Food was good. The two mouse running around the upstairs while the waiter shrugged it off and said oh we have traps set was not as good.

Food was amazing. Mussels app was great. Steaks were perfect.

Sushi is great!

We had the calamari, tuna tartare, and strip loin - everything was excellent! The drinks were great as well, highly recommend their strawberry martini!

Wow I m from out of town and I m here on a monthly basis, my typical go to restaurant WAS Basho, usually with a gaggle of clients in tow, bill commonly totalling well over $1000 each time. On this particular occasion 6:30 PM April 16, I was looking for a table for one, pretty simple request..be it at the bar, high top, or dining room I didn t care. The place was hardly bustling. The host advised me that he would have to consult the kitchen, 30 seconds later, I hear a blaring. NO !.. pretty surprised to be told that they could not accommodate one more person. Equally surprised he was a fact that the kitchen yelled loud enough for me to hear. Definitely did not feel welcome. Definitely will not be going back.

Amazing food and very accommodating staff. It s nice to see such a great variety of fish options in Newfoundland! The Chef s choice omakase is very nice.

My wife, and I absolutely love this place, but unfortunately I cant convince my wife to return for Valentines day. We were regular costumes, there almost twice a month. The only reason she wont go back is because of the costumer service she gets from the one waitress. Shes so unfriendly to her and only her. We went there with our family, and my wife told them just watch how she will treat her. The waitress didnt disappoint. Our family was amazed on how she treated my wife, and it was only her. She was treated like garbage by her, and spoke to her like she shouldnt be there. Its a shame that a waitress would treat you like shes better than you. We love this place, its such a shame Basho. Please do better with your costumer service.

Have been there several times and is always an awesome meal! The best restauraunt in St. Johns in my opinion!

First time there by high recommendation. Drinks and appetizers brought out approximately 1 hour after being seated. No offer if more required. Main dishes ordered at 650 pm. From there on for another hour apologies from our server for the delay because of issues with the large group downstairs. We remained calm and polite but after 2.5 hours with no food, no further drink orders and a very unapologetic and rude wait staff/management, we regretfully left the restaurant without our food or an apology from the staff. The management were not only unapologetic but also very rude to us after waiting 2.5 hours with no main meal. We will not be revisiting. Oh yeah forgot to mention its my wifes 65th birthday. A birthday to remember!!

The server made many mistakes with our order(s) and we feel he was not sincere in his apologies- almost argumentative

Our recent dining experience at Basho this past Saturday was extremely disappointing. From the moment we arrived, we encountered rude and unprofessional behavior from the hostess. Despite arriving a little early, we were met with eye-rolling and a dismissive attitude. We decided to go elsewhere for a drink and returned at our reservation time. Upon our return, we were seated downstairs by a friendlier hostess. However, shortly after, the initial hostess asked us to move upstairs as she claimed she couldnt handle the situation, even though the restaurant was not busy. The seating upstairs was uncomfortable, with high chairs that didnt contribute to a romantic atmosphere. Although we enjoyed the appetizers and drinks, we were informed that both of the main dishes we wanted were unavailable. This lack of communication was frustrating. Additionally, we noticed sushi sitting out on the bar for an extended period, which was concerning. By this point, our patience was wearing thin, and my back was bothering me. We requested to move to a different table, which was accommodated. However, the overall experience had already affected our appetite. The sirloin steak I ordered turned out to be more like a roast beef dinner, and it was not enjoyable. The final straw was the hefty bill of over $200 for a subpar experience. To make matters worse, when we received the bill, we noticed that we were mistakenly charged for an item we didnt order. We promptly paid and left the restaurant. Thankfully, we were able to salvage our evening by visiting other bars in the area and had a more enjoyable time. Overall, our experience at Basho was extremely disappointing. The lack of professionalism, unavailability of menu items, uncomfortable seating, and subpar food left us with a negative impression. We would not recommend dining at Basho based on our experience.

First off, the service was awesome. The Strawberry Margarita was the best drink I ever had and the complimentary appetizer was a nice touch. The downside was the sushi. It wasnt worth the price because the nigiri didnt taste fresh, and the sushi rolls were only OK. Another downfall of this place is how hot it was. They dont appear to have AC. Regardless, I would still go back and have some drinks and appetizers. It is a nice place to eat with friends.

