Wonderful place. I had eaten Ethiopian before but this was Eritrean which was quite similar. The lady who is presumably the owner is very kind, and the food is AMAZING and very well priced. three of us ate there for under $60 for dinner and were very full afterwards. 10/10 would recommend.
Ignore the negative reviews! People complaining about small portions must eat much more than average, because we have been several times now and one sample platter was more than enough to feed two adults and leave us stuffed! Quality is very very good for the price, everything is delicious and spiced perfectly, and you always leave feeling as if you have had a nutritious meal. The hostess/owner is warm but does not disturb when you are eating. Tea is excellent and a must try as a digestive! Well worth the dine-in experience as this place is almost always criminally empty. High recommendation!
My family and I had an amazing meal at Dahlak Eritrean. I had never had Eritrean food before and felt transported to a different place eating with my hands. It was an awesome experience to have with my family visiting from South Carolina. They really enjoyed it and our drinks were good too. We shared two veggie platters between three people which was the perfect portion size. The service is great!
Was in town for just one night and was looking for something vegan. I found Dahlak on Google and wasn't disappointed. I opted for the Veggie Platter so I could try all the options. Everything was tasty with just a little kick. So filling with the bread that I had to take some to the hotel for a late night snack. Clean, tidy and quaint space. I took one star off for service, simply because only one person was working the kitchen and serving, taking cash etc. when I was there. The owner I suspect. Her service was great, but it can be a little slow due to the multiple roles. But don't let that scare you off. You can tell that the food is prepared with care. Give Dahlak a try! They deserve your business.
We were passing through Saskatoon and looking for a different experience for dinner. We found Dahlak Eritrean Restaurant on Google maps, and decided this was definitely an adventure after an 8 hour drive. We were not disappointed. Salam explained the dishes to us carefully. She brought us delicious cocktails (the Sangria is wonderful). I had a veggie platter with injera, and my husband had spicy okra with beef. It was all wonderful, flavorful, and well presented. Eating food with the tasty, light, spongy injera instead of silverware adds to the enjoyment and appreciation of the meal. Highly recommend this restaurant.
You can't go wrong with Ethiopian or Eritrean foods. You just can't. I finally tried the Doro Wat (perhaps it has a different Eritrean name), and it was delicious. The waitress warned me about the spiciness, but I found it below my tolerance. Loved the way they prepared the injera. It had some spongy, slightly chewy taste to it. This is the second Ethiopian/Eritrean restaurant I've visited that pays good attention to the injera. I found the salad taste different from what I would get from an Ethiopian restaurant. Perhaps the ways they make salads differ slightly. The waitress was very nice. I recommend it if you're in town.
We finally had the chance to try this place and we were quite excited to have some Ethiopian food in Saskatoon. The food was good; however, for the portions of protein compared to the the cost was disappointing. Around 25$ for each dish with mostly vegetables and little beef. The somasa was very tasty. The service was good and the atmosphere was quite nice.
I recently went here for lunch with a group of 6 and it was a fantastic experience! We were welcomed as soon as we walked in and were seated promptly. One of my co-workers had called in advance letting them know a larger group was coming in and this cuisine was new to us. She had suggestions of what we should order, so we went with her recommendation. We received a few large meat and vegetable platters and she split them onto individual plates. All the food was delicious and seasoned to perfection! The chickpeas in particular were phenomenal. We also received complimentary tea and coffee at the end of the meal accompanied by popcorn (a tradition in Eritrea). She did a live serving of pouring the coffee and adding the sugar at an end table beside us and then served it. Both the tea and coffee were very tasty and the popcorn was a great accompaniant.
Dietary restrictions: Very accommodating for gluten free! Food
Delicious food and amazing service! Totally worth a visit! (If the open sign is turned on but the door is locked, just wait and theyll let you in)
Amazing food!
You open at 1130, however i was at your front door at 1145 and nobody home. 456
I cant recommend it enough. This is such a beautiful place. The owner was incrediblely nice and helpful. The food tasted so amazing and delicious. The place is so clean and tidy. Anyone going there wont be disappointed at all.
Authentic
I got 2 meal platters for 2. It was so disappointing the containers were small with even less food to fill them. The injera and food had a chemical taste to them . I was so excited to have this type of food again but wouldnt order again sadly . Food
Very good food, cooked by the owner herself. The platters are marked as shareable for two but you can have it on your own if you have a good appetite.
Lovely hidden gem in Saskatoon. Very homey environment and tasty well-spiced food. The injera was very spongy and soft. For a first-timer with injera, l will definitely be back for more. The owner/waitress was very helpful and friendly and went above and beyond to make our visit as comfortable as possible. Definitely a spot for East-African cuisine lovers as well as the curious gastronomers!
