I have been to this restaurant several times for business dinner, experience was good. I went there twice with my family, they didn’t treat us with respect. One time, the waitress added the tip to the bill, as if they somehow thought that we won’t give a proper tip. I don’t remember doing the same during my official visit. I am starting to think this behaviour is systematic not one off. On another occasion during a summer afternoon we went to the restaurant walk-in. The manager gave us a careful look and said the restaurant is full ( in a disrespectful manner), even though it was very empty we could see. Clearly he assessed, this is a family, from our look - not going to consume alcohol, lot of people in downtown, it’s worth waiting for people who will spend more. From that day I stopped going there.
It was tough to imagine that one could and delicious wholesome indian Thali in the far East Coast of Canada. The owner originally from Punjab, india migrated to Canada and have been living here in St Johns over 35 years. The owner is very courteous. After a long travel I reached St John's and I could make it to India Gate restaurant just 10 mins before closing. Owner courtesy welcomed me in and arranged a Indian Thali and a glass of wine The Thali was visually very appealing, with aromatic flavors with perfectly balanced spices in an authentic flavors. If you love indian food, this is a must visit place when travelling to St John's.
I have to give this a star rating of 3 and here’s why: I’ve never eaten at a restaurant where I am advised of mandatory tipping , and the percent of the tip. Don’t get me wrong, I tip , but let me be the deciding factor on how much. Ie, 10-15 %. And before taxes , of course. Here, it’s mandatory 18% added to bill. So, for this, I will not return. The food is great, and I tip what I can afford , but I will Not take my business here anymore. My colleague from Toronto was also shocked at the bold statement in the menu. Loyal Customer lost!
This was my first visit to India gate . I liked the vibe here , soft music , spacious and dim lights dining and good customer service they provide . Servers are very polite and friendly and make sure you enjoy your food . In St. John’s so far this was the only place where you can get tasty Indian food . Quality and Quantity was pleasant. I would recommend this place for sure 💯
I actually got recommended to this place by some of the indians that i met in St. Johns. They told me out of all the indian restaurants in St. Johns that this was the best one. So i went there in the evening as they only open from 4 pm onwards. The atmosphere and ambience of the place are great. Should give them credit where credit is due. They certainly have the space to accommodate a lot of people. The place was not busy as i arrived there at 4:30 pm. I was welcomed by the waitress who took me to the table. Upto now, everything was great, but the moment i saw the menu, i was perplexed! The prices for the food items on the menu are so much expensive. Even if the food is expensive, one would think at least the food would make up for it. So i ordered an aloo gobi masala with butter naan and tandori roti. The aloo gobi masala was just so basic and not worth its price of 23$ I am coming from Moncton, New Brunswick, where the same item would cost less and taste way better. Since this is the only option or the best among the rest would be the reason why the prices are this high, but overall, i am disappointed. Also, apparently, you are required to provide 18% mandatory tips, which i didn't provide because tips are provided on the basis of service, atmosphere, food, and overall satisfaction. I was not satisfied at all.
12 of us spent the evening there, great service beautiful atmosphere. Particularly enjoyed the veggie samosas with the chickpea spicy sauce. Best samosas in the country!
We enjoyed a pleasant dinner at India Gate. We ordered a tandoori plate and eggplant dish. The tandoori meats were tender and flavorful. The eggplant was equally well prepared. We also liked the cozy ambiance.
The tandoori chicken, laacha paratha, roti and butter chicken were very tasty. Best I have had in St John’s. Service and ambience is also great. I would go back again. I did not like dessert so much though. The saffron cake tasted like a normal tea cake and the gulab jamun was a bit rubbery. I’m okay with the 18% tip but don’t understand why it’s applied on the total bill including hst.
Me and friend got sick after their food. Food was alot spicy but lacked any actual flavour. I wouldn t eat here again.
Just bad quality food overall.
