The chicken salad is the blandest, driest sandwich I've ever had i would not get again and for being 11.50 i felt robbed. You should at least be giving chips or something with orders so it feels like we're getting our money worth it. The Reuben is really good.
Penny's Kitchen (St. Ignace.) Lunch. Via was Counter Service, and Waitress - Friendly, Welcoming, Happy, Efficient, great at her job. Then, there was Michelle, who makes terrific food and listens to customers' requests, when passed on from Via. She made one of the best Corned Beef Reubens I've had. My sister Jane had the Ham Club, also good. We both took out half of our sandwiches for dinner plus a carryout of Tuna & Shells for tomorrow. Personally, I could have picked at least 4 other things I would have enjoyed. Thank goodness, the first restaurant we planned on turned out to be closed for the season, and we would have missed trying Penny's. So worth going to.
Delicious food made fresh. Walking distance from downtown. Sandwiches, soups and desserts.
With the posted reviews, we definitely expected more. The waitress was friendly and the bathrooms were clean. Five of us ate breakfast and only one liked their meal. My daughter’s Belgium waffle was like cardboard, had no whipped cream and topped with several moldy strawberries. The bagel sandwich came with an inch thick piece of sausage. Pretty unappetizing. Croissant sandwich was so soggy. Omelette was so bland. The biscuits and gravy looked pink. The prices are outrageous for some things and other things make sense. A side of bacon (2 pieces) is $5 as is a glass of juice! We spent over $100 with tip for breakfast and it was not worth $30.
Cute place, very nice staff. It gets a 3 because the gumbo was NOT good. Tasted like it was last week's reheat. My mister had the farmer's omelette and said it was delicious!
Healthiest and most delicious food options around. Everyone can find something with all the options. The omelets are huge and soups are made from scratch daily. Staff is friendly and service is quick. Loved it here
The pastie was yummy!! The service was excellent! The restaurant is nice and big and tastefully decorated with cool maps of the great lakes.
Tried breakfast and lunch here this week. French toast and eggs for breakfast. Hearty portion and really good! Lunch was a meat pastie and side salad. Reasonable prices and wide ranging menu. 6 or 7 drip coffees to choose from. Free street parking and some parking just next to the building.
This cost 6 dollars bacon
No thanks
Absolutely delish! Their bakery items are the best!
A very comfortable, friendly place to have breakfast. Definately worth 4.5 star at the least!
Amazing food, good service, great find!
Really good breakfast sandwichs, comfort atmosphere, will be one of my go to spots when Im in the Soo.
Arrived right before the lunch rush. I thought it was sit down and order but you order at the register and meal is delivered to you. Prices a little high but the food was delicious and great portion size. Easy parking on the street. Its worth a visit.
Our Limestone FCU team went to Penny s Kitchen for breakfast prior to doing volunteer activities at Hospice. Breakfast was amazing!! I highly recommend the pancakes and anytime you stop here you have to try the sugar cookies! Thank you to Pennys Kitchens for the delicious food and amazing service!
Grilled Havard dill and tomatoe sandwich was excellent! Love the maps on the walls.
Always great food and coffee. One of our favorite stops when we are in town.
Wow, what a great place. Stopped for lunch with friends and we all agree we could meet here every week. Great food, friendly staff, clean. Everything I could want in a restaurant.
Great experience. Excellent service, clean restaurant and spectacular food. Wheelchair accessibility: No stairs. Easily accommodate a wheelchair for seating. Food : 5/5 |
They need to update their Google places to show that they are closed because of staff shortages.
Sort your staffing issues, annoyed I drove there this morning just to find you closed.
Center of the pasty was still cold, and gravy was tepid...
We just got deserts to go decent stuff . Cool looking place inside Food
Great atmosphere, super friendly, and very clean. The food is outstanding!
Loved this place so much, I wish I wasnt just visiting so I could come back every day! - Our hostess was so nice - I loved my smoothie...one of the best Ive ever had! (I can be very picky) - French toast and croissant were great! - Love the aesthetic <3
Ordered a cherry ring, blueberry strudel, and a cheese Danish. They all tasted delicious. They were chilled and she asked if we would like them heated and we said no. I would recommend them heated. We each got a Carmel Mocha Latte which were excellent. Best weve had in years.
