Thandi in Saint John

My meal tasted over cooked and slimey. I asked for a replacement and was denied by the owner and charged for the a dish I didn t take 2 bites out of. I told the waiter within 3 minutes of receiving the food that everything had been overdone and it was inedible. Customer service is terrible and the older lady (the owner I m assuming) was quite rude to me as I was being very understanding to their policies.

I had a great experience here, their food is spectacular. My time tasting an Indian food which I really love

Great food, great service and we are regular customer of restaurant and I always tip to the server but this time for some reason it went out of my sight and by mistake forgot to tip! My apologies. After that, waiter came to me and asked for the tip personally and he was saying otherwise I need to pay to kitchen! What type of concept id this! I am more concerned about waiters now do waiters have to pay behalf of customers who do not tip them! Is this fact or lie?! Fyi at last I gave tip to server. But worried about all the servers work at this restaurant!

When it comes to Saint John and eating out Thandis is my preferred choice. A friend recommended it about a decade ago and Im still grateful to him to this day.

Came on Vacation to StJohns and came with high hopes for eating at Thandi.. totally disappointed with the food ordered chicken biryani and lassi...biryani I couldnt able to complete it and the taste was really bad and price trust me I will never ever come here or recommend to anyone I dined at Indian restaurant almost in 4 Provience but this one disappointed like anything..

Just have good things to say about this place.... Food was excellent, top drinks menu and great service. Definitely would recommend stopping by for some good grub....

Great food, very nice atmosphere and excellent service. We had chicken tikka masala and butter chicken all good size dishes. Prices are reasonable and according to the value you get. It was our first time here with the family and we all were pleasantly surprised. One of Saint Johns best. Well be back no doubt about it.

Ive never had a bad meal at Thandis, and still technically didnt last night either as the meal was flavorful and still very good tasting, my only gripe with my meal was that it was lamb vindaloo, and while yes it tasted great, it really lacked proper vindaloo spice. But otherwise very tasty overall.

Weve visited many Indian restaurants around the world Thandi is definitely amongst one of the best. The restaurant is in a beautiful building and has a great menu. The dishes we ordered were very tasty and excellent value for money. Well worth a visit.

This is my favorite restaurant in the city. Food, drinks and especially service is excellent. Has a very diverse menu to suit everyone

Great spot... could be just me but I found the two dishes I tried tasted the same. Delicious...but I honestly could not tell the difference between the lamb curry and the butter chicken. Same flavor profile I suppose. Servers were great and the atmosphere is very nice.

As the website says east meets west- it s not really your authentic Indian restaurant. Portion size is huge so go for sharing options. They don t offer tandoori naan or parathas but substitute with pita bread. All curries come with rice and bread. Aloo samosa chaat was refreshing . The red color of chutney seems to be overdone. Don t expect any Indian desserts here. But you will fall in love with the cheese cakes!!! (Made in house by the owner herself) The masala curry was a bit sweet. Lot of locals as diners and that might say that it caters to that palate. Darrell who was our server was fantastic!! First time trying Thandi, their google reviews are great. I ordered the rogon Josh, there was a huge amount of quality lamb pieces and it was cooked perfectly, unfortunately the sauce was very salty and I couldn t taste any other flavours. My son had the biryani which he enjoyed and my husband had one of the curries. I can t fault them on the abundance of fish and meat, there was lots in all dishes but the curry flavour was just ok. Overall disappointed we didn t get those delicious flavours we were expecting. Indian food is a favourite of ours and being from the UK originally we ve been spoiled for choice with Indian restaurants so we have a lot of experience with the dishes. Thandi didn t live up to expectations on this occasion Good service and ambience though, it was almost a full house on a Tuesday night!

The restaurant is marketed as Indian, but has dishes from all over the world. A different twist on Korma chicken which tasted very good Cheesecake is not very Indian, but tasted good anyway The service was quick and pleasant

In a greazy port city, enveloped by dancing fog comes a beacon of exotic flavors, textures and quality food one would not expect: Thandi!! The expectations were exceeded on every facet of the dining experience: PACKED on a random Monday evening; prompt service, courteous service, tasty, quality foods (2 Indian, one thai) and two phenomenal home made desserts (not too sweet, but packing with taste and texture--just how it should be!)! Was able to chat with the owners Ken and Holly and thanked them for the perfectly curated ambience, menu and well trained staff. I was told they are successful entrepreneurs in the food industry and it completely encapsulates their dedication to a magnificent dining experience! Kudos and a must try, TRUST me. Vegetarian options: Tons of amazing veggie options and we appreciated the substations!!

