When I reviewed this place last, I didnt have any tattoos, and apparently, that makes a huge difference! If you have tattoos, dont expect any type of good service! The waitress had no problem serving all the other patrons of the restaurant and was super friendly with everyone else, but when it came to serving us for the first time ever it was a problem. She left our food to sit and get cold, ensuring to help everyone else. We waited patiently to get our drinks refilled, and she gave us a dirty look and avoided us completely! It clearly wasnt a racial issue, as shes been friendly with us in the past. The only thing that has changed about me in recent years was getting tattoos (tasteful flowers). When we tried speaking to the co-owner he made it very clear he shares her views on tattoos, hopefully this is informative enough for people to decide on where to eat. As for us, well never return, they lost our family as customers Parking: Theres 10 spots if everyone parks normally, and usually theres a space to park all the time. Kid-friendliness: This restaurant offers booster seats and a kids menu, and their quick to offer up crayons and paper for a fun dining experience.

Great food, nice portions, price and service. By no means a fancy place, but if you like Ernies restaurant youll like this one as well.

If you want good comfort at a good value at a small neighborhood cafe, this is it.

Lovely little diner teleported from the 60s. Amazing hospitality and food. Some of the friendliest staff at any diner...ever. We called and ordered breakfast sandwiches at 6:45am in the morning. We were taking the Agawa Canyon train tour which departs at 8am. The Westside had our breakfast packed and ready once I walked over, a couple of coffees and butter tarts gave us the best railside breakfast ever. If you are taking the tour this lovely dinner is a 3 minute walk from the station, well worth it.

The poutine was delicious and the service was great!

Would be a hit or miss depending on the servers, food is good. First time trying was so great with good food and amazing services, come back 2nd time, the older servers were not good with attitude, don t expect much from the affordable restaurant but it was bad, making the experience was unpleasant to eat, or maybe they are old so they always forget our orders, not sure.

This was a perfect first stop on our travels around Canada. I cant wait until I can go back again. I would do a day trip just to eat here.

Got a small cheeseburger bacon poutine, the grill was not sufficiently cleaned and a part of the grill brush was in my food . I but down on it and it shattered my entire tooth, the entire establishment is trying to avoid responsibility for this. I have very healthy teeth, and see the dentist once a year. My teeth are strong and healthy. Now I have to get a tooth replaced because of a POUTINE from the dirtiest restaurant in Sault Ste. Marie. They even got stripped of their alcohol license ( hmmmmmm - wonder Why) added a photo of my teeth - as you can tell they are VERY healthy. Vs the shattered tooth they tried to tell me my tooth was already cracked because the waitresses turned into DENTISTS in 2.5 seconds flat - that s why they re serving food and not working on teeth right ?

Good food with a very classic restaurant atmosphere

Foods good only thing thats missing is seasoning on home fries and sausages taste sorta overly processed.

My go to place everytime were hungry. Food is always at its best quality and service is very comforting. We just recently had a steak which was cooked to perfection and very soft. Chili was superb and the burgers were always satisfying.

The definition of dont judge a book by its cover. Definitely more of a greasy spoon diner vibe but the food is AMAZING and the service is great. The servers are so kind and personable. The food is reasonably priced and you get pretty big portions. If we lived here we would definitely be regulars!

What a delicious breakfast and wonderful service! If you want a good Canadian breakfast, this is the place to go!! Great coffee, food plentiful, very pleasant staff.

This used to be the best little diner. Food has gone downhill drastically. Portion sizes are smaller, food is usually cold, and their gravy is now tasteless. This makes the poutine that they were famous for horrible. I asked the waitress why it is likes this and she told me that it depends on who is cooking that day!

Dont let the looks of this old well used building fool you. The food was great! The potions are large and very reasonably priced. The service provided by the staff was excellent and fast. The food was delicious and cooked to perfection. All day breakfast and a good variety of choices on the menu for everyones taste.

We love going for breakfast here when in town. I hear great things about lunch and dinner. Family has been going here forever. Service is always great and friendly. Food is always good, never any issues.

Friendly staff took the time to chat with us. Food was excellent. Overall experience brought us all back to old time diner outings where the most important thing was the customer experience. Again I have to say the food was amazing. Real home cooking. I had the hot turkey, hubby had the jalapeño burger and son had the bacon & cheese poutine. We also took a cherry and a banana cream pie to go. Deeelish. Will def go back again next time we come this way

Love the west side been going there for years very kind service last service and good helpings. Waitresses are friendly and fair. Priced really like this place will always go. I ve been going there since I was 15 years old. Always had good service. Just missed the jukebox.

Waited 15 minutes at our table with no acknowledgement- 2 more tables seated after we arrived and they were greeted with menus and drink orders. Terrible service! We left!

Excellent diner food, fast and affordable. And an interesting mix of eccentric clientele to add interest. Parking: When the parking lot is full, the restaurant is full.

For a little whole in the wall cafe, this place is a diamond in the rough. Food was quite good and has huge portions.. wait staff was second to none ..

I was going to order a burger with a poutine but decided to just go with just a large bacon cheeseburger poutine. Boy, was i happy i did. There was more bacon & burger in the poutine than a separate burger. It was a mountain & it was absolutely delicious, too. The staff were friendly & super nice. We have gone back 3 times since, & we took family with. Well be back again. If you want an excellent meal at a great price I suggest you stop there & give them a try. You wont regret it. Theres parking on the side, they serve breakfast all day, and you get real food (none of that pre made, warmed up rubber possessed fast food junk). And whats amazing is that it was cheaper than any of the fast food burger joints. Parking: Theres a fair size parking lot on the side. Kid-friendliness: Theres high chairs & in fact there were a couple of kids there when we went for breakfast.