Great food. Fun atmosphere. The owner was a fantastic host!
Wow, amazing service and delicious food. I love it. Thank you, Dahlak Restaurant!!
Very tasty food and awesome and friendly folks!!!
The ambience at Dahlak restaurant is charming and cozy, with dim lighting and soft jazz music. The menu offers a delightful fusion of Eritrean and Ethiopian cuisine, featuring dishes like meat lovers platter, red tibs and derho. The service is attentive and the portions are generous. A perfect spot for a romantic dinner or a cozy evening with friends.
Great food and location!
Our family all find the food and service exceptional. The owner truly cares and provides a positive experience
The food was delicious- I m so glad we have an Eritrean restaurant in town! The owner is very friendly and helpful with menu choices and educating about the food. We ll be back for the injera and the experience!
Great location downtown Saskatoon. The platters are filling and delicious. I look forward to going back again.
Review ratings are misleading. I had their Red Tibs with rice, food is tasty and not too salty. Food portions are very small for a 22$ main course Beer served in small can, no glass, two diff music playing in background. It s only me at the restaurant at 4pm, the host/server looks totally uninterested in serving. I am sorry, I won t come back here, terrible experience.
Dahlak is the best restaurant in Saskatoon! Its always my first choice, the shiro and red tibs are a must! When the owner found out my mom was in the hospital, she even gave me extra food to take to her, free of charge! Thank you so much Selam, we love you!
This place is a hidden gem! The food is so delicious and the service is friendly and inviting. The owner, Salam, has put her heart and soul into this place and it shows. Can t find a meal quite like it anywhere else in Saskatoon. I ve seen some complaints about cost, but I find it fair and comparable to most other restaurants. At least here you know you re getting the quality you pay for. AND she caters to gluten free diets so that s a big plus :) Do yourself a favour and get dinner here!
Heres a tip: I was debating between ordering a single veggie dish (~$15) vs. the veggie platter (~$22), when the server told me I could get a mini veggie platter a smaller serving of each of the four veggie dishes for the same price as a single platter. I tried this and was happy with my choice. The dish contained four rolls of injera, the four dishes, plus some bonus cooked green beans that were delicious. I thoroughly enjoyed the food and will go back. Vegetarian options: Four main vegetarian dishes plus a platter option.
Amazing food and very friendly staff.
Hearty food, above and beyond service! The owner (Salam) served us. Her recommendations were spot on, knowing what we were after. She walked us through the menu and suggested that they offered gluten-free. I would recommend and go there whenever I have a chance. Vegetarian options: There are a lot of vegetarian options available Dietary restrictions: Owner is knowledgeable and cares about dietary restrictions
Meat & veggie platter, was a perfect portion and the extra injera was amazing. Great food! Great service! Food
Nice place. Friendly. Minor quibbles: the beef isnt the cut youd expect with the tibs, and food could be hotter. However, wonderful addition to the community. Sufficient injera with the food, which was in reasonable quantity.
I adore this place. Some of the best food in Sask. We go at least twice a month. They make you feel like you are family. If I could eat there everyday I would. I grew up eating Eritrean/Ethiopian food with my dad. Im so glad I found this place so I could continue the tradition with my kids. A big shout out and thank you for having such a great spot with great eats!!!
Edit:ordered delivery. 1 meat platter and 1 veggie platter. Should ve been enough for 4 people but wasn t even enough for 2 people. I was very disappointed as it was very expensive for very little food.
The food quality was great but the portions are small. I was surprised to find out that a platter I ordered suddenly became $10 more than whats shown on the menu because I said it was to be shared with my husband. The amount of food wasnt any more than it was when I ordered for one person. I didnt appreciate not having been told ahead of time instead of popping it up at the till. Plus the highchairs available dont have functional straps.
Delicious food with very good service.
Amazing food, friendly staff, the best ever coffee I ever had 10/10
Amazing food and experience, everything we ordered was delicious. Cant recommend this place enough! Coffee after was 10/10 as well. Vegetarian options: Tons of vegan and veggie options which were personally some of my favourite.
Always delicious!
Really different. Really good! Gonna do it again.
excellent food & service! I would highly recommend!
The food was awesome! It was our first time having this type of food and it was great! The lady serving us helped explain what we were getting and recommended some great food! Awesome flavour and fun to eat with our fingers! Although we broke protocol and eventually asked for a fork! For sure will come back!
So people ordered here today from uber and never got there orders...the trend keeps happening.
We just went for lunch yesterday here and it was an awesome experience! From the very cool coffee presentation, being introduced to injera and the delicious food, I would definitely recommend people to get out and try the unique dishes they have to offer!
