Ernie's Coffee Shop in Sault Ste. Marie

We just left Ernies, my son had the Octopus and I had the Mary Blue Chicken burger. The food was amazing, the bartender Jack was impressive. Wonderful service and food. We will be returning!

Much more than just a coffee shop. The food is great and the atmosphere offers a unique and eclectic experience.

Recently stayed in downtown Sault Ste Marie. Selected Ernie s Coffee Shop for dinner based on its proximity to our accommodations and its positive rating on Google and not a lot of other information to go on. Happy to report that Ernie s far exceeded my expectations. Yes, you can get a burger there. Which was expected for a Coffee Shop. But what I did not expect was the number of European dishes and cocktails on the menu. For dinner we opted for the European fare which was very good. I would recommend Ernie s Coffee Shop for dinner. I would also recommend you save room for the Spanish Cheesecake!

We loved our trip here. We went with our friends who live in SSM, and we brought our 4 kids along with us. Staff were great. Lovely cozy atmosphere. And most importantly, the cocktails, appetizers, mains, and dessert were all fantastic.

If you are in the Sault you must eat here. The vibe is so relaxing & the food is top notch!

Delicious. The highlights were Rhubarb margarita with homemade compote, caesar salad with smoky bacon bits, cheeseburger, and gnocchi. Service was friendly and great atmosphere -hidden gem!

Very cool place. They took over an old diner and maintained the old decor but elevated the menu. Excellent cocktails and good food. Everything was delicious except the fried chicken. The skin lacked the thickness and crunch and had a noticeable fish taste thinking they fried the chicken in the same oil? The Gnocchi was big and fluffy but tasted like Campbell mushroom soup. The starters were much stronger as was the Spanish cheesecake for dessert. Overall, a very good Sault option despite a few missteps.

Honeymooning with my husband (were from the States), asked my cousin for some dinner suggestions in the Soo and Ernies was on the list. We gave it a go and truly I wish I could import it back home with us. We didnt have a reservation so were seated at the bar which ended up being delightful. The bartender? A gem. He is constitutionally unable to miss. The drinks were maybe the best Ive had anywhere? I dont know, Im shook. He, himself? 1000% charm, a treat to chat with, and makes the best espresso martini Ive ever had. The drinks, outstanding. The food? Stunning! We shared the asparagus lyonnaise and I had the meatballs which like...if you like meatballs you will be in meatball heaven. I like meatballs and I was transported. The lil crispy bread that comes with them...are they joking with this? Its so good. The asparagus, by the way, also gorgeous. I ate it all when my husband got up to go to the washroom. Dessert--he had the chocolate mousse and I had the Spanish cheesecake. Actually he had one bite of the mousse and I had the chocolate mousse and the Spanish cheesecake by myself because they made me feral. Anyway 5/5 cant wait to be back next year so I can eat here again and beg them for a St Louis outpost or something.

Food was terrific but the fish excellent but unexpectedly European tiny size. Perfects a warning would have served well. Left my appetite unsatisfied. On the other hand the chicken was generous and more than satisfying. And no bread was offered - so fingers and a knife had to substitute as a pusher. Poor etiquette. Small points.

Fantastic dining experience in every way! From the best drinks ever- Chocolate Espresso Martini & Creamsicle, to the shrimp on toast, the Ernie Burger, fries, Caesar salad, gnocchi, and risotto, the flavours were superb! Hats off to the creative and talented chef/owner and the friendly, efficient staff! A very memorable experience in a lively and comfortable setting!

This restaurant is spectacular. I couldnt ask for better food. The staff is friendly but not overbearing. The chef knows exa what he is doing. My wife and I have been going for years. The fried chicken and the fried chicken sandwich are the best Ive had. The caeser salad is always fresh and has a distinct flavor (the boiled egg is even perfect) the shrimp toast was better than most apps Ive had. The menu is definitely pricy as far as far as diners/coffee shops go, but this place is so much more than that. Its fine dining quality in a comfy atmosphere for a reasonable price. Also the cheesecake is the best Ive ever had. My wife and I ordered some for the wedding party at our wedding because we wanted tbe best dessert in the Sault are our wedding. Ernies is the diamond in the rough of Sault Ste Marie. Im hungry writing this.

I just ate here last night and it s the best place Ive ever been too. The atmosphere and the food were absolutely amazing. Im pretty sure you could order anything on the menu and be blown away Everytime. I will definitely be coming back

Everything s great but this is the third time in the past week where it says they are open online and I drive there and it s randomly closed.

Out of this world good! The oysters, shrimp toast, charred broccoli and chicken sandwiches were all top notch!!! We left Ernie s bursting at the seams we were so full, but we didn t want to waste one bite. Highly recommend!

