Casual brick-lined Italian restaurant with a full bar & plenty of calamari dishes on the menu.
Edo’s is a true gem that combines a welcoming ambiance with top-tier cuisine. From the street art and eclectic exterior to the cozy interior, the vibe here is effortlessly Richmond. The food was nothing short of outstanding. The hanger steak (pictured) was cooked to perfection—juicy, tender, and full of flavor, complemented beautifully by the peppery arugula and rich sauce. The duck was equally impressive, with a crispy exterior and succulent meat, while the rockfish was light, flaky, and perfectly seasoned. The wine list offered a great selection that paired well with the dishes, and the service was friendly and attentive without being overbearing. Pro tip: get a reservation!
We dined here recently the portion sizes were generous. We started with the calamari, which was fresh but unfortunately bland and didn’t come with marinara sauce. The table next to us got calamari as well, and their server asked immediately if they wanted sauce, but we didn’t get the same offer. If our server had checked on us, we definitely would have asked for it. I ordered the karl - garlic, olive oil, and mushrooms, which was good. My husband had the sausage, ricotta, and broccoli rabe, but the sausage was still in its casing, which we found unusual. We had high expectations for the dish but were a bit disappointed. The bread they served was nice, but again, our server barely checked on us, so I didn’t get the chance to ask for butter. While the portions were large, the lack of attention from our server took away from the experience. The food was decent overall, but the service left room for improvement.
First time seated at bar. Lydia and Sally were extremely helpful and friendly with us in making choices of food, wine and cocktails. Learned more things about the items on the menu. Had a fabulous time and can’t wait to return. Eggplant parmigiana we split as appetizer and it was huge had to get a to go box. Shrimp with basil was delicious. Out of the world Tiramisu not pictured and got 2 to go!
Cool vibes here in this eclectic Italian restaurant. As soon as we entered the restaurant we saw a basket of fresh garlic ready to be peeled, some were. You can taste how freshly made garlic infused dishes are. This place fills up fast however they do take reservations. Service was right on time, no rush. And the best flavors of this food. My husband had the Veal piccata, which was so tender. He cut it with his fork. The rockfish was just as delicate, meaty and spiced up, just right. Before you start the entrées, there are lots of wonderful appetizers to start my all-time favorite delicious creamy pasta Gorgonzola.
Phenomenal food, excellent service, great value for price. Atmosphere is unassuming and inoffensive but non-contributory. Will happily go again and recommend all my friends visiting Richmond do the same 😍
It's called edo squid, just get the white bean and squid dish. Life changing! Literally, sad it took me this long to eat here. Shame on me, great service, killer wine list at great prices. Every dish at the place I saw looked amazing. The tiramisu was delicious and could legit taste the booze, so good and light. Can't wait to eat here with many people and order a ton more to try.
4.5 ⭐️ My brother who lives in Richmond recommended we give this a try. We were a bit confused at first. It looks like you're walking up a staircase into a broom closet (literal brooms hanging on door). Once you open the door, there's an open room with tables. It's a pretty tight fit, but they make it work. A reservation is a must! I will say this, what they do, they do well. First I'll mention what we weren't fans of. There's so much room to expand the "full bar." Not sure about the other spirits, but Bombay Sapphire was the only gin option 🫤. Our boys ordered soda, which came in cans. A heads-up would have been good, especially for $3 a can. Also, the portions are massive. Again, a heads-up would have been good, that way we wouldn't have ordered 4 mains. We had enough leftovers for another 4-6 people, and the leftovers are going back to our hotel. There are 2 choices for pasta...spaghetti or penne. More options would be nice and maybe even gnocchi. Second, what we liked. The dishes were incredibly flavorful, and definitely priced well for the quantity you're given. Their calamari might be the best I've had. It's good on its own without the need for marinara or alternate sauce. The bread was fantastic! Zero complaints on how the food tasted. The chefs know what they're doing! There were 2 desserts and we shared them. They were tasty. The servers all helped each other out, which is nice to see. Service was amazing! 4.5 ⭐️ We recommend!
An absolute delight! We arrived promptly at 5pm. With no reservation, but first in line, we were seated at a wonderful table near the window. We started with the fried calamari and braised fennel. Would highly recommend the fried calamari! The portions are large so be willing to share main courses. 2 mains can feed four people comfortably. We ordered the double cut pork chop Marsala and spaghetti broccoli rob garlic olive oil with ricotta. Best pork chop of my life! We tried a cannoli which was yummy but was not the mind-blowing experience that the rest of our meal was. The service was excellent especially considering how packed and busy it got. One of the best restaurants I've been to in Richmond easily!
We ate here with a group of friends. The meal was served family style so we split 4 different entrees and appetizers. Everything was delicious and I would love to eat here again. The entrance was a little hard to find. Its just a door leading to steps to the second floor, but what a hidden gem.
Nothing beats Edo s squids seafood options. Had their sea bass with garlic pasta and tiramisu. For starters I had their squid salad which was sooo good.
If you like Italian - not crappy Italian, but really good Italian, go. Just go. We are from Chicago, and we would put this one right up there. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
Fun and absolutely delicious!!!