Very fast and nice service! Cute little cafe and good food :)
Looking for a good breakfast since from out of state. Excellent food. Fast service. Charming little place. Will return again for breakfast!
Im more of a diner traditionalist. The kind of place where Flo comes to your table with a pot of stuff coffee, calls you sugar and takes your order...
It was ok. My boyfriend ordered egg and toast and I ordered a pastry (apple strudel). I asked for the pastry to be heated and it wasnt. Ended up that half of it was still frozen. Disappointed
I had their beef pasty and it s so good it s perfectly seasoned! They have the best filling and the gravy is to live for! I ate it in my car and realized I want more of the gravy so I sent my 11 year old daughter in to buy more gravy. She came out with two tubs FOR FREE! 5 star for Penny s amazing food and amazing service!
Food was ok and reasonably priced. It was the price gouging on soda and coffee. 3.50 for a cup of coffee and 3.50 for a small bottle of coke. Plus a credit card fee I was charged and used my debit card not a credit card. We could of ate at applebees for cheaper and dinner. I had a reuben and she had a simple chicken sandwich on a croissant with a small bag of chips that were also almost $4.00
Nice place to have a breakfast good food good menu.
Its like a great homemade meal , whatever you get , I have to say the BLT is my favorite
feels a little pricy compared to other options in the sault, but generally worth it. very much like their tuna melts and the sugar cookies are a must try at least once.
I will never set foot in here again. Never been to a restaurant that doesnt want to take your older. We waited at the table for 10mins while they looked at us and there phones. We were just waiting looking at them so we walk out after 15 mins. Not one word from them. I was excited to try them. Guess I will continue to go to Franks places And purely
First time here and we were impressed. My omelette was delicious and so was the smoothie. They had 2 options for GF toast. Nice clean atmosphere.. will return.
The server wasn t all that friendly and for the 45 minute wait for the food I have to say the corned beef Ruben was bland, the chicken and dumpling soup tasted out of a can which I was very disappointed in. The cherry strudel was phenomenal, however spending my entire lunch break waiting for food was unimpressive. Too many other good places.
I had more than a pleasant experience! This place warmed my heart in so many ways. There are still good people in this world. Kindness goes a long way. Pay it forward & support small business
The BEST pancakes I ve ever had. The eggs were cooked to perfection and the sourdough toast was amazing. Very clean and comfortable atmosphere with great service.
Very good breakfast!
Great food and smiling faces
Always enjoy eating here. Trendy 10/18/22 quiet downtown eating spot, great food and service. 12/29/23 last time here in 23, food was good, service was great. Trendy to some, but mediocre overall (as is Soo usual). Food : 4/5
Awesome service, food, and experience
Seriously, the best sweet treats in the Soo. The staff were all wonderful.
Fast, easy service. Food was good. Great selection of sandwiches, baked goods and desserts
I love this place. Its my favorite place to eat in Sault Ste Marie from sweet to savory. Great baked goods too. Friendly staff. If Im nitpicking anything, the espresso could use a bit of an upgrade.
Great place to eat!!
I had not been back to The Soo for decades, but heading back and experiencing the friendliness, the service and, of course, the food, I was teleported back to a simpler time when people were kinder, more thoughtful and cared about you as a person. In short, Pennys is an icon in the community with the amenities of an internet cafe, the down home cooking of your favorite local restaurant, sweet tooth satisfying cookies/pastries/cakes, and the comfortable feel of being home. Two full thumbs up.
Excellent breakfast food!
$3.25 for a flat fountain drink. Seriously?
A lovely place for even the pickiest of eaters! I got a few different dishes just to try them and I was not disappointed with any of them. I make a point to get a Ruben sandwich anywhere they are sold and this is the best Ruben Ive ever had, not dry, there was no overwhelming taste of sauerkraut, just thr right amount of everything. Out of towner here. But when I come back to town, I will definitely eat here.
Food good, wish the French dip was several days a week not just one
Great breakfast. And bathroom are super clean .
Okay for lunch. Little annoying they got both my sandwich wrong and dessert wrong but they fixed it. When sandwich came a second time it was not as described as a melt -cheese was cold slices but i just ate it. Maybe I got a new person today.