Great food, great atmosphere.

So I drive into Thandis from Hampton wich takes me about 30 minutes. The last 5 or 6 times Ive ordered they never have chopsticks. Now tell me why a place as expensive as this cant afford chopsticks but Splash always has them,Linn Chau always has them ??? It will probly be the last time I go. There food is starting to get worse. You spend almost 40$ for 1 dish and they cant afford 10 cent chopsticks . To me its unexceptable when a Thai restaurant does not have any chopsticks.

The food was not up to par. The naan was store bought naan, which was shocking. For an establishment that is supposed to be high-end, store bought naan is inexcusable, it ruined the whole dining experience. The curries were okay. Service was great though.

We had a large group of 20+out for dinner on a Saturday night. Fidel was an excellent server. The private room was delightful! Every dish was delicious - from fish pakora to pad Thai and spicy chicken dishes! So nice to all be together and to have a delicious meal. Thank you Thandi s!

Not much Indian variety is available. Dont go on online menu. Its marely to attract. Dishes mentioned in online menu are not even listed in their dinning menu. If you are really Indian food lover this place is not for you. No taste authenticity. Service charges are too high. Not ordered any liquor but liquor serving charges are charged that again 20$ and for serving beverages extra 6$. Means on serving beverages only they charged 26$ along with govt HST Tax 18.30$. On total food bill of 96$ they charged total 44$. Means 45.83% of the charges. Will not recommend at-all to any Indian food lover. Vegetarian options: Not have much to order in vegetarian. And what all is available no such authentic taste. Not at all recommendable..

Bad service and long wait. Forced to tip 18% because we were in a group.

BEWARE : Booked for a group of 16 people on a Tuesday, restaurant was nowhere near busy, almost empty. Service was terrible, it took an absurd amount of time for us to receive our food, which I obviously am aware can be longer with bigger groups but this time it was ridiculous. It was two and a half hours before we were able to pay and leave. The cherry on top was the waiter that forced us to give him 18% tip for every people in the group, stating restaurant policy with group larger than 8 ..all in all food was decent, but service was terrible and they robbed us with an 18% tip which even after trying to change the tip to a lower amount, the waiter was arguing and leading into a verbal altercation. Will never go back to this restaurant, very poor business practices beware if you decide to venture with a group larger than 8.

I always get squirreled away at the same table for 2 upstairs- for the past 6 visits. The seating at that table is uncomfortable - meshed between a viewless table and a plastic gated cash, by the washroom. My guest got his dinner late as it was wrong. I don t think I ll go back tried too many times to make this place special.

This is my fifth time at Thandi. Appetizers were delicious as usual, first time trying the pad thai and rogan josh which were fairly large portions with an 8/10 score for a first time try. Service was prompt and efficient, we asked for a change of cutlery which was immediate, same thing with the change of water, but when we asked for a change of napkin we were told it would be a few minutes as the server had to attend to other guests but few seconds later a fresh set of cutlery wrapped in napkins were presented to us. We were also asked to remove our cutlery used for our apps and keep them for our mains, even though later a fresh set of cutlery wrapped in napkins were presented, meaning there was no shortage of cutlery. I personally got the vibe that the server was getting irritated by us asking for stuff, but where a napkin fell/there was something in the water I m not sure if we were not supposed to ask for a change. All in all Thandi will remain one of my favorite places to dine, but wouldn t advise it if you re used to a certain level of decorum in terms of the service.

Had Indian cuisine, any more authentic and it would have sand in it.

Food was good. Service was ok. To be fair, we had friends show up unexpectedly and they moved us to a larger table. There was a large group in at the same time as us and we felt that we were forgotten.

Easily the best restaurant in Saint John. Even the non-Indian food is top notch. Always so so fresh. Parking: On street public parking available. Kid-friendliness: Brought my 2 year old here. They have high chairs.

I am someone traveling across Canada,and my favorite dish is Chicken biriyani.No surprises,i have ordered Chicken Biriyani.Its just rice mixed with some chicken pieces.I have got a mango lessy,the worst maggo lessy i ever tried period.I am sure that the no one in that restaurant tasted actually mango lessy,they just mixed mango pulp with ice. One last thing,the biriyani itself cost me 29 cad before tax. If you dont care about your dollar value and want to try a different chicken biriyani,you can try this place.But even for free dollars please dont try the mango lessy.

I absolutely loved this place. I typically stick with my favorite dish which is butter chicken but, I tried the curry lamb and oh my! I think I found a new favorite Indian dish.

