Had supper here with a large group of about 20 and the service was awesome; we were all drinking and nobody had to wait for a fresh drink. The food was delicious- the cauliflower bites were so good even my friend who doesn’t like vegetables liked them! I had the special which was pan fried cod and it was perfectly done and crispy. We had finger foods out that were devoured, and I couldn’t turn down desert- I had the nutty phyllo desert and it was AMAZING. The owner, Bernie, came out and chatted with us and made everyone feel at home. 10/10 would eat here again!
So, I am a lover of Magnum and Steins and have been for a long time. I am so disappointed to have to write this review. Five of us went there for a friend's birthday recently and we were served raw chicken. They redid the chicken for us after some of us had already consumed it. The people who had eaten the raw chicken couldn't bring themselves to even try the new batch. What was even more surprising is that they charged us for it. They didn't comp anything. We received an apology from our wonderful server but that was it. We spent $600 at the restaurant that night. The rest of the food was good, but it was outdone by the raw chicken and the lost opportunity to make it right.
I went here with family, sadly it was very cramped, and hot. We were sat downstairs next to a big table and that did not help the already small area, the waitress was a sweetheart and really helped the atmosphere, we hand the calamari, onion rings and potatoe skins for starters. The calamari was a bit bland for me, the onion rings were so weird, they must have pickled the onions or something because it was such a insane experience, I’ve never tasted something so salty and just down right wrong before. As for the potatoes, they were great! They were a bit too much for just one person so I recommend ordering it and splitting. They were well cooked and really delicious. As for main courses, it was also underwhelming, fish taco-good, stake- okay, rack of lamb- bad.
I usually leave good reviews for restaurants even if the food is not that good, but this one is different. The food came out cold and tasted bad. I asked for it to be reheated which was but was still horrible. I politely left the food and asked for the bill and they still charged me for the food that I didn’t eat. I would definitely not recommend going here and if you see my profile, you’ll see that I mostly leave 5 star reviews for everyone.
Dropped in last night unexpectedly, 3 couples. Got seated right away and our hostess was excellent, wine and drinks came quickly. She was very attentive and fun to speak with. Our food was absolutely delicious and we were all served at the same time. We love this place and would highly recommend this restaurant!
The food is delicious and the service was superb. We couldn’t have asked for a better server! The duck nachos and bread served with pumpkin pie butter were especially good!
Not fussy. We had reservations at 7 but we're able to get in at 645 and take advantage of the happy hour specials. She ordered a Starburst martini while I sipped on a long Island ice tea. We ordered appetizers, duck confit nachos and the potato skins. They tasted great but the nachos were quite small and the potato skins are literally 3 halves of potatoes. Pretty sure we were the youngest people there besides the servers, the next youngest person after myself looked to be 15 years older. We felt very out of place. The menu was also minimal but didn't have so many options different outside of most restaurants locally. The meal of two drinks and two appetizers came out to about $50, the drinks were as expensive as the aps. Their wine menu was quite extensive except we aren't wine drinkers so this probably isn't the place for us. I don't think we'll be returning any time soon, there is literally nothing else on their menu I would like to try that I can't have anywhere else.
My partner and I enjoyed dinner at Magnum and Steins last night and it was fantastic. We had the duck nachos to start which were highly recommended by friends and they did not disappoint, definitely the highlight of the night! For mains I had the fish of the night, which was a cod dish. The dish was prepared very well. My partner had the pasta of the night, which was a chicken based pasta dish which was quite good! For desert we had the chocolate flourless torte which was superb. Our server Laura was friendly, helpful but a bit slow at points, however she had many tables. She gave us great recommendations, and even surprised us with our mains and wine pairings. The restaurant was clean, and the atmosphere was intimate. Would recommend
I was at tha bar down below. It was awesome. The food was perfect, the atmosphere, amazing, the staff..the best.
Spent 5 nights at the hotel, got to know the staff at the basement bar, fabulous hard working bunch.
Great food in an intimate atmosphere
We ate at the bar and had the confit duck nachos which were quite good! Unfortunately the beer tap wasnt working and they only had cheap bear in bottle and an old and ordinary wine selection. We ended up leaving after the appetizer and eating elsewhere as there was not a whole lot on the drinks menu and a couple things missing on the food menu as well. I think the place would need to update its menu as it is the same as I remember it being 10 years ago! I wasnt fond of the sombre bar atmosphere but thats common in St Johns. Service was great!
Best fish and chips that Ive had in a long time! Awesome service thanks Ben!!!
