320 Water St, St. John's, NL A1C 1C1, Canada
Located in heart of St. John's, pub style restaurant with casual atmosphere offering local craft and draft beer, great food and atmosphere...
Had a tasty dinner at Saltwater not long ago. Our server was absolutely lovely and the atmosphere was nice- but despite being only one of two tables in the restaurant the food took a really long time- we waited almost a half hour for our main course.
A beautiful interior design that's intricate but not overwhelming. Great atmosphere for a supper out. Normal pricing for style of the restaurant. Fish and chips are a classic go-to to test a restaurants cooking ability and Freshwater delivered a 10/10 dish.
Unfortunately, service was extremely slow. Not our waitresses fault at all. Arrived at 8pm didn’t receive our drinks till roughly 930 with one drink missing and another drink made incorrectly . By 10;05 pm our food had arrived . Meal #1 Salmon with greens and some potatoes Meal #2 mussels shrimp and pasta with what was supposed to be a cream sauce Meal #3 risotto with mussels and shrimp Meal #4 beef striploin with potatoes Meal #1 loaded with olive oil and one clear elastic my friend nearly choked on. Meal #2/3/4 loaded and when I says loaded I mean ruined the food I would never recommend this place nor will I ever eat here again. The food has completely ruined my mood and has upset my stomach with an unhealthy amount of olive oil. They took off 2 of the 4 meals but a good manager/owner should have scratched the entire bill. OILIVE OIL DOESNT BELONG ON A STEAK PERIOD
We enjoyed our dinner here and the vibe here was just right. A night with summer breeze, a cocktail with lobster risotto. I love it anyway.
My lobster pasta dish was delicious. One of the best meals I had in Newfoundland. Unfortunately my husband's fish and chips wasn't. The cod was thickly battered and the fish wasn't cooked through. My espresso martini was fantastic.
A mediocre pub style restaurant. The mussels were tasty and fresh paired with a marinara-like sauce ($20). The grilled cod was also pretty good, a little dry ($38). I’m quite disappointed in the lobster dinner though ($58.00) it was served to me cold (unless this is normal? I’m a tourist, so forgive me if I’m wrong) with no utensils to help further crack the shells as it was pre-cut in half. I could tell service was strained as they needed more staff to help ensure the proper flow and standard of the guests, but my server wasn’t able to check in on my meal until after it was finished (another employee served my dish) and no utensils were provided until after my food arrived & I had to remind them. I can’t really see myself returning to this establishment, it was an okay way of saying hello to a new city.
I recently had the pleasure of dining at Saltwater in downtown St. John’s, and I must say, it was an exceptional experience from start to finish. The ambiance is welcoming and sophisticated, providing the perfect setting for a memorable meal. The food was nothing short of extraordinary. Every dish was beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. From the fresh seafood to the delectable desserts, each bite was a testament to the culinary expertise of the chefs. A special shoutout goes to Brittny and Kelsey, who made our dining experience truly outstanding. Their attentive service, friendly demeanor, and genuine passion for what they do made all the difference. They went above and beyond to ensure we had everything we needed and made us feel incredibly valued as guests. If you’re looking for a top-notch dining experience in St. John’s, I highly recommend Saltwater. And if you’re lucky enough to be served by Brittny and Kelsey, you’re in for a real treat!
I was hesitant after reading some of the reviews but went for it. And I cannot be more thrilled that I did! Our server, Russell, was the ABSOLUTE best. Fun and attentive and just top notch all around. We had the chowder and burger and oysters and lobster roll. After living in Boston and Florida for fifteen years, I can say that this was HANDS DOWN the best lobster roll I have ever had, and I am what some would call a food snob. I would recommend to ANYONE.
I trusted the on line reviews for this restaurant and I am sorry I did. The oysters were too expensive at $4 each. The restaurant was almost empty yet the server only came to our table a few times and did not check in once we finally got our mains. The cod dish was just warm and the risotto was undercooked. It should be eldente not crunchy! The toilet in the washroom was rusted in the bowl and the toilet itself was too close to the door to sit down properly. I glanced into the kitchen and it looked like the was just one cook looking after everything. For the cost, I would have expected much more. I would not recommend this place.
I follow reviewers, and I am sorry for myself! We asked a Cod without bacon, waited so long, that I asked the waitresses why does it take so long, the chief came a few times later, and I told him maybe it took till now 1hour or 1,5 hour and we are not served (he explained us that is was normal as he had to prepare everything for us from beginning) we really appreciated that he came himself to explain and we told him that it is ok we just wait, 2mn later he cameback to argue that we only ordered 45mn and not an hour and half...in so arrogant way... after another 10mn, we got served. The waitresses were so nice, but the chief may need some coaching to learn how to deal with clients in a good manner.
The best place we found in St. Johns. The atmosphere here was upscale and modern. The type of place you could take friends and visit for hours. The food was absolutely the best.
Service was great. Food was mid table. The chowder was not great. The lobster roll was more mayonnaise than lobster but the mussels were good. Its a pub so not much more you can ask for.
