktails.
The atmosphere is exceptional. You really feel like you’re somewhere special. The menu is outstanding as well. I usually feel lucky to find one or two items that sound good. Their menu had no less than 7 entrees that I would have loved to try. The service was polished and flawless. The food was delicious and exceeded expectations. I only wish I lived in Richmond. This would be my go to restaurant.
Stopped in for happy hour and was blown away by the interior design, the history (1907 wallpaper company), the attentive service and the food and drinks. I came away quite happy indeed 🥳, thank you CF team.
Chef and proprietress Whitney Cardozo has refreshed this legendary Richmond classic into a downtown destination. Mindful of Chez's French roots, Whitney has infused her own spirit into the menu which shines through. The space is a verdant dream and encapsulates the diner in an almost forest-like setting. If you have not dined here in a while, you will most likely remember the gentile service which carries on today. If you're looking for the perfect intimate restaurant to host your next gathering or private party, look no further!
Honestly obsessed. Their vegan menu is unbelievably good. I never thought I would find an upscale french restaurant that could pull off vegan.. I feel blessed that I have! Don’t skip on the risotto!!! The staff are all so amazing and friendly and accommodating. I love the vibe inside I hope one day I can eat dinner while someone is playing piano.
Excellent choice for our anniversary dinner. Our server was very attentive and the food was incredible. My steak was cooked perfectly and the baked Brie appetizer was amazing. I personally am not a fan of cheesecake type flavors so I didn’t like their signature lemon cake but my husband did. They have many other desserts and I enjoyed the toffee cake instead. I did have to put the candle out though because the perfume-y scent was getting to me. Other than that the visit was fantastic!
I'm honestly surprised I haven't reviewed this place before. In my humble opinion, this is the best French restaurant in the whole city. The staff are impeccably kind and attentive, the food selection is great, and the drinks are to die for. The staff treats you like family, and it really makes for an inviting time. The space is also very warm and comforting, which I truly appreciate. Definitely a place you should go for a nice date with someone, or to just have a good dinner and a warm and welcoming space.
This restaurant is a true dining experience. My wife, aunt, uncle, and I ate here when we visited Richmond, VA. The service, food, atmosphere, and entertainment were class A fine dining. Everything we ordered was delicious.
The staff is great, and they are very attentive to detail. The food was some of the best I've had in Richmond, and they really put a lot of care into the dining experience.
Top 3 favorite restaurants in the Jackson ward area. Delicious! Marie Antoinette aesthetic
Absolutely beautiful and unique restaurant. Professional, warm and welcoming staff. Lovely atmosphere, especially with the piano accompaniment some evenings. Sadly the menu never changes and offers no entree special courses. If the usual classic fare was always on point it would be fine, but our dinner this evening was sadly lacking. Our fried oysters were excellent. But we both chose the hanger steak with frites. This was served on a very crowded plate with limp fries and the green beans for all but absentee. This type of steak requires significant tenderizing, usually by marinating for a number of hours in advance. Unfortunately ours was not nearly tender enough. We couldnt see paying $120 for a bottle of Barboursville Octagon when weve been to that nearby vineyard/winery and even stayed in their inn countless times. I wish they had offered our favorite, the lower priced Petite Verdot instead. I would definitely go back for happy hour at the bar and music thoug not necessarily for dinner again... Side note: I love afternoon tea and have done many - DC, NYC, Chicago and even the UK. I brought my three sisters to CF for tea in 2023. The food was definitely very good but there was not nearly enough of it. I always return home with a doggy bag, that time I returned home hungry. My hopes are that this has improved, but I wasnt willing to pay the price for a second trip.
Indubitably delectable
We had a wonderful dinner and the bill was surprisingly low. The oysters and salmon were perfectly prepared and the ambience is straight out of Provence.
We had an incredible dinner with old friends from school, one of whom, happens to be married to the amazingly talented proprietress and chef of Chez Foushee, Whitney Cardozo. The restaurant is beautiful with the ambiance of a French cafe. As a resident of Charleston, the setting and food are on par with our best restaurants. Can t wait to come back!
