We were waited on by Tim, who was such a professional yet friendly host. The food was so good! The vegetables were well cooked and tasty. It was a really lovely experience and I would visit here again.

We made a reservation. I put that we were celebrating an anniversary. That was never brought up. The waitress was extremely busy but never checked on us. My husband wanted to order another drink and never had the chance. I ordered brussel sprouts instead of asparagus, she did not put that in. They were out of more than a few beers. We did not feel welcomed. It was not worth a babysitter we paid to have a night out. We will not return. Parking: Lots

Best crab dip I ve ever had!

We did a wedding dinner there for about 20 people. Service and food was spot on all night. My guests raved about the food. Parking: Validate your ticket at the restaurant.

A hidden gem! We enjoyed our seafood sitting outside. Excellent service and reasonable prices. This was not our last time at the Hard Shell!

Relaxed but upscale environment with attentive staff and excellent food. First time in and was extremely pleased.

Ordered a light drink from the bar, tasted watered down and flat immediately. Entree was bland and undercooked which affected the taste. Waitress didn t even attempt to upsell or exchange the entree for another item. Wait staff is suppose to ensure guests are satisfied and promote food items on the menu she just cleared the table and shoved the check in my face. Nice touch. Third time visiting this place and I tried to like it .I really did. It is not a good restaurant, the quality is extremely lacking. There are better restaurants that serve seafood and have more refined staffing around Richmond.

Food was delicious . 3 stars as size was very small as compared to other restaurants of same calibre Dietary restrictions: Kudos to the chef to make no salt mahi mahi and Solomon as per my mother s dietary restrictions. Mom was able to enjoy her meals without worrying about her blood pressure

I recently visited for the second time with work colleagues. The food is delicious. The service is also great. My steak was overcooked, but still delicious. The server offered to fire a new one, but I told her I was going to continue to enjoy it. The manager then came right over, apologized, and covered our dessert. Well definitely go back.

Very yummy anniversary dinner! Im still thinking about my Harvest Bowl with salmon the next night. Vegetarian options: The Harvest Bowl would have been really good without the salmon, too.

The Hard Shell is kind of what you expect for a seafood restaurant in the middle of Richmond. Nothing mind blowing, but a solid dinner choice.

An elegant and charming place, located in the Richmond downtown and close to several hotels, the menu is quite varied and whatever you order is delicious, I ordered the filet mignon with lobster tails, yumy... delicious, I highly recommend it, after eating I went out for a walk through the surrounding Street. I had such a wonderful experience dining on the outdoor patio. The server was fantastic, keeping refills and all needs met. The filet was so tender and seasoned perfectly. The lobster tail was good, but a little salty. My only complaint was the asparagus was inedible because it was so tough. It was great it had the handicap accessible ramp as well. I would definitely recommend this restaurant and look forward to returning.

Went right at open and had excellent service with Tera! The cocktail was amazing and we ordered from the raw menu. It was everything we hoped for. Cant recommend enough. Had a free minute the next day and came back for seconds, knowing Id be happy. Great work Hard Shell team!

WHAT A DELICIOUS MEAL!! The filet & lobster, shrimp & scallops were literally melt in your mouth! We had the steamed oyster combination as an appetizer... the Ruby Salts oysters were so sweet!! Thank you for the meal & the service was on point!!

Great dining experience. First, a tasty classic Old-fashioned. Then, six middle neck clams on the half shell: Main course: poached lobster tail with asparagus and roast potatoes. A nice glass of prosecco with it (tasty, dry, yeasty). My dining partner raved about the Pinot Grigio by the glass. She had the shrimp pasta. Generous large deveined shrimp in a creamy Parmigiano sauce. A hint of tarragon. Delicious. I wish the lobster tail had been slightly larger, and suggest they try to offer a true Champagne by the glass. I love the change in decor away from the hard dark wooden booths to white painted brick, cushioned seats and open airiness. Nice tables, too.