I have 2 experiences that I want to share: Winter 2023 and Fall 2024 Winter 2023 The dal makhni was amazing. I felt it melt in my mouth. The chicken was also very good. There were 4 of us. Even though the food was a bit pricey, I felt that the money was worth the food. Which was why I really wanted to visit them again and treat my family. Fall 2024 I came back for another visit to treat my husband. The atmosphere was just as good as before and the service was very good. The food, however, was another story. The dal makhni was definitely not as I remember it. While the shrimp was good, all of the food were definitely not worth their cost. 18% gratuity for minimum 2 people?! Before, it was for minimum 6! Who decided that this was a good idea? There s expensive, and there s robbery. I d firmly say that we d been served with the second. If cost is not a factor, I d still think twice before eating here.
Excellent food, service and atmosphere!!
Delicious food and great ambiance
The mandatory 18% tip applied after tax is insulting to the customer
Visited last night, Oct. 5th and once again so impressed! From the atmosphere to the customer service and the food were just amazing. Absolutely will be back again!! Gorgeous dining!!
Saag lamb...
Whether you re dining in or taking out, India Gate consistently delivers an exceptional culinary experience. It s a true gem in St. John s for anyone craving authentic Indian food, with a welcoming atmosphere that makes it perfect for a casual meal or a special night out. Highly recommended!
Delicious food & awesome service. Best Chicken biryani had
This place is for rich individuals. However, I am not rich (yet). I placed a takeout. Ig thats why they didnt add 18% FORCEFUL tips I read in many reviews. I had testy biryani.
Eating here for years, food is amazing. Never had a bad meal, same staff there forever and the owner is a great guy.
No place to sit even the tables were empty and reservations was after an hour but he didn t get us a table
Real Indian food isnt being served here. Aalo Gobi was order, but it wasnt what I anticipated. Bits of gobi blended in with Manchurian sauce. Gobi ought to be seared and not bubbled. Shahi paneer, which I additionally had, was exceptionally sweet. Albeit the environment is wonderful, it is pointless when the food is costly and boring. Evidently they like to take tips; 18% tip is now remembered for the bill on the off chance that you wish or not when you eat in
I liked the people working there, that smile and the service. Food was not update the level. Food : 1/5
I didn t expect to find amazing Indian food in St. John s but this place was great. The food was very flavourful and had just the right amount of spice. Can t wait to go back.
Best Indian food Ive had in Newfoundland. Ordered the Thali which I felt was good value and really well cooked.
Excellent meal of Indian Food once again at India Gate. We moved to Ontario 5 years ago and have not found a better Indian restaurant. Parking: Lots of free parking on the street after 6:00 pm
1. Malai chicken tikka was dry and unappetizing, Bhindi masala was phika (insipid), daal makhani was good 2. Poor service: server was unengaged. We ordered more rotis at 9:05 pm and were told all the cooks had gone home. Usually servers do a round, tipping diners off to place last orders a few minutes before the kitchen closes. Promised more pappads and then didn t deliver. 3. Forced 18% gratuity for any table with 2 or more diners is ridiculous. Haven t ever seen this before in Canada but assume it s because of the poor service, otherwise people wouldn t tip. 4. Interior/ decor is run down and dirty.
Authentic Indian food is not being served here. Gobi Manchurian was ordered, however it wasnt what I expected. Pieces of gobi mixed with Manchurian gravy. Gobi should be fried and not boiled. Shahi paneer, which I also had, was very sweet. Although the atmosphere is pleasant, it is useless when the food is expensive and bland. Apparently they like to steal tips; 18% tip is already included in the bill if you wish or not when you dine in
Amazing experience here. Thank you Dennis for the hospitality ambiance and food quality
The food is absolutely fantastic. Elegant setting and service. Nice muted atmosphere although a little noisy when full. Expensive: dinner for 2 without alcohol was $100. Tip of 18% is added automatically.
18% tips is really a force. It should be customers discretion. 5-10% is fine.