The atmosphere was beautiful. The food was great. I was thoroughly impressed with the location the ambience and the drinks.
Always a wonderful dining experience. The food is great as is the very attentive staff. Parking: Depending upon the time of day the parking on the street is free. There isnt much street parking available.
Wheelchair accessibility: Interior didn t look wheelchair accessible at first, but there s a side hallway/path to more tables. Don t think the restroom is wheelchair-friendly though Food
I took my wife here for her birthday. They ask what s the occasion? when you make a reservation but I m not sure why, since there was nothing at all different about the experience. Food is very good. You do feel like they are rushing you out which is disappointing when you spend a couple hundred $. Will probably choose somewhere else to celebrate next time.
Phenomenal atmosphere and service. The oyster appetizer and desserts were delicious! Entrees were 4/5 overall, tasty but not notable. Note that almost the whole menu is gluten free which is amazing! Overall a marvelous dinner experience!
We enjoyed an EXCELLENT French restaurant experience. The staff and service were Outstanding! The meals were GREAT
We ve eaten at many of the restaurants Richmond has to offer and this is among the best! The cocktail and wine lists were top tier and there wasn t a single thing on the menu that I m not looking forward to tasting. We had the fried oysters, baguette, risotto, and the crab cake and every bite was delicious! Can t wait to return and try more! Highly recommend!
Nice atmosphere, great food! Enjoyed my lavender mocktail very much!
Such a charming dining experience in downtown Richmond! The food, the drinks, the staff, the atmosphere...its a perfect combination for a night on the town or a romantic date night. Be sure to try the specialty cocktails as they are *chefs kiss*.
I LOVE this place! It is so gorgeous inside and all the staff were very nice. We went on a Friday and there was live music which was great. All the food was delicious and so were the cocktails. Will definitely be returning!
We sat in the bar area which was very comfortable and would recommend if you dont have a reservation. KAITLIN the bartender served us as well as managed all drinks for the restaurant. She is perfect in every way. Overall the restaurant has outstanding service, excellent food and a really nice atmosphere. The fried oysters are fabulous. The steak frites was the best I ever had, tender as can be.
Amazingly beautiful interior decor. One of the chic-est, most instagrammable Richmond restaurants! Food was great, but not excellent. Service was so-so (seemed like the main waiter was a bit overwhelmed and still had to train someone). Would still definitely come back, if only just for the VIBES- you will def feel fancy dining here!
It was a great experience with my friends and the service was excellent, food exquisite. I can t wait for it ! I really want to repeat the experience!
The best food and ambience in Richmond. They also have incredible vegan options. Such a special place.
My favorite restaurant in Richmond. The food is incredible (with great vegan options). The service is perfect. And it s the best ambiance / decor! Perfect for any night out.
Outstanding evening.
Service and atmosphere are amazing here. The food was disappointing though, unfortunately. We found the fried oysters too wet and flavorless. The salad was minimal. I ordered the steak frites medium, and was served rare steak - they ended up taking it back and heating it, but it came back well done. Oh well. My husbands salmon dish was too charred on the bottom and tasted burnt - overall, not seasoned enough. For the price point, I definitely wont be returning. I had high hopes for a French-style steak frites but it just isnt it.
A fantastic dining experience! This is the place to go in Richmond!
Excellent gluten free menu, wonderful cozy ambiance, and friendly staff. The food was amazing and the drinks were great as well. My only small complaint is that the drinks took a little while, but it was no big deal as we really enjoyed our time here and the food was absolutely incredible. The GF crab cakes were the best I ve ever had.
Always excellent. Beautiful ambience and charming architecture. Great food and drink.
This is an EXCELLENT restaurant. The decor, the team, the food it s all very good. I had the winter salad (blueberries were perfect), the crab cake (no breadcrumbs which means a lot of crab) and you could almost smell the Chesapeake Bay in each bite. Dessert was toffee cake w caramel and the smallest scoop of vanilla ice cream which was good but I wished I d picked the lemon dessert they are known for or the mousse. Wait staff were excellent. Can t say enough about them. Only thing that could have been better was the selection of higher end digestifs (which is a super minor thing) but for this style restaurant to be limited to a bottle of VS Courvoisier as their cognac option (esp for a French restaurant) seems like an easily fixed miss. Great place and I will try to go anytime I am in RVA.
