Upscale, yet casual industrial-chic seafood outfit - offering an enormous raw bar featuring its own farm-raised oysters - seasonal dishes, plus artisan cocktails, craft beers, and an incredible wine selection in airy digs.
great service. super nice bartender. lots of great drinks. the octopus is the best i’ve ever had. amazing oysters. try the chipwhich
Enjoyed this restaurant! Lily was our server and she was pleasant and attentive! We had a cosmo and a gin gimlet! Excellent! The oysters were cold and the sauces complemented it. We ordered a delicious rib eye cooked perfectly served with roasted sunchoke ! Highly recommend
World class dining. Rappahannock oysters were amazing, cold, well shucked. Scallop crudo fresh and delicious. Steak was incredible while the sunchokes and mushrooms stole the show. Bravo!
Best meal we've ever had! We were walking around after getting a massage at The Jefferson looking for a place to eat, most places were closed until 5 but Rappahannock was open at 4. The service was great, staff were welcoming and knowledgeable. Drinks were good but could use a better Rum selection, though I did find a new rum I like now because of it. First my Scallops.... We had been at the OBX for the week prior to this and the Scallops here were perfectly cooked and fresh, nothing at the beach even came close to comparing! My girlfriend ordered the Ribeye and sunchokes, absolutely the best steak either of us have had. Perfectly seasoned and the temperature was spot on. Do yourself a favor and just go!
I’d return for the paella. Generous and truly excellent. The ceviche was high quality but the panna cotta was forgettable.
Really good drinks & fresh seafood prepared to perfection. We had a dozen oysters, scallops & grits. Also ordered their Rock Fish...delicious!! Our server Ashley was absolutely the best. We will surely return.
My husband and I went here for a date night. We were so excited to come here as we we had heard good things about it. We came in as soon as the opened on a Saturday so it wasn’t very busy. That was a plus. The place itself is very nice and clean. The waitress we had was very attentive and nice. I drink a lot of water and she kept it full all of the time. Which can be hard for a lot of people. However, she was on top of it. We ordered the octopus, whole grilled fish, and the paella. The octopus was delicious. My husband and I loved it. When we got the grilled fish and the paella, we were amazed at how beautiful the presentation was. However, it was far too oily to eat. Both of the dishes were drowning in a pool of oil. Especially the paella. To people who are generally health conscious- these dishes are not for you. First thing, with the paella, the very first mussel I picked up to eat had a hair in it. Which was extremely unfortunate. I put it to the side and just counted it as fluke. I went ahead and tried the food but I could only eat the top part of the paella and the protein. It had a good taste. It was however way too oily. It was sitting in a soup of oil. The whole fish was also good. My husband felt that it too was way too oily. Those fish already have a lot of oil in them but then to have it sitting in oil for presentation and the sauce be oil based, it was very heavy. When you order fish, you typically want that light and fresh taste but this was not the case. All in all, it was not the date night we were looking to have. We just moved here from Tennessee and was looking forward to a upscale restaurant but was disappointed. Would I pay what I paid to come here again? No. It is not worth the hype.
Super fresh oysters. I love raw oysters so order them wherever they’re offered. They provided horseradish upon request because I prefer the clean taste and then might add a little lemon and horseradish. We also ordered the oysters with caviar. They were so tasty I forgot to take a picture of them. Best paella we’ve ever had, and we’ve been to Spain. We enjoyed the crispy rice in particular. Delicious and fresh whole fish. It was red snapper when we visited. It fell off the bones, and the flavor was superb. Great cocktails (Negroni and dirty martini). Excellent service. Even tho I didn’t specify outdoor seating in my reservation, they still accommodated it on such a lovely day. Host, waitress, and bartender were all fantastic. Walking distance from Dominion Energy Center (we went to a show at the theater beforehand). Definitely a repeat
Great happy hour. Get the oysters.
Super solid spot with delicious sea food and drinks!
Great spot for oysters and seafood in the heart of historic Richmond.
Good food, ate the fish, but others are other things. We all had dun
Loved our experience here!
maybe my review would be different if I had ordered something else, but ordered the kale salad and it was absolutely terrible. Kale wasnt washed sufficiently there was sand in it, the squash was flavorless and there were clumps of peppercorns here and there that were not evenly mixed in and therefore very unpleasant. The dressing was good but not enough of it. Very disappointed.
