Mauna Sushi in Surrey

This is a small and busy sushi restaurant, with a steady stream of takeout orders. The service was fair, but they seemed to be handling a lot of Uber Eats orders when we arrived. Since we had time to spare, we waited a bit before placing our order to give them some breathing room. One highlight was their affordable deal a miso soup and three-item menu for around $16, which offers great value. The food quality was decent, and overall, it was a pleasant experience.

Good oshi for a fraction of what you would pay downtown. Service is good and the owners are really sweet.

We got take out using Ubers bogo. So glad we decided to try a new sushi place. So tasty!

First time to Mauna Sushi, who was recommended by Mijune. We had a couple dishes to try and I must say it was tasty and the fish was fresh. Definitely will be back. Service was great.

Edit to add more detail. For quite some time, Ive been ordering their special Explosion Roll. It is SOO delicious. I wad a little sad when they closed for renovations and I couldnt get my fix in. Today was their first day open again and you bet I went and got my explosion roll! Over the time they were closed, Ive tried many sushi rolls hoping to find something similar to my regular order to no luck. If you like tobiko, this is it, the roll to get! Everywhere else skimps on the tobiko, even when Ive paid extra to get more added to my orders. The inside of the restaurant looks even better now. Ordered my rolls to go for my dinner at work, even 3 hours later (in the fridge) it tasted so good and still so fresh! The staff are friendly and the food is always delicious. You can tell they take pride in their work.

They are so rude if you don t tip them for pick up. Dine in is one thing but a small pickup order shouldn t always require a tip. Sorry.

A HIDDEN GEM in Surrey that serves high-quality, very fresh, and reasonably priced sushi! Some of the best aburi, Im very impressed! Staff were also friendly! Make sure you try the Explosion Roll, Aburi Tart, and Aburi Hotate Oshi.

Great little hidden gem in north surrey! Food is delicious and a surprisingly generous quantity. Love that they have more options for aburi sushi and they have some unique dishes as well. Pictured below is: Explosion roll-large pieces and lots of tobiko and fresh. Chicken karaage- super yummy, crispy, and they have garlic mayo to dip Salmon and Ebi Aburi- delish Golden Cali roll- HUGE pieces and super crispy!

We went here on a Friday night, so it was a little busy for the dine in. The guys who makes all the food is very very friendly. We had to wait a bit for our food, but it was so so worth it. Everything we had (scallop cone, red seal roll, wild salmon oshi, green salad) was delicious. I would recommend to anyone. T

They have some excellent sushi here, with an impressive variety. All fried food items, namely the tempera, were very tasty, and their house special poke was delicious! I highly recommend trying out your go-to sushi at this place, its definitely worth the money :)

Came here because it was the best reviewed sushi in the area. We ordered a tempura udon, a sushi bento and an explosion roll. The roll was really good. It was covers with masago and was torched abori style. The tempura was also nicely fried. What was a little disappointing was the sushi bento box. It came in a small plastic take out container even though we dined in. The teriyaki chicken was about two spoonful of rice with two bites of chicken. Again the flavor was good and the skin was crispy. It would have been nicer if it came in a regular bento box and a slightly bigger portion of chicken teriyaki.

Amazing sushi. Must order the wild salmon oshi and unagi cone! We also tried the saba oshi and ebi oshi and also love.

I love this place! A little unassuming hole in the wall place that you don t know how good it is until you go. Not much to look at until the food is brought to the table, as it is very attractively arranged. My friends took me here a few months ago for my first time making. I thought the food was delicious and very reasonably priced. A very good selection on the menu. I ve been twice now. The owners/operators are friendly and kind. They make an effort to know your name. Now when I am out in North Surrey I am likely to suggest sushi for lunch or dinner and head to this restaurant. They seem to work very hard to make this small business be successful, offering really good food for really good value. I tell my friends. Just give it a try I feel confident that you ll be glad you did! (Oh, and I highly recommend the Red Seal Roll and the Hawaiian Roll!) Parking: This restaurant is in a strip mall that isn t ever too busy. Parking will never be a problem, I m sure. Kid-friendliness: I don t have children, but I ve seen others with young children (toddlers +) in the restaurant. No problem.

Great sushi at reasonable prices! Its one of the best Ive eaten in Metro Vancouver. The spot is small but comfy, with around 8 tables. They have only one sushi man/chef, which is excellent, as the owner will always prepare your sushi! Always with the same fantastic quality! I would definitely recommend the Tiger Roll... omg, Im still dreaming about it!