I come to St Johns often and have always wanted to visit this restaurant and last week I finally got my chance. This restaurant has lovely interiors and makes you happy to be in St Johns. However, I will say I was disappointed with my overall experience. I ordered the scallops as a starter snd the server told me the number of scallops in the dish would depend on the size. I received 4 scallops and they were so small. They tasted nice but for $24, it was not worth the price. When ordering, I asked the server about the lobster rolls, he said they were delicious. I asked about the price and I was convinced I heard him say the roll was $25.99. 2 lobster rolls came out and they only had a small amount of lobster meat inside and were heavy with sauce. When the bill came I was surprised to see the lobster rolls came to $45.99. I may have misheard the server since he did have an accent. However I can tell you I never would have ordered the lobster roll at the price. And even at that price, it s very dishonest to charge that amount of money for such a small amount of food. (Also it is not listed on any of their menus. Why is that?) Finally, I had to ask for stuff like salt, pepper and ketchup, after waiting several minutes for some to come around. Finally after I had been done my meal for 10 minutes and was waiting patiently for the bill, I gave up hope they would come to my table, so I went to the bar to ask for my bill. Maybe if I wasn t just a table of one, I would have gotten better service. I did tip 15% which was more than generous, given the less than generous portions from the food menu. This restaurant is not indicative of St Johns hospitality.
Decent sized food portions, tasty and creative dishes.
Not bad but also really not great restaurant in downtown St. Johns. Service was prompt, we didnt order anything fancy, my main memory of the place is being a little overpriced, but then again its smack dab in the middle of downtown and clearly caters to tourists. Might not be my first pick if I return, but you could definitely do worse too.
Wow..way different than reviews waiter even said they were different location and different menu..expected at least 3 star..got 2
Tasty, tasty and tasty All fish or seafood dishes are a treat. Nice ambiance, nice service. A no brainer.
Lobster roll costs $40 and contains 10 grams of lobster. This place is a ripoff do not go there!
Fabulous food, excellent service and a wonderful ambiance. Would definitely recommend it. We had several different dishes of a party of 7 and all have it 5 stars!
Wife and I went for an anniversary dinner, first dinner out alone since the birth of our child. Read good reviews online and Im baffled about how. Started with confused servers not knowing who is serving who, not knowing where their oysters are from and just making it up, ended with the staff serving me a completely improvised dish which was not even close to what I ordered. I wont include everything disappointing step after disappointing step as this meal unfolded, as the post would be too long. Ownership really needs to look into their staff from top down. I do not recommend this restaurant at all. Only saving grace was the bruschetta was good but for the prices they are charging, I would expect a much much better experience overall. Wish we could have used our night out elsewhere.
Really tasty meal. Delicious, fresh, and perfectly prepared lobster. Friendly atmosphere with top service and very pleasant with children.
WASTE OF MONEY AND TIME. THEY AUTOMATICALLY PUT 20% TIP WITHOUT ASKING!!!! It was lunch time (1230pm) mid July 2024 when we visited. Place is almost full so there are still 2 or 2 vacant tables. No exageration but our order for 4 pax got in after 50minutes without any advice. Calamari for example, we got in first 15mins before the table behind us. It seems that they gave them our plate of calamari then the staff at the side argue seems they send it to wrong table. After 15mins more our calamari arrived. Request for some ice and napkins -but only the napkins came. I politely followed up ice and they gave a cup half of it was melting. Ask to take away half of the fish and chips bit just handed over without any explanation a box. Lastly!!!! When they give the credit card machine to tap my card, THEY AUTOMATICALLY PUT 20% tip!!!! My boss was in a hurry and I just tap it. But they DO NOT DESERVE THE TIP! they are not even smilling!
Food was good, service was good but a little slow. Parking: Street parking free after 6 and weekends. Paid parking garages. Food : 4/5 |
Delicious
Great all around! The restaurant was able to accomodate a table for 8 on the first day of the George street festival. It was super busy inside and out and the staff were great. They worked so hard servicing the customers even though it was so humid. Shout out to our server Angelina who gave us lots of food recommendations and literally zipped in and out to get her tables serviced. Best food was the oysters, fish and chips, as well as baked cod. The fish was fresh and flavorful. Serving size was just right so all the food was eaten. If we are in St Johns again, we would definitely return.
The board outside the restaurants proclaimed lobster rolls so I sat down alone in a pleasant seat by the window. The lobster rolls werent on the menu but were available. I asked for steamed veges to go with them but they would not do them, just chips or roast potatoes. I was given the bill and had been charged $40 for the two small lobster rolls. Not good value at all and I certainly would not go there again.
NO LOBSTER IN THE ROLL So disappointed. There was a lot of mayonnaise in a hot dog bun instead. Try the restaurant in front - On the sea (it was packed)
We had fish and chips, food was ok, service was friendly and prompt, atmosphere is nice, a bit too busy.
After a mix-up on my part and a last-minute cancelled reservation because of it, Saltwater saved the day by accommodating our large group (of 8) with no notice. We waited at the bar enjoying pre-dinner drinks as the staff freed up a table. The staff were kind, understanding and friendly and all the food was absolutely delicious. The cocktails were on point and they even have NA options for non-drinkers in our group. Definitely get a reservation here! They will not disappoint!
Incredibly mediocre food, would be fine if it didnt cost so much. Service was miserable and slow (although they were friendly) took far too long to get our dishes. Lobster was fishy, stake was bland, fish and chips was fine, lobster rolls were boring at best. Cost FAR too much money.
Best chowder in town. It s chunky and creamy with lots of cod and vegetables. We love it. The seafood pasta is a Must to try :)
Truly an amazing time here... The waitress/hostess/barmaid was phenomenal went today for lunch, she greeted us with a smile seated us immediately and brought over water immediately, she was very attentive and professional she had the whole restaurant under control. What an amazing service from her excellent customer service . Food portions were huge we shared the lobster rolls, enough for 2 to share so delicious and full of flavors the oysters were delicious also, certainly will not be disappointed. Cannot wait to return back. Thank you again for amazing service and delicious food....