Vegetarian options: Munchurian Paneer sabzi Naan Food : 3/5 |
Proper dining and Indi food options
I don t know how this place got such good rating but I am extremely disappointed with their food. We specifically asked for mild spicy food and they said they could make it and post coming to our hotel when we ate it, it was too spicy for a person who asked for mild food. I have acid reflux condition and it triggered my symptoms. I ended up having regurgitation although I didn t eat full meal. When I noticed that food is spicy I just ate small portion and left most of it. It still affected me and left me with symptoms. Why they say they would make mild food if they can t make it?? Why???
My friends and I were there yesterday and we had a nice meal, but unfortunately we were pretty disappointed in the service. When we asked to split the bill, the server told us that we were tangly and the paperwork to do so was not worth it. It s actually funny because when you dine in there, you are expected to tip 18% mandatorily and then get this kind of service. We paid $17 in tips forcefully when we were not satisfied. I thought tips were meant to be like an appreciation for someone giving an excellent service, here they are entitled to it. It seems like there is no incentive to do their job well. I am not dining in your restaurant again.
Our dining experience at India Gate restaurant was nothing short of exceptional. From the moment we stepped inside, we were greeted by a warm and inviting atmosphere that immediately made us feel at home. The staff were incredibly friendly and accommodating, ensuring that our every need was taken care of throughout the evening. The culinary highlight of our meal was undoubtedly the lamb biryani and chicken pakora. Each dish was a symphony of flavors, expertly spiced and cooked to perfection. The biryani was fragrant and tender, with succulent pieces of lamb that melted in the mouth. The chicken pakora was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, with just the right amount of heat to tantalize the taste buds. To round off our meal, we enjoyed a steaming cup of chai tea that was the perfect balance of rich, creamy, and aromatic. It was the ideal way to end our dining experience on a high note. Overall, India Gate restaurant exceeded our expectations in every way. From the delicious food to the friendly staff and inviting atmosphere, it was a dining experience that we wont soon forget. We look forward to returning soon to indulge in more of their mouthwatering dishes.
I dined in on a business trip to St. John s and had a wonderful experience. The food was absolutely delicious (Malai Kofta, Onion Kulcha, with each dish bursting with authentic Indian flavors. The staffs hospitality, or mehmaannawazi, was exceptional, making me feel truly welcomed and taken care of. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a taste of India served with warm hospitality!
Great food and super friendly staff
the top indian restaurant of St. john s. must try their tandoori dishes.
We went and the food was awesome .
I wasn t sure about going here based on some of the reviews, but I was extremely pleased that I did. The food and service were excellent, and the inside of the restaurant is much nicer than the outside. Yes, it is a little more expensive than you would pay in Vancouver or other big cities, but well worth the price. Overall, I was very impressed - great Indian food with exceptional service.
Awesome food and great service. Cant wait to go back again this summer and have myself the best East Indian food ever.
Had a lovely experience. We had the dinner for three and left stuffed with leftovers. Highly recommend this restaurant. Its has been a staple in downtown St. Johns for many years and the quality and service as remained high. Even in the middle of the week the dining room was full.
Been using this restaurant for years. Best Indian food in eastern Canada!
We went there to try bangladeshi food and we ordered Polao roast. It was delicious and spicy and we loved it! The portion was pretty big, chicken was well cooked. And we will come back to try beryani as well :)
Didn t have a reservation but they were able to get us in. The papadam with the chutneys (mango and carrot) were not fit to eat. The food took a while to come out. The chicken wings had a nice taste to it. The tandoori chicken was delicious but the chicken korma was a bit bland. Would definitely come back
Weve visted this location for the third time on 07012024, and still great food and service. Will be repeat customers. Delicious food.
The owner of restaurant is so irresponsible that they destroyed Christmas Eve, called them a week before for meal to Order and they never call back to confirm!!!! Worst client service they have !!! Waste of time and money!!!!
Very disappointed. Tried the prawn biryani. Could only taste chilli powder . Wouldn t recommend
My girlfriend and I ate here the other night. We had an outstanding waiter named Dennis, who made us feel very welcome. Ice water was on our table before we even asked, and the service overall was exemplary. The lamb is incredible.
Amazing as always! Very kind staff and owner.
Nice ambience for dine-in, white table cloths etc.,. Food is very good as well!
