New American fare with a Southern twist is served at this choice spot with a contemporary interior.
I had the crispy rockfish and my husband had the cast iron seared duck. Both were absolutely delicious, nothing lacked flavor. Raven, our server, was excellent. I can’t wait to come back here.
Shagbark might be my favorite in Richmond. Went for the first time this past week and the Caesar and Duck were phenomenal. Drinks were extremely well made, and not boring. Can’t wait to return and try more
This place had been very hyped so my expectations were high. Sadly, I found the evening disappointing... Even though we had made reservations well in advance they seated us on a dark covered patio with heaters. When we asked to be seated inside the hostess rolled her eyes and motioned for us back to the entrance. We passed no fewer than four open tables and after a bit of a wait were told that we were very lucky and she had found a table for us. The attitude was very negative. We then waited quite a bit to order drinks followed by another wait for food ordering. The food was very nice but I didn't taste anything that really stood out from the ground... certainly not for the prices. All in all it was a nice meal and the restaurant has a nice atmosphere but I would not say that it is worthy of the praise that I have heard.
One of the best dining experiences we have had in Richmond! From the kind service, to the fun, chic atmosphere, and the decadent, mouth watering food…..we couldn’t have asked for a better birthday dinner! Do yourself a favor and order the fried green tomatoes, short ribs, and halibut. Some of the best food I have ever eaten. Every dish was exploding with flavor. Pretty sure you could order any of their dishes and be absolutely satisfied! Can’t wait to come back!
We had a lovely meal here! I'm definitely planning to return sometime. Here's a picture of the complimentary bread plate, those little rolls were soo good.
Our new favorite upscale restaurant in Richmond. Impeccable service, probably the best we've ever had. Every meal and drink was a winner. Stars of the show were our delicious bread, pork belly appetizer, and the sticky toffee pudding is something we'll be coming back for. Pork chop and strip loin (special) were great as well. Cannot stress how great the service was. I could keep going but just go and experience it yourself!
Excellent service and great food! Might have been the best pork chop I’ve had in my life. Also, highly recommend the friend green tomatoes and fried oyster apps, but you really can’t go wrong!
An amazing place with great food and an amazing selection of wine and drinks. Great atmosphere from the bar, dining room, and patio to fit the feel you are going for that evening. I also believe that they have heaters out during the colder months. I've had both the steak and pork chop when I've gone and both were amazing. I highly recommend this place.
We were there for a birthday happy hour. Excellent food & friendly, efficient staff!
Best meal I ve had in a long time
Great food and great drinks!
Food was good, service was mediocre
AMAZING
Amazing food , amazing service!
When dessert and the Bread Basket are the highlights of the meal its not going to be a great review. The Fresh Halibut special was stringy, dry and wet at the same time which are hallmarks of a frozen fish. The Pork chop was cooked to temp, but it was needlessly tough and chewy. Pork chops need to be brined or slow cooked, this was flash cooked where the outside was crusted but the inside was very tough with no rendering of fat. But if you like shredded kale your going to love this place because it comes on every plate... Will not return.
We had such a wonderful dinner at Shagbark! For 2 people we split 5 appetizers (no mains) and left ABSOLUTELY stuffed. Every dish we tried was delicious - the short rib gnocchi was particularly good and I would get it as my main next time. Chicken fried oysters were another favorite. We also enjoyed the light, but very flavorful burrata salad and ceviche. Cocktails - I ordered Margo Verde and it did not disappoint, such a fresh and flavorful drink. Lastly, the service - I can t say enough good things about how wonderful the service was. Attentive without being overbearing. We very much appreciated that each appetizer was already split into two portions so it was easy to share. We ll definitely be back and highly recommend to anyone looking for a relaxing dinner out with delicious food and drinks in a beautiful setting.
I had the caesar salad very good. The entrée was the chicken dinner .served cold and a cold plate. The server took it back to the kitchen and in a few minutes brought it back out .also cold .they asked if I wanted anything else however the rest of the party would be finished by the time another entree was brought out. Food that should be served hot should never leave the kitchen cold! Another person in the party also had cold scallops
I cannot say enough good things about this place. I went to the soft opening and it was just amazing but now the food is even better!! unique combination, southern cuisine, and New World fusion! So yummy.
The food by chef Walter is simply the best of Virginia Fare. Including the homemade bread selection that is perfectly paired with a flavored freshly made butter is incredible. The atmosphere is sophisticated and alluring, and the taste thrills are just down right exciting. A must dine, while in RVA.
My new favorite restaurant in Richmond. Treat yourself.
Gonna give it ! Best restaurant in RVA. Ive been to almost all of them. This one is unique! Creative! Well done! Great menu: beer, wine, and cocktails! Food: unbelievable! Prices: extremely fair! Ill be back again! And not soon enough! Great Restaurant! Back again. Beth Anne is great at the bar. Best Fried Green Tomatoes and again the weekly chicken fried oysters are amazing! Back again the Porkchop wow! And Taylor was a great waiter. He knows the menu and made great recommendations. I came back again. Taylor again was great. Derek the manager was awesome and as always Walter Bundy makes it all happen. Still my #1 pick in RVA! Back again and still #1. And kudos to Desiree at bar. Back again with a large group of customers. Couldnt have been treated any better! Again this is a great place! Hands down! Best in RVA! B Back again in February 2024 and this place is still the best Ive found in RVA. Top Notch!