We had a nice dinner here with some friends. The service was friendly and efficient. The menu was OK, I chose the fish and chips, which were excellent except that they put the fish on top of the fries, so it made the fries a bit soggy. The fish was crusted with salt and vinegar chips super crispy and delicious.
Huge portions, great service, fresh seafood. Salmon could be more flavorful Food
Delicious food with great service.
When I booked online I reserved upstairs dining room , which I guess wasn t available because we were sat downstairs. Bread and butter were both served fridge cold, so very difficult to spread. We had about 2 bites each of the phyllo brie app and sent it back (the sauce was kind of bitter and weird), and the waiter left it on our bill which I found strange. Mains were ok, I had a seafood fettuccine which was good but the portion was small and it was light on the seafood. My partner had the chicken which she found chewy and the veg to be under seasoned, but she did like the sauce. Tiramisu was pretty good. Drinks were good but bar service was a little slow. Our waiter was brutal. Very inefficient and lack of attention. Not served water until we asked for it when our mains came and were never offered a refill, he knew next to nothing about the menu or drinks (could not answer any questions), and seemed irritated when my parter asked for a knife to cut her chicken. The restaurant itself was cold and the dreary piano music didn t help the atmosphere much. I paid our $200 bill and we then went up the road to No. 4 where we had another round of food and drinks and left much happier. I d say skip this one.
Beautiful spot, great service and amazing food. Loved the duck nachos.
Food was great. I bought gift cards from Costco, I couldnt understand why they didnt give change on the gift cards. it shouldnt matter were i bought them. This should not be there policy.
830 reservation, didnt get inside till 9 so waiting out in the cold with many other patrons...that is poor service...then 30 min later a drink...pretty poor for a 300+$ bill
Kid-friendliness: We made a reservation weeks in advance for a birthday dinner. We explicitly told them we had a baby with us, several times. They told us they could accommodate a baby. We arrived and they very rudely told us there was no high chair. We spoke to two staff members and both were incredibly rude about the matter and didn t try to help or accommodate in any way. We ended up having to leave and go somewhere else. Not happy with the service at all.
Food was delicious.
My drink was good, hard to mess up a jack & coke. The food, ordered duck nachos, wings, and potato skins. Ill start with the wings, they were just OK, sauce was decent and cooked well. The duck nachos was a mess, the nachos were just out of the fat fryer, looked and felt that way, they were greasy and covered in shaved sweet duck... Nothing to balance out the greasy sweet taste. A nice home salsa might have helped. The potato skins looked like theyd taste wonderful, but were bland and quite disappointing. If I had to put a number on things itd be like this. Wings 6/10 Duck nachos 3/10 Potato skins 2/10
Four of us ordered differing mains: lamb, chicken, salmon and fish. We all loved, loved our meals and wings and salad starters were perfection. Service was perfect, as was value, at this inviting locally owned eatery.
Terrible front of house, she did not acknowledge me, proceeded to discuss with waitress who had what table. Then another waitress asked for help, she said she was busy - is she a family member ? Waiter Ian and the food is the only reason this is not 1 star.
First time here, did the Mothers Day brunch. Had a new server, he was pretty great, food was delicious and beer was nice and cold. Only thing keeping it from a 5 is everything was served on a small sides plate and it made eating my main a bit difficult.
Love this place. Best Halibut I ever had. The steak is amazing as well. Have the Duck Confit whule you wait for your mains.
Well, we have been dining at Magnum & Steins, off and on, for 20 or more years. Experiences have always been super but tonight s was a bit of a downer. We went for the advertised Happy Hour and from the outset it was more hijack hour . Maybe I don t get out enough but happy hours to me imply 2 for 1 specials or similar. The red wine special tonight was Tripache Malbec 5 oz glass regular price of $9.50 for the low, low price $8.75 [And there was no pan fried Cod option to boot]. I understand that the restaurant business is tough but in my opinion you need to build in a little more Joy into the pricing of your advertised Happy Hour specials.
We were blown away. Food was perfectly done. Dasha was our server and she was excellent, giving just the right amount of attention, but friendly and welcoming. I fear we closed the restaurant after two bottles of wine and she never made us feel rushed. But the food! Everything we had was perfect, from the calamari to the crème brûlée. We had a delicious lobster and even the julienned vegetables were perfect! Imagine taking the care to make veggies delicious under a lobster! I m kind of glad we found this place at the end of our trip because any other restaurant would have paled in comparison.