An entirely underwhelming and disappointing experience. The food was subpar- the tuna tartare was served with an unnecessary bland avocado spread, and the sushi was mediocre at best. To make matters worse, the hostess was dismissive when it came to our reservation and made a point of emphasising that our table would have to be given up in two hours. The top floor was empty during our meal, and our cocktails and appetizers took 35+ minutes to arrive. Not faulting our poor server who tried their best, but they didnt even know what the difference between a mojito and martini was when asked by a member of the party. A clear lack of training, even when it came down to ensuring cutlery was available. Would strongly suggest going elsewhere and saving yourself the trouble.

Went there for our anniversary supper. We waited 1.5hrs for our food. We were ignored the whole time by the waitress and given a complimentary dessert for the wait. For $150 and over 2 hrs it was the worst dining experience ever. If someone waits that long they want a refund not a slice of goat cheesecake.

Some one tell the staff not to pull out the wash bucket when customers are still at their table. Food was overly flavoured, so much that you could not distinguish what you were eating. Staff Were always in a hurry. If you can t accommodate a late seating don t take the reservation

Amazing steak and Sushi

How can I put it, it is not very authentic Japanese food, but it meets my requirements. The rice of sushi is less and more meat. It is more like sashimi and warms the stomach than sashimi. The presentation is more beautiful than Japanese food, and the combination is really good and beautiful. Its a problem that you cant tell the difference between the main dish and the salad. Its a joke. The environment of this store is very good and the waiters are very friendly. --- Five years later, I would like to add that I have eaten in restaurants from many countries, and I can t remember many of them, including many restaurants in Japan that I have forgotten, but this restaurant has always been in my memory. I wish you happiness!

A horrid 3.25hr experience! Waited over two hrs for main course, had to go ask for it as every other table had been served, even dessert! Apologies were offered and expedited entrees were to arrive in 10mins. Over 15mins later they arrived, one steak was cooked wrong, med well vs med rare, and fries were luke warm at best, and salad was over dressed in olive oil. Fresh fries were offered when halfway through meal, but we declined. Took about 30 mins for our plates to be cleared and dessert menu offered. Ordered black coffee, fresh pot had to be brewed, coffee was half consumed before frozen dessert arrived. Maybe petty to mention but coffee cup was barely 3/4 full, black coffee was ordered so nothing was to be added. Very disappointed in a much anticipated meal. Way below standards that we are accustomed to at this restaurant. Service staff wrongly blamed it on new kitchen staff, service staff should have noticed that first customers in were being last to be served. Service staff shouldnt take almost 30mins to clear dinner plates. Atmosphere in the restaurant was loud, and not relaxed. Once again service staff were partially responsible. Only redeeming aspect was the drink I ordered was tasty and efficiently served. The solution offered was a 30% discount, or additional round of drinks ( we didnt want)or free dessert (we were undecided if we would order at all) so we went with 30% discount.

I had this Dry Aged Strip Loin and it was by far one of the best steaks Ive had in a LONG time. The server was Great, she was friendly had a help picking out drink for me and all my friends.

Our dinner at Basho was a mixed experience. Firstly, while the server was nice, she was very clearly under the influence of either drugs or alcohol. This affected her ability to clearly communicate and to provide a positive experience. Secondly, I found my drink, and the drinks I saw around other tables to be childish in both taste and presentation. For a restaurant with such delicious and refined food, I believe they are doing themselves a large disservice with their drink offerings. They should take a look at Number 4s offerings just up from them for inspiration and an example of what could be expected of a restaurant at that price point. In my opinion their drinks were worse than those offered at a club like Konfusion or Dusk. As stated above though, all the food here was exceptional! As a note, I would appreciate it if the restaurant provided real menus to their customers, it ruins the atmosphere when everyone is browsing on their phones through the menu.

