VU is a restaurant and bar overlooking the harbor, downtown St. John’s. Casual and chic, VU offers an eclectic variety of small and large plates, made fresh and in-house. Vu is a portal to both the iconic beauty of the St. John’s harbour with the best view in the city and a full-on sensory dining experience. Small plates include Pan Roasted Sea Scallops, Crispy Korean BBQ Chicken Wings, and Beet & Arugula Salad. Large plates include Chef’s personal favourite, Cider Maple & Mustard Braised Pork Shank, Vu Burger and Pan Fried Local Cod. Every dish is evocative, with unexpected finishes such as lemon and sundried tomato butter, splashes of bourbon-infused vinaigrette, or crunchy oat and nut granola.
The food was delicious! We had wings and scallops for starters and the cod for our main. Service was top notch. Beautiful atmosphere. Thoroughly enjoyed the experience! Would highly recommend.
perfect ,food was so delicious. The guys were so friendly, kind and respectful. In addition, the atmosphere was great.
Our experience overall was good bc we're chose to make it good. The view was amazing. There were several items on the menu unavailable: salmon, cauliflower bowl, lamb stew, no egg whites to make whiskey sour etc... I really wanted the cauliflower bowl. I don't eat bacon and everything else on the menu had bacon. I did request less salt for the lettuce wraps and they did that perfectly :) Food overall was quite tasty! The atmosphere was ok. Covid barriers are still up which is a downer.
It was our last night in Newfoundland and we wanted to treat ourselves after working the Avalon Expo. I met the owners wife and she said I had to try the food here after I talked about my passion for eating duck. Well we made it in time and I was definitely not disappointed. Our server and bartender was Krista. She was very friendly and got us a perfect seat for the view to watch the boats coming and going. The drinks we got were the house white wine and an old fashioned. The house wine was surprisingly crisp and had a great taste. Alex’s old fashioned was made really well. A little on the sweet side but she said she liked it more than other places. Our chef was Chris. He definitely knows what the heck he’s doing back there. High five to that guy. For dinner we had the scallops, chicken pasta, and of course the duck for me. Dessert was the lavender crème brûlée and the chocolate mouse. The scallops were the best in Canada I ever had. Cooked to perfection. And the sweet bacon and curry. Omg it was really the best thing ever. Please try it if you go. They are so fresh, caught by Angus I was told. So Angus good catch! The chicken pasta, with hand made noodles hit the spot. The noodles were made like I was actually back in Italy. Never found a chef that got is so good in North America. The sauce was delicious and chicken was tender and juicy. The duck as you all know me I judge pretty harshly. It’s my favourite to have when eating out to a nice place. So the duck was pretty good. It was a touch dry for my taste. But it comes with cheese/bacon risotto. And man that really did make it a great meal. The veggies were amazing. Alex kept taking mine lol. I did find also there was little to much berries on the duck too. It kind of took away from the duck flavours I love so much. But I pushed some of the berries aside and then I got what the chef was saying in the dish. It really popped for me then. And the cold smoked flavour was amazing. Definitely loved that added touch. The lavender crème brûlée was perfect. I could taste the lavender and the creaminess was very smooth. Alex and I both loved it. The top was flamed just the way I like it. Hard as heck but also not too thick. The chocolate mousse with the caramelly sauce on top was to die for. Alex was full from the dinner but she ate the whole slice. I did get one try of it as she was protecting it from me lol. It was amazing. The chocolate was delicious and not as soft as other mousse I have had in my travels. I really enjoyed that about it. And getting a little of that caramel sauce was the cherry on top. There’s no cherries on it but there is lots of blueberries right from Newfoundland. Would definitely recommend if you’re coming here for a visit to the rock!
Debbie and her coworker were super great ! Food was OK, not more, and it arrived too fast, as we were not done with our drinks yet. As if we were in a hurry. But nice evening overall. Thanks to Debbie !
What a view at the Vu! Wonderful mussels, decent salmon, and a molasses cake on a slate that rivals any stickey toffee pudding. The Partridgeberry cocktail was great... I think it was called jelly bean row. #ExploreNL #TMACtravel #tmacnl30
We arrived at the restaurant without reservations, but they kindly seated us by the window, offering a gorgeous view. You can enjoy your meal while watching ships move in and out of the harbor. We ordered the scallops, which were fresh and delicious. Our waitress, Krista, recommended the fish and chips with gravy and stuffing, and it did not disappoint. We would love to go back again.
I recently dined at Vu Resto and was thoroughly impressed! The atmosphere struck the perfect balance between cozy and sophisticated, making for an unforgettable evening. Each dish, from the succulent steak to the perfectly cooked seafood, was a testament to the chef's expertise. Don't even get me started on the pasta and chicken - pure delight! Everything was complemented by prompt and friendly service, ensuring our glasses were never empty and our needs were met with a smile. Highly recommend Vu Resto for anyone in search of top-tier dining with a wonderfully inviting ambiance.
Very nice restaurant. The food was next level delicious The menu is creative with a variety of options. I tried one of the signature drinks also excellent. Janet and Rod served our table and both provided wonderful and attentive service. The restaurant has a pleasant ambience. I would recommend to others!
Great view
Very good restaurant with a beautiful view. Delicious food and great service. Highly recommended Food : 5/5
The view at the restaurant was fantastic, and the service was really quick. However, the food was just okay for me it tasted a little bland, but that could just be because I personally prefer stronger flavors. Overall, it was a good experience
We had a rotten experience here on Oct 12, 2024. The only good thing about it was the cocktails. We waited 70 minutes for fish and chips, the server rushed us when we were trying to order, we felt she was dismissive and rude. She forgot to bring back our drink menu when we asked. My appetizer was burnt, and I couldnt even find her to flag her down to tell her. The fish was great, but the fries were cold. Two other tables were waiting a inordinately long time as well, while one table that came in after us was eating their meals well before us. A nice atmosphere, decor-wise, but otherwise not worth the cost, and we will not be returning.
I live in a different province so was excited to see my sister and nieces for an evening out starting with a wonderful meal.....it certainly didnt happen because it took 2 hours for our entries to be served.....nobody explained why and nobody took ownership especially our server.....some wine was provided but, sorry , not good enough. The cocktails were ok and the food was average. This is the second time in three years that Ive been to Vu and I wasnt impressed the first time either....wont be returning and cannot recommend this restaurant.