This is probably the worst dining experience I have had in 10 years. I dont think anything worked well. The greeter was a sour-puss. Our large party was crammed so close to the table behind us, that neither side could get up until the meal was over for both parties. The place was shockingly loud. The table of 10 was set with only one set of salt and pepper, and one set of oil and vinegar. The service was quite slow, and we had to ask multiple times for basics, like water. Our server didnt seem the slightest bit interested in our our experience and virtually never checked on us. The worst, however, is the ordering policies and the payment policies. We were a large group with quite diverse food interests, and we were required to figure out which 3-4 entrees we wanted to share. The food quantity was good (all-you-can-eat per item, basically). If you like vegan or funky menu items, its good, but for traditional Italian, I found one entree to eat, from the entire menu. For food quality, it was average, at best. For payment, the restaurant would not split the bill. It had to be divided equally. Some of us had cocktails, and others didnt. I guess it was expected that wed use calculators and divide the bill up amongst ourselves. Family-style eating is one thing, but family-style ordering and family-style paying is beyond ridiculous. Do not go here unless you know in advance what each person wants, and how each person will want the bill divided.
AMAZING food and great portions for the price. Everything we have tried has been delicious!!! Only downsides are you need a reservation and there isnt much standing room to wait for your table. Even with a reservation we waited over 30 minutes for our table. -- food was absolutely worth the wait though! It isnt handicap accessible and need to go up a long flight of stairs. It is a tight fit and very loud, so not a good spot for chatting. I think this place is amazing and such a wonderful local find! I would highly recommend it!!
As always with this place the food, service and atmosphere were great!
Mattie was a complete delight. The staff worked so hard and well together. The appetizers, main courses , and desserts were simply fabulous. We have special food needs of alpha-gal and no dairy and they accommodated us with no problems or anything but joy to serve those needs. An amazing restaurant for staff and food. Thank you Edo Squid. Dietary restrictions: We have an alpha- gal and dairy restriction person and they were accommodated in a superior manner and gave this person complete trust. Kid-friendliness: We were there at the five oclock opening and were genuinely accepted with a somewhat discontented 15 month old and it was completely ignored.
Mussel (appertizer) with tomato sauce is delicious. The portion of pasta is huge (enough for 2 adults).
The best Northern Italian west of Genoa. Great dishes, and superb service.
The food tasted good, but I would like to see more inventiveness with the pastas and side dishes. We ordered 4 entrees and all were served with pasta. It seems like the fish (which was amazing) would have been better complimented by some greens or other vegetables versus mounds of pasta (with not quite enough sauce). Also, there were only 5 shrimp in the shrimp dish. For the price, I expected more shrimp or again, something else besides pasta. The appetizers are what shone here. We all left saying that we wished we had just ordered a bunch of appetizers instead of mains. The squid bean salad, and really all the salads were excellent. The fried squid was done perfectly as well, though strange it didn t come with any dipping sauce. Dietary restrictions: Not gluten free friendly, all sides were pasta which I couldn t eat
Love this place and their family style giant bowls of pasta!
CHARGED FOR ANOTHER TABLE S DINNER!!! NOT EDO SQUID s PROBLEM !!! MANAGEMENT We reserved a table for four and treated one in our group to birthday dinner here a week ago. Little did we know, we also ended up treating someone else to dinner to the tune of $86.26 which was charged to two of our credit cards! The server brought a receipt to our table saying they had issued a Refund to the charged cards. We then paid for our dinner for four. One week later, 4 phone calls to EDO Squid, online checks of card charges, and NO REFUND!! Today I spoke with Mattie, who said there was no manager on duty despite being a popular Saturday evening, rudely informed me they had already issued a Refund that same evening and there was nothing else they would/could do. The problem was with either our bank or with American Express and I needed to take it up with the card company! Mattie then hung up mid sentence. Obviously American Express immediately repaired the fraudulent charge. And to the public CAVEAT EMPTOR . Edo Squid ultimately responded to the above review and credited both credit cards charged for the added charges. Thank you American Express for intervening.
The food was amazing!!! It was a small restaurant PACKED with people and loud! But the food was worth it. They have a small staple menu and then a rotating special menu posted on the wall and everything I ate was so freaking good! The appetizer portions are definitely for the table to share and the desserts were so good!
The swordfish was to die for. I have never had such a delicious fish! It was topped with a balsamic vinegar glaze and caramelized onions, and served with pasta. I had it for breakfast this morning too (huge portion) and it was still delicious today!
This place is a great surprise and if you have never been, I highly recommend it. Go with an appetite and ready to eat some great seafood. The vibe is urban and classy. The drinks are great. Try the branzino for sure.
Excellent service and food was fantastic!
Two choice of pasta. Sauces are below par no consistency or flavor. Walk in and see a table of garlic mess. Why? Wasted seating. Not much protein options. No caesar salads. Ravioli or lasagna would add a great deal to menu.
Great food, excellent service, and fair price.
If I could give 10 stars I would, some of best Italian food Ive had in Richmond City
We did a walk-in. Reservation recommended. Sat at the bar but it was worth it. Food was very good. Had to be selective based on my diet. Cant wait to go back with no limitations. Never had veal short ribs. But I have now and they were delicious. Service at the bar was top shelf.
The ambiance is great! Such a cool place and great food!
Ive been coming here for YEARS! The quality of the food has been consistent to its core! Highly recommend if youre looking to have a nice meal in the VCU area. Food
Everything about this place is fantastic. Its exactly perfect. Wheelchair accessibility: This place IS NOT wheelchair accessible. Food : 5/5 |
Unique food
I dined alone and ordered the fried squid, eggplant parmigiana and a side of spaghetti. Side of spaghetti was not listed on the menu, but it was $8. Spaghetti was al dente. Fried squid was well done. Perfectly fried and seasoned. Eggplant parmigiana was very good and was enough food for 3 people. Only negative was that the marinara was a bit salty. I couldn t finish my meal and had everything boxed. Loved that they wrote the name of the dish on the boxes.
Simply the BEST! Always consistent. The food is so fresh. Great staff. Classic Italian Restaurant.
