27 Freshwater Rd, St. John's, NL A1C 2N1, Canada
I found out about Leo's when I watched a number of Mark Royle YouTube videos about Newfoundland fish and chips. Along with all his other recommendations Leo's didn't disappoint. The fries had a different taste than the other fish and chip places that I loved. The staff were friendly and welcomed me as newcomer with characteristic Newfoundland hospitality. Leo's is a must try when in St. John's.
Initial opinion on location is what seems to be a mom n pop fish and chips store. The furniture is a bit old but does the job. The food was fresh prepared, and it took around 10 minutes from order to delivery. However, it did not disappoint. I had the large fish and fries with all the fixing. Had all the wonderful flavors and fixtures you would want in a St. John's fish and chips. I would think the plate is sharable as I was full from lunch to dinner!
Leo's was good. Fish was smaller than Ches's or Keith's darker softer batter. Chips dressing and gravy were good. Wanted the works but they were out of peas and carrots I ended up having fried o ions on top. Old location nostalgic place to have a feed of fish and chips.
Ordered a one piece fish and poutine, received an old piece of fish with a handful of fries with no gravy, cheese or tarter sauce. Excellent.
Leo's fish and chips are legendary in St. Johns. Simply put they are worth every bit of time and energy it takes to try them! So good!
Since it’s in Newfoundland and I have been to other fish places I have to give it a 3-star. If this restaurant is in Toronto I’ll give it a 4. I went to Ches’s next door and it’s a solid 5. The waiting time is very very long although there aren’t many customers. Food is semi burnt. The fish is soggy. Batter is also soggy. Staff not pleasant. Fries are so-so. Gravy has a burnt taste, it’s thick but it’s tasteless. Fish (cod) is good but the soggy batter ruins it. My suggestion is to go to Ches’s next door instead. Ches’s is cheaper too.
Lovely service and loved the salt and pepper shakers. Good portions. Flaked soft cod. Would have liked newer oil for the fry up. But it's not so serious a gripe. A place like this is becoming rarer, knowing it's intimate, and a lot of patrons being greetex with such familiarity.
The fish and chips are great! The batter is very crispy and the fries are just so good. It's a very popular place for the locals and it just has a few seats. You might have to wait bit during peak hours. But you won't be disappointed. A must try if you're looking for some good fish and chips. Very friendly service as well.
Definitely one of the best fish and chips in town.
The gold standard of fish & chips
Best fish & chips I had in Newfoundland.
Old school cool fish and chip heaven
Great local restaurant! Some of the best in town its always a good toss up between here or cheses!
Best fish and chips in St. Johns! Great service and fair pricing.
Fish was good, pieces were a little small for the price, but fresh.
One of the ultimate St. Johns experiences
Staff were really friendly, but the Fin & Feather were rubbery in the middle and the batter was kinda soggy. Closes at 7pm so its not very conducive to dinner plans either. Food
Best fish n chips in st johns
Enjoyed great food, Fish and chips, in a relaxed setting.
The Best Fish n Chips in the city
Great fish and chips. Very friendly and helpful staff.
The Best Fish n Chips in the city The gravy is to die for Food
Incredible
Overall I d give it a 7. Big portions on the fries, dressing and gravy. Fish portions were small. I m gonna stick with Ches
Nice little local restaurant with great fish & chip
Good, simple, downhome stick-to-your-ribs meals in a diner. Nothing like a hot turkey sandwich (your choice white or brown meat) with peas, carrots, fries, dressing and gravy. Wheelchair accessibility: Not accessible - stairs, narrow door
First trip to Leos in 20 years, big success great fish and chips! Fresh fries just like I remember! I shall return!
NL style fish n chips was very good. Comes with dressing, gravy n coleslaw. Could really do with some sprucing up Food : 4/5
Wheelchair accessibility: None Food
Been going here for over 40 years
Delicious, as always!
Best fish and chips in St. Johns, in my opinion!
We had the best fish & chips in Newfoundland. The gravy and the dressing was the most unique experience we had with fish and chips. They have huge servings and great service
Good food. Great service. Kind of pricey.
Loved it. Not much changed here in 40 years
I wait once a year to taste my favorite fish and chips
Hours are not accurate was closed when I showed up
Love the fi & ch
Our first meal in Newfoundland... Best fish and chip in town :)
Grumpy server every time we go there. Otherwise it s the best F&C in town.
Very nice there, the wait is like 2or4 minutes and the waiters are very welcoming
Best fish n chips in town. Its like stepping back in time.
Family atmosphere, and the best fish n chips in St. Johns!
Seriously delicious food. They could marinade their chicken in a wee amount of brine to flavor up the meat. A little more costly than anticipated (19 dollars for a 2 piece fish and chips, 4 dollars more for dressing and gravy). We will say it was a treat and we hope to enjoy it again down the road.
Excellent meal as usual
Best fish and chips in Saint Johns. Period.
