Update June 2023 - The waitress who served us was wonderful, and the food was great. Moose stew - for 8 dollars!

Really good poutine.

Terrible. Food was cold, nobody checked in once our food arrived, and we were seated for 20 minutes before anyone came to take a beverage or food order. The AAA beef burger was dry, overcooked, and resembled a 2 day old McDonald s happy meal burger.

Great food, amazing service. Love the decor on the walls. It was extremely busy while we were in town, and they worked extremely hard to get you seated and taken care of. It was a great choice for food burgers !

The food was nothing to write home about. Over priced. An hour and hafe to get our meal. Didnt realize they had to go catch to fish before it was cooked. Wouldnt recommend this restaurant to anyone....even people I dont like. Fortunately the lady serving us was pleasant.

We sat down for a nice supper, at first costumer service was great. We ordered our food and drinks all was well. Although once we finished our drinks we waited about 35 minutes until someone finally got us some more drinks. The server didn t check up on us and we had to call her over after waiting so long for drinks just to tell her we wanted them. We ordered two more drinks and two glasses of water. She came back with one of the drinks wrong and said are you okay with this drink which it wasn t what I had ordered so I asked for what I ordered. We never got our waters. Food was good, although I don t believe it was worth the price it cost! :)

The food was great. Service was prompt and staff were friendly.. I almost ordered the Royale with Cheese but settled in the eggs benny as I wanted something a little lighter.

Had reservations last night for 6 people. When we got there the place was 1/3 full. Placed an order for drinks and appetizers, drinks came out quickly, but an hour later still no appetizers, asked our waitress and she advised she had no idea when to expect them, obviously she seemed frustrated. Spoke to another table there and they came an hour before us and received their food but it was so badly burnt they sent it back. They got up and left and did other people. Our first time there and we will definitely not return. Very poorly run. Obviously kitchen problems. We left and when to Magnum & Stiens and had a great meal! Don t recommend this place!

Waited 3 hours for breakfast there on Sunday past with very few people inside or outside. It was bacon eggs toast. Worst service ever and will not return.

The service and the ambience are really good, but the food was a bit disappointing. We ordered several burgers, and the meat was quite dry and tasteless. I would not recommend it.

Im on vacation. We stopped here. Foods are great and service is very good. Im stongly suggest this restaurant.

We stood by counter when we arrived for 5 minutes waiting to be seated as servers walked past us multiple times. I had to stop one of them and ask where we could sit. When seated, they forgot about us and it was 15 minutes before we got up and told them we were eating to be served. Took another 30 to get food and wasn t busy. We asked to ensure we weren t forgotten again. The food was ok. Burger was in a cheap bun but was good. Fries didn t taste like anything. Also had to get up and find server for additional drinks. Atmosphere was very nice. Won t be returning.

We were excited for fish and chips on our first day in NL and were thoroughly disappointed. Soggy fries swimming in grease like they didn t let them drain before plating. The fish had potential but came cold and mushy, although the batter was crispy. We told the server and the remedy was to bring us 3 new pieces of fish at the end of the meal. IMO fried fish is not something i would take home and reheat. The staff tried but just missed the mark on this one with the server being a bit huffy. Great atmosphere, nice street side seating.

Worst restaurant experience Ive had in St. Johns. Waited well over 2 hours for food that was mediocre at best. The wrong side was broght to two out of 4 of us when the food finally did come (which waitress quickly corrected when we told her). People sitting next to us were waiting even longer and eventually just left without eating. Contacted restaurant about our experience but they didnt respond.

Visited The Salt House in St. Johns, Newfoundland, and it was a delightful experience! We all had the fish and chips, which were absolutely delicious. The fish was perfectly crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, paired with golden, fluffy chips. The highlight of our visit was the exceptional service we received from our server, Lois. She was extremely friendly, attentive, and made us feel right at home. Her warm and welcoming demeanor added to the overall wonderful dining experience. If youre looking for a fantastic place to enjoy fish and chips in St. Johns, I highly recommend The Salt House. You wont be disappointed!

Service and location were outstanding. Ordered wings as an appetizer and they were not great, over sauced and dry at the same time! Main course of a burger and tacos were very good. Fries were ok but oddly tiny cuts which was odd. Atmosphere was pleasant.