My fiancé and I came here for a date night and fell in love with it so much we decided to host our rehearsal dinner here. It was absolutely perfect! From the food, to the service to the overall ambiance, their private dining area was exactly what we were hoping for. We had about 38 people and fit comfortably in the private area. They have great menu options and everyone was pleased with what they ordered. All the staff were incredibly amazing to work with. Emails and questions were answered quickly and the room was set up perfectly. I absolutely recommend The Hard Shell for an intimate date night dinner or a larger event. 10 out of 10 all around!

Nice and bright. Comfy booth seating. Raw oysters were plump and fresh with all the accouterments. She-crab soup was velvety and tasty (all the crab is on top). Seared scallops with the dates, sage and brown butter sauce was sooooo delicious, like, I wanted to take the sauce home! The lobster rolls, though. Kind of a disappointment. At $29, they were all claw and knuckle meat, no tail at all, which was weird since there was no other lobster main dish on the menu. 4 bites and youre done and the bread was really greasy. Thus, the 4 stars. .

If you want some great seafood, check out Hardshell! Amazing white wine mussels, seafood and mixed drink selections! Their arugula salad with salmon was perfectly seasoned and the perfect lunch entree.

I am so disappointed by my experience here tonight. My family was in town celebrating my fiancé and Is engagement . We sat down ordered the calamari and a round of drinks with the already unpleasant waitress who seemed judgmental and unhappy to serve us from the start. After ordering our FIRST round, before even receiving our drinks, she made an uncomfortable comment to my family asking us what our plans are and who was driving and where we were staying. Very personal and uncalled for questions in the most premature setting. We all were left confused, feeling judged and uncomfortable. Immediately we asked for the check and if it wasn t for the pleasant and friendly GM, Bailey, I would leave 0 stars if it was possible. I love this restaurant and was so excited to introduce them to the delicious food this place has to offer and it was tainted by the service of this rude and unpleasant server. Don t know if we ll return, but wouldn t recommend to any one who is looking for a lighthearted dining experience.

We came to Richmond for business. Made a reservation. The restaurant is nice and the food was good. We had lobster roll, crabcake and lobster tail. The service was not good at all. Our waitress was not welcoming and actually a little rude. She did her job but did not seem very eager to help.

My sister took me here for my birthday we were a party of ten females we had an excellent server Michelle she didnt drop the ball at all in fact from hostess to bartender to the cooks everyone was outstanding. this was our first time here and we were very impressed especially with the food from appetizers to entrees it was worth every dime ($$$) lots of options to choose some of the things we ordered were calamari, scallops, brussel sprouts, ribs, lobster tail& crab cake, prime rib steak, fried oysters...so much food with good service definitely will come again

I enjoyed an excellent oyster lunch here. I started with a half order of the Chesapeake and Ruby Salts oyster sampler. They were sweet, salty, and delicious. Then I enjoyed a fried oyster po boy with parmesan truffle fries! The fried oysters melted in my mouth. Everything was reasonably priced and delicious.

Great service at the bar. The salty oysters were excellent and the crab cakes were good comfort food.

This place was a 10/10 experience! The seafood is very fresh and the staff were super friendly. Ask for Christian when you go! I was born and raised in RVA. Dinner was great. We got the calamari for appetizer and lobster and crab cakes for dinner. Our waiter was ok. She didnt offer us bread like she did the other tables. We had to actually ask for it. Other than that everything was nice.

Our family stumbled across this place on a day trip to Richmond to see museums. We were immediately struck by the abundant light and cleanliness of the place. The service was quick and friendly. The menu choices were wide-ranging and attractive. And the food was incredibly fresh across the board! Our waiter misheard my wifes order, and she was served a BLT instead of the turkey club she ordered. The waiter immediately provided turkey and reduced the charge on her item by 50%. We were thrilled with our experience and cant wait to return and sample more of their fresh food offerings. Did I mention how fresh everything tasted? THIS is what you want a seafood restaurant to be! Parking: The paid lot was across the street and street parking was available nearby. Kid-friendliness: There were plenty of items available for our picky 13 year old.

The lobster roll and the fried calamari was great. The salad was old and visibly going bad as it was served. Which was shocking for such an establishment but, I guess looks can be deceiving.

