China Lane in Sydney

I have been here a couple of times now and each time it has been amazing. Such great and attentive service. Food is top notch. Staff know their product and make great recommendations with drinks and food options.

A poor dining experience.. Food was not good, service was rushed and uninterested. And to reiterate, the food was really not good. Overly salty, oily, soggy.. the rice and fish hotpot was SO salty it was simply inedible. Won t go back.

I get the hype! We had high expectations for China Lane after reading all of these wonderful reviews and I can honestly say it lived up to it all! So, so amazing and definitely worth a visit. I still day dream about that pork belly. Yum!

I didnt like the food but I liked the pork belly. Melts in your mouth. The claypot rice was super salty. I think its because of my preferences. The service was great though. Atmosphere was okay, can get quite loud.

Sequence of service and duty of care was poor. Staff seemed to not care about how they served pouring water onto the table simply because the waitress couldn t do the simple act of looking at the glass when pouring. You would think the high prices and promise of a fine dining experience would translate to a great quality of service and customer care. Very disappointing experience, would really not recommend, save your money.

Have been coming to China Lane for some years but it is in decline. Website says open till late but kitchen closes at 9pm giving very little time to order if attending after a concert at the adjacent Sydney Recital Hall. A staff member saying you must order quickly does little to create a relaxed ambience. The quality of the food has also declined markedly. I can only presume that the place is under new management who seem to have very little idea how to run a restaurant. The empty tables give a good indication that this place is on the slide It desperately needs new management and a new chef Dietary restrictions: The one positive is that they still take the trouble to prepare dishes for people with dietary restrictions.

Centrally located in Sydneys Angel Place, this is a great place to catch up with friends before heading out to the bars or theatre. Great food (we went the banquet) and good atmosphere sitting out in this vibrant lane. Dietary restrictions: I was able to swap out pork for prawn in the San Choy Bow

The restaurant is located at Angel Place, a small laneway in the city, off George Street. It offers a modern Asian/Australian fusion cuisine . The staff are very friendly, approachable, professional, and customer focused. The service was pleasant and faultless. The food was fresh, very tasty and well presented, which made eating it a very pleasant experience. This place is definitively worth a visit. I certainly will go for another visit, so as to explore more of the fabulous dishes on offer on the menu.

China Lane is in a fantastic location - we were going to a Concert at the Recital Hall - and a great atmosphere. The staff were so helpful and attentive and the food was delicious. We would come back just for the fried rice

We love visiting China Lane - such a lovely spot to enjoy delicious food before a concert . The service and food are consistently excellent - I hope the pre concert supper menu never changes ! I did notice , on our last visit, that the hallway where the toilets are was not smelling quite as clean as would have been nice . We will be returning , despite this ,however .

Had dinner here at China Lane, had the sichuan chilli chicken wings, salt & pepper prawns and baked claypot rice. Unfortunately the chicken wings were way too salty and even the claypot rice was a bit too salty.

Whilst the food was tasty, the quantities were small, and the meat dishes were just full of the vegetables and hardly any meat. This is typical of a lot of places these days, they are unable to increase prices anymore so they cut cost by reducing the expensive ingredients.

Back again and thoroughly enjoyed our seafood and vegetarian banquet before the ACO.

We had a fantastic recent dining experience at China Lane. The food was exquisite. We loved in particular the Salt and Pepper prawns, Pork San Choy Bow and the Monkfish and rice hotpot dish is a new favourite. The service was also first rate and finishing off with some complementary birthday cocktails was the cherry (or lemon) on top. Highly recommend a visit

Absolutely fabulous meal! We had a seafood allergy in our group and staff were knowledgeable about food allergies and doubled checked each dish. Amazing service with a smile and humour. We would definitely return when back in Sydney.

Again a wonderful food and service experience at China Lane. Just the two of us for an evening meal after a day of work, looking for quality, great tastes and simplicity. So we knew that China Lane was where we needed to be and China Lane delivered as we knew it would. Only 4 selections along with the Riesling - sashimi, shrimp dumplings, pork dumplings and chicken wings. Great tastes and just the right quantity. As usual at China Lane. The wild bird songs on the Angel Lane streetscape set the mood, China Lane made it happen.

