We had a wonderful lunch from Cup of the Day for CU Local Lunch! The sandwiches and wraps are always delicious!
In celebration of my aunt’s 77th birthday, my 85-year-old mom and I took her to Sault Ste Marie. After visiting the Tower of History, we decided to go to a local coffee shop and settled on Cup of the Day. Business hours posted online indicated the café was open until 5pm. It was 4:30pm when we walked through the door and were immediately met with contempt from the owner, who was sitting at a table in the customer side of the café. No other customers were present. Near the door of the back area, which was closed to customers, sat a girl who appeared to be a tween. She was not welcoming either and stared at us intently while we placed our order. My mom ordered first – an iced mocha decaf. My aunt ordered next – a pour over decaf. I then ordered a mocha. With each order, the owner grew more irritated. After paying for the order, the owner slammed a cup down on the counter in front of my aunt. I reminded the owner that she ordered a pour over, and he replied in a curt voice that the café has drip coffee, it is the same thing, and she can get the coffee herself from the drip pot. I told my aunt we should just leave, but to avoid confrontation she proceeded to fill her cup. Once we had our coffees, we exited the café and sat at one of their sidewalk tables. In addition to the rudeness, we felt the coffee was subpar. That was the tipping point for my mom. She went back inside the café and told the owner that her iced mocha decaf did not taste good. He then took a drink of her iced mocha, said nothing was wrong with it, and tried handing it back to her. He told her he sells hundreds of these a day. She left her iced mocha with the owner, came back outside and told us what transpired. Something seriously wrong here. She didn’t ask for a refund, so I then went to talk to the owner. As I stepped inside the owner said in a loud cross voice that there is nothing wrong with my mom’s iced mocha. I told him that none of us liked our coffees, but we wouldn’t have said anything if not for the extremely rude way he had treated us. I said I didn’t know why he was angry that we came in for coffee, maybe that it was a half hour before closing. He just became angrier and more argumentative. I asked that he refund my mom for the coffees. He went around to the cash register, took out a ten dollar bill and slammed it on the counter. He then ordered me to get out of the café and started yelling at me – get out, get out, go go go. I rejoined my aunt and mom at the sidewalk table. Within minutes the owner and the young girl came outside, took the empty table and chair next to us inside, and told us the café closes at 5pm. A minute later he came back, said we are no longer customers since he gave us our money back, and ordered us to leave right then. As we drove away the owner and the young girl made faces at us. What a strange and disrespectful way to treat customers. Made the mistake of not reading Google reviews prior to our visit. Had we read the reviews first, we would have gone elsewhere. From reading the reviews we learned that our experience was not an isolated incident – which makes it hard to understand how the café has been in business for many years. We won’t be back of course, and my mom said she won’t visit Sault Ste Marie again either after enduring his wrath. What is abundantly clear is that this person should not be in customer service and should not be an ambassador for the city. Our faith in humanity was restored the following day when we visited a coffee shop in Brimley and this time were immediately met by a very outgoing and welcoming barista. Coffee was subpar here as well, but the customer service was top notch. We did not complain about our coffee, and purchased other merchandise to take with us. We will be sure to visit this coffee shop again next time we are in the area – not for the coffee, but for the exceptional customer service. * Updated 9/20/24 From his response, it appears it was my face mask that angered him. As with other negative reviews, his response was snide and based on a fabricated scenario.
Me and my mom went in for a snack we got the pumpkin cream cheese muffin we got a little ways through the muffin and found mold in the bottom! We then went to go tell them and they only offered us the other muffin no refund but over all it was okay.
You can get a wonderful Reuben sandwich here. All sandwiches are tasty. Salads are fresh and yummy. Nice selection of coffee and teas. Bonus: you can pick up gift items while you are here! Such a selection I can't even begin to cover the items! Don't miss out.
Ate the best breakfast bagels in my life here, along with a delicious plain cappuccino. On another visit, I had the peppered chicken BLT wrap. Every sandwich is made fresh and on the spot. This was delicious. The kiddo also enjoyed her chai tea.
Lunch after a long drive. We were hoteling near by and needed a quick bite. This was perfect little spot. We had a larger than normal order and the girl handled our order perfectly. I got a club and the meat was piled on! Thank you. We spent about 50 for our lunch for 3.