One of the more reasonably priced restaurants downtown. Food is great, nice atmosphere and friendly staff. I had the breaded chicken sandwich and fries and it was very nice.

Ive had this food twice. Between me and my woman we have ate fish, pasta and burgers. I got to say it was very tasty both times, beer was fresh. The food was also not expensive. I have nothing to complain about.

The Touton Burger is Awesome, hope they keep it on the menu after the burger challenge is finished!

The best place we have tried in St. Johns! We are here for a short trip and the food was amazing and the service was exceptional! So happy we came. I did not get our waitresses name but she had shoulder length blonde hair and stated it was her first day back after a few weeks. She was incredible!!! We will definitely be back! 100 stars!

I felt cheated. The fries were very short most of them not even edible enough to eat. The wings were too dry. Wasted my hard earned money. Please management should look into this and improve. There are better options and services out there.

waited 45min for seafood chowder + calamari, then ANOTHER 45min for our pasta and salad... asked the waiter for hot water TWICE and was ignored, finally the third time she gave us a snarky laugh like its so hot out and u want hot water? frankly, none of ur bsns??? the food was fine i have no complaints but the wait times were abysmal and we werent rly checked up on or offered updates. would avoid

Service and food a complete miss. We walked out after sloppy, mush brussel sprouts and over cooked soup that was served cold without a spoon and nobody around to ask for one for at least 10 minutes. Wait times are atrocious.

Food was good, nice atmosphere and location. Prompt and friendly service. My Aperol spritz was a little light on Aperol and spritz, seemed to be a lot of soda.

First, our server Courtney was wonderful; charming and efficient. The salads were really good, but the mains, salmon, and cod were just okay. The veggies and cod both were well prepared but bland. A little salt and maybe pepper would go a long way here. The mashed potatoes with the salmon were delicious. This is a pub, maybe we should have stayed with pub fare, burgers, etc.

Missed out on the moose burger when I was there but got the fish and chips and it was really good!

Sad experience. Saturday PM, restaurant almost empty, delay in ordering and receiving our plates which arrive lukewarm! Order error, missing items arrive 30 minutes later. No measures to compensate for this. How can you miss such a basic brunch menu? In short, to be avoided completely.

Looking for a burger? Not the place to go. At Johnny & Maes Food Truck, I got double the size of this places burger for the same price, and thats hell of a burger I got there. With 4-5 time the fries you get here with your meal. The location may explain what you get for the buck, but never so much. Johnny & Maes Food Truck serve the best burger you can find in town!!

Few experiences can match sitting on The Salt House patio on Water St in St Johns. Dining on a spectacular NFLD cod burger, fries, and a delicious strawberry salad, with added shrimp was simply superb.

I went for midweek lunch with a group of coworkers.The general consensus was the food was very underwhelming and service medicore at best. I wouldnt bother to return, although I have heard some good reviews from friends.

Had the pan fried cod....delicious! Ashley, our server, was fun too.

A nice little spot with very reasonable prices in the heart of downtown. Ive been here a few times and the food is consistently good with large portions that leave you full and happy. This has become a go to for us when were downtown looking for some good eats.

We stopped by for a drink and a quick bite. I had their IPA which was really good and my wife had a glass of house red which she liked. We ordered mussels and they were on the small side and many didnt open. We ordered the wine and dessert for two, which came with two glasses of wine and cheesecake. The cheesecake was very good and a great deal. The service was great too.

All the food was made fresh, not frozen, which is what excited me about the calamari, but I wish the food was warm. The calamari was tasty, but both dishes arrived luke warm, and the large tentacle pieces were not cooked in the middle. The muscles were ok but the fresh garlic and onion sprinkled on top gave them a funny smell. The service was great along with the craft beer and my friends fish and chips were very good. The fish arrived hot and was cooked perfectly.

This is my second time dining at The Salt House Restruant. The food here is excellent and has service to match. We throughly enjoyed our meal and will defnitely return. I wouldnt hestiate to recommend. The atmosphere and food quality are higher than a standard family restruant, and their prices are excellent. Perfect for a working lunch, date night, or dinner with friends.