Shagbark always offers an amazing dining experience - the food is consistently delicious/well prepared by the chef and the service is impeccable! During one of my last experiences, the server Gregory, was exceptional. He came around to check on my table at the right time but not overbearing and was very personable and attentive. The bartender by the name of Miguel is amazing...great conversation and he definitely knows his bourbons! Overall service and experience are top-notch and the beautiful decor lends to Shagbarks upscale environment and soothing ambience.
My wife and I have been to Shagbark several times. My wife s company had their office holiday party there in 2023 and I also attended. Thus, I am rating on experience. Dissatisfied and disappointed. The service was rushed and for a $250 dinner for two joined by another couple for a $250 dinner for two, I feel obligated to share the experience. The waitress came across to the two ladies in our 4 top as she was indifferent and as cold as our filets. The filet minion oscar special was not what a $46 should entree should entail. It was two thin slices of meat with no recognizable crab oscar. Using the operative word of recognizable this was not the experience I am used to recognizing at Shagbark.
I celebrated my birthday with my husband and it was sublime! Morgan provided stellar service and was absolutely lovely. It happened to be her birthday as well! All staff made the experience excellent and made me feel special. I loved every bit of it, thank you so much!
My wife and I took her family to Shagbark during the week between Christmas and New Years as part of a tour through Richmond - a city we love but theyve never spent much time in. Because we really wanted to make an awesome impression, we made reservations at great restaurants and planned fun experiences - really hoping everything would be exceptional. Shagbark may have great reviews and might be highly-recommended by some...but it was a giant black mark on the entire trip we planned for our family. While the restaurant is gorgeous and the service is attentive, the food was simply unacceptable for the prices. Dishes were under seasoned, poorly conceptualized, or just poorly executed. Almost everything after the appetizers that hit the table had something wrong with it: Rockfish: Seasoned so poorly that we had to request a salt and pepper shaker and go to town to make it palatable. Duck breast: A poor sear left unrendered fat and rubbery skin that was completely unappetizing. This shouldnt even be on the menu if the kitchen cant render the fat and get the skin crispy on the duck breast...and theyre charging $42 for it. Venison bolognese: This was an actual dumpster fire. The sauce was under seasoned to start, and then topped with a giant scoop of flavorless ricotta which just muted the flavors even more and made the consistency of the sauce unnecessarily creamy. They placed large, hamfistedly-halved confit tomatoes on top, which added nothing to the dish except the need to awkwardly slice up your own tomatoes in a vessel that clearly wasnt designed for slicing. The pearl onions were hard and raw and added nothing but an off-putting raw onion flavor. This was the dish I was most excited about based on its description, and it was a flavorless, muddled, chunky disaster - topped with a thin, burnt slice of bread for...reasons? Chicken breast: The first dish we sampled that actually had flavor - but also a strange personality disorder. The romesco sauce tasted like BBQ sauce - which would be awesome with the chicken, alone, but didnt really work with the gnocchi at all. Also, the ratio of mushrooms to gnocchi was skewed with far too many mushrooms. At least the chicken was well-seasoned and flavorful - the first protein that we received that was both cooked well and seasoned well. I was truly shocked at the food that we were served. Every dish had a mistake in execution or simply didnt taste good. The overall feeling that I got from Shagbark is that producing solid, flavorful food that people want to eat seems to have taken a backseat to creating heaping, convoluted, intricately-plated dishes that look impressive but arent cooked properly, seasoned well, or well conceptualized. Considering the prices, we could have gotten much better food at other restaurants in Richmond (a place like LOpposum) and have been much happier. The ingredients on the dish might justify the menu prices, but the flavors and quality of the preparation certainly dont...things were just meh or downright bad across the board. We left embarrassed for choosing a restaurant that was both bad AND incredibly expensive. Avoid making the same mistake and go anywhere else!
Amazing food, fantastic atmosphere! Everything thing from the drink selections to the desserts were top notch.Highly recommend.
I will say that I personally love this location, and all of their selections that they have to offer. Ive been here for birthdays, anniversaries, and a few other special occasions. The staff is some of my favorites in town, and theyre on the same level as locations such as: Bookbinders, The Tobacco Company, and The Roosevelt in terms of staff attention and quality of food. The price point is actually extremely approachable. Two apps, two entrees, and a couple drinks only ran myself and my lady about $100 on an anniversary dinner, which for the quality, it just couldnt be beat! If youre looking for Michelin Star quality food in a place right here in town, Id say this would definitely be in my top five list. Having had the chance to travel this country with almost the soul reason being food and drink, I dont feel I need to travel as much with these being the options. The only real complaint would be that it does feel a little too masculine in some places. Mounted trophies of hunted animals seems a little out of place, and the Mens restroom is covered head to floor in pictures of what I assume to be family of the restaurant out hunting, posing with their kills. This is jarring, especially when compared to the ambiance and decor of the rest of the location. Atmosphere gets bumped down a little for this, as it did take away some of my desires to continue my meal, but those were quickly abated when our staff came back to greet us at the table. Bonus: You can get a peek at the kitchen if you just walk a little down the hallway, super cool to see a staff actually at work in the BoH, and it put a huge smile on my face. Ill always go back, even with the small bump for Mens restroom decorations. 6/5 for everything else. Special notes for Servers and Bartenders, they care beyond most others youll find in town, especially for the price point.