The best fine dining authentic Indian restaurant in the whole province Period Vegetarian options: Palak Paneer are other vegetarian dishes are available and top quality. Food : 5/5 |
Mandatory 15% tip is ridiculous. Average food . Only Samosa was worth praising.
Vegetarian options: Lots of vegetarian options Dietary restrictions: Great for people with gluten allergies or issues. Food : 5/5 |
Way overrated and overpriced for mediocre taste
This has been always one of my favorite places to go in St Johns but not anymore Service was good but the food wasnt much chop. They have lost their flavors the lamb I ordered was cooked separately from the sauce it should have been stewed in the soup was the same thing chicken added after the soup was poured. Honestly in my opinion it was not much better then something from a food court. The restaurant is very nice but I wanted a better meal. When we got our bill they informed us the tip of 15% was included in our total I discovered later that we tipped the hst amount as well. Not happy and wont be going back.
Ordered the lamb biriyani and it was dry as a bone, no sauce with the lamb and very little Indian taste with just a basic curried rice. Very disappointed in the food myself considering the price paid. Big lack of flavor that was expected. Wont be back anytime soon. Note to future customers that they charge a 15% gratuity on the tax in price of the food, very unreasonable. Didnt notice this till we left the restaurant unfortunately. The chef should stew the lamb in a sauce to enhance the Indian spices into the meat in my opinion. I would rate this at 1/2 star if I could. Parking: limited on street parking.
Great atmosphere, fantastic food Vegetarian options: Many vegetarian options, all very delicious Food : 5/5 |
I dont know what to say. When you will open the menu for dine in, this is the first thing you will be looking at. Thats really awkward, you are Forced to give 15% tip along with the minimum $25 order for per person order while all the meal are overpriced compare to any other locations who served Indian food in the city.
Food delicious, background music soothing. Service comes with a warm towel at the end of the meal. Excellent.
Food was nice service was good. The food was overpriced and then at the end to find out there was a mandatory tip was very disappointing. If we were 2 tables of 2 we wouldnt have had an extra 60 dollars added to the bill. If they cant handle serving 4 people at once maybe a new career is needed. Wont be going back.
Good tasting food - prices are a little high but the taste makes up for it. Definitely recommend the malai tikka and the chicken biryani.
Pricy but so, so, so good
Very nice food. We were in St Johns for 20 minutes and needed food. Everything tasted amazing 10/10. The staff is very friendly our server was Danielle she was so nice. She went above and beyond.
We went for diner here. The place is nice the food is wonderful. We thought it was pricy but when the food arrived it was totally worth it. I will definitely recommend this place for diner our server was super nice and friendly. Definitely worth visiting if you are looking for tasty food and a great experience. Vegetarian options: Many options available
Excellent food and service!!!
simply amazing and delicious, service is exceptional its a bit more expensive than other Indian restaurants but it worth every penny, we tried the soup, samosa, vegetables pakora as appetizers and all were delicious, then we had the meal for 4 which we barely ate half of it. we have a good lunch for next day. service is exceptional, our waitress went above and beyond to make sure we enjoyed our dinner, couldnt ask for better food or service.
Take out order Placed a large order for supper with guests at my home. All dishs were hot and fresh. Absolutely delicious, bold flavors large portions. Kept the left over sauces from different Currys to serve over rice for lunch for 2 days after. If I had the income I could eat here 7 days a week. Never a disappointment.
No Indian taste at all, jalfarezi was like a chicken manchurian. Biryani was not like a biryani at all, And why I have to pay 18% gratuity. (WTH) #never going again Food : 1/5
Love that place. Definitely it s not gonna go my last visit. Specially the server Daniel. She is excellent, well mannered who served us. Nice people makes ambience more nicer. Again best food in EAST coast side. Food
Excellent food and services
Ordered shahi paneer, malai kofta and kadhai paneer. Shahi paneer and kofta were good but both dishes had exactly same gravy. Kadhai paneer was way below average. Portions are also small.