When my wife & I want a romantic evening this is where we go.
Fine dining with superb service. Great experience.
Always a pleasure. The buttery lemon tart is the best desert of my life.
Awesome place with phenomenal service. Will be returning
Pretty happening place on a Friday night. Food was good, cocktails good, company was excellent!! Settling up the check took about a half hour but still a great time!
Simply AMAZING the service as well as the food. My honey did an awesome job selecting this restaurant.
My friend and I walked in to sit at the bar for the first time, not realizing how underdressed we were. I don t remember her name, but the bartender was so friendly and welcoming, and she slings some amazing drinks. Amazing service, good food, fantastic drinks. Thank you :)
Outstanding food and atmosphere. The trout was mouth watering and the sauces really wonderful. Unreservedly recommend this place.
Incredible. 1920s atmosphere. Steak frites, baked cheese, salad with berries and chevre and Incredible cocktails. White linen, fresh flowers, table top lantern. Very elegant, yet approachable and cozy. Great service by Kenny. Price point for 3 was very reasonable.
I only had a drink at the bar here. Seems very nice. Great atmosphere. I hated their red wines by the glass, too French and too tasteless. Still, i want to go back for a nice dinner.
Best food in the city
For a special date/occasion, this place is perfect. Fantastic decor, servers very sweet and attentive, and food is all solid. Had risotto, white bean hummus, baked brie. Many of the dishes are classic French offerings but others are very creative twists on French dishes.
Piano player, wonderful dinner!
The food here is amazing, the beef bourguignon was one of the best dishes I have had in a long time. The service was also wonderful. The crème brûlée and lemon butter cake are standouts. I can t wait to go back again soon.
I love Chez Foushee. Great food, fantastic service and lovely atmosphere. Its always a pleasure.
May be the best spot for a romantic dinner in RVA
Fabulous French food and fantastic service!!
New decor looks great. Incredible ambiance. Swift service. Food was tasty.
Beautiful restaurant in Richmond. The food and service were excellent! Parking is street parking but usually not too hard to find. Went on one of their nights they have Candlelit dinners with piano music it was magical. Our server, Anthony, was an absolute gem. Highly recommend the Brie appetizer and the crab cake! The drinks were great too they even accommodated me when I asked for something not on the menu (bay breeze drink). Overall, it was a fabulous experience and the restaurant has great ambiance. Can t wait to go back!
Really excellent meal and service. Very intimate, refined and quiet
Our most recent visit to Chez Foushee was for a private event that was lovely, but since the change of ownership in 2017 Ive been for brunch and dinner w/ my husband and lunch w/ co-workers. All of which were exceptional. The food is freshly prepared using local and seasonal ingredients to create unique combinations and sauces that make you want to lick the plate. Beautiful updates to the decor have made the space more open while still feeling intimate. Its a great place for catching up with friends for brunch, a romantic dinner to celebrate a special anniversary/event or for a fun night out when they have Piano Karaoke.
We went on an off chance and ended up having one of the best, if not THE best meal I have ever eaten in a restaurant- the bordelaise sauce was incredible and the chef Whitney amazing, all the staff were wonderful and the service was superb. The setting is stunning - 100% recommend to any one in Richmond living or visiting 5 stars all the way!
Just a terrific experience! Casual but elegant. Everything was fresh and delicious. Interesting wine list. Great ambiance. It was absolutely great! A spot that would be a regular nice evening out.
Great food service and staff. Love the new upgrades
I believe that I ordered a filet mignon and it was PERFECT. I should have written this review a while ago bc the memories were so much fresher in my mind. However it was absolutely amazing service and delicious wine. One of the best restaurants in Richmond 4 sure. I highly recommend it- worth the money.