Yummerz Parking: I tried to park and immediately died, wouldnt try again. Food : 5/5 |
Great spot for downtown RVA. Also, surprisingly kid friendly. The food and the cocktails are great, highly recommend to anyone looking for great seafood Kid-friendliness: It s friendly with high chairs and an unpretentious crowd
Ive been before, and the oysters were good. The reason for the lower rating is that they charge $8 for cocktail sauce and another $8 for tarter sauce. I couldnt believe it when I saw their online menu. Canceled the reservation and went next door. However, a prompt reply explaining its the retail price to take home, encouraged me to edit my review.
Best food in the city
Used to be my go to upscale great food restaurant. Not anymore. Changed chef and menu. Was looking forward to the leather bound menu of wonderful food options and lovely, extensive wine list. Instead received a laminated front and back menu. The food was O.K. at best. The first server had a terrible attitude but fortunately left and the second server was awesome. Only a few people in the place at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. It would normally be packed. Guy sitting two tables over was loudly talking on speaker phone. Not the same place. Just another meh restaurant.
Very overpriced menu. The waiter didnt even know which beer was local vs what wasnt when its clearly stated on the menu. Food was very salty tasting. I asked for tea to drink but they dont even serve tea.
First time visiting Richmond before moving here. Glad to have chosen Rappahannock as our first date night. Oysters, Octopus, and Scallops were all awesome.
Food was delicious 9
We chose this restaurant, as it is a short walk from the Dominion Energy Center. It is essentially a bar with tables around the sides. There is plenty of room and window high tops. Our server was friendly and professional. My husband had the raw oysters and the oyster crudo. I ordered the baked scallop meal. All of our food was very good, but portion sizes are small for the cost. That is the price you pay for eating in a trendy restaurant. I gave a 4 for atmosphere, as many of the back tables are very dark and people pass by to use the bathrooms.
Very good Great oysters Good ceviche Octopus too Excellent staff Fun venue
The food was amazing, but the service wasn t what you d expect for the price. We will return to give it another chance because the food was so incredibly good.
It s normal bar food and drink style with fresh seafood choice. Drinks are priced a little high without much special creation or preparation (martini in margarita glass for example). Scallop was very good. The paella was ok (be warned it s two people portion).
Unfortunately disappointed. The service was great by our waiter. My wifes Old Fashioned was great too. Rappahannock oysters were excellent, some of the best Ive had. The ceviche was slightly salty but good. The level of smoke from the kitchen was our problem. I walked out smelling like I had just spent hours in front of a BBQ pit. I found out from the waiter there were issues with the ventilation recently. Had the smoke not been an issue I would have stayed for entrees. I will try this again but may call ahead to ensure the ventilation has been fixed.
Deserves its excellent ratings. Food was superb, as was the service. A very nice atmosphere with subtle wood smoke aroma. Fresh oysters. Grilled octopus and rockfish were perfectly cooked. Sicilian dessert was unique and delicious. Music was a bit loud and not to our taste but that was a minor mark on an otherwise excellent dinner.
Great date night place.
The food was great but the service was so so slow.
Oh dear, my oyster experience here was not a good one. Instead of sweet, juicy morsels of chewy goodness we were served dried, stringy oysters full of grit and pieces of shell. I can do better at home. This was to be a highlight of our trip and yet was a huge disappointment. Paella was okay, especially the Socarrat. Again shrimp and mussels were overcooked. Seafood chef take note.
Just stopped by for happy hour this time. Solid specials, very good cocktails.
The location is great but the food could have been much better.
Really really good with the except of the level of salt in the dishes. We tried the paella and the seared fish, both would have been a 10/10 if it wasn t for the overwhelming amount of salt with each bite. My recommendation to you would be to ask for less salt upon ordering. It would be a much more enjoyable experience. Service was excellent as it tends to be in most RVA spots
Enjoyed the meal and the waitress and staff were really helpful.
Baked oysters were out of this world. I have never had grilled octopus cooked so well. It is normally a hit or miss everywhere I ve ever been but here they absolutely nailed it. I was told the best place was in the Cayman, tried it, and was disappointed. The grilled octopus here is way better. Also had the swordfish as the fish of the day and it was also the best swordfish dish I ve ever had. Not going to lie, the caviar was just OK.
We ate here last night and it was delicious. The wood grilled octopus with that potato stack were something my palate is going to remember for a long time. The Spring salad with raddicho and labne the chef is launching this week was perfectly seasoned. The pork and pickle plate had some great surprises like pickled daikon radish slices and minced apples. Service was also great!