I came here based on the reviews and was pretty let down by the experience...it makes me wonder how useful reviews are in some cases. For anyone to give this place a good rating, it would have to be based on previous owners running this place or the reviewers simply not knowing what good sushi tastes like. The service was timely but not personable or friendly. The atmosphere was drab and a bit depressing. The agadashi tofu had a thicker batter, unlike the lighter thinner batter you would expect. Even after using the dilling sauce it literally had no flavour. The spicy tuna sushi offerings did not taste that fresh and the flavour was totally masked by the spicy sauce, nor did it look fresh. I wont detail other dishes but the experience was a shame. Needless to say I will not return here again.

Ive been going to Mauna Sushi ever since Sean (the new owner) took over from what used to be Sushi Zen. I was disappointed when the old owners sold but was delighted when I tried Seans sushi. He has had tremendous experience working in high end sushi restaurants in his past and has taken what he has learned and put it all together with his food at Mauna Sushi. Sean is very personable and trys to get to know his customers while being extremely consistent with the quality of sushi he makes. The only knock I could ever understand on him or Mauna sushi is at busy times you may have to wait a few minutes extra for food as he is the only chef making the sushi, having other staff assist with kitchen foods. While others could see this as a con, I would say its also a pro because he is very consistent with the sushi he produces. I have eaten at Mauna roughly 50-100 times and Ive never had my order messed up. Sean is very detailed in his work and double checks orders before sending them out. Aside from everything Ive mentioned previously, the taste of his sushi is above and beyond 99% of the other sushi places I have tried before. Some favourite things order from Mauna are the Wild Salmon Oshi, Spicy Salmon Roll, Spicy tuna Roll, Philadelphia Roll, and the salmon avocado roll. I highly recommend trying out Mauna Sushi!

Mauna Sushi is truly one of the best sushi places in the Lower Mainland. We have been getting sushi from Mauna Sushi almost every week for the past year. What makes them special is their consistency. Their sushi is always very fresh and delicious. If you are reading this and have not tried Mauna Sushi yet, you are missing out! Our favorite is the Wild Salmon Oshi, Dynamite Roll, and Mauna s Aburi Tart.

Quality and service is always consistent. Been here around 10 times and it has never disappointed. Definitely a hidden gem, you can taste the quality. i have friends from Burnaby that drive to Surrey just to eat here and that doesnt happen often. Cost is reasonable too. We are very lucky to have Mauna Sushi in our neighborhood!

Sushi was terrible. The chopsticks they gave us were so cheap, both pairs broke. The soy sauce they gave us was terrible and there wasnt nearly enough given for the amount of sushi we purchased. The Wasabi and ginger wasnt separated from the sushi. Im thoroughly disappointed and wont be coming back.

Heard so much about this place, so decided to check it out when we were in the area. A little bit out of the way, and not that much of a fancy setting, but the sashimi and sushi are awesome! The only complain would be the steep price vs portion + overall ambience.

As soon as you walk into Mauna Sushi you are greeted with a wonderful staff that makes going there a real pleasure. I decided to write a review because I really want everyone to know that Mauna Sushi makes the absolute best California Rolls I have ever eaten. I am at an age where I can say I have dined in many Japanese restaurants for many years in many different places from Vancouver to Surrey including some international spots and Mauna Sushi makes the best. I did not post any stars for atmosphere because I have only done take out.

Family couldnt decide what to order so we ordered their Party Tray D which consists of all their popular rolls and aburi. Super delicious!! We loved their salmon aburi and saba aburi the best. Pretty pricy, but worth it for the portion, quality, and freshness. Good balance of rice and fish. We ordered take out so service and atmosphere left unrated.

Oh this hidden gem!! It opened right after the pandemic started in Guildford area in Surrey, the yumminess just blew us away over and over again!! We LOVE their Aburi sushi, especially the party tray D. It might look a bit pricey if you haven t tried them before, but I personally think they taste as amazing as Miku. Btw they ve been open for dine in after months of take out only, you should really go for a try!!

Went here based on the Google Reviews, and oh boy was it ever worth it. I had the Spider Roll and a Salmon Avocado Roll, they were both incredible. I wish I lived closer so I could enjoy this more often. If you are looking for your new favorite Suahi place, then look no further...highly recommend this hidden gem.

I thought I would try this restaurant because of the positive reviews and order takeout. Unfortunately, the Sushi was undersized lacked taste and freshness. Also, there were no chopsticks provided. A small oversight but annoying when you have paid good money.