Potatoes cold. Steak over cooked!
An amazing place where you can enjoy not only the food but also the views. Parking: When you arrive at the restaurant, they allocate a parking space for you.
We had an amazing experience here. The food was incredible and the service was 5/5! I would definitely come back here.
The food, service and view were 10/10! Shout out to Gavin our wonderful server and Chef Moody! Highly recommend!
Nice vu (view). Wonderful service, but the meal was lack lustre especially for the cost.
Came at restaurant at 11:40 for lunch With a group of 3. Only 1 other table was busy. Waited the food until 12:50, have not received anything besides cod bits special. We did informed our server that our friends have a flight and we would like to be quick, he promised food will be served shortly, but 25 minutes after that, still nothing. Left the restaurant without waiting the rest of the meal. Very disappointing experience and poor customer service as the server started blaming us, that we can t wait more and should remind him about our friends flight one more time.
The food tasted amazing but some people s food at our table came out cold. The wait of 2 1/2 hours to receive our food was too long. We did go with a huge group 16 people and had made a reservation for an 84th birthday. We are used to waiting when we go as a large group but this was a bit too much.
Staff was great. Food was okay. My sister enjoyed her chowder and duck, I tasted both and found chowder good but the duck had a strange after taste. My lamb shank was fall off the bone tender but the sauce had zero depth of flavour, the flavour was more like a jar of crushed tomatoes.
Good food, good ambience. However, the pricing on their menu on line is a few years out of date. Everything is about $10 more, which I dont really care about, but considering the website is (c) 2024, I cant help but think that this lack of pricing update was intentional.
Food was delicious and our server Andrea was the best!
Great location food and service
Lovely service but heavily understaffed, got here at 6:30 and at 9:00. we still haven t received our main meals. The kitchen staff is moving terribly slow! They told us 5 mins for meals 20 mins ago.
Food is decent but at those prices it should be much greater than decent. Wheelchair accessibility: Not accessible. Food : 3/5 |
Pretentious restaurant where the waiter asked if we had a reservation then said he could fit us in as we were only two. There for lunch, only three tables full the whole time we were there. Two soups, cod buds and glasses of wine cost us over $100. The view was great, which is what you are paying for.
My significant other and I went there to celebrate our anniversary. We had a reservation but we showed up earlier. We were prepared to wait but they took us in right away. The service was phenomenal from the moment we set forth in the restaurant. The young lady who welcomed us and our server made for a very pleasant dining experience. The decor in the restaurant was very welcoming plus you cant beat the view of the harbour. We started with drinks. I had a Rickards Red. She had a Disarrono with Pepsi. Our appetizers were very tasty. I had a Brussel Caesar salad. She has scallops. For our main course, she had the salmon and I had lamb. Both entrees had generous amounts of Veggies. For dessert, we shared a toberlone cheesecake. It was an all around enjoyable dining experience. We will be back :)
Just under 40$ for burger fries n pop. Wait time was almost 1 hour for meal to come out lunchtime with a restaurant less than half full. Server was very friendly but disappeared until food arrived. Burger was dried out, just above room temp. And fries mainly consisted of end bits. Disappointing visit
Our highly anticipated New Year s Eve experience at Vu Resto turned into a sequence of profound letdowns, ultimately leading to an overall disappointing evening. With expectations set high for a memorable night of exceptional food and service, our hopes were swiftly dashed from the onset. The evening commenced with a rather lackluster array of non-alcoholic beverages, a surprising and disappointing start for a venue of this stature. The limited options initially presented by the server failed to include a mocktail, which, upon specific request, was begrudgingly provided for my mother, who was driving. This oversight in offering diverse drink choices seemed out of place for a supposedly upscale establishment. Transitioning to the fixed 4-course New Year s Eve menu, our only option for the evening, the dishes consistently failed to meet the mark. Starting with the Amuse-Bouche of watermelon with whipped feta and balsamic reduction, the dish lacked sophistication and was notably unremarkable. Following this, the calamari, saturated in grease and devoid of flavor, left an unpleasant taste lingering. Adding to the dismay, the dining choices were inflexible and disappointingly limiting. When ordering the Steak au Poivre, the chef s insistence on cooking solely to a medium-medium rare doneness without any flexibility for alternative preferences felt restrictive and incongruent with the expectations of a premium dining experience. Moreover, the lack of knowledge and dismissive response from the server regarding sauce options highlighted a glaring gap in professional service. The main courses further compounded the disappointment: both mine and my fathers steaks were served raw in the center and cold, while my mothers pan-fried cod, served over potatoes, was equally unsatisfactory cold and utterly lacking in flavor. Attempts to address our concerns with the server were met with a dismissive and unhelpful attitude, exacerbating our frustration. Upon escalating the issue to the manager, the response remained lackluster, with an inadequate attempt at resolution through the offering of complimentary champagne, already included in the fixed menu. Even the dessert, a meringue with mango sauce, was overly sugary and challenging to consume, further contributing to the culmination of our unsatisfactory dining experience. The menu, priced at $150 per person, offered a 4-course meal with complimentary champagne as the only included alcohol option, setting the stage for our anticipated dining experience. Regrettably, this high price point failed to match the quality of both the food and service, resulting in profound disappointment. The rushed service, evident from the immediate succession of courses, made us wonder if the meals were pre-prepared. Despite acknowledging the potential challenges of a bustling New Year s Eve, the inadequacies in service and quality of dishes at Vu Resto fell significantly below what should be expected from a high-end establishment. The lack of attentiveness, dismissive attitude towards complaints, and overall quality of the meal leaves us deeply dissatisfied. Our experience stands as a firm testament to the divergence from the positive reviews we had heard about Vu Resto. While we understand the pressures of such occasions, friendly and attentive service should remain a priority. Unfortunately, based on this disappointing experience, we are firmly resolved against returning to Vu Resto in the future.