We had a wedding dinner at Magnum and Steins last night. 14 people in a private room. It was incredible! Our wonderful server John was magnificent! Always pleasant and accomodating...the food was delicious and drinks were delivered quickly. Every staff person we encountered was great...and all wished us Congratulations. John...we cant thank you enough...you were exceedingly kind and patient. Service above and beyond... Thanks again Tina and Doug
Didnt know what to expect turned out fabulous
I usually only write reviews when I feel others will benefit from my experience and sadly in this case it will be negative on several levels. This is one of those places where the prices ought to reflect the quality and service. i.e. Its a bit pricey. It was a Saturday night at 8pm, the server read out the evenings specials with great speed, and enthusiasm. My wife immediately perked up to the mention of halibut. She asked for clarification on the included potato croquettes because shes not a big fan of goat s cheese, but was told the goat s cheese in the croquettes (with prosciutto) was not very noticeable and was largely masked by the prosciutto anyway. She ordered that, and when it came out it was halibut laying on top of what where simply whole smashed baby potatoes - no croquettes. The server, still believing they must be croquettes simply explained away the absence of goat s cheese or prosciutto by saying it must be mixed in. Now, while the fish was very good and overall nothing wrong with the dish, as one of the nights specials its pretty bad that the kitchen still had the servers describing that dish incorrectly. Strike 1. I ordered the beef striploin with fries. You usually can t go wrong with a properly grilled strip. When it arrived I immediately flagged our primary server down to point out it looked to be a piece of beef tenderloin. She didn t know one way or the other, only that it was the strip that was normally served with fries, and the tenderloin with mashed. She checked with the kitchen, and sure enough it was described as a California thick cut striploin. Google confirmed such a thing, and I accepted I had been schooled. On to the eating. :-) I ordered it med-rare. I cut one piece off (with great effort) and started to chew, and it was so tough that I didn t put the second piece I cut off (with equalled great sawing) into my mouth. (bear in mind this goes for $48). I flagged the server again, and sent it back as inedible. Strike 2. We discussed what she could offer that would be quickest and I settled on the halibut, since I had tried what my wife had. It arrived after my wife and another companion were already finished eating. This too had none of the specials described croquettes; a point I mentioned later to help her avoid saying the same to new customers. The halibut, unfortunately had not received the same love that my wife s had but instead was dry and over cooked particularly on the bottom where it was difficult to cut through, as if in an attempt to get it out quickly more heat was used. Who knows? Regardless, I was in no mood to send it back at that point and at least it was edible unlike the beef. Strike 3. We were buying some of the most expensive offerings and drinks; having wine (between three people: 3 glasses + a half litre wine & a beer) It s well known that wine is the biggest margin item used for offsetting the slim margins often made on food. I say this because, despite our difficulties with this food, we were offered no discount at all. We had a bad experience at a high price point, and a rather large inconvenience. The only response to my inedible beef striploin meal was just another meal that was subpar on which I had to wait. Strike 4. Your repeat customers in a town as small as St. John s are the only means to building a reliable revenue stream. You would think that large cities like NY, with droves of tourists would care less, but not so. Do anything to upset a first time customer (which we were not), and they won t be back. We ll give it a year or two, or change of management before we return again. The third in our party cannot eat seafood, milk products, or most meat proteins. She can only digest chicken or veg etc. Therefore, she was limited in her choices to two dishes: a simple salad and a stuffed tomato. The only chicken dish on the menu was done in (and I can only assume) resting in a cream based sauce. They could not (or would not) make any accommodation using any other chicken preparation. Many restaurants routinely do so. Strike 5.
Although the servers were great the food nor the location was up to par. We were initially seated in the dining room and that area was nice and clean but we opted to move to the patio before we actually had a look at it. The patio seating area is very small and in need of a cleaning or paint job as it looks like it hasnt had any work done in years. Our first seat had water dripping on us from an AC unit positioned above the table and even after we moved it was very uncomfortable from the home made picnic style seating. We ordered the Duck nachos as we have had them in the past and those were great, but the real issue was in the grilled meat platter. Most of the platter was OK but had very little seasoning. The chicken on the other hand was burnt on the outside but raw in the middle. (Its takes a skilled cook to pull that off) Unfortunately we did not notice the raw chicken until after we had eaten some of it. This resulted in my wife getting food poisoning and very sick later that night. We did bring the raw chicken to the servers attention and nothing was done other then stating that must have been a thick piece. This is not acceptable but as we were not sick at that time we let it go. For a main we had the salt and vinegar fish because we have had that in the past and loved it. This time however it seems that the recipe had changed and though it still tasted fine there was no taste of salt and vinegar. To say this was a disappointing anniversary dinner is un understatement and we have no plans to ever return.