The veal marsala was thinly sliced, tender, and flavorful. A bit sweet but good. The caprese was very fresh and well seasoned. The variety of green to red tomatoes gave it a good contrast in sweetness. The mozzarella was fresh and not salty. Olive oil had a garlic spice infusion that gave it good depth in flavor. The duck was cooked medium and complimented with a sweet wine reduction. The polenta was crispy but a bit salty. Marinara meat sauce was ok, I would omit the lemon acidity. It ruined it for me a bit.
Super tasty, get the broccoli rabe or the gorgonzola pasta. Does not split checks so be aware of dining with a group
My dish was excellent! Host a bit rude. Waitress was excellent. The place is very dark. It was packed when we arrived so it was very noisy. It got better after a while. I think the food is overpriced though
Always delicious!! Richmond staple.
Always wonderful
The food here is interesting and excellent. TheBroccolini app is recommended. Both the white and red sauces for the pastas are well done. The white is tasty and not too thick. The red is spicy and robust. Good wine selection. I personally like the funky stairs. Vegetarian options: Several Veggie apps and many pasta options
The entrance looks like you re walking into a broom closet. The food took an hour. The quail was bland and tasteless, the shrimp pasta was good but not good enough for the price, and the eggplant penne was also soggy and just fine. The server was informative and friendly. This place was talked up but I don t know what for. I ended up spending $60 for mediocre pasta dishes.
Always a great local place to dine in Richmond. The food is always consistent.
Fantastic food, but the servers and the dining room act like they wish youd stayed home
As good as everyone says it is
Edit from first experience: I went with a friend and this experience was much better. I got the oysters again because why not. For my entree, I got the veal marsala, which was very tasty. It had notes of white truffle which gave it a sweet flavor. My friend got the carbonara and let me try some. That was also very tasty. I still don t really like their red sauce but hey, everyone has different opinions about that. Overall, this experience was much better than the first time. I don t like how cramped it is and if you are a bigger person like myself, you will find it a bit uncomfortable. Their atmosphere is just okay, in my opinion. Wish they had more elbow room. What started out as unique slowly turned into a lack luster experience. This was my first time so I needed some coaching from my table and the server. We were a party of 5, so we were forced to order family style . This was something that I personally wanted to avoid, since it s cold and flu season and my friends can be forgetful about used utensils when having wine. Back to the family style , it was explained that we could order as many appetizers as we want and choose up to four entrees. This was a confusing process, the server s explanation of the appetizers was unclear. I suggest the restaurant to consider having an explanation of their rules on the back of the menu so that there are no surprises. I personally did not enjoy this family style concept because my table had different desires from my own when it came to picking food items. I ended up being the person who did not get to pick an entree, which is our own problem but I can see how it s an issue for any party of 5+. I did get to pick two appetizers, the fried squid and oysters. They were both delicious. In fact, I asked for more oysters. One note would be some sauce served with these items. One friend picked the conch and roasted red pepper with mozzarella, both were fine. Now on to the entrees. The Rockfish: VERY over seasoned, (way too salty to enjoy), and the skillet they served it on must had been extremely hot because the fish stuck to it and dried out most of the fillet. The Pork Chops: Dry and overcooked, the sauce or Demi glaze did not add much flavor for me but the white beans served with it were tasty. The Monkfish: Zero flavor and odd texture. I ve never had monkfish before but the way it was prepared and served was odd. It was offered roasted (which is what we should had done) or in their spicy red sauce. I was not a fan. The Hanger Steak: Ordered rare but cooked medium. It s such a huge piece of meat that you would hate to complain about the temperature so I let it go. Why complain about that when the rest of the food was unpleasant. All but one of these entrees were served with pasta, which the red sauce was not tasty and had a slight burnt taste. I recognized that flavor because I ve done it before. You are supposed to either dump it in another pot or throw it out if you stirred the burnt stuff in. I did not enjoy that the only light in the small apartment room was from the street light outside. I like to see what I am putting in my body and to do this would mean whipping out my phone light and annoying the entire world. What if there was a bug? Extra protein I guess? Give me a break. I truly wanted to enjoy this restaurant experience but overall, I was disappointed at every aspect. Would I try it again? I m unsure but I definitely won t come with a group larger than 4. Couldn t provide pictures of our food because it was so dark in the dining area and I wasn t going to draw an audience with flashing lights.
From my experience the other night if you have food allergies or restrictions this is not the place to go.
Hostess is rude to the 10th degree. Had reservations arrived early.. asked to wait at the bar which we did There was an open table the entire time we waited. At our reservation time we asked for the same table but were told that we re waiting for someone that was at least 15 minutes late. The hostess was incredibly rude. We will never dine at Edo s Squid ever again. The hostess should not be in the front of the house. Lacks customer relations skills.
Celebrated my sons birthday with 5 adults and a toddler!Ordered family style which was 4 entrees and several appetizers and dessert. ...and two bottles of montepulchino wine. Everything was absolutely delicious! A wonderful evening with family! A note of caution...the 2nd floor steps to the restaurant might seem a bit steep to some...so tread lightly! Will definitely be returning for another awesome meal
Everything was fabulous!
Great service, amazing food with generous quantities at a great price. Everything was so delicious and we will definitely be back!
First time at Edo s last night. There was a couple walking up the stairs in front of us as we went in, and when we got to the door, a waitress said I need that cup and yanked it out of the woman s hand as she walked off. She was the same waitress that sat us, but not who took our order. The waitress who took our order was extremely rude almost the entire time. A couple of times she brought food out and put it on our table AS she s walking by. I stopped her once, to ask if we could have our bread warmed as it was cold. She barely stopped as she said no. And continued walking. The waitresses were rude and made me feel so uncomfortable with their terrible attitudes. Atmosphere is a little cramped but it was fine. The food was AMAZING though. It was really hot, and the pasta portions were GENEROUS.