A great stop in St. Johns! The balance between price and what you get I feel is just right. When I visited with my family, the meal here was all of our favorites. Great drink deals too, and I find the atmosphere to be very nice here.

Honestly, I don t know where to start. I m very picky when it comes to restaurants and food quality, and what I had the other night was nothing short of spectacular. The best and I mean BEST pasta that I have ever tasted and the best service I ve ever encountered. I truly just want to say THANKYOU for making mine and my girlfriends night, a very special and relaxing, unforgettable night. The food is big portions, and I m a big guy who eats a lot, I was stuffed couldn t finish it! The waitress was so kind, joyful and truly just wanted to make sure we had the best night possible. I have not stopped talking about my experience to this day, and I assure you we will be back within a few weeks!! HIGHLY recommended!!

Last night was our second time dining at the Salt House & it did not disappoint! Service was wonderful and the food was delicious and done perfectly! The prices are so reasonable! Love this restaurant and we will definitely be back again!

Im only giving even 1 star because I can not leave a review otherwise. If I could make it negative stars, I would! I booked a reservation for myself and my spouse to celebrate a special occasion. The reservation was for 9pm. We showed up on time and were greated with a less than accommodating hostess who informed us that we couldnt be seated because the kitchen had absolutely no food left. No apology - just a snarky look on her face. I asked why they didnt call people who had reservations to let them know this in advance and was met with a shoulder shrug. They did, after all, take my phone # when I booked the reservation. I would assume it would be for such reasons as this? But realistically, how many restaurants run out of food? They obviously werent prepared and as a result, our special night out was ruined. 9pm on a Saturday night isnt really an opportune time to look for the dining experience that we were hoping for. Perhaps going forward, when you book a reservation at The Salt House, they should say that your reservation is confirmed pending that they are not ill prepared and run out of food! Or do yourself a favor and just pass on The Salt House altogether.

Menu wasnt huge but the food was good. Was part of a large group of 13 people with reservations so there were a lot of different items ordered and no one complained about what they received. I was told the pricing for food would be expensive but it all seemed very reasonable. The only issue I have is I ordered the club which was more of a chicken burger than an actual club sandwich. It was still very good, just not what I was expecting. The staff were amazing and super friendly. Very accomadating and were happy to help out with any questions or issues anyone had. Over all Id definitely recomend the spot for a food night out.

Lovely atmosphere, good service, delicious food, reasonable prices. I had the cod au gratin and it was excellent, but the best part was the portion size. I left feeling full, but not so full I felt gross. Would definitely go back.

The Salt House is fabulous place. The food is second to none, a great selection of beer on tap as well as wine and cocktails. Our server Nicole was very attentive and polite without being intrusive. If youre looking for good food and drinks at great prices, look no further. I highly recommend The Salt House.

Lovely spot for lunch in the afternoon. Staff are friendly, very attentive. Theres a woodstove! Not that its needed late afternoon - so much SUNLIGHT! Try the Brussels Sprouts, best Ive had anywhere. I live here now.

Burgers and fish tacos...great fries

We were seated and the server was very friendly and knowledgeable of the menu. We were very hungry as were at an event all morning and had not had breakfast. This was 3 PM by now. The food was horrible. My 2 piece deep fried cod was warm and the batter was soaked in grease.All of our fries were basically the same. Black and greasey. Barely warm. My coffee with Baileys was warm with a glob of cream that wouldnt melt. And those cutting boards that the food was served on are disgusting! They cant even be put in the dishwasher. How clean is That? Use a plate for Gods sake! Overall terrible experience and wont be back.

appetizers took over an hour and entrées were almost another hour after that. servers were nice but didn t go out of their way to make the experience better.

We did not eat here, the food may be good but we did not get the chance to find out. We went in around 7:30 on a Sunday night. The place looked 1/2 full, the male employee asked if we had reservations, we did not. His answer to us is we are only doing reservations in a demeaning tone. I don t know if it was because we were not dressed up or he had a rough day. But a better answer was available, and there were lots of empty tables. We ended up going to the Celtic harth and were really happy with the staff and the food.