If you re in town for a night or two and staying downtown, you have to try Rappahannock! I was referred by a friend who used to live here. It was lively and fun (loved the music choices), the food was amazing (try the baked oysters), and the staff was attentive and friendly. I ll be back next time I m in town for work!
A perfect special date night when you want outstanding food served by knowledgeable attentive wait staff. From the cocktails to the desserts, one of our most enjoyable dinners. And this includes meals in DC, NY, London and Paris.
Clams were very small served with too tiny pieces of bread, I needed to ask for more. Swordfish main entrée was extremely small served on a very large plate making it look even smaller, my piece of swordfish was so thin. Way overpriced for the portion and quality. Will not go back
A downtown Richmond restaurant that showcases seafood. It has a limited menu, but it hits the seafood basics very well. Vegetarian options: Not a vegetarian place. Parking: A tough parking situation when it is busy. Wheelchair accessibility: Yes, but tight.
Im picky, but this place made me happy. I dont mind pricy, if the food and service warrant it. Most of the time, it does not. Here it does. Food : 5/5 |
This place is amazing, get the oysters, get the octopus. Kick back and let your taste buds grow.
We were greeted by our lovely waitperson Sage. She was charming, helpful and funny. She was the highlight of the meal unfortunately. The walnut salad was delicious but the rest of the meal was lacking flavor. The paella in particular was not seasoned well and had no salt at all which was hugely disappointing. We hoped for a reprieve with dessert, their homemade cookies and ice cream. The best of the two ice creams and cookies was the earl grey ice cream which I would have again but the cookie was flavorless as wells sigh. Thank goodness for Sage.
Great time and great food!
An absolute delight! If we lived in Richmond this place would be on our regular rotation for sure. We started with a dozen raw oysters and the shrimp cocktail. The oysters were REALLY good and prepared perfectly!! (Almost no shell chips to be found in these.) From there we had the grilled octopus. It is a beautifully balanced dish with every component adding to the overall presentation and taste of the octopus. Served alongside the octopus was a potato that was sliced thinnly and spread out like a deck of cards when sliced into. This served as a perfect way to gather some of the sauce & octopus & potato in one bite for a cornucopia of flavors. Easily one of the best dishes Ive had in recent memory. It was all so good we ordered another round of small plates. I had the chowder and it was wonderful but paled in comparison to my companions choice... The Trout Crudo. I mean... wow! First, visually its a work of art, and with as good as it looks its taste is equivalent. If you are an adventureous eater this dish is for you. We sat at the bar and the guys were fabulous. The ambiance is straightforward and classy in an understated way. Decorated for the holidays in a simple way that adds to the overall feel to the place.
Our service was phenomenal, and the oysters were the best we have ever had
Im not sure what happened to this place but its changed in such a completely disappointing way that I can no longer recommend it. The service we got tonight was horrible, but thats not even really why Im so let down. The food, which had previously been inspired and fresh is now dull, and poorly executed. A year ago, I had one of my favorite meals of 2022 here, and now, just 12 months later, one of the worst. The flavors of the scallop dish my wife ordered clashed terribly and were not pleasant. We both love Indian food, but the curry sauce they were served in was harshly flavored and did not compliment the scallops in any way. The pan seared rockfish I ordered was fine, but not interesting, nothing I would expect from a restaurant. Very plain in the end. We also got the chowder as a starter and in addition to arriving after our entrées it was, like my dish, not very well thought out. Not a flavor that makes you want to have it again. Even poor service, which oh my goodness we got tonight, can be overcome by a memorable meal, which we were looking forward to having, but this place is going in the wrong direction. I hope they can turn it around.
Awesome twists on standard dishes.
Had New Years Eve dinner here. It was wonderful even though they ran out of scallops. The pork dish I had in their place was delicious.
Great service and a couple good varieties of oysters.
Absolutely fantastic food and service. Our waitress got the sense that we were there dining prior to the Symphony, and proactively assured us she would get our orders in and food out as not to be rushed. The food itself was amazing! A great ceviche appetizer with squid ink, and then my we split both the whole Branzino and the burger. The Branzino had layers of flavor, with olives, peppers, artichokes, crunchy chickpeas, and lemon. Absolutely delicious! And the burger was like no other Ive ever had with a savory smoked flavor Ive been craving ever since! Highly recommended
Sat at the bar for quick seating, no reservation. Thoroughly enjoyed the simple decor and open kitchen. One stove killing it. The steak tartare with pickled mustard was most flavorful. We also ordered the charred beet and carrot salad, farm salad, baked oysters, and wood grilled octopus. Well executed high flavor profiles
Had a great dinner with wonderful service and recommendations. Very pleased with the suggested wine and beer.