Don t know where the high ratings come from. We waited an hour and a half for the food to come out. Me and another in the party ordered the seafood tagliatelle and it was very disappointing for the both of us. The seafood had zero flavour and the texture of rubber, you know when you ve been chewing gum for so long it s lost it s flavour? That s what eating this seafood tasted like. The noodles were also under cooked and still hard in the middle. I don t know how they justify the prices when serving less then mediocre food.
good team
Whst a view!! Service was great and friendly. Food really great!!
First time at Vu and it was great meal. Four of us went there on a Thursday night in January. Service was spot on and the wait staff were excellent. There were a few menu items missing. We really wanted to try the bone-in pork chop but we were told it was not available. This wasnt told to us until after we placed our order. Should have told us in advance. I had the seafood chowder and the strip steak and my wife had the spicy sweet potato soup and the fish & Chips. Our 2 friends both ordered the salmon as their main. All were exceptional! If there was a small complaint, the F&C was under a heat lamp for a time as the chips were a bit on the soggy side. All in all it was a great meal and I would recommend them. By the way, the Vu was fabulous
A lovely place for a special meal. We had a New Years Eve supper with another couple. Food and Service was great. A spectacular View of St. Johns Hr.
First time last night for a date night and we sample many small plates and had mains. Everything was delicious, cooked almost perfect except my steak, it was perfect. I would have loved a few flakes of sea salt would have made it heavenly. Great view and the service was from I believe Monica and she was fantastic. Parking was a plus as well, especially during the winter when the snow piles are 6 ft high. Parking: Many spots for bar and restaurant patrons. Kid-friendliness: I wouldnt bring a noisy kid here, only good ones. Its a quiet atmosphere I found with mostly older diners.
The first time there. Definitely highly recommend. Service was fantastic, the food was delicious and the presentation was perfect. Parking: Great have own parking lot for the restaurant. Great for dt area.
Great view and ambiance. Friendly and efficient service. Very ordinary food which was a disappointment. There are better restaurants to visit. I dont quite understand how this place got such great reviews for its food.
Enjoyed a great meal with friends. Our server was amazing knew the menu really well was engaging and funny and made our evening a joy. The layout of the Restaurant takes full advantage of the harbour view with tables along the window and large raised comfortable booths behind them. We were a party of 4 and were seated in one of the booths on the upper floor and were extremely comfortable. Three in our party had the Southwest Inspired Seafood Chowder Corn, Potatoes, Carrots, and Bacon with Seasonal Seafood in a Spiced Creamy Broth. Delicious .. one of the best chowder I have had. As a main I had the Laceys Burger... 4 oz Pork and Beef Patty with BBQ Sauce and Smoked White Cheddar on a House-made Bun with Roasted Garlic Aioli, Caramelized Red Onion Relish and Vu House-smoked Pork Belly. Served with a Chicharron-coated Dill Pickle and Fries on the side. The burger was wonderful, very rich and delicious. My only comment would be the Bun was smaller then I would like. Two of our party had 8oz Pan Seared Tenderloin with Roasted Brown Butter Brussels and Garlic Smashed Potatoes with Chive Aioli. Served with Demi and Herbed Butter. The Tenderloin was cooked as desired and was very good. The final person in our party enjoyed the Hickory Smoked Blackened Double Bone-in Pork Chop with Loaded Mash Potatoes, Roasted Corn Salsa, Broccolini, Chipotle Root Beer BBQ Sauce. The chop was huge and delicious. Over all the evening and the meal at VU was wonderful and I would highly recommend it.
Great view of the Harbour. Excellent grub. Great drinks.
Fabulous tasting food, quick service, great price.
The food was good! (I had the cod with rice). It was a little confusing to find my way up to the 2nd floor because there wasnt anybody at the immediate entrance, but the place was cute. Nice view of the harbour.
Really tasty food. Great view. Parking: Off street parking with an attendant who directed us to a spot.
It was just ok. The steaks were bland and everything else we had was just ok. Wouldnt really recommend this place for the money it cost.
Me, mom and dad out for lunch, food was excellent and wait staff friendly. And well the view clearly a highlight. Mussels were very good!!! Huge size and plenty of them. Mmm
Excellent view.
Fantastic food and great service. The view at Vu is just the icing on the delicious cake. One of my fave local restaurants (shout-out Get Stuffed) recently closed and Vu has become my new go-to. The honey Buffalo chicken sandwich is perfection. The fish and chips is fantastic (the pieces of cod are massive). Get the classic margarita- you won t be disappointed. Also special shout-out to the man that manages the parking lot- such a gem. You don t go unnoticed.
Fantastic view and great food.
Busy restaurant for lunch and seems popular with the business crowd. We were lucky to get in without a lunch reservation. Service was great with no problems. The dining area is naturally lit during the day with a wall of windows to the harbour. Booths have plexiglass partitions between them. Ordered the Cast Iron Baked Brie, Fish & Chips, and NL Savoury Crispy Cod Sandwich. The baked brie was very good with blueberries, bacon, and fried onions. The fried onions would sometimes dominate the taste though. The crispy cod was good, not overly salted, and large enough for lunch. The fish and chips were excellent. Nicely browned, tender, and flavourful. Served with a tartar sauce and a spritzer of vinegar. Chips were well done and not overly salty which was appreciated. Overall a very nice experience.
Fabulous food with am unmatched view of the harbor.
We went for lunch. The servers were super nice and polite and we got served right away. The food was bland, the rice was undercooked and the cod was grainy and overcooked. The flavor combinations were odd and the carrots were a strange mix of sweet and spicy. Will not go again. The prices were high for what you get and there are other options in the city that have much higher quality for the price.
First time to have cod fish in st Johns, cooked at the right level and tasty. Service is good too.
Poor experience My wife and I have been going to VU for several years and have always enjoyed our experience. Unfortunately, our last visit wasnt that great. We decided that we would return so that we could celebrate our 27th wedding anniversary and what better place to do this but at VU. We have enjoyed most items on the menu but on this visit the food wasnt up to scratch. My wife is a big lover of salmon so when her salmon finally arrived it was over cooked and cold. My wife complained to the waitress, who suggested returning it to the kitchen but given that we had experienced a longer than normal wait time , she refused. I had the pasta dish and it appeared that it had been sitting as it was rather congealed. It was very disappointing given the occasion. Unfortunately our bill didnt reflect the substandard meal which was disappointing to say the least. VU, as previously stated, was one of our favorite restaurants but it is no longer on that list.