Really delicious cod meal, however the lobster appeared to be thawed by running it in tap water and it tasted like chlorine. Good beer choices, but pretty disappointing lobster.
So disappointing to be told youve run out of lobsters for a 830pm reservation on a Friday night. Why advertise a lobster menu when you cant stock up on it especially with the weekend rush?! Only wish we were informed when we entered vs later!!!
Amazing place and amazing food. The waiters are so kind and welcoming. I would recommend this place in a heart beat
I ordered a lobster risotto and the waitress brought me lobster rolls. When I said I ordered the risotto she said no I ordered lobster rolls. I just ended up taking the plate, my father ordered the grilled cod dish you couldn t even eat the potatoes they dumped a pound of salt it was horrible. Was really unimpressed with the service and food.
Great place to spend the evening! Cozy and classy, the staff is great, the food is amazing. We truly enjoyed seafood risotto, lobster and brie bruschetta. Definitely the place to be on Saturday night!
Lobster rolls were great but the service was awful. Were seated and then no one came to take our orders for 20 minutes. Took 30 minutes to get drinks (pop) and then another hour to get our food. Waitress dropped food off but never came back to check on us or bring ketchup/napkins. Dissapointed.
Great food for sure. The service was perhaps a little inattentive and forgetful but I guess that can happen. Amazing Ribs! AMAZING! Cod burger was lovely. Really enjoyed the tartar sauce.
Food was decent, 2 ordered appies and 2 ordered main, wanted everything at once but the appies came 30 minutes before the meals. Waitresses seemed very disorganized. Had lobster and it didnt come with a lobster pick, only awkward scissors that wouldnt cut the shell.
Great food and awesome service
Great food. Lobster Rolls were amazing. Good selection of local craft beers. Friendly service.
The food was tasty, but felt a bit pricey for what we got. The chowder was good as was the pork belly.
My wife and I were visiting St Johns a couple weeks ago and went to Saltwater after reading the reviews. It did not disappoint. The meal was delicious and the server was friendly and helpful. Will return next time we are in the province
Good selection of local brews, cocktail is nice too. It happens to be the lobster this time of the year, the lobster roll is amazing. Two lobster roll is good to share. Food
Great experience at Saltwater! Highly recommend seafood chowder Food
My sister and I visited on our trip to Newfoundland and ordered the lobster rolls. So delicious and the service was awesome. Thanks for making our visit so memorable
Food was VERY good!!! Had the fish and chips and a Cajun pasta special. Server was very knowledgeable and kind. Great drink specials as well! Dessert was DELICIOUS
Had the Pork Belly dish, the chef did a fabulous job. The server was extremely attentive. The food was very reasonably priced and had generous portions. Tried their beefeater blood orange drink was fantastic.y first time dinning inside and I ll be sure to come back!
Was only one steak left at 7:30pm. I ordered it and it was basically thin scrap meat that was completely overcooked ( asked for medium rare) and they charged $40 for it . Will not be back. Will spend my money elsewhere next time .
Maybe it was that time of year, but I was in st Johns on business and wanted to eat some seafood alone at night. found this online. They did not have lobster but suggested other dishes. I was the only one at the restaurant, this the atmosphere being 1star ... The service was curtuous and the food was ok. For the price and the expectations, I cant give it more than a 3star
Had a great meal at Saltwater! The food was delicious, and the restaurant has a cozy atmosphere. One of our favorites and well definitely be back.
Delicious food with quite ample portions! Fantastic accommodations for vegetarian and vegan guest. Highly recommend and will definitely return in future! Wheelchair accessibility: Easy access for individual with a walker
Wow! The most excellent chowder, cod tacos and an overabundance of mussels! All amazingly delicious!
Great service, food was amazing. Good selection of drinks as well, lots of local craft beer available.
Beautiful place, even more beautiful staff. Had the burger. Big.
Okayyyy, this restaurant is . Great atmosphere. Our server recommended the bruschetta and it was absolutely to die for. Ive never had such delicious bruschetta before! I had the seafood chowder, and while it was quite tasty my only criticism is that it didnt have a variety of seafood in it (no mussels or shrimp, just white fish which Im assuming was cod), so it should be called cod chowder instead. The food is on the more expensive end, but I would definitely recommend.
A small menu is normally an indicator that the dishes on it will be of superior quality. While I cannot say anything was bad, the only things that really stood out were the pasta acadiana, the pork belly, the dessert, and the incredible service from Megan (even if she did slightly exaggerate how good the tiramisu was). Might just have been an off night for the kitchen, especially with my steak which was inconsistently seared and not trimmed properly, but we will be back if only for the level of service Megan provides.
Pork belly was amazing
Great!
Staff were extremely helpful, and everyone had a great time!
Best place to eat Serbian food in the heart of Water Street.
Visited twice in April, we loved our different choices. Server Brittany was friendly and competent. Salads bruschetta salmon mussels scallops...all were perfect. And wine choice was varied and well priced. Locally independent delicious!
We got engaged there last night! The food was amazing, our waitress brought out champagne after for us to celebrate. We will of course be back again.