Exceptional meal with recommendations from the staff that were on point. Great place to eat with spouse or family.
Amazing food!!! Sergio was extremely attentive! Definitely will be back! Vegetarian options: Several options Dietary restrictions: Sergio asked about dietary restrictions prior to ordering and accommodated accordingly Parking: Easy parking Wheelchair accessibility: Easy access
Where do I even begin! This place is a hidden gem and more people should be talking about it! Our waiter Tarik was so nice! And my husband was ready to lick his plate! The duck breast was spectacular. Can t wait to go again.
Been here many times. One of the best, very inviting atmosphere. Patio seating. Great service. Good food.
Absolutely phenomenal experience tonight! Celebrating my 34th and had quite a hospitable experience thanks to Sergio! Made us feel right at home and quick and extremely knowledgeable of the menu! He deserves a raise and then some! Thanks Shagbark for the amazing dinner!
Really amazing elevated southern food. Great cocktails and the raw oysters were superb! Dessert didnt disappoint and the sticky toffee pudding definitely stuck out. Pun intended.
Great food as per usual. Shagbark sour!
It s really gone downhill. The servers are rude if you don t order a bottle, the food is prepared well but low quality, and they were out of many things. On it s own any of these things wouldn t have changed my overall opinion, but put together it s clear that the vibe here has changed drastically in the past year.
Food was a little underwhelming especially for the price
Ive eaten here a few times and generally like the food and atmosphere, but find the hype is a bit overblown. The food can be a bit hit or miss the crab cakes I had were very good but the portion was not very generous for the price, my wife had chicken that was both bland and over seasoned. The bananas foster cake dessert was excellent but again a modest portion. Maybe it was an off Thursday night, and my meal was fine but I felt there were dozens of restaurants that could have delivered the dining experience better or for less.
Good little date night for sure. I loved the bread service, the cocktail I had, and both of our entrees were phenomenal. I had the seafood squid ink pasta and my girlfriend had the chicken and they were both exquisite. Service was very attentive and the ambiance was quite nice, though it can get very pricey. Unfortunately, we left on a bit of a sour note as the dessert we had was subpar. We ordered the peach cobbler (last picture) and it was NOT good. There was a blueberry ice cream on top that was rather bland and flavorless. The peaches in there were not at all ripe, which was very disappointing since we are certainly within peak peach season right now. The consistency was off as well, not at all what I ve consider a proper cobbler consistency. It was a soupy mess. We were really looking forward to this place and for the most part it did not disappoint, but what should ve been a high note and perfect ending to the meal fell so flat that I have to knock it a few points. UPDATE 2/15: went for Valentines dinner and they did an excellent job. Still not perfect but a better experience than our last. Food was excellent, service was great, and the ambiance was perfect. My only critique was with the dessert again. My girlfriend ordered the apple cobbler this time and, similar to my peach in the summer, it was a soupy bland mess. I guess we just have different ideas of what cobbler should look like. My lava cake was excellent though.
We had a lovely evening at Shagbark. The only thing better than the food was the service. They were even kind enough to host our pup outside on the patio. Our server was extremely knowledgeable in his craft. Multiple managers came over and checked on us throughout our meal. You can tell that this restaurant goes the extra mile to ensure a pleasant experience for their patrons. Dont let the stellar service overshadow the cuisine. Every course was beautifully tailored to our liking. The folks at Shagbark have won our hearts. Thank you for a wonderful evening!
My husband & I have been to Shagbark more than 10 times now and I am just now getting to writing a review. We are so lucky to live walking distance to this fantastic restaurant. Everything on the menu is absolutely divine but my husband usually gets the steak (when it s on the special) and I always opt for the Atlantic salmon. We also share the fried chicken oysters- sooo delicious. It s a treat every time we get to dine there. From the quality of the food to the attentiveness of the servers, Shagbark is undoubtedly one of our favorite restaurants. The breads with butter is also a highlight every time we dine there in addition to the sticky toffee pudding dessert. Yes the prices are on the higher side but it s worth it when it comes down to the quality of the food, ambiance and the servers. 100% recommend! Parking: Lots of free parking surrounding the restaurant
Great food and a quiet, but inviting atmosphere. The story behind the name is intriguing, as well!
Excellent food and service at and in restaurant.
First time dining there for me . Food was great so was the service will be back
Some of the best places in Richmond for high end cousine.