Absolutely wonderful, easily the best Chinese food I ve eaten. Service was fast and friendly and the prices were reasonable for the quality and location. Atmosphere fun but the cages of extinct birds outside put a tiny dampener on the night - but it s SO important to get that message across. The restaurant itself is beautiful.

Incredible food and great service.

Friendly staff and fine dining experience. We ordered one main each but later realised that the mains can easily be shared between Two people. Wish the attendent had mentioned portion sizes when we ordered as sadly fair bit of food got wasted as we could not do takeaway because we had other plans and could not carry food. On the whole we had a good experience and will visit again.

The most delicious food that I have ever tried

Omg!! What an experience, from greeting us to a good bye, great service by everyone at China Lane. The appetisers, main course were spectacular and of course the amazing Date/Ginger pudding was soul touching. Thank you China Lane for the great bday dinner!! Very nice & classy place, food was ok, best taste for the shark bay wa scallop and masterstock pork belly. Unfortunately the service wasnt like that. Waitresses were not friendly, they just worked there.

Popped into China Lane for an early dinner on Saturday night. The service was great. We had a great experience. Cannot fault the food. From our Pork Bao Bin starters and the chicken & gruyere spring rolls, to the wok tossed beef and the massaman. All were fantastic. Can always recommend a visit to China Lane if you are in the City.

We knew we wanted an Asian menu and one of the reasons we picked China Lane was its well priced fixed menu able to be served to meat eaters, pescos and vegetarians at the same table without minimum number of people requirement. Situated in the heart of the city laneways, we were given a great banquette table. Looked after beautifully by Louis, especially Eros and Prabina, the service was warm and faultless, the food sensational and the environment nicely vibey without being too loud. This special occassion meal was a great success!! Thank you China Lane.

The ingredients are delicious but the service is terrible. It seems to be biased against people who dont speak English well. No one responded to the waiter every time. Even if I called them loudly, few people responded.

The taste is quite average. It sells Western food under the banner of Chinese food, but it does not meet the service standards of Western food. The service to Asians is very poor. If you want to eat Chinese food, it is recommended to choose other restaurants, which cost 80 Australian dollars per person.

Always a good place to go. I like sitting outside because the inside can be noisy. Definitely check this place out. If you need recommations ask the stuff. Also, be sure to look up when you go in, the alleyway is lined with birdcages.

I have been to China Lane many times and the food is always amazing. Unfortunately I was disappointed when I took my partner there for lunch for his birthday. I booked online and selected the option that it was for a birthday. I then called a few days before the booking as I wanted to see if a candle could be put in the dessert when brought out. I asked if this could be noted on my booking and the woman I spoke to assured me as long as I specified it was for a birthday in the online booking they would take care of it. Unfortunately when our dessert came out there was no candle. Once again the food was great but this really tainted the experience for me.

Have been bringing the family here for over 10yrs. Came in for an ad hoc meal tonight. Still ONE of the BEST restaurants in Sydney. Kistians food is still 2nd to none and the ambience is just right.

All I can say is WOW!! I stumbled across this restaurant on google, trying to find somewhere in the city to go to dinner. I am beyond impressed with everything about this place! I ve worked in hospitality for over 10 years and it s really hard to find service and food of this quality. All of the wait staff are super knowledgeable and professional. The food is absolutely amazing! Definitely highly recommend China Lane!! 10/10!!

We had lunch at this lovely Asian fusion restaurant, from the moment we were greeted by front of house and our lovely waitresses, we knew we were going to have a wonderful experience. The restaurant was packed but the staff worked seamlessly, we were very impressed. I must make special mention of the wonderful service we received from Fabiola and Nonny, they were warm, friendly, efficient and knowledgeable. The food did not disappoint, the stand out was definitely the absolutely delicious Massaman curry, the serving sizes are quite large, so keep that in mind when ordering. We will definitely be returning to sample more delicious dishes and look forward to receiving the same wonderful service. Highly recommended!