I really dont understand where the 4.4 stars comes from. I have rarely been so disappointed by a meal. We had a baked brie starter, it tasted just like salt and pepper. Main course was lobster with risotto: the lobster was undercooked and the risotto was cold and tasted like cheap chicken broth. The waitress was nice but clearly had no experience recommending wine or coming to suggest reheating the dish. In short, dont go there especially since its quite expensive for poor quality.
I have to say I think Saltwater needs to be rebranded. If you are a local in St.John s youll remember the Saltwater on Duckworth. After the move to Water street Im sure the chef and owners have changed and if not that the brand or audience they are attracting is not the same as when they were on Duckworth. My family and I were celebrating a birthday / early mothers day. We ordered a fair amount of food. Or server was very sweet and helpful when we ran in to food issues. So 4 stars for that only issue it was not 5 is because service includes the Kitchen in my eyes. Drinks: Elderflower fields martini - sweet elderflower does come through. 5/5 Cesar - Classic Cesar, its good! 4/5 I forget the name but its the spicy margarita on the menu - really nice, refreshing, wish there was more of a salt rim. 4/5 Apps: Mussles - plump, but over cooked, not much broth, and underseasoned. Wings - I actually really liked the breaded wings I thought they were 5/5! Pork belly - Kinda funny but maybe a bit too honest. Our server apologized for the wait on this dish, due to the fact that the chef slipped and dropped our original pork belly on the floor. She quickly offered a discount on our meal and it came out maybe 7 mins later. Mains: Seafood risotto - Came with mussles scallops and shrimp I believe. My dad had it and the read was average. Not over done but nothing to make you want to order it again. Cod with Beet salad - My mom raved about this dish she was it was excellent! Steak- unfortunately my brothers steak was over cooked. Again our server noticed without us having to say anything. This was due to her own experience cooking at home, she visually saw the cook was over. Following this she offered to have another one made or give us a discount. My brother opted to keep the one made already due to food waste and time. The garnish and flavours on this dish were very delicious! Salmon with Beet salad- When I got the plate I realized I am particular about salmon and probably should of asked more questions. The salmon was over cooked and the skin was kinda soft which I personally really like salmon skin crispy or with a hard sear. Maybe it was just personal preferance but I really didnt like the cook on it. The fish was just not handled well. Again simular to the steak the cook not on par but the flavours of the sauce and seasoning were great! The Beet Salad on the side was a vanilla dressing with goat cheese. Dessert: Baklava 5/5 so good made with walnuts and you can tell its a home recipe! Overall: I think the place can do really well as a relaxed seafood restaurant. I think the pub food options are awesome for students to get some food before going out! Theres a wonderful atmosphere with the arches and long tables thay give a cozy casual feel. I also would tell anyone that the wings are good. The only downfall is the price for what you get. I wouldnt want to pay for food overcooked or not paid attention too. I think sorting out a clear focus on what kind of restaurant this is now will help. An updated about us online will bring in more people in the upcoming summer Season for tourists. Now a days online presence is so important. Im excited to go back with a few friends and try more of the pub food when I get around to it!
Best Seafood fettuccini I have ever had!!! Everything was excellent here!
Good lobster roll
Ordinary food at extraordinary price. The post disappointing if all is the lobster which is small and meatless for a high price. While the cod fish was good I do not know what the hype of this restaurant is about. Noted this is the most disappointment meal of our 5 day trip in NL. The biggest factor that drove this mediocre rating is that they cannot even do the fries right. It is greasy and soggy soaked in oil. Very disappointing
Lobster Fest Lobster Risotto. The cook must be from Alberta. Thats the only explaination for ruining lobster in St Johns. I could have ordered overcooked calamari and had the same experience and saved $20 dollars. Looking at nearby restaurants after having the appy sized entree at Saltwater. Skip it.
Excellent service! The food was delicious
I saw that this restaurant has lobster and oysters, so I came over to try it. The lobster tastes okay, but a little small, and the oysters taste average, so I don t recommend it. Its not easy to park when you come to this restaurant to eat. I walked around three times before I found a parking space a few hundred meters away from the restaurant. Street parking should be CAD$2 per hour, free after 6:00pm.
Beautiful food and excellent service on an impromptu night out with no reservations. We just ate at the bar but the food and service was excellent.
Never again! Very disappointing the food, the service and the drinks. Just an all bad experience.
Went here with my partner during peak time on a Sunday. Was told what table is ours and we were expecting to be brought to our table except the waiter just pointed and walked away. We waited 7 minutes at the table and no one came to see us. No water, no menus, nothing. At this point we decided to leave. While leaving, the waiter looked right at us and said nothing. I wish we could have been served in a timely fashion. It appeared generally disorganized with no clear guidance. Ive heard good things about the food, however, service is half the battle with restaurants.
Amazing food and service
Our experience was absolutely amazing!! Service was exceptional, they were so friendly and the food was beyond incredible. 10/10 I would recommend this place to anyone and everyone. Kid-friendliness: They were very accommodating with the 3 year old with us, going above and beyond for her to make her feel included.
Overall a lovely meal with great cocktails. Got too late a Reso for the lobster (could have asked them to put one aside though so on me) staff was friendly and recommended other options. The steak was delicious and cooked well. Fish and Chips were the best of the trip so far per my dining companion
Parking: Parking is more difficult while the pedestrian walkway is open Food
We had a great experience! Food was great, and we thought very reasonably priced. Atmosphere and service also top notch! Will def be back. Nice cocktail menu, too - original and well priced.