Solo night out. Fabulous service..better than usual for Richmond. Fabulous cocktail and great food I cant wait to go back Food
I love Richmond restaurants but this one is terrible. Incredibly overpriced for terrible food and drinks. The oyster shooters were the worst I have ever had and the rest of the food is not good. Rude wait staff, returned a drink and was still charged for it (beware they will try to overcharge you, check your CC statement) Honestly surprised they are still in business. Spend your money someplace else.
Great seafood and very pleasant atmosphere. Delicious cocktails and fair priced. Definitely would recommend to friends and would be happy to return!
Wonderful food, had the pan seared Mahi. Service was terrific as usual. Definitely worth the cost.
Service good; food ok, for the price, well, underwhelming. Seafood Tower was more like a, seafood studio apartment. Char-grilled octopus: tepid and surprisingly tough (sent back); restaurant comped with the pork relish plate, which was good. Martinis a bit diminutive (charging an extra $3 for three olives, unique revenue approach yes, but really?). Scallops, YoW, perfect! ~ third visit here, probably wont be back for a while, just not enough quality in the food & drinks for the price.
If your not a seafood lover its not for you!
This was the most amazing experience of my life. The food was absolutely amazing. The service was incredible. I cant give a higher recommendation for a business.
This restaurant is amazing. Our server was perfect. She didnt hover but was always there when we needed her. The food was out of this world. Truly, the best meal my husband and I have ever had. I highly recommend the scallops and the pan seared fish (Mahi Mahi tonight.) We didnt just have an amazing dinner we had a food experience.
Good seafood for Richmond VA with courteous and prompt service! Highly recommend the oyster and pearls or the ceviche as treat to start your experience.
The food is amazing and we enjoyed our Valentine s dinner. Lily was a pleasant server behind the bar. No long wait for drinks or seating in that manner. One of our favorite spots while visiting while traveling from MD to VA for my husbands work.
Wonderful Valentines meal and experience. It was pretty full, but we didnt have to wait for seating, even though we ultimately opted to sit at the bar. The cocktails we ordered were creative, delicious, and both bourbon based. Oysters?!?! Top notch! Scallops for me, grilled Mahi for her. All GOOD! GO!!!
I had the best octopus of my life here. The flavors coming off of their wood fired grill are incredible. A must stop when youre downtown, even if its just for a few items from the raw bar.
The food is excellent
Loved that they ve had mocktails (non-alcoholic cocktails). Oysters and scallops were good
The food here is just outstanding. Try the scallops. Service is just right - excellent attention when needed and wanted. Its a little noisy for my taste and the martinis are not perfect, but I highly recommend and hope to be back soon
Old Salt oysters were the best! I usually go for cooked oysters, but decided to give them a try...then ordered more.
Amazing dinner spot ! The food was so tasty and so fresh. We took a parka to share which was delicious and full of flavor. My main dish was the duck and it was excellent, my only complaint about it would be the duck scallion pancake, which didn t not have scallions and was a little thick, but still good. Would definitely recommend!
Excellent food, decent pricing. Excellent Oysters.
Exceptional service every time Ive been in.
Our first time here. The food was outstanding! We had oysters, the beet salad, the scallop entree (which was delicious!) and the seared fish (which was also delicious!). For dessert, we had the cookies and gelato. Loved the atmosphere. The service was fantastic all around. Everyone was extremely attentive. Our server Brooke was top notch. Highly recommend. We will definitely be back next time we are in town.
Octopus was an amazing blend of flavors!
The atmosphere was nice, but the food was overly priced as well the drinks.
One the best restaurants in Richmond. Always perfect.
Its a big square bar with seafood surrounded by windows
Stopped in for happy hour. Great atmosphere! Friendly, fast service. The food taste was beautiful but over priced for the portions.
Vegetarian options: Food was not too good and expensive for the quality Food
Service was awesome, caviar could have gotten it from Walmart , food , could have made it at home .
Food was an incredible disappointment. Tried the Bahn Mi and the menu is flat-out wrong, made with pork tenderloin not pork belly, and it is served on a wheat-and-seed baguette instead of a french one. Oysters were grainy and at $2.50 each not worth getting. Very small amount of fish in the gravlox, wouldnt recommend getting that dish either. One member of our party got the steak tartar and seemed happy, so maybe go with that? Do not recommend and will not go again.
