Nice place, had the cod burger. So simple but it was fresh and so delicious!! Service was very good. Atmosphere was ok.

Terrible experience. Came in group of 20 for Christmas luncheon, we pre ordered our food , reservation for 1pm. I waited for over an hour for my food, everyone else had finished eating and I still did not have my food or my drink. I am very unhappy, it was my first and last time visiting this restaurant. Rating is 0 stars

We booked a table here to have dinner with some colleagues. The food was decent but nothing fancy. The atmosphere was really nice and quiet which was perfect. Likely will return but it s not a place I would be bouncing off the walls to return to in terms of taste profile.

Amazing food!!! Had the mixed green salad with beets and goat cheese, the crusted cod and baby turtle cheese cake. Although I have a shellfish allergy I had lots of options!!! Highly recommend!

Enjoyed a meal here with my wife and in-laws. Chicken skewers, Cajun chicken fettuccine, mushroom and leak risotto, cookies and cream cake and coffee liqueur, all excellent. Being a family with a sense of humor, we very much enjoyed our waiter James who also had a sense of humor. Very much recommended.

Visited the beautiful St Johns for the first time. I decided to visit a well known franchise establishment where I had the worst customer service experience ever. Was heading back to my hotel and decided to go into The Gypsy Tea Room. The staff here were awesome. Ally, James, Jazmin and Paul are the real definition of true of how welcoming , loving and family oriented Newfoundland people are known for. I had to become a repeat offender to this establishment 6 times for the 4 days I was in St Johns. This team is an asset to any business!!!

We had just arrived to St. Johns and were roaming around with our trollies craving for a bite. This one didnt look that bad and the sea options on the menu didnt seem that bad. We waited for good 10min to be greeted and another 10min for a drink. The cod tacos just needed some salt and the sea food chowder wasnt that bad. As we didnt have high expectations it was an overall okay experience. But wouldnt recommend it. The next day we went to the restaurant next door (cant recall the name) and had a MUCH better service, food and drinks, to our happy surprise.

I went there on a Monday evening at 7pm. The restaurant was dead with a handful of people on the patio. Our appetizers were forgotten and our food arrived without cutlery. We tried to notify our waiter but he was busy standing at the bar playing on his phone. After 10 minutes of waiting and trying to get someones attention I had to go to the bar and ask him for cutlery. It was not a great experience. I definitely will not be going back.

Really not impressed with this meal. I had the crusted cod, which tasted fine, but was pretty cold. My partner had the Seafood linguine, which was pretty bad. Definitely used frozen muscles, which was refuted, but I trust my palate. Incredibly expensive for what it was ($95 for two entrees). What a waste of our final meal in this lovely city. Definitely better options in the St. John s downtown.

Its a waste of time and money, you should find other places to eat

Icy welcome. Overwhelmed waitresses. We feel like were bothering them when we ask them a question. Over $50 for 2 soft drinks and a plate of chicken nachos!

Celebrated my in laws 50th anniversary here and the service was absolutely amazing. Casey and Doug were wonderful and the food was delicious. Highly recommend this place for events and celebrations!

Ate on the patio during the height of the pedestrian mall so perhaps Ill have to try again. Food was just middle of the road (nachos were cold) beer was overall well stocked with what I believe is a seasonal rotation. Will try again and dine inside with different dishes to see if this is really the gem people say it can be!

My wife and I stopped in here for dinner a few times this past week. I am severely allergic to shellfish, and touring within the eastern provinces of Canada can prove difficult when searching for a restaurant that can or will accommodate my allergy. The Gypsy Tea rooms staff were very kind and super accommodating. We noticed there were many gluten-free and nut free options for everyone. I would say they can confidently add shellfish-free to that menu as well! A few things we tried from there include; Calamari.. lightly breaded, with red onions and a delicious house-made Tzatziki sauce. The Cajun chicken fettuccine - kept coming back for this one, probably one of the best pastas around. Oven roasted red pepper soup - absolutely perfect balance of salty and creamy/sweet. Topped with fresh crumbled feta cheese and some Chile oil... soo good.. chefs kiss! Even their French fries were done to perfection. Would 10/10 recommend trying this restaurant if your touring St. Johns and looking for something other then pubfare.