Great food! Food was a bit slow coming out but they were busy and it was delicious once we got it.
I had the opportunity to visit with my daughter for supper back in May when I was home for my son s prom and that really sealed the deal on having Vu host our wedding supper. We did change from the proposed per person pricing to the minimum spend for the evening which worked out perfect. Our guests were received and seated when we arrived, we were greeted by the hostess at the door and lead to the room which was set up perfectly for the number of people we had and for mingling and chatting. They allowed us to bring the cake in which I think there was a cutting fee or something but that was fine, we actually didn t even cut it due to everyone being full from the meals and apps. Everything from the drinks and wine, to the appetizers and meals were absolutely perfect. Everyone loved the variety and raved about the meals. Once the orders were taken, we we re kept informed of the timing and we were served first with everyone s meals out within minutes and not one mistake. The girls, Andrea and Monica, were amazing and I d love if you passed along our thanks again, they were funny and personable and felt like a part of our evening to be honest. As our last guests left and we were finishing up our last glass of wine, the girls came in to thank us and settle the remainder of our bill. I joked about a last dance and asked for Stairway to Heaven (like a teenaged dance at the Reid Center in Mount Pearl) lol, the girls lowered the lights, closed the door and played the song. The perfect end to the perfect celebration dinner. They even snapped a couple of pics and texted to us. And to top off the night, we had walked up from the Alt Hotel down the road and realized we still had the cake, there was another lady and I regret not getting her name, short hair and glasses that offered to take it and keep in cool until we could get it the next day. So just to say thanks, we went back again for lunch the next day. It really made our perfect day even better. I cant believe I almost forgot what brought me to your restaurant... The Vu!!!! with the room having ceiling to floor windows overlooking the harbour and narrows including Signal Hill, it made the perfect backdrop to our evening.
We came as a family, 2 adults and 3 children. Monica was really nice. The view of the port is very beautiful. In addition, the price is reasonable since the food is of very good quality. The portions are generous and Monica even agreed to make buttered pasta for my daughter.
Apps took 40 minutes after ordering to be underwhelming. Mains hit the table with two Luke warm dishes and one which was cold. Would of sent the cold dish back to be replaced but didnt see the server until everyone else was finished. Sent it back uneaten and did not order dessert due to lack of service. When she brought the bill, she took care of a round of drinks while leaving the uneaten $63 dish on the bill. Poor service with no attention to guests. Cold food that you couldnt even eat. Disappointing to say the least.
My second time having dinner here, and I have to say both visits were consistent with great service and delicious food and of course the view is amazing. I had the seafood pasta and it was delicious. Our server was great, I cant complain about a single thing. She was friendly and attentive and did not keep us waiting at any point. Definitely would recommend it and will be back!
Great restaurant. The food was beyond expectations! The staff are super nice!
Overpriced, underwhelming and disappointing. Tenderloin was served at a temperature that could be described as tepid at best. Brussels sprouts were rock hard for the most part and the garlic mashed potatoes were rather bland. The food was much better years ago when the restaurant was known as Portabellos. Service was decent and, as always, the view was beautiful. Go for the view, not the food.
Let me star with the positives and how I rate the food, there were4 people in our party and we had an array of appetizers, entrees an desserts. APPETIZERS: Scallops 5 star Cod Tongues . .5 star Mussels . 5 star Roasted Brussels Sprout Salad .5 star. SERVICE: SERVER Debbie, welcoming, efficient 5 star ENTRES: Chicken Parpardelle Pasta .4-star Rack of Lamb served with mushroom risotto .1 star should be removed from the menu Extremely fatty, very little, fat was not rendered, risotto undercooked so much the rice was still hard and at $50.00 per plate not worth a loonie DESSERTS: Lemon Mint Crème Brûlée. 5 star Cherry Compost Crumble .5 star AMBIENCE: Table overlooking St. John s Harbour 5 star Parking: Easy access right of the street
We enjoyed the view of the harbour. Service was great. I took the servers advice and ordered the salmon dinner. It did not disappoint. My husband was not so lucky. He ordered the (pan fried?) cod. Cooked well but very bland on a mountain of dried out bland veg and rice. He barely got through the fish and left everything else on the plate. Looked as bad as it tasted. And no one asked how the meal was. He would have told them. At least one of us left happy.
Great atmosphere, terrific food and our Server Monica was absolutely fantastic.
I ordered scallops and I told the the lady that helped us nothing spicy, no pepper or peppers for my sensitive stomach and I tried my dish two times, always was the same really spicy, the lady was grumpy and it was really bad experience and she didnt pass me water, she was so rude with me ans my husband too.
Do not waste your time or money on this place. We had a 7pm res. Party of 8. It took 45 minutes to get water and drinks and have our order taken, another 45 minutes to get apps. After waiting 2 hours and 15 minutes, we were informed that they were out of lamb...2 people had ordered. It is not our job as guests of this restaurant to keep inventory on their products. The overall experience was below sub par. The apps were mediocre we tried the soup, the Mussels, and the Brie with extra bread ( that wasnt delivered until the apps were almost finished). There may have been a total of 10 tables seated within the entire restaurant that probably could accommodate 30-35 ... I would hate to see how they operated (or failed) at full capacity. We were left at 930pm on a Friday night with nowhere to take my family for my fathers 81st birthday. I am horribly disappointed with the entire experience and would highly recommend NEVER walking through their doors. Poor management, poor service and a huge waste of time.
Service was great, food was too, and the Vu was nice!
This restaurant has the best cod tongue I ate; especially pairing with the special sauce.
I would never go through the door again, and would never recommend this restaurant to anyone. It s the worst meal my family and I have ever had in St. John s, and my family was really upset because we spent a couple hundreds of dollars. Everyone s meals at the table were disgusting, and the server never did a table/quality check for over 30 minutes after our food delivery. There are dirty little spray bottles of vinegar touching the food that everyone s hands have been on and not wiped properly - a huge health code violation. The head older waitress was incredibly rude to both my aunt and father for absolutely no reason. The star of the night was the fellow attending to the car park, he s very kind and attentive to his job and the guests. And for reference a family member at our table has been a loyal patron here for years and was shocked.