Dont let the unassuming entrance fool you! Edos Squid offers one of the best dining experiences in Richmond. The walk up the stairs evokes a dive bar vibe, and the entrance itself feels more like a kitchen door. But push through, and youll find yourself transported to a charming, intimate space. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, with tables close enough to encourage conversation (which most patrons seemed happy to do!). We arrived without a reservation and were graciously added to the waiting list. The friendly bartender even offered us fresh bread to accompany our drinks while we waited at the bar. The staff, from the bartenders to the servers, were all incredibly attentive and helpful throughout the evening. The food itself was simply divine. We started with perfectly cooked fried squid, lightly dusted and seasoned. The portion was generous, so be warned you might not want to finish it all before the main course arrives! We also enjoyed a white bean and arugula salad with squid, a delicious vegetarian option with a tangy vinaigrette dressing. The creamy white beans were a delightful textural contrast. But the true star of the show was the spaghetti with crab. The portion was massive, perfect for sharing. The light tomato sauce perfectly complemented the crab, allowing its flavor to shine through. Every bite was a revelation. Edos Squid is a hidden gem in Richmond. The combination of friendly service, a charming atmosphere, and absolutely incredible food makes it an experience worth every penny. Well definitely be back for more!
2024.3.5 We went to this restaurant just after visiting the Virginia Museum of Art. Its less than 5 oclock and the door hasnt opened yet, but there are already more than a dozen people waiting in line. When the door opened at the right time, I went upstairs and saw several staff peeling garlic . The rich aroma of garlic whets your appetite. The simple layout is combined with the delicious food afterwards, and the taste is huge. This is the full Italian grandma s home-cooked flavor in my mind! You must have a meal here when you come to Richmond! Unfortunately, there were too many people, so I was embarrassed to take pictures. We just came to this restaurant after visiting the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. When it opened on time, I went upstairs and saw several staff members peeling garlic in a chic manner. The rich aroma garlic hit me and whetted my appetite. Dont let the lackluster stairway entry fool you. The food at Edos is always delicious. Starters, pasta and seafood are always gorgeous. If youre not sure what to order ask your server for a recommendation! Call for reservations if you can because there will be a line to get in before the doors open at 5 on weekends.
Even as someone with Italian descent, Ill never understand why a restaurant charges premium prices for boiled noodles with stuff on top. And as far as boiled noodles with stuff on top goes, this was not the best Ive had. Ive never eaten any pasta where I said that was worth the price of an 18 pizza! The red sauces were somewhat watery too, and it took over an hour for us to get the food. I understand if they had Italian grandmothers hand making each noodle, but I highly doubt that was the case. Also, they dont tell you until youre seated that if you are a large enough group you have to order family style. The restaurant was noisy and way way too dark. Im pretty sure I missed food on my plate. Just give me good non pretentious straight forward Italian food, and spare me the artsy fartsy atmosphere please.
Always a Richmond favorite!
It wasnt salty, there was a lot of seafood, a lot of noodles, and it was like eating American-style tomato jjamppong. I was really satisfied with the food, and Im willing to visit again haha. However, there were too many people so it was hectic and it was a bit narrow. There were quite a few servers, but it took a while to process orders, calculate etc.
Like finding a jewel hidden in the city. Great food, service and atmosphere. Its like a speakeasy when you find this gem. A non descript staircase leads up to a closed door and the restaurant.
Amazing food with huge portions (seriously) in a quaint setting. I d recommend going with a group of 3+ as you are more likely to get a more private table. With only two, you will be seated within inches of the next couple in a long row in the middle of the restaurant. It s a small space, so I get it. The fried oysters were incredible, and so was the pasta. The house wine by the glass isn t bad at all. Be sure to call for reservations between 3-5pm.
Great food. Nice service and fun atmosphere.
I am utterly appalled by the audacious response I got from their hostess. I called to see if I can add an extra spot for my goddaughter (since I already had a reservation for my wife and I). Rightfully so, they said they cannot accommodate me due to the business of the evening. I understood this notion and asked if I could just come into my put name down. The hostess rudely told me they dont take walk-ins over the phone (which is obvious as I wanted to WALK-IN); she immediately tried to hang up the phone because there was a line out the door. Before, I can even get a word, she hung up. This restaurant is NOT A MICHELIN STARRED PLACE. There is no reason for such rude behavior. I would never even try to eat here, if my life depended on it.
Very tight space but TBH it makes you feel cozy like your grandmas dining table with too many family members crammed in. Food is incredible and ABUNDANT to say the least. When we stay in Richmond its our go-to dinner.
Tight waiting and hostess can be rude when you re trying to get a table, but it doesn t matter because prices are great for the quality of food which totally smacks. It s always a wait but it is also always worth it
If you can get crab spaghetti, do it. Their food is best in Richmond hands down. Do your stomach a favor and get some amazing pasta, NOW
Food is made to order so it took a while, but everything was very good. Not accessible as you walk up a very narrow set or stairs to access the restaurant. Wheelchair accessibility: Not accessible.
Overall a great experience. You can tell the staff is working really hard to accommodate as best they can. The food was great - I enjoyed the simplicity of the menu. The mushroom dish we ordered had too much garlic but I would still order it again. Martinis were delicious. Vegetarian options are minimal and basic.
It s been 10 years since coming here and probably won t be back. The wait staff was not very nice to my party and then they wanted to charge us 3 dollars a person to cut a birthday cake we brought in. Very disappointed
Everything was perfect. I definitely recommend the Carbonara.
