200 Silver Star Blvd #306, Scarborough, ON M1V 0E5, Canada
Popular eatery for casual Sichuan-style comfort food, including kung pao chicken & noodles.
Been coming here since this was Ban Mu Yuan/Schezuan Legend. Great food here. I love their fried chicken soaked in salted egg yok served with peas, corn, and carrots. And fu ji fei pian. Kao Rao (Chinese bacon). Mi Feng (rice noodles). And their pastries filled with ice cream as dessert.
Backyard Garden is not 'Westerner' friendly. I was born in Canada but was raised in a traditional-Chinese food setting. True Szechuan Chinese food is hard for other cultures to understand - full of chilis, bad cuts, and grease. But make no mistake - if you're looking for a truly authentic Szechuan affair, Backyard Garden is probably the best restaurant I have found in Toronto that stays true to their cultural roots. Think of this like fine-cheese - for those who like strong flavours, it's the best thing out there. For most however, they would rather have a nice mild cheddar.
I ordered a chicken with Chili Sauce and this was served to me. A single dish had over 100 peices of full length dry chillies. I asked the female server why there is so much raw chillies in there and literally no chicken at all and she pretended to not understand my question. I am sure no one in this world would consume this many chillies in a day. I also ordered chicken fried rice and it was all mushy rice with few peices of green beans and peaces in their. I have ordered one more dish and it was dry like cooked yesterday. For my taste nothing I could have eat. So I asked for the bill as I approached the counter. Total bill was $44.75. Since me and my friend both had not touched the food I had no desire to pay any gratuity. I gave her a $50 bill and she offered no change back. They don't even accept charge card but cash only. Bottom line is that others may like the food but it was not to my teste and bad service could be due to language barriers. Thanks.
Good quick service and flavorful food, but I'm staying away from their General Tso chicken if I ever go back there. Other Chinese restaurants make it with boneless chicken but there were plenty of bones in this one. Each piece was bite-size but that's because it was cut-up drumsticks with bones attached. I think I even swallowed a few bone fragments. I'll get a different chicken dish if I go back.
Came for lunch. I ordered the sweet and sour chicken lunch combo. ($7.99) The hot and sour soup that came with it was very good, chicken was tasty, not syrupy or over breaded. Service was much better than most Chinese places in the area. Will come back for dinner one night.
So good! Friendly staff and delicious food. Will definitely go back. Had the crispy spicy chicken and the hot dumplings. They serve beer here too. Great atmosphere with plenty of tables. Would recommend this place if you are from out of town and want some good Chinese food. Next time I'm trying the crispy beef. Looked so good in the menu picture.
Good spicy dishes but there was no AC on. The spicy food plus the amount of people made for a very uncomfortable dinner which had everyone complaining. Many tables around us raced to finish and get out ASAP. They claimed the AC was broken, but the fan was running and the AC was cranked up at the entrance. We checked the thermostat and saw that it read 28 degrees inside. The least they could do was turn it on a little bit. Ruined an okay dinner
There are a few really good dishes. The spicy chicken is quite flavourful and hot. One of my favorites. Lunch specials are ok but don't come with rice. Portions are ok. Not terribly expensive, but not super cheap. Overall it's quite good IMO. Service is so so.
Food is good. Its located in a very busy plaza so you may need to wait a little to get your parking spot.
Hello! I d like to ask where is this restaurant located now? Thanks
Noise
The service in this restaurant is really bad. The ordered meal was not delivered for an hour and a half. It was said that there were 10 orders. How can a restaurant open such a restaurant if it takes so long to order 10 orders? He asked for help to check how long it would take for the order. Without checking or saying anything, he just said he would order food and hung up the phone! Bad review!
I was very impressed with this restaurant when I visited Toronto half a year ago. As a Chengdu native, I can t say that its Sichuan cuisine is authentic, but it is the most unsatisfactory Sichuan-style home-cooked food I have ever eaten in Canada. The feeling of a hundred dishes and a hundred flavors. There was a great discount on rice balls but they are closed now. The sealed packaging of pigs trotters originally refers to product packaging.
I was given less than one piece of rice in the takeout, and the kidneys were still bloody. I, a person who loves to eat kidneys, was vomited by their kidneys. The merchant said that the kidneys are normal and no refunds will be given, but I think most people should not be able to accept blood-stained kidneys...
We had the hot and sour soup, the Onion pancake, rice cakes and steamed dumplings. All of them were excellent.
Ive always liked this restaurant. Been here many times. I don t know if the boss has changed. Completely different feeling. When served, the mutton was naturally cold. The sweet and sour pork ribs tasted strange when coated in batter. Pig, the smell is very strong. Most of the twice-cooked pork contains cabbage. The fish meat inside the boiled fish was rotten. None were tasty. Even the rice is of poor quality. Will never come again
It tasted too bad. I really didn t want to eat a piece of beef. It smelled disgusting, so I poured it down directly. The boiled fish was also thick. It was the first time I saw it. It was really bad.
