300 Water St, St. John's, NL A1C 1B8, Canada
Warm Irish-style tavern supplying draft beers, traditional Newfoundland seafood & classic pub grub.
absolutely horrendous service (super long wait time when it gets busy), mediocre food (the mozzarella sticks were very salty and the salad was fresh but the dressings were a bit too much..). cute atmosphere though. overall, will never come here if it was not midnight on a sunday when all other kitchens were closed.
Wonderful meal again, this is our go to place for dinner out. Waitress was attentive and sweet. Food well way too big of servings, after a starter and a salad we could barely touch our meal. I ordered the lamb shepherds pie and husband had the fish and chips for like the 4th time lol. All tasty, reasonable price for the servings size we have enough leftovers for the weekend.
It was ok, had a couple beers, Cod Tongues, Calamari & split a fish and chips. I wouldn’t advise on the Calamari, it’s more breaded jalapeños, black olives, pineapple and grape tomatoes than it is Calamari. Fish and chips were good including the fries. First time for Cod Tongues, bit chewie though. Draft beer selection was ok, bunch of local beers. Unfortunately our server was rather slow and I had to flag her down for another pint. Don’t think I’d return… and a quick note, having the patio set up in October doesn’t make much sense and is an eyesore for the street scape.
Visiting from Ontario and stopped in here for lunch. I ordered the fish tacos which were delicious. We ordered calamari for the table and they were so good. Loved how the restaurant looked and was happy with our food and service.
The atmosphere and location of this place is top notch. There’s plenty of knick knacks in cases related to the history and culture of Newfoundland. Anthony Bourdain wrote about this place during his trip in 2018. Ordered the hot turkey sandwich and a couple of beers. Husband ordered a burger. Both were large portions that we had to make it two meals. Food did take quite awhile to arrive at the table which was my only complaint. Server didn’t check on us often after we were sat. They are open 24/7 but late night service seems questionable (see other reviews).
Nice place to visit. Food was good. We had the fish and Chips and the fish cakes (cod, crab, & potato). The cakes were a little different because of the potato in them, but good. The cod was very good. Service was a little slow and the restaurant was not very busy, so really not sure why. Over all, it was worth going by. Afterwards you can walk and explore Water Street. Parking was easy to find at this time of day. In the evening, parking has been very hard to find. Very busy area in the evening.
The food took over 35 minutes to arrive, and when it did, the server had forgotten about my food allergy, causing a further delay. Our food was cold. The leafy greens in the garden salad were wilted and there were more croutons and cranberries than anything else. The seafood chowder was more of a béchamel sauce than a chowder. Our server disappeared several times for long periods. The table next to us were very loud talking in detail about sex, definitely not a family restaurant. Other than that, the moose burgers were decent.
We stumbled across this restaurant and are so glad we did! The food was perfection (we had the Guinness Burger and the Roast Beef Dip). The ambiance in here is excellent. Like stepping back in time, but with a modern flair. So much to look at! Will definitely return.
Great food and service open 24/7
Terrible food and service! I ordered two butter chicken poutines. Usually they make them really well, but sadly it was made absolutely terribly when I ordered on that day. The portion size was next to nothing, no trace of gravy or chicken either. The worst part is that I left a message to speak with the manager three separate times, and he didn t even have slightest courtesy to call me back and ask what the matter was. Absolutely terrible service and food. The same day I also mice in their restaurant. This would be the last time I will be dining there, seeing what I saw
Not open 24/7 needs to be updated
Beer great. Some dishes not available because they were not delivered. Service very nice
Atmosphere awe inspiring, staff so very friendly, welcoming and eager to please the food amazing yummy!
We went here for dinner a couple of weeks ago, and we liked it soo much that we went back for breakfast the next morning! I did not like the cod tongues but I think they may be an acquired taste. I would definitely go back and would recommend to friends.
Great atmosphere, delicious food and lovely service. Will be coming back!
We visited last night. It was busy, as it was a weekend evening and it was supper hour. We were seated quickly by the window. Unfortunately, there were many fruit flies around our table. This became an annoyance and kind of turned me off. We were quickly asked our drink orders and our server was nice. We waited a long time for drinks to arrive. ( 20 mins). I ordered a pasta dish which arrived very cold and the baugette was off tasting and not fresh at all. The cheese on top was also very cold and not melted. The baguette tasted sour. My husband had the surf and turf and he enjoyed the scallops and shrimp but it was all covered in a cream sauce and the steak did not seem grilled much - rather broiled or boiled in the sauce or something- unsual looking. He did eat it but not the best. My wine ( at $11) tasted old. I was not at all impressed by this visit. Probably will not return due to flies, poor wine and not great food. The price was $130. Definitely too steep for the quality. Too bad, as otherwise the atmosphere was ok and our server did her best.