Strange experience. Starting out with finding many items on the menu were no longer available. Okay I was a little disappointed but rolled with the punches. Our meals were excellent. The strange part was our server. I will just use her initial K. She kept disappearing not just from our table but from complete sight. When it came to the bill she disappeared completely and we ended up going to the cash machine and asking to pay explaining our server had disappeared. For awhile the servers there seem not to know who K was and then one ran off and came back with a machine so we could pay. Never did find out where she went. Thankfully the food was good and the atmosphere was good. Iain

There s a lot to unpack here. To start, their online menu is inaccurate. When we were seated and ready to order, they informed us that certain items are no longer offered. Furthermore their descriptions on their printed menu are inaccurate and incomplete. For example, their beef tacos come with loads of raw onions and beans which were not mentioned in their description. Now to the quality of their food that was ordered. Their signature salad had no more than 2 handfuls of lettuce and it was wilted. And that was $22. The tacos were dry and hard to chew. This was replaced by the very nice waitress for a chicken pasta dish , where the chicken was also very tough,dry and was not eaten. Their red pepper soup was horrible. It tasted more like a tomato paste starter base. I doubt it ever saw a red pepper. The restaurant has a very nice decor and friendly staff and if that s a good enough reason for you to spend $100 for a tomato paste can of water, two handfuls of lettuce and a bowl of pasta ,then this is the place for you.

Our food was cold! The wait staff were overwhelmed. Very disappointing.

Service was slow but started off really great. Once the food arrived, the level of service switched from a 9 out of 10 to virtually non-existent. The issue came when we had a salad delivered with no dressing - we asked for dressing and this generated attitude from the waiter. The salad dressing didnt arrive till the rest of the table finished their food. He proceeded to ignore us for the rest of the time we were at the restaurant. We even had to go to him to get the bill.

The food was disappointing and the service was lacking. The table next to me was having problems which seemed to impact me as well. My waiter was clearly having problems and no one was helping him. Lots of people standing around which screams of poor mgt.

I have to say I was really disappointed with my experience here . The food was mediocre . It was $36 for seafood linguine and there was one mussel, two empty mussel shells, one scallop and two shrimp I left hungry the portion was so small . The bread with the meal was stale and awful! The music was so loud and a speaker above our table we had to yell at one another and could not have a sensible conversation . Used to like this place but I have to say I was super disappointed

Weve been here twice and both times were excellent! The service was great with an attentive server and help with menu content. The meals we chose were perfectly prepared and tasted great. Well definitely be back!

Best food I ve had in a while! The portions were perfect, I don t feel over full and by far the best spinach dip I ve had ever!! We ordered the Turkey Brie Sandwich, Birria tacos and spinach dip and 10/10 would recommend every item. Service was great too! Perfect lunch spot

We went in today to celebrate my sons birthday. Waited for the food for 1 hour 15 minutes!! They brought 2 out 4 plates with wrong sides and 2 of us didn t get utensils. We ordered 4 steaks medium-well, one of them was medium! We ordered 7up and received plain soda. Additionally I m not sure our waiter was sober. For $320 I would expect a better service . Would not recommend. And they didn t offer a discount or dessert for the inconvenience like any other place would do.

I fell in love with this restaurant. There was a snowstorm that day so it was not busy at all due to it. The two staff working were extremely polite. Menu has a bit of everything on it. Prices are typical for downtown st. Johns restaurant. Highly recommend the baked brie appetizer and the NY style cheesecake! Parking: Parking is paid on street if you can find a spot or paid garage parking in a few locations. Bit of a walk, so if you have mobility issues might not be a good fit. Street has shattered disability parking spots but they fill up fast. Kid-friendliness: They dont have a kids menu and the chairs in our section at least were high sitters. But thus restaurant is more directed at adults than children.