The place is awesome. The duck was phenomenal. Been here a few times the menu doesnt change much but also doesnt disappoint. Their food is plated well with good portions and flavor combinations. Of all the restraunts in downtown St. Johns this is my personal favorite

I had to leave as the hostess was pretty much a racist , She was trying to seat me in an absolutely unacceptable place. Dumb stupid arrogant person .

I wish I could give more stars for the food we did have but the service my girlfriend and I got was poor, unwelcoming and overall had a server projecting her bad night on us. If you are looking to go to Basho, may be worth rethinking and picking one of the other fantastic restaurants in downtown St. Johns that values their guests. Trying to get get a reservation to begin with was difficult and shouldve been my first sign to try somewhere else but went along with it and 6+ calls and leaving a message that wasnt answered, we got a reservation for 8pm. Walking into the restaurant it started off with a pretty short conversation with a woman who ended up being our server that evening. I dont know if she was having a bad night but we got the brunt of it as she was anything but welcoming and her attitude made it clear she was not happy to see us. We got drinks which were fine, ordered the scallops, striploin and the Toby Plate. We were then told they were completely out of Sushi/sashimi to then have the table next to us, who were sat and ordered after us have what I can only assume was the Toby plate (a large chefs plate of sushi/sashimi/nigiri) show up at their table 45 minutes later. Interesting. Halfway through the steak we decided to try and order another main course as we were both still hungry, to which we were told the stoves are off and the kitchen is closed. The server then follows that up with you two are having some bad luck tonight.... not great. She offered us a dessert on the house which was nice but it took us getting clearly frustrated with the evening for her to remotely care and start to change her attitude. Judging by the lack of interaction with any of the previous reviews and no contact email, Id imagine this may fall on deaf ears. Both my girlfriend and I are in the service industry and understand off nights, but the lack of care and concern as though we were doing a disservice for simply coming in to dine was extremely frustrating and disappointing.

Fantastic dinner out! My partner s family is half Japanese, and even he was impressed! We had the scallops, spicy salmon roll, steak frites, and cod meal. Would definitely recommend each of them. The portions were generous, well seasoned, and creative. You may not think of Japanese cuisine for a vacation meal in Nfld, but Basho definitely is a standout!

Poor service. First time was great. But the subsequent two times were some of the worst service I ever had. The staff were inattentive and rude. I complained that I had been waiting 1h for the food and the server went to check and commented that the food was just sitting there -- and she served us that cold food. Honestly, not going there again unless they change practices.

Our first time at Basho was quite good! The food there is our new favorite in St. Johns. We built up an appetite before we arrived specifically because we were very hyped to try a variety of things. We had the tuna tartar, the spicy scallop roll, the Nobu scallop and asparagus dishes to start. Then, we had rack of lamb and the dry aged sirloin as mains. Each item was fantastic in their own way. Of the appetizers, Ill give a specific shout out to the Nobu scallop and asparagus dish - the sauce was incredible and the scallops perfectly cooked. For our mains, the steak was a perfect medium rare and the prosciutto sauce that it was topped with was an amazing addition. Truffle fries - what else is there to say about that? Lamb was also great, I was surprised that my favorite part of the lamb dish ended up bring the bed of ratatouille - it had such a unique flavor to it! In all, the food was fantastic. The only reason this rating is not a 5 star is because service was a bit slow. Admittedly, it was a very busy Victoria day weekend so I understand. We will be back for sure! Ill order only sushi next time because the one roll we ordered this time was so fantastic.

Food was delicious. The dessert did not disappoint. Only downfall is it was so cold inside. My spouse had to wear his jacket the entire meal.

Called basho for a reservation Friday evening and nothing was available. I was offered a call back for a cancellation which I happily accepted for 3 people. We did get a call for 7 and went. Had several appetizers, all delicious. Our main course was beef tenderloin, well done, rare and med rare. Our steaks came and my sister were given wrong steak because the bartender was providing server responsibility and could not see what was what in the lightening. The unfortunate part is my sister had no fork to eat her meal until I had mine finished to give her my fork, it was at this time it was realized it was a well done steak instead of the rare. My other sister who thought she wanted well done found out she loved rare. We did not see our bartender server for the entire main meal. Had to leave table and go downstairs to ask for our bill. Also , wine was requested but not delivered. I just thought, I need to check my bill to see if I was charged for it. Not happy with service and disappointed I cancelled the reservation with magnum and stein to accept basho cancellation. Poor service for $300!