Two dines, one review. Dine one: Seafood Chowder, flavorful and delicious; Roasted Brussel Caesar, unique and delectable. Dine two: Herb Crusted NL Cod, bland (Cod was bland, rice pilaf was bland, and carrots were bland). Service excellent on both occasions. Atmosphere, less than exciting.
Great atmosphere, wonderful food, and view!
We tried the Jiggs dinner appy and it was delicious!
I wanted a special view overlooking the harbour and it did not disappoint. We had incredible service and delicious food for our special occasion. The staff in the kitchen and front end were all attentive to details and delivered a memorable night for us both. Thanks to head chef Lacey and her team for exceptional service and a wonderful dinner.
This was our first meal at Vu Resto. While we enjoyed the atmosphere and view, we felt it was overpriced for quality and quantity of food we ordered. Our family was disappointed.
Amazing place for quality food and very good accommodation accessible. Love it. Will do it again in the near future. Parking: Good location next to the restaurant building. Wheelchair accessibility: Its definitely fully wheelchair accessible.
Had our annual work Christmas party here again this year. It is always a great time. They really took care of us, and the food was simply awesome! They also make a very tasty old fashioned!
Disappointed. Room was cold. Seats at tables uncomfortable. (Werent in a booth). Appetizer (scallops) was very tasty but just lukewarm. Main courses were not great. Beef tenderloin was tender but tasteless, side was burnt (potatoes), it should never have been put on the plate and served. They offered to bring another side when waitress saw black bottom! Lamb was good but risotto was another disaster. Not caramelized at all but very soggy. Couldnt eat it. Desserts were ok. Problems in the kitchen? Wont be back soon.
I wish we would have been informed when we book reservations that it was going to be a special New Years Eve menu. We arrived and saw that the menu wasnt the same as the website and sadly they didnt have anything on there that my husband was able to eat. I would have given this review less stars if it wasnt for the waitress who was very nice and understanding and apologetic. I get that fancy restaurants may do this during New Years and maybe we should have assumed but I think it would have been best if we were informed. We had to leave. Hopefully next time it works out.
Delicious food, excellent service, beautiful location.
Fantastic staff, great food and of course as stated a gorgeous view to enjoy ! Highly recommend
Love the view of St Johns Harbour. Staff are very good as is the food. This is our new go to spot in Town.
Highly recommend!! The views were fantastic, the atmosphere was welcoming and the food was delicious! I had the jiggs dinner croquettes for an appetizer, which were better than I could have imagined. As a main I had the maple mustard salmon, cooked to perfection and the flavors of pickled apple, root veggies, sweet potatoe puree complimented the salmon beautifully. My husband had the French onion soup as an appetizer and as good as it was it is definitely not French onion soup. It was a red wine, beef based broth with caramelized onions with 2 or 3 croutons, it was totally missing the blanket of cheese that French onion soup is known for. For his main he had the smoked pork chop, this takes about 45 mins to cook but totally worth it. Garlic mashed potatoes were a great side to accompany the smoky pork chop. All in all it was a great dinner out and we will return! Also there is an actual parking lot for the restaurant so need to worry about finding parking on the street which sometimes can be a pain in the downtown section.
Amazing location with a great view of harbour, experienced staff, food was great BUT here comes the messy part, the prices are out of touch with reality, as seasoned traveller, frequently eat out the menu is great but pricing is punitive . If you want some of the more desirable items you will pay, although I thoroughly enjoyed the room, service and food I would not go back because of the excessive price
The restaurant is very pretty. Beautiful view and decoration. The staff was friendly. The food was bland, my steak was cold, unsalted and unflavourful. The veggies tasted burnt, even though they werent. Honestly feels like a huge waste of money. Would not recommend.
Rude and slow service. Wait 30 minutes :would you like more drinks? Wait 1 hour: get appetizer, Wait another hour: get your meal. Ask why the service was so slow get personally blamed for ordering something on the menu.
Great food , very attentive staff , affordable pricing , really enjoyed the meal . Its a great place to go if your looking for a treat .
Had fish and chips. Service was great. Drinks were amazing. Food was close to great. Fish wasnt as crisp as I had hoped, but Vinegar was in a spray bottle. Overall would recommend for sure.
Good service and great food.
Absolutely the worst experience I have ever had in a dining restaurant. Three hour wait, and I didnt get my food. They gave it to the other person at my table. Then they suggested I eat it anyway. Sure, pay $50.00 for a meal someone else was eating. Food was all cold, had no taste. My sons lamb was as tough as a leather boot, had to be ripped from the bone. To make matters worse, it was my sons girlfriend birthday. So in closing, I had to walk around the restaurant to get more drinks. Waiter disappeared for at Least 40 mins, I had to ask another server. Food was cold. I didnt get any food. Just a horrible horrible experience. I certainly would NEVER recommend this restaurant.
All around good atmosphere, however it is a little confusing when you enter (you need to go all the way in and up a flight of stair), you kind of feel like you walked in the back door of the restaurant.
The food was spectacular. I ordered the salmon, and was impressed with the different blend of flavors on the plate-especially the sweet potato puree with roasted vegetables. The rest of my party enjoyed their dishes as well-steak cooked to perfection, and a delicious pasta. Hats off to the chef and his team for an outstanding experience! The servers were attentive, friendly, and professional as well, a credit to this establishment. The pace of the evening was more relaxed, with one course not immediately served on the heels of another but, as we were celebrating an important milestone, I appreciated not being rushed through our meal. If you want something on the fly, I would choose another restaurant. For those special occasions, though, the Vu provided us with an excellent venue.
Ok so we went back to vu after we had our bad experience and it was 10 times better. They were timely with food and drinks and our server Janet was amazing. Owner Barry did exactly what he said he would do and give us a proper vu experience. Wings are some of the best Ive had in the city. And the carrot cake was just awesome. Definitely would go again. Glad we gave it a second chance
Very good. They deserve 5 start for food and drink quality. Update:The girl at the front door was actually so rude you can tell she didnt want to be there. Dont try and spark a conversation while your waiting for a cab. She will bite your head off.