Leos is a St. Johns tradition
Really good Fries Dressing and Gravy !
Had a fish and chips and it was just has good now has it was when I was going there 20 years ago.
Family business homey atmosphere and amazing food definatly worth your while to give Leos a shot
Horrible place, the service is terrible food is terrible, the staff are very unfriendly, I wouldn t recommend this place they call a restaurant to my worst enemy,
The food is fantastic. I really like the homey feel of the place. The staff are definitely true Newfoundlanders with their friendliness and ready smile on their faces
Despite the cost, Leos fish and chips is and always the best. A family run business thats been passed on down through the family.... One of my favorite places to eat in..... Great Job #Leos!!!
Clean... fast... friendly... always a great meal
Food was good. Server was not the nicest.
Always great food (FCDG) and great service.
Favorite place for fish and chips in St. Johns. Good size portions, dont forget the dressing and gravy!!!!
Best fish chips dressing gravy ever ! No wonder a guy choose to eat out othe Memorial Cup at Leos ! Id do the same Best Wishes Debbie from Nanaimo BC Robert
Very good fish and chips. Well worth the walk from downtown.
Very good!
Fin and feather dressing and gravy cooked perfect
My fav fish and chips in town
Large fries wasn t large, almost $10 for a couple of potatoes cut and fried. Treated like I was being done a favour allowing me to order. Won t be back...
Another great Fish & Chips at Leos! I love this place.
Best fish and chips in the city and the staff and service is fantastic!
Just had the worse food at Leo s. And waited 25 minutes for it too.
Great fish and chips, they dont cook it till you order it, never seen that at other places. Had it Sept. 7/22, still as good as ever.
The dressing and gravy was great. The fish was good as well.
Always excellent. first place I went for fish chips in nfld 11 years ago. I go every trip
WAY better than the guy next door! First time I had Leos - am from out of town. The food was incredible - the fish was like butter, the batter was perfect. It was crisp on the outside and had a little chew to it. I had the 2 piece with a few fries...even for a few...it was a LOT! My aunt had the same but with a lot of fires...way too many fires...lol. The gravy was typical restaurant gravy, but with a home-style light color to it...we liked it, and it was a full cup - served in a coffee cup. Will go back again now every time I go to St. Johns if I want fish and chips. The tarter sauce....well, that could use some work. They had those little packages - not so great. Its easy to make...just sayin. Oh - be forewarned - the place is a dive, literally almost walked out when we saw the inside...but glad we didnt the food was excellent, wait time was about average for food - about 30 minutes and others were there before us. And the onion rings were awesome too! Server...took a bit for her to warm up, but then she came around...standoffish, but friendly... Its an experience thats for sure...and worth a trip in..again..and again.
Best fish n chips in Newfoundland!!
Fish n chips are ok. Had to drown everything in vinegar to give it some flavour. Not the best in town thats for sure. The gravy is really good
Nothing fancy food great people friendly
Have been a customer since the days Leo was behind the counter. The food has always been great and the service excellent. No matter what you order you will always get great food and fast friendly service with a big smile!
Best fish and chips in St. John s!
Little greasy...but tasty
Staff are friendly. Food is tasty.
Leos is a gem of Newfoundlands take out culture. It has always been good and consistent. Never change Leos!
Great food here. Interesting experience compared to big restaurant chains. Staff are great as well! This place is always on my short list when Im looking for a feed of fish and chips . Thanks again!
Great, tasty meal
Burgers used to be amazing and now they taste like they are cooked on an old uncleaned flat top grill with little to no care involved in the process. Very unhappy with my past few experiences.
Excellent fish and chips
Well I asked about their menu item A few fries and 1 piece of fish. Then proceeded to order 2 orders of that with fries. What we got was 10 to 13 fries with a small piece of overfried dry fish.Gravy was good but charged us $2 for a tbsp.We were charged for sm fish/chips at $10 but were given less then the $8 fish and few fries that we ordered. Was very unimpressed and will never go there again.$27.60 !!!
Good food.
Great food, friendly staff, awesome prices
Great fish with thin batter, fast service
We heard this place has the best fish and chips, I didn t find anything special about the food. This is in a hard part of the city.
The best hamburgers and fish & chips in St. Johns. A family business operating since 1954. Ive eaten there at least once a week since September 1970. What more can be said?
Old time favorite fish and chips restaurant that locals frequent regularly.
It was one of the best meals Ive had in NL in years!! I visit twice a year and this was just so so amazing!!! Two orders of Cod bites with fries, dressing and gravy and a drink each came to about 38 bucks, love that the walls are covered in autographed pictures of celebrities that have eaten there so you know who sat in your booth
Great food and friendly staff
Watched the deliver the fresh caught cod to the restaurant, Yummmmmm
Menu is not large but the fish and chips were awesome! Dont let the decor deter you. Best fish and chips around.