Basho used to be one of my places in town, and I was so excited to return there after they reopened. Although the sushi was still delicious, authentic, and just as I remembered, the service really needs work and soured our entire experience. We originally made a reservation for 2, and called a couple days prior to change it to 4. We spoke with a hostess who managed to make it work - we did not just leave a message and show up assuming it would work out, but had verbal confirmation. When we showed up, they insisted it was only for 2 people and that we were lying, must have just left a message, and didn t actually speak with anyone. There were two people out front and both kept making rude remarks to each other about how awful it was for us to just show up. They then figured out that the reservation was changed to 4 people but one of them hadn t marked it down. Service was very slow and not very warm or attentive. They didn t seem to care about us or anyone else there, and it truly felt like everyone hated their job. The food took forever - at least when it finally came out, our sushi was good but another friend got a steak and it was subpar. At the end, they made a mistake with the bills (2 for the table) and put the wrong items on it. That would normally be forgivable if it wasn t for the fact that the experience was poor from beginning to end. I can only recommend Basho for its sushi - it s still delicious and probably the only reason they are still running. The reservation system needs to be modernized (online booking, multiple phone lines, not using a paper and pen book which is prone to error and issues), the service could be better, and in general they shouldn t hire anyone who will make rude or snarky remarks in front of their patrons.

I went with my boyfriend and we had a fantastic time. The food was phenomenal and the atmosphere was amazing. It was one of the best experiences we ever had and we will definitely be going back again !

Started with Proscuitto and Melon roll with Parmegiano, Balsamico and Basil Infusion. It was very delicious. Small portion as expected with this price point. High quality and tasty. But when ordering the rack of lamb, it didnt come as described. The menu said Panko Crusted Half Rack of Lamb with Aka Miso and Fennel Pancetta Rattatouille with Braised Lamb Shank. There was no panko on anything and it was basically a lamb shank with a side of pulled lamb & green beans. The beans were cold unfortunately. The pulled lamb was rather bland. Did not appear to even have pancetta meat at all. Keeping a 4-star review in case Im just uncultured and missing the point of this dish. However, the Seasonal Nigiri and Sushi roll assortment was out of this world. It was a beautiful assortment of handmade sushi . All was delicious. Included salty soya sauce, strips of ginger, and a spicy wasabi with lots of flavour. Would have liked if cocktails had prices listed on menu. Service was lacking slightly, but they had a large table simultaneously so I can understand they were busy. Would highly recommend for seafood dishes.

If you dont try the striploin or the spicy scallop rolls you might be making a mistake. Also, the ginger and mango ice cream flavours are incredible.

Fantastic! Delicious from start to finish. Our first time here but will return. Service was exceptional Attentive, prompt, friendly and knowledgeable. Scallops 3 ways was a party for the taste buds. The tenderloin with portobello- amazing. Husband had the strip loin and he is very picky - he loved it. Highly recommend.

Heard lots of amazing reviews about this place so we gave it a shot. Making a reservation was difficult. Couldnt do it online; had to call. Called several times and ended up leaving a voicemail. Heard back a few days later to confirm. They should have online booking or at least answer the phone. There were no physical menus on the table. Just a haphazardly cut piece of paper to scan with your phone and read the menu online. I get it, covid. But other restaurants are putting in the effort to clean menus between patrons. It just seems a bit lazy, and the last thing you want to do at your restaurant is to force couples to stare mindlessly into their phones more than they already are. The service was very pleasant and attentive. We sat upstairs where we found the atmosphere to be pretty dull and unimpressive. Some nice artwork around but overall not particularly welcoming. A great view of the harbour from some tables. A loud buzzer would sound every now and again that was a communication line between the upstairs bar/sushi station and the downstairs kitchen. Bit of a mood killer in a fine dining experience. The cocktails we had were great, but the food was not memorable. Weve had as good, or better, sushi at other, more affordable places in town. The steak was good. Seasoned well and cooked to a nice rare. But again nothing particularly memorable. The truffle oil fries that came with the steak were pretty greasy and didnt taste of truffle. The dessert was quite enjoyable. If youre looking for a nice night out, I think there are better options at this price point.