Disappointed! It used to be a favourite. I did not know that it had changed to Pub dining. I was expecting fine dining and found it was a pub experience at fine dining prices. Halibut as a special was priced at $42 and looked like it may have been cooked in the microwave. Also, it was so cold there we had to put in our coats. It was to be a special treat for a friend s 70th birthday.
Visited Friday, May 20, 615pm to 9pm. This has been the best experience weve had so far at a restaurant. Absolutely nothing bad to say about this place at all, the atmosphere, the staff, the view and the food were all excellent. We came a little early but the staff accommodated us with a table until ours became available. We started with the Jiggs Croquettes as an appetizer and she ordered a Vu Breeze and I ordered a pineapple margarita. The drinks were mixed perfectly, packed a great punch but not overbearing. The croquettes were much better than even expected. They sat atop peas pudding and had mustard pickles and homemade pickled beet. She doesnt like beets much but enjoyed it with this. After we enjoyed our drinks and the Croquettes, we were moved to our table and the view was amazing, the 2nd floor overlooking St. Johns harbor and it was a beautiful Friday evening with several boats leaving the harbor. It really set the mood. I then persuaded her to try scallops for the first time, so we ordered the pan roasted sea scallops and the were not disappointing. I may have preferred them to be cooked a little more firmer, but they were fresh and clean, she actually enjoyed them and would try them again. The scallops had a delicious blueberry gastrique, crispy shallots, and bacon and onion jam. Everything just went together so well. Would recommend even if you dont like scallops. We then ordered our mains she ordered the Buffalo Honey Chicken Sandwich and I ordered the Pan Seared AAA Beef Tenderloin. Ive always found most Buffalo and honey chicken sandwiches to be lacking with the sweet and the heat just takes over, but they balanced it well and from the bite i had, its probably my favorite of all the spicy and honey chicken sandwiches Ive ever tried. The side was truffle parmesan fries which were also good and better than the time we had them at Moxies. I ordered my tenderloin rare and it was cooked immaculately. The bone marrow and horseradish butter and demi-glace pushed this steak above and beyond. Fried asparagus was good but could have used a little boost, I fry mine and finish with parmesan cheese. The side was supposed to be parmesan and roasted garlic duchess potatoes, but they just had the same truffle parmesan fries. If I had my time back, I would have asked them to replace it with the Crispy Duck Fat Potatoes, I just prefer not having fries with steak if I can help it. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my meal. At the end, she ordered a piece of their white chocolate and orange cheesecake. It came with a blueberry coulis, blueberries and raspberries. It was cooked perfectly and the flavors were good, the orange wasnt overpowering to the white chocolate and was quite light. I commend the staff too, they were friendly and chatted with us. One of the waitresses was talking to us asking us what we thought of the food and was just very friendly. Our waitress was amazing and attentive, and I loved that they left water at our table to pour ourselves. I would highly recommend Vu to everyone, no real complaints at all, we cannot wait to revisit and try some of their other offerings.
We visited Newfoundland from Nova Scotia and found the The Vu restaurant Fantastic. It was so great we had lunch twice here. Valere, our server was fantastic and the food amazing. The prices are reasonable for the quality of the food. The scenic view of the harbour is a great bonus. Highly recommend this resteraunt.
Super meal!! Topping off a very lovely day. High recommend the salmon dish.
Absolutely without a doubt do not miss out on the dining experience at this hidden gem of a restaurant. The decor is lovely...the menu satisfying to every food preference. The service welcoming and warm and to top it off the food is phenomenal!!
Although obscured by fog when we were there, celebrating a 90th birthday was provided a strong boost by the excellent view of the harbour and the excellent menu. Well done.
Excellent view of the harbor. The staff were very friendly.
Visited for my grandparents 50th anniversary with a group. The staff was inviting, the atmosphere is beautiful and the food was amazing! Extensive drink and food menu and the service was absolutely perfect.
Just short of 2 hours from being seated to receiving our main dishes. $15 for glass of wine. Food was pricey but delicious with good presentation on heated plates. Servers were great just need kitchen more on the ball.
I had 2 meals here . The first was excellent, the salmon was excellent. Then came Fathers day we waited 1 hour for food and we only ordered a main dish. Yes it was busier but our waitress hardly bothered with us. Never checked on us or offered a second drink and just gave an excuse for the wait. I did watch other staff who did take care of customers. Also its rather cool . So there we sat cold and ignored
I ate here twice while in St John s for a brief stay. The food and service was excellent and the setting very comfortable. I will definitely return!
We had our wedding reception at Vu and it couldn t have gone more perfect. Our waitress, Monica, ensured the entire experience was fantastic. Our guests raved about the food for weeks. Thank you so much Vu team!!
The concierge Mike at the Delta hotel made a reservation for our group of 12 and we are so glad for his recommendation. First impressions were great - extremely friendly parking lot attendant and host. The view from this restaurant is absolutely stunning. We were delighted with the flavour of each dish from the salmon, tenderloin, halibut to the Brussels sprout salad and truffle fries we were impressed with the different blend of flavours! Service was top notch knowledgeable, attentive and efficient. Would highly recommend this restaurant.
The salmon and scallops are top notch
We booked a table for 5 on a reccomendation from a local. Not being from St. Johns and looking for some Newfoundland cuisine we were very excited about going. The view was spectacular but unfortunately that was all that was. The service was not up.to par at all. The server was rushed and we all felt as if we were an inconvenience. We waited 3 hrs from being seared to receiving out main course and the food was not good. When we mentioned the wait the server was quick to blame a person at our table for being on the phone for 3 seconds. We had to flag another server down to get more drinks. It was expensive for the disappointment.
Very limited menu & vague with respect to details. Found the prices ridiculously high.
Our dining experience at Vu was nothing but exceptional. I loved the modern atmosphere, vibe and view. The staff was amazing and friendly and made you feel at home. The best part the food . There were 6 in our group and we all had many things off the menu cod , lamb , pasta , tuna , roasted Brussel sprouts , croquettes, and quinoa salad . Everything was delicious!!! I highly recommend this restaurant if you re looking for a wonderful evening! Thank you so much to Chris , Barry and staff.