It was getting late and we were hungry walk-ins. It took a few moments to get seated. The server was efficient. It was clean and quiet enough to have a conversation. A nice retreat from the noise of George St. We really enjoyed our meals of pan-fried cod.
A friend and I stayed in the rooms upstairs, and after a long day of traveling from Vancouver, decided to head down to the bar after dropping stuff off in our room. Im so glad we did! I had potato skins and the chicken wings. They were very tasty, and Gluten-free! I also had a fair amount of wine. :D The man behind the bar that night was attentive and kind (I think he even laughed at one of my jokes= very kind). As he grew up in the area, he also had a lot of fantastic recommendations. Some words about Blair: Not only is Blair really smart, but hes also super kind and generous. Ive heard him referred to as saintly and I wouldnt argue. I would suggest trying whatever drink/cocktail special they have when youre there. Theyre concoction wizards! For a few other nights, we had Ian serving us. He was also kind and attentive, and withstood friendly roasting quite well. I looked forward to our evenings downstairs at Magnum & Steins. Other staff members, and especially the manager, Kelly, really made us feel like family. It was so lovely, and theyre a major part of why I cant wait to head back to St. Johns. I could probably write a novel, but Ill settle for this short story.
Dock nachos are the best
My favourite place to eat when I am in town. The service is great and the food it top shelf. The staff are friendly and welcoming. The atmosphere in the lower section is the best.
Pleasant Friday evening, happy hour, background music a bit too loud. Wait time for food was unusually long but food was good. Will still recommend and definitely go back
Chicken burger very simple, not much flavour. Waited 1 hour for food. Server is nice
Great service and wonderful food. Loved the experience!
Service excellent, food excellent, atmosphere excellent.
Great experience, fantastic service and the food was wonderful.
If you are coming to St John s NL you must stop here for dinner. The drinks were heavenly and the food was divine! We had the beef tenderloin and the rack of lamb and have never tasted anything better. Thank heavens the Keg was booked up because this place was so much better. Try the Tiki Tia martini- it was amazing. It s best to call early for reservations to ensure a table as space is limited. Ask for Griffin- he ll take good care of you.
Had a work super there and the staff were all very nice. The food, atmosphere, and service were all fantastic. Didnt hear a single complaint from anyone.
Service was very slow but that is likely due to challenges with getting staff. Our waiter worked hard but restaurant was short staffed. My meal was okay others said they enjoyed theirs but some burger was way over cooked and not good. Cheese plate was $35 which was high.
Service was very good. Food was a little cold but not bad. And there was a very long wait between appetizers. My main complaint was I had booked this reservation with plenty of notice, and pacifically asked for a back room. I also had made a request for dessert of some sort of cake with no chocolate, or cheese. As I have allergies. The reason that I asked for a back room, was that I was taking my elderly father with me for my birthday supper. I had asked our server about it, and he said it was never booked. The night I booked the back room, the waiter wrote it down. It was very loud and the reason I wanted the back room, or in the back was because of my father. If it was just my husband and I, I wouldnt have mind. I am a little upset I never got dessert on my birthday, especially when I requested it. It was a very disappointing birthday. Im Very disappointed.
Well service was slow and the private room was not given as reserved. Plus my food was clod and small portion
Dietary restrictions: Gluten free options
AVOID - ESPECIALLY FOR HAPPY HOUR. GO TO THE DUKE OF DUCKWORTH ACROSS THE ALLEY. Especially if you re looking for fish and chips :) My boyfriend and I stopped in for their great happy hour from 5-7pm. However, they advertise appetizers for happy hour but don t inform you that not all appetizers are available for the discounted price. Despite the menu saying $9.95 appetizers, we ended up paying $16 for the calamari and we otherwise wouldn t have ordered. Upon getting the bill, we questioned this and we were told, No, that was not a happy hour item . We also ordered a sandwich and upon being informed that it didn t come with a side, we were asked if we wanted to add one. Thinking we would only be ordering a side of salad, an entree size came out that we ended up paying $15 for. The calamari was alright. The rest of the food was average at best. Service was slow and we got the calamari before our drinks. Strongly advising to spend your time and money elsewhere.
Amazing food. The won ton duck nachos are killer.
Slow, mediocre service - had to physically get up, chase down people to get wine refills. The food was one dimensional, just about everything we had lacked something bright like the fish tacos, they came on wet tortilla shells, tasted fishy and had no real defining flavour, was expecting a cilantro or lime - something bright but they were bland. The charcuterie board was dismal, tough unseasoned beef, 1 single smoked sausage that was rock hard. Duck nachos; again a pile of salty savoury duck meat on very greasy tortillas, nothing to contrast the meat, edible but not enjoyable. The best thing we had were the fresh raw oysters. All at a very high price, very disappointing.