I went back with my family to experience a meal on their patio and they didnt disappoint! Excellent service from our very friendly host Natasha and a great meal prepared by Gavin Johnson. We had the fish & chips and calimari as a starter. The fish was light and flakey and tasted like it just came out of the water. The calimari was cooked perfectly and the batter was very light. Will return again! 2021 review: Excellent service with great tasting food. I had the southern fried chicken sandwich with tomato, lettuce and pickle and a side of Ceasars salad, my daughter had the cheeseburger and poutine. Both were delicious with generous portions, great atmosphere too. Would have taken them up on the $5 glass of wine if the timing had allowed.

Perfect size teriyaki stir fry w rice and veges. Yum. Bathroom called a water closet!

6 waitstaff just standing around, while 4 tables waited 15 minutes to place even their drink order. Kegs that took 30 minutes to switch out Food was good which was the only saving grace.

It wasnt bad but it definitely left a lot to be desired. We called the day before to make sure they were serving brunch. When we showed up they took our drink order after about 20 minutes. I ordered an orange juice which had gone bad. I asked for a replacement but it wasnt any better. About 35 minutes later, the server came by to take our brunch order. We went to give our order the server told us that they werent doing brunch. Had we known that when we first sat down we probably wouldnt have stayed. After telling us there wasnt brunch we looked at the menu again and waited another 20 minutes before the server came to get our order. About an hour and a half after arriving the food was brought out and the busser had no idea which plate was which and was calling them by names that were not on the menu which made it very confusing to sort out whose food was whose. While the burger I had had great sauce the bun was the cheap buns you could get at the grocery store and the fries were more like mushy little nubs. I dont think Ill be back. Two stars for the super friendly staff.

Put our food order in , about 20 minutes later the server told me the item I ordered was sold out and gave me the menu to look at, she never came back to take the order so I went up to the bar to place my food order and order our table another round of drinks . She came back to tell me that item was also sold out. Put in my 3rd order , that side came out cold. Ordered 2 glasses of wine both were notably extremely small portions the second one being noticeable less than my first. Looked around at other tabled with glasses of wine who received much more in their glass. My friends fish and chips came out cold. We let our server know . We were starving at this point but had to run to a show . She gave me 3$ off my meal. Absolulty horrible service. I didnt even touch my side I ordered but only received 3$ off the food.

Food and service was great! Nachos, poutine, salad and other apps all were tasty. Also had live music going on which added to the ambiance.

We waited an hour for fish n chips. Two tables arrived after we ordered and received their orders before we did - and it was the same fish n chips. Our ticket included items that we didn t order. No apologies, no concessions. We didn t even touch our 2nd drink as we were waiting for food. Sat outdoors - was freezing by the time we finally received our order and it was incorrect. We ended up feeling REGRETFUL for choosing The Salt House out of every other establishment on Water Street. It was obvious that they lost our order and were completely unapologetic for it. Had positive dining experiences elsewhere on Water Street as I would urge you to indulge elsewhere. Adding: We both got diarrhea the following day. If I could give this place zero stars, I would.

The food was pretty good but I wanted to review the restaurant quite low as the wait was extremely long! My group went around 630 to 7 and only left around 930 purely only on waiting for food. For an hour and a half we were waiting on our main courses and our appetizers but they ended up forgetting about our appetizers! It wasnt all too busy in the restaurant either so we were unsure why the wait for our food was horrible. I felt bad for the servers as they seemed stressed too! It was a bit of a mess in there! I dont really like making poor reviews but I feel like my experience was rough and wanted to share.

Had a very uncomfortable experience overall. When we arrived we were told it would be 15 minutes until the kitchen opened no problem.. but after this we were told it would be another half an hour. After this we had a period of over an hour of waiting for a server to help us. We asked another server and they told us someone would be with us soon but another 45 minutes went by without a server, even though we asked for help. After this, we felt management and other servers looking at us, pointing at us from the inside of the building felt very uncomfortable there but really not sure why? Got a server eventually who served other tables (who just arrived) before us. When food came it was fine. Drinks were fine.