Squid, white bean and arugula. Hanger steak. Seared tuna. Braised fennel. Wine. Tiramisu. The perfect meal, visit after visit, year after year. Spring bonus: soft shell crabs!
Hot staff, even hotter food.
Nice place, had a good meal. Had the puttanesca with spaghetti which wasn t as good as I was hoping the sauce was a bit lacking and was overly oily but I enjoyed it nonetheless. The pasta portions are huge!
If youre worried youre about to open a broom closet, youre walking into the right place! Aside from the super sketchy entrance, this place definitely lived up to its hype and more in terms of the food! Weve heard about this place for years, but I only came for the first time recently for a friends birthday dinner. Its all family style (which is refreshing). The entrees are definitely on the pricy side, but so good! Probably the best cooked tuna Ive ever had - and I was not alone in that thought! The pastas are all very generously portioned and flavorful. Theres a lot of butter (the butter pasta was honestly too rich for me), but its definitely tasty. We tried the shrimp diabolo, and one of the other pastas with crab meat, as well as two types of fish. Everything was delicious! We came for an early dinner, and there were already a number of folks. It got more crowded as dinner wore on. They definitely try to fit as much seating as possible but its still tight, so its harder to hear if youre in a large group (you can still hear next to or across from you, but not 4 or 5 people down). Would definitely recommend - and get a reservation! Its popular for a reason. Great Italian food, and filling. Great service as well. My one knock against the atmosphere is that the room is very minimally lot so its a bit of a dark dining space after the sun sets, but thats a personal preference. Vegetarian options: We had vegetarian and vegan friends at dinner who were able to enjoy themselves (though they all ate seafood). Parking: Its at the heart of downtown VCU, so parking is plentiful when students are on break, and less so when students are at school.
Yes, go through the door at the top of the stairs. Was packed early on a Tuesday evening, get a reservation. Servings are enormous.
Had a night out with the Lady, it took a second to get seated, & there wasnt anywhere to wait that wasnt in the way of the wait staff, but we were seated in a nice corner section, making it very easy to hear my girlfriend, despite it being quite bustling, we had the branzino & the napolese spaghetti with squid, scallops, mussels, etc, I am finishing the leftovers now, two days later & it is still delicious. Would give 5 stars if there was a lobby or waiting area.
Me and one of my friends was in Richmond for a few days and wanted to have Italian. Some random bartender recommended Edo. So we walked a mile over to the restaurant. Went up some creepy stairs lol and into heaven. The food was outstanding and made exactly how I tasted it in my head. Our waitress was awesome and made good food recs and the ambiance was out of a New York Italian restaurant. Oxtails 10/10 duck 10/10 paired with wine. Will always go back when in Richmond.
Antipasti is fantastic but I was very surprised by the enormous plate of dried box spaghetti I was served with my entree. Was expecting fresh pasta for the price, not a mountain of flavorless noodles from Kroger. I would have paid the same price for half the amount of pasta if it was made fresh. Otherwise it is a very nice spot with a lovely atmosphere and wonderful service.
Once you figure out how to get in there it is quite the experience! Food was amazing with very generous portions! Service was amazing. Great bar. Very crowded, people standing all around waiting for a table but that just shows you how much this hole in the wall is loved. Highly recommended.
We love love this place. The food is amazing I recommend the calamari friti. We came from DC to eat here.
Fantastic gem known by locals as a top eatery in RVA. I highly recommend the rockfish and baked cabbage!
Way over priced
Great food but too expensive
I recently had the privilege of dining at this fine establishment after a friend of mine suggested it. Make a reservation well in advance! The place is tiny with the tables crammed in, which makes for a cozy dining experience as long as you dont mind sitting so close to the other tables. With that many people in there, it gets loud!! Sometimes it was hard to hear my date, so if you are looking for a quiet atmosphere, this isnt it. Our reservation was at 915pm and by the time we were done half the tables had cleared out. This place runs like a well-oiled machine! It was fun watching everyone rotate around like they were almost dancing. Now for the food. To start, you get a little loaf of bread, nothing to write home about. Its cold, we both agreed it would be better warm. My date ordered the clams in white sauce that come on spaghetti. She liked it but said it was unexpectedly spicy. I got the carbonara with spaghetti and it was delicious. It had a very strong black pepper profile, which I liked. You can tell the ingredients are of great quality. THE PORTIONS ARE HUGE!!!! They dont warn you of that on the menu; Id say its family-sized portions that are meant to be shared. My lovely date had a gin martini which in my opinion had a little bit too much vermouth, and I had a vodka tonic which was pretty standard. Unfortunately neither one of us saved room for dessert. The leftovers we took home will be enough for another meal . All in all, it was a great dining experience, my only complaint would be the noise level, but that cant really be helped. The whole atmosphere felt electric and alive. This place is now on my Will Go Back list!
Fantastic
I dream of Edos.
Ox tail dinner is very good and large enough to share with four at the table. The braised fennel is a must order and large enough to share. The Rockfish is a very large portion and perfectly prepared. The white beans, squid and arugula salad was very good. The crab spaghetti is fantastic. The oyster stew was tasty.
I just said to my wife this is probably one of the best meals ive had in the last year.
Huge portions. Go easy. So tasty!
Loved the food and dessert!
This place is the best Italian in Richmond
Really a unique cool place to go. Food was great and a lot so go hungry!
Super tasty
Little Italian place BIG on garlic! Excellent service, great Italian wines, super pasta selection, and, no surprise, killer calamari!
Had a family style dinner with 8 people and it was fantastic. Every pasta dish was great and the lamb shanks were unbelievable. Amazing food at great prices.
My favorite restaurant in town. Hanger steak and braised fennel are a must. Get in early before the specials sell out.