Leos has been a family tradition for me for as long as I can remember. The fish is great, the chips are great, and theres dressing and gravy when you want it. Going to Leos feels like eating with family.
Honestly, this was the worst fish and chips Ive ever had. I feel sick a few hours after eating it and I barely ate half the plate. The woman working did not say hello and just had an overall sketchy feel. I knew I should have just left. Location is also rough and uncomfortably so. The woman did not know much about the fish source or quality. I highly doubt it was fresh, despite being told this, parts of it were like mush. Our group didnt even bother eating the batter, it wasnt appealing. Fries were bland and the gravy was as well. If you want good fish and chips, the best Ive had so far is at By The Beach. This is just disgusting.
Leos Fish & Chips is our go to fish & chips place whenever we visit St. Johns. The wall of fame with pictures of many celebrities is an indication of its popularity! I have frequented this amazing restaurant atleast 5 times because the love of the fish and fresh cut fries. The fish is brought in fresh daily and is always tasty and delicious. The staff are always friendly and very respectful. This little restaurant is a local icon and a must stop during our visits to the Rock!
Best fish and chips in town with the best customer service
Simple menu, excellent execution, quick and friendly service. Needs homemade tartar sauce.
Great food
Great food
Unbelievably good fish and chips. Loved it.
I ordered through Skip, and the driver was a little behind, and a Leos employee actually called to explain the delay to me. Also, I was impressed bc they prepare their orders to coordinate with the driver, so that food is delivered as fresh as possible. The food was so delicious, I ate every bit, and it is not often I would even eat all the fries. The fish was flaky, the batter crispy; my cat may have been jealous. I would definitely order from here again, and I do recommend them. The two piece was really only $10 plus tax. Soretty inexpensive indeed.
Not bad. Way over priced for what you get but Chess isnt much better cause they down sized their portions.
Leos never disappoints. Good fish and chips.
Always good
Leo s fish and chips the best tasting fish and chips in the world. Today I stopped in to pick up an order. I am exempt from wearing a mask. There was a customer upset because I didn t have a mask on however no one else at that time was wearing a mask except for the staff as everyone was eating. The owner was very professional. She didn t question me or make any one feel uncomfortable. The upset customer who had 90 percent finished her meal got up to walk out and the owner Kindly offered her food to go. Leo s staff and food is amazing. Not only is the food delicious the owners are most accommodating.
Best chips dressing gravy in St. Johns. A neighbourhood classic.
Friendly staff.good food
Excellent food and service. Best fish and chips anywhere on the Avalon.
I ordered a two piece wings chips and gravy and it was delicious. However the portion was super size small. Two wings great the French fries portion was super small on a very small tray. For almost 14.00 I expected more. I was still hungry after I ate it. Very disappointed. Just because it s Covid don t gouge us. Feed me.
Definitely not the Leos I remember. Fries were great but its pretty hard to screw up fries. The fish just wasnt great. The batter was rubbery, resembling cardboard almost. The fish itself was fresh but the batter left a lot to be desired. This used to be my favorite spot in town but I feel like I cant say that anymore. Definitely unfortunate!
Best fish and chips in town
Good job
Good fish and good atmosphere just a bit dated but the fish was great
Great food & great service. Highly recommend.
Family favourite!
Some of the best fish and chips in the city. Friendly staff and they make their own malt vinegar.
My favorite fish n chips shack by far. The Chess on topsail road is close behind in 2nd :)
The fish and chips were delicious! We wanted to try a few local eateries and we were very happy with the food! The server was very friendly and the locals seem to frequent the place.
We took the advice of our Air B&B host and went to Leos. Amazing fish & chips, service and atmosphere. Well definitely go back.
The only thing better than the fish and chips is the staff that work there. Absolutely an exceptional experience.
Little greasy .fries were cold.
Good food, needs new furniture, lol
Big DISAPPOINTMENT...
Fair Fish and Chips for a fair price. Okay but not great
Not the worse Ive tasted but certainly not the best.
Great fish and chips
Great food
LEOS FOOD is awesome. It is the last 50 years that I know of
Love this place. Always excellent!!
Awesome feed
Still the best in St. Johns. A local favourite not to be missed.
Been going there for over 30 years . The fish and chips are excellent. Its a regular style take out/eat in
A classic diner to have fish and chips. Freshly fried and made to order. Rick Mercer is on the walls as a fan.
Fast and friendly
Best place and so old school love it
Great food, nice service and good quantity. Overall, pleasantly surprised!
Best fish and chips anywhere. Dont let the decor fool you its one of the places best features. The owners keep the store clean and havent changed anything in 30 +years. Instead they just focus on giving you great food and large quantities.
Excellent FCD&G!! Omg!!! Havent been there in years, waited 30 mins but it was well worth it! Will be back! Leos F&Cs rocks the rock!!!! Crispy yummy tastey! WellW be back!