Was wonderful Toby is the man! ( hot noods)
Excellent everything!!!
Did a great job of accommodating our group on short notice. Food and service were good!
Waited 25 minutes for the server in a hot restaurant. Left because I didn t want to waste more of my time.
Not excellent. We had a very rare kid free night so decided to take advantage of it and go out for a nice meal. The drinks were good and with the happy hour prices they weren t overly expensive. We got one of specials for our appetizer, a surf board of different small fish based bites. It was delicious, until I pulled a long hair out of my mouth after biting into a piece of calamari. That wasn t so delicious. For our mains we had the rack of lamb from the menu and one of the specials, fish a chips but the cod was battered with crushed salt and vinegar Miss Vicki s. That sounded interesting but the salt and vinegar chips didn t translate to any extra taste at all in the finished product. So in reality it ended up being no different from if they just panko crusted the cod. The chips part of the fish and chips were fine but the dressing and gravy was so salty that it made it nearly inedible. The lamb was decent, like nothing wrong with it really, but I honestly don t really remember much about it just a little over 12 hours after I ate it. So decent but kind of forgettable. I remember my wife saying that it tasted good when she tried it and agreeing with her, but that s about it. The dessert was good. Oreo cheesecake and some kind of chocolate and nut phyllo pastry thing. But the coffee we ordered with it never arrived. The server was good, pretty attentive and very apologetic about the hairy calamari. Doubt we ll be back.
I have to pass along a good review for my stay at the subject hotel (and attached restaurant Magnum & Stein from Sept 26th 2022 with departure on October 12th. All of the staff, and I want to particularly mention Marie who is the main contact at that location, -she did go above and beyond during my complete stay to ensure everything I needed was taken care of. Others in the housekeeping staff such as Jessie, Kelly, Adiana, Jennifer and Desire - they did an excellent job and were always willing to help with anything. Also have to mention the staff at the Magnum and Stein! One in particular is Blair. He was so courteous, friendly, and timely always- and there were times that the restaurant was totally full. He worked with and helped all the other servers that were working at any times. All of them, including, office, housekeeping and servers in the restaurant made everything so very pleasant and sure showed how smooth things can work if you work as a team - and they did that. Thanks so much to all of them. They made my trip very pleasant...Rosalie
We were in on Friday night and had a fantastic meal with the most wonderful server. She recommended the duck confit nachos as an appetizer and they were fantastic! The fish and chips were excellent, however, the baked halibut was amazing! Thank you!
Food was amazing. Oven baked Halibut, fish and chips and duck confit nachos were phenomenal. Highly recommend!
You have to dine here! What a way to start our first trip to the Rock. Food was spectacular, we had a shared seafood board to start, salmon and a seafood pasta. Wine list was great, even had a wine from my favorite Ontario winery Closson Chase. The service provided by Griffen was outstanding
My favourite thing about St. John s is the Duck Nachos @ Magnum & Steins!
Lovely meal with work colleagues
This place has restored my faith in Canada regarding dining. The service (a young man named Blair) and the food were as good as Ive experienced anywhere in the world. Very reasonably priced for such fine dining.
One of the best place in town for quality fine dine food Staff was amazing too Thanks guys
Food was delicious and very well presented. Our waitress was fantastic
Great food and service.
A lovely experience! Great selection of seasonal specials with excellent wine pairings for each. Cozy atmosphere with attentive staff.
So very nice to be out for a great meal. Entree of fresh halibut was excellent. Super service as well.
Made a reservation asked for a private table got put in a corner and my girlfriend was seated by the busiest intersection of the resturant and it was her birthday, was seated next to the most obnoxious table Ive ever been next to in my life literally could not even hear my girlfriend or the waiter, what a terrible experience! Will never ever be going back! What a awful dining experience would not recommend! Save your money go to Burger King instead!
Bar area downstairs was a great soot for supper. Server very knowledgeable andxattentive all evening. Food delicious. Especially duck tacos!
What an absolutely awsome night, I have spent a lot of years traveling the planet as a business traveler... eating in many different type of establishments in a many countries... I have to say that this is an extremely well run business, the cuisine is outstanding, the service staff is nothing less than benchmark. Fine dining services is somewhat of an art, take years of experience to be really good at it, I would like to commend Laura for being the absolute best! Also, I should mention our driver Gilbert from Affordable Limousin..awsome!!!
Fantastic Atmosphere with superb service. Food was prepared perfectly and will leave you wanting to return to try more.