As we were driving around looking for food, we spotted this adorable place! I had a great conversation with the owner, and talked about how they have stayed in business for so long, and how they are working hard to survive the pandemic. The food was exactly what I wanted! This was our first time here, and we felt like regulars! We took our food to go since we had our dogs with us. The bread was delicious, the sandwiches hit the spot perfectly! We didn't have any coffee, but I heard amazing things from others inside about how good it was! I was so glad we randomly decided to stop here for a bite!
A quaint little coffee shop that serves amazing breakfast sandwiches! The latte is on point too. Definitely a must stop when you are UP in Sault Ste. Marie.
Great place. Cheapest coffee in town!
We just stopped in for smoothies.
I didnt expect to be wowed by a cup of coffee (New York Roast), best Ive had in a long time. Ive made plans to go back for lunch and coffee again soon.
Very good
The food is absolutely delicious and the service was wonderful. Will definitely be going back!
It hit the spot. The staff was very helpful
Always enjoy the food there
We will be back!
This has been my go to coffee shop/lunch destination for years! Always great service and always great coffee/food. Still the best. Still a buck.
Great coffee shop and always good experience, even if disagree politically. And exceptional sandwiches I might add ;-) btw, I never rate more than a 4. Leaves room for improvement... 3/22/23 actually shopping next door at the Foundary, supporting local business. Awesome little shop with great misc
Great food, great value, awesome staff.
By far the best sandwiches and coffee you ll find in the Sault. Tony consistently provides the best customer service and amazing food. Seeing his kids play at a table and their drawings on the wall makes the place feel super welcoming. Shop Sault local!
Yes! Score!
Delicious soup
Loved this place. We did the Soo locks tour and the young lady in the ticket area told us about this place and she was right on the money. Everything about this place was GREAT. Sidewalk table and they catered to our dog that goes everywhere we go. Loved their kind hospitality.
Nice cozy atmosphere, like a small coffee shop. Has nice assortment of t shirts and knick nacks to browse through. Has a back area for extra seating. I had a terrific caramel latte, it was very good, as well as the Italian chicken ciabatta sandwich. It was quite big. Thankfully, I was starving that day. Parking: Park where you can find room. I parked around the corner, walking a short distance. Kid-friendliness: Nice atmosphere, I wouldnt let kids run around, but there are fun things to look at.
I didnt try the food but the caramel latte was a perfect balance of sweet and coffee. It was peaceful and homey, eclectic in a way. A place that didnt feel sterile like many modern cafes. A lounge area, some merchandise to purchase. Loved it!
I got the big apple sandwich. It was great, try the hobanara jam on it . Service was fast AF . Glad we tryed it :)
The people at the counter were sweet and a kind. They gave me a great recommendation for food. The food they recommended was amazing, and the coffee was delicious. Definitely will come back when I visit Michigan again.
Cup of the Day is great! Coffee is always hot and fresh. The other drinks offered are all great as well. The food is delicious with large portions and very fairly priced. Service is always friendly and quick. Thanks Tony!
Hell of a sandwich!! Great flavor!! Will be back for sure
Tony and his staff are always friendly they treat you like family welcoming you with a smile and hot cup of coffee soon as you come in the door coffees always fresh panini sandwiches are always fantastic Definitely worth the visit.
Stopped in recently. Great coffee. Great prices.
Tasted alright a bit expensive especially if there is going to be a tip line in a sandwich place. Cup seems to be referring to coffee instead of soup they did have two kinds of soup though but really was thinking it was a soup shop. Update thank you for a response telling me I must be wrong. And yes I do find many places here do charge much too much for a sandwhich
Tomato bisque soup!!!! Best ever! Nice quiet place to eat lunch or have a cup of coffee.
Love this Local Coffee shop and there food, they are so down to earth.
Good food pleasant staff. Food is good quality for a fair price.
Passing through town from Arizona and stopped here for lunch. Great Chicken Panini...thank you!
Great lunch again! Had the Italian Wedding Soup and Caesar Salad. Coffee was so good we enjoyed a refill with a blueberry Muffin.
Went in to grab a salad. The owner had their children there, who treated it like home. Added to the atmosphere and I enjoyed seeing it. Good great and reasonably priced.