When you re here you better have brought your appetite because let me tell you their dishes are delicious! This place almost prides itself on not being a pretentious restaurant in the heart of VCU country with its precarious old carpeted stairwell, bathroom that looks to have once been a broom closet, no decor except for the bottles of wine adorning it s back wall and wine served in children-sized glass cups. It s true Italian as you will get here in VA if you ask me. We took full advantage of coming in early and smorgasbord several dishes. Rockfish was beautifully cooked with a bit of a pepper spice seared on top to keep you awake. The penne perfectly al dente. Squid bean arugula had surprising flavor and texture - well worth eating. Mozzarella was nothing I had before. Like eating good chocolate, you never want to go back! Lastly v the tiramisu hit this joy ride out of the park - the balance of cream to sponge all surfing on an espresso liqueur wave that left all of us speechless and begging for more. Who knew that the such a stairway lead to food heaven!
Easily one of the best Italian restaurants in Richmond. The food is terrific. Great family style dining options. You must have the fried squid and the braised fennel.
You can t get over how adorable the venue is. Appears like a broom closet from the outside, but inside is cozy and rustic! If you can get a window table, try to swing it, the view is so nice!! The food used to be mind-blowing and is definitely not the same as pre-Covid, but it s certainly still a very good option for what s around! It s a great place to go with family (if your family is not TOO big), and the portion sizes are usually good for sharing!!!
Italian you d expect in NYC!
Was quite possibly the best pasta I ve had in Richmond in 25 years. Highly recommended.. as well as reservations. They opened at 5 and we got there 5:10 and there was two tables left.. I got the spaghetti with meat sauce and wife got the pasta carbonara
This place is way overhyped for no reason. The positives - good rockfish and squid appetizer. The negatives - the service (the waitress first accidentally gave us the appetizer the table next to us ordered and then gave us the wrong squid appetizer that she had put in wrong), the pasta (we had the broccoli raab, sausage and ricotta and it was super bland and underwhelming), the bread (stale, cold, and hard), and how crowded it is (which would be okay if the food was good). I will say they comped us the squid appetizer though, which we appreciated since we didn t get the correct appetizer until halfway through our entree course (over an hour after we sat). Parking: Street parking
Best of the best!!! The gf approves! Mixed seafood pasta was on point! So much she said we can go back to richmond solely for edos
So authentically done in all the ways. A classic in Richmond.
Extremely delicious dishes, generous sizes, and great prices considering the aforementioned qualities. I loved this place because it was unpretentious and a wonderful experience. The ambiance was also lively, friendly, enjoyable. I ducked a star because service was slow and they were distracted all the time. I get that it was busy but they just didn t click with the rest. Although, worth mentioning, we did get seated on a Friday night as walk ins. Still highly recommend going. We ordered the arugula salad, the mussels with white sauce, and squid napoletana. Also great selection of wines, we chose a bottle of 100% sangiovese, montepulciano from 2018 because why not? Price was fair for the quality.
Best Italian food in Richmond by far. We had the mussels over pasta and the Italian sausage over spaghetti and a arugula salad. It was delicious mussels were very fresh and tasty and the sausage was seasoned perfectly. Highly recommended.
This place is DC must!
Great birthday dinner! Biggest hits were the skate wing and squid. Loved that you could get a plate of sautéed ramps.
Loved every minute of this place. The staff is warm, friendly and very knowledgeable. The cocktails are superb. Loved the peasant glasses for wine service. The food is simply amazing. The ambiance is very charming. Get the tiramisu!
New York style Italian.
Amazing! The food was perfect. Beautiful restaurant, but I still felt comfortable there in a t-shirt. Great staff.
An absolutely wonderful experience! From the street, just a hole in the wall, but inside us fantastic! The food was exceptionally good (halibut cheeks, carbonara)! The staff was knowledgeable and suggested a great wine pairing. An absolute must see!
Well... perhaps its me, or maybe there are no other options.... while the portions we large, the recipes were not very inspiring. And they have jammed so many tables in the place, your chair is slammed right up and tight to the next person. I personally will not be back.
Just an all around excellent experience. Service was friendly and knowledgeable, we were sat promptly since we made a reservation, and the food was truly fantastic. I ordered the sausage with polenta and white beans and have to say its one of the best Italian means Ive ever had. Cant wait to go back!
Food good, not great. Limited drinks, crowded and loud
Great food. Our waitress was amazing. I had shrimp fra diavlo & husband had mixed seafood. I would have liked my entree to have a little more sauce & wish more bread was served when entrees arrived. The picture is a bit deceiving bc the tables are literally inches apart.
Bring your appetite because with family style serving youll get a lot of food. Not inexpensive but everything was delicious and leftovers were boxed up for us to take home. Dont be fooled by the exterior. It will be a meal to remember.
Delicious group birthday dinner! Our party was large enough to require family style service - order any apps, but we had a max entree limit (for us, 4 max entrees), any of which could be multiplied to fit the needs of the group. So! For apps, we got the braised fennel (a must!!!!!), roasted peppers with fresh mozz, duck salad, and broccoli rabe. For entrees, we got the crab spaghetti (double order), eggplant parm (double order), rockfish special, and broccolini ricotta pasta. Tiramisu and cannoli for dessert. Everything was so delicious, we couldnt stop dancing in happiness! Thank you!
First time eating there. Highly recommended and highly recommend! Particularly enjoyed the eggplant parmigiana!! Great service as well and the atmosphere was cozy! The entrance to the place is strange, but just walk up the stairs to be amazed by the food!
Crazy portions! Enough food for 3 when I ordered 1 appetizer and 1 pasta dish!