Fantastic food and one of the best dining experiences Ive had in Richmond!
Great drinks, incredible atmosphere, expert management. The owner greeted us at the door, then made our drinks. Live piano Friday and Saturday nights. Walking in this place is like going back in time. You feel disconnected from today in all the right ways. Will be back. Highly recommend.
Fabulous dinner, creative menu. Good wine lost, fun piano music. Russell is the best
A spectacular dinner at home for nine that could not have been better! Beautifully presented and all guests raved about the food. Friendly delightful service by all and the entire dinner made for a special family gathering.
Wonderful staff, great food. Newly redecorated.
Amazing food and service at a very reasonable price. Our first meal in Richmond. We will be back!!
Delicious, fancy, fun spot for a cute date. Try their espresso Martini for a tiramisu like flavor!
We went here for brunch and it was surprisingly empty. It s a fancy restaurant and it was hard to chose from their tasty-sounding menu, but we ended up getting the crab Benedict and creme brûlée French toast. The crab Benedict came with hash browns and fruit, and the French toast came with strawberries and whipped cream on top. Creme brûlée French toast was more like a pound cake though it made it more unique it could function more as a dessert than an entree. Crab Benedict had only a complete pieces of shell that I noticed, and the poached eggs on top we re good. We also got some Rose tea (which had a fancy-sounding name). It was aromatic yet quite strong. Since we checked-in using Yelp, we got two free truffle pieces. It is worth trying their brunch as they have some unique and good tasting menu items to choose from.
I am sorry guys I was so immersed in the food experience that I forgot to take any pictures... but this place does not need pictures to be described. Chez Foushee is by far one of my favorite places in Richmond. It wasnt just about the drinks and food but an overall amazing experience with the faint fragrance of lillies, interesting conversation with the bar tender, the beautifully decorated place and most importantly a perfectly cooked duck breast paired with the right wine.
Risotto with shrimp was delicious. I was there with 2 couples. Everyone was pleased with their meal and the service. A real plus was that it is not a loud restaurant.
Wow this place is great. The staff is on point and the food is excellent. The omelette was superbly French complemented with perfectly seasoned crispy potatoes. I will be coming back next time Im in town.
Fantastic meal with great service!
For a company party. Catered well.
Great place for a date or even a relaxed lunch. Great food and very accommodating. Cocktails are top notch!
Very nice evening. Took a while to get our 1st course but after that service was perfect. Food was delicious!
My wife and I and another couple had a delightful Valentines day dinner.
Food, ambience and service were amazing!!
Great service and drinks. The menu looked great, but the food didnt live up to the expectation.
The food is astounding. I had the trout. The creme brulee was a perfect ending. Congratulations to Whitney.
The food was excellent, and our waiter Jason was awesome. He was super willing to talk to us about the cheese selection and he took good care of us. Be prepared to spend some time here, but it will be an enjoyable time.
Always good for lunch. The crabcake sandwich was generous with crab meat and very flavorful.
Lovely. Excellent cuisine and superb service.
A gem that Richmonders tend to take for granted because Chez Foushee has been a staple for so long. Well not make that mistake again. The restaurant is incredibly appointed with high ceilings and a color scheme that seems to create light. The service was outstanding - the waiter noticed our poached eggs were cooked solid & had the kitchen remake our meals without us saying a word about it, except thank you. Once the eggs were cooked correctly, the Benedict brunches (one traditional, one crabcake) were fantastic with a hollandaise sauce that is probably the best in the city. The brunch cocktail menu was a great blend of both traditionals and new takes on old favorites. We are so happy that Chez Foushee quietly continues to be a Richmond delight.
Attentive staff. Nice setting. Good food even though my duck was underdone in places.
Great food and the service is excellent!!
Good food and service
Good food friendly staff
Amazingly delicious brussel sprouts salad. Cute French-style restaurants the heart of downtown RVA.
Such a lovely restaurant. The food and service are always flawless.
Dinner last night with my daughter. Excellent meal. Waiter and service were fantastic!