They add an 18% tip to tables of two or more. If I tip that is my business and how much I tip is totally up to me. Disgusting and disrespectful to the customer. I will not return.
Been going there for years and for good reason, lovely atmosphere, great service and the food is always, simply delicious!
Best food Best Service
Food is good but 18% gratuity added automatically for 2 people is totally out of line in my opinion. Ive seen this added for large tables but never for only 2 people, and 18% is above the norm. I wont return to this place again. You can get indian food just as good at multiple places in town for less than half of what you pay here (even before the outrageous mandatory tip).
India Gate has it all: a very warm and classy environment; wonderful and super friendly staff (most of whom have been there well over ten years at least); very friendly and hands on owner; and the best tasting Indian food you can enjoy in Newfoundland and Labrador. It is very popular, and as we found out our first time there, a reservation is wise but not always necessary. Can t say enough about India Gate, other than thank-you. Brad and Katie
Sorry to hear that they don t have the lunch buffet anymore but food is still good.
Lovely restaurant, excellent food!
Authentic Indian food, very good service and a friendly staff. Good ambience, always great to be there.
Very good food and service. Do not like the mandatory 18% tip.
Everything was excellent, however we think we were forced to tip as 18% gratuity (my receipt was handwritten for 18% additional) which is not fair. We love to tip but not going back for 18% mandatory tip. Tip should be voluntary not to be forced
Top notch food and service at India Gate this evening!
Best butter chicken and garlic nan in the city hands down. The veggie samosas are to die for, if your looking for authentic flavor packed food, this is it.
I still have a pack of matches from the first time I was taken to India Gate. This place is near and dear to me and I have always made it one of my spots to eat when I came home to visit. Thankfully I live here now and I can frequent often! Its always a pleasure to eat here, as the food is so delicious and the service has always been fantastic. Try the butter chicken, its definitely one of the best, but the pakoras... THE best anywhere. And Ive been eating Indian food across Canada for more than decade. Thanks for being the best!!
Amazing food. Pricey but you get what you paid for. One of the best places in town.
Worst experience ever
Unwelcoming and unfriendly staff
Worst customer service i got ever. I will never recommend anyone.
The owner of the store was unfriendly.
I have tried lot of restaurants at Ontario Quebec n other part of canada but this restaurant is amazing.Their staff, food are excellent n delicious special the quality of bread even i didnt see this type of bread at india
Good food!!!
We love to go here when visiting St. Johns. The food is delicious and our server Kelly on this occasion made our meal a pleasurable experience. Order the garlic Naan bread with your meal!
I love the butter chicken combo. This is the favourite restaurant of several of my friends. My girlfriend s favourite dish is the Navaratna korma. We are counting down the days till the buffet returns.
Awesome place for both food and environment. The first ever Indian restaurant that I love in St. John s. Staff is very friendly. Overall it was a great experience and this wasn t my first time and won t be, will visit soon for sure. Keep it up guys thanks
We always get take out for our holiday parties and it is ALWAYS delicious!
Good India food and nice ambience.
I ve tired chicken biriyani,it was worst.
Most awful restaurant experience ever in St. Johns! Food tasted incredibly gross. Charged ambiguously high, and they placed a tip amount themselves. It was an absolute waste of money and, honestly worst experience ever. I was not given an option to choose the tip amount to tip the server! They put a tip on the top of the bill themselves! I will never be visiting that place again and wouldnt recommend anyone!
World class Indian restaurant right in St. Johns. Not only is the food top notch, the service is exceptional.
Amazing food ,Amazing service, what else is there to say !!
I loved this place try their butter chicken. Good for dining.