Great classic pasta dishes and big portions. A comfortable no frills atmosphere that straddles the line between fine dining and casual environment.
This place is where QUALITY & QUANTITY meet. The food here is excellent and portion sizes are meant for sharing, family style is the key word for this place. We got lucky that we were able to get a table quick as this place does fill up fast.
extremely weird phone etiquette at this place. The girl i spoke with to make a reservation was pretty rude. left a ugly taste in my mouth so canceled my reservation
I know it might look like you re walking up to a broom closet but Edo s is some of the best Italian that Richmond has to offer.
Food was great and large portions .
One of the best places in the city!
Always a pleasure. Authentic Italian in a neighborhood gem! Every dish is a treat!
Reservations are highly recommended for bigger parties. We went as a walk in, party of 2 and were seated in about 50 minutes. This place is truly out of this world. Its super small inside, but the food is worth it all.
Great food!!! Restaurant is a little cramped as it is in a small location but overall worth the wait for some delicious food. Highly recommend calling at 3pm right when reservations open if you want to book one as they fill up fast.
Our reservation was for 7:45 pm on a Friday evening. Weve been to Edos many, many times over the past many years, so we expect to have to wait for a table even with a reservation. But our wait was 45 minutes. The staff had an arrogance to their attitude that evening, so no apologies, no status updates, nothing from them. After we were seated, it took another 10 minutes to be greeted by our server. We were ready to order upon being seated, so once our server came, we gave our order. Another 45 minutes to get our food. Again, no apologies, no status, nothing. When we asked about our food we were given a shrug of the shoulder with an answer of itll be here when its ready. As much as I enjoy the food at Edos, that will be my last visit there.
Immensely enjoyed the food and cant wait to go back. Very inconspicuous place, if youre not paying attention, youll walk right by it. Even the entry is simply a staircase until you get upstairs. First impression, place is fairly small, but some of the seating is cramped. Your neighbors are so close, youll feel like theyre part of your party. Place will get loud when full. Dont expect a quiet dinner. But the food.. Amazing!! Portions arent only large enough to share, but youll have plenty for a second or third meal. Im hoping they wont have the Spaghetti and Crab next time on the menu so I can try something else, because Ill be tempted to get it again. Cant wait to make my next reservation.
Not bad. We booked the table at 7:15. But we were waiting for a long time. We asked the servers for bread several times. I understand she was busy. Rest good
Very poor experience. Server couldn t even tell us her name. Don t come here unless you want to be treated like trash. If I could leave 0 stars I would.
They need new management.
We thought we were entering a broom closest by the looks of the door, the place had no room, tables were literally 6 apart. You had to slide you butt cheeks along the next table to get in and sit. The appetizer, calamari had no dipping sauce with it, the bread was cold and no seasoning in the oil, and food was just ok. We have had much better meals and atmosphere at much cheaper prices elsewhere. The wine wasn t even in a a wine glass it was in a votive cup. Parking: Had to walk a few blocks for parking.
Excellent food. A very busy place - confirms the quality. Wheelchair accessibility: This is on second floor up a flight of stairs.
vintage atmosphere and theyve been around awhile but its crowded and the food isnt really that great
Best Italian in the city
Fantastic spot, an old restaurant vibe (in a good way), food that lives up to the hype, and the staff are friendly & helpful even though they keep busy. The squid, white bean, and arugula salad has an unbelievable amount of flavor, follow that up with the braised fennel and youll be quite happy. Plus the price is great for the size & quality of dishes.
This is for my poc s and white allies - I took my dad out to eat here for his birthday. He was really excited to try this place because he heard about how delicious the food is & how great the service is. He works in the restaurant industry and strives to find good quality restaurants that treat all of their customers equally. We were the only black people in the restaurant and our table was treated like an afterthought. We were trying to think positively (as the restaurant was very busy), but the final straw was seeing our server take her time to box the table behind us s food (took it to the back and everything) while she just dropped our to-go boxes off at the table for us to do ourselves. I enjoyed my meal, but will not be returning. We paid for quality food AND service. Just not worth the money.
Been going to Edo s forever and it is awesome!! There are fancy dishes to choose from but spaghetti with meat sauce and the house red wine is my favorite meal.
Food was GREAT, portions were huge (like, really big, it seemed like people around us were sharing things). The only thing I could say it the seating arrangements are a little tight, but it s also not a big space in there it wouldn t stop me from going back. We were a party of two on a Friday night and we didn t have a reservation and we were able to get it, but I would recommend a reservation. Wheelchair accessibility: The entrance of this place is going up a big, narrow set of stairs and then squeezing into a tiny room at the top. It doesn t seem like there are any wheelchair accommodations.
Wonderful Italian food.
Yes good place to go
The food was good but not extraordinary, and the portions were absurdly large. The wait, with reservations, was very long. The entrance was also oddly not marked, and it was extremely loud. All in all, I might go back, but its a but unexpected and better if properly prepared.
Unfortunately I have to redo my excellent review after our most recent trip to Edo s. The service has gone way downhill. Our waitress was the rudest waitress we ve encountered at a restaurant in a very long time. She was so nasty, that we actually skipped dessert and left. We did leave a decent tip(25%) despite her poor service but we don t drive 3 hours round trip to be treated like that. She treated the surrounding tables the same. The food was ok but not as on point as it s been in the past. Maybe the rude service didn t help the taste;). We will give it another go the next time we re in town but I hope a manager conveys to the staff that walking up to a table with an angry face do you know what you want and rolling your eyes when they say they need more time isn t a great approach. We had only been seated for a few minutes! It makes people feel unwelcome. That snotty hipster vibe is lame and people don t appreciate it.