Gorgeous ambiance, personalized service, tasty dishes! Great for date night!
What an impeccable dinning option! They have never disappointed me. Thats cuisine is artfully delivered and their specials are unique. Ive found that while reservations are appreciated, they are able to accommodate walk-ins. Its been very crowded when Ive been. The wait staff is very kind and welcoming.
Very nice pre-play dinner spot. Gotta try the lemon cake.. Though its closer to a lemon chess deep dish pie.
Didnt order
We went during restaurant week which I think was a mistake but the food and service were good enough to make me want to go back and try it again.
Wow......super clean and super loving hard working staff.
Great food!!

Good French option. A bit in the pricey side.
Great food, wonderful atmosphere and lovely wait staff. A little pricey, so dont go often.
Always treated with class!
The wine is priced fairly and they offer classic cocktails and martinis of all kinds. Each dish is balanced and matched perfectly with complementing sides. You cant miss the cod or the duck! Save room for dessert so you can taste the lemon butter cake.
Consistently delicious food! Excellent service and friendly staff.
Great service..Great food!
LOVE LOVE LOVE the Lemon Butter Cake!!! The staff is great and the food is wonderful too!!
This location has a nice and inviting atmosphere. We went here for Sunday brunch. The drinks were over priced and underwhelming. The staff was not very knowledgeable. We asked about their eggs Chesapeake, they said it was lump crab in the crab cake and believed them. The crab was shredded and very breaded. They also were out of the goat cheese for their eggs Benedict, so I got the quiche of the day which was obviously just microwaved. They over charged for the drinks, and did not check to see how our food was. Will not be returning.
Amazing
Food was excellent. Friendly and prompt service.
Great foods, service and atmosphere. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit!
Little Chez Deli & Cafe The tastiest food. Love Didos quiche. The friendliest people. Wish they were open 7 days a week!
Great beef dip... Was expecting a little more creole though...
We got the best seats in the house! This is such a nice, little place with plenty of huge windows and a beautiful marble bar. The service was great...food came out quickly. They changed my meal to suit me more but forgot two of the ingredients the meal was supposed to come with...which made the meal not taste so great. Aside from that, it didnt have much hollandaise and the fries were tasteless. For RVA, the food is probably pretty good, but for NOVA its mediocre. I usually dont have to ask for hot sauce, at a place like this, but I did. Otherwise the place was beautiful and service was amazing.
Cute, quiet spot for dinner. Amazing waitstaff. Delicious shrimp and grits.
Great food
We split bacon-sauteed brussell sprouts, seafood crepe, hangar steak with pomme frites, lemon butter cake, and creme brulee. I found the lemon butter cake mildly disappointing mostly because its not a butter cake at all, but a cheese cake on a shortbread crust. As delicious as that sounds, Im just not a fan of cheesecake and would not have ordered it but for the misnomer. Having said that, my dining companion did not love it either after we traded. Everything else was perfect including the service. $110 with tip included a beer, a ginger ale, and a coffee so $$$$, but this sweet little dining room is unique architecturally and otherwise.
Food was pretty good but service was phenomenal! Jason was a delight I would come back just for his service.
Great but fancy
Love the rib-eye! Great service. Definitely pricey, but amazing rib-eye
I really enjoyed this place! We showed up around 6:20pm for a 6:00pm reservation for 10 and they were still able to accommodate us without a problem. The server (Jason) was very personable and did a great job explaining the dishes to our group. I got the pimento cheese spread for an appetizer had the Duck Breast with Duck Confit as my entree. Both were phenomenal! The breast was perfectly cooked and not oily at all, yet it was quite juicy. The price tag was just over $110 for me and my wife including 1 cocktail, 4 beers, an appetizer, 2 entrees and tip. Overall great experience....we will be back.
Delicious French cuisine, classy environment, happy service, and excellently balanced flavors.
Very cool building and very good food. Wait staff was very accommodating. Brunch was delicious.
Duck was great! Gnoochi was not so good.. great service.
The food was great, the waiter was awesome.
