Authentic Thai food in a historic building with views of the Reversing Falls in Saint John New Brunswick
The food is always excellent, the owners are very friendly and accommodating. Wishing you all the best in your new location!
Unfortunately, we have to leave a bad review. We were seated at 7:45(ish) on Valentine's day. Our reservations were for 7:15. That delay is fine. People are enjoying a night out. We left at 9:30, without ever getting our entrees. The annoying bit was watching the multiple tables seated after us get their meals (apps and entrees), eat, pay and leave, and still waiting for food. The wait staff did their best and were wonderful. We do appreciate their efforts. This is our second bad experience (previously they cancelled our 1st anniversary dinner last minute because they forgot they were closed). As much as this was my go to special date night place, it's highly unlikely we'll ever go back. The extra annoying part was this was one of the few nice places that I could eat at with my dietary restrictions. Hopefully management will be able to identify where the breakdowns happen and find a resolution.
It was a great experience tonight! My partner and I arrived for reservations at 5:00 and we were surprisingly the only people there but the atmosphere was incredible. It’s Christmas time and it sure felt like it with all of the decorations! My girlfriend got the cashew stirfry with tofu and I got the burger with caeser salad. The servings were humongous, and overall the food was good. Our server was also fantastic and made the night that much better!
The restaurant is stunning, great service, and amazing food! The prices are very reasonable and the portions huge. Next time I’d plan to share a bunch of different entrees with the table so I could taste more things!
The service was great and I would rate it 5/5. The food was a 3/5. It was overpriced in my opinion and we were overcharged for one of our dishes, which took a while to correct.
🌟It was an amazing experience 🌟 My friend and I got there at 12pm this Monday, while they open at 4pm but we didn’t find out…… The exciting thing is that they still served us! And the food is so delicious! Will definitely visit again!!!
By far my favourite restaurant in Saint John, my go to dish is cashew chicken and a popia (kind of like a spring roll!). I stopped by for lunch this week with my 5 year old daughter and they were so accomodating, they made her a yellow curry, extra mild and made it a little sweeter. She loved it. She is asking to have "suwanna food" for dinner today and its her favourite place to go! She also loves the cabbage and carrot salad, the masaman curry and i absolutely love the sweet and sour chicken. It has a pineapple sauce instead of the typical red sweet and sour sauce, the lightly chicken is battered in a light, very crisp batter that adds the most delicate crunch when you bit into it!
Disappointed this time. It has been a few years since I've been at the Suwanna Restaurant. I think good Thai Food needs Thai Basil. There was none in the curries. Hopefully if I go back the experience will be better. UPDATE: Went back a year later. Very disappointed in price vs quality. Thai dishes without Thai basil. Prices on average 22$. This is 10$ more than I pay in Ottawa. Have to say, Saint John has other options to consider. The owners are very nice. But that is not enough to go back.
Wonderful location and food Totally worth it! Food
I just want to give a shout out to Brittany. Shes an amazing. We go for date nights and are always happy to be served by her ! Food is amazing and she is amazing
Not the best curry or Thai food Ive had. Average.
I ordered Pad Thai, which cost $22. It does not come with any protein, not even tofu. You need to pay an extra $5 for tofu and it goes up in price for proteins from there. For whatever reason, it also comes with a cup of white rice. So basically you are paying $22 for rice and noodles. It had a weird almost acidic taste to it and I did not enjoy it. I do not recommend the Pad Thai.
Excellent food and perfect service. We got a little bit of everything and split it between 9 people. Only 4 stars on atmosphere because it was cold sitting beside the large windows on a winters night.. everything else was superb!
Fabulous all the way round.
The best Thai in New Brunswick
Just wrapping up dinner on the patio at Suwanna. Food was flavourful and delicious. Staff and owners were welcoming and caring. Had the pleasure of having Zoé take care of us, absolutely lovely and thoughtful. We were offered freshly washed blankets on what is a somewhat chilly evening, while discussing the first year of ownership with the new patrons. Felt very welcome despite having our 6-month old baby with us, which is not always something restaurant owners and staff seem to like. They accommodate us with all of our special baby needs! We asked advice on the menu and were explained the whole thing in detail (which made choosing difficult cause everything seemed delicious!). Will definitely come back the next time we pass through St-John - and will call 24 hours in advance to order the mouth-watering slow-cooked duck on the menu!
Excellent food, beautiful building on Lancaster Ave.
The appetizer platter was delicious. Skewers, spring roll, curry puff, and a great spicy salad. Good kick to it! Unfortunately the curries were not up to the same level. The panang curry had a pretty good flavor profile but was a bit too salty, where it drowned out the actual flavours. It also was lukewarm. But the green curry was WAY too salty, we were actually feeling dehydrated and a bit unwell afterwards. Im not exaggerating. All you could taste was the salt. The appetizers were great, but I dont recommend the curries.