Fantastic food, with lots of great options for vegetarians! Service is superb with friendly and very helpful staff. If you re looking to try something completely different from the normal meat and potatoes type cuisine, this is most definitely the place for you!
Loved the food!
Injera ba wat, great chicken and egg doro wat . Spicy and flavourful. We ended the meal with traditional strong coffee, which is served at noon ( supper servings having kept too many awake when they wanted to sleep) Vegetarian options: The base of a sourdough crepe , is always vegetarian, and traditional dishes of lentils and beans ( in a range of spices) and a flavourful vegetable stew, make this both a vegetarian and vegan friendly meal.
First (of probably many) visits. The owner was super friendly and kind and accommodating. We had a group of eight and shared 10 meat and veggie combo platters. She brought out a little plate of lentils and injera for our baby. The food was fantastic. You have to wait a bit for it, but definitely worth it. Very excited to discover this place!
Delicious food
The food was good but the experience was negative. Also we asked for water and was given bottled water for $1.50 each . No warning
First time eating Ethiopian food. It was so flavorful and a wonderful experience. The owner was lovely.
We were very welcomed even though we didnt have reservations and there was a large group of us. The food was really good: perfect spicing, amazing enjera, excellent coffee. Everything fresh and tasty. Check it out!
A hidden gem in the city! We dined there last night with friends and it was hands down one of the most authentic and delicious meals weve had in months. The owner was fantastic, friendly and funny. We enjoyed the entire vegan side of the menu, and it was fall out of your chair good. The vibe is great and we will be returning regularly. These folks deserve to be busy and booming!
Great food. Chill ambiance. Check it out!
So, I was quite excited to try this restaurant. However, the experience on the whole was underwhelming. When it comes to the flavour of the food, it was delicious, no complaints there. The owner explained and recommended some dishes as well. However, the portion size of the Meat Lovers Platter that was shareable for two was only good for one person (picture attached). I expected a little more generous portion for the price. Also, after being served the food and other items of need, we were all on our own till we went to pay the bill. I was also looking forward to enjoying the coffee I had heard so much about, which I know is not something I should just expect but having read so many positive reviews of hospitality being shown this way, I left a bit disappointed.
We had the veggie and meat platter and shared it for 2. The portions were perfect. Definitely recommend! We will be back and have the habesha coffee as well next time
Dine in | Lunch Wow! Food was delicious. Selam are so warm and welcoming. I recommend enjoying a traditional coffee after your meal, you won t be disappointed. Food
So glad to have Ethiopian food in Saskatoon! So filling and delicious. Top 3 best places in the city easy
Everything I tried was delicious and the service was great. Highly recommend!
So yummy, get extra bread
I dined here as my first meal during my first time visiting Saskatoon. Ive had Ethiopian and Somali food before in Toronto, so I was keen on trying Eritrian food. The restaurant was empty when I arrived, and you had to ring a bell for service, which made it a bit intimidating, but in the end it was a great experience! We ordered two dishes: okra with beef and dorho. These two dishes had distinctive flavours and completed each other well. They came with a generous portion of injera (spongy flatbread) and were served on beautiful plates. The lady who served us (presumably the owner) came over to ask us how we liked the food, which was a nice touch. I could sense that she was proud of it. I also briefly chatted with an Eritrian guy at the restaurant after dinner and he was very nice as well. However, the restaurant didnt offer free water...Only bottled water for sale, which was not the best part. Overall, it was still a positive experience and I hope more people discover this restaurant!
Yummmmmmm
It s very good
Frickin fantastic! Got a very good recommendation by the nice lady there. The food was simply amazing. We went there the next day again and it was even better! Definitely found myself a new favorite dish (try the shiro!)!! Simply delicious :) Vegetarian options: The platter with all the vegan eritrean dishes is simply amazing!
One of the best meals I ve had in a long time, and such a lovely lady who served us! Got the meat and veggie platter, and then some coffee to cap it all off. Fantastic.
They have the best Shiro Wat in Saskatchewan. One of the best restaurants in Saskatoon.
The food here is absolutely delicious with friendly service! The only thing that I would recommend is more comfortable seating. There is a bit of a wait for food but the flavours are well worth the wait!
Best Ethiopian restaurants in saskatoon hands down, freshly prepared meals. Top tier quality you pay for what you get.
Really, really good. Would have preferred tap water instead of bottled water. Two platters filed up three of us. Definitely worth stopping in!
This food is insanely amazing! I had the vegetarian platter with injera. The flavors of all the vegetable samples are perfect. The spice level was mild and the food was not oily at all. The injera is a sourdough flatbread that tastes so good with the vegetables and the ratio of veggies to bread is perfect. Myhusband had the beef and okra and I tasted it too and it was divine. The little morsels of meat were tender and well seasoned. Definitely recommend if you like a balance of amazing flavor, healthy and vegan options.