Just dont. HUGE waste of money. If you want the kind of atmosphere westside used to have, go to stock house or delucas, this place is incredibly overpriced for homestyle cooking. Like sinfully overpriced

What a great lil place for breakfast or lunch. We enjoyed eating their on our stay at Searchmont ski resort. If yer around the sault St. Marie Ontario area or passing threw, dont hesitate to make this stop to get a bite.

Use to like this place back in the day till I seen a massive roach on the floor while I was waiting for my order never been back since.

Amazing old school diner that is open 24 hours - were from out of town and for some reason all the SSM restaurants close ridiculously early. We were super grateful they were open at 9. Anyways the bacon poutine was amazing and the chicken was really good too. Plus its got real old school diner charm. Would not hesitate to eat here again.

Sadly - had to walk out. Served newer customers first. As slow as molasses. Probably a good experience if you just ate and had nothing to do for a few hours while waiting to be served.

This is a staple in our downtown area. Have gone there for over 20 years. It doesnt look like much, but the people who work there are just amazing. The interior could use some work but everything else is just cozy and perfect.

As a long time regular customer . Previous waitress I love the Westside Cafe however, tonight was not a great experience! There were many skip the dishes guys in and out .which seemed to slow our food down a bit! But the most upsetting part was the cook (Johnny) swearing at a new waitress and telling her loudly to F&$K OFF!! I am so stunned . And so not impressed .that I decided to come here and comment!! Wheelchair accessibility: Not even close to accessible!!

I have been a regular customer for over 30 years. I love the food and their evening staff are great people. I am writing this review to plead with the owners to get rid of the Skip The Dishes option that was recently introduced. Your establishment was great the way it was. Adding this feature has only slowed down wait time for your dine-in customers and added a stressful atmosphere. We ate there this evening and it took twice as long to get our food. We are not blaming the cook or wait staff. They were doing everything within their powers to accommodate all customers, but having only 1 cook who is working his butt off to accommodate everyone, isnt fair to anyone, customers or staff. Our waitress decided to help the cook because the Skip orders were coming in non-stop. All we heard was the constant ding ding of the incoming orders. You know that saying, dont fix it if it isnt broken? You werent broken.

Julie is my bew favorite waitress and deserves a raise/promotion... Oh and Westside is by far the best greasy grill in the city...possibly the country. Keep up the great work people. The West Side Cafe poutine are to die for...seriously some of the best place to get a great selection of poutines. The breakfast menu is huge, very well portioned for the money. Homemade pies for desert... As far as I remember, they even serve alcohol.

We loved coming here for the food. But when the cook came out and made a racist derogatory comment to my husband made me realize the intent of this person was not one of someone who is comfortable with having just anyone being a patron. He was directly being racist it was not even like we came there to start anything. My husband was standing in line to pay for our food when the comments were made. The cook was talking silently behind his back but he didn t realize we were sitting there. We have not ate here again since and let our families know that live near by to not be a patron either. Given that the place is old and dirty it wasn t hard to decide not too. Food may be good but it s small, dirty and not kind nor friendly if you re a person of color! No thanks!

Went this morning for breakfast before my fiancé and I headed back to Toronto. Was to absolutely to die for. I had the Eggs Benedict and my fiancé got the Hungry mans breakfast. Both were amazing and delicious. The price was fair for the amount of food you get and absolutely worth every penny. Its a little out of the way, but if youre craving a good, fresh and hot breakfast in Sault Ste Marie, this is the place!

My husband and myself go here once a week and no matter what we get we always have to upgrade to the poutine. Some weeks even the whole family goes. When my kids are asked where they want to eat, Westside is usually a first choice

Unsure what happened lately but westsides service absolutely sucks as of late. They DO NOT go by their hours anymore, lock the doors before they close and just stare at you while still serving others inside.

Great prices homemade soup and sausage and burgers. Great staff ( you might see mixed reviews on staff because these arecreal people not fake they joke and be honest say real talk not what you wanna hear like at a chain fake place) Id go 5 stars but the frys are a but unforgiving... they seem fresh cut then under cooked later. I get pre blanching frys to save time but please cook them through second time around.

Absolutely terrible service from one staff member in particular and if your any other ethnicity other than caucasian expect even worse service or even just being down right ignored. Or if your in a multicultural relationship dont bother coming here either as the same as above applies I will never be coming here again and ensuring to let everyone else know just how atrocious the services and just how rude and racist the staff is!

From down south, stopped in for lunch while visiting northern ontario and were very happy with our meal! Huge portions and overall very tasty food. Servers were pleasant, only minor negative I can think of is food took a very long time to come out there were only a few customers at the time. Homemade pirogies were delicious! Prices are fair for the amount of food you get.

Westside Café has always been my classic favourite. I love the poutine, especially the amazing gravy. The service is always amazing, so kind. They also allow decent substitutions upon request.

Potatoes and coleslaw is worth the trip.

Food okay, way overpriced. 2 sandwiches should not cost $51. Mandatory tipping is disgusting for take out food.

I visit here frequently with my partner. Awesome breakfast and lunch items with prices that are from a better time. Neat vintage design inside. Right near the border crossing in a historical part of SSM.