Omigosh, this was oustanding!! Great food with a subtle and varied palate of flavours in a wonderful setting. Highly recommended.
great food, excellent service and above expectation venue. Pricing very much according to the overall value of what you get. Best place for Thai food in Saint John imho. Food
I am not into really bashing places so I will keep this as short as I can and just the main points. And please be advised I can t make this up. We waited over an hour for food and they were not busy at all when we arrived. After we arrived others came and we re eating before we were. And finally the best part. We were brought rice at one point and were kinda excited as out food usually follows in most restaurants..nope.. out waitress comes back to our table, asks if we had touched the three plates of rice yet and we said no. She told us our food would be a bit longer, takes the plates to the hallway, turns around and drops them at the table in the next area.. yup. Oh it gets better these folks say but we ordered appetizers and haven t received them yet so she takes the rice off of their table and you won t believe what happens next.. it goes to another table in the same room. Yup. I witnessed this as did my wife and son. Needless to say we will not return again. Kindly if the owners get the opportunity to read this that it s not personal at all. We just wanted a nice quiet meal. But what we witnessed was terrible.
A hidden gem in Saint John, the New ownership has done a great job with their new side bar, and also their patio. The food has always been top notch, and still is a great meal. I love everything about this place!
We celebrated a 50th Birthday and it was great! Our waitress was great and the food was delicious! I haven t been there for at least 15 years but believe me I will be back soon.
Absolutely delicious!
Ordered in advance We Showed up on time Paid 15min later asked how long it would be Kitchen didnt get order said it would be at least another 20 min Ask for refund and they couldnt figure it out Got a coupon instead Hope they enjoyed the tip for nothing
Incredible food, ambience and remarkably friendly staff/management. I highly recomend the Maple Curry dish, absolutely phenomenal!!
Great place, people and food
Absolutely delicious, always
Great taste and excellent customer service experience.
Early Valentines day dinner the food, atmosphere and service were Amazing. Its been years since we have been but we will be back soon.
Great food great atmosphere fantastic service.
Suwanna is our favorite, fine dining, restaurant. The food is always prepared perfectly and tastes beyond delicious. We love the staff, they are terrific.
Not recommended. First take out order under the new ownership - Food sorely underwhelming, didnt match order or website descriptions both on final bill and listed food pricing. Called for simple remedy - was put on two very long holds which in the end did not result in the owners promise of a refund being honoured. Disturbing conversation devolved to having to record the outrageous and bizarrely toxic exchange with owner who showed a complete lack of integrity. Was a horrible experience in the end- charged $65 - for a pad Thai (no meat/veg), a chicken curry (no veg) and one roll?? The new owners lack of integrity coupled with the lack of refund that was promised but not followed through on, is the absolute worst restaurant experience weve ever had - beginning with the sorely misleading prices, stock description & photos of meals that didnt match food provided, the numerous hours of time wasted on food order, pick up and phone convo with both owners who couldnt explain why they kept lying when directly contradicting each other. Wife owner claimed no knowledge of their website, the location of it online and then after directed to it by us - claimed the website wasnt theirs and we were mistaken; after putting us on hold for almost a 30 minutes, the owner came back on the line and then counter-claimed they used a company who used internet stock photos and then couldnt account for why pricing for take out differed from restaurant pricing even though it was a direct order not through a subsidiary/ delivery service akin to skip/uber eats... This bizarre experience was trumped only by another long phone hold with husband owners unapologetic combativeness and complete lack of etiquette! The entire experience stained our familys endeared tradition of date night. A very unfortunate experience of long time patrons being so poorly treated. Suwannas excellent reputation and standards that it once held, are not synonymous with the current owners.
Amazing food in a wonderful Victorian style setting. Customer service was spectacular
Had dinner there with family and left amazed by the food! Im not familiar with Tai food and expected not to like it very much. Totally changed my mind after eating there! The food was delicious! Enjoyed everything immensely and hope to be back soon! Atmosphere and service were top quality. Treat yourself to dinner there, you will be happy you did!
Very welcoming greeting with service provided in French by a very friendly and helpful server. The service was timely and the food was outstanding. Outstanding evening!
Awesome food and staff
All the meals weve ordered here have been delicious! A gorgeous antique-style building with a great atmosphere.
I think this is the best food Ive ever had. The atmosphere was beautiful, the wait staff were great, and the food was beyond delicious! Well worth the price and a visit!
Great spot to have s great meal and a space that gives you time to have the conversations that matter.