The 5 of us had the BEST experience - the food was great but the service was 10/10! WARREN kept us laughing & put up with our antics. We invited him out to the Ship but he didn t show- shame, I should dock off a star . But the memories live on <3

Nice enough place. Server was pretty good. Had the Nachos which were pretty good. Entree was the smash burger which was DRY. Way overdone. Fries were good. Wife had the Cod I believe that she found pretty average. Daughter has the fish and chips which she seemed to enjoy but hard to just the pallet of a 12 year old.

The gypsy tea room is a fantastic restaurant for a milestone meal. The food is exquisite, with things like gastrique sauces, duck confit, truffle shaved fries. However the meal is still distinctively Newfoundland, with things like dressing crusted cod, and seafood a plenty. The volumous wine selection is a divided by types of wine, but there is also a variety of local beers.

Vegetarian options: Great veggie bowl that was very tasty! Food

I recently made reservations here for my parents to try. They had a very pleasant experience here. The staff were friendly the food was on time, fresh and flavourful. Ordered the calamari and curry chowder for appetizers and for the main they both had Cajun chicken linguini. Overall great spot for a date night or special occasion.

Wonderful service! As we were celebrating an anniversary they seated us at a more remote table and did not rush us in any way - we were there well over 2 hours in a lovely setting with perfect service: courteous and friendly without being cloying, and most efficient. Our dinners were truly outstanding! The only negative to my mind was the constant hip hop coming from the speakers - I am no fan - but I believe few others would have a problem. Very highly recommended! And do not fail to try an Espresso Old Fashioned!

Came in for a full service lunch, while on business. The menu wasn t expansive but everything I had was well prepared. Chose the leek and potato soup, fish cakes, and peanut butter tart for dessert. They also had a decent selection of hot teas. Service was good!

My wife and I had our wedding at the Gypsy Tea Room at the end of march in their wine cellar. Doug and his team there were fantastic. Doug was incredibly professional and very experienced in planning weddings. His help made the ceremony and reception go off without a hitch. The meals for the reception were also excellent! My husband and I had our wedding ceremony and reception at the Gypsy Tea Room in their wine cellar May 2023. Doug and Courtney were fabulous to deal with, I really appreciate everything they have done for us. Doug was incredibly professional and very experienced in wedding planning. We had about 50 people at our wedding and everyone raved about the food. Compliments to the chef, everything was absolutely incredible. Many thanks to Doug, Courtney and the team at Gypsy Tea Room for making our wedding day so special. I would highly recommend Gypsy Tea Room to anyone who is thinking of hosting a smaller wedding or special event.

My cousin & I came in for lunch. The staff was very attentive & went out of their way to make us feel special. My cousin ordered the turkey brie something with pepper soup which she loved. I ordered the blackened salmon which I didnt care for much but I would still come here again. PS. Do not miss their addictive chocolate mints which they so generously plied me with!

The food was very good. The Brie was exquisite, the duck special was outstanding, gypsy salad delicious and refreshing. Not to forget the calamari just yum. The cocktails were also good The service stuttered when the crowd appeared but it caught back up

Tourist trap... Run away from this place... changed my review from best nachos to the worse place for any and all food... And we ordered more than half their menu. They used to have the best chicken wings in town, Mary Browns included... I mean street food in India is better than the garbage they sell... the nachos went to 1/3rd the size and being $20 last year to $30 + extra for quac, and nachos were burnt. Sherry, our server was mean, rude and inhospitable when we mentioned the steak was over cooked. The messy fries were cheese whiz with mcains fries ... P.s. we loved this joint until December last year, they had the best food and service, and not once but consistently... Unfortunate they will be gone in less than 5 months if they keep this up.

I am visiting Newfoundland and visited the Gypsy Tea Room. Beautiful restaurant and food, but the real star of the experience was our server Ursula. She went beyond and above and really showed us true Newfoundland Hospitality. We will be back just for her! She had amazing recommendations of the menu, nightlife, and true Newfie experiences!