Excellent lunch on the patio. The salad dressing was absolutely amazing; warm drizzle and soooo tasty. Had the scallops. Yummy .
The restaurant was uncomfortably hot. The risotto was good but the portions are small.
Great ambience. Service rocked. Fish n Chips was a wonderful value for the price. Lobster roll was great tasting but rolls were barely filled. Not good value for your buck
I had the striploin and it was cooked perfect. First time there but definitely will go there again. And went there tonight 4 months later and they dont got a clue how to cook. Sad times
The fry oil seem to us as it hasn t been changed in a while but the lobster roll, shrimp risotto and full lobster were delicious
Roasted cod Really tasty ,it was different and amazing
The salmon dish was amazing. But service was slow and there were shells in the lobster roll.
Had the burger for lunch. Pricey but worth it. Best burger I ve had dining out. Definitely recommend and place wasn t jam packed which was also a plus.
Thank you so much ! To Kavin, who was our server today at lunch time, at The Saltwater Restaurant, in St.Johns, gets a full five stars from my wife and myself. The Chef, who prepared one of the best hamber and fries I have ever eaten in my life, and I mean that, recieves five stars as well. The service was very timely, friendly and knowlegable which, in my opinion, is very refreshing, compared to the kind of service and quality of food you are usually granted in other establishments these days, no matter how much they boast, Im sorry, not sorry to say. Do you like great food and great service and being treated like you matter? Then resurve yourself a table at the Saltwater today, you wont be disappointed.
Had the lobster cooked perfect and very fresh
Title: A Seafood Delight with a Bumpy Start I recently dined at a seafood restaurant that left me with a mix of emotions, but ultimately won me over with its delectable offerings. Upon arrival, I couldnt help but notice the slow service that initially dampened our spirits. However, the server quickly diffused the situation with a sincere apology, explaining the shortage of staff. This thoughtful gesture set the tone for a dining experience that would leave a lasting impression. As a connoisseur of Caesar drinks, I was pleasantly surprised to find the best rendition Ive ever encountered. The blend of flavors was nothing short of extraordinary, making it an instant favorite. Despite the initial hiccup, the affordable price of the drink further added to the restaurants appeal. The culinary journey continued on a high note with the seafood chowder a rich, creamy concoction bursting with the flavors of the ocean. Every spoonful was a testament to the chefs skill, and the impeccable balance of ingredients made it a standout dish. The lobster rolls that followed were equally impressive, showcasing succulent pieces of lobster ensconced in perfectly toasted buns. Regrettably, I must extend my apologies for not providing photos of the dishes I enjoyed. The undeniable hunger brought on by the tantalizing aromas made it impossible to resist diving into the delectable creations before capturing them on camera. Despite the initial service setback and my hasty dive into the delightful dishes, the restaurants commitment to delivering exceptional seafood experiences was undeniable. The top-notch quality of every dish, combined with reasonable prices, makes this establishment a hidden gem worth discovering. With the servers genuine apology and the unforgettable flavors that followed, I left the restaurant with a sense of satisfaction and a newfound appreciation for the culinary mastery on display. Vegetarian options: Had a vegetarian friend and they were very accommodating at changing menu items. Wheelchair accessibility: Small bump before you enter but you can muscle a wheelchair over.
Lobster rolls were fantastic
If you are seeking a nice meal during your visit on water st. Pls do not come here.. we were out of luck and had no other options as all other reservations were booked this Wednesday in august.. I am so horribly embarrassed for this fall back decision as all my guests were so sadly disappointed on here for our one night visit. The bottle of wine we ordered was scunky.. everyone politely pushed aside. The entrees were unimpressive and I don t think anyone finished and certainly didn t enjoy.. a very sad representation of St. John s..
We happened to find this restaurant by chance. And we wanted to try it because of the lobster roles (weve had them in PEI and it was great) and it did not disappoint. Two lobster roles with a side was $40 with tax so it is a nicer diner/ fine dont. Totally worth it. The street was converted into a pedestrian walkway so it was a little quieter, had soft outdoor lights, etc. Our waiter was an international student from Russia and was very knowledgeable, polite and personable. Worth a visit !
A+.
Lovely restaurant with bubbly staff. The food was delicious. Cod for sister and maple glazed salmon for me. To die for :-p
My partner and I were here on Saturday for lunch. My partners allergy was communicated to the restaurant kitchen (peppers) and half the meal was accommodated (muscles), then he was served salt and pepper fries (according to the menu) with Cajun seasoning on them. I had the roasted cod, the potatoes were reheated from the day before and were still cool in the middle. At 35 dollars a plate, reheated potatoes are not acceptable. Overall this was a very disappointing food experience. The atmosphere was fine and our waiter tried his best.
The lobster rolls are different and very tasteful! If you never tasted it, you definitely should. The ambiance and the staff are great as well.
Not often I leave a bad review but after 3 weeks in the Maritimes this was the worst dining experience I had. Food was ok at best but not even close to the price that was charged. I ve had way better meals at a food truck! Service was good but the quality of the food was terrible.
Ordered nachos for lunch, super yummy
While the food was delicious, the restaurant was too dark to enjoy a nice afternoon meal and I found the food to be too expensive for what we received. We tried the lobster rolls, the fish and chips and the grilled salmon - the salmon was the best of the three. Because of this I can only give 4 stars for the experience.