The service is and always has been great... The food was and is quite good. The Ernie burger is not the burger I knew as a younger person anymore. Its not the same Ernies. Which isnt to say the food isnt good... Im just not sure the price is. $18 for just a burger is not something that I will be doing again anytime soon. There are a few items on the menu that I found interesting to try... Maybe if/when prices go down. Not if what I hear coming April 1st is true. Parking: Theres no parking lot, you have to park along the street or risk being towed by the city/business owners around the diner.

Best chicken sandwich in the Soo, hands down! Fries are amazing too! Ive had it countless times now and still crave it all the time. If Ernies was on Skip the Dishes Id really be in trouble. Great work guys.

Everyone raves about the good food so decided to book reservations ahead like 5 days and even confimed was coming on day of booking and get there at proper time 7:30pm as per reservations and place is packed and no room or reserved table for us! Dont bother booking reservations on line because they dont honor the reservations!

My 3 brothers and I went for lunch today and had Ernies Burgers and the Classic Chicken Sandwich along with fries and a Caesar salad. Everything was fantastic - super flavourful! The Caesar was the best I have ever had. The coffee was also excellent - maybe a Costa Rican estate coffee? One brother had the Spanish Cheesecake for desert and loved it. You gotta eat here.

Really cozy the second you walk in, low lighting very friendly and chill staff. Felt like walking into a family members house. The food was excellent, homemade with love.

I d really like to rate this place 6.9 but the ratings only go up to 5. Best spot in the Soo. I d personal recommend the Cam Special, but I m biased. Cam Special is great especially for groups of 2-4 or newbies to Ernie s. (If the servers don t know what the Cam Special is, just tell John and he knows the play) Fritto fritto fritto!!! To the moon!!

I ve eaten here a couple of times now and the food is just amazing. Everything I ve tried has been a home run. The chicken sandwich was great and my previous meal was also outstanding. It is son nice to see a gem like this in the Soo. Hopefully the community will discover this great restaurant and support them with their business downtown.

Unbelievable meal, the blue cheese chicken wings are the best in town. The presentation of the meal was so professional. Service was top shelf, friendly, polite and accommodating. Highly recommend you try Ernies again for the full diner experience. 5 Stars

Everything was fantastic. Food was incredible, smoked salmon plate with the beet and dill salad. Fantastic combo. Burger was legendary as well. The place really fosters a nice cozy place to get to know someone. Great cocktails offered up by the bartender as well. Will be coming back.

What a hidden gem! The restaurant is situated in a beautifully preserved diner, complete with homey interior, eclectic dish ware, and jukeboxes (unfortunately non-functional) at each table. Waitstaff was friendly and knowledgable, and the kitchen offered to create a special dish to accommodate my dairy allergy. Above and beyond service! The food itself was marvelous oysters were perfect, chicken was moist with deliciously crisp skin, and the vinaigrette on the salad was good enough to drink. Highly recommend dinner at Ernie s!

I first came a year ago and now stop in every time I am in town. Order from across the menu, you cant go wrong. Appetizers, mains, drinks are all good.

I had a client fly me up for the weekend for a landscape design site visit and we dropped in for lunch. I had the memorable Gore St. LW ribs and and some local craft beer. I highly recommend ERNIES to friends and clients who are heading up to Sault Ste. Marie.

Too bad so sad. $69 dollars for 2 burgers shared small fries, 2 lemonades and a shared cheesecake. The last time I was there the cheesecake was tall and mighty, now it s short and stumpy. So much money for lunch and I used to love Ernie s, how can you be so greedy?

Looking for another local joint on our first time up to the Soo, and found a gem! Jack was great - food was great - atmosphere was great. Rotating menu with emphasis on using locally sourced and in season food.

I remember Ernie s as a great place to go when I was growing up. I understand that it is under new ownership now and has expanded a bit. We decided to check out the new setup while we were back in town. It didn t seem to be the welcoming atmosphere that it used to be. We had decided to take the empty table that was on the patio that was offered, but after waiting for almost 10 minutes for our table to be cleared off and being walked past a few times with very little acknowledgement, we decided to go elsewhere. We will try it again another time as this could have been a one off. Hopefully it will be different next time.

Ernies coffe shop has been an icon in Sault Sainte Marie Queen Street since the 1960s and is probably the best downtown restaurant ! Keep up the good work

Ernies offers fine dining-quality food in a cozy, vintage diner. I requested something gluten-free and dairy-free, and the chef invented an incredible fried trout over dill radish salad for me. This place has excellent hospitality and the best food for miles around.

Very delicious. I very much so enjoyed the atmosphere. Very friendly servers, very helpful and your water and coffee was consistently refilled. The food was amazing! I will return many of times.