Poor service. Food is just ok. Not worth it. I checked my order with reception and she told me kitchen was PREPARING my order. I was standing in front of her for OVER 20mins she told me one of my dishes spicy fish was no longer available. And my order (other 3 dishes) was sent to kitchen AFTER I said I don t want spicy fish anymore. Basically I m waiting for nothing for 30mins... she was swearing about how busy she is all along
I am a regular customer of this store! I recently discovered that every takeout tastes different. The dish I ordered today is really inedible. It tastes too bad and has no Sichuan flavor at all, so I am writing a review. Moreover, the service quality is also very poor, and I will never go to this restaurant again!
Restaurant has been in this location for a long time and understandably so. Nice casual spot that offers an assortment of authentic Sichuan dishes. Hard to miss as their restaurant windows are covered with the dishes they offer here.
portion is good
Let s not mention the takeout portion. Yesterday I ordered a takeout with pork stewed vermicelli. It was understandable that the portion was not large, but what does it mean to give it out to customers when the meat is smelly? You can t save money by serving rotten food to your guests! ! ! ! ! Decisively report to the Health Bureau
Lunch was fantastic, had a pleasant time
We ordered 5 items on September 4th, 2021, but realized theres a missing item after arriving home (there were only 4 itemsin the bag). Very bad experience!
Only few real sizchun food around
Tomato scrambled eggs taste good
The chef must have changed. The food is not as good as the old restaurant. It is very unpalatable.
they only accept CASH! not even debit card, I guess we all know what that means! but they also charge HST!
Great service and food.
Food was not bad
Will you send me a cooking package directly if you order takeaway? The shredded chicken was still cold. It was the first time I ordered takeout and had it heated by myself. Adding vinegar to the haggis soup can t cover up the smell, it s awesome
Since they changed ownership, prices have gone up, portions have gone down, and service has become abhorrent. Used to absolutely love this place but its become rather terrible as of late. If you used to come here years ago, definitely recommend avoid now
so so
The service attitude is bad. The Xinjiang special pilaf is not pilaf but fried rice. It doesn t taste like Xinjiang food at all. I just ate it.
Authentic Chinese food of the southern and spicy variety. Good prices and portions. A lot of the menu items have tons of chilly in them and may not be palatable for some.
Raised Price lowered quality.
The chef here isnt really know how to cook spicy Sichuan food. We ordered spicy chicken and got very strange flavor and it doesnt taste like traditional Sichuan spicy chicken. I would not come again and wont recommend people come here either . I ordered takeout spicy chicken today. I have never tasted spicy chicken with such a strange taste. It has no aroma of dried chili peppers at all and is full of the flavor of black bean. I have never had spicy chicken with black bean sauce. The chicken was neither loose nor crispy. I dont know how this restaurant can continue to operate as Sichuan cuisine.
Excellent and authentic Sichuan food
The stew beef is so not fresh!!! It feels like it was cooked weeks before. The fried cabbage has too much grease. Not recommended!
The old restaurant tastes very good, especially the saliva chicken and twice-cooked pork
AMAZING
Spicy food with zeechwan pepper
The taste may be one of the best Sichuan style dishes in Scarborough! Came from Sichuan, I knew the real taste!
tasty
Found the place thru another new find...FIREFLY..in the First Markham place complex....and as a Hongkong Style eatery its pretty good. Anyway this Backyard Garden has excellent HOT SPICY DELICIOUS SZCHEWAN FOODS.....all 8 items we tried were exceptionally good. Quality and quantity were unbelievable!!! PRICES VERY VERY REASONABLE...IN FACT VERY CHEAP !!! Go there...I promise you will eat till you drop !!! Try the spicy pork elbow...yuuuummmyyy!!
I came here because the restaurant in Midland was closed. The menu is good, but the taste is terrible. Where can I get Sichuan food? Its so far behind compared to before. It was past seven oclock and there was no one there. The boss changed and he spoke Cantonese. Spicy pepper sausage, the fat sausage is not fresh, it is still green pepper. The boss insists that it is hot pepper, but the chef cuts it differently. The name of the store has not been changed, I just want to capitalize on the previous reputation. If you want to eat Sichuan food, forget it!
Not bad. The food were a bit greasy, and the taste was strong. Not a lot of msg taste compared to other places.
really bad restaurant. the price is high, food are urgly, no service, I will never come back again.
Mainland Chinese Food. Food is fairly decent at a very affordable price too.
Very cheap and not very tasty
Greasy, spicy, and delicious Chinese food. Come here on weekdays during lunch for some good deals (I think it was $7 ish per plate? Dont quite recall).
I often come here for dinner with my friends.
good
Wonderful place with many tasty Szchuan style dishes. Cozy and crowded.
One of the most authentic Szechuan style restaurants and food around. Beware if you have never had numb style food because that s all they re about here. But growing up eating foods with numb it s extremely yummy. If you like Szechuan foods this is a great choice!
lj
Vegan options
I ordered a takeaway box lunch of dried bacon and it felt good.