Visited as a tourist. Really liked the atmosphere and loved the service and food. First server was a lovely young woman whose name escapes me (was there Oct. 9/2024, arriving around 1400). She was so pleasant, attentive, and informative. Unfortunately, it was toward the end of her shift however, Carm took over. Both were simply lovely and attentive. As well, the food was exceptional. I bought the seafood pappardelle with pesto to go and my gosh was it good. Despite taking it to go, it was excellent even after the 15 + minute walk back to the hotel. It was generously topped with assorted seafood ranging from scallops, muscles, to tender large shrimps. There was also a side of a cheese covered baguette. In short, I highly recommend this place. Please don t pass it by. You won t regret it.
One of the best late night foods. Great atmosphere and food
Best nachos ever! Gotta try the nachos with brisket!
Was late, and they took a long time to bring the food.
We had a great meal in downtown St. Johns on Water Street. Friendly and funny hostess and wonderful atmosphere.
My girlfriend and I went here for the last weekend before the pedestrian mall closed, as it was recommended and highly praised by multiple people. Server was nice in our short time there. We got placed by the window seat and were surrounded by a swarm of flies the whole time. We had the Artichoke dip and it was bad. Pita bread was stale, so were the chips, and the dip didn t taste like anything except for cheese, and was basically mush. The drinks weren t good either. I don t think the beer was their fault but the in house drink was lacklustre at best. $60 for 2 mid drinks and a mushy appetizer was not what I d had in mind for a date night. We were still hungry when we left. All in all would never return. We didn t even stay for our mains, which is the first time ever and we visit many restaurants all over town. Would not recommend going here and wouldn t return, but glad everybody else we know has had a good experience.
We ordered our food at 2:30pm and did not get our food until 3:52pm. The food was good, the waitress was great, but insane wait. We were a party of 5... Vegetarian options: Lots of delicious salad options, fries and onion rings are great too
Great place to grab food, open 24 hours so great if you fly in late. Some authentic Newfoundland dishes and friendly staff.
Had the muscles, crab cakes and scallops - all delicious and reasonably priced. Great live music upstairs as well. Would recommend checking out!
The staff was friendly. The service was slow but then realized that Bridie Molloy, the bar upstairs, is part of this restaurant so the kitchen is actually working for two establishments which could explain the slower service. We weren t in a hurry so it was fine with us. The Jiggs Dinner Pie was so good but the portion is very large. My husband got the steak which was a bit overcooked but his sides were good. If you are looking for the live music you need to go upstairs.
The food is not great, what is served doesnt match the description on the menu, the service is so slow and it is dark and not terribly clean. If you dont have 2 hours and a couple hundred dollars you should go elsewhere. Dietary restrictions: They really dont care about dietary restrictions or allergies
Great location BUT both meals were cold and margarita was awful. First time not finished a margarita. Had to find our own silverware. Disappointing
Johnny goes above and beyond for his customers and is natural, easy-going, and brings delightful conversation to the table. Ive had him twice and he was fantastic both times. Excellent at what he does. What a cool guy!!!
The location is smack in the middle of all the action. The patio was packed, but we managed to get a great table. Choice of beers was extensive, and the food was alright but it took forever to get it. The seafood chowder was very good, but the moose burger was not (over cooked and hard). The crab cakes were average and the fish and chips again average. I give this place a good rating because of the patio and friendly service.
I dont usually rate restaurants, however after a week of thinking about it,I still have a bad taste in my mouth. Went for lunch last monday, July 22nd and was very disappointed in everything about my experience. The service was terrible, slow to non existent. After and hour and a half the food showed up cold, and looked like it was just thrown on the plate, fish and chips, if you cant get this right in St Johns go into another line of work.
We had just arrived in St Johns and it was after 9 when we went in search of food. Decided on this place mainly because they are open 24 hours a day and some of the others along this road close early. I had the fish and chips and it was the absolute best fried fish I have ever had. Perfectly seasoned and delicious. My partner had Jigs dinner and loved his also. Service and staff were great. They have a nice patio out front. Everywhere else I ate fish and chips on this trip was a disappointment compared to this meal!
Very disappointed. Special girls day out luncheon and it wasnt fit. We were seated in a booth in a secluded area. Not a soul around, not even staff. Toasted Clubhouse sandwich was soggy and the pan fried cod was mediocre at best. Fries were way too dark, and tasteless, oil needs to be changed. Burgers were pretty good. It wasnt busy but our service was poor. Had to go looking for our waitress. She Didnt take drink orders from half of us, never returned or offered refills. Not checked on. Had to request bill. Not a great experience.