This is a hidden gem within Surrey and I am amazed by the quality of this food. I had a great meal with my wife tonight. We ordered the sashimi salad, it was very fresh and delicious and we ordered party tray C for Valentine s Day. The owner was the one making everything for us and he was working overtime! He did an amazing job making our party tray, the salmon Oshi was amazing and delicious and everything that followed was super high quality. This was our first time coming and it was well worth it. I would love for a loyalty card as I will be back again soon! What I love the most is that they ve been in business for 2 years now and they already worked their way up in Googles eyes! Working in the review business, I only came here because of their reviews. I m amazed at the quality of the food, the service they provide and the pricing on the food especially was amazing. To the owner and team, if you re reading this, we love your food and thank you for preparing it!You made my wife and I happy as we stayed there for almost two hours we will be loyal customers and regulars soon enough ! Fresh and delicious food

My new favorite sushi place, very clean, fast and friendly, tons of parking. Really some of the freshest sushi Ive had in surrey or downtown Vancouver even. So glad to find this amazing little place, sushi chef really creates a visually and delicious masterpiece.

Tried Muana for the first time today. Ordered our usual rolls as a baseline and wow, all of them were the best weve had in years. Ill definitely be spreading the word about this place. Just fantastic.

The sashimi portion was very small. I was surprised to see the size of each piece being half of the normal size of any other sushi place I have ever been to. Found a piece of bone on one of the sashimi pieces. Very disappointed.

Ive ordered take-out from Mauna Sushi a number of times. The pressed Sushi is outstanding, i havent found a better place for Oshi Sushi in Surrey. Party Tray D as others have suggested is my go to. My new favorite Sushi spot in Guildford area, and probably ranks near the top in Surrey.

Not usually writing Google reviews but had to chime in when I read some of the negative comments. Ive been here 6 times and the quality of the food is much superior to a regular sushi restaurant. For those who complain that the pieces of sashimi or nigiri are too small, please go try more authentic and properly prepared sushi. Just by being bigger in size doesnt mean it is better. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but please, be educated in your comments before you trash a place.

Unfortunately the service wasn t very good this time. We do normally like this place, as the sushi rolls are good. My husband and I had the sushi bentos and the rice was dried out, tempura was soggy. We also ordered two spicy tuna rolls. They forgot about them, and had to be reminded. The rolls came once we had already finished eating. We did get an apology from the owner, however offering a discount or having the rolls comped would have been a better response from a good customer service stand point. Unfortunately we won t be coming back, even though your spicy tuna rolls are very good.

Unfortunately was unable to call in order as no one was picking up. So went at 6pm Friday to place take-out order and was advised at least an hour so left. Cook was really busy but was apologetic. This is second time this has happened and maybe they need more help.

Had lunch with my family here today - amazing sushi all around and really friendly chef & team. You can tell they truly care about anyone who comes to dine. Their aburi rolls rivals the quality at top Japanese establishments - one standout dish was their hotate aburi. Best weve ever had. We also enjoyed Tray D which had a nice assortment. Varieties of Sushi at a reasonable price.

This is a hidden gem!! We stayed in our Airbnb nearby and wished We could find them sooner. Their food quality can confidently compete with some of the high-end sushi restaurants in Vancouver. Super fresh fish, the rice and fish piece raio in one sushi is perfect. Sushi rice is cooked, prepared and handcrafted nicely when a piece of sushi presented to you. We had many times of abruri from Richmond to west Vancouver, they are all regularly good. What could i ask more with the price? But The wild salmon abruri impressed me, The taste is complex and has layers. We didnt expect the food quality is this high with the price there. Highly recommended. However, service definitely is a problem because looks like they are short staffed, we dont mind because you can tell the only two staffs in the restaurant are already on fire and trying their best.

Came in for dinner on a Tuesday night for a party of 10 to celebrate my brothersbirthday. Were the only one there for dine-in but theres a lot of pick-up/take-outs. We got our orders right away and the service was very friendly and quick. All the food we ordered were AMAZINGLY Delicious and fresh!!! Our fave were the Ebi Oshi and the Tuna Toro Aburi. We will definitely keep coming back here!!!

DISAPPOINTED !!! Lack of flavour. The chicken donburi doesn t even come with egg??? The sashimi is 17$ and with very little pieces, other sushi places give you double the amount. The services were so slow and it s not even busy on a Monday night. We were starving and the food does not even taste good. What a waste of money.