Probably one of the worst restaurant experiences - thanks to the manager Eros. My 8 months pregnant friend and I went there last night (Tuesday) for dinner. When I came in to the restaurant, I was greeted by a very dry Hi, how can I help you? , I told I had a reservation and was escorted to our table without any words, no smile. I was a bit surprised by that, but I hoped that the person was just a host and we wouldn t have to deal with him any later. We placed our order - some entrees and mains. We saw that the restaurant was busy, but 30 min later with no food, my friend decided to check on it. She was able to get the attention of the same unfriendly host (Eros) who was around the kitchen area, she asked about the delay and he said he will check (no apologies whatsoever) but never got back to us even though he was standing next to the kitchen. Then our waiter said to us that they have our order and they didn t forget about it. Another 10 min and the table that came after us got their food. 40-45 min no entrees, waiters all seemed to be busy, I approached the same unfriendly host who was standing next to the computer and asked if I can speak to a manager, he said he is the manager. From the moment I approached him, he seemed to be hostile. I explained the situation and he just kept looking at me absolutely indifferently, I mentioned that the table after us already got food and he just kept looking at me saying mmm , no apologies no nothing and I asked him if he could ask the kitchen to start making the mains as well because we can t be waiting for mains after entrees for another 40 min. He said ok . I left back to the table feeling very appalled by the manager s response. As I sat back to tell my friend all about it, he gave me a death stare or at least that s what it looked like (to note: the computer is facing the entrance so if he standing at the computer he can t be turned to me, and I m sitting slight behind the computer to the right, so, no, it did seem like an accidental look at me). At this point we actually felt that it was creepy and felt a bit threatened. Honestly at that point I wanted to get up and leave. We got our entrees, and I wanted to say thank you to Charlie as he was the only person who apologised to us at that stage and was nice and friendly to us. We did get a complimentary dish for the long wait, so that was nice. Then another weird situation happened - Eros (the unfriendly host - manager) as he was walking to the kitchen dropped a bunch of plates and then what it looked like from the anger/frustration he purposefully drops another plate he was holding and kept walking. At this point we already think that there s something really off with the guy. We kept looking at other staff members reactions, they seemed to be a bit startled but not surprised. And I might be wrong but it gave us a vibe of a toxic atmosphere going on at that place. Anyway we had our dinner, food was good but it s really hard to enjoy it after such an appalling treatment from the manager of that place. I should say we really liked wok tossed beef tenderloin. At the end after we paid we asked our waiter for Charlie and Eros names (they don t have any name tags) and he asked us if something went wrong. I asked whether Eros is actually the manager and he said that Eros is the second manager and our waiter (I don t want to be wrong but I think his name is Lewi) is the actual manager. We were shocked, told him everything, he apologised and gave us complimentary desserts to take home which was nice. This is the longest review I have ever left, but I wanted to fully describe this unique experience. So I gave 1 star for the food, 1 star to Charlie and 1 star for our complimentary desserts at the end. Would I return to this place? Absolutely not while Eros is working there.

Fantastic restaurant, excellent service, food amazing and great wine list. The overall dining experience is one you dont often get these day but we definitely did here.

Food was great service was also fantastic but what stood out the most was the friendly young lady that greeted us at the start of the night and she was absolutely lovely when we went up to pay she was a delightful and well mannered young lady. Hope you see this Nonny we enjoyed our visit.

If you re not sure which one should you try,waitress always explains and suggests! Especially Febiola who knows everything and explains very well. And also they can offer us small portions so if you want to try a little bit,that s a good idea,you can order as a small portions! I m always impressed every time and they update new menu constantly so we must try!

Great food and great service. Restaurant was really loud and unfortunately toilets were not kept well but if you can look past that then it was a good experience all round. Just take note that theres no corkage at this place so you cant bring your own booze.