We are big fans! Superb cuisine. Locally sourced food and creative menu items. The service is great. Vegetarian options: Some veggie items. Very good for pescatarians. The chef will hold some integrated meat items out of selections when possible.
Great food and great service! Will be back for sure!
this is the restaurant for those who are new to Richmond! They will thank you many times! If you love, care, or enjoy the person you re with? take them to Shagbark! A business client will be impressed with your choice! You will too! I love the food, atmosphere, and service. The food is absolutely the best! So glad Shagbark is in Libbie Mill! Lastly, you will want to go back! Kid-friendliness: This is more of a fine-dining restaurant if your kids are well-behaved, they ll be just fine. Wheelchair accessibility: ADA-friendly with great parking available too
Terrific service and amazing food. Beautiful space.
The service was good. The management needs to remind the wait staff to present a clean appearance. Every time a member of the staff passed by our table their body odor was overpowering. Men should shower and use deodorant, especially when you are handling food.
Hands down the best restaurant in Richmond, and the best food I ve ever had, anywhere. We had a wonderful evening out with friends The chicken fried oysters and the scallops were melt in your mouth delicious. The wait staff was friendly and helpful and the atmosphere was wonderful. Thank you for a great evening out.
First timer Great food and service Food
Enjoyed the service and great food, nice wines and beers. The shrimp and grits was delicious. It was an anniversary dinner and no room for dessert, thats for next time
Very good dinner, and our waitress was fantastic
Had dinner with friends here and really enjoyed it. Apps and mains were great, cocktails were also nice. Great farm to table vibe. The duck was fantastic
Best dinner this year!! Nice recommendations, Talal...you rock!
Excellent food along with excellent service!
Expensive but great food. Make reservations if you plan to go.
Shagbark was on my short list of actual sit-down restaurants worth trying in Richmond. I made reservations some weeks out with a request for clarity on the difference between lounge seating and dining room seating. Inopportune timing on my end as the restaurant was closed and I could not find out the difference prior to the night we had dinner. The point of my inclusion of this part? Dress accordingly, as the dining room option does not offer any reprieve from the sweltering July heat outside via a nonexistent or nonfunctional air conditioning system inside. Even the poor service staff was fanning themselves and trying to cool off. Now for the culinary aspect: the food was what I would expect based on the price and presentation: great, well crafted and ultimately delicious. Starting with a seasonal peach and heirloom tomato salad that was perfectly balanced with its numerous components, fresh oysters that had all of the fixings you might desire, steaks tuna and bovine before finishing with the Meyer lemon crème brûlée. The NY strip was cut horizontally, which I had never seen before and was cooked to a beautiful medium rare. Succulent beef with a delectable strawberry balsamic dressing and the scalloped potatoes somehow shined through it all. The black peppercorn ahi tuna? So tender one could use their tongue to press it into their hard palate instead of traditional mastication. The plate features asparagus cooked to perfection and the best gnocchi Ive had the pleasure to eat in some time. Easily some of the best food Ive had in a while. The dessert was lightly chilled and the caramelized top was a gorgeous brown glass of confectionery goodness. Our server was keenly aware of any needs we may have had and attentively checked in with us. Kudos to them, as their ability to routinely and discreetly maintain our dining equilibrium was professional to say the least. If you like the sound of American Southern food, but truthfully are happy with delicious food served in the presence of trophy heads and a myriad of other unique decor choices do check out Shagbark. Im glad I did.
Food was exceptional again. So delicious. Service was great too. Every dish was so good as always. If you want a very nice dinner you need to go here. You get your moneys worth. Dietary restrictions: They asked if we had any dietary restrictions so Im sure they can make gluten free etc dishes. Parking: Has a parking lot next to building. Wheelchair accessibility: Yes
Ordered a Charcuterie Board..$40. I have had it before and it was good..not this time. It had Ritz crackers and pork rinds, 2 meats and nuts...no cheeses and 2 spreads......dont order!
Very disappointing experience coming here to celebrate a special occasion. Go somewhere else. The service is horrendous. We spent over an hour here and only got 1 cocktail, one app, and a dozen oysters. We had been sitting at our table for 15 mins before anyone even came to our table to give us water. The runner offered us extra bread (our server was not coming to our table) and we said yes, please, and he cleared our bread plate. We assumed as any sane person would that he would bring us a fresh plate of bread, but he brought back our dirty plate with new bread and even brought us back our dirty forks, and knives on that plate with the new bread. The dirty utensils were replaced back on top of the bread. Attached photo. WHAT? Someone finally cleared our oyster plate but no other dirty plates and ten more minutes went by with nobody coming to our table and the dirty plates remained on our table. Finally someone came and brought the peach and tomato salad, which we had so appreciated they split for us on two plates. Sadly, the peaches were not yet ripe so they were flavorless and rock hard. If you have a peach dish on the menu, it should be served with ripe ready to eat peaches. Otherwise, don t offer it. We wanted to send it back, so we waited waited waited and nobody ever came. Our server went to several other tables surrounding us but never came to us. It was so bizarre. Finally we physically got up and walked to the hostess stand and asked for the manager. The manager was very unprofessional, never apologized, never offered a resolution or attempted to help or show any customer service skills or consideration. In the end, we told him we wouldn t be paying for the oysters because he asked was there something wrong with the oysters that you aren t paying I said yes, I ate them while my previous courses dirty dishes sat there, my water glass was empty (this was my only beverage and it was gone), and I didn t have everything I wanted to eat them with. Our server never checked on us once they were dropped and we had to flag down a runner to grab horseradish for us. The manager said - so you re just walking out on your bill? I said I m not walking out, I m telling you we aren t paying due to the horrible food and service and how you ve treated us. The manager rolled his eyes, slapped the checkbook closed, and stormed off. The hostess who overheard all of this apologized to us on our way out. She was lovely. Just go somewhere else.