My wife and recently had an early Sunday night dinner at at this restaurant during a vacation holiday in Newfoundland. Service was good; food was mediocre. The dishes received varied from the menu description. Perhaps it was because of time of day and being on a Sunday evening but I would consider another location to enjoy.
Great food and service.
Service was great. Food was delicious. Defiantly recommend!
Great food, friendly service!
The best seafood restaurant in Water street ,We had Seafood Pasta, Shrimp Risotto, 2 sets of Lobster Rolls. Everything delicious Must try Lobster Rolls 10/10 . Love it HIGHLY RECOMMENDED Special Mention- Micheal
It is over priced.
Had the fish and chips - really good Margarita also very good. Great service Food : 4/5
Their seafood pasta was so yummy! Saucy, major garlic, and the shrimp, scallops and mussels cooked to perfection. Id recommend stopping by for lunch or dinner
The most unbelievable fish and I have ever eaten! Light breading and flaky fresh cod! Best ever and I will be spoiled.
The restaurant is roomy and is conveniently located in downtown. I had the lobster rolls and enjoyed them but they were too buttery. Fish and chips were good but not the best. I visited out of season (Oct 2023) so that could be why.
I don t understand the 4.4. Service was good. However, I ordered the cod, the 35$ signature dish. The toppings was ok but the cod was partially undercooked (jellyish), and the whole plate wasn t hot enough. Disappointing.
Food at the fish exchange is cheaper than here. The portions are ridiculously overpriced for what you get. 4 scallops for 25$? That s insane. It is never busy there by the seems of it and the place looks super old and run down.
Scallops were incredible.
Angelina was our server (group of 9) and was superb!! The food was fantastic. It was a touch loud for our older guests - but otherwise this is the place to go for fine dining with a group in St.John s, NL
We had a lovely supper at Saltwater. Yhebservuce was excellent & the food was absolutely delishous. Go hungry because their servings are very generous!
Excellent seafood items!!!
Excellent seafood risotto. The best.
Great food :)
The service was friendly and the food was good. My chicken was not completely cooked but the rest of the food was delicious.
I was in St. John s for a business trip. I found Saltwater by mistake. I got scallops for appetizer: delicious. Main was roasted cod, Mediterranean style: amazing. Dessert a tiramisu, which I don t have any word to explain how it was: I can just say that it was one of the best tiramisù I ve ever had. Many, rather a lot places in Italy don t make tiramisù as good as Saltwater.
It impresses me that St. Johns continues to be a great place to find any dining experience. One of them is Saltwater! This restaurant has been around for many years now and continues to deliver on quality food and good atmosphere. The new location on Water Street is great:) A solid choice for appetizers are the fresh mussels and chowder and for main dish, my favourite from over the years is the strip loin always cooked to perfection! Don t forget the many options for fish and seafood.
Very good burger. But 45 minutes before being served when there are only 3 tables to serve... Too long.
Food was good, taps werent pouring correctly, prices were high.
Delicious food, good wines and very good service. We had a wonderful evening
Saltwater, this place is one of the perfect place to dine in. I have heard they have started to serve lunch too. This place is perfect for family, friend gathering or have a date with your soulmate. They have inside pub if you are lone guy and can enjoy your own company with a glass of whiskey. This is the only place which serve lobster whole spring. So break in and dig in to have a beautiful Knight with your loved ones.
Worst experience tonight. Not exaggerated: it was 2 hours for our dinner to arrive. Drinks were forgotten. A meal was missed! And only 5 tables were sat with less than 20 people in the place. Food tasted amazing but everything else was not good. Dessert was the $60 parking ticket because we were well over an hour past when we expected to leave!!! Hopefully whatever happened to us does not continue for you!
Great service. Lovely meal. Very nice time.
Amazing. So tasty.
High expectations not met here. we waited 90 min for food. Place did not seem busy. Finally server acknowledge the wait and offered a free drink. Then charged me an extra one instead. my group seemed mildly annoyed but not enough to leave. Kind of sucked. 50 lobster with fries no garden vegetables. Seemed like a an off night for all the otherwise great reviews. nice ambiance though.
Delicious. Fair prices and a menu where every single person in our group of 8 immediately saw something that jumped out at them. Half lobster over risotto? Yum.
The food here was excellent! We ate here last night and sat on the patio which had a lovely vibe. The food itself was very good - my wife had seafood risotto. I make risotto at home and have had it many times including in Italy - I thought this risotto was really excellent by comparison. I had chili and parmesan cream fetuccini with a half lobster and it was also amazing. The texture of the pasta was great, the sauce very flavorful and of course the NL lobster was delicious. My parents had the crusted cod - cant go wrong with NL cod. Overall, the food here was really top notch and I really enjoyed my drink. The only downside right now is that with a VERY busy post-lockdown come home year every location in town is completely slammed. The restaurant was packed and so service was a bit on the slower side - luckily the evening was beautiful so it wasnt much trouble.
Lobster was on the menu. Baked Brie appetizer was excellent. As it was two couples celebrating anniversary we we were treated to a special dessert that was fabulous. Only minor issue is that there service was a bit slow, but they have a small kitchen for preparation. Be patient, the wait is worth it.
Had a really great lunch in their outside seating area! Delicious mussels and pork belly.
Food and service were exceptional. Dietary restrictions: Accommodating
Great food and great service, will go back again!!!
My wife and I enjoyed our dinner at Saltwater. The seafood risotto was excellent! My wife enjoyed the cod dish she ordered. The service was also excellent and all servers were hustling to provide prompt service.