Food is nice but just isn t mind blowing stuff! Very pricey, definitely paying for the spot. The drinks were lovely and the staff were nice. Venue is nice and quiet and central to the city.

We selected the pre concert option - equal to the best set menus weve ever eaten. Fantastic value @ $52pp! One niggle. Whats w the 1.65% credit card surcharge, when the Reserve Bank says max is 1.5%? More specifically, why is it an add on at all, when its simply another cost of doing business? It should be factored into the price, like GST, superannuation, workers compo, rent, insurance, etc... In the UK and EU its illegal to add credit card surcharges and it should be the same in Oz.

OMG! Absolutely delicious. I shared the banquet of 10 dishes with 2 other people and it was incredible. Tastebuds explosions. Fresh ingredients, delicate and flavoursome, beautifully cooked and presented. Excellent value for money.

When I did group booking, a person who was handling bookings started yelling at me for asking invoice that we already paid for in advance. On the day of booking food took forever to come out and all of my clients were complaining by being hungry.

We had lunch on a stormy rainy day as a result were seated inside. The restaurant was full and buzzing, food was lovely, fresh . We ordered prawn san cha boa, followed by barramundi steamed and silken fried tofu with rice excellent. Came out quickly. My only comment was the noise inside restaurant.

We have been here a few times now and every single time, I can safely say that I have been blown away with the service and the food and beverages. Nothing is an issue for them and they are so friendly and accommodating. We recently took our friends who were here from Canada and I wanted to show them a good time and they were blown away. Will definitely be coming back and working my way through the menu, too many dishes to try at once! If you haven t been before, I suggest going for a banquet menu so you can try a bunch of different items at the same time :)

Cracking place for a weekday evening! Almost as good, if not better than their sister restaurant China Doll. Highlights were the spring rolls, puffs, the curry fish (my fav!) and the seafood san chow bao! Highly recommend, atmosphere is cosy.

Location is in one of Sydney s laneways near the Ivy. Always nice Asian fusion dishes. A bit like an Asian tapas. The salt and pepper prawns we re truly amazing. Wine prices are reasonable in terms of acceptable mark up. Good quality food.

Ordered waygu massaman.$42 Unfortunately not much massamam taste and although beef was thick ,tender and a good amount, it had no fat marbling like all waygu beef has. It was more like casserole beef. Waiter couldnt do anything about it obviously but i see it as false advertising. I wont be returning.

Wagyu Massaman is the best

Dinner last Thursday evening, perfect. Delicious food and a little different which is refreshing. The wait staff are really good at their jobs particularly Jeff who looked after us. Highly recommend it for service, food & location.

Food was ok but for the price, underwhelming. Not a huge fan of the atmosphere. We were told we had to sit outside despite maybe 80% of the restaurant being empty on a Monday night. Presumably they wanted to make it look busier by filling the outside tables. This wasnt the greatest as there was some very loud construction work happening nearby. Once we were actually seated, the service was lovely.

Love how good the Asian-Australian food scene is in Sydney. This place had such a great variety of options but I have to say that the Crispy Chicken in the mains, the Shu-Mai in the starters and the Spanner Crab truffle fried rice are the real standouts.

As a lover of Asian fusion food Ive been here twice. I decided to come back with a larger group to try the banquet and it didnt disappoint. The quality and quantity of the food was superb and worth every cent. The Standout dishes for us were the pork belly, the kingfish and the scallop dumplings. Service was attentive being a Thursday night and not at capacity. Waiter was very helpful with pairing wine for the meal. Definitely coming back again.

Great Food and amazing service form Mary from Argentina !

The cuisine is modern Asian focusing on fresh, seasonal produce with traditional flavors and contemporary techniques. Service is very fast and efficient and the restaurant staff do exceptionally well to get theatre and concert goers, who all tend to arrive when the restaurant opens for the evening at 5-30pm, out the door by 7-00pm.