I always like Shagbark. A comfortable space and interesting food. A good wine list too!
The wine selections paired wonderfully with our entrées. Everything is fresh and flavorful
My boyfriend and I have been to various higher price point restaurants in Richmond. This was by far the most disappointing. I ordered a special of scallops and they were cooked so much that my sister said they looked like meatballs . For the price, the quality needs to be better. Or the prices need to not be so high end. Although I will say, I enjoyed the creme brûlée and the sourdough bread (not so excited about the other two bread options personally).
We came here for a group dinner. Food was definitely out of my normal comfort zone but was SO good. I had the Heirloom Tomato and Peach Salad, Grilled and Butter Basted Chicken Breast, and the Chocolate Croissant Bread Pudding for dessert.
Great service, excellent food!
Was my first time dining at Shagbark. Love the design and the menu was killer. Our server, Virginia, was very knowledgeable and attentive to our table. I had the duck which was cooked perfectly and my partner had the pork chop ( also perfect.) I will definitely be coming back
I enjoyed the food (the Pork dish), the ambiance and the summer old fashion cocktail. I forgot the name of the bartender who served me ( Miguel? I think), he was super cool. Definitely will be dining there again when in town.
My experience at Shagbark Restaurant was mostly positive. The chefs creativity was evident, although at times it felt like they were trying a bit too hard to impress. So every meal I had one bite would be insanely good and the next bite would ruin the taste. Despite this, the dishes were innovative and showcased a unique blend of flavors. I had the flank steak, and the cantaloupe salad. The ambiance was delightful, creating a cozy atmosphere for a pleasant dining experience. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable, enhancing the overall enjoyment of the evening.
First time coming to Shagbark and loved everything about it. The ambiance was spectacular. The food was just as amazing, especially the cornbread. We ordered the pork belly and a few other appetizers. Miguel was world class behind the bar with perfect recommendations. Will definitely be going back.
Good food. Great atmosphere and service!
Outstanding culinary experience. The four of us ordered different entrees and shared. The wine list is extensive. Unless a sommelier is available, look to the specials and the wine recommendations. Chef isnt going to publish a menu with a bad wine. Each dish, from appetizers to desert, was excellent. Servings were ample and the deserts so good there was be room for some. Our server was knowledgeable, efficient and friendly. We were not rushed at all. Pricey but worth it.
My friend and I had our 50th birthday dinner here. It was absolutely wonderful and the staff did an excellent job!! They really made the day special!
This is more than just dinner out, its an experience. From beginning to end, it was superb. The waitress was helpful and attentive. The food is some of the best Ive tasted and the portions are plenty. It is pricey, but for a special occasion its a great choice. Looking forward to dining there again.
We had chicken breast and it was a disaster Super salty and the whole dish was bad We also ordered drinks from the menu it took 40 minutes to bring the drinks and the waitress has an attitude Never go back there again
Parmesan and garlic crusted flounder was amazing!
Another great meal in the farm to table style we have come to expect. The menu offers fresh, complex, yet somehow comfortable dishes throughout. The molasses cheesecake special was a brilliant combination of textures. With rocky chocolate, earthy crust, spongy cake and toped with tapioca pearls it demonstrated exactly why Shagbark is a sure thing.
Upscale dining establishment with attentive service and unique entrees on rotation seasonally. Highly recommend for special occasions.
Food and service was great, Tariq our server was awesome
Amazing food and the service is wonderful. I cannot wait to go back again.
Great food and service!
Great service with a novel and inventive menu, brilliantly executed. Even better after covid!
Always a great experience, love the food, crazy good cocktail and wine menu.
Shagbark never disappoints. Service is attentive and professional yet never pushy. The decor is understated and elegant (plates are handmade by a local artisan for example) and the food is creative and delicious with lots of local sources. NYC quality with relaxing Virginia graciousness.
Excellent service and lovely atmosphere and decor. Loved the selection of bread plate. We ordered a couple of dishes and shared with the table. The duck breast was amazing and perfectly cooked. We loved the baked oysters. The hanger steak was decent. Loved their selection of desserts and we decided to get the toffee pudding cake. Would come back again and again
3rd time going and it s been amazing food and service everytime
Excellent food, attentive service, ambiance fitting one of the best restaurants in Richmond.
Expensive.. but definitely on par with fine dining
Delicious food in a lovely atmosphere.