This is genuinely one of the best restaurants in Surrey to get satisfying and mouthwatering sushi. Their aburi sushi is always one of the first things I order and I would highly recommend their salmon aburi. The explosion roll is also one of the best rolls Ive ever had and the popping tobiko along with the soft crab meat and spicy tuna is an amazing pairing. This is truly a hidden gem in Surrey and I would highly highly recommend anyone to come here to get some sushi. I believe they also offer 10% off take-out orders which is a nice incentive for those who dont want to dine-in.

First of all, this place totally does not deserve 4.7 stars as the rating are now. This is a pretty small place with only one chef and one waiter and therefore, things are pretty slow. The biggest factor that made my family decide this to be a 2 star restaurant would be the ridiculously small portions that are not worth its price. Overall, food tastes average. I will give some credit to the chef; he did seem really passionate in his work. If you want to get some decent sushi, Sushi California would be the place to go.

Quality 3/5: The quality was okay at best, the rolls were falling apart slightly and the tuna was not very cold which is offsetting. Service 4/5: The lady was friendly. Dining area 2/5: Its a small, empty, feeling space, it needs more attention to make it feel like a cozy area.

My friend and I dined in for lunch today and we both had the best experience. Everything was so fresh and absolutely delicious. The salmon oshi is spot on when compared to Miku/ Minami, melts in your mouth like butter. The chef and server are the sweetest people ever. I will definitely be returning to try their other menu items!

Went to this place based on a food bloggers recommendation. Conclusion: I wont trust that food blogger again. The nigiri was probably one of the worst ones Ive had for a while. The rice was too dry, the tuna, the tamago, the salmon were all too dry. The teriyaki chicken was too dry as well and somewhat burnt around the edges. The miso soup was too salty. The only passable dish was aburi tuna nigiri, which was just okay... Maybe it was not a good day for the restaurant from inventory perspective. Or maybe it was not a good day for the chef... But definitely wont be back.

So happy to have such a great sushi place in Surrey. Especially the aburi sushi which is harder to find outside of Vancouver. The wild salmon oshi and Hawaiian roll are amazing. Yes, its a small operation so orders can take awhile to fill, but the staff is friendly and the food has always been worth the wait.

Very good experience. Everything seems fresh and well made. I wish there were options with simpler party trays as Im not a fan of dynamite and alaska rolls but there are a few for people who like these atypical sushi kinds. Also I missed some options like Chirashi Don in their menu but still has good variety. Parking: Plenty of parking right in front of it. Wheelchair accessibility: The whole stripmall is quite accessible in terms of ramps of disabled people.

We ordered the Party Tray D, so we can try the different variations of their Aburi sushi, and definitely no regrets! The sushi here is quality and everything tastes amazing! You can tell that the chef puts in alot of efforts into making the sushi. Mauna sushi has became our to go sushi restaurant to visit. If youre around surrey, I definitely recommend you to stop by and give them a try! Their menu is priced fairly and the owners/chef is super friendly.

My experience with Mauna was absolutely fantastic! I have some serious food allergies and the service and attention to detail regarding my allergies was the best that I have ever experienced. Not to mention, the food was sensational and I look forward to returning in the near future. I highly highly highly recommend!!

Great food. We had the sashimi salad and shared tray (tray D). The tray was amazing - different stuff from the regular nigiri and rolls. The sashimi salad was generous too

Great oshi tray selection! This place replaced a previous sushi restaurant (Zen Sushi) which was really good, and Im happy to say we really enjoyed Mauna Sushi too! We ordered Tray G which comes with 6 pieces each of the salmon, ebi, and saba oshi plus a spider roll and tiger roll. The oshi were delicious and fresh. The sauce on the ebi oshi was so good. We preferred the tiger roll over the spider roll in terms of flavour. There was also a special promo happening which gave us a free sushi tart (salmon, tuna, avocado, ebi and sushi rice). It was really tasty but was a bit difficult to share and eat. Would definitely return to try their other trays.

One of the best sushi places in Guildford. Their oshi sushi is about as good as Mikus and their special rolls are fantastic

I caught up with a friend here and we just had so much to talk about that we didnt look at the menu for ages. When we finally ordered (food was great too), we ate and spent a lot more time chatting away. The servers never rushed us, and continued to fill our tea once we finished eating. This was such a great experience. Service was fantastic, food was delicious and I highly recommend this little gem in Surrey.