First I will say the chai latte was fantastic and the spicy thai peanut wrap was delicious. Unfortunately that is where the good review ends. I fully expect the scathing response from the owner that I am sure to earn based on the other owner responses left here. We entered the shop at 345/4pm to buy a cup coffee and to our suprise the coffee was cold. After bringing this to the attention of whomever was behind the counter, the response was inappropriate for anyone working in customer service regardless of their tenure and years of service. We were told there is nothing wrong with the coffee and hundreds of cups are sold there everyday and as for the coffee being cold, that is because the end of day was in 20 minutes (even though the google hours say they are open until 5). They did try to make it right by giving us a chai tea latte but we threw the rest of the money in the tip jar as we prefer good customer service over free items. (Im sure there will be some sort of juvenile rant with name calling in the response). Being in customer service and a small business owner most of my life I found this surprising as your customers should be the focus and if you have to start a pot of coffee or two an hour or so before you close to keep something avaliable then that is what you do. I guess that is the difference between the mindset of an entrepreneur and a manager. I digress, however, good food, cold coffee after 345 apparently and inconsistent customer service.
My friend left a review that covered our experience nicely......the dirty chai was good. The coffee was cold and gross. The customer service was horrible. The shop owner is snide and argumentative. Just look at his responses to other people who have left him bad reviews. I have a right to review our experience as it happened, and I do not appreciate this guy trying to intimidate myself and others if they give a bad review, because of how he treats his customers. I prefer good customer service and I would give this place zero stars for customer service if it was an option on Google. (This review is a few days past our visit as we were traveling and I am now catching up on my reviews of the places we visiting while in UP)
Excellent place to get a sandwich! Delicious Roy Club Panini, and the staff was very friendly! Thank you!
Good coffee, dated decor
I ve been to all the coffee shops in town and keep coming back to this one! Quick service, super friendly, and consistently good coffee. Definitely recommend stopping in.
Yummy sandwiches with awesome extra treats. Loved all the chocolate covered espresso beans! The sandwich bread was very high quality and flavor.
Nice family run cafe in downtown Sault Ste Marie. Love stopping in during the fall season for the tasty soups, sandwiches and coffee. Definitely a family favorite.
Great professional staff always friendly and the food is top tier
Great tasting food. Good variety of food. Friendly service. Great coffee, smoothies and tea. Great location downtown, a small walk from the hospital or the Soo Locks.
The food was just meh, not bad, but I just personally dont care for it.
Best in town
Fantastic soup, espresso and service!
Great atmosphere. And the coffee is great too!
Great local coffee shop, with some of the best smoothies ever!
Very good customer service and great menu! Coffee is excellent!
Great place! Wonderful owner. Very patriotic
Friendly service, amazing food! Love the Bubble Teas!
Gross food, gross owner
Staff was great...coffee was perfect. We will be back. Yum! P.S they have bubble tea.
Great lunch. Bowl of yummy beef barley soup and super fresh salad with fresh dressings .
Great food and LOVED that there were multiple vegetarian options! Service was friendly and quick even during the lunch rush, sandwiches were large and delicious, and the bubble tea was yummy. Highly recommend and will definitely go again!
The best chicken Caesar wrap ever.
Great food and service
Tony and his staff do a great job. They genuinely love people and want them to enjoy their experience. They are timely in service, affordable, and tasty. Freshly sliced meat everyday, homemade dressings, quality ingredients for both food and drinks. Save yourself money and your tastebuds will be thanking you for all coffee drinks too! There is no better iced latte I ve ever had and pricing is far better than the chains. It s outstanding, there s no comparison! Great family, you ll very much enjoy.
Was able to grab a great cup of coffee and a really tasty sandwich here. We sat at small bistro table out front with our dogs. The owner took great care of us.
Didn t even get a chance to order. The place did not smell so great. Went in for coffee with the kiddos, and while we were checking the lounge area out for snacks the worker had an attitude and told us the lounge area was closed and could he help us. So we bounced and headed to Bird s Eye. Should have gone there to start with.
Friendly service, great coffee, and good breakfast sandwiches and bagels. We will return.
$1 for a decent cup of coffee. Cant beat that!
Excellent food and drink as always. One of our favorite places to frequent, when were in the area each year. Tony is the best!