Love it here.
Nice upscale deli and deserts
Our first clue should have been the empty place during breakfast. Ordered an everything bagel sausage egg sandwich and got some week old Walmart bagel with a hockey puck sausage and some disgusting egg out of a carton. The 4.5 stars were definitely misleading. Need a new chef - the California surfer dude cooking in the back didn t cut it.
Pleasant for a breakfast, I still found some prices really high: $4.25 to add Nutella, 4.75 to add bacon to an omelette... The smoothie was very good.
Ordered French toast and they asked if I wanted cinnamon so I said yes. She did not say it would be stale old cinnamon roll French toast. Plus it came out room temp. The butter couldn t melt. It was so dry I could only eat a bite. Won t go back. For good French Toast go to Lockview Restaurant.
Came across this place when my grandmas appt at the nephrologist was canceled without us knowing. We drove an hour on a snowing midmorning to find this out. They were hungry, and I didnt feel like trying to deal with icky roads. The staff could be a little more friendly, but the food is very good. I ended up stopping here again a few weeks ago and was saddened by the gumbo. It was just gelatinous, hardly meat /veg. I understand i showed up 45 minutes before close, but it was like eating a bowl full of gravey. My green smoothly was very good, though. I will keep coming back, as I am in the area.
We chose this spot hoping to find good food reasonably priced and were blessed to find that and more. The staff was warm, friendly and very helpful. The restaurant is extremely clean. We chose the chicken pot pie, CB Reuben and Dinty Moore sandwiches and the three of us enjoyed it all. This is a true gem of an establishment! Make this your next meal out! Dietary restrictions: Gluten free options available
Comfortable atmosphere, amazing food, excellent service. Wonderful hidden gem!
Excellent place to stop when you are in town. Only odd thing is some lady thought she was too good for self serve coffee!
Really my only complaints are: the portions are not consistent, and most of the tables wobble! I do like the hometown diner feel, and there is a lot offered on the menu. We go to Pennys about once a month for breakfast, and Ive gotten lunch take out a handful of times. Im never actually disappointed, but it does seem like some meals are appropriately priced for the portion, and others are not.
Great spot to sit out of the rain, endless cup of coffee was perfect. Lunch for 2 was a great amount of food for a good price. 10/10 would come back Food : 5/5
Great breakfast, lots of fresh coffee choices, wonderful bakery too. Its a great place to start your day
Had breakfast and the Vegetable omelet was great. They prepared it with egg whites as I asked. The Mackinaw Island Fudge coffee was a pleasant surprise. The Sourdough toast were nice thick slices toasted just right. I really like Pennys Kitchen.
Absolutely fantastic place for Bakery and for breakfast I was able to eat on a couch just like at home the people there were very friendly I would highly recommend visiting this place if you are in Sault Ste Marie Michigan
Great menu, friendly service and even some gluten free options. Penny s knows how to hire and keep the right people because both times we ate there in the two days we visited Soo, we had great service. The portions are huge at breakfast, I couldn t finish my omelette! And they have gf, cinnamon raisin toast. If you know, you know. What a treat. It s comfy, has a full bakery case (not gf) and a full selection of lattes, cappuccinos, mochas and smoothies. I would definitely recommend!!!
What a great dining experience! Friendly staff, delicious coffee and fresh ingredients all for a reasonable price. The restaurant was crowded, most tables were full so we expected to have a long wait. We were surprised when the food came out right away. Vegetable lovers omelette was filled with fresh veggies and melty cheese. Yum! Homemade breads and freshy brewed coffee. I would happily eat breakfast here every day.
Food didnt meet the expectations of hype. Was very common and bland. Quick food sandwiches would sate your appetite for half the price. Food
7 dif flavors of self serve bottomless coffee! Eggs were great, sausage, toast, pancakes. All was perfect!
Penny s kitchen is the little cafe that could! The menu offered here is extensive, really anything you could want. I was in for breakfast and ordered the hungry man which is two pancakes, bacon, sausage, eggs and toast. Everything was delicious. My boyfriend orders the Santa Fe filled croissant. The waitress was outstanding! She was taking orders, running food, making coffee and smoothie drinks.