WOW!!!!! What a great meal, service delightful and appropriate levels of noise. We split shrimp and grits, second best I have ever had(old pink house Savannah best) ,fois was best in Richmond so far(lOppossim 3,Juleps 2, not even close to AN. Seafood pasta was delicious and delightful. Definitely worth the revisit! 4-9-22 service excellent! drinks good. Short ribs tasty but two misses. lacked salt-seasoning. if you put a high quality meal out make the pasta. The details were missing. Crab cakes good, but came out cold. related well ramp polenta and sides excellent!
Great food and service
Wonderful experience! Attended a birthday dinner with a paired tasting menu. I highly recommend this experience. Each of the wines and dishes paired very well together. Food was amazing! Friendly staff!
Had a wonderful evening with wonderful new friends and colleagues. The staff here is great and effortlessly moves in and out, serving like dancers. A beautifully run restaurant is really fun to observe. The food was splendid. I had the short rib with egg noodles and veggies. Delicious and incredibly tender. Excited about moving to the area....Shagbark will be a favorite....well be back.
Good food, service and surroundings Not a large selection
Excellent on all fronts!
Great service! Great food! Healthy options! 5 stars!
Best restaurant we have been to in RVA. Excellent service and excellent food. High quality!
Such an amazing experience! Such friendly and exceptional service and delicious food and drinks! Extensive wine list. We got the pork belly special, bolognese special, and the duck. Everything was incredibly tasty. Drinks included the shagbark sour, shagbark smash, and the by the glass cab. The smash was ok, but the sour was very good. Well definitely be back! Thank you for a great evening. Dietary restrictions: Gluten free options are marked on menu.
We dined there Saturday night and must say I am not impressed. The food was good however incredibly overpriced and lacking substance. The entrees were served on the same plates that appetizers were so decidedly miniscule. Appetizers were in a casual restaurants entree price range so costs are prohibitive. The Fried Green Tomatoes could have been delicious but were heavily breaded and again petit in portion size, only two slices of tomatoes for $17 ? Our server was top notch and did a great job handling our table of 6. I wasnt pleased with a 20% tip added automatically to our group. This standard used to be applied for groups of 8 or more and not for groups of 6. The restaurant itself is a terrific space, yet the many pictures of hunted game, etc adorning the walls of the mens room were over kill and in poor taste. There were three appetizers specials that evening and one dinner special being Pasta with Bolognese sauce......I was underwhelmed as a result and again, very over priced
First time visit. Great staff and food. A special occasion must!
Our dinner was perfect & the service was impeccable! Most of us got the specials, which were creative and well executed, but our daughter got the hanger steak and said it was the best she has ever had. We had a hard time deciding which dessert so we each got something and shared. The sticky pudding was my favorite of all! The ambiance was beautiful & comfortable. We highly recommend Shagbark!
Good fish dishes; good service.
Great place for a dinner out with that special someone. The atmosphere was amazing and the service was excellent. The food was delicious.
The best part about this place was the service and bread. It felt as though the restaurant heavily relied on perceived value - good service, nice appearance, pretty plating, etc. However, if it werent for the bread and wine being delicious I wouldve thought I had COVID, due to a lack of flavor. Maybe I had a bad visit, but it really felt like a run of the mill upper-middle class suburban restaurant. Knowing how many places Richmond has to offer, Id prioritize other places first.
Great spot with fresh food, interesting flavor combinations that did not disappoint! My taste buds were satisfied but there is always room for improvement. My wine glass sat empty for a bit before we were gifted some champagne that was crisp and refreshing. The staff were as friendly and refreshing as the atmosphere. 7 out of 9!
I had heard great things about this restaurant and was anxious to give it a try. Unfortunately, we felt it missed the mark. We ordered the mussels as an appetizer and the broth lacked flavor and richness. And the saltiness of our entrees (I ordered the hanger steak and my husband ordered the pork chops) left us unable to finish our dinner. Not sure if the chef has a tasting crew to check out the flavor and saltiness level but if not, we suggest they do so.
Expensive but worth it. Locally owned and operated by a St. Christopher s alum. Always fresh seafood and a great drink selection. I haven t had any of their meat based entrees as they are very pricey, but I m sure they are good too.
The server Sergio isn t professional ,pushy to place order ,offered to cut the cake but they charge for it ,peaces wasn t cut equally and definitely they took from it ,not a big a deal. A smiley face from Servers and manager of the place is much needed and better then the ignorance ,overcharge that you see at that place . Food was ok ,steak was burned but they replaced it after a mentioned it . They shouldn t include the gratitude ,if services is good ,customers will be more generous , waiters don t care much since it s included . All other restaurante stopped including since pandemic is over .
Attention, food and wine was amazing. Very good cocktails. We got some gazpacho that was spectacular as well.
Quality establishment. Great attention to detail beginning with the service and excellent food. The environment is relaxed but in a good way. 10/10.
I had the chicken breast which was moist and flavorful. Others in my party had the duck, steak and pork chops which they said were delicious.