Although I love supporting local businesses and have been recommending this spot to all my visitors I will not return and cant recommend any longer. We went here to celebrate a special occasion. After my father (recently diagnosed with IPF) noticed the owner glaring at him for coughing he tried to share his diagnosis to help stem his fears. The owner proceeded to treat my dad with complete disrespect and contempt stating my dad better be okay since his (the owners) kids were there. We were social distanced, my dad wore his make except when eating and drinking. After this we left. My dad felt terrible and after his new diagnosis is terminal he is emotionally drained. This is not how you treat people. Shame on you.
Gone there periodically over the years and when I cross the bridge I try and make Cup of the Day a must stop. Tony has been there for 20 plus years with delicious sandwiches great soup and a nice variety of coffees, its no wonder he has maintained longevity. Kudos to him and staff.
Best coffee in the Upper Peninsula, and sandwiches to,super fresh.
Its an undoubtedly political space bc of various paraphernalia and whatnot, but hey, this is an election year. The menu was gigantic for what looked like an operation run by like two people, and my beef peanut spicy wrap thingy was very tasty. Also, never had a soda quite like the guy cooked up in there, I think it had milk in it. Awesome. There was some stuff about how ineffective masks were by the door, but honestly they were good points and its not like people were expected to take their masks off when inside or something. Long story short, nice local spot.
This place was fun and adorable inside, huge food / drink selection and friendly staff. I enjoyed it.
Great coffee...great muffins...great service ! Thank you
Great shop, friendly faces. Fresh fresh fresh! Had a great cup club sandwich. Clean, inviting and respects choice. We will be returning! Highly recommend!
Nice friendly environment and the sandwich and cappochino was great.
Great choice of drinks(coffee) and quite tasty
Very Dirty. They could care less if youre there
Walked in and wanted some breakfast sandwiches and the guy in there looked annoyed with us and told us of we wanted breakfast theres a place down the road. He could have served us and made a bunch of money but instead was rude and told us to go somewhere else. **Updated - We were in a hurry and wanted some breakfast sandwiches. Menu has breakfast sandwiches, I wanted a bagel with cheese and bacon, no egg. I dont understand why the owner says they dont serve breakfast when the menu clearly has breakfast sandwiches.
Best soup, salads and sandwiches in the area
Great food and great service!
Cup of the Day is literally my favorite place to be in the Soo. Thank you, Tony, and staff, for making me feel so loved and welcomed. You truly made my day And the orange tea was delicious! God bless you & your family!!
Great smoothies and even better petitions to sign here!! Thanks Tony
Delicious coffee and friendly service.
Warm with friendly smiles very cozy little spot with great tasting drinks and yummy treats I highly recommend this place. They always make you feel like they know you.
Hate coffee
Great sandwiches and coffee
As you can see from the response the owner is a bit of a jerk
Its ok..
Tony always makes up fresh tasty sandwiches & the kids love the ice cream. On a cool day we enjoy the soup too. Youd be silly not to get some coffee...
Best sandwich around.
It was not very good. The service was poor and my coffee was cold. I would go elsewhere.
Cozy fun atmosphere. Sandwiches are outta this world. You gotta try it.
The muffins were a bit dry and the Paradise smoothie was very bitter and tasted sour. Not my Cup Of Tea.
It was fine.service was good, coffee & hot chocolate was good.cute little place.didnt try the food or ice cream.
Great menu, good coffee at very reasonable prices!
Fun, quaint place for excellent food. Dont miss it when your in the Soo.
California Panini! Excellent!
Best Coffee in town. Only a buck! Fantastic sandwichs and wraps!
The coffee was great. The owner was better. We have great conversations. And then he showed me his basement.

Fast friendly and a great cup of coffee
Food was excellent. Portion sizes were fantastic for the price.
Open at 7am Mon to Fri , dollar coffees, great lunch menu
Good coffee and food; and very friendly people. Will definitely come back.
Great food! Friendly staff with the owner on site who helped me pick out a french press with great advice!
The girl serving was extremely kind and hospitable but the owner was a bit rude. Very good coffee and the other baked goods looked delicious. Atmosphere was bland and all fluorescent lighting...not a warm space but great food and drinks.
Came for breakfast to a closed joint. Weak.
Great service, impressive menu for a downtown cafe and fantastic environment. I stopped in during a business trip for a quick sandwich and was impressed with their variety of warm beverages. Not just your typical Coffee and Cocoa.
Excellent coffee and food. I highly recommend eating her. The frappe is excellent and the staff is nice.
It is awesone