This restaurant is absolutely stunning! They went all out in decorating for the holidays, along with the ambiance, background music, and top notch service it felt like a gourmet dining experience. I think they converted a big house into a restaurant so it feels very homey in there. The pad thai was good too Parking: There is a driveway looping around the building but it can fill up quick. I parked on the street and it was fine
The food was fantastic! Charming historical place to go
Suwanna is one of the best restaurants in this city. Every item on the menu is fantastic especially the spicy spinach salad. Its light, crispy, and packs a punch. Butter chicken is also a staple of this restaurant. Every item is made with an immense amount of passion and care. If you dont believe me order takeout and see how beautifully they pack their takeout boxes. 10/10 recommend.
Co-workers recommend Suwanna as I was craving Thai Food...When I phoned to order take-out, the new owner informed me that they were not opened yet as they were renovating for the reopening on Canada day, however, they accommodated me and took my order anyway as they were getting familiar with the menu recipes... I ordered the Red Curry Chicken and the Cashew Chicken and I must say, Both were delicious!!!
Authentic high quality Thai fare that is available for dine in or take out. This is my favourite West Saint John restaurant. I had take out for the first time, and the portions were more than ample. Short walk to the Reversing Falls.
The quality of the food was just amazing! The service was 100%. I really cant say enough about Suwanas. If anyone is looking for a quality restaurant...its the place to go!
What an amazing and unique experience, featuring the best Thai food in Atlantic Canada! The service is amazing, with both the owners and staff going out of their way to make you feel welcomed and appreciated. The decor is charming and unexpected with the finest coved ceilings and hand painted trim work I have ever seen. A truly beautiful heritage building that makes the dining experience even more enjoyable. We need a Suwanna in Halifax,NS!
I visited Suwanna on September 20th. The character of the building and upscale feel added to the dining experience. The menu is diverse, and theres a multitude of options for anyone who enjoys Thai food. I opted for a combination of appetizers, that I shared with a friend and ordered the Pad Thai (chicken) as my entreé. The flavour and freshness of the food was incredible. As great as the food was, the true star of the evening was Alicia. She was happy, engaging, witty, and offered menu suggestions that were perfect. She struck the perfect balance of checking in with me, while not being bothersome or overbearing as some wait staff can be. Did I mention her suggestion of the lemon cheesecake? The cheesecake was an absolute gem, and a must try if you visit Suwanna. If I lived in the area, I would visit Suwanna as frequently as possible.
Great green space with some beautifully carved indigenous art pieces throughout.
This was my favorite restaurant growing up. The unsettling disregard for COVID measures while I was there last weekend, coupled with raw, slowly delivered sweet potatoes, will be why I wont return. I really hope the amazing recipes this restaurant was built on will return to their former glory so that I can enjoy the restaurant again. For now Ill wait for a recommendation on when to return following improvements. Seriously disappointed in the current state of this once brilliant hidden gem.
The red curry I got was fantastic! Great service too.
Great ambiance, perfect setting for a date! Dishes came out hot fresh and so fast. Service was excellent and the new owners even came to my table to ask how everything was. They were so attentive this place is really a hidden gem. Will definitely return!!!!
The owner, Donna, at Suwanna is a lovely, friendly restaurateur. Roger served us a lovely lunch of chicken satay, pad thai and matsaman curry. It was so delicious! Gorgeous setting, beautiful views but they did not outshine the food!!
It was so delicious! The service was wonderful, we ordered for take out and waited in the lobby, the staff was wonderful and polite, we chatted about the BEAUTIFUL building and before we knew it the food was ready. We had the Suwanna chicken and the yellow curry, they were both to die for! Next time we drop an engine off in Saint John we re eating here!
Having read some of the recent reviews, we were a little weary for our first visit. That said, we couldnt be happier we decided to. Fast and friendly service, cozy atmosphere and phenomenal food! Highly recommended.
Excellent service, excellent food and an absolutely beautiful atmosphere. Highly recommend. Dining in at its best.
Dont get me wrong, flavour is decent, but everything in this picture was $71 before tip and delivery. Wild.
Amazing food. Beautiful place for a nice gathering.
This place and its owners never fail. Truly the best in Thai in the province. An restaurant that delivers every time in one of the finest heritage properties in the city. Be forewarned, no social media profile that they manage, very old school, phone and make a reservation. :)
Incredible food and wonderful service. Beautiful old building, very charming place for groups of any size.
I can easily say the best Thai food in Atlantic Canada.
Great service! Beautiful atmosphere ! And delicious food!