We came here for brunch and enjoyed the morning on their outdoor patio. Service was slow, but we understood that the tourist season just began and they were busy. The eggs on our Bennys were overcooked and not runny. The hash browns were good but salty. My boyfriends eggs Benny was missing ham and his side of bacon was replaced with a fruit cup, none of which he asked for. Overall, brunch was quite average.

So that was an amazing lunch! A great step up from standard pub fare. 11 people and each one had an amazing experience.

The Cajun chicken fettuccini is my absolute favourite!!

It was a bit busy at around 2pm. Their outdoor eating area wad blocked and busy during the Pedestrian Mall. I went inside and sat at the bar. It was about 10 minutes to be served and 20 minutes to receive food. I ordered the loaded street fries and a Corona. They could have been great except the fries were cut very small, something in the dish was extremely salty and the jalapeños were candied (not hot and very sweet). I didnt eat it all as the meal was too salty. The Corona (on tap)was enjoyable and the bartender was nice though.

Be sure to sit upstairs by the bar for a great atmosphere to hang out with friends! They have a great selection on tap to enjoy.

I really love the ambiance The soup, Jerk chicken was excellent, and should be a fixed menu item. The prices are far to high, clearly targeting the tourist trade...what about local trade? The menu is to large, not locally sourced and predictable. Worth a visit, but bring lots of cash.

Our waitress Ursula was charming & knowledgeable ! Loved chatting with her ! Had the best dinner ever x 4 ! Service was spot on, best food ever (4 women cleaned our plates...lol), loved the atmosphere !!! HIGHLY recommend !!

We celebrated our wedding at the Gypsy Tea Room (both ceremony and reception) - the location was wonderful and Doug was amazing to work with to make everything happen as we dreamed - cannot say enough nice things about his hard work and dedication.

We only had drinks here but they were great.

We went there on a Thursday night at 6 pm. Dont understand why then cant make reservations. We were told to wait for a table outside for one to become available. One did, and they said sorry its already gone. They never advised that there were already people at the bar waiting for tables. We went inside after this happened. I have to say Ive eaten many times at gypsy & this time the food was really not good . It was cold, and my group of 5 said, Dont send it back well be here another 2hrs.

We had really hoped to enjoy this place, but given the other reviews, must have been there on an off night! Unfortunately found the service to be quite slow (due to there being limited staff), and the food was not as good as anticipated. The cod was quite cold when it arrived and the flavour left something to be desired. However, the interior is very cute and the cocktails were fantastic! A great spot to visit, but it just appears there might be some inconsistencies in food quality and service depending on the night.

Quite disappointed with our dinner here. We went on a Tuesday and it appeared as though the staff was overwhelmed. The servers and bartenders were very nice and apologized a few times, but it was almost 50 minutes before we saw our drinks and 2 hours before we got our food. Food did not live up to expectations. For $40/plate we expected a lot more.

Excellent food, great atmosphere

Gypsy has always been one of my favourite places to go. The food was average, I had the chicken skewer it was a little dry and was cold. The calamari was delish! The service was the worst I ve ever had, the server Gary was rude, blunt, we waited 40minutes to be offered a drink, when we were ready for the second we waited another half an hour and finally went to the bar to request drinks.He did not come back to check our drinks, offer us water, to see how we were doing or if we needed anything. The food was slow coming but we understand that it was a busy night for the restaurant, it happens. We were not offered any desserts. Ally is amazing and she more than made up for our bad experience with the other server.