One word for this place: delicious. This was the first place we ate at in St. Johns when we visited and we were super impressed. It came recommended by a local friend. The food was excellent and you really cant beat the view - gorgeous. I had the Lobster pasta and my partner had the cod. We also had a couple of drinks and finished things off with the peanut butter cheesecake. Would definitely return! Parking: Lots of parking
10/10 friendly staff and very very nice food. If you ve only 1 night in Newfoundland and are looking for a place to eat dinner, I d recommend booking a table here
The food is really good but not great, youre paying for the view. The service lets the place down, while the servers are friendly and there is alot to watch out of the windows it was over an hour between ordering and receiving any food at all. Parking: Easy parking right by the restaurant
Service is good and food is alright but both times it was been over an hour and a half for the food to come out. the menu lacked any vegetarian options.
Very friendly and helpful staff. I ordered 2 fish and chips to go. Very fresh and light batter on the Cod was great.
Very slow service and the food was disappointing - the batter on the fish was doughy and undercooked. The view of the harbour was nice.
Its worth its price.
Ive eaten here several times and the food is nothing short of spectacular. The last time we visited however I sat with my coat on and had my husbands coat wrapped around my legs. We ordered a bottle of wine and emptied it before the main course arrived....yes, we waited that long. When our tenderloins arrived they were just warm. The waitress replied with a dismissive well it just came out of the oven but she could clearly see that the butter atop the steak was solid and not melted. She offered to take it back to the kitchen to be reheated but I declined. Theres nothing worse to be waiting on food while the rest of your party is eating. I noticed a table of ladies adjacent to ours also sent back their lamb to be reheated. Perfection is implied in the price of the food....I dont think thats too much to ask for a bill encroaching on $300.
absolutely fantastic
Really nice atmosphere and view of the harbour, Signal Hill and narrows! Great service. My wife and I shared the Cast Iron Baked Brie which was delicious! She also ordered the Maple and Mustard Seed Glazed Salmon, which she really enjoyed. I on the other hand ordered a 12 Oz Marinated (couldnt tell it was) Tenderloin steak with Mashed potatoes, Caramelized onions with Broccolini. The steak wasnt seasoned, it had no sear and the fat on its side wasnt rendered: it tasted bland - as if you were in a hurry to fry a steak at home just to eat something quick. The caramelized onion was mixed into an enormous amount of mashed potatoe (I thought that the onions would be with the steak) Anyways, the potatoes were watery but flavourful. Its not a cheap restaurant, but my meal felt like truck-stop fare. My wife was enjoying the food and experience, so I didnt make a fuss.. Just dont order their steaks and expect even a steak house quality steak.
Lovely restaurant with a good view of the harbour. The staff are extremely nice and welcoming with great service. The menu is not too big and not too small, with good choices. The drinks menu is good with a very good wine list. I arrived early at 17:25, just after it opened and there were people in the which did create a good atmosphere. I would recommend booking if on a weekend or a later sitting. If you re in St Johns then I would recommend to dine here.
Two hour wait for meal. Had cod, very small piece and overcooked, The rice was undercooked and had the consistency of wet cement. The carrots were raw. Another in our party had salmon and it was served cold. Terrible dining experience, won t be back. Taken for a ride! Parking: Acceptable
Save your money, bite size portions of food for an insane amount of $ and also sides should automatically come with your main dish not buy it separately
My son and I recently lost someone we loved dearly, a father and a husband. Putting all the sadness of this time aside and to put a spin on a happier note , we wanted to celebrate another person dear to us and who has helped in this difficult time my sister, who has so deserving about to begin a new chapter in her life with a new job. We decided to take her out for supper to celebrate . Our first time at The Vu was great and lived up to grave reviews. This time was no exception, from start to finish the service, atmosphere and the food was amazing. I am sorry I never ordered the steak, I kept asking my son for just another piece. All in all , thanks to Chris and all the staff who made our evening out enjoyable . Given these challenging times for an evening out, just to relax and unwind check out The Vu, its got what you are looking for. Hats off Chris!!
Nice brunch menu. Enjoyed the cream cheese stuffed french toast. Cozy atmosphere and of course the wonderful Vu.
Delicious well presented meals. Beatiful views and good service . I would have gone higher but they served jackson triggs wine as their half liter wine At the price and profit they should up that quality.
We had a wonderful dining experience. Husband is Celiac and the chef made accommodations for him. I had lamb stew and baked brie with apples. Stew broth was rich and flavourful. The brie was out of this world good. Husband had an avocado salad with 3 scallops. Espresso creme brie and Pavlova for dessert. The view was like dinner theatre. We watched a supply vessel take on new crew. We shall return!
It took 1hour and 52 minutes for them to serve the food. We sat there from 6:00 pm till 8 minutes to 8:00 pm before the food finally arrived. I was one of the unlucky ones - I didnt get the food at all, the server told me that my food was burnt and she had sent it back and if I wanted just the fries. When I finally good my food it was still burnt and doused in buffalo sauce , so much so that it was sickenening. The fries were overloaded with salt. Would not recommend this restaurant even to my worst enemy .
Excellent service, quality and quantity of the food and a fabulous vuew!
Good. Food was pretty good but not fabulous. Atmosphere and service were really good. Prices a little high.
Excellent food,service and view
Excellent service and food. Highly recommend.
Our new favourite place to eat. Creative and delicious dishes and great service
Good quality of food, nice view and great service. Wings was so good with the blue cheese on top and the burger was delicious but not the best burger I had in St johns. Worth to try.
Food was excellent as well as the service. The views are incredible.
Best meal weve had in St Johns. Everything was fresh and properly prepared. The wings were especially excellent.
Amazing view with amazing food. Really nice way to start the day
Stopped in for lunch with my husband today and was so happy to have found this gem of a restaurant. Owner was.very pleasant ,staff were exceptional and the food was delicious. I had the chicken wings and tomato parm soup...oh my gosh..soooo tasty. My husband loved the fish and chips and was blown away by the delicate batter. If your looking for a great view and outstanding service and food this is your place to go.
Nice view, great food.
It was an excellent experience, highly recommend, food was fantastic, and service even better!! Val is the best!!
Our first time. The Vue was wonderful. We were able to get a window seat. We had appetizers for dinner and a lovely dinner. Service was professional and friendly.