Food and service was great! I wanted lobster for lunch. It was not on the lunch menu. They went out of their way and made it for me anyways.
Food was excellent. Service was slow but the food did make up for the very slow service as there was only 3 tables in the restaurant
Definitely not the experience we were expecting. It has been awhile since we were at Saltwater - we were last there in 2013 at the old location and it was excellent. It was a very different experience this time. Service was extremely slow, especially given that there were only a few other tables that were occupied. Just over an hour before we got the one appetizer that we shared between 2 of us. Our mains left a lot to be desired. The cod was very undercooked and the salmon was just fine . This was after witnessing multiple dishes going to wrong tables over and over, and then when ours finally arrived the server announced our gluten free salmon dish (we are not gluten free). The whole evening felt very chaotic and disorganized even though it did not seem busy at all. Our server was very kind and apologetic, she did it take the cod off of our bill. Overall, it was very disappointing and hopefully just a very off night for the staff/restaurant.
Food was delicious and the service was awesome! We actually had a reservation at a different restaurant that tried to sit us at a terrible table so we decided to give this place a try - no regrets! It was a fantastic meal for our date night!!!
We had a evening meal here last night. It was a beautiful evening so we ate on their terrace. We had a very thoughtful waitress Angelina. I only wish the food was as good as the waitress. They were quite busy & perhaps this is the reason why our food was so mediocre. We had the scallops as an entree although they tasted good there were only 4. For the price I would have expected a couple more. I had the pan fried cod which was under cooked & barely warm. My wife had the seafood risotto. It was mediocre ( dry salmon, little taste to the risotto). The desert (a tiramisu) was the best part of the meal. Most reviews give this place a good rating so was surprised with our food.
Food was pretty good. Little hot inside but overall good experience, and friendly staff.
100 minute wait time. Never again. While i do understand noon hour on a nice day will stress the kitchen but at the very least let your patrons know in advance. We were there on the occasion of my mother in laws birthday. She has dietary restrictions and need to eat on time. This is unacceptable. I m turned off and I never ate yet. If you don t mind sacrificing your entire afternoon for a burger and fries then try somewhere else. Extremely disappointed.
Felt sorry for our waitress. She served us clams that had a barnyard smell to them and taste off. We objected and she took them away and told us other tables had the same issue. Ruined what should have been a good dining experience.
Good food and service. Menu nothing like what is online.
We had a wonderful experience. Russell was our server and let me say he is truly an asset to your establishment. So attentive and helpful. He went above and beyond and so knowledgeable regarding the menu as well. It was a pleasure to have him as our server. The BEST service I ever received in a restaurant. Oh and the food was great too! :) Bravo Saltwater, we will be back.
Very disappointed despite some good reviews. The food was bland and therefore not very tasty. The bill was overpriced considering we did not have any alcohol. I doubt wed go back.
Great fresh food, big portions, friendly service.
Great food, good service. Cant complain.
Great seafood and even had a dessert menu...ask for Russel
Stopped in for a quick cocktail, Old Fashioned, and ended up having two and lobster rolls. Very pleased with the drinks, food and service.
Lobster roll and a martini for lunch, what more can you ask for? Great food, nice ambiance.
Good food. The burger was good and fish&chips was delicious.
Great friendly service, good drinks. Had the lobster roll special, all fresh but not quite the same as in New England, onions which shouldn t be on a lobster roll were too over powering for the lobster both in flavor and in size
Me and my family ate at Saltwater for our stay in St. John s. Our server, Angelina, was super accommodating and very sweet! We wanted a table outside, so we looked over the menu and had drinks inside while we waited. We were promptly offered a table outside when it became available. Our food was absolutely incredible. My salmon was cooked to perfection- the skin was crispy and the flavour was amazing. Even the vegetables tasted great and were prepared with care. My mother and father had the steak and lamb, which they both also spoke very highly of. Would definitely recommend to anyone in St. john s looking for a good place to eat that isn t a pub/kid friendly lol :)
Had a horrible lunch at Saltwater today. It really doesnt deserve one star but I had to choose it in order to post this review. We are visiting here and had our hearts set on a lobster roll sandwich so we went to Saltwater. The best word I can use to describe our server was surly. She was unfriendly and seemed annoyed by our presence. We ordered our much-anticipated lobster roll which came with a small side of fries for $26.99. We waited much too long (about 40 minutes) for our order, only to be greatly disappointed when it finally arrived. The amount of lobster in each was miniscule. Each bun contained exactly 4 small pieces of lobster, approximately 1 square inch a piece. When we inquired if this was the normal portion the server said she would check with the kitchen. Five to ten minutes later she reappeared with a small dish of extra lobster which was a bit of an improvement, but from my enjoyment of other lobster rolls in Boston and Prince Edward Island, hardly made up for what a lobster roll should be. When I paid by debit card, the server hovered uncomfortably over me while I made my payment and watched carefully when the option to enter a tip came up. I asked her to come back when I was finished but she stated she needed to wait for the debit machine and continued to stand there watching. A very poor ending to a very poor lunch.
Cold food, slow service, dirty washrooms.
I ate here in August and based on reviews picked the restaurant for my wifes birthday. The server said she did not like seafood and could not recommend anything. The air was musty (we were next to an open door). The risotto was not properly cooked. The overall experience was very underwhelming for what I had expected to be a 4+ star rated restaurant. I even complained to the server who just shugged their shoulders and said oh well sorry you did not like the meal.