The seafood here was unbelievable. Great spot.
We arrived about 7 PM with a 1 year old in a stroller. The host was able to seat us way in the back, out of the way! Hi-chair was produced, and we dithered about ordering. We had a 2 hour drive ahead of us. With a starving baby and driver.! The service was excellent. Since we were rushed, they brought food out to us as it was ready. It seems little man likes savory foods! The burger took a while, but it was delicious. The service and kindness shown to us was so refreshing. The food was excellent. Not a huge selection, but REALLY GOOD. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND EATING HERE! Seems like a nice place to chill with friends or date. Next time I am in Richmond I will be back!
Good was delicious ..service good ..loved it
Fantastic Branzino and great cocktails.
The oysters are always great and the baked classic were superb
Food was good, not the best atmosphere.
Exceptional service, amazing food and drink. Its tough to find a place this good in my opinion
We tried to book a full restaurant buy-out for our rehearsal dinner. They responded immediately with availability and a Private Events packet, but it took WEEKS to get any further responses. I followed up several times. We ended up moving on to another restaurant. Extremely disappointing - don t bother.
This place was a nice oasis for well made drinks and creative food options. Try... everything!
Delicious inspired dishes and outstanding service. Ray really made our dining experience special!!
The cocktails were good, but the oysters were better!
Superb food. The service can be faster
Great food
My wife and I really enjoyed Rappahannock Restaurant! The food and service were exemplary! I requested with my reservation a bottle of Moscato and they had it ready and chilled to perfection. Outstanding!
This is one of the best places to get seafood. The oysters were shucked perfectly by Mark. They were some of the best tasting salts Ive ever had, and I have been eating them for over forty years. I had the seared mahi, and my wife had the scallops. We both loved the mahi and my wife loved the scallops, and even said it was the best she has had in the Richmond area. Our server, impressed us at every visit. So, please give Sage a huge pat on the back. The credit on the food preparation goes to Chase. What a wonderful presentation and mix of flavors. I will walk away tonight and share with all my friends. Thanks to Mark, Chase, and our lovely server,Sage!
The food was good as usual. The oysters were fabulous. It was kinda smoky in there from the open kitchen. It was annoying when we arrived at about 7:30 it finally cleared out after an hour . The service was poor . It took 20 m plus to get drinks after order was placed . The place was only about 25% full not crowded at all . It took another 25 m to get the first round of oysters . There were no specials offered on Thursday evening. This wouldn t be so bad but the entrees have remained the same for so long it s become rather boring. The whole fish is still Branzino and the pan sautéed fish is still Mahi-Mahi kinda boring after years of the same . The scallops were good but it took another 20 m before we ordered for the waitress to find out whether the scallops were fresh or frozen or so called diver or dry scallops. She complained about having to go to the basement to find out about the scallops. I told her to just ask the Chef but the point is that the serving staff should be able to answer these questions on the spot as the entrees never seem to change . Total bill for 2 was right at $175.00 including the exorbitant Richmond city restaurant tax . If I include the $40 cash tip the total was $215.00 for 2 people that had 2 glasses of wine , one house cocktail and one hardwood beer . That is too much for lousy service even if the oysters were very good .
Very good restaurant ambiance and flavors were spot on
Wonderful fresh oysters and tasty ceviche.
Great place to eat
Food is definitely great. Drinks are incredibly slow. Bartender failed to give us water after numerous asks. Seemed distracted on the other side of the bar.
Had a fantastic dinner there tonight, with cocktails raw oysters, grilled octopus, and a fresh tomato burrata salad. All three were excellent.
Too limited a menu. Nice atmosphere. Did tasted good. Wouldnt go back.
Great food service!
Rappahannock recently provided oysters for our cocktail hour. Paul was absolutely amazing and everyone raved about how tasty the raw bar was. He even set aside a plate of oysters for my husband and I so we didnt miss out on them! We were also gifted a bottle of hot sauce before he left for the evening. Highly recommend!
I love stopping by here for their oysters! Im a novice in the oyster game but Ive yet to go anywhere that compares. I always come and sit at the bar and the service has been awesome every time! I love that it smells like a campfire in there, it makes the place feel very cozy.
Good service, great executive chef! They accommodated a big group with appropriate notice. A very fun downtown trendy restaurant vibe. The Manhattan was delightful. And we enjoyed the aperitifs immensely.