We had to wait over an hour for the food some of which was cold. The server didnt remember the beer I had and instead of asking brought me a different brand. We were not offered a discount to compensate. Will not eat there again

Took too long over a hour and a half to get food. Werent checked on for drinks and only 6 tables were taken after us and about 7 wait staff. Pretty bad service if you ask me and food not worth the price.

It was just ok. I had wings that appeared to be dried up and a salad, all just ok. My mother had the fish and chips that she reported was just ok.

Stopped in for a drink and an appy to share between myself and my husband. Would have stayed for more but there was really no options for vegetarian food here except an uninspired stir fry. The Brussel sprout appy was really really nice but for two drinks and an appetizer it was really expensive.

The servers were wonderful the food is horrible. No one at our party of six was happy with the food. Dry burgers with not much sauce, tacos with dried up chicken. Just bland. Never again.

The staff is amazing (very attentive and pleasant), they have a good range of pricepoints, the food is delicious, and the drinks are good! The kitchen had a friends food come out tepid. The server apologized, took it back, and had new food on the table in no time. Looking forward to coming again!

Good food and prices. Cool atmosphere. Servers are lovely though stretched thin on busy weekend nights, and bathrooms unattended to. Ordered a mojito and it wasnt made right - really sour. Took it back to the bar because the waitress was so busy and they added simple syrup rather than making a new one. I would stick to the wine and beer here, cheap and cant go wrong.

Love this place! Great spot for brunch, and the servers are very polite. I would recommend the breakfast skillet. Comes out very hot and delicious! Mimosas are fantastic as well.

The Salt House burger is fantastic. Seasoned to perfection and flavourful. Fries are crispy and delicious. One of the best spots in town.

Really good seafood, pleasant and prompt service. Good beer. I had the seafood linguine and loved the sauce, the shrimp, the scallops, and the mussels. My wife had the cod au gratin and thoroughly enjoyed it. It had lots of cod and cheese. Cant go wrong with lots of cheddar. The only mild complaint is they didnt seem to have any parmesan cheese. They had a couple of good local beers on tap and I enjoyed my Dark Horse.

Really enjoyed the Salt House. The staff was friendly although busy. The food was delicious and the prices fair. Serving sizes were good portions.

Price was great but service is slow. We ordered with and 8 top. Apps came fast but it felt like the mains didnt even get started until they confirmed the apps had been eaten. For such a small menu, you would think they could cook it faster.

Service was great. Sat outside on the sidewalk deck which could do with a little more shade. I had the stir fry with curry and my friend had the Kahuna burger. Both meals were very enjoyable.

Really great restaurant to check out downtown! The service was incredible, the food was even better!! We all ate something different and everybody enjoyed their meals (and drinks) greatly! The flat bread is to die for and their fish and chips are also stellar! We were there on a very busy hot day in the pedestrian mall, but service was still second to none. It was great to have such quality food and service while getting to enjoy outdoors!!

Called to make a reservation for two for Saturday evening on a Thursday noon.. when we showed up, there was no record of it.

The food was good but it was disappointing that there werent many vegetarian options. The menu on the website was not the same as the in house, so it was disappointing to find that several things that looked like they could be made vegetarian were not available. We also waited a long time for the food after we ordered, which can happen but was still a shame as it wasnt a weekend or anything. Will definitely try this place again but didnt love it on first try.

Brought my visiting family here, there were 11 of us. We had reservations. Our food was greasy, cold, and pretty gross. We waited 2 and 1/2 hours for our food. I only give this place a 1 star because at least the server was amazing. She was so sweet. She brought us out some bread for the kids to eat as some of them were getting really cranky. I will never eat here again. I would never recommend this place. I had a salad that was drowned in vinegar. My husband had the butter chicken that tasted like a microwave dish. My son had the spaghetti which was the grossest looking and tastings spaghetti I have ever had in my life. I would recommend this place to seriously change what they are doing wrong.