I joined a colleague for dinner here recently since Olivers was temporarily closed. Service was slow, but friendly. Not a sophisticated spot (I was given white vinegar for my chips in a plastic pouch), but cozy. The lobster rolls I ordered were a tragedy: absolutely packed with chopped, raw red onion (which, lets be clear, absolutely overwhelmed the texture and flavour of the lobster) and drizzled completely unnecessarily with balsamic glaze. Accompanied by a small ramekin of lacklustre fries, it was one of the most disappointing restaurant meals I have had this year. Perhaps their other offering are better, but I wouldnt make a point of returning.
Ate here the other night, the food was phenomenal. They do staple foods but in a high end way. I had the Chicken Amaretto, the chicken was tender, the sauce was delicious, overall a fantastic meal. The server was also very friendly, helpful and nice! Will be back again! Update: went back again with larger group, the food was amazing. Scallops were absolutely perfect, good drinks, tacos were fantastic, pasta was amazing and the tiramisu was probably one of the best desserts I have ever had. Service was amazing, bartender was very accommodating to requests. New top favorite restaurants in St. Johns!
We had the lobster rolls. Were good. Buns were delicious and heated properly. Basalmic glaze was added to the plate for aesthetics but it made the lobster rolls hard to eat - kept getting vinegar on our hands!
Many of the entrees were sold out but the service was good.
The seafood risotto was good, the service friendly. Simple but effective chocolate dessert. A fairly limited choice of draft beer on the other hand, surprising!
Nice place good food and service
Came here for lunch. Had a fantastic meal- including a delicious lobster roll! The food was fresh, delicious, and the view was also quite nice onto one of the main streets of St. Johns. Staff were very friendly as well.
Warm welcome. Relaxed atmosphere. Good wine, good food. Welcoming and attentive staff. Favorite for Angelina!
Order the pasta, but avoid the lobster. Apparently lobsters are as popular in St John s as they are in Vancouver I just wish I knew that before I ordered the lobster pasta. The pasta itself was ridiculously delicious, and I have to say that I enjoyed it much more than the lobster.
The best tartar sauce Ive ever had.
Good place and good stuff. Food was high quality
Good place to hang around with friends and family
This is the place for lobster boiled to perfection. Splitting the thorax is not esthetically what we prefer so if you wish a different presentation, please specify when you order.
Fantastic place! They made delicious food that took into account my many many food allergies. Highly recommend. Dietary restrictions: The chef worked around my many allergies.
Delicious Seafood. Wanted a nice upscale dinner on our last night in St. Johns and Saltwater met the criteria due to my wifes love of risotto. Also had a scallop appy and local salmon, all awesome.
If in St.Johns, just go. Food service and atmosphere all excellent...shout out to Megan our server too. You wont be disapointed.
We had lobster roll, bruschetta and drinks after some sightseeing downtown on our first day in St. Johns. It was a lovely place and not busy at that time of day, we received great service. Our meals were delicious, Thank you!
It was such an awesome surprise. The food is phenomenal I had spicy chicken tacos and, unlike most places, it tasted fresh and not greasy. Angelina was super sweet and a great help! She is awesome. I definitely recommend! Dietary restrictions: Celiac (gluten free)
Great local foods
Burgers were great but nachos were a huge disappointment, sent them back to kitchen.
The host and the server were amazing! Food was good too! The salmon dish is perfect: crispy outside and tender inside. I love it and I will return to this place if I visit St John s again
Relaxing nice staff good food and service
Toby the manager is extremely helpful and friendly. I took a small group and he paid attention to all my requests, and provided excellent service for all of us. His staff was very accommodating and provided cheerful and quick service. The food was rated excellent by the entire group. Highly recommend the Saltwater restaurant.
Salad and burger were good, not outstanding but the pork belly was the best Ive ever had. Absolutely melted in my mouth. The shrimp appetizer was really good as well. Our waiter was very attentive and professional. Have eaten at Salt water a few times before, but if this was our first time, I dont think I would rush back. The ambiance is definitely one of the nicest in the city so thats a plus.
Great ambiance and food but unfortunately the service was not great. Waited an hour to order.
Had dinner there with my wife tonight. Was a little put off by the $20-$40 entree prices, vs. the paper napkins, stamped steel utensils, cafeteria-type dishes, no tablecloths etc. (but maybe this is a covid effect?) But put that all aside - the food was FANTASTIC. Seared scallop starter was outstanding (some of the best scallops Ive ever had.) My pan-fried cod was beautifully prepared, with pork scrunchions, delicious mashed potatoes & home-made tartar sauce. My wifes duck entree was amazing too. They resisted over-kill on the cinnamon chutney, and rounded it out nicely with the chimichurri. Dessert was a chocolate torte - more of a ganache in a glass, but nice deep chocolate flavor. Really, extremely pleased with the food. And the ambience & service were very good too. So, 5 well-deserved stars, despite a pretty weak table setting. :-)
I had the poutine and some beer. Great service and awesome environment. I will go again when I am in town!
Not great food.
Hands down the Best dinner we ate while We were in St.John s, and the best pasta I have ever tasted!
Perfect food
Got the burger, quite tasty. Prices a little high but atmosphere, service and quality are worth it
Delightful spot. Food was well prepared. Delicious!
Great local food and amazing service, but on the pricy side
Been here three or four times now, never disappoints. Good for a proper meal, or a few beer and nachos with friends
Food is amazing and great staff!