Service was killer,
This is such a wonderful place that feels very classy and comfortable at the same time. I highly recommend it for gatherings with friends, date nights, or just a nice spot to chill. The menu is uniquely delicious in the most delightful way. Congratulations to the incredible executive chef, as well as all of the skilled servers and staff for amazing, consistent, and thoughtful service. Our server did a fantastic job taking care of our large party and I loved everything I ate and drank. I definitely plan to return!
I came here with a large group of friends and had an awesome time! The waitstaff was very patient with our group and gave us great service. The food was sooo good and everything came out in a timely manner. I know this place is mainly a seafood restaurant, but I had the burger as my entree and eating a burger in a Hawaiian roll was something I didnt know I needed in my life until that moment. I also shared two bottles of the Frenzy wine that was recommended by our server. Highly recommend if you are in the Richmond area.
Tried this restaurant for the first time over the weekend and had such a great experience! Our server was very friendly and attentive. Atmosphere was warm and cozy. Every dish we had was so flavorful and fresh. My favorites included the oysters, grilled octopus, and seared fish. Highly recommend, kudos to the chef and staff!
Well, where to start. Oysters, amazing, mignonette house made and amazing wh8ch accompanied the oysters and a cocktail sauce with a blend of old bay mixed in. I had an amazing oyster shooter with a twist, its a must have, Whiskey Sour, amazing and then, I had the whole wood grilled fish which was spectacular. I never leave a review, this is my first and I will be back to this restaurant again!!! One more thing, thr bartenders, oyster shucker and the entire staff, were amazing. GREAT JOB!
Nice place. Baked oysters where triple amazing. I usually eat fried but Ive been converted. They were amazing. Waitress was great and I will be back
Theres a reason why when our reservation for 6 fell through downtown, we were able to quickly get in here on a Saturday night. This dungeon of overpriced, God Awful food is horrible. Every one of us would have left immediately, but kept up a brave face so as to keep our size dinner party in tact How tbis dump is still in business is beyond me. All I want to do is forget that horrible experience....
Exceptional restaurant. Great food and service! From starter to deserts, everything had great taste and it looked great on the plates!
Outstanding. I usually don t enjoy oysters from warmer waters, but the Old Salte and Rappahannock ones available today are great!
Food is really good, service is kind of lackluster. Cocktail menu is VERY basic and uninventive. Definitely do not go if you have any kind of gluten intolerance or allergy - the menu is not GF friendly at all, nor do they provide any accomodations upon request. Its good for a one-time visit just to say you did, but I wont be back. Nothing to write home about.
Excellent service, food and cocktails!
If youre a local and you know this place, your experience may be different. Visiting Richmond on an overnight trip, I was looking for good food and the Uber driver recommended this place, however, I would not. There wasnt a host at the door so I wasnt able to get a table and instead sat at the bar. I sat there about 30 minutes, long enough to watch a documentary through the end, before the bartender approached me. I considered leaving, but I was starving. The bartender was about 3 feet away and catering to another couple at the bar, never greeted me or even looked my way and I was sitting at the head of the bar.... alone. After 30 minutes the bartender, Earl I believe, came over and apologized for taking so long and said he was busy.... They didnt have Stella Artois, but Earl recommended a great alternative. I ordered a half dozen of oysters and a Burger. The oysters were outstanding, the burger was not. The positives? The Hawaiian bun was toasted. The oysters were awesome , The music and atmosphere were both outstanding.
Menu is always very small. Oysters are good but the same oysters are up charged compared to other locations despite the owner being the company that grows all the oysters. Good service, tasty food, but doesn t compare to nearby options
Birthday dinner with friends.
Had a delicious meal there this weekend. Our server Emily was awesome - the food, service - all of it excellent. The thoughtful menu reflects Virginia s Best this time of year. 6 years ago I left a glowing review but somehow I think it s even better than I remembered.
Very good food, but a little too pricey for what you got. Very loud and cold atmosphere. Friendly and efficient waitress.
My team had excellent dinner at the Rappahannock last night the place is modern, the service was pleasant-plus, the drinks and food came quickly, and several appetizers we had were all yummy! See you again next time we come to Richmond!
Went to the session and ordered shrimp cocktail. Shrimp wasn t deveined or cleaned still had a huge black string of poop in it. Shrimp was also super rubbery and felt fake? Almost like plastic.
Great food and service.
