1725 E Main St, Richmond, VA 23223, United States
Casual Japanese eatery with a sushi bar, cocktails & sake plus quirky decorations on the walls.
This place is the best!! Delicious sushi, super kind wait staff, and a fun low-key atmosphere. Get the hot night roll, you won’t regret it!
We stopped by based on the great Google reviews, and we were not disappointed. Outstanding sushi, great quality cuts of fresh seafood and a very knowledgeable sushi chef. Highly recommended!
We have been coming here for probably 5 years, but the service, food and playlist are always incredible! It’s where we bring people from out of town, it’s where we go to celebrate news - good or bad. Their happy hour drinks are a steal and the sushi is so fresh and consistently delicious. I cannot recommend this place enough!
I’ve been coming here for 7ish years. It was one of the first places I took my now husband to, and became our go to date night! When we moved out of the city, we’d still stop in for dinner or to order takeout on nights we had kickball. And it was our special treat to pick up during the pandemic. It’s definitely my favorite place in Richmond. The owner is so friendly, and makes the best sushi.
Food was delicious, staff was friendly and on point. Best sushi I had in a long time💖
The sushi here is delicious and great quality! Our server was very nice and the sushi chef was so incredibly friendly and positive. Also one of the few places I can find Uni (sea urchin roe) actually in stock. Our food took a bit of time to come out but it's a pandemic and there's a staffing shortage so that's completely understandable. The atmosphere is really nice and a bit quirky. I'm definitely going to be a regular customer here.
We came here to eat pretty late around 9 and glad they were open till 10. Only one main server and one if the Sushi chefs helped serve us. We ordered a bottle of sake - Sho Chiku Bai Nigori and that was pretty good. You got a little more of that rice taste due to it being unfiltered. We ordered quite a but- the Spicy seafood soup, Beef garlic fried rice, eel and uni Sashimi. We ordered a variety of sushi - octopus and we also got a caterpillar roll. I don't recall everything we got but it was all very good and good cuts with not too much rice. I really liked the flavor of the seafood soup. It didn't have a lot of seafood, some shrimp, fish and imitation crab meat. There was some noodles and cabbage in there too. Loved the way it tasted though. The beef garlic fried rice was also good and flavorful but I wish it had more garlic in there. Overall a great Sushi spot.
We came here for dinner. Despite there being not many other people there besides us, the food took a while to come out. The place itself looks dated and the interior is not much to look at but is sufficient. Chef had his nose out and sometimes his mouth too while wearing his mask. Though the sushi itself was actually pretty tasty. Baked one was nice and had a lot of flavor. Sashimi pieces were good as well. A decent choice for a sushi dinner in Richmond.
Victor is a great bartender! His sushi is amazing!
Great food, great prices, great service. My only complaint is that the booth seating is a little uncomfortable.
Great food and an excellent happy hour. I always tell people I go with to try the hot jujuyaki appetizer.
Tasty sushi options served by friendly folks.
Favorite sushi in town, doing a great job at safety protocols. Gotta get the hot jujuyaki appetizer!
Great food, cool, comfortable atmosphere, friendly efficient service.
Cute place, mom and pop vibes. The owners made the food. Will definitely be back
I have been coming here for years. My husband and I love to do this as a date frequently! We each order a Sumo Attack and start with the rock and roll shrimp. It s a ton of food so make sure you are hungry. The chef chooses the cuts of fish and it s never a let down (for true sushi lovers!) I think my sister even had her 21st bday party here!
One of the few restraunts to make me feel like I was back in Okinawa. Sushi chef is friendly, and can he make an authentic role!
Best Sushi anywhere
10/10. Ordered the crouching tiger roll, garlic fried rice and the curry. They knocked it out of the park, everything was so delicious.
My meal at Sumo San was amazing! First of all, I travel all over the US for work, and I have sushi almost every time I travel. Ive had Seattle Sushi, New York City Sushi, Florida Sushi, and California Sushi. Sumo San is actually one of the best sushi places Ive been to. And its no wonder as the owner is making the roles himself. I visited by myself, and he invited me to sit at the sushi bar. Im glad he did, as I got to hear about his passion for what he does. He is a food artist. I loved it. I was too busy talking to him or I would have taken pictures, as the food was a work of art. I had a rainbow roll and the crouching tiger. He recommended the latter, and it was amazing. I am from out of town, which is a bummer, or I would visit here weekly.