Way Over Priced. Food was not that great. Waiting wayy too long for food after ordering. Went late at night (12:30) for some pub grub. Took us an hour and a half to get our food. Server was busy with a few tables but did not bring ketchup or salt when asked. Will not go back again and do not recommend this place.
Worst Caesar I ve ever had. So watery.
Dont believe the hype. Best restaurant in the city, servers are great, food is great, its literally never closed.
On Water Street. In the heart of it all.
The absolute worst Eggs Benedict. First of all, it took about half hour to arrive in an empty restaurant. (which is okay when the food is actually edible.) The eggs were quail sized and overcooked, covered with next to no sauce. The salmon (saltier than this review) was probably sitting under the warmer and the sauce for a long time because it.was.cooked. The bread was an old kaiser style bread. Just awful. And top it all off, I bit into an egg shell. Tip included, it was 39$ for the benny s and a black coffee.
We ended up visiting here 2x. The first time, we missed breakfast. We had lunch and it was OK. I wanted to try the breaky, so we went back. Again, it was just ok. The service was slow, and she didnt come back to ask how everything was. Had to flag her down to get salt and pepper. The patio and location are great.
My family and I chose Celtic Hearth as we have had several good outings there but last night turned my stomach. There were fruit flies ALL over my beer and my food. My drinks were taken off the bill but, when mentioning the flies our server was like oh yea , horrible isnt? Not the response I was expecting. Im not one for making an unnecessary scene so I fid not engage further. The icing on the cake was when the server asked me if I wanted a takeout box for my uneaten fly covered food. If I was outside on the deck...thats part of it but we were inside. CH dropped the ball here. We spent almost 100 bucks and I had to come home to eat something.
best sangria Ive ever tasted, were also very accommodating when it came to ensuring my meal was gluten free Dietary restrictions: lots of gluten free options
Excellent
Its always a good spot to end off your night out with friends. Food is good portioned, average prices, and good service. The pub has a nice assortment of local photos/decor with different table sizes and styles for different groups. Would recommend for tourists to stop in.
Went for breakfast... Was good pub breakfast. Portions are decent. Everything cooked how I like it. Good central location.
The food here is pretty standard of anything you will find in irish style pub. The decor goes all out and theres a good sized cover patio. It was on the expensive side for no good reason.
The food was very good. there was a long wait due to it being busy but otherwise spectacular
It was what you expect for pub fare. Everything was decent, but wasn t great. Dietary restrictions: Some gluten friendly options. Food : 3/5 |
A good spot downtown for some local and traditional inspired fare. The beers are also pretty good. Wheelchair accessibility: Outdoor patio could be accessible, but indoor is not.
Amazing place. Very grateful its 24hrs. I was able to get the Dirty Beef and nachos at 3 in the morning. Staff are friendly even though theyre working super late (or early). Food was good though. Really enjoyed it. I thought the dirty beef looked a bit much but i quite enjoyed it .
I was really looking forward to a burger today from celtic hearth while enjoying the sun. I stood next to the sign that says please wait to be seated for 15 minutes while 1 server kept walking past me without a word. Finally someone else noticed and came out and asked to seat me. I told her I wanted to sit on the patio as there were plenty of seats left, she refused and told me she could seat me inside or up on George Street. I told her I wanted to sit on the patio on water street. I have no idea why she wouldnt allow me to sit there but clearly she didnt want my money bad enough. Thankfully I found another restaurant that appreciated my business.
Bad food, slow service, and overpriced. Calamari had more fried pineapple and tomatoes than actual squid. Tacos were small and drinks weren t made properly.
I went here at the recommendation of somebody at 3:00 AM and it wasn t very busy. I was seated very promptly, but then nobody ever came back to get my order. So I decided to leave at 3:30 which on my way out I was asked if I would like to order. I ve already waited a half hour guys. Sorry I m not gonna order after waiting a half hour for a simple calamari. In my opinion, get some pizza and go home. Don t waste your time on this place.
Don t go. Slow service, expensive and mediocre food.
Friendly and quiet place. On the second floor its noisier because its the pub with music. We had a seat on the restaurant side. Very intimate. I had the Lamb Shepherd pie and my wife had the Moose Burger. Both dishes were delicious. Courteous and fast service. Good place for a romantic dinner.
The best late night breakfast downtown!
Nice decor for an Irish pub. Upstairs is Bridie Molloys Pub (George Street) that is overflow for the CH restaurant below on Waters St. If you are looking for Old World charm this is it and has local entertainment regularly upstairs. Kid-friendliness: Kids welcome with adult up to 8:30PM. The very friendly sign says so.