Great time for my first dinner there! We were in a group of 22, and our server was exceptional to us all! The food were great, and smelled so good. I would definitely come back again!

Its my 3rd time there and always positively impressed. The service is flawless, as well as the food. The Indian menu is recommended : tasting platter for the first visit and then butter chicken not to be missed.

the food was so bad it made me sick. the pad thai was disgusting and i threw up. cesar salad was too salty and wonton soup tasted like broth with dough instead of dumplings. massively overrated the service was obnoxious and i felt like i was rushed out of the restaurant. it was my first and last time

I booked Thandi with a set menu for a corporate group of 24 . My entire group loved the experience and are still raving about the butter chicken a month later. The only complaint is that we all ate too much! Service was quick and delicious. Highly recommend for your group or a date night.

Being an Indian who is a great lover of food. The taste is not up to the expectations, packed naan was heated, rice didnt heat properly. They heated the plate to make you feel that the food was warm but it wasnt. So, I wouldnt recommend any vegetarian Indian food lover this place.

I have been to Thandi a few times but my daughters first time. I love the food and I think my daughter is very pleased with the foodas well! The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable. The service is quick and the presentation is outstanding! We definitely recommend this restaurant and will be back!

Great place for lunch or a night out. Atmosphere is nice and inviting, food is impressive, and prices are on parr with similar establishments. Last time I was there, I had the Seafood Masala. It was good, but I found the flavor of the sauce overpowered the flavor of the seafood too much. Definitely coming back though.

Visiting SJ for the weekend and heard a lot of good things about this restaurant. It turned out to be amazing. We loved the experience and the service. Our waiter (Gerry?) was knowledgeable and attentive. Food was amazing, like next-level amazing. Can t wait to go back. Only critique I would have is that for the caliber of restaurant and cocktail menu I d expect a real mojito with muddled mint, but it was a pre-made mixture with ice. The waiter took it back right away and was very respectful about my dislike of it. Amazing experience overall!

I have to mention the food first, because it is phenomenal!! I have no doubt their food would impress anyone who loves a good curry. The atmosphere is warm, comforting and welcoming. The staff are incredibly friendly and attentive. If there was one downside, we were in and out the door in about 35 minutes, which felt somewhat rushed. I did not even finish my drink as I did not want to chug the last few gulps. This was a Saturday night so I do understand the needs to keep traffic flowing. All in, it was a great experience, the only point of contention was feeling a bit rushed as my partner and I were celebrating our 3 year anniversary, and wanted the evening to feel longer. Edit: We went back for my birthday, we were not rushed at all, the service and the food were both phenomenal! I cannot compliment them enough.

Delicious. The bread Nachos are killer. Wings are like I make at home, absolutely no flair to justify the cost. Won Ton Soup is fusion and so we get that, and it was very filling, but it s technically not good. Floury taste and under seasoned jammed with odd ingredients stealing from it s simplicity. The Pad Thai is delicious but not really Pad Thai. Woke bathrooms. Will be back, but not as enthusiastic as we were before having tried it.

Worst Indian food ever. All the curries taste the same and the mango lassi was filled with ice. Asked for a replacement and the restaurant gladly did. Naans are store bought and not tandoor cooked.

Ambience of place is amazing however food is not for spicy lovers, but if you are looking for not spicy ( sweet curries) food this is your place. I wish they be serving thai green chillies on side just to blend in the spicy taste for spicy food lovers as they only use mild red chilli powder in food. Also they don t have chapati or naan. The naan they serve is kind of ready made bread type chapati.

This is a comfortable and elegant place to dine. The menu offers a variety of choices. The Indian cuisine on the menu is especially delicious. The steaks are also tasty and satisfying. The staff is courteous and efficient. The prices are reasonable for the quality and service. I enjoy spicy food, but I suggest they inquire about the preferred spiciness level of the food. It would also be helpful if they displayed pictures of their menu items. Also the place can be noisy if its crowded.

Thandis catered my wedding for over 200 people. Their professionalism and work ethic was unmatched. I am still receiving calls and texts about how it was the best wedding food ever!! Our guests could not believe how delicious it was. 10/10 would recommend Thandis to eat in or to cater any size event. They were amazing, their staff was an absolute delight!!