Hands down one of the greatest places Ive eaten in St. Johns. The sushi was incredible, and the steak was seriously one of the best ever. It was an amazing night out.

Man does this place rule. Some of the best sushi youve ever had thrown next to one of the best steaks? Unreal. Ive had sushi all across the country and this place tops 99% of them and ties with two other places Ive been. Not to mention its so much more than your stereotypical Sushi joint. Here you get fine dining downstairs with menu choices for the whole famjam, while the upstairs can be an after work casual hang out with a selection of awesome mixed drinks, cocktails and local brews from quidi vidi on tap. Highly recommend their steaks, sushi and beef sashimi. Theres not a bad item on the menu though.

We love this place. We come to Newfoundland twice a year and typically eat at Basho twice a year. Wife and I consistently get Sushi as an app and meal. We have tried what others in our party gets and those bites have been tasty too. Mixed drinks are excellent though a tad weak. Go in knowing service is consistently slow - ask for refills early. Great place if you have expectations that it will be a log (and great) meal.

Oh my! I think this was the most amazing meal I had in St Johns! We shared three appetizers, all soooo good. Fresh seafood, sushi and some tempura (seafood and veggies... Who knew asparagus made great tempura?!). That would have been enough for a 5star rating but then the steak! Perfectly cooked, paired with a salad (lightly dressed with an amazing bright and light vinaigrette) and fries. Yum... Nope, Double Yum!

Reservation for 5 people was made 1 week ahead and on the day of reservation when I call to confirm the reservation I m being told there s no reservation? This is very sad. Basho you have failed me every year that I travel to Newfoundland. Past 3 years I ve been trying to get a reservation and this year I finally thought I had the reservation made. Bunch of liars.

Simply the best food you can eat in St. Johns! I go for the steak because nobody does it better. Love the truffle fries. The surf and turf appetizer is devine. I can spend a lot of time on the frozen feta cheesecake, it too is just delicious. I dont eat sushi but friends say theirs is the best. Cocktails are some of the best as well, with premium spirits and fresh ingredients. Love the ambiance here and the staff are always friendly and efficient.

Consistently one of the best places to eat in town. Recommended. Try the steak. Hickory stick fries were a hit too.

Appetizer was absolutely beautiful and delicious. The service was not what I expected for the price. The sushi she was really not on par with the price. The cocktail was good. The coffee was Not. The place looks beautiful and nice and warm.

Another glorious Basho experience last evening. This Japanese fusion mecca never fails to impress. Gloriously and meticulously crafted, prepared and presented, with exceptional balance, depth and breadth of flavour. Each dish, every dish, each time every time. The scallops three ways (see photo) should be on your bucket list. Enjoy them left to right to optimize the flavour and texture journey. My main course was a sweet and savoury, crispy skinned, sublimely cooked, Muscovy duck beast, accompanied by perfectly matching starch components and crispy delicious asparagus, together with a phemonal red wine soy reduction. Magnificent. My friends enjoyed, among other things, what they described as the most wonderful cod dish they have experienced in this city. No small feat indeed. Oh, and while I passed on it this time around, the Nobu inspired sashimi is truly extraordonary. All this, in a relaxed, laid back atmosphere, with decently attentive service, no pretentiousness, and lower prices than the experience warrants. Consistently awesome! Enjoy.

This was the best meal! Scallops and steak. I can t say enough about the service, the atmosphere, the food. From entrance to the check, great meal, great staff, great service. Everything was perfect. Highly recommend giving this resta a try when in St. John s. Very unlikely you will be disappointed.

Hands down the best restaurant in St. John s. If you like fine dining, go here. If you like steak, go here. If you like sushi and Japanese food, definitely go here. They do it all right, the atmosphere is superb and the drinks are phenomenal. Prices aren t cheap but generally what you d expect from fine dining in St. John s. This place is a go to for me!