The food was very exquisite
Fabulous customer service, super delicious food! This may be our new favourite local place to eat!
Even in their first week open I can say I really hope this place sticks around in Saskatoon. I have never been disappointed by Ethiopian restaurants and this one fits the bill. Excellent food for meat eaters, vegetarians, and vegan diets. Ordering one of the platters is the best way to sample Ethiopian cuisine if you are not familiar. The platters are served on injera bread, a soft sourdough-like bread thats to die for in my opinion! The food has a wonderful use of spices and flavors. I have no complaints and plan to eat here again!
Best Eritrean food we ve had anywhere. Service is excellent run by a very sweet family. Highly recommend.
Very delicious food. Great customer service. It also has halal options.
Amazing food and great service. definitely my new favourite place to eat!
Friendly, welcoming staff, comfortable dining area, really good food - vegan and meat dishes
A great experience, Im not vegan, but would definitely be a great place if you are. All their very options were delicious. I had the chicken as my meat option, and cant wait to try the beef next time.
So delicious. Great vegetarian options
An excellent restaurant, delicious food, and good customer service. You must check it out.
Really great! Our order took a bit of time, but it was well worth it. Delicious food and excellent service! Will definitely go again.
Such sweet service very welcoming, I love that fact that they kept there culture instead of trying to westernize it like A LOT of other restaurants do. You can tell they really care about you as a whole person great experience!
Food was tasty! Beautiful presentation and the hosts were friendly.
Was a bit disappointed with this restaurant, the lady there is friendly and welcoming but we got a plate for 2 and the amount of food was hardly enough for 1 person and the food didnt taste fresh. They also seem to have a problem with air conditioning as we went the first time just to check the restaurant out and the AC was broken too.
Exciting to see more African places open up in town, service was friendly if a little inattentive to what Im accustomed to. Got a platter with okra, beef, and chicken. Ended up being roughly $17 a person between my partner and I and the food is meant to be shared so bring your friends. Everything was delicious and I will absolutely be returning.
Our first time to Dahlak, the food was great. Monday evening, we were the only customers dining in so very quiet. But will definitely go again & will happily recommend it.
This restaurant is an absolute gem and we cant wait to go back again! We ordered the veggie and okra beef combo plate to share and it was delicious, fresh, and satisfying. The owner was so lovely to talk to and made us feel very welcome. Highly recommend!
We visited last night. The food was fantastic. We got the meat & veg combo and samosa. We were definitely full by the time we finished the meal. The flavours are amazing. I ll be back again!
Great hospitality, and great food. Our first time having Eritrean food so we don t have context on authenticity, but we enjoyed eating with injera. We got a meat and veggie platter to share for two and it was enough for us, and then had a wonderful coffee to finish.
This place is fire
Wow. What a great experience. The owner was super friendly, and took the time to explain what everything was. The food was amazing, and it was super quick. The coffee and tea were awesome. I will be back for sure!
My meal was so great, I must expound. It was delicious. Its of that rare variety of food that makes your body and mind happy and energized in the concurrent hours. Filling my stomach, I was not sluggish but reinvigorated. I feel I was lucky to have decided to eat here today, for somehow this food made me very in tune with myself and fueled my success in a rare, vibrant evening.
Really wonderful food and the owner is so kind. We will definitely be going back.
Expensive and not that great
First time having this cuisine and it was a pleasant experience. Food was tasty and owner was friendly. Similar to other reviews, we also received complimentary coffee and popcorn at the end of our meal. But food was a bit slow maybe because we came in a group of 6. Nevertheless, this restaurant is worth a try!
We went there for lunch today, but found the restaurant closed. We waited for 20 minutes and it was still not open. We love Eritean food and very very disappointed.
Great food, great family that owns and operates!
Delicious food, tea and coffee. Must visit!
Amazing restaurant and amazing service!! Definitely worth checking out, it is a new favourite for us! We had the Shiro Wot as well as the Veggie Platter and it was so good we had to buy some Shiro Wot mix there to cook at home! It s difficult to find vegan options in Saskatoon but there were 4 vegan mains apart from the veggie platter which included a mix of several of them. Also, many of the dishes had a vegan substitution/option available. We felt so welcomed and taken care of as they even gave us a little extra to take home with our leftovers. So impressed with the whole experience! We will definitely be back
Tried the meat combo, veggie combo, and the Alitcha (cabbage and carrots). All the food was delicious (especially like the lamb and chicken on the combo) and the injera is PERFECT. Also nice ambiance and our server was very sweet. Highly recommend and will be back!