Awesome. Place
Great food and bakery
We loved Pennys Kitchen. Clean restaurant. Hot fresh food. Friendly service. Clean bathrooms. Just what we needed before visiting the Soo Locks. Parking: Good size free parking next to the restaurant. Pay for parking across the street at a public lot.
First thing, as an out of towner we werent aware you have to order, before sitting down or you wont eat. We sat there a few minutes nobody said anything to us. We seen someone ekse do it, and went up to ask them. The food was quick, very good portions. I wouldnt hesitate to go back on one of our trips back to the Soon.
We stopped in for a quick bite and enjoyed delicious pasties with gravy! Friendly folks and a nice atmosphere as well!
Counter person was a bit short when asked about gluten free and vegetarian pasties. Mac and cheese was ok. I was told by my sister that the gluten free brownie (or was it cookies?) were AMAZING. Several vegetarian and gluten free options. Vegetarian options: It was great to see more than one vegetarian option to choose from. Dietary restrictions: They have a good selection of gluten free items.
DO NOT EAT HERE!!!! waitress was argumentative when I asked about the watered down milk and when I asked if I could get my toast toasted instead of warmed up bread. Chefs potatoes were ice cold and eggs drowned in oil. HUGE waste of money !!
Great place for amazing breakfast foods! Good prices. Fast service!
Tasted great, but I left hungry. Good place for old people with a small appetite. $10.75
Really had our hopes up for lunch today based on prior experiences at this establishment. Food has always been good until today. My wife ordered the split pea and ham soup and it came out looking like baby food. Just lumps of peas. I ordered the French dip..half was fine..the other half of the sandwich literally had one slice of beef on it. I feel like this restaurant had established a great reputation and now is starting to cut corners. Too bad.
Expensive but its all good.
Never have I felt more unwelcome in a restaurant
Wheelchair accessibility: There is more than enough space for a wheelchair and is ramped inside. Which is great in the winter months. I have a family member who uses a wheelchair. Food
Food was delicious...all We ate an all we got to take home!
Ive eaten an omelette here a few times in the last month and it has always been done on time, service is friendly, and it was tasty. Nice and thick homemade bread used for toast. Today I ordered the Hungry mans and when I got back to work to eat. There was no butter or syrup for the french toast. I went to try the french toast without syrup anyway and when I took a bite it was wet. I flipped the piece of french toast over and theres still wet, raw egg on the one side.
Great spot and breakfast. Somehow resisted all the great looking baked goods. Will be back Dietary restrictions: Keto, Atkins
The Reuben was delicious, could of used a bit more Russian dressing. The corned beef was tender.
I love going to the Sault for a doctors appointment or to go shopping, because I get to stop and have lunch or get a treat from Pennys Kitchen.
Good food walking distance from the hospital.
I came in after a very hard day of travel, and I can t express enough how kind the whole staff was. They send me off with muffin tops for my parents who were on their way, and I can t express how much they turned a bad day around. Their Oreo brownie was amazing. Very dense and chocolaty. I would recommend the Hazel nut latte!
Love all the old maps on the walls and the laid back vibe. Their sugar cookies are the best! Parking: Lots of spots across the street for 2hours free. Also street parking, same. Wheelchair accessibility: Ramp to go in and door has delayed stay open to give you time to get it.
Great choice of different types of foods, desserts and drinks. Free wifi is always a plus.
Great place for breakfast.
Excellent food prepared fresh with the customer in mind. A must stop.
A very long ticket time. Order before 10, food arrived at 11:15. Stale bread for sandwiches.
Good place to eat but a little pricey...just like everything else lately
Great breakfast and fantastic service!
Prices at Pennys have become too high for me to continue going there.
Great food and excellent service!
Way overpriced and online menu is out of date. 2 cookies, 2 chips, 2 cokes, and 2 pot pies for $37.50. Cookies, chips, and bottled soda each cost over $3 a piece. Small deflated pot pies for $8.50.
The dark-haired gal was extremely nice and helpful. The food was a bit costly for what we got. And the pancakes werent cooked all the way BUT the coffee was super yummy & the atmosphere was great.