First of all, I wish there was a 2.5 star so I could choose that instead of 3. This is one of those luxury restaurants, which you shouldnt expect anything luxury from it other than making a reservation in advance, waiting 45 minutes for your meal to be ready, and a sullen waitress. Without a reservation, first they politely asked us to leave, but then they obliged by giving us a sit without reservation, in almost an empty space where we thought will be full in a couple of minutes as all other tables should be fully booked. However, after being there for more than two hours, no one else showed up (we left just 10 minutes before the place closes). And the food; again, dont expect large portions, as this is a luxury place. The sushis my friends had were not the best in town. My steak was good, but I explicitly wanted it well-done, which was almost raw in the middle. Another friend ordered the lamb shank, but got three small lamb-rib instead in his plate. The price was almost high, but not surprising.

Pro: The best dish is easily the tuna tartar. Absolutely delicious. Con: The sushi rolls and Toby Platter was mediocre at best, and overpriced.

We came out to celebrate my mothers 84th birthday. Not only were they extremely accommodating in serving us downstairs when only the upstairs was open, the waitress was excellent, the rack of lamb exceptional and the birthday desert was provided on the house. They truly made my mothers birthday special. Thank you guys so much.

Honestly was a bit nervous when I sat down and saw the pixelated logo on the top of their menu, but after getting my food I was extremely pleased. The pleasantly small menu includes some unique dishes as well as some classics. All dishes were very well prepared, and absolutely delicious. I had the duck for my main, and the unique combination of flavours with the grapes was just incredible. Our server was friendly, if a bit stoic and soft spoken, and the atmosphere is very lounge-y and relaxed. Definitely recommend this place for a nice upscale dinner with some Japanese influence.

I just tell everyone they need to eat here. I always leave happy. Whenever I work in St. Johns, which is once a month, I have to have a visit.

One of the best sushi places in St. Johns. The sushi is made with a surprising amount of care, and the meat entrees looked great. The lounge is the better place to sit, so try to go up there. Large selection of alcohol, albeit a tad overpriced.

My girlfriends favourite restaurant, she loves sea food and in particular sushi, so she had the tuna tartar to start followed by salmon rolls with a martini and she loved it. I, on the other hand am not a big lover of sushi so I had the lamb and thought it was delicious! The service seemed good and for 2 alcoholic beverages, a starter and 2 main courses cost just over $100 which I was ok with considering it is a fine sushi restaurant. Would go back again for sure!

Great atmosphere, easily the citys most consistent restaurant (the place is incapable of serving a bad plate), best sushi in the province, and arguably the best steak in town (filet). A little on the slow side at times, but the wait always pays dividends in quality & flavour. Ive eaten everywhere in the city, but this has been hands down my favourite spot for years, and based on their very loyal customer base, Im guessing Im not alone in that opinion. A must try if you are visiting or just a local who has never been before.

One of the best places I have eaten at in St. Johns. I have only ordered one meal, the steak with truffle fries. A much better steak than The Keg in my opinion and those fries are delicious. Nice cocktails available with fresh ingredients. Not into sushi myself but I hear theres is quite good. A little on the pricey side but unlike other higher end restaurants in town you wont leave and want to stop by a burger joint to fill up. The portions are rather filling. Staff quite friendly as well. Highly recommended!! Enjoy!!!

Faaaaabulous. Great ambiance, great food and great variety. Looved the cocktail of the day and the specials are well worth it. Lounge and bar area looked soooo inviting...Ill give that part a try next time. Service a bit slow.

Never had a bad experience here. Best sushi in St. Johns by far. Other offerings also great. Nice wine list, lots of martinis (though Im not into that).

Best sushi in town hands down. Pricey but well worth it. I would recommend this place to anyone :) Seriously people, dont poorly rate restaurants because of one bad experience. This is a good place.

They actually had the unmitigated Gaul & audacity to stick the tip on the bill, never, repeat, never will I enter this establishment ever again!!!

Fantastic meal with great service! I saw that someone said that the tip was on the bill. I was in a party of two and this wasnt the case for us. It isnt unheard of for many restaurants to include that for larger parties. Highly recommend the steak and truffle fries!