One word ... EXCEPTIONAL! Wow, the food and service were amazing. Keith our server was wonderful. And as for the food ... the chicken vindaloo was incredible: so much meat, fresh, very little potato padding, and a great sauce. I asked for extra spicy and oh boy it was exactly as requested: super spicy but it still had all the flavours. Note that every meal comes with rice and naan included, so on that basis its great value. One criticism: the naans appeared to be shop-bought, not authentic, maybe they dont have a tandoor oven to make naans in house. BTW the wine is very reasonably priced! I cannot speak highly enough of the food and ambience (this place is in a gorgeous old brick building). See pics

I was in town for a week and decided to check out Thandi based on the rave reviews. It did not disappoint!!!! I got chicken tikka masala and it was phenomenal: the sauce was flavorful and just a little spicy, the chicken was tender, and the naan bread was the best I ve ever had. Service and ambience were great too. I came back a second time this week because I enjoyed it so much. Highly recommend!

You could find a amazing experience at a better fare within stones throw of this establishment. As a host in the hospitality industry, as well as a person who is family-oriented, I have heard many opinions on Thandi s that are parallel with my own experiences at this restaurant. I regret to say that in recent years I have chosen to stop sending clients, friends, and family to Thandi as people frequently return disappointed. Clearly a lot has changed since they opened their doors 10+ years ago. I would love to revisit someday, but I have yet to find a reason. Great atmosphere, good menu, but the level of customer service (or lack thereof) leaves much to be desired. Your money is no good to us can go one of two ways. For the price, you d think they would try to encourage your patronage. I have found the demeanour and general behaviour of staff members to be rather deplorable.

What happened to Thandis???? 100% felt like a foreigner in my own country. Waiter did not speak english hardly and was quite rude. The kitchen had non english canadians who were hitting each other and throwing food around at each other. Will not be a place my family and I will return to again. Saint John that i knew and loved has gone, Sad

Amazing food.

Dropped in (party of 2) around 7:30 on a Wednesday evening and were seated right away. Ordered the Nan Nachos for a starter and Butter Chicken and Vindaloo (Lamb) for our entree. Nachos came out right away and were super good and plentiul (we couldnt eat them all if we wanted to save room for our entrees). The Butter Chicken was reported to be very good, but the Vindaloo was outstanding, and as feared, I couldnt finish it all. Our server (Bob) was also excellent. Would go back anytime Im in St John.

Great food and atmosphere, fast service. The Indian Platter for 2 was amazing, and so was the Lamb Vindaloo & Matar Paneer

One of the best restaurants in Saint John. Butter chicken my favorite. Cant go wrong with anything on the menu. Spicy/hot things are indicated so you are not surprised when trying something new.

I had the spicy Thai chicken. This was my first visit. For the price there should be more chicken, I found there was not a lot. Service was great. I believe his name was Darryl. Kept filling out water quickly and checked in on us for drinks too. Would go back!

A family member took me to this restaurant many years ago and when I was back in town yesterday I decided to go back. I was met at the door by a waitress who bluntly asked me what do you need rather then ask me if I wanted a menu or how many people were joining me. The service was quick as I was the only one in the restaurant and I enjoyed the mushroom matar emencly but saying the service was subpar would be giving too much credit. My plate was scooped as I was finishing my last bite and I was asked if I wanted anything else. It took me awhile to answer as I was still eating. I left leaving a 50% tip only because being a server myself at fine establishments, I understand that not all the work is done by the server. I will go back because the food was very enjoyable. I only hope then that the serviced matches the quality of the food.

A wonderful dining experience in the heart of Saint John. Great food and great customer service all washed down with a decent glass of house red and excellent ambience.

We dropped in for a take away order and the bar tender took our order ..he was great and super helpful. He served us drinks as we waited ..which was only a few mins. We were shocked how fast they made order. Vegetarian options: The veg curry was awesome!!

Chicken vindaloo was the colour of Kraft pizza sauce. Zero heat and zero spice .. been patreon for many years and worst food ever from them. Waiter seen we never came close to finishing our meal and couldnt bother to ask about it nor even interested in keeping our drinks/beer

Excellent food & service! When we enter the restaurant we were greeted by Darshan. Despite the restaurant was fully busy, Darshan managed to get us a table at the 2nd floor.Thanks to him.Our server Fillado (sorry may be I pronounce him wrong) was very professional and gave us splendid service. Food was spot on taste thanks to chefs. Overall it was a great dinning experience. Highly recommended, whoever visit Saint John must try this restaurant.

Out of all the restaurants I went to in Saint John, Thandi was the most crowded! The place was packed for a random Wednesday and with good reason, their food and service was fantastic. Their curries come with naan and rice so theyre super filling and it was delicious too. We ordered mango lassi along with our meal, Id definitely recommend it.