A nice pub steps down from the hub bub of George Street. I recommend you check it out.
Food was okay but nothing exciting, but for me I wouldn t go again. We ordered fish and chips, which was pretty good. The moose burger was just okay, a bit dry but it is a lean meat so that was expected. The calamari was good and worth it. The beef dip sandwhich was fairly good, would have loved more gravy. Service was good.
Great place to enjoy lunch and spend time. Outside and with a great weather is the best.
Can t rate the food as we wait 45 mins and decided to leave after they told us our order was yet to be in the queue!
Another fabulous breakfast at the Hearth. Dietary restrictions: They have always accommodated our dietary restrictions. Food : 5/5 |
Servers were super friendly and accommodating despite how busy they were. Awesome service and drinks.
Food was amazing but the service was awful though. Sucks because it ruined the experience.
my husband and I were there around 6 pm today it was the worst wrap I have ever eaten. I dont know how you cant make a wrap. the 1/2 cup of chowder my husband oedered was terrible, he only ate half of it. and the waitress took a long time to come back to our table when we asked for condiments. terrible awful service. I wont waste my money there again and will not recommend your services.
Waited 45mins for barely hot food which was not good at all, on top of being very expensive.
It was a good night, we enjoyed every thing. Good service, good menu, good food. Food
Horrible Place To Be 24/7s with no take out or pick up at night who declines all pick up orders and demands you come to the restaurant in order to place an order and you think after putting this rule in place they would atleast allow door dash and skip the dishes to be turned on this place is a waste and shouldn t even be open 24/7 they don t even allow services to dine out pass 11 wish there was another restaurant in this city this ones SERVICE SUCKS and they deny pick up orders because there lazy
Very nice place. Took very long to get our food. Chowder soup was the best. Fish cakes very disappointing as it was all potatoes, shrimps were good, cod fish was soso.
The food are soooooo good!!!!!!!!!!
Awesome. Had. Dinner. And breakfast... its also open. 24 hrs service was great. Food. Perfect
Food is just so so... Service is very slow and because of short staff. The fish cakes can hardly see any fish in it. The canjun shrimps are very good.
The food is good ! I really love the early 1900s decor My only little deception , theres too many potato in the fish cake , :/ Food
This place is really special to me. Call it when you want but the food and staff are great. I can never get enough mussels and I love the way they do em. Best kind
Lifesavers if you are just back from late night hike - it is for you we had beef poutine and moose burger - and omg thats was crazy good ! Food
We decided to give this restaurant a try after we were intrigued walking by and dined on the outdoor patio. Ordered fish cakes, crab and artichoke dip, steamed mussels, seafood chowder and steak & cheese flatbread, along with strawberry mojito and pina colada mocktails. We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner and savoured every bite. Really impressed on our first night in St. John s.
Calamari 6/10 - there was more fried veggies than there was actual pieces of calamari Shrimp and crab dip 8.5/10 - delicious! great appetizer, the pita chips were kinda stale Mussels in white wine sauce - 8/10 - these were great but very saucy/liquid wish we got some bread for it Caesar salad - 5/10 - tasted wet, drenched in dressing
Had a wonderful meal of fish and chips supreme. Everything was delicious. My companions ordered a hot turkey sandwich which I am told was top notch. What made the difference was that it was served fresh and piping hot. Drinks were quite good too. I had a couple pints of Rickards Red which was cold and delicious. The server was so nice and made sure our experience was worth telling others about. Highly recommend.
Great place to enjoy a meal in the sun! Food is local and tastes great!
Food was okay. The waitress was friendly, quiet and laid-back.
Johnny is the best server at Celtic hearth!! He is so kind, attentive and awesome. If you are so blessed to be served by Johnny be grateful.
Traditional Irish pub with great food and a great vibe!! Cod spring rolls were very tasty! Highly recommend!
Johnny was our server, he was very accommodating to us as walk in customers on a busy Friday evening. We got our drinks quickly, and the food was excellent. Thank you for the meal
I got the weekend special ribeye I know a ribeye when I see it. I know a sirloin when I see it No matter how much gravy you put on a sirloin, it will never be a ribeye. (You dont put gravy on a ribeye anyway.) The head chefs insistence that it was a ribeye without even looking at it spoke volumes. As much as I dont want to think so, I believe it was intentional. At minimum, they had no intention of finding and correcting their problem. IT WAS A SIRLOIN!!!