Walked in with five people at 5:17pm. Restaurant has 15 people total in it. We cannot accommodate you. My wife says we ll be fast. We re just dropping our son at VCU. Host offers our fam of five to sit at the bar. Huh? We book 2 months out . She says. How is this relevant info in an empty restaurant? Just say were so special we don t let people eat here. 15 people in what looks like 200 seats at a restaurant. So you can cook for us at the bar, But we can t sit at a table? Baffling. I don t understand why restaurants do this nonsense. Feed the people. Take the money. We are at CRAFTED next door. We sat immediately. Gave order immediately. Smh.
Creative menu choices that you wont find at every other restaurant. Soft shell crab appetizer special was very tasty and could have been a meal in itself. The entree portions were on the small side, very happy we each got an appetizer and a main. The highlight of the meal was dessert - toffee bread pudding. Great list of after dinner digestifs as well. Parking: Lots of free parking in a large lot behind the restaurant.
Excellent options and great modifications of traditional menu.
Very good food and a good menu. The wait staff was excellent. I would definitely recommend this restaurant.
Great food and atmosphere. Certainly one of yhe best restaurants in Richmond! Outdoor seating option. Parking: Free, ample parking. Wheelchair accessibility: Easily accessible.
Good food. Unique dishes and flavor combinations that worked well. Indoor dining room was nice. Quality service.
One of my fav spots..Emily and Hernado are the best!
We loved Shagbark from the get go; the casual but elegant atmosphere puts you at ease immediately; low but abundant lighting, art and staghorn chandeliers are some of the reasons. As soon as we sat down, our server Trevon came over in white shirt and white waist apron cover. His smile and demeanor set us up for a wonderful evening and meal. Before dinner drinks, wine were excellent. My husband started with raw oysters and they were excellent and a good size too. The bread plate that comes had a nice selection, including a fancy cornbread. Trevon told us about all selections we were thinking about. Main course was Crab cakes, which my husband declared were the best hed ever had. For a Virginian thats saying something. My starter was fried oysters, fresh fried with a light wonderfully tasting coating. The Chicken Breast came next; divine. Dessert was a shared creme brulee, followed by coffee. A meal for the books. Yes it was expensive, but so good we plan to return. Were so glad we decided to give Shagbark a try, leading up to my husbands 80th birthday.
Once again an out of this world meal. Sitting outside, watching the sunset and celebrating my birthday with a bottle of Sancerre. I had the exquisitely prepared seared duck breast and hubby had the seared Salmon.over which he almost sooner. NOT being a big fish eater hes been on a mission to to try more seafood to see if he likes.it. Mission accomplished! ( picture is of the salmon; I was too intent on eating to get a pic of mine)
Attended a private dinner for a 90 year old friend. Service, atmosphere and ambiance exceeded most dining experiences I have been fortunate to have. Visually, this establishment is dynamite. The food and service (Virginia, our server, especially!) were excellent.
Update November 2022: Shagbark is my favorite testaraunt and I don t even live in RVA but NJ. Their attention to detail is unmatched without being pretentious or expensive. Warmed bread with lovely flavoring like rosemary garlic knots and jalapeño corn bread with whipped salted honey butter. These flavors are background and complimentary rather than intense and forward. Their house made sour mix is to die for with egg whites for a fabulous Jameson sour for only $10. Entrees are similarly flavored without being forward, a blueberry glaze to add a background sweetness and fruity depth rather than taking a bit out of a blueberry syrup. Every detail is so precise and lovely. I love Shagbark , add a location in NJ! March 2022: Lovely evening with my new elixir whiskey sour. Staff very accommodating shifting the mushroom toast and fried green tomato to be vegetarian. Their cocktail sauce is out of this world, made with a tomato jam rather than a Heinz /Hunts ketchup. We were spreading it on crackers. Oysters were fresh and perfectly shucked. Capped off the evening with the sticky toffee pudding delightful.
It s been a few years since we have been to Shagbark and we forgot just how wonderful it is. The ambiance is lovely, the staff is friendly, and there is a nice selection of menu items. The mussels, acorn squash, and fried green tomatoes were all excellent appetizers and the steak and crab cake main courses were also very good. Great RVA dinner choice.
A place you have to go! Great service no excellent service. The food is so flavorful
I won a silent auction for a gift card that Shangbark donated to the JHW Oyster Roast. They honored the card even though it had already expired. I took Sasha their for her birthday and sat on their heated patio. Everything was fantastic, including this amazing charcuterie board. The patio seating was great and a little more relaxed than inside. We had a great night!!
This was my second time eating here. Great service and good food.
Perfect place to celebrate a special event! Excellent service and delicious food.
Amazing restaurant!
Food and service were absolutely amazing. Would not have changed a thing.
Slim menu selection and very pricey for portion size. Food was really good though.
Great starters, cocktails, and entrees. I really enjoyed the Shagbark Sour cocktail. The pork belly starter and the fried green tomatoes starters were superb. The honey glazed chicken entree was good as well. The ambiance and decor are very posh and cool. Had a great time.
Another excellent dining experience. Food was cooked to perfection, service was exceptional.