OMG! The food is so good! Set in an old dinner you would never expect the food to be that good. Staff was also very friendly.

If you want the best food in the city - this is it. Only restaurant in this city that I return to (besides Georgies). Guaranteed a great meal every time. A refreshing face in city filled with 1980s spaghetti houses and frozen pub food. The staples are fine, but try the weekly specials and you will never be disappointed. Dont forget the Basque cheesecake on your way out.

A culinary jewel in the Sault!

We stayed in the city overnight for and discovered this gem. We sat at the booth and met some regulars who had nothing but great things to say about Ernies. The food was amazing and so was the service. I would recommend this place to anyone visiting the city.

2022 update: The original owners retired and a new owner took over just before the pandemic. Hes completely transformed the restaurant with a whole new gourmet menu focused on local ingredients a few classics remain, but are reimagined. Try the burger or chicken sandwich, and get an iced coffee or local beer. --- An absolute staple in SSM. For very reasonable prices you get big portions of home-cooked meals. I especially love the Ernie s breakfast, but anything on the menu is worth trying. They were also featured on You Gotta Eat Here so you know it s good.

Took our daughter to lunch for her birthday and the food was incredible.

The food was delicious. I got the chicken sandwich and fries and it was fabulous. Our server had the best hair I ve seen in town and his personality was so perfect for the restaurant! This place has changed but the change was great! My only reason for 4 stars is the price of the food is a bit over the norm and the fries not coming with the sandwich was a bit odd. Otherwise I recommend this place to everyone! TLDR: bit pricey but the atmosphere, servers and food will make you forget the price :)

Im just going to go ahead and say it, they make the best chicken sandwich in town. Their Coconut Cream Pie is also on point and shouldnt be missed. The new owner and chef is doing great things and its no longer boring diner food.

we ordered the full-size caesar salad and chicken burger. salad came with a nice soft-boiled egg (a surprise but a welcomed one) and it tasted great! Chicken burger was crispy on the outside but tender on the inside. Overall a great portion for the price; would order again.

Im really glad someone recommended this place to me while I was in town. They had a really fun and creative list of cocktails to choose from. The burger was one of the best burgers Ive had in a real long time. And I had this dressed apple salad that I wholeheartedly suggest you go try while it is still on the menu.

Lovely diner/cafe with a 60s retro theme that is very subtle and calming. staff were wonderful and very kind. Coconut cream pie was amazing!!

Sister and I ordered two burgers from here. We wanted to see how the new owner was. Really amazing! I know burgers in this area, and this is definitely THE BEST burger in the Soo area. And they werent cheap with the fresh homemade fries either. Will not hesitate to order from here in the near future.

Dyno! First time eating (takeout) from here! A little pricey but damn good! Ordered the Ernie Burger and the Chicken Sandwich. Fresh... huge portion and the pickles are to die for! So good!

The Mexican Hot Chocolate was delicious! And the taco fillings and baked beans were also very enjoyable.

Had the tradition Turkish wrap, had high hopes for Ernies due to the chef quality, but the dish wasnt good. I have had kebab in Turkey and around the world. Im hoping this was a fluke, and will give them another chance! Sault doesnt have many places that offer interesting flavour concepts and they have alot of potential to be a great place. Just dont be shy with the spices, salt and serving size next time!

Today Ernies you get a HUGE FAIL - ordered Ernie burger coleslaw and drink (12:30 June 11th) went to waterfront to eat - opened bag - not a single servette (Ernies burger can be messy) & no fork - do most folks eat coleslaw with their hands) - tried burger - bun was burnt on edges top & bottom - discarded bun & ate 2 patties (which were good) - my point is simple check order before giving to customer & dont burn any part of the entree - to the new owner - I know ur Ma & told her that I would support ur business whenever possible - I wont be doing that for a while - all the best WT

We ordered the tomato on toast. It was amazingly delicious! This is a must visit place in the Soo downtown area. The prices are cheap for the great quality of food they offer. Also, the ingredients are locally sourced. Added bonus is that the staff is friendly and nice. Love this place!

Sidewalk patio was nice even with some of the colorful characters of the neighborhood. Lots of cool cars and motorbikes going past. Food was good and reasonably priced with nice attentive service from the team.

Menu changes seasonally (weekly) and theres always a mix of flavours. There are classics like burgers, fried chicken sandwiches, fries etc. Food is usually 20min but call ahead for take out. COVID wise they have benches outside, masks and sign in sheet. Fresh lemonade or thai coffee are great. Queen West vibes.

This place is a big improvement over the original restaurant. I go there because they use local grass-fed beef and they know how to make a burger. This place does not disappoint, unlike your first couple marriages.