Feeling the need to escape the house on a Friday night, we walked to the downtown area for a nice meal. Having remember the last time we did this and finding the doors to India Gate closed for renovations, we thought we would try again. To our pleasant surprise, the restaurant was open and quite full. Fortunately, there was a table for two! Our servers were very professional and we were well attended for our meal. For those still concerned with Covid, all servers wore masks. We ordered the Dinner for Two which came with one choice of appetizer but with two plates ( this is confusing in the menu), two selections of meat dishes, a vegetarian plate, one of the simple rices and garlic naan. We did find the cost rather expensive having recently eaten a Dinner for Four at an Indian Restaurant in Halifax for the same we paid for two here. That said, our meal was quite good and one of the better I ve had recently. It was a little perturbing and presumptuous that a 15% tip was automatically added to the bill. While I didn t mind tipping, it should not be presumed that I will. Image if our service would have been poor and I had to ask to have the tip removed from our bill. Anyway, it was a wonderful meal with a wonderful decor and wonderful service. I would return.
Everything was delicious and the people very friendly. I highly recommend
Great food, tasty, and a lot to choose from. Love to order take out as well.
We have been coming to this restaurant since 1997 and it never disappoints. Fast, friendly service and the food... fabulous. Very authentic! We love this place!
Very good food with a perfect price
This is my favorite restaurant on planet earth.
Good food but overpriced
Mandatory 15% gratuity AND minimum order of $25 per person for parties of TWO OR MORE. If youre not eating alone, youre paying way too much. Totally unreasonable. Pass.
5 stars for the food. 3 stars for the service because they add 15% tip directly to your check and then give you an option to add additional tip while you pay on the machine. Im sure some people wont notice the 15% tip that was added initially and tip twice.
Great food, average service. We requested small modifications both the times we visited (different requests each time), both times they were completely ignored. Also, dont like the fact that they add a compulsory tip and then their machine asks for more when you tap to pay.
Delicious food and great service
Love this place. Been coming here for over 20 years and the experience gets better every time. Restaurant is spotless, the staff is great and the food is the best I have had all over Canada. Would 100% recommend!!!
Great restaurant, ambiance, food and service everything is amazing.
Love this place, my favourite Indian resto in St. Johns. The Lamb Vindaloo is actually pretty spicy, I find most spicy dishes in NL are not spicy at all. All the dishes Ive tried have been very tasty. The naan is exceptional, crisp, with a light, fluffy interior. They also have Kingfisher, which is necessary when having a curry.
Too costly & taste was okay..
Amazing....as usual!
You Have a Krishna Ji statue And sell Beef Alongside. Please It Hurts the sentiments of a lot of people.Either Remove The Statue or Remove Beef from your Menu.Other than that, food was great, No complaints.
Very Bad Service 0 rating
We thoroughly enjoyed our meal at Indian Gate this week. We were welcomed by friendly staff, who even provided my 5 year old daughter and I with cozy blankets because we chose to sit close to the door. The butter chicken, prawn saag, garlic naan and vegetable samosas were all delicious and presented beautifully. The customer service was exceptional. We would highly recommend Indian Gate to anyone visiting St. John s.
Recent Dine-in visit: I wanted to give them one more try but this time decided to go for dine-in instead of takeout. Dine-in was a pleasant experience. The ambiance and background music was good. Food was delicious and spicy. I guess the key is to ask your server to prepare the food Indian spicy or maybe they changed their cook? The food definitely turned out better this time compared to my takeout experience. A bit pricey but overall was satisfied with the food and would go again. Previous takeout experience in Feb 2022: If you are looking for authentic Indian food you would be disappointed. Had a take out yesterday for chicken vindaloo, chicken bhuna, and Navratna curry. Chicken vindaloo was a mash up of chicken, different vegetables (who puts veggies in a chicken dish) and watery curry. Not at all rich creamy curry full of Indian spices that I was expecting. Same goes for chicken bhuna, it is a dry dish with masala, not a curry. Navtrana curry was tasteless and runny. Also its pricey compared to the quality and authenticity of the food. It does not live upto the standards set at other authentic Indian restaurant I have been too.
15% tip is mandatory. That s totally illegal and should be reported to authorities. Hope someone is reading and taking the notes , otherwise I will report it myself.
Amaaazzzing for 5 star customer service i thnk thats the worlds tastiest food thanks india gate for serving tooo delicious food
Great food. Numerous gluten free options!
Food was very flavourful, and service was amazing, I highly recommend for everyone! My only downside is that they play religious music while we are eating meat dishes.. Please change this.