We have a holiday tradition of coming here after The Nutcracker - it kicks off the holiday season for us every year. Rappahannock never disappoints. It always feels festive - not because its especially decked out (though we REALLY miss their amazing Christmas bar!), but it just has a vibe. The service is always friendly, helpful and knowledgeable from everyone we interact with, and the food and drinks are simply incredible - some of the best Richmond has to offer. Pick any item off the menu and youll find its been prepared with creativity, but also a subtlety that allows the star ingredient to shine. Dont sleep on their pickle plate or the clams - youll want to drink the broth! Cocktails are equally wonderful; the Vesper martini was the best Ive ever had.
The oysters are fresh and service is exemplary.
First time here from out of town. Appetizers were good. However, the rice in the paella was overcooked and the fish special, which was Red Snapper, had no flavor and was bland. Customer service was not the greatest either. We asked for extra napkins, took 10 minutes. Disappointed.
These oysters were the best Ive ever had. My entree and drink were equally delicious.
Best oysters Ive ever had
Great burger.. having bread for $9 is a little outrageous for what they give you!!
The food was really great and the service was good as well. Only downside is it was very loud.
I have eaten at this restaurant about 6 times but not in about 3 years. I had 4 of my favorites and tried one new dish. 1) Cheese board: Not recommended. It arrived with jam and another spreadable but no crackers or toast rounds at all. When I asked if there was bread or crackers the server offered to Put in an order for a bread plate 2) Oysters with Pearls. Not recomended. Very small oysters with no flavor whatsoever. 3) Beef Tartar (New dish for me at this restaurant) Not Not Not recommended !! I took 2 bites and pushed it away. Waitress took it and never inquired why I hadnt eaten it. Clearly not interested in my satisfaction. 4) Salty Chincoteague Oysters. Very good. 5) Cookies with Salted Carmel Gelato: Cookies were good but Gelato was too frozen and lacked the creamy texture that I love in gelato. Not recommended. When I was finished I asked for my check. The waitress asked if I was all good. I simply told her I was very disappointed. She Politely nodded and walked away. This was my go-To in Richmond in the past
Have hardly ever give a one-star review even at the worst I usually give a two or three but this was hands down one of the worst meals that Ive ever had and the service was so bad We did even finish the meal paid an walked out An for those that say we were looking for something free nope We definitely were not I paid over $200 an tip 25% An just left
Great happy hour! $3 beers, $6 old fashions and half off oysters until 6 on the bar side.
Great food. Good drinks. Awesome servers!
We made an impromptu stop here for oysters and it was excellent! We ordered both fresh oyster options, baked oysters and the oyster & pearls which was so weird but so delicious and unique. We also ordered salads and a cheese plate which was also great but should come with crackers. Our server Brooke was stellar!
So- I checked on OpenTable for availability at rappahannock.. online it states there were tables available at 8:30, 8:45, and 9:00pm. With that knowledge I headed to the restaurant for an impromptu date night with my partner. At 8:40 I arrived and was told they had no tables. So I went back online and booked a 9pm reservation. (Already a red flag but I continued in hopes of a decent meal). After we walk around for ten minutes, we came back to the restaurant to check in for our reservation. We were told we could sit at the bar while we waited for our table to be set. After 20 minutes, we realize they had forgotten about us- so my partner walks up to the host to inquire about our table. The host clearly forgot and tried to sit us at a table near the door and next to a crying baby. We asked to sit by the windows and the host obliged, only to sit us at a table with no silverware. After we decided on our order, we were informed they were out of bread and could not fulfill the items we wanted to order. After we revised our order, we received some food that was really good- and some food that seemed rushed. The paella has little to no rice- and the dessert was raw. We had to hunt down silverware on our own before being able to eat of course... We also had a hard time ordering drinks as our server was very kind but very busy. The dessert came out in a dish that was piping hot and burning my partners hand because no one told us it was hot. However the food itself was raw.. we did not eat the dessert and ordered two shots of rail whiskey and the check. We were brought two shots of makers mark. I highly doubt that is the rail liquor but at this point I just wanted to leave so I could get home. Overall I he staff tried, I guess.. but they did not care- it took multiple levels of negligence to achieve a meal this mediocre.. so now here I am at home eating tuna melts, after spending over $200 tonight- trying to forget about the time I had tonight. Trying not to feel ripped off because left rappahannock feeling unsatisfied and disappointed.
I ate here years ago and it was great. It was really disappointing now. The burger was way over cooked and sloppy. The paella was basically just cooked rice mess with some over cooked seafood. The service was great though. I would recommend staying away.