Typical little city restaurant
Outstanding! Excellent food, excellent service. Jason was terrific server.
We have been many times over the years, a bit fancy, great food, great service. Great desserts! One of the better burgers in town too. Soups also noteworthy.
This is another place where I cant hear myself talk; half of the dinner Im pretending to hear what the other person said because Ive gotten tired of asking them to repeat. The noise is so overwhelming, at least at lunch, that I cant remember anything about the food. But, it must have been alright otherwise Id remember to write a review about.
The food was great. The staff took care of all the guests in a friendly and timely manner. Just an amazing experience.
Great place with nice staff good food and clean tables. My only complaint: the bathroom was not particularly clean.
We had the pimento cheese app, sprout and bacon salad, scallops, and short ribs. Our waiter did an excellent job of helping us make selective based on our tastes and the drinks paired perfectly. We will absolutely be going back. The atmosphere was also perfect.
Wow
Definitely between 3 and 4. I recently went with my fiancé and we had a pretty good experience. We were greeted pretty quickly when we entered, although we got kind of a stuffy, did you make a reservation? We started with the pimento cheese. It was tasty and the portion was good. Next we each had a salad- my fiancé had the Caesar and was pleased. I was disappointed there was only one option without anchovies or bacon, so I had the market salad, which was ok. It was described as having red leaf lettuce, but was made with another variety, and the tomatoes werent great, being that its February. For our entrees we had the red fish special with winter veggies and horseradish, which was well-cooked overall very good, and the gnocchi which was also very good. Good atmosphere, service, and food. Well probably be back.
The Lemon Butter Cake!!
One my favorite Richmond restaurants and the best place to have a party. The food never disappoints. The service is impeccable and so are the drinks. Are making a reservation yet?
I had a luncheon here for about a dozen family members after a funeral. The staff were gracious and helpful, and the food was outstanding. Looking forward to returning under happier circumstances!
Great food, excellent service. Best part - the coffee was amazing.
Unbelievably good food! Try the potato cake crusted grouper! Fantastic for a dinner party of 12!
Last night my fiancé and I went to Chez Foushee for the first time and had an incredible experience!! The restaurant is absolutely adorable inside, the tables were well spaced out and private, the staff was incredibly kind and the food was delicious! I am looking into having my bridal luncheon here. One of the finer Richmond restaurants!
Heaven is a place where nothing ever happens, but Chez Foushee is as close to heaven as I have ever experienced, and the food and service are definitely happening there. My daughter and I had a wonderful meal there before seeing Mame at Virginia Rep Theatre. I left the choice of restaurant to my daughter, since she is in that industry. I must have raised her right. When we were about to leave for the theatre, I said, the only bad thing about this meal is that it is over. But the serving size was just right - dont get me wrong. Its just that I was enjoying myself so much that I didnt want it to stop.
Great ambiance and attentive service. Called ahead re wheelchair access and experienced a warm welcome and table already set up. Spinach Rockefeller bisque was subtle with a little heat. Also enjoyed the famous decadently deliscious lemon butter cake. Would come back in a heartbeat!
Went here for a late Valentines Day dinner and came away very impressed. The ambiance was very nice. Located right on the corner, hardwood floors, white table cloths, very classy. Our waiter was very attentive and helpful with the menu selections. The Osso Bucco was excellent. Their Lemon Butter Cake, which they are known for, is also a must try.
Went there for restaurant week, definitely will go back. Friendly service, beautiful restaurant, excellent food. Portions were just right. Must try lemon butter cake.
Caters amazing staff that are incredibly willing to help make sure your wants and needs are met. Very polite and respectful with a friendly feeling. The Tomato Bisque is phenomenal! And I was also advised to try the lemon-butter cake. I will definitely be coming back for their 3 Course Meal for $25 on a Friday or Saturday and will bring a couple friends to enjoy the meal too! Atmosphere is definitely that of a fine-dining restraunt (even for their lunch options) - I guess it caters to the white collar/business class of RVA that doesnt work too far from the restaurant. Looking forward to a sit-down dine-in experience here.