While the fare here may be a bit pricier, its well worth it! Quality seafood, quality steaks. Been here in 2019, and the staff were hospitable and top notch!
Would recommend, kinda pricey for some of the dishes. Extensive wine list. Lots of mixed drink choices. Had a nice stop for a beer and some quick food on the patio. Wait staff are quick, warm, polite and coordinate well. Started with a little complimentary bread and salted maple butter. I had housemade fettuccine pasta on a light tomato sauce with fresh basil, parm and olives topped with a properly grilled chicken breast - Yum! The fish soup was a miss, long on seafood (good), short on flavor (not so good), maybe they could try a more traditional fish soup next time. It was properly cooked, I just wasnt into the recipe. Have eaten some of the pub grub here before which was tasty. As someone else has mentioned, they have a very active set of specials which is great. Would recommend a visit.
I d give 10 stars if I could. This restaurant is one of the best dining experiences in St. John s. If you re a local, here on business or a tourist this is definitely a must try culinary delight. The food is always on point and Bernie, Laura and staff are honestly amazing. They always seem to go that extra mile Try the Duck Confit Nachos, what a gem. Beef is always a hit as well as their fish selections. I ve read some people who have eaten in the lower bar mention they felt a little crowded. If you are someone that likes their space be sure to book upstairs. If you like bumping elbows and a little more upbeat atmosphere reserve the lower bar! That s where we always eat (or the patio in season). Just wanted to leave a review for an excellent locally owned & operated gem! If you haven t been, get up off the couch and make a visit. You ll have a wonderful meal with wonderful people. #supportlocal
Food was delicious. Short staffed the night we attended little bit of a wait but worth it.
Great atmosphere in old St. Johns serving a combination of Traditional fare and modern dishes. Large portions and great service. This restaurant comes highly recommended.
Went here for my fiances birthday. Reservation at 745pm We were seated in the basement, it was pretty loud but we got some delicious martinis and enjoyed each others company. We ordered our starters and our mains just after 8 and did not get our starter until after 9. The food was excellent we had the surfboard platter, however we did not receive our mains until 45 minutes later . I dont know if this place is just severely understaffed or something. I think we would have significantly enjoyed our experience more if we werent waiting 45+ minutes between each order. We could tell our waitress was working very hard and seemed like she hadalot on her hands just hope the service speeds up! However the meals were wonderful.
This restaurant has sadly gone downhill. We went there for our anniversary. This was perhaps my 6th visit to the restaurant over the years. We started with their signature fish soup. We always had this to start. It was bland at best.we also ordered wings. Again very rubbery and uncooked. I told the waitress but she didn t really care how I felt. It costs us over $10 for 5 small wings. We were looking forward to their signature strip loin but they took it off the menu. We had their fish and chips. It resembled frozen fish sticks from the grocery store. We always liked going here as it was a medium to high end restaurant but now it s merely pub grub and it don t even aspire to that bar. I m sorry have to post this but I was extremely disappointed. Hopefully they will improve for their sake.
Easily the worst resto experience of the year . Loooong waits like over 2 hours on a couple of main dishes, no apologies , expensive , dry , salty flavourless. The cocktails used cheapest going brown liquor. Shrimp like rubber. Apparently catelli makes hand cut pasta just for mag and stein .not going back.
Anoyingly loud. Drank bee and left
Wonderful!
Great service... food was not as great as first time we went but was still very good!
Lovely life great food and great service
Most ppl I know have the same complaint about magnum and steins that the wait for food is way too long. When asked about when your food is coming you are made to feel as if there is something wrong with you and an hour and a half to 2 hours is an acceptable wait time. It s not and other restaurants in St. John s do not make you wait that long. But I was informed by the staff that it was. I haven t been there in years due to the same complaint but after returning for a birthday celebration last night, it s clear that the time wait for your order is still the same. Also had to ask for water and bread numerous times. Very frustrating and disappointing.
Delicious! Beef tenderloin was cooked to perfection
Delicious food!! The lamp of racks is amazing!! Definitely would recommend this place to anyone who is looking for good food with a great ambience.
I enjoyed my food but not everyone at my table said the same. We were in the lounge area which is not big and I wouldnt recommend it for a table over 4 people. Also if you are a bigger person the chairs are not comfortable. The chairs actually for the space probably contribute to the lack of space to move around.
Best kind.
We were trying to find lobster.... harder than you think. One restaurant recommended this place. We were under dressed, but they took us in with open arms anyway, fed us a delicious meal and made us feel welcome. Highly recommended!