Edo s doesn t miss! Amazing pasta dishes with healthy portions that you have to stop yourself from eating before it s all gone. Great date night spot that is kind of a hidden gem in the heart of everything.
We had a very rude waitress we asked to speak to the manager they replied that they all are managers. Never again Food
Pretty good , but not as good as Momma Zu Food
Our three squid dishes were exsquidsite! We really enjoyed our dinner, and service was wonderful! Food
Good portions.
We eat here every time we come to Richmond. Great food.
The pasta is amazing and very full. Highly recommend for a fun date out with friends.
The food is so good, but its often SO salty. Whenever I eat here with folks, we all feel it the next day - for example, my fingers and toes are always swollen, which only happens after eating a lot of very salty food. Its a shame because otherwise, the food is incredible. Favorites are the braised fennel, broccoletti di rapa, and the squid, white bean & arugula. We try to eat here less frequently specifically because the salt always gets us (were all in our low-mid thirties, so this isnt typical with most food...)
First time eating here. It was great on all levels. Huge portions of food. The flavor was phenomenal.
Average Italian place. Kind servers, small space.
Wow. Never a bad experience here.
This was the second time I tried Edos Squid. I wanted to make sure that I was correct in never wanting to come back here again. It worked. It is TOO crowded, and the food (in my opinion as a first-generation Italian whose parents were from Italy) was beyond mediocre. I think THEY think that if they serve you large portions, it will makeup for the poor taste of the food. Among me and my friends (both times) we sampled at least eight of the pastas. All were beyond mediocre. The food was also EXTREMELY salty, something that is SO TOTALLY NOT necessary when preparing Italian-type cuisine. Also, despite reservations, had to wait for 45 minutes to be seated AND another 30 minutes before the mediocre food arrived. Full disclosure...I did ask for left overs to be boxed NOT because I wanted them later but because I LOVE the takeout containers! So, if you are looking for great take out plastic containers and do not mind a crowded, loud place that serves beyond mediocre food, but has great take out containers, look no more! This Italian-American will NOT be returning.
My favorite Italian in Richmond, and maybe my favorite outside of Italy. If too much garlic is just enough, this is the place.
Best food in town.
Great food and cool place. Enjoyed every meal I ve ever gotten there and quantities are huge
A little loud, but the food is fabulous!
Had a very disappointing experience. 1. Service was poor: - Waitress left us mid order to go run food to another table. - Waitresses asked us if we were done and wanted boxes about two minutes after receiving our food. - Took us twenty minutes to get our check after we asked for it. 2. Food was mid at best. - Its an Italian place that sells boxed over cooked pasta. - They also dont tell you just how big the food is. 3. Atmosphere was terrible. - They shoved way too many tables in there. The pictures on their reviews are inaccurate they have at least twice as many tables in there. - It is clear they are just trying to shove as many tables in there as possible. They leave people waiting in the stairs and it is definitely a fire hazard. Overall would not go back. I think a Chilis would be a better choice.
Edos Squid has delicious Italian food. Everything I have had here is perfectly executed. Be prepared to wait in line though.
Very good Italian food. Thin veal was tender and perfectly cooked. Attentive service. Nice varied menue.
Food was good
My boyfriend and I went here for our anniversary yesterday. It was amazing! The prices are really good for the portions you receive. We totally loved it and would definitely eat here again. The entrance was a little confusing at first, restaurant is on the second floor and the sign is small.
The food is always amazing here. It s one of our go-to spots for any special occasion. This time our waitress was very impersonal, lacking attention at our table, not introducing herself, and making us wait 30+ min for a check. Granted, they were packed and it was a Friday night, but show a little personality and maybe smile at us once? We were celebrating a birthday and it seemed like she wanted us out the second we sat down.
Ssshhhh dont let anyone know!?! Best kept semi-secret in RVA!! Top five all-time best Italian meals yours truly has ever experienced!! Very small, unpretentious, second story eatery with fabulous, fresh, luscious food . The staff is on point in both efficiency and execution! Just a symphony of motion.... We ordered Rockfish and Monkfish Fra Diavolo specials, both of which were cooked to perfection (as well as the Pasta) and the heat of the Fra Diavolo, perfectly spicy without killing taste buds . And the Veal Picata, melt-n-your-mouth! Fried Squid and Chopped Liver antipasti were heavenly as was the fresh made, rustic bread with accompanying olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Can not wait to return for another round of Italian perfection!!! Make sure you have a reservation or get there before 5:00 and wait in line; well worth the effort!!!!! Take a night light or your phone to help see the wonderful plates (as well as the bill) Wheelchair accessibility: Not accessible for people with inability to navigate narrow, steep stairs.
Always the right time to go here!
Celebrated my.moms 80th Birthday at Edos. It is the only place she wanted to go. Sat at the bar , our favorite spot and the great bar tender AL made it special for my.mom and I. I appreciate so much the great service and amazing food. This is a dont miss restaurant in RVA. A favorite of ours. Not one bad or average thing comes out of that amazing kitchen. Dont miss it. The Karl pasta dish is awesome! The sausage home.ade. the pasta made on site as well. Everything is fresh! Run dont walk to Edos. Vegetarian options: Pastas, white beans , broccoletti
One of the wait staff members was very rude when we checked in for our reservation. As for the food - we got the arugula salad, the shrimp pasta with marinara, and the broccoli rabe penne. Both pastas were incredibly salty. The salad was very dry. We will not be back.
They sardine people so aggresively in this restaurant, that its just no even worth going unless you have more than 2 people, even then worth is generous at best. They charge way too much to have such uncomfortable arrangements, and bad service. Not worth going at all until something changes.