Great view, great fig & bree cheese dish!
Great meal! The scallops with caramelized onions and beet sauce were scrumptious and the main of half rack of lamb with three cheese risotto and veg medley was equally delicious! The lamb was perfectly cooked, the risotto creamy and flavorful and the veggies firm and seasoned so well! Definitely recommend! Service was great too! And the view of the Harbour on a clear night was a lovely setting.
No soup for you!!! After a recommendation from a cabbie we looked forward to an awesome meal at Vu. Well, getting food apparently is a problem for this restaurant and in the end us, the unhappy consumer. Two couples ordered 3 appetizers and soup each. After one hour we received our first appy - some very yummy cod bites and home made tarter. Being promised the next plate in 3 minutes several times at 1.5 hours we still did not receive any more of our order while every table around us were either eating dessert or settling their bill. We decided maybe Subway was a better option or one of the many pubs around the area and paid our $16 bill - overpriced yes but still expected in a mid-level busy restaurant. The server said she had argued with the kitchen several times to no avail. The restaurant could have at leases compted our cod bites. Do not recommend if you are hungry and actually want to eat.
Super disappointed. We couldn t even order. Went to voicemail. Do not recommend if you are staying at the Marriott Courtyard in St. John s.
Great view, excellent, friendly service. Interesting and delicious food options.
I had the chicken salad. It was very tasty and filling. The service was good.
Amazing view of the Harbour. Disappointing restaurant otherwise.. We went there for brunch, only 5 tables with people. Service was slow, our drinks were always empty. Inconsistency with the drinks: some mimosa were very strong, while others were almost only orange juice. Same for the fruits salad, full bowls vs almost empty ones. My eggs benedict were overcooked. My friend got the pasta, asked without bacon, came with bacon.. Also a bit overpriced for what it is. Will unfortunately not go back for brunch.
Great view and awesome food.
The staff were very friendly! I had the steak and it was definitely the best Ive had in a long time. However, my partner had the fish and it not very good. It had absolutely no taste. The atmosphere felt a little bit dated (much more catered towards an older crowd), but nonetheless the decor and seating were top notch, as well as the view. Overall, a decent experience. The staff made it worth the visit:)
Delicious food. We went in the evening and it was a little dark but it did create a relaxing atmosphere.
Great place for birthday celebration. Professional and friendly staff
Service and food was great and you cant beat that Vu !!
The view is so good if you get a suitable place. The behavior of the staffs were good.
Lovely atmosphere and delicious meals.
Beautiful views, good food, service was a tad slow but they were busy and its hard to get staff so no big deal.
Amazing !
Everyone knows the fun of parking downtown, so the off street parking is great!
Food, Service and View were great.
The view, service and food were amazing! Truly enjoyed the experience!
Service is absolutely stellar, the atmosphere is a nice mix of fine dining and casual. We went for 2 meals within a month and the #1 dish I would recommend is the Korean wings. They are a MUST HAVE. The Cornish Hen was one of the best Ive tried as well. You cannot beat the views that this place has to offer and the prices are very reasonable as well. This place is must try!
Great service. Food was excellent and prices reasonable and fair. Adequate space between tables and low noise level. Would definitely go again and recommend to friends.
Excellent food and service. Nice view of waterfront.
Food was amazing, great atmosphere, and awesome setting
Great atmosphere, beautiful location, awesome service, good eats.
We did the contactless pickup and it was great - highly recommend the loaded poutine!
Ordered curbside pickup during the public health emergency. Process was flawless and our meals - burger and buffalo chicken burger - were top notch. Highly recommend!
We ordered the chicken and rib dinner for two. It was absolutely amazing best chicken I ever tasted !! Crubside pickup was quick and easy!! Definitely recommend
Nice restaurant with an excellent vue of the Port. Good food.
It was good. Not the kind of place you might go on a whim but the food is good and the service is fantastic
Food is excellent and so is the Vu
Great food, great service, wonderful ambience.
Very nice food was awesome... server Debbie was wonderful
Service was good. However, food was over-priced for what was served.
Amazing restaurant, so glad to see the old portobellos location have a nice new restaurant. Food was awesome amd left nothing to be desired. The vu was amazing as always with a view straight out the narrows. Will be back and will recommend
The harbour view is outstanding! Hence the two stars. I do not usually bother with negative reviews but this place was terrible! There were 4 of us and we ordered different dishes. Nobody was pleased with the meal or the service. I ordered a chefs choice meal - Very expensive grilled back ribs, served on a bed of beans and rice, and accompanied by a generous helping of delicious local NL mushrooms. What was served however, held no resemblance to the description. A half rack of ribs - cut and piled on a plate. Upon rearranging the ribs I found a great mound of rice underneath. No mushrooms or beans. I requested the server to please get the rest of the meal. She returned about 10 minutes later and said Haha, theyre all out of beans and mushrooms. That was the last I saw of any staff until the chack arrived. An unpleasant place with unprofessional staff. I cannot recommend it for anything but the view.
Squash soup was lovely.
Great atmosphere with an amazing view of the Ocean and harbor
Great food and service. View of downtown.
Great food, great service, great view. Well be back!
Great food and service
Great view and staff. Food is good but you are there for the view and the professionalism of the staff. Great pints of Day Boil!
A beautiful view of St. Johns harbour awaits you when the opportunity arises for you to spend time at VU. Our group shared a private room for the evening. Wait staff were exceptional! Food was delicious. As it was the season, Christmas decorations were lovely. Great job, we will be back. Dont miss your opportunity to try the VU!
I had the good fortune to spend a couple of hours with friends here on Saturday evening. It was a friends birthday and we had a private room booked for a meal. Everything about Vu was 5 stars!!! Food, delicious. Service, excellent. View (Vu), outstanding. If you havent been, you should go.
We visited tonight to celebrate and were extremely impressed. Service was great and food was amazing. Staff also great about allergies.
Fantastic food and drink with a fantastic view.
Vu has very good food with a nice atmosphere. Compared to other higher-end restaurants their portion sizes are much larger, it was a nice change to have good food and to leave feeling full. They also have excellent cocktails and desserts.
Great food and awesome view.