Great spot for a date. Good prices. My favorite is the lettuce wrapped appetizer. No one else does it like SumoSan
The food is great! Also the atmosphere with Victor is so fun! Recommended to all sushi lovers!
Victor is amazing at what he does. He makes incredible food and even better conversation. I always leave this place satisfied!
Unbelievable sushi. Service is impeccable
one of my fav sushi spots in Richmond
Best chef in town
Best sushi in the city hands down! & prior to knowing about this place I had quite a few favorites. Victors level of service is exceptional, great conversation & even better sushi. Highly recommend!
The food was good before I found the bug in it. There were also many different gnats and mosquitoes flying all around the table, all around my head and face very uncomfortable dining experience, and when I let the waitress know that my food had a bug in it, she immediately took it away, and I still paid full price for my meal
We went on our first date here back in 2018, and we keep coming back because its so delicious. They are hands-down, still the best sushi in RVA, possibly even in VA. The sashimi and sushi are always fresh, and drinks are just right. Their service is fast and friendly. We love our Sumo San nights and highly recommend!!!!
It was hot inside but the food is mouthwatering
I Love this place.. Food , Drinks, all of it Beautiful.. I wish the hours change to earlier
Whew! I wish you could give more than 5 stars to some places...and this is one of the ones at the top of my list! I have been coming here for well over a decade and it never fails to deliver top notch food, on par with what I have when I travel to Japan. Victor and his wife are hard working, people pleaser and he is a fantastic sushi chef! He works hard to get the freshest food and goes over the top to ensure you enjoy it. The crowd can be a bit excitable at times, so sometimes not a super quiet place, but ALWAYS a fun place, to enjoy a meal and a libation!
A small, nice family owned restaurant. Good food. Nice people serving. Food : 4/5
Tasty food and quick service. Very accommodating of young children.
Tonight was our first time here, we sat at the bar and everything from walking in to paying was amazing. The owner was incredibly kind so wonderful to fine this little gem
price is reasonable. server so nice. the best part is the chaf cut sushi so thick. love itttt
Fantastic food at very reasonable prices. You get a great amount of sushi, and the curry was also superb.
Exquisite
Delicious eats, good value, personal service. Really pleasant surprise
Service was great. The sushi was good, the garlic fried rice was ok tho. It didn t really taste garlicky in my opinion.
This was a rooooough place to get sushi. I went here for my 18th anniversary. I will be lucky to save my marriage after that.
best sushi downtown and best price around. you wont be disappointed
Chef was courteous with our allergies and the food was really good.
Favorite local sushi spot!! My partner and I always come here.
Delicious, beautiful food and very polite service.
The best sushi in Richmond! Such a fun place. Go see Victor and scratch that sushi itch. You wont be disappointed!
Straight up the best sushi ever, and in my opinion, the best restaurant in Richmond.
Sushi was alright. I received a fried sushi not knowing it was fried since the menu didnt Identify that.
The food was very good, but like many places they are very understaffed. Luckily we weren t in any hurry and enjoyed the wait, but be prepared for barebones service Bc the people working are running around trying to take care of everything.
Probably my favorite Restaurant in Richmond. Im here at least once a week.
It was good, but really warm inside.
best sushi place ever!!!!! super fast service and absolutely delicious sushi!!!! would definitely recommend:)
The food was absolutely delicious. The waitress was pleasant and friendly. The place was very clean. Sumo San restaurant by far is the best place to get sushi and I definitely will be back.
Sushi was so fresh! Service was excellent! I absolutely love eating here and will continue. Beat hidden gem in Richmond!
Just visiting Richmond for the weekend. It has been a long time since I ve had sushi this good!
Yummy sushi, really good service and nice staff
I had high hopes; but Sumo San s sushi is just ok. My friend and I ordered the Crouching Tiger, London, and New York rolls. The London was heavily fried and the fish was way over-cooked. The NY and Crouching Tiger rolls were decent, but somewhat bland and nothing to write home about. There are much better sushi spots in RVA. That being said, service was good and our waitress was really nice.