Extremely disrespectful to the art installation of Forgotten Songs which commemorates the songs of fifty birds once heard in central Sydney, before they were gradually forced out by European settlement. To have the audacity to put up speaker that blasts loud music outside the restaurant is frustrating.

Tucked away off the main street, and well worth a visit. The food was excellent, as was the service. Lunchtime specials all round. Great wine.

Dinner at China Lane while in Sydney last week. Been a few years since I last dined here and still serving some amazing food. The Pork Belly is sensational. A must try if you re visiting Sydney CBD.

I didn t know what to expect when we came here, but I was left so so impressed by the food quality! All the dishes were amazingly delicious! For entrees, we ordered the steamed pork, prawn, scallop & mushroom shu mai which was delicious; and the spanner crab and dried scallop shanghai noodles w mushroom butter - this blew my mind, so so tasty! For mains, we got the crispy skin chicken which was yum, the fish of the day which was well cooked; and the spanner crab and truffled fried rice w flying fish roe and egg, which was the star of the show - the best fried rice I ve ever had in Sydney! Also got the fried cauliflower. I was so so impressed. Re service, the lady serving our table was very friendly, super helpful and attentive. The place was busy for a Thursday evening.

The food does not match the price and is not cost-effective. The most important thing is that it is not delicious. The service is missing one star because the meal is given with a plate but no spoon.

Crispy Morton bay bugs and John Dory in saffron sauce. Very finely done.

Had the special duck pancakes that were fried with sesame seeds, was good but not as good as traditional duck pancakes. Top dish was the John Dory, everyone loved. Whiting also excellent. Asian greens were pleasant. Was excited for the eggplant which is one of my favourites at Malaya and Mr Wong. This version was good, but not great like the others. Was busy and staff were polite but seemed understaffed as we had to ask for one of our orders which started coming out before the rice. Was quite noisy as so busy, would opt for outside of the weather suits if it is busy.

Gorgeous restaurant with fantastic asian cuisine, 10/10 Vegetarian options: Lots of selection

We decided to give this a go as my friend is vegetarian and had heard the veggie options were plentiful. They didnt disappoint! The veggie dumplings were the best Ive ever had, and the tofu mains also delicious. We decided on dessert and the portions were so generous we left absolutely stuffed. Try the ginger and fig pudding! Lovely staff and a nice ambience to the place.

We had the banquet and they agreed to make some changes to accommodate some dietary requirements that we had. The food was simply fantastic. The atmosphere was great and the service was awesome. The flavours were out of this world I hope to visit again. Amazing food,

Fantastic restaurant. Service impeccable. We turned up without a booking and were quickly seated despite the restaurant being very busy. We only had about 50 minutes before we needed to leave to go to the theatre. We told them this and they made sure we were well looked after to make sure this happened. Staff very attentive, took our dietary requirements into account, ensured all our meals were bought out in a fast fashion and so we got out right on time. Nothing was too much trouble. The food was hot and fresh and very tasty. Would definitely come back and highly recommend this place to everyone.

Rude host and hostess, so I left and didn t bother sitting down. Who knows.. maybe they are short staffed or for whatever reason but it would Be nice to be courteous and pretend to put on a smile.

Wow amazing food

China Lane s food and service was amazing!! I d recommend them 100%. We had our anniversary dinner there and we couldn t of been happier, food was delicious.

We had the set menu with a large group. The highlight was the pork belly. The others were mediocre. While everything was fairly executed and quite tasty, it lacked creativity and depth to deliver a honest reflection of the cuisine of the dish. Maybe showcasing more traditional dishes or going deeper and heavier on the spice or base flavours would set this fusion restaurant apart of the multitude like it throughout the cbd. Overall a pleasant experience but not a memorable one.

Waited a long time to be serviced... Sirloin Steak was ordinary.

We ordered the banquet option at China Lane. Overall the food was good, but nothing mind blowing and a bit on the salty side. They also miscalculated the cost of our drinks, but fixed up their mistake quickly once we pointed that out. The lychee gin cocktail was the highlight of the night, yummy and went well with the food.