Nicely done. Great staff. Past that, a bit overated. 2 eggs took 30 minutes and were just common fare. No big deal...
The sandwiches were on fantastic sliced bread, so yummy!
You better be hungry when you go in for breakfast because they re stuffed croissants are huge!
Always yummy
I got a cheese sandwich with whole grain bread, it came well done but cheese was really stringy and not fully melted. No problems with the bread. I got a Oreo Brownie that was good with fudge on it, and it saved my meal. It was so cold I had to dig my fork in, but that wasnt bad. They have vegetarian options which I find helpful as a picky eater.
Great food, decent prices. We went for breakfast/lunch. Everyone was pleased with either their sandwiches, soup, or breakfast items. Everything super fresh and from scratch. Really friendly staff and they definitely took care of you. Highly recommend!
Great food and service
Loved this quaint little restaurant!! Great breakfast!! Huge helpings!! Definitely will hit this spot again !!
Great selection of good food.
Pretty pricy, but the food was worth it. My iced latte was great too!
Delicious coffee!
I had the French Boule for breakfast. It was great. I wish that I could have tried more. Everything looked good.
Great place for breakfast, and great coffee
Food was delicious. Generous portions. Many sandwichs, salads, drinks to choose from.
Such a variety! Everything is tasty and it is very clean and bright.
Wow. Awesome Sunday Brunch. People in our group loved the Cinnamon French Toast, a custom smoothie, the eggs/hash browns, and the sausage biscuits. But what makes this place amazing is the service. Our server was Jenny, who has personality plus. Of course she was fast and efficient, but it was her sense of humor and her instant connection with customers that make the Pennys experience special. Great job, Jen and the Pennys crew.
Good breakfast
One of the best breakfasts weve eaten! Awesome! Order by menu at counte, fresh cooked and brought to your table, tasted very fresh and homemade. Breakfast served all day. Thanks! Well be back@
Sunday brunch was freshly cooked and excellent at this bright cheery restaurant with sunny service!
Great breakfast..full menu
Fantastic food. Friendly service. Will visir again when we come back to the UP
Oh what a gem. Amazing baked goods and the sandwiches were fantastic.
Had Breakfast there Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. Food was great. Accuracy and courtesy was off. Saturday ordered the low carb special with meat only, no veggies. A short pregnant lady with dark hair brought me my food which was loaded with veggies. I said, I ordered this with meat, no veggies. She says, Well thats the way it comes and walks away. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? WHY IS THIS PERSON THERE?!?!? The other lady that took my order did make it right but I really dont need the pregnant girls attitude when Im there spending my money. Monday my wife ordered 2 eggs over well and they came scrambled. Not a huge deal and my wife ate them because we didnt want to wait for another order. I know in the first case the order was put in correct. I tend to believe the order was put in correct in the second case too because the lady read it back to us. So maybe the cook isnt paying attention?!? Either way, I dont need attitude when my food is wrong. Hopefully next time my wife and I come for breakfast, the rude pregnant girl will be fired on on maternity leave.....
The Swiss Miss breakfast bowl and Mackinac Island fudge coffee were delicious.
Food was incredible. Staff was so friendly.
Pennys Kitchen serves breakfast all day. The menu offers a variety of coffees, sandwiches, as well, several different types of salads , meat entries, and a vegetarian menu. Plus, delicious pastries, fresh baked cookies & several other desserts. Very open area and many tables to choose from if dinning in...
The prices may get you but the food is great. Theyve got a good shelf in the back.
Food was great and so was the atmosphere. Just dont take too long signing your credit card receipt or the staff might give you a hard time for your whole visit
Check your order before you leave. Ordered a sandwich with no tomato. Not only did it have tomato it was loaded with guacamole, which does not come with nor belong on this kind of sandwich. First visit here in a really long time for similar reasons. Guess it hasnt changed.
Breakfast was delicious! The staff was funny and great company
Fast service and back to being busy, I didnt even order the daily special and still got my food quick!
Great food. Great service.