As always Victor and family once again out did themselves. Food was AMAZING and the friendship and atmosphere was electric. If you like sushi then go see Victor at Sumo San. YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!!!
I m not sure what kind of hibachi this is. Money literally wasted! The Yum Yum sauce was disgusting!! It left a BAD after taste in my mouth and they were very stingy with the extra sauces even after I told them I didn t mind paying $1 each! Will NOT go back!
Some of the best sushi I ve had abd Ive had sushi all over the world! Fresh & beautifully presented. The inside is cute, nice handcrafted tables, laid back vibe. Only thing missing was cool music to go with the retro vibe. Love the yakisoba-perfectly seasoned and not too oily. The waitress is great-attentive without being on top of you. Totally unpretentious vibe. Will be back!
Victor served up the best sushi Ive had in Richmond since I moved here in 2015. Great conversation too
I have been a regular here for the last decade of my life and I truly have not been to a better sushi establishment. The quality is always fresh and the owners are so kind. Definitely a go to for Richmond sushi!
Really good! Friendly service.
This place was better than expected based on its location. All of us were satisfied with our meals. I had the tofu basil and it was good. The tofu was basic but better than most places.
Best sushi in Richmond!!!
First time here and it was a nice little surprise. Im giving 4 stars because it is very dated but service was great! The staff was warm and accommodating. The sushi was fresh, light, clean and tasty. The price point was also very reasonable.
Best Sushi in Virginia, probably the US, and possibly the World!
Always a delicious meal!! The Owner is so friendly and very welcoming. Never disappoints!
Soooooo YUMMY! A true Artist!
Best sushi
Sushi is the best downtown - theyre always very nice and fast.
More fun than people should have at a sushi restaurant.
Inside dining, without many other customers. Tasty. Chat with Victor at the bar, the owner. An interesting man.
Miso soup, fail. It was room temperature and had two small pieces of tofu. Hand rolls were mostly rice. Sushi rolls were mostly rice too. Do not order their fried calamari. How is this place so bad? And the order took forever. The best part of our meal was my Kirin light beer. Take your money and sushi cravings somewhere else.
The food was so good that we went back two days later!!!!!
Loved the vibe! The staff was very friendly and my food was great. I got the sumo samari to drink, cajun cigars as an appetizer, and a london role. I thoroughly enjoyed each of those!
Fantastic atmosphere and super high quality sushi. Cant miss. Highly recommend.
Best Sushi in Richmond! Victor is an amazing host and goes above and beyond to make the experience memorable.
This sushi spot serves extremely fairly priced yet fresh, flavorful and delish sushi! I was able to get a salmon avocado roll, side salad, and miso soup all for $10! Those who enjoy sushi know that this isn t super common from restaurants that serve well made sushi, but sumo san checks all of the boxes. Definitely check this place out if you re in the Richmond area.
Top notch sushi. Do you hear me
This restaurant is really really slow. Food is just average. Only chef and one host running the restaurant at prime time. Come here only if you are not so hungry and have 2 hrs to spare at this restaurant!
Wow. The food was incredible and this people were amazing. The food was even good left over the next day. We will definitely be back.
Great food in a perfectly casual restaurant atmosphere! With Richmonds best sushi, Sumo San is frequented by locals and visitors alike. The luckiest of guests will have a chance to interact with Victor, the lively and personable owner who keeps an impeccable check on quality control. Consistently delicious and visually appealling, the menu here offers all your favorite tasty options. And the best Dragon Roll ever. Thank you Sumo San!
Amazing service, food and drinks every time!
Excellent sushi! I had the London roll and my gf had the Crouching Tiger. Excellently plated and the wait wasnt long at all! And they have Kikkoman plum wine here, which is phenomenally sweet and delicious. Conveniently located right on main street ( right across from Miyabi, which is also fantastic), its not too hard to find parking and the prices were competitive! Added to the rotation
Vincent is the man! Try the lunch special. Great sushi and teryaki.
Great food and awesome people.