Great service! The desserts are delicious! The moose burger was really good. The sexy nachos were easy to share and super yummy. One of the best seafood chowders in St. Johns.
Only had the chicken strips. They were big, however for the price I expected more.
The food is absolutely delicious (the chocolate cake ohmygod), and the staff were so kind! During my week vacation I went twice because I loved it here so much!
Your weekend overnight server, cody, is phenomenal. We come there after work but for him, and we wont stay if hes not there. Friendly, attentive, personalbe. Always a smile and willing to go the extra 50 miles for us. The 5 stars for service is for him!
Came for lunch. It was basic pub fare. Table had the chowder, hot turkey, and house burger. Mimosa and Ceasar special was great. Unfortunately there was a hair in the gravy which diminished the experience completely. We didnt fuss but we werent offered anything in terms of compensation either. Not sure Id make a point to come back if I ever end up in St Johns again.
Amazing service & delicious food! I highly recommend a moose burger with a salad! Vegetarian options: Salad without bacon.
Its a 24/hour Celtic diner, in downtown St Johns what more could you want?!
This is getting a one star for me. The server took 20 minutes to bring us 3 pops, place wasn t even busy. Finally after being there about an hour we got our food. The spin dip was amazing but out of 3 main courses and 2 appetizers that was the only good thing on the table. The pop was almost flat, the calamari had maybe 10 pieces if squid in it, the rest was a big ball of pineapple, olives and tomatoes that we had to pick apart because they clearly never shook the basket as it was frying in oil. One Celtic burger got ordered without RED onion but instead both came out without red onion and one came out without onion rings on it(the whole reason we got the Celtic burger) the Patties were dryer than cardboard and burnt to a crisp. We didn t even finish our burgers. The fries were dry. My friend that ordered the Alfredo said it was gross as well. No point complaining about it as there was clearly a language barrier with the server. We will not be back. Me and my partner paid 100 bucks to go home and cook food and our friend paid around 50 bucks and before taking her home she stopped for food. How this place has a 4 star rating is beyond me. And to charge so much money for food I wouldn t even give my dog is ridiculous.
It s my first time being in this restaurant and it would be my last the vibe in here is great good music and good coffee one of the best coffee s I ve ever had the beans are perfectly roasted let s talk about the staff so kind and welcoming their customer skills are on par I definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone who is looking for a good place for a coffee and chill environment service with a smile!!!
Very good food and reasonably priced. The moose burger was so good!
Food, service and pub are all excellent, well worth a visit
Having a decent all hours resto in a place like at Johns is a god send. There when you need it and always welcoming. 00
Great place for a lunch date.
Went here while in St Johns for dinner and drinks. I was with 4 other people. The lady serving us was friendly and knowledgeable. The drinks were good and the food was decent. The location is nice and the service was prompt. I definitely recommend this place.
The food was amazing, we had Jiggs Dinner Pie, COD tongues and their chowder. Soooo good. I will have to come back and try fish cakes they are suppose to be good too
Traditional atmosphere and food! The food is delicious, but the large amount of sweet potatoes that come with this traditional dish attacks my stomach. The cod tongue is very good. price? Its not cheap.
Dropped in with my kiddo for a bite, food was fantastic. We were barely out the door and my little man was planning his next visit
Waited for about an hour for lunch, was told the kitchen was backed up - Ok, No big deal. It happens. Ordered a sandwich and fries. I ended up leaving after having one glass of water over that time. As I walked out, the same server said the food was being prepared. I had not seen this server up until this point. Other than when I initially sat down and she took my order. This was at lunchtime, no one else in the restaurant was waiting on food as far as I could tell. Two other tables including mine were waiting on orders for the same amount of time. Get it together guys, hire more staff. Heavy smell of cigarettes blowing past my table. Was extremely unpleasant, thankfully it went away. Not a good look.
Took my family out for dinner all 7 of us enjoyed the atmosphere of this lovely restaurant. Lots of food options and delicious drinks! Highly recommended Celtic Hearth !
Everthing on the menu is fabulous! Service is impeccable.
The food and service both are up to the mark.
I will NEVER shut up about how good the food was. I could have cried out of joy because of how tasty everything was of course I was gonna go out of my way to leave the most genuine review ever. I had a short trip here and one evening to choose a restaurant to eat at and this one did not disappoint. I would come back here without hesitation. Service and ambiance were as good as the cuisine was. Here s what I ordered/tasted; Tuna tartare so tasty and SO FRESH, Celtic burger and Moose burger were crazy good. Excellent meat and flavors! I was unfortunately too full to get that chocolate decadent I wanted, but I m not even sad because of how satisfied I was with everything. 6 stars out of 5!!!!!!