This place is a deli with great reviews and a huge board with luscious sandwich choices. We were all geared up for a delicious Reuben or or something similar... Sadly, we came on a Sunday. The place was filled with locals, so we were excited to try it, but on Sundays they serve only breakfast all day long!!! We came about noon and we had already eaten breakfast earlier at the hotel. We were sorely disappointed that we couldnt order a non-breakfast style lunch.
Very good service and the meat omelette was delicious.
Sandwiches and salads were very good. Nice place.
Great breakfast.
Terrible, burned pancakes. Super unfriendly
Excellent food, hugh portions. Great service. Well be back next week
pancakes, bacon and eggs were excellent. love the selection of coffee.
Absolutely delicious breakfast! Best food ever....
Awesome food and helpful employees. Thank you
Good basic breakfast, friendly servers, free wifi and unlimited coffee
Loved it.
Great food and service!
Friendly fun place for lunch with a diverse mrnu. Ate in and then took pasties home. Great lunch location.
Very tasty sandwiches
Burnt bacon and toast. Over easy eggs almost over hard. Very disappointed. Coffee was good though.
Chicken Pot Pie was delicious, as usual...
Open atmosphere. Great variety of food and drink. Would definitely go here again.
Super cute place and delicious food, friendly service. Quite an enjoyable experience!
Egg breakfast was delicious!
Outstanding breakfasts, and well worth the visit !
Horrible service. I dont know what the food is like. The service was so bad we left.
Drove 40 minutes to eat breakfast at Pennys because of the wonderful reviews. It took 20 minutes to seat us (fine, theyre busy we understand.) Sat at our table ignored for another 30 minutes, asked for help twice. Eventually just walked out. Always nice to waste an hour waiting while on vacation...
Sour dough pancakes to die for.
Good prices and great food
What an amazing hidden gem in the SOO. Amazing food and bakery!
Local Deli / Sandwich / Coffee Shope feel. Fabulous food and bakery items including pies, cookies, and cakes! This is a MUST if you are touring the Sault St. Marie area. Half a sandwich and salad - good sized portions - fast - courteous - and LOVED the local ambiance
Good service and food was good
The food was fantastic. Since we were new we didnt know what to do or order. Might have helped if someone would have guided us. Great fast service, we got the food hot and quick.
Amazing sandwiches! Fast, friendly customer service. Huge menu, even had gluten free breads. Will be back for breakfast soon.
Delicious food and friendly service!
It is for establishments such as this google should have a premier button or the ability to ad an extra star. Amazing food and coffee. Great atmosphere. If you just want a quick stop or if you want to hang with friends in a 1990s Friends episode vibe this would be the place. 9 stars for the smiles and politeness of the staff. Adding a Bonus star for the clean restroom. Well done Pennys Kitchen
This was the highlight of our color tour post covid. We loved the food, staff and atmosphere. Cant wait to come back and have a pastie! See you soon.
First timers beware- theres no directions anywhere that say to order at counter or seat yourself or get you own drinks. Food is usually good tho. Just over priced considering you have to seat yourself, get your own drinks, and walk up to counter to order. Not great since its a maze to walk through to get to the counter with the way they have tables set up. Boyfriend said it was the worst coffee Ive ever had.
excellent service !! delicious sandwich and coffee !!!
Our favorite stop when we come to Kewadin!! made me a chicken ranch wrap!! So delicious!!! Fresh shaved chicken, staff and owners!! Always so kind!! A+++
Very good service and my BLT was wonderful!
Absolutely loved the staff. Awesome food!
The food is always good, great selections, big portions. Friendly staff, good service. We always enjoy our meals here.
Pasty was old and very dry. Super expensive. 2 pasties and 2 pops almost $20. Not worth it
chicken Pot pie was amazing
Super sweet staff. Lots of options to choose from. Also lots of homemade desserts. Super cozy place. Too bad they close at 6 but they have so much great food its worth it to come early.
good
Best cafe food in town
Always a pleasure here. Little bit of a price creep, but still good. Would recommend for lunch or a nice hangover breakfast as you chug their coffee.
My all time favorite breakfast and lunch joint in the Soo! Does not disappoint! Their food is very appetizing, and staff is very friendly. Wish there were more places like this back where we live. Highly recommend.
Stopped in for lunch and it was a great decision. Excellent menu and food, very friendly services and warm ambiance.