Wednesday and Thursday Happy hour is a treat!
Just a friendly neighborhood sushi bar. Unpretentious.
Absolutely loved it. The quality of the fish is unbelievable and the staff is lively and welcoming. Definitely found my new favorite spot in Richmond.
If I could cut them a break I would give them a 3.5. But a few things. Price a little high for quality of sushi and amount. Need better chopsticks if youre gonna charge that. This aint no takeout joint. Service was good. Taste of food was between ok and good. Also yall need a soy sauce cup. Id go back if somebody else was paying.
I died here now I haunt it
Spicy kenoko great
Best sushi in the city! Won t disappoint!!
Vic is the best!
Absolutely prefect, we had the chicken basil, crouching tiger, hot night, and shrimp tempura. We just moved and had frequently enjoyed Level. Sumo San is a level above we couldnt be more satisfied.
Fantastic service, great food, great care.
Best sushi and service. Lettuce wraps are amazing
I ve been coming to this restaurant for years. Excellent sushi, great ingredients and timely service. Best sushi in Richmond
Staff hasn t been wearing masks, order with caution.
Got the roll combo, spider roll and hot juju and it was all amazing. When I went to pick up the owner was very nice to me and remembered me from coming in before. Would recommend to all my friends
First time having sushi. Loved it!
Always fresh. Amazing owner.
Always the best sushi!
Not alot of raw rolls
Good customer service I just wouldnt recommend the steak. Poorly cooked and not a very good cut
Sumo San is my favorite sushi restaurant in Richmond! I highly recommend!
Good price and excellent food. The sushi is amazing
Decent American style sushi. Great tea and some good sake options. The sashimi was good but I have had better. Really liked the red dragon roll. Loved the carrot and cucumber salad with a vinegar sauce salad.
Great food, friendly staff, and Victor is hilarious
Very nice restaurant, food pretty decent, customer service great. Ill be back to try more sushi and appetizers
Sumo San is a great little place in Shockoe bottom. Their sushi was great and the portion was OK. The place is not that big but can accommodate large groups. the staff was friendly and helpful. We went their at happy hour so we had a good discount. The prices are OK for the quality and the portion size. The food came out fast and we ordered sushi so I guess these are made in batches but still fresh nonetheless. Overall must try in RVA.
Good food and service
Hi nice buffet for lunch
Some of the best sushi weve had in Richmond. Weve eaten here several times. The atmosphere is nice and relaxed. This is one of our favorite spots of a date-night dinner.
Great sushi! Stumbled upon this restaurant while in Richmond. If you are ever in the area and like sushi, you have to check it out.
Good rolls and food, service was alright. Will probably go back.
Victor will make your visit worth it
Mmmmmm
Very good sushi and good vibe, the bottom isnt an ideal location.
Hands down, the freshest sushi I ve ever eaten.
Always wonderful
Food could use more flavor. Felt more like a bar than a restaurant.
The food is great but while we were there a homeless man came in and the owner/chef yelled at this man in front of everyone to get out. Im not sure what he was asking for, but it seemed so uncalled for to me. It honestly made me want to leave immediately. I doubt we will be back.
- Had the waiter Drew who was very rude and unprofessional! Wouldnt recommend anyone to come here
ALWAYS delicious. Stopped in 30 mins before close, and still the freshest sushi Ive ever experienced in the city. Great service and quick attendance to any of our needs. Again, cant reiterate enough, DELICIOUS. Beautiful plating as well. Not pictured, but also great are any of the small salads to enjoy and cleanse your palette before you dig in to rolls! VERY fairly priced as well. Sit up at the sushi bar if you can and enjoy (:
Good food for decent prices, and really excellent service. I highly reccomend the pot stickers.
Omg, some of the best sushi I have had in awhile. Also has the Japanese yellow curry chicken, goodness it was great! The service was also awesome, waitress was very friendly and attentive. Next time Im in Richmond I will definitely be paying this place another visit.
Had a very relaxing , learning experience... Will absolutely return for more !!!
Eat more sushi! And eat it at a local joint, not the grocery store.
Sake bombs!
Good sushi. The spicy salmon comes with avocado and cucumber. Miso soup has onions.