I order mussels just about everywhere I go. The mussels at Shagbark are virtually unparalleled. Absolutely delicious. The fried green tomatoes were also surprisingly flavorful, and not too much batter. The homemade bread options were just excellent. The duck was very well executed, but the absolute winner was the pork chop. Just incredible, and with the squash quiche as a side, could not be beat. Service was also exceptional. The decor is fun, and the place settings are unique and interesting. We will definitely return. Highly recommend.
Food was great and so was the service :)
Everything we had we really enjoyed here, the oyster appetizer was nice, the cocktails were wonderful, especially the strawberry whiskey sour I got the duck breast with wild rice, it was dreamy, Im not able to eat beef because Im allergic to it and this came very close to what I remember eating in a great steak. Excellent experience overall.
I had an exceptional experience on my birthday. Taylor was one of the friendliest and most attentive wait staff that I ve had the pleasure of meeting! Escargot toast was divine, as was the crab cake entree. We had reservations, which I would recommend, as the location is popular. A great upscale take on the farm-to-table movement. We will most certainly return!
Best cod ever
Great service. Food was nice. Best treat: fried green tomatoes and cantaloupe salad for apps.
Had a wonderful meal with my wife. I had the pork chop and my wife had the salmon. Good selection of drinks and professional staff. Overall very pleasant dining experience.
Great food, great date night, outdoor seating guaranteed by reservation system allowing you to select type of table. Server and team were attentive and personable. Probably not great for kids, but an awesome escape from kids. A few interesting cocktails, but a huge wine selection.
Awesome food. Very fancy and VERY rich
Outstanding food, but pricey
Amazing! Well worth the visit.
The best salmon dish I have ever had. The presentation was almost as amazing as the flavor. The sear on the fish coupled with the fresh dill and capers is a fond memory.
We were here last weekend on my birthday. Great service, very good food, and good atmosphere/environment!!
Excellent service!! De-licious good. Fun and charming atmosphere. Business casual. Friendly staff. Highly recommend this restaurant!!!
Food was excellent. Fast and efficient service. Had a great time. Great food
We had our rehearsal dinner here and have also been to dinner here and they did a great job with both. Such friendly and welcoming staff, superb food, and great atmosphere. Great for a private event or a dinner out. Their desserts are a must.
Fine dining that served up a awesome pork chop and salmon dinner.
WOWEEZOWEE! What a truly amazing dining experience. I told my partner Donald that it was the finest of dining without the white table clothes. What makes it that way? First, ( bot not in order of importance) is the well thought out ambiance. Farm to table with a very personal touch of the executive chef, formerly of Le Maire. Secondly, the entire wait staff, with Morgan leading the parade. Always moving; always passing by to see if you need anything; always providing you with the information you need about wine, appetizers, or entrée. We began with the mussels and the oysters. Both memorable but the mussels especially because of their size. Donald had never encountered the Prince Edward Island variety and he will never forget them. The barkeep crafted us a favorite of ours a French gimlet, vodka, elderflower, and lime juice. Perfectly balanced. Donald had the short ribs; I had the pork chop. The ribs melted in your mouth, the chop was so thick and yet juicy that I couldnt finish the whole of it. Both entrees paired with seasonal sides. It was our anniversary so Morgan the Magnificent conspired to offer us their scrumptious crab dip with bread tips. However, I must confess that there is a truly EVIL genius lurking in the wings to watch your downfall with the toffee triple death. An amazing concoction of ice cream a small cake drizzled with nuts and toffee topping. In honor of our anniversary we were gifted by the sommelier with glasses of a sparkling French rose. The perfect storm of ambiance, service, and food has totally enthralled us. A return is definitely in the future.
Nice atmosphere. Went there because they had ratings of the best sticky toffee pudding in Richmond...we were extremely disappointed. Overly sweet, dense and gooey mess! Fried green tomatoes ,pork belly, and endive salad were tasty but, my entree of duck breast was disappointing. The fat (which is the best part) was not rendered enough therefore the meat appeared soggy. Everything tasted pretty good but every dish was just a tad too salty. The wine selection was vast but the inventory selection was poor. We sampled several yet we ended up settling on one that was subpar because it was the best of the worst. The portion sizes were pretty sizable which is the main reason why Im giving them a 3 rating. I might return one day perhaps...but, probably not.
Yes, yes, yes. Atmosphere is beautiful, slightly rustic. Waitstaff is on their A game, knowledge and pleasant. The food is melt in your mouth tasty(Try the steak). Drinks came out quickly and were delicious. I believe the menu changes weekly so dont expect it to match the pictures.
Food was very tasty. Portions are not huge but just enough to be right. I would recommend this place.
Great food, awesome service and a relaxing atmosphere.
Best meal Ive had in a long time.
Consistently great food. The salmon & sweet potato ravioli are amazing. A great over-all experience. Look forward to coming back!
5 star service and ambience. 4 star food.
Amazing service and excellent food!
Excellent food, service, ambience, and overall experience. (Mostly)Virginia sourced cuisine makes you proud of the state we live in.