Great service and fantastic food
So far, one of only a handful of places in Richmond where I highly recommend and eat Oysters On the Half-Shell. Nuff said. During my visit, two options were available. The taste profiles were completely different (much appreciated) and I was able to split my order any way between them. The staff was courteous and welcoming. I will be returning, especially in months ending in R. Update: I visit in other months, too.
Oysters and scallops were so fresh!
Great experience going for appetizers and drinks. The raw oysters were amazing!
One of my favorite restaurants in Richmond. Excellent cuisine. Really lovely staff. I highly recommend.
Delicious and nice place
Scotch and dinner pairing!! Very nice evening...
Cozy environment/ good food
The service superb, the grilled octopus amazing. A must try
Fresh oysters and great cocktails
Excellent food everything was amazing. My wife and I really enjoyed eating here. From the appetizers to the main course everything was full of flavor no bland food at all. The beer and whine selection was pretty great as well. We came for the oysters and they were fresh. We will definitely come back for more. Vegetarian options: Yes Parking: Plenty of rental parking lots available on the same street. Wheelchair accessibility: Yes
On our way back to NC from NY we decided to spend an evening in Richmond and were told to check out Rappahannock for the oysters (not pictured). We started with the the shooters and champagne which paired really well. We followed that up with a dozen of their local oysters, and then the paella. Oysters were shucked to perfection! No grit or shell splinters and the perfect amount of brine accompanied. The Paella was abundant with shellfish and shrimp and seasoned well but the rice was just off a little. I believe because it was pre-made. Never the less I d go here and focus on the Oysters!
The paella was bad. The rice was clumped, crunchy and stuck to my teeth. Wifes meal was great. If they had asked me I would have sent the dish back and not written a review. For $35 a plate in rva you can do better imo.
Brought my cousins here while I was visiting them. Its one of their favorite restaurants. Everyone loved their food. The service was very friendly and we had an excellent visit!
Great
Wonderful my food was
Great place to eat. Good food, good service, and even better drinks. Even on a Tuesday night, this place was packed.
Love this place! The noise level was high, which made it difficult for the elderly person who had hearing aids that was with us. Still, I would go back! The baked clams were delicious, and their raw oysters do not dissappoint! Vegetarian options: There were very few vegetarian options on the menu. Kid-friendliness: I did not see a childrens menu and if your child likes basic foods it may be hard to find something on the menu for them.
Delicious food, wonderful service. Thanks for celebrating my birthday with me!
Food was amazing and the staff were accommodating and very knowledgeable of the menu
Great food, service and atmosphere!
Best food we ve had since moving here a year ago. Everything was fresh and full of flavor. Cocktails were very tasty too! Definitely a regular spot!!
On the way to a show, we had dinner at Rappahannock. The food and presentation was outstanding, as was the service. Very unique dishes, extremely flavorful, excellent beverages, and an overall great dining experience!
This was my first time eating here since the pandemic and all I can say is, WOW! The quality and service are just as grand, if not better! Brooke, our server, was so friendly, knowledgable, and patient with our questions as we sought to order the tastiest items on the menu for my birthday dinner. We ordered a 1/2 dozen baked oysters and a 1/2 dozen raw for starters. They were so fresh! You must try the Apple-Old Bay on the raw oysters...just trust me on that! I ordered the Wood-Grilled Octopus w/ fingerling potatoes, marinated red peppers, castelvetrano olives, and lemon crème fraîche. It was my first time eating octopus and it was cooked to perfection! My friend ordered the Kielbasa w/ white lima beans, cherry tomatoes, arugula, cipollini onions, muesli, and caraway beer mustard sauce. It was amazing! I chose the house-made Snickerdoodle Cookies w/ Salted Caramel and Vanilla Ice Cream for my birthday dessert and was not disappointed! Theres something about those cookies and ice cream...they tasted like a guilty pleasure, but were still very light! In a nutshell (or should I say oyster shell), we were so pleased with our dining experience that we cant wait to come back!
Food is great, service great, cocktails are great for as long as I know this place (about 8years), just table we got for birthday celebration was next to bathroom entrance
Wow. If you re looking for a fancy dinner to treat your taste buds - we enjoyed every item we ordered.
Amazing food that worked together perfectly. Good portions and super fresh. Excellent whiskey selection with the staff to guide you
Always great food and drinks
Service was very slow
Stopped in for a glass of wine and quick bite before the nutcracker. Just the ambience I was looking for.