We had an intimate engagement party celebration at the Hardshell downtown and it was the perfect spot! You can reserve the back room for up to 40 guests. The room was elegant, the food was delicious, and the staff were kind and helpful! Would 10/10 recommend the Hardshell to anyone.

What an amazing experience from the wonderful service from Bri to the Delicious food. We had the Blackened Tuna sandwich, the she crab soup and the Angus Burger. I definitely recommend this place to anyone in the Richmond area! Enjoy

Great location! Right next to a parking garage which in Richmond, major bonus. They also validated for us so the parking was free after dining. Very welcoming staff, ambiance is very relaxing and the food was excellent. Vegetarian options: They made me a special Alfredo pasta dish upon request. They also had a couple of apps that could be made vegetarian, the brussel sprouts for example.

Shrimp Cocktail: I personally felt nothing to write home about. I was a bit confused by the cocktail sauce - it felt more tang than horseradish. I totally get it s a very straightforward appetizer, however honestly more so surprised that it just didn t match up to everything else. Seared Scallops: A must order! I expected to love bacon and scallops, I did not expect to love bacon and scallops and dates. Savory, balanced in richness, and the scallops were perfectly cooked. 6 oz Filet, with a single Crab Cake: Of course, The Hard Shell knows what it is doing with a crab cake. It was bright - even beyond the fresh lemon squeeze. I appreciated that there weren t fillers . I do wish the bottom wasn t borderline burnt, but delicious none the less. Whipped potatoes were wonderfully seasoned - for me, a bit too dense. Rosemary demi-glace was delightful, I could have had more if I m being greedy. And I have to clap it out for the show stopping filet It was unnecessary! Hands down the best restaurant-cooked (medium rare) steak I ve had; the texture was a pillow, it tasted like it had been marinating for days, and I didn t want for salt, sauce - nothing! Wildly impressed and set an incredible standard. When you feel inclined, and if you re able, tip the kitchen!

Grabbed a bite with a family member who was in town for a convention. (0.2 miles from the Omni). Parking on street wouldve been better if available- we parked in garage across street from the Omni and it was $15! Calamari was OUT OF THIS WORLD yummy! Highly recommend it. We sat at the bar to eat- very comfortable. EVERYTHING we ordered was scrumptious. Atmosphere: smaller place so they held their shift meeting at the other end of the bar area- little odd, I wouldve held on the patio as no one was out there yet. A little pricey, but its downtown Richmond.

Everything on the menu is excellent. From the appetizers to dessert. We are repeat customers. And the staff is very friendly. The atmosphere is welcoming and great for large or small parties. Look forward to our next visit.

If youre ever in Richmond VA, you must visit this restaurant. The staff is wonderful, the food is to die for. I had the surf and turf, Filet Mignon with a 5oz or 8oz lobster tail. My husband had the pasta seafood bowl. Our salads were fresh as well.

The atmosphere is really relaxed and friendly. This is a perfect spot to stop in and have a drink on the patio with some appetizers. The calamari and the lobster dip were great starters.

First time here for a birthday dinner. Id definitely return. I had the blackened mahi mahi my niece had the fish tacos. We started with the lobster dip and flour tortillas and ended with the carrot cake. Everything was delicious, the atmosphere was intimate and the service was great.

Came here for Mother s Day. Everything is perfect. I m really impressed by the tuna burger. It seasoned well and tenderness was right on the spot.

Wonderful after work spot!

Quality of the food was excellent, sauces, seasoning, etc. However, the non-food factors were the most detrimental variable to the experience. Asking for a medium steak turned into receiving borderline rare, the A/C indoors made the food cold in 5 min, I needed a steak knife and it took 10 min to receive one after the food. I ended my meal with a fork-full of hair-infused fries.

For drinks we had The Expat , The bramble , and the sea foam margarita!!!! We the ruby salt oysters the crab dip (appetizers) , surf and turf and mahi mahi dinner . Everything was so stellar , by far the best oysters from richmond to williamsburg. The Surf and Turf was so so amazing it had beautiful presentation. You need to try the Expat its beyond phenomenal. Service was stellar and so accommodating ( I had my child with me) Kid-friendliness: I know this seems discouraging because of the menu but kids honestly most of the time just eat fries and the most important thing is making parents feel like its okay to have a kid with them . From host to server the feeling of being welcome was awesome and it allows the parents to actually enjoy themselves which makes the enjoy and appreciate the meal more fully .