Great food, friendly, helpful staff
Fish and chips was really good and big portions, the wait was the problem. 2.5 hours before the entrees came, over 3 hour night in total. Three plus hours in the same seat at a table puts a negative spin on the experience.
Very wonderful experience . The staff are very friendly and mad me feel welcome . The food also was outstanding ! It s my favorite restaurant. I will be back for sure.
A little overpriced for the quality, service was great!
You must try the duck confit nachos.
Great meal. Great service!
Great service, great food, lovely and quiet place to chat with friends.
Delicious meal, loads of specials... Will go back.
Incredible food and drink, lovely atmosphere and knowledgeable, friendly staff. Cant wait to go back!
Amazing night at mags. The duck nachos excellent. Oysters rocker fella excellent. Love this place one of st.johns fineness. Can t wait to see ya again.
Really delicious food
Happy Birthday to me. My wife took me to dinner with stake tartar, rack of lamb, and a delightful cinnamon bun desert. Delicious. Great service
Average menu, a lack of taste and very expensive.
Nice location and atmosphere. The menu seems to have changed over the years and its less upscale. Fish and Chips as an addition to the evening menu seems to to sum it up. Not the way I remember it from past visits. Not bad, just not as expected.
Amazing seafood soup. Great cocktails
Consistently good food. Definitely will be going back to take advantage of their happy hour specials.
A bit of a mixed review, the mussels were by far the best Ive had, the burger was dry and tasteless.
The service here is amazing. Our waiter was able to remember the entire menu, and then remember what you ordered without writing it down. Food was absolutely delicious; as were the drinks.
Good service but very limited after hours menu
Great food and service. They were very accommodating of our large (16) group.
Pasta was delish...
Excellent service and great meal
Great food, ambit and superb service. Really enjoyable dining experience
Ate in the lounge on a Friday evening. Atmosphere, service, food and folks were excellent. Duck confit nachos and halibut taco were to die for. Thanks folks. We will be back for sure.
The food was excellent and the service great the staff was very friendly definitely looking forward to going back there again
Love this place. Always great food!
Nice place. good food.
Excellent food
This was our first time eating at this restaurant. We made a reservation through Open Table...Upon arrival I was greeted by a friendly hostess who told us we would be seated downstairs. She lead us downstairs and once we were seated we realized this was a huge mistake as it was extremely loud and after 5 minutes of trying to ignore the noise (myself and my husband couldnt even hear each other) we asked to be moved somewhere more quiet. The waiter lead us upstairs to a table in a very quiet corner which was just what we were looking for. We ordered a cocktail and took our time browsing the menu and listening to the long list of specials for the evening which was great in my opinion. We ordered our meal and at no time throughout were we rushed. The service was excellent! Now lets talk food! We shared a seafood board for our appetizer which was delicious and definitely enough for 2 people. For our main course I had the seafood special which was Halibut and my husband ordered the Lamb. We loved both! We were too full for desert! Yes I would recommend this restaurant and we will return but will definitely make sure we have a table somewhere quiet! Overall a wonderful date night for us.
Disappointing meal. Not as good as it used to be.
We went last Friday 11 Jan 19 and service was excellent. However, the music was a touch too loud and really didnt fit with the atmosphere. I would suggest something like jazz or perhaps pop gone classical so I can focus more on the wine, food and who Im with. Kitchen was having some problems bringing out the food so we ended up being there for just over 2 hours. Food was hot and good when it came out. The duck nachos were unbelievable, I would go back there just for the nachos. Wine selections and pairings were well done! And staff were able to suggest good pairings for specials. Overall a good experience however I was pretty hungry by the time I got my main so I cant say it was amazing as it wasnt a fair judgement at that point.
Quite possibly the best steak i have had in any restaurant, service from Blair was as good as the steak.
Excellent meal!
My wife and I went for a NYE meal and they completely dropped the ball. They screwed up our meals - ended up eating at a separate time than my wife - and even charged us $6 for two little cups of coffee. What fine dining establishment charges for little cups of coffee anymore?!?!! Then they even had the nerve to suggest an almost $40 gratuity on our bill!!!! I suggest to stay away from this place. Plenty other places around St. Johns with much better service!
The food was incredible, from the app to the entree and dessert all eight of us were delighted. The wait staff were super. There food is the best in this city, hands down, highly recommend.
Upscale restaurant in St. Johns. Good service, small creative dishes. Good for special occasions
One of my favourite spots to eat in the city
Delicious !