Great food. Nice variety. Friendly staff. Clean.
Beautiful decor, nice waitress, not very tasty food, it did the job but I wont go back.
The staff was amazing and its the only place around open 24h. The food was just okay.
Had my car broken in to Had i my belongings stolen. A lot of junkies out side just waiting for prey.
Stopped by today with my partner and it was fantastic. Our server was super nice and very attentive. The food was fantastic, and we opted for a local beer. Partner had the Jiggs Pie and loved it, it was a huge portion and it was very tasty (snuck a bit) I had one of the sandwiches which was also fantastic (though I ate it before I got a pic LOL). If we end up moving here we will certainly go back!
I loved the coziness of the place. It felt warm and homely. We had breakfast, which was moderate and delicious. The atmosphere made for great and intimate conversations.
Great food and a great place.
A great place, great atmosphere, great service and the food was total yum!
Great place to go when you get out of work late- they serve actual food late night, when other places only have a limited menu, if they are even serving at all. Dietary restrictions: They had celiac-friendly items on the menu, which is awesome
Do this: fly from the west coast to the east coast in one day, check into your hotel when you arrive in st. johns, then head over to the Celtic hearth once your settled. Dont eat anything till you get there. Dont worry how late it is, they are open all night. However, youll want a pint of something local (or two) so make it there before last call. Then order the moose burger. Its an experience you wont forget. Well done, Celtic Hearth.
Great nachos.. these people work very hard to serve you..we sat near the bar and watched them run
Took longer than most restaurants, however it was busy. Nachos were good. EDIT: Got the salmon the next day. It was excellent. Food : 5/5
No reservations in the summer - what changed?? Last week was no issue, no the person answering the phone says no...weird. Not going to wonder if I can eat somewhere or not...lots of other GREAT choices nearby...try YellowBellies or Gypsy Tea Room or The Merchant - awesome places that TAKE reservations!!
The Celtic Hearth once held the title of the best burger Ive had, but things have gotten a bit rocky since. The service and atmosphere here are always great, but my main issue is the massive increase in pricing. Prices in the past two years have gone up nearly half, and its honestly ridiculous - not to mention portion sizes. I went here today, and the food was decent (Ive only had one bad experience here with taste), but it was almost insulting how little you get for the price. They used to give you a full basket of fries that would fill you up by themself, but now it pretty much amounts to what would be in a small McDonalds fries.
They did not have brunch on Sunday I tried their mussels and sent them back because they tasted gross. Felt sick that evening for a wee bit Do Not get the mussels here, they did not care just made a big deal about voiding the cost of them for me. I tried mussels in many other places on water street and elsewhere in St. John s and they were delicious by the way
My favorite after bar dining!!!!
Great to get outside and eat some good food!
Dawson made this place a 10/10 <3 Food
One of the terrible restaurants in town. Everyone working there have no clue what they re doing. I waited there 30 minutes just to wait for them to say they have long wait they can t get anyone in. Two delivery drivers we re waiting there 45 and then got send away without giving them order saying they never received it. One of the skeet told them order is being prepared and then other girl saying that they never received order. It was just ridiculous
this has become the place to go! late afterwork most every where to eat is closed, but this 24hour restaurant is open, the guys on staff are awesome and the food is tasty!
There is definitely a management issue at this restaurant!! Although we were told it would only be a few minutes to wait for an outside table, we had to wait over 30 minutes. The staff seemed very confused as to who was sitting customers or serving. We finally ordered 3 appetizers that took over 40 minutes to come. Part of our meal was cold. I can t blame this on the servers but the management who was not delegating their staff properly.
Lots of staff (saw us yet made no eye contact & kept walking passed us) yet not one acknowledged us 4 women !! Food was ok...nothing to brag about...calamari had breaded pineapple & red peppers (not indicated in menu). Lots of restaurants in St Johns, go to and other for great service & amazing food !!
Our server was so super busy after Gerorge St. Fest but still managed to have time to talk and was very friendly
Good Irish pub. Had fish cake and beer
Weve eaten here several times and the food is always wonderful. Love their French Onion soup! Servers are always friendly and generally attentive, but the last couple of times we were there (afternoon), they had club music playing loudly in the restaurant and it spoiled the atmosphere for us. Our group could hardly hear each other speak over the annoying thumping. With such quaint decor, please consider mandating atmospheric Newfoundland/Irish music rather than letting the younger staff choose the playlist. Ty
Great pub if you are in the downtown!
attaboys :)
They make good Irish coffee.
Great late night food spot. Great fish and chips.