Took a little long for the food. Online menu and in store menu were not the same oh and no turkey products. But overall great!!!!

We Googled best restaurants in Richmond and tried to get in the Croaker Spot and the wait and line was over an hour. Back to Google and found this gem, the Hard Shell, a mile away and it didnt disappoint! The service, top-notch! The atmosphere was perfect and the food was some of the best We are die-hards for roasted Brussel Sprouts and these were the best weve ever had... wish Id snapped a picture The Scallops were amazing, and the Crab-cakes were to die for! When this place hits 3,000 reviews there will be a line outside as well! Dont wait! Back to Texas we go- San Antonio needs some seafood lessons

This is by far one of the best seafood restaurants I have been to in Richmond Va! The scallops were perfection, the lobster tail was soft succulent grilled just right to ensure that it melts in your mouth without any signs of being over cooked or rubbery !! I Also enjoyed the crab cake but the lobster was definitely the star of the show! The cook even prepared a special order of fried shrimp for the kiddos to enjoy! 10 out of 10 would highly recommend. And the best part the...the prices are very reasonable and wont break the bank! The quality of the food surpasses the price! And definitely try the Key lime pie! Thank me later!!

The only reason I gave 4 stars for food is bc I miss the big portions that restaurants used to give. Cost of food and operations probably influences portion size. Very nice restaurant.

Crab cake sandwich had a big bun with tiny crab cake with more filler than crab. What happened? Like a slider sized cake on a full sized bun. We had a lunch sized dinner. Not what I remember

Its been a long time since Ive had fresh lobster. The Hard Shell knows how to serve it up right! Drawn butter, baby red potatoes with a hint of rosemary, and corn on the cob. Delicious! I followed it up with the Chocolate Truffle Cake with Raspberry Sauce and a Laphroaig 10 single malt. I know the Laphroaig is a little bit aggressive, but I wanted its razor sharp smokeyness to offset the perfection of the rest of the meal. Im a photographer, so contrast in all things is important to me.

Poor service. No customers but still took 40 minutes for our food to come out. Seemed like it could have been a special place but staff were snobby and the waitress ran my card 4 times, got it blocked. Manager came trying to talk loud to me and argue that shed only ran it twice.... definitely dont recommend. Burnt Brussels and bland rockfish

The food is bland,not worth the price. Hell you even have to pay for bread while you wait too long for food. I ordered juice it was 98% ice and 2$ juice. I would eat at every restaurant around here before I eat there again. Also had a bug inside my daughters drink! Nasty.

Wife and I had been 3x before 12/9/23. We were celebrating our anniversary of 14yrs and had reservations but when arrived the Hostess/Manager seated us at the smallest table, seemed like a children table for 2. We eventually had to ask for a bigger table because $180 worth of food appetizers, bread and main course would not fit. My wife and I noticed the difference in SO CALL management. I asked our server had management changed in last few months...Wow the look on their face was priceless. Really sad, was our favorite place but no longer worth the money. Food still tasty!

Crab cakes and lobstertail were cooked perfectly. Creme Brulee and carrot cake made a fine dessert for me and my wife on our 31st anniversary. The service was great. Easy to park. Use parking garage across the street, they validate.

Environment is great; food is ok.

I always have a great time by at Hardshell. I had my usual the Raw Oysters and the delicious huge steamed shrimp. Besides the creep at the bar who wouldn t stop harassing me. The atmosphere was great as usual. Had to have staff walk me to my car. Thank you to the staff for helping me. I will be back but with some bear mace.

Had the Rockfish special. Unbelievable!

We attended the restaurant at approximately 3 - 4p.m. in the afternoon. We were a party of 5, there were only 2 other people there besides us. The service was great, the food tasted okay. The problem was very, very small portions on both alcohol and food. Food