A great experience in Ernies their smoked ribs are a really different punch of flavors the bitterness of the slaw, the sweet from their sauce and smoke flavor on the ribs. It was a kiss from heaven with love. And their Spanish cheese cake was just the great finally for a fantastic meal. Thank you Ernies team

Fantastic first experience at Ernies! We started with the radish appetizer which was so delicious.. highly recommend!! The ribs were good, slightly dry and very sweet. Very much looking forward to the next meal!

Great small diner vibes with well-priced, upscale menu options. We had the Ontario corn salad, smoked fish plate, and the easy pear salad--each had their own delicious flavours and spins. Would definitely go back for more! Coffee was mediocre, but food was great.

I seen the show on TV. You got to eat here. I was on a road stopped at ernies for dinner with the wife and I. The service was very poor and the was even worse. If you see this place went driving in the sault keep driving. McDonalds is better

We discovered Ernies sometime in September 2021 and we love it so much that we ve been back almost every single week since then. We ve had their Smoked fish plate, fish and chips, pork belly, gore st lw ribs, gravlax and pressure fried chicken. All delicious, but our favourite is the pressure fried chicken (we have it every time). Notable mentions to the smoked fish plate and gravlax (but not on the standard menu). Also their fries are ready to die for *chef s kiss*. We ll be back next week!

I cannot say enough good things about this restaurant!! They use fresh local ingredients and really make each dish a work of art. I literally cannot wait to go back. In fact I might go back tomorrow for lunch. Then the next day for dinner!

Went here based on Google reviews and we werent disappointed. We tried the duck confit with sausage and white bean cassoulet and the duck breast with sweet potato mash with parsnips and pickled ginger. Both were delicious with tender duck. We ordered by phone after finding the current menu photograph on their Facebook page. Food was ready to go 30min later when I was told to come pick it up. Service was fast and friendly. Love that they have a small menu that changes frequently. Would go back again in a heartbeat! Highly recommended.

Waited in line for the walk up specials today. Had the bahn mi sandwich and the poutine. Delicious Worth the wait 100%

Amazing, fresh and local fare. Started with a kohlrabi/cucumber salad with dill/feta. I had the East Coast Style local whitefish w/ roast potatoes. Also had a bite of a fried chicken sandwich in a Nashville hot sauce. Finished with a big slice of coconut cream pie. I will be back to go through the rest of the menu. So GOOD!

The burgers are absolutely epic. Came in looking for a coffee but ended up with one of the nicest burgers from here to waterloo. Eat here for a large, not greasy, burger with fresh topping.

A dining experience that is rare in the Soo - around fifteen modern, excellent dishes on the weekly-rotating menu with locally-sourced seasonal ingredients. A nice patio right downtown and friendly staff. It was an extremely positive surprise to have gone to Ernie s only to find it under new ownership. The coffeeshop/diner has been modernised tastefully without omitting its history. Good luck to John & staff with his restaurant - I cannot recommend it enough.

The double cheeseburger was amazing. The hot chicken sandwich too. We waited 20 for takeout and used the time to nip over to outspoken brewery and pick up some beer. Ill be back to both next time Im through the Soo.

The food at Ernie s is unreal. The owner used to run the kitchen at one of Toronto s top restaurants before opening this place. This is the best food I ve ever had in Northern Ontario and I live in Northern Ontario.

Run, don t walk, to Ernie s. It s an old well known and trusted Soo diner. It was taken over recently by John Armstrong, a Soo resident who had worked in Toronto as a head chef. We had the best meal here that we ve had anywhere recently. Ingredients are locally sourced and everything is home made, delicious and fresh. We had heirloom tomato appetizer and white fish and lasagna. Nice patio. All COVID safe. And the service was top notch.

Absolutely delicious food here. The new owner is taking care and time into his food and keeping some diner classics while elevating his dishes as well. The burgers were very well priced and the friend eggplant melted in your mouth. I cant wait to come back and try the new dishes. If you are in town check them out! You wont regret it!

My new favorite place to eat in Soo. The food is exceptional and well presented. Seating is limited but the wait is worth it.

This location is a Saut Ste. Marie gem for both the local foodie and the traveler! Charming service and excellent local food with menus favourites and inventive meals that change weekly and keep with the season!

WOW! The old diner was good, but the owner has taken it to a new level! Our server was attentive and friendly. The braised rabbit was flavourful and tender, the fried chicken was crispy and delicious like a good southern chicken should be, and the chicken salad was great - smoked chicken on a bed of chopped Brussel sprouts! We had no room for dessert though the Spanish cheesecake sounded amazing! Everything was fresh and presented well! There is no liquor license yet, but it didnt matter. I almost forgot, the prices are amazing for the quality of food you are getting! We are going back today for the Spanish cheesecake.