Best thai food in Saint John. This place has a very good reputation and long time regular customers. The building is from a older era with crown molding and cathedral ceilings. It has an old castle effect inside which looks amazing. Highly recommended restaurant for a unique experience.
Great food in a quiet setting. Love the architecture of the old house.
Always 5 stars
Love this place. Best Pad Thai anyywhere
Excellent service, delicious food.
Every time I come here, I m never disappointed. The food is always amazing and the portions are quite big. The hours can be variable throughout the year so make sure you call ahead to make a reservation.
Food is amazing and the service was fantastic.
This place is amazing! I live in Chicago and I have to say that this is by far the best thai food I have ever had! As a world traveler Ive had thai food at many cities/countries and none have compared. Everytime I come back to SJ this is my go to spot!
Yellow Currie was out of this world delicious!!
Great food and great atmosphere
Absolutely the best Thai food you will ever get.
Best food in town!
The best Thai food in Saint John.
I have NO idea why this place is so highly rated! We had dinner here tonight for the first time and boy were we dissapointed. The pros: The matsamam curry had a great flavour but the chicken was bland and overdone. Also, the staff were very friendly so I added another star just for them. The cons: The rice (what little they give you) tasted like minute rice, it took 40 minutes for our food to come, our other main dish was awful (soggy and gross), the price (way too expensive for what we were served) and the decor and bathrooms were drab and dirty. I really wanted to like this place because everyone raves about it but, for the price it just is not up to snuff. I think the fact that the Westside is starved for good food makes this place more appealing but honestly, they can and should be doing A LOT better. The people of SJ need to stop settling for second rate food and start demanding more from our restaurateurs!
Good service and special meals all depending to customers choice
Awesome food and service best restaurant in Saint John by far
Best Thai food hands down!
Always excellent quality food and service
Great Thai food.
Suwannas is always a treat to visit. Set in an old house you feel like a guest in friends dinning room. I am not sure when this restaurant opened exactly, though I know its been over a decade and being a bit off the beaten track it has certain stood the test of time. That should give you a hint about the quality served here. My favourite dish is a spicy green curry, served up in a large portion I get to look forward to a leftover snack the next day. There were five of us on our recent visit to Suwannas and everyone left satisfied. Apart from the delicious Thai food we had great service. One suggestion though, is to update a website! I cant find you on the worldwide web and all the Saint John visitors should know about this restaurant.
Food and service were amazing. Menu is just right and offers plenty of choices.
Great food awesome atmosphere good service
Food was fantastic!! Windows of the old building could use a cleaning. The dead flies in the old farm house look detracted from the evening.
The food., atmosphere and staff are all the best. It is hands down the best food in town. Steve is the best server ever. He has our wine ready before we sit down.
The best Thai food ever! Curries and Pad Thai are the best!!
Very good food and excellent waitress helping us decide from the large menu
Have eaten here on many occasions. Always been very full and very satisfied. Love the carrot peanut salad
Awesome food and service as usual. Have never been disappointed. Its the best restaurant in Saint John.
Best Thai in the East!
Best Thai food ever! You cannot go wrong with any meals here. The chocolate cheesecake is amazing. I never have room for dessert but trust me, youll be happy you got it.
Have been here a few times. Food is amazing!
Easily the worst Pad Thai Ive ever eaten. It was almost flavourless, like noodles with soya sauce and peanuts on them. The tofu was bland and tasted like it was cooked separately from the rest of the dish. Not worth $20.50, Ive had better Thai food in a shopping mall.
Tasty food
Excellent food and good sized portions.
Friken awesome food!
called in, no answer. so disappointed
Love the red curry. Must eat here. As usual Debbie did an awesome job on service
It was amazing as always. Love their chicken Satays, Pad Thai, Suwanna chicken , sour coconut soup, Massaman curry. Incredible service too. Foods always hot and served with courteous staff. Debbie is the best!
ShadsrADEW Momode
This is a great spot. Make sure to bring your appetite very good size portions! Massaman curry is amazing!
Ive tried a lot of Thai restaurants in many different cities and this is one of the best! The massaman curry is a must .... book ahead and enjoy.
Delish
Have never had a bad meal from this restaurant. Food quality is always high, staff are not only friendly and courteous, but know the menu inside out and can help navigate new dishes. The Massaman curry is the best I have tasted anywhere in the World (and I have spent a good deal of time in Asia), and the Dragon Eggplant chicken has to be experienced, it can not be explained. Best way to experience this restaurant is in a group of 4 - 8 people, each with a different dish, and everyone shares a little of their own. Interesting deserts. Owners are genuinely good people who are interested in their customers, and the bed and breakfast which the restaurant operates out of is a historic building that has signifigant renovations that are faithful to the period. Great view of the falls to boot.