My sisters and I visited Gypsy for our birthday celebration, my sister and I (twins)were celebrating our birthday. Our server was Gary, he barely greeted us and took 40 minutes to come back to take our drink order, he didn t return to ask if we needed refills or anything. When we needed drink refills we had to go to the bar to ask. When he finally came back for our drink order we ordered our meals/starters rather then wait an additional 40 minutes for him to come back again. While ordering one of my sisters asked if she could replace one of the sides and he asked what do you want? , when my other sister asked what the side options were he again asked what do you want? It took an hour and a half to get our starters then another 40 minutes to get our mains. The table behind us who ordered after us received their starters and meals before we got our starter. We did actually ask to have our scallops with our meal rather then as a starter but we ended up getting it as a starter. The food was good for the main part except my sisters kabob was cold. One of the girls working at the bar (Ally) must have realized how badly Gary was treating us because she actually came over to refill our water and apologize for the long wait, she then took over our service for the remainder of our time there. Ally was wonderful and if Gary needs some additional training I m sure he could shadow Ally to find out what a great server does. I don t live in the province anymore and I actually suggested going to Gupsy for our birthday dinner but after this experience I would think twice before suggesting this as the place to celebrate.

We had our wedding here and it was everything we wanted! Doug and his staff went above and beyond. They were so accommodating, the environment was so relaxing. He calmed my nerves before the wedding and during (bride). The food was amazing, everybody loved it. The venue was a really good price and it was beautiful. Happy Bride, groom, family and friends! I would recommend 10 times over! -Haley and Nathan Dietary restrictions: I m lactose intolerant and he handed me a lactose free cake. Anyone who is lactose knows how hard it is to be accommodated but the gypsy had it covered! They have Gluten free options and dairy free and they all taste so good. - Haley

Pleasant waitress, but very slow service, in spite of there only being one other occupied table (a two-top). Our order was lost, and when it was put in we still had quite a wait... Arrived at 7:05, served at 9:25. 4 of the 5 meals were not hot or even warm. A few of us have very sour stomachs as I type this review, about two hours after leaving the Gypsy Tea Room. Gotta say, aside from the ambience and good music playing, I cannot recommend this restaurant.

Beautiful wedding venue with great cocktails. Only negative thing I could note is the business name being a racial slur, which has kept me from going there for years until I attended wedding there. Hopefully they rename it someday soon to be less offensive. Other than the name, great spot. Beautiful inside.

My experience here was horrible. The menu is written in a way you cannot tel the price of what you are having. If you are not rich, i definitely would not recommend. They make you pay for a bottle of wine and expect you to leave more than half of the bottle behind. I had an awful experience, customer service was trash, i even suspect one of the staff was drunk on duty . I DO NOT RECOMMEND!!!!!!!!!!!

Debit was down so i had to go to the bank to get cash before i can get back with the cash they asked the person who i was with and was still in the restaurant if i ran off and wasnt coming back hahahaha. Here is an idea get better wifi. Your supposed to be a good reasturant. Will never recommend this place to a friend or family.

Not enough variety!

Pleasantly surprised. Judging by the name, I was expecting something entirely different. We arrived a bit early, and were seated promptly. The waitress Danielle was very friendly, my wife and I asked her for suggestions and both dishes were amazing, and were served really fast. We also ordered a couple of specialty cocktails: Espresso Martini and Raspberry Mojito, but she notified they were out of the raspberry flavor so we switched to strawberry. Martini was good, and the mojito a bit too sweet for me. Finally, for dessert we had the chocolate cake, which was rich and delicious. Very generous portion, easily shared by 2. We will totally come back again and again.

My husband and I had our wedding at Gypsy Tea Room and it could not have been any more perfect!! From the first contact, the staff at Gypsy were so helpful, approachable and accommodating. The day went off without a hitch, with Doug helping us with cueing the music, responding to all guest requests, and even fixing my dress before I walked down the aisle! We had comments from several guests that it was the best food they had ever had at a wedding. I will be recommending this as a wedding venue to anyone getting married in St. Johns.