Group of 4. Lots of menu choices and many specials. Ate mostly from the happy hour menu but will definitely go for specials next time. Nice atmosphere and great service. Food was tasty and portions good. Went with happy hour menu because of prices but description of daily specials made our mouths water. Enjoyed the cocktails as well only one flavor that didnt please! Well return!
First time visitors. Would recommend a visit, but when making reservations ensure you ask for a table so you don t get seated at the bar. In the meantime, the food was fantastic!
Great place and great atmosphere.
This was one of my favourite restaurant I went to during my 4 day stay In St Johns. I even went twice!!!
We had a wonderful dinner there last night. The service was excellent and the food was delicious! We would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone wanting to try really interesting flavors and beautiful presentations.
Service is overwhelmed with the food to match.
Fantastic Food and service at this great Restaurant. The Duck Nachos are incredible.
Great food!
Fabulous food, extremely attentive staff, always a great experience!
What a fantastic steak and drinks. So fresh, so good. Atmosphere is great. Ate at bar in basement. It was so relaxing and just an overall great experience and time. Definitely a place to go as a romantic dinner or with a group of friends.
Small but classic food, tasty. Good happy hour prices.
Duck nachos
Wow just delicious! Duck Nachos are the item, all washed down with local ale and or great wine choices by the glass as well!!! I m going back for sure!!!
Fact: over an hour wait for a $30 pasta. And no, the quality of the pasta definitely did not make up for the wait.
We went for their entry in the #BurgerBattle. The burger was delicious, the fries were incredible and the service was great.
Went in for the Overcast Burger Battle. Excellent service. Ill definitely be back to check out the rest of the menu.
Aweful. We waited almost 2 hours for food and was only served 2 pints in all that time. I had the fish & chips. It was boxed, frozen fish that I doubt very much was cod. It was terrible. The gravy was terribly salty, and Im a salt lover. My friends had some chicken burger that was burned black. The manager was very rude and nasty toward us as well. The table next to us waited over an hour for an appiizer and over 2 hours for their meal. The manager told all of us that 2 hours is considered to be a perfectly acceptable wait time for food. Never will I go back here. The service is aweful, the management is worse and the food is mediocre at best
I can honestly say this is my best meal in Canada so far. Had duck confit nachos for starter. It is definitely worth your time.
Among the very best restaurants in town. Had one of the top 3 meals of my life here. Great for dinner for a special occasion or for drinks and snacks.
Quite possibly my favourite restaurant downtown. Has never disappointed.
Excellent food but service in the basement was quite slow. Might be worth having more than just a bartender down there if you are serving the full menu.
Fabulous up scale food
Great food; great service.
Cause they give me a pay check . Also the foods good.
Terrible. Better off with mc Donalds. No joke.
Great food. The kitchen staff really do well. We had a charcuterie plate and then shared a rack of lamb.
Service not up to par too many specials to speel off no price and no time to decide.after order was placed it took a long time before the food showed up.when the food arrived the scallops potatoes were not cooked and rack of lamb instead medium was rear and could cut it with the knife.my wife fish was raw .the coffee was good
I thought the place and staff were awesome!
Delicious food. The only thing is wait time........but food makes up for all that delay. All that negative emotions go away after the food
Great food, wine and atmosphere
Wait time ruined it. 2.5 hrs for mains
Everything about the experience was amazing!! Great place for dinner or for any event!
Duck Confit Nachos!
Excellent food staff and location. I will visit this place again.
Food was good. Very small. Not recommended for bigger groups. We had to wait over an hour for the food to arrive.
TRULY AMAZING FOOD & SERVICE! I have been coming here for years and I am always pleased, most of the times extremely pleased. I dine out frequently in St. Johns and Magnum & Steins continues to hold at the top of the list of numerous amazing restaurants for culinary experience, service and consistency.
We always love this place, but last night they went above and beyond. I hosted a corporate event for almost two dozen people in their downstairs lounge. With full bar service and BOTH menus available, the bar staff, the servers, and the kitchen did an AMAZING job. The atmosphere was great, the food and drink tremendous, and the service was flawless. The folks at M&S took such great care of our guests, and we couldnt have picked a better venue. Thanks for making our night so enjoyable!
Love this place.
I treated the family to this place for Christmas and everyone was greatly pleased with the food. It was also the best salmon Ive ever had (seeing that I have 5 years working in the food industry), that means something. 5 Stars!! This is my new number one place to eat or drink when Im Downtown.
awesome experience great food
Its ok. Less than friendly bartender. Efficient nothing else. Had chicken and waffles which sounded neat, the battered chicken was more grissle than chicken and the sauces with the dish did not compliment it at all. Actually left and went to the duke of duckworth.