Amazing food! The aburis are fantastic. You must also try the Explosion Roll. This place is a hidden gem worth visiting. The staff is also very friendly and welcoming. We will be back! Loved it.

I was craving tuna and I was treated to a beautiful tuna roll. It was so fresh and the texture was melt in your mouth. I also had a negitoro roll and avocado roll which were also fresh and well made. A very tasty, satisfying experience. Excellent friendly service too.

I liked this place a lot for my first time visit. For some odd reason, they offer 10% off if you order take out. If youre looking to not pay for tips, I think this would be the best way to go about it. I would go back to this place again, and try other foods.

I have been going to this place for the last 6 to 7 years, since I was in high school. Steve and his wife stella have always put there customers first. Providing excellent service and unbelievable food to eat. I have always recommended this place to people and they are never been disappointed. Its sad that they are finally closing down after serving us for so long. It was an honor to eat here, steve is an excellent sushi chef and his food shows it. I hope the best for him in the future and wish that he continues his success. Sushi zen will be missed.

Friendly owners. They have just opened up under new management from a previously loved sushi restaurant. They are still learning the ropes bit Im sure they will be I to the swing of things soon.

Wonderful experience at this place! The food is so fresh and delicious. The chef must really love what he does since every dish tastes soulful . Spicy tuna cone is amazingly good, chopped scallop roll is full of big scallop. Kids love chicken don and unagi don. We ordered half recommendation dishes described on their blackboard , all are super delicious. Definitely will come back.

Bottom line first: Great food, friendly service, good prices. Id been a customer of the previous sushi restaurant in this location for years, and Ill admit I was slightly skeptical about the prospect of a new place living up to those standards. Im happy to say however, that that skepticism was misplaced. The restaurant feels largely the same, and the food has a certain resemblance to how it was prepared at the last venue, particularly the nigiri. This isnt to say the food is identical, but it is of the same high quality and standard, done in their own way. I was impressed, and I would expect anyone concerned about the change in ownership will be pleasantly surprised. The new owners have also introduced an array of new menu options Im eager to try, particularly their aburi options. Overall, Im quite happy with the new ownership and will absolutely be coming back, they had some big shoes to fill and did so without missing a beat. Welcome to the area, Im eager for my next meal here.

BEST SUSHI EVER Ive tried so many places but this sushi is super unique and original. Store owner was super friendly and passionate about making sushi. The details going into making sushi was to the extreme. Also everything was fresh and delicious. I will definitely be visiting again.

This review could be 3 weeks old and we would still be waiting for our food .Sushi zen was there previous and was awesome ,they were fast food was good, customer service was great ,This new place the sushi is good but the time it took for the food was abysmal. We would go to the last place at least twice a week ,we will not be back to the new one.People are friendly, but food took literally forever

At first I was hesitant as the former Sushi Zen was a favourite, but Mauna Sushi has stepped up to the proverbial plate and delivered. Excellent food and reasonable pricing; great to have as a healthier take-out option especially during a pandemic.

Ordered their BC combo for take out. It was made fairly quickly and was a good price. The nigiri was tasting fresh and the bc roll was more like a baked salmon roll due to its lack of salmon skin but it was still delicious.

Great food. Great owners, really friendly. This is my #1 sushi restaurant and I cant count the number of sushi places I have been to.

The take out meals are just as good as the dine-in meals, I would highly recommend the dragon roll & sashimi salad. The sashimi salad is piled with a generous quantity of raw fish. The dragon roll is just AMAZING the flavour of the teriyaki sauce and crunchy prawn tempura is a HIT. Otherwise this would be my togo local sushi store.

Glad I came across this place on Skip the dishes. We got the party tray D and everything was delicious. Don t have to make the trek downtown anymore for my fave aburi sushi.

This place is AMAZING. I use to go here all the time when I went to the high school up the street. I come her occasionally and Steven and Stela always remember me. The food is always great, and quality is superb. I m disappointed in the comments saying they use farmed salmon and the rolls are too big etc. A lot of sushi places use farmed salmon because why would they risk fish with salmonella, worms and parasites? Don t give the restaurant 1 star because they use farmed salmon and go try the food out before you review. Go eat tuna here Some of the rolls are big but it s common sense to know what you re ordering? Like yam tempura roll? Common sense to know that yam tempura will come in big pieces? This place has offered such an amazing environment every time I come and when I bring in new people. Sushi Zen is a literal gem.