Biggest disappointment of the trip. The decor is nice, but the food is terrible and overly expensive. We ordered a squid as a starter, it cost $18 and we mostly had fried pineapple.
This place is a tourist trap. I ordered the fish cakes as appetizers, I could not taste any fish. It was all mashed potatoes. 17$ for two bites. For the main, I ordered the pan seared cod. I received a deep fried cod with about 10 french fries for 35$. The portions are extremely small. I finished the meal and I left with an over 60$ bill and was still hungry. Avoid unless you dont mind overpaying for a tourist trap restaurant.
After a dreary day, this was a great place to come for an Irish Coffee. Loved all the vintage decor, friendly bartenders and nice pub vibe.
Went down tonight to pick up an order we placed over phone. Ordered a Jigs chips poutine with extra turkey & peas pudding and they made a Jigs pie with nothing extra on it. I drove out 20 mins waited 15 mins for the food and another 20 mins to get home to find out they made the wrong order and stuff i dont like. Bad service over all, not sure ill be interested in coming back to this place. Sat down there a couple weeks ago as well and the guy took 25 mins just to bring us our drinks and almost wrong in our order wrong but we corrected him as we were nearby but still i shouldnt have had to do that. Then they called us and told us it was our fault for saying poutine instead of chips but i was sitting next to my husband as he made the order and they understood we wanted the chips and they forgot. Anyway I dont recommend this place to anyone anymore. Giving 1 star is too much.
Best poutine in St Johns, chicken gravy
We absolutely loved the outside dining experience! The St. Johns Pedestrian Mall is the bomb! The Celtic Hearth has a nice enclosure to keep some of the wind and the sun off you while enjoying this street vibe. Our server was top notch and the food was fresh and tasty with a reasonable price. The one singular complaint was that my son found his hot turkey sandwich, though tasty, was a tad dry; he said cranberry sauce would have helped a lot. Definitely worth a visit!
Great food and service!
This restaurant was the first time eating there. The food we had was outstanding. They had a covered outdoor space, which was ideal for the weather, the hot sun. The restaurant itself was qaint with a nice atmosphere. The only small problem is that the washrooms were downstairs. Great place to eat and enjoy the downtown area.
First time food was good. Service was good.
Nice Pub with good service and good food. My family ate there and everyone found options to their liking and our server was friendly - even when she had to tell us that one of our orders wasnt available because they ran out of flat-bread.
We dropped in for late night dessert and coffee as everything else was closed. The server was enthusiastic and friendly, but the rest was a disaster. My baileys coffee didnt have whipped cream on top as advertised. The blueberry crumble was maybe 3 oz, a tiny ramekin not worth $10. It came with ice cream that was already 60% melted when it arrived. Tasted nice though. They were out of chocolate cake so we ordered the apple torte. Good lord. A dry ricotta-based cheesecake with a transparent layer of burnt apple slices on the top, I could barely get my fork thru it, it was so hard. Was supposed to come with ice cream, but didnt, just whipped cream. Add a cold irish coffee, the bill for $40, and the fact that the CH is open 24 hrs for some reason, disturbing the area with its music till late at night, and I would say I have no desire to eat real food here, or give them any more of my money.
Tourist trap. The food quality is way below standard and doesnt meet the price. Vastly overpriced.
Worst service Ive ever had. I bring my girlfriend all the way from alberta for her birthday. We get there late, around 230 and order food and drinks. They took so long we almost walked out, got served around 310...than this idiot walks over to us twirling a flash light like a baton and yells at us we have 8 mins to finish our drinks! Than he comes back when were almost about to leave and literally takes the beer out of my hand! Will never return to this restaurant...
I have nothing negative to say about this place. Nice atmosphere, the service was great... (Thanks Leslie) I had the braised lamb shepherds pie and it was amazing. Literally one of the most delicious gravies Ive ever had, and Im a tough sell. I plan to return so I can try the moose burger.
The food was good except we had no utensils to eat with and no staff checked on us and I had to go track down cutlery myself. Waiting on a drink took forever. Our waitress was sullen and sarcastic and rude. The food was good but overpriced.
More good music food on George NL.
Sat on the patio, really nice. Server was slow, and the food was just okay.
This place is so neat. Very full historic information. We opted to sit inside as the patio was fairly full and glad we did. Great food and great service. A must go while visiting.
I have come back to CH time and time again for years, often for drinks and the wonderful calamari which includes fried pineapple and jalapeños! I m am writing this as I take my last bite of the moose burger absolutely phenomenal!! Wheelchair accessibility: Front entrance offers little accessibility, and the bathrooms are located downstairs
The food is amazing, especially the moose burger.