We were a group of 4, ordering different dishes. The staff were very friendly! Watermelon Mojito: delicious, light and fresh - 5 stars! Cod: delicious, side vegetables (snap peas and carrots) were excellent Burger: just an average burger, had a bit if a spice which overpowered the rest of it a little, fries were really good Salmon: delicious, with a fantastic sauce! But the mashed potatoes were the real star of the dish - incredible! Nachos: were average, not quite enough cheese so the toppings fell off easily Carmel cheesecake: perfect balance of light and creamy, lovely caramel sauce Chocolate torte: rich and smooth, strawberry sauce was nice and fresh but it could have used a bit more

I go to Gypsy frequently and the food and service is consistently excellent! I most recently visited with a large group and the service was seamless. The blackened salmon is my favourite.

Ate lunch here with our 2 children ages 5 and 7. We ordered soup, poutine and Brie. Everyone enjoyed everything. Our service was very friendly and we really enjoyed our experience here.

Very good food. A little bit more of a fine dinning experience. Awesome atmosphere. Waiting staff were great as well. Highly recommended but it is more expensive than the average restaurant but worth it. Dietary restrictions: Lots of options for people with dietary restrictions. Clearly labeled.

A very pleasant experience. Service and food were great. Employees were friendly. I had the Duck Duo, which was well prepared - the kitchen ran out of vegetables, but I was offered other options (I came very late in the evening).

The food was amazing and fresh! The service led by Ashley and helped by Matt and Olivia was also terrific. We had a great time and I would highly recommend you book this for any event or just for a night out in Halifax for great service and food! Loved it and what a great first experience in St Johns

Delicious food and wonderful atmosphere

i don t like to complain about restaurants because i know how hard everyone works but this was almost a month ago and i m still bummed about it. i went with a party of 7 for my birthday dinner on july 1st and we waited an hour and a half for our food. i ordered the vegan soup and bruschetta and both came out with cheese on them. when i asked the waitress if the cheese was vegan, she said that parmesan cheese doesn t contain dairy, which is simply not true. it was just a really bad experience overall especially since my bill was still over $100 and none of us received any compensation for our wait. it was just really bad over all especially on my birthday.

Very disappointing. Not worth your time. Wife had a dish with Thai peanut sauce. The kitchen was low on sauce so they melted peanut butter. I asked manager to call me but they did not. Waitress was very nice. Drinks were unique and ok. Most worrisome issue is the lack of communication when I requested a call. Second issue is the substitution of peanut butter for peanut sauce. Avoid this place

We had a wonderful evening. It was a special celebration and it was a great experience. The food was fantastic as well as staff, Nico, was attentive and very helpful.

Wonderful event space particularly the basement with high ceilings and lots of windows.

One word: Disappointed. Among the restaurants in Canada that I have been to, the Canadians are usually very friendly and always very helpful. We arrived at this restaurant and just felt like we were annoying and too much, even though the restaurant was empty and it was 1:30 p.m. No smile, no sympathy. This is a shame, the wine list was extensive and of good quality, the food menu had a good number of choices, not very plentiful, a little expensive but the dishes were good. Fries are delicious!

Went for lunch with my brother. His meal was great, while I had to send mine back twice. The 2nd time, the cook forgot to add the meat to the meal, so I gave up at that point. Service was fantastic however.

went there for my nephews wedding and dinner.....food was really good ....had beef tenderloin potatoes and veggies....my compliments to the chef

Omg heard amazing things about the place 1st time there I this witness loud, rushing for us too order fish was not very good, fries I say warm cold gravy sad really nice place but not with what I paid two of has had little under half this retaining waitress took our drinks told her when she come back said we are closing bar felt like time for you too leave now . Wasnt happy with it after that went go bathroom she yelled pravite party down there other young men said washroom. Oh my

Very good service. We take only apetizer, but it was good. Nice place to take a drink. Price little high.

The beer was warm and tasted awful and had to be returned by three of us. Fries came already salted and were barely warm. Four people ordered fish and chips..the portions received by two of us was half the size of the others, and a thimble of gravy was $3 extra. The food was pricey for what I received and there wasnt many people in the restaurant. I did leave a small tip for the server who was ok but I will think twice about eating there again.