Great ambiance (with Indian music, candle on table - actual candle not some fake LED), very very average food and not so good service. Oh, also very very expensive. I had a non-veg thali - fancy presentation with a half crescent serving plate (tanduri, onion pakoda, butter chicken (doesn t taste good), lamb curry (good taste), rice, chole (chickpeas, not tasty), palak-paneer (not tasty), payesam - I have never had payesam with raw kaju and raisins on top, dry-fruit was always cooked/boiled in milk) plus a gate special naan and two glasses of red wine - my total bill was close to hundred Canadian! And then the service is well, I am a tourist here in St. John s, staying at a luxury hotel and very much love the service at my hotel restaurant. And I believe they get paid exactly the same as the server in India Gate. Appreciate if the owner brings some improvement in future. Loved the place, but it lacks the soul.
My husband was very disappointed with his lamb dish which appeared to have been cooked and recooked several times. The lamb meat was inedible and the rice was way overcooked, a Christian stew dish that was only half eaten.
Food is amazing, get the meal for two if you go with someone else - best bang for your buck for sure. Was able to take home enough for two lunches the next day and we left very full. Server was excellent but there were some delays on parts of our order and while we had agreed to leave in short order to get our reservation, the food took a while and we felt rushed to keep our commitment to leave by 7. Dietary restrictions: We went with somebody with celiac and they had no issues accommodating her.
The only place in town to get the authentic naan/ roti! Properly clay baked! Being from Toronto where every corner you can find authentic foods, this is by far the best Indian/ Pakistani foods in St. John s. always my first and last option for food that s close to home!
$8 for a bowl of rice
Our favourite place to eat. We always leave feeling the meal was worth every penny.
Best Restaurant for Ambiance, Exquisite blend of herbs and spices to suit every taste from beginners mild to the refined adventurous palates. Wonderful harmonious staff servers. Ive been going for the past nearly 30yrs and Still revel in their Exotic Saporous Cuisines.
Best Indian food in St.Johns! By far
just unbelievable
Amazing food!!
Fabulous Indian food. Samosas were excellent. Tandoori platter was just amazing. Loved it all!
Worst customer service. Very rude manager. Asked for a mask for one of my friend they give a used mask. It had hair in it. And they refused that they gave used and being very rude. Worst experience ever. Will never recommend anyone.
Asked for mask and one of the guy works there gave me used mask with hairs in it and said was new mask .Got racial comment because i asked for mask .it was really bad experience and dont recommend any person to go there.
Very bad customer service. Less quantity very expensive .
Very rude to customers . Very expensive
Bad experience and my friend got racial comment because he wore Turban and asked for mask , the guy Indian manager was really rude.
Our 2nd time that confirmed the food and service is in fact consistently good. So much so that this has become our go to restaurant for Indian food.
Great food and service. A/C was too high.
Great quality food, Love the atmosphere, great presentation of the food and staff was outstanding.
this establishment had a huge hype to live up to and it absolutely surpassed all expectations
Finally got to dine-in after dozens of takeout and its even better..didnt think it was possible. Great service, great food and we had an absolute fantastic time last night.
Good food and good service. Portions are large!
Delicious food, friendly staff and ambience. Definitely worth visit to this restaurant for Indian food.
Good food, service and ambiance
This place was amazing! We were a group of 6 and we arrived at the restaurant very late and close to closing time but they still served us. The service was great, the food was really flavourful and spicy! All in all a good experience. Our favourites were the onion kulcha, chicken nilgiri, chicken briyani, and cod roganjosh!
Great Indian food but it is priced higher than downtown Toronto! This is technically the best quality Indian food in town, however there are a couple other options (check my other reviews) that are much more reasonably priced and almost as good. Edit: I respectfully disagree that the portions are large . The portion sizes here are average or even on the small size, especially for the price.
Great food and service.