Food is average but place is ok
Extremely unhygienic restaurant as hell!
Everything was sooo delicious !! Good casual, cozy, bright and clean atmosphere , too.
Good Chinese Taste
Cheap and tasty
Yummy food but the vegetables are not good
Food is So-So. Worst BBQ lamb skewer Ive ever had in my life; was deep-fried, not barbecued, and the meat was not fresh at all. Tasted like some rotten meat from a few weeks ago. Service was very slow when it was more than half-empty. Never coming back again.
Really spicy food special dish of Chinese Sachivan dishes. Very tasty. Sitting is not quite nice but it is acceptable, very busy place.
Ban Mu Yuan should be renamed (Ban Mu Salt). I ate at two restaurants (Ban Mu Salt) and the dishes I ordered were inedible because there was too much salt. It can be said to be a plate of half mu salt.
Portions have gotten a lot smaller. This used to be a favourite place to eat.
ok
I ate fish with pickled vegetables, steamed pork with rice noodles, and broccoli with fungus. The taste was very average, not as good as home-cooked food. The fish had a fishy smell. Don t be fooled by the photos on the menu.
Although the restaurant is a bit crowded, the food is still delicious.
The only group meal in a few days where the rice bowl bottomed out
Too much fat in those meat dishes. Other stuff good.
Food was ok but lacked quantity for the price. Also quite salty so we needed more rice.
Went for dinner in the evening. The food was really not delicious. The Maoxuewang boiled bullfrog tasted exactly the same. I couldnt taste anything except spicy. I guess the boiled meat slices also tasted the same. I didnt have any change when I paid. I gave 100% change. Seven tip, I was stopped and told that it must be 10%. I have never come across a restaurant that forces a 10% tip in such a long time. In short, I will not come to this restaurant again. It is different from the one in Jinzhongcheng. There are too many family differences.
Found the food here to be very oily. However the portion size are very generous.
Love food in this restaurant . However, dont like it after they stop accepting credit cards. They learn the bad habit frim other Chinese restaurant only cadh or debit.
Always good authentic Szechuan dishes. Good and friendly service from the staff.
Our group of 8 came here for lunch. We were seated right away. We ordered some things from the lunch special and others from the menu. 30 mins after ordering, we didnt receive anything. Only after I asked where our food was, did the waitress notice a large table had no food. (We were in the center of the restaurant). The waitress have an excuse that we had some items that took a long time to cook, but we clearly saw her just giving our order to the kitchen because she forgot... I didnt appreciate being lied to. Once we started getting our food, things were lukewarm and tasted bland. Especially the dumplings. After all the food had arrived, we got the bill and noticed that 4 of the billed items didnt arrive but we were charged. So I got them to correct the mistake... 4 items missing out of 14 total is a big mistake. So when we left the restaurant, the meal took over 2 hours for a work lunch... Never again.
Always quality service and food
I dont think chicken...vegetables would be expensive...but why so little?
simply garbage service
A time-honored Chinese restaurant with good quality and low price. It is very convenient to order takeaway from them at noon.
It is one of my favorite lunch location.
Probably 3.5 stars, service is decent and the food is alright for its cuisine, but everything is very salty. It comes at a very affordable price though.

Wonderful Sichuan style food.
Had read some good reviews for Kung pho chicken but it was really bad. The hunt continuous
Use to go here a lot, but now I have kids, I find it hard to bring kids there. The chairs and table arrangment is not kids friendly. Foods are great tasting but I feel very thirsty afterward. Otherwise it is all good.
Pretty delicious food and great place to eat. I am not the Sichuan food type person so I dunno how to enjoy it. But ppl who do rlly like the food here. Plus, it is clean and tidy :)
Terrible service and unclean food. The meat wasnt fresh which gave my friend stomach issues! We pointed out the problem to the waiter. She argued and denied everything. We just paid for the bad food and left. This restaurant did not think about to investigate the problem with their material, but rather blame the customers. Do not recommend this restaurant as for the food cleanness concern.
Stated Swearing at kids and had bad attitude, old lady standing at counter should be fired.
Great skewers, their fried lamb chops are wonderful. Everything is a little greasy, but so delicious.
Been here for over 10 years. Food is not bad.
Try another one
Great spicy food
Probably the earliest Sichuan restaurant in Toronto. Good place if you like hot foods. Price is ok. Food is better than its branch at midland/finch. Now there are better choices for Sichuan food.
Very tasty sichuan cuisine.
Best Kung Pao Chicken in Markham!
I live in Rochester NY, and my wife is Chinese, so we tend to make a trip up to Toronto a couple times a year to hit China Town. Some friends pointed out Markham as a more modern Chinese area and we discovered the Backyard Garden. By and far THE BEST Szechuan I have had outside of China, yes the crispy spicy chicken comes covered in chillies, and other spices, this is just like I had over in China, it doesnt get any better. My wife tends to order different every time we have dined here and she enjoys everything. If you want truly non-westernized authentic Chinese food, then this IS the place to go!