The calamari was horrible. The avacado in the sushi rolls was black! My best friend had to send her whole plate back. Not recommended!!!!!!!!!
Sushi and sashimi are consistently good quality and delicious! Service is quick and theres a good atmosphere of congeniality between the staff and regular customers. Highly recommend!
Positive experience. Food was really good. Staff even better. Definitely will be back.
Servers are so nice, friendly, polite and fast. They are not just ordinary lazy servers, they works hard. I really liked this place. Super fast service. Thank you so much
I love the atmosphere. The owner has drunk pics all over. And a huge origami display. Great saki bombs. Amazing flavor. Some of the best sushi I have ever had. The rainbow roll and veggie roll is amazing. Service was great. The location is a quick walk to downtown too.
Good sushi. Cean, inviting, cheerful. Not as much variety as Id like, perhaps, but the sushi happy hours on Wednesday and Thursday cant be beat!
If you are craving sushi, stop by Sumo San! Sumo San has the best soft shell crab in central VA hands down! The food is fresh, and arrived at our table shortly after ordering. Make sure you try their ice cream with fried bananas before you head home!
I consider myself a sushi lover. I am in search of the best place in Richmond. Unfortunately, this hasnt made the cut. It reminded more of cafeteria sushi then upscale cuisine. For the price and taste it definitely isnt worth it to me.
Love this place
The food was okay but was a step down from what Im use to. Service was good. Sushi kinda sloppily rolled.
I just love Sumo San! I eat there frequently and its always fresh.
Great food and even better service! Try the spicy kinoko and their Basil entree for a delicious appetizer and dinner.
My favorite spot for sushi in town
Sushi ga totemo oishii desu. Sugoi.
Always a great place to eat! Music is not to loud and everyone is usually having a good time. The London roll is my go to highly recommended!
Sake bombs!
The fish was fresh. Its not your typical sushi place but more of a neighborhood pub that serves sushi.
Some of the best sushi in Richmond, never disappointed
Sushi specials Thursday before 6 make this my afterword go-to! A space thats just right and a staff that keeps up in busy times while keeping the bar laughibg.
Straightforward and affordable for good sushi. If you get in for the happy hours Wednesday and Thursday its even better. The owners and staff are friendly and I am pretty sure its locally owned. Youll find it on Main St. just down from Wonderland which is great for me. Oh and they have Weihenstephaner :)
For years, Sumo San has been my second loving room. The sushi is fresh, plated beautifully and reasonably priced. Victor is the best host and always greets you with a smile!
By far my favorite and beat sushi spot in Richmond. Sit at the bar for great company and conversation
Great food great service!! Hungout with a friend and staff was amazing. The sushi is very good and they definitely care about what they are doing. It definitely shows.
Went for lunch, had the lunch chicken teriyaki which came with a small salad at $7.95. I couldnt finish it all, plenty of food and it was very good. Pleasant atmosphere and excellent service.
Place was a little noisy. Good food and ambiance. Staff was attentive.
ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE FRO. THE SERVICE TO THE FOOD!!! DO NOT GO HERE! (When someone says theyre allergic to onions and you mess up their first order, if you force them to order a second dish because you wont fix the first one, dont put more onions than rice in it!!!)
Awesome spot! Great service and delicious food. Highly recommend!
One of the best sushi places in Richmond
Some of the best sushi in town cool vibe and service
The first thing I noticed when I walked in is that this place has a lot of charm. Clocks on the wall telling time from different cities across the world and a sushi bar positioned just the way I prefer it, which is where I sat. The edamame was good....I mean, hard to mess that up. Although you would be surprised, I ve seen (tasted) it. Then had Yellowtail Sashimi, was very fresh and the chef made an outstanding sauce to dip it in. Followed that with a Spicy Tuna (added crunch) roll. Very standard roll, but was also very good. The final piece to my Sushi Fill-Up was the Crouching Tiger roll - highly recommend this one! Shrimp tempura, cucumber , avocado and tuna topped a few sweet and spicy sauces made for one delicious roll. This is the spot for sushi in Downtown Richmond!
Ok
Great sushi, great atmosphere!