Great ambiance. Superb service. The food was fantastic. A bit spicy. But served so warm and with such care that I definitely over ate. While we waited for the food the staff brought out some papadam. They brought it out. With a mango chutney that was mouth watering. As well as a tomato option others at the table gravitated towards. We tried the spicy paneer appetizer. Onion Bhaji. The laccha parantha and tandoori Roti were well prepared. The dal and saag were really good but a bit spicy. Definitely worth a try.
Always a good experience. Would surely say best Indian food in NL. Lamb Jalfrezi and anything with Paneer is pretty good.
Fantastic. We will be back, the food and service was amazing.
Good food and ambience. A lot of authentic Indian dish to choose from. Our server was very friendly and nice to us. One of a kind in St. Johns. Keep up the good work India Gate.
Always an incredible experience.
Super frustrated with their lamb biriyani.. taste like simply khichuri, and found most of the spices weren t blended properly. I asked medium spicy but it was extremely spicy, The only thing we loved was kulfi.
Nice dining room with a menu that has plenty of options. Food was delicious and portions were generous. Service was very friendly but a little slow the evening we were there.
If you can look past the relatively high price, the quality of the food is certainly good. However, the service was beyond slow on the night myself and two others went. Without exaggeration, we were there for nearly three hours from sitting down to leaving. The good food is certainly not worth this wait.
This is not a casual restaurant based on the prices - upon opening the menu the owners have a statement that all diners must spend at least $25/each to sit in the dining room. That alone was a flag and we almost left, but we wanted to try our first experience of Indian food in NL (recently moved here). The 2 of us shared 2 appetizers, 3 vegetarian dishes, and had two drinks each: $150 with tip. Casual it is not. The Chaat appetizer is a cold mix of pastry that has the consistency of Chex cereal mixed with a cream sauce that lacked any tartness of Chaat. The Alloo Tikki could be a doorstop. The Baigan Masala had no smokiness. The Paneer Jalfrezi did not have the pillowy softness of true homemade paneer, and finally, the Navrattan Jalfrezi was runny and lacked the richness of a creamy cashew sauce. And their hotness scale is not efficient: medium is not hot; not even a traditional medium. Id suggest they make a good in-house spicy pickle for guests who like things hot. The only bright spot was our server: personable, attentive, and professional.
Always delicious! Be sure to place an order well in advance if its for takeout (sometimes days ahead).
The worst restaurant, they just have good ambience other than that the staff and the owner itself is rude. We placed our order and we waited for 1.5 hours and then we contacted them, they said it will take 15 minutes. After this we said cancel our order then the person came, we do not know whether he was Owner or Manager, he started yelling at us and showed us attitude, said ok cancel the order. Everybody needs respect and they are pathetic, how can a person says such things and shows off, just because today he is settled and have good business. They should never forgot their roots and values. Disgusting restaurant! Shame on you!
Customer Service absolutely ridiculous pick up order wait time 2 hour
Best indian food in town, hands down!

Great good and service
Enjoyed the Lamb curry! Tasted like home (Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa)
Consistently delicious food and excellent staff- especially Danielle! Prices are high but the quality backs it up. Comparable to India Gate restaurant in Istanbul- will return!
Gorgeous food served in perfectly sized portions and it was delicious! A solid meal if youre hungry and lots to take home if youre not. The atmosphere is super lovely! So many stellar little details make the place a highly enjoyable place to dine. On top of that, we had some of the best service Ive ever received. Kelly is a fabulous waitress and is super efficient, attentive, and personable! I highly recommend this place!!
It was the best food I had from any India food I ever ate. Service and atmosphere was great. I will go back again. Thank you India Gate.
Great food, excellent service. Highly recommend.
The best Indian restaurant on the island.
Amazing food! Dont let the prices deter you because your taste buds will be satisfied. Nice atmosphere in the restaurant as well, relaxing, not to noisy even when busy but thats likely due to everyone too busy eating.
Absolutely fantastic food a great service. 10/10 would recommend to anyone who loves indian food or wants to try something new!
In town from the West Coast of NL and had a fantastic meal at India Gate. Great customer service, quick to get our food and fantastic, ambient atmosphere. If you can handle a little heat its definitely a place to visit !!