We were excited to try The Salt House with guests from out of town, but thanks to poor management we waited 75 minutes and still hadnt even gotten our apps. The poor server had to deliver bad news three times, saying that she was sorry about the wait and that she had no estimate for when either the apps nor the entrees would be ready. There was a reservation of 16ish people at the same time we were in, which obviously made the workload a lot. However, if you know you are short-staffed, then you should stop taking customers that you cannot properly serve. Also, it is cowardly to make your poor server deliver news like that. The manager paid for our drinks, but couldnt even come say hi to us and apologize himself. The server was awesome and she deserves to work somewhere that the management team doesnt leave her out to dry. Very disappointing experience, and I think the employees and customers of The Salt House deserve better.

Great food, drinks, and service. Come earlier in the evening if you dont have a reservation given they do fill up quite a bit. Prices are very reasonable considering its in the heart of Downtown. Food is generally yummy, with decent selection and portions are quite generous. Theres a sizeable patio outside as well, weather permitting.

Bartender needs training. Under cooked Brussels sprouts with strips of bacon? Fish n chips doughy tasteless batter. Gravy was off. You can t produce food like this in this location especially and expect to survive. Will not be back.

First time at the restaurant, and I was genuinely excited to try from what I had heard about it and from what I seen online, but unfortunately the restaurant didn t live up to my expectations, we were waiting nearly an hour and a half just for our appetizers, and didn t get our actual meal until I asked about it, which was about half an hour after the fact, when we got our food it looked phenomenal, but looks can be deceiving, I myself had the chicken carbonara, which was an awesome meal definitely an 9/10. But the problem lies with my friends food, the spaghetti was quite soapy and sour, and the chicken tacos were small and also kind of sour, the saving grace of the tacos was the fries that came with it, but all in all the food wasn t entirely terrible, however the servers were incredibly kind about the service and I do understand that some nights are busier than normal, but when tables that came in an half an hour after us get there meals before we even get our appetizers, there is a problem, 3 stars would eat there if service improves.

Very good food. service was slower but it was a busy night, but worth the wait. we had jiggs croquettes, fish and chips, cod au gratin ans soup of the day...all delicious. If we lived in town would happily go back.

First time here: A reservation for 6 at 5pm with what turned out to be a not very busy time. Our waitress was new and she announced that at the start, so Ill give her a 5/5 for a valiant effort. Everybodys food seemed good, my wings were very dried out though. (picture Clark Griswald eating Christmas turkey) Beyond that it was a good experience. Although at over $100.00 per couple, it should not be a lacking experience.

My girlfriend would say 4 stars but I have to say 3. She really enjoyed her burger but I was really disappointed in my chicken burger, especially after being told its a customer favorite. It was fine tasted like KFC spices, but was super tiny the peice of chicken was totally lost in the bread an toppings. Service was good and prompt, so I might try again but will be skipping the chicken burger.

The stars aligned when I booked a reservation here on Saturday night for my 30th birthday celebration. Our party of 7 was seated in a gorgeous corner booth on the lounge side and got to listen to fantastic live music throughout our entire stay. We had lovely food, drinks and made lots of memories! So grateful for the lovely staff who made sure we were looked after. Will definitely be back on another trip to town!

I wouldnt recommend this place. Overall vibe isnt great. Servers are lovely, but food is kinda meh. Our pasta arrived cold. Someone also kept changing the music halfway through each song which was just odd.

We went to The Salt House on Saturday, October 30th. We had reservations for 730, we had a window table, as per request. It was my partners birthday dinner. We were informed by our server that they didnt have any steak, ribs, nor calamari. Everything we had wanted. Who runs out of steak and ribs at 730 on a Saturday night and the place is only 25% full? We could see the kitchen from our table, one of the cooks had several meltdowns while we were there. Long and short, fish and chips disgusting. The seafood fettuccine (frozen scallops used) was sub standard. Front staff, not skilled! Its really not hard to get this right!

Love the food, service, and atmosphere!

I wish I could tell you about the food but we walked out after being ignored by servers for 15 minutes. Heard other people asking for basic things like water refills so we took that as a sign that the service was not going to get better if they ever came to our table.

Really enjoyed the food here! The staff was super friendly, the environment was nice and cozy. Definitely recommend.

Had my first visit here the other night for my work Christmas dinner. Ther service was sub-par, and the restaurant itself smelled like sewage which made it really hard to sit and eat. The food itself wasnt bad, but it wasnt good enough for me to want to come back.