Took a chance and stopped in for supper. Flatbread, turkey soup and fish cakes were very good. Great location on Water St.
Terrible service. A joke. Lots of other places around.
5 ladies arrived for dinner and were sent upstairs to the pub. After approximately 20 minutes the waiter arrived and took our drink orders. Two of the drinks were returned as they were not the drinks ordered. The waiter took our food orders, after 1.5 hours we left the restaurant as the food never did arrive. Incredibly poor service, there were no apologies and did not make any attempts to rectify the situation.
The ice tea was too sweet other than that everything else was great
Fun place to check out live music and drink beer! The music was a good mix of East Cast music and familiar favourites. The staff were great and the place was hopping!
Great little Irish pub in the heart of St.Johns. Fish and chips are very good and staff are very friendly.
Glad to find One pl serving late as I d Just arr by bus from other end of island plus local bus fr. University. 11 pm dinner of hot turkey sandwich just perfect. New in town server guy fr. Bangladesh very enthusiastic. TOTALLY SHICKED to see Hop Valley beer there, oh,4000 mi from its home in Eugene! So try a Newfie beer some other time. Loved the pics n wacky stories of Long ago drinkers, characters
The Celtic Hearth is a nice place for dinner and drinks. It even has a couple vegetarian dishes which I appreciated. I had the falafel burger and fries. The food was really great and I was impressed by the fries. They were very nice compared to the fries at similar places. We also had onion rings, wings, and french onion soup. The prices are slightly higher here compared to other restaurants in the area. The server was really great! Overall 4 star. Would recommend.
We went for breakfast and I had the Newfoundlander and my wife had bacon and eggs. Both were very good but my Newfie Steak(Bologna) was pretty thin. The service was great and the atmosphere nice. Prices were in line with other restaurants for breakfast which tends to be on the high side in St. Johns. Its open 24 hours and was very clean.
Had a Guiness burger and a salad there. Tasted Perfect. Friendly staff as well.
Disgusting breakfast would not give it too the dog too eat
Friendly staff, good fish & chips and the bathrooms are clean
Stopped by for lunch while waiting for my flight and was very impressed! Fish and chips came out fast and hot! Great atmosphere. Server was great! Highly recommend!
We have often gone to The Celtic Hearth for a beer after work. The atmosphere was great and the staff were always friendly. However, this morning, we went in for breakfast. The atmosphere is still the same friendly pub vibe, and the staff were extremely friendly, as always. My husband and I ordered breakfast...bacon and eggs over hard, for him, and sausage and eggs over easy for me. After a lengthy wait, our food arrived. Where to begin? Both his eggs and mine were over hard, with all of the yolks broken. The sausages were like sawdust. The filler was so pronounced, leading me to suspect the quality of the product. The home fries definitely came from a frozen bag, cooked in lower temperature oil, so that they were soggy with grease. The toast was barely warmed and sparsely buttered. The coffee...was good. We were never asked, by our server, how the meal was. I suspect that it was because he was afraid of the answer. All of this for a total of $66.00 Very disappointing. I make it a personal rule to never send food back to a kitchen. I just pay the bill, and look at that as the cost of a lesson learned.
A wonderful place to visit! Open 24 hours!
Very good meal
We had some really great food here. The spinach dip is a must have. One little complaint about the entrees: The ingredients werent fresh (particularly the salmon). However, everything was fresh out of the oven. Service was quite nice - fairly fast, and our server was sweet. Its a cozy spot - a little cramped, with a small capacity - but to be expected for a restaurant in the downtown area. Id come back just for the spinach dip! A really nice spot for a dinner out with a friend or two.
Good for a big american breakfast
Chowder is awesome, excellent service too! And having non alcoholic beer available is so nice
Amazing service! The bartender was phenomenal and very fun made me feel at home. I ordered several moose burgers while here and this is by far the best moose burger in town! Hopefully I can get back here in the future! Love this place!
The food and service were good, the menu isnt bloated. Eggs Benedict was cooked nicely, fish was crispy and the tartar sauce was some of the best Ive had at this level of restaurant. However it is not overly family friendly, the restaurant is very dark, the washrooms are tight quarters and there is an absence of a kids breakfast menu. Noticed afterwards there was a kids special written on a sign outdoors but the server never mentioned this. Kid-friendliness: Not a first round kid restaurant for breakfast or very small children. Older toddlers will do fine with the simple kids menu they provide.
Hit or miss. The Sunday night bartender spent 45 minutes on the phone and couldn t slur out the bar name so I could call a cab. Pretty sure a large part of their job is making sure they aren t liable in case of drinking and driving but I doubt an asteroid would get her off the phone.
