One of the premier restaurants in Sydney and an easily amongst the very top Japanese restaurants. Its been a consistent mainstay me me to visit frequently for my whole life and you cannot find a better place for Japanese food if quality, experience, service and atmosphere is what you are seeking, but it does come at a price. The menu includes the typical popular Japanese dishes like sushi and also includes more traditional ones like shio koji, and winter favorites such as shabu shabu and sukiyaki which are seldom found elsewhere in Sydney and certainly not at the same quality. Overall best Japanese restaurant in my experience and worth a visit. Vegetarian options: Vegetarian options are available and you can request a vegetarian kaiseki (set) menu as well Dietary restrictions: All dietary restrictions can be catered for upon request Parking: Its the city, no parking available really, and those that are are expensive Wheelchair accessibility: Location is wheelchair accessible with t wheelchair lift in the lobby to allow access to the restaurant

Best traditional Japanese restaurant in Sydney by far. Everything - taste, service, ambience - is on point. Definitely a must try for fans of traditional Japanese food - I have been multiple times and each time it has been consistently amazing. Highly recommend the toothfish, caviar, and the shabu shabu (make sure you get the risotto afterwards which they make with the stock from the shabu shabu).

The food is not bad, but they waste our time with poor parking service. One shouldnt wait 15 minutes to get out of their carpark. Its a somewhat upmarket restaurant with prices to reflect that, but customer service is poor. Parking: Their parking lot is four levels below ground, but getting out is made difficult due to poor customer service. This car park was a one star experience.

I ordered the new years lunch box(osechi) and to put it bluntly, it was one of the most disappointing experiences that I ve ever had. - the photo on the ad only showed random wooden boxes that was not included(for context usually an osechi will come with a box) - one of the dishes were canned products that they didn t even make - they didn t include the tataki that was in the list of things that was supposed to be in it - they were all packaged in a sealed plastic bag, and seemed like there was no attempt to make it decent? - flavor was mediocre at best I ve never dined in at Azuma, so this review is just for the osechi. If you are consider getting the osechi for 380 dollars and 17 bucks for handling fees(which I didn t understand they charged us that when we had to pick it up from them anyway) I ll strongly recommend not getting azuma s.

Quality ingredients, superb cooking. Every bite is delicious, staff is also incredibly friendly. One dish took longer then expected to arrive and we were given miso soup while we waited.

Service: 1/5 The service is not acceptable for me. We walked in the restaurant, the staff asked us to wait and arranged a table for us. In the meantime, there was another group of three walked in after us also asked a table. However, the staff went to check the table, and then gave the behind group a table straight away without telling us anything. It was very unfair, so I told the staff that group was behind of us, you should arrange us a table first. But the staff answered They are regular customer, without being apologised about this. I couldnt understand whats the point of this. If they DO NOT serve the new customers well, how come they could keep the new customers. We ordered a sukiyaki set for two, it was normally to be served within 5 mins in the other restaurants, but we waited for about 20 mins. I tried to ask a staff, but staffs just stood over at the bar area and talked to each other. Finally, we got someone served us, we told her we have a meeting after 30 mins, and then the staff served the sukiyaki set in 1min. I DO NOT understand why they make customer wait for 20 mins, as they could serve in 5-10 mins. Food: 2/5 We ordered a sukiyaki set, which is $360 for two. It is 2GR Full Blood M9+ Wagyu, with a plate of mixed vegetable. I thought maybe the portion is good as the price is not cheap. But, its only about 300 gram ( I guess) of the meat. I understand the Wagyu quality is quite good, but definitely $360 for two is too overpriced. Atmosphere: 4/5 The environment is quite good. The design is Japanese style, and tables arranged with a good space. Overall I could not understand why the restaurant with good environment and high price market, but has this kind of service. Probably, this is a special case. But, to treat every single customer evenly is a very basic knowledge of customer service, let alone this is a high end restaurant. So, it wont a place for a lunch or dinner for me again.

We tried to make a reservation. I understand that booking my require a credit card (but still bizarre to me), however forcing people to spend at least 75$ (even if you are a walk in) is outrageous.

We enjoyed both the Wagyu steak and Shabu as they were exceptionally delicious. The meat was incredibly tender and fresh. Its recommended to have congee instead of rice. The soup was incredibly delicious, made from a combination of beef and vegetables. The service was also excellent, with the staff being very attentive and polite.

Everything we ordered was fabulous and the staff service was excellent. Will definitely be going back in future.

Went above and beyond for us, printed a cute photo to celebrate the occasion in a card, made origami and a special dessert to celebrate our night. Returned from a long work trip to wonderful and thoughful staff. Highly recommend

We booked a private room for dinner for eight people. The food was fresh and delicate. And the staff was professional and attentive. A very enjoyable experience. Will come back!

I ordered the special Winter Menu with Tempura broccolini and avocado together with chawanmushi, and 2 nigiri . Overall, good and decent food quality, it is quite pricey overall, but I enjoy the service at the restaurant . So overall, highly recommending this place!

Quick little trip to Japan Went here for wedding anniversary. Food was good but not huge and not great though specially sushimi. Steak was nice. They surprised us with complementary green tea ice cream made by the chef and a printed photo session. Loved the awesome service and the hosts which I tipped for.

Best Japanese food in Sydney. A bit of an odd place as it s in the Chifley building but the sushi is just incredible. Highly recommend and worth the price. Fresh seafood, masterfully cut. Great oysters too.

bad taste for SUKIYAKI, too sweet!!! The waiter made the sukiyaki completely wrong and it tasted terrible! I kept raising my hand to indicate that I needed help, but the waiter kept chatting about Japanese culture with the white man at the table next to me. I also made eye contact with another older male waiter and raised my hand, but I was completely ignored. If I have the chance, I will definitely not come again.

Im quite surprised by how fine dining handles a request this bad. Contacted them to book a room in a short notice for a private function. The number of persons was not accepted but we agreed to pay for room capacity. They told me to expect a call soon. I waited for a couple of hours then called to confirm but they were still not sure! Then called a few minutes later to say staff were not available for private rooms!! This should have been known in the first call not to argue the number and waste our time. I understand the restaurant policy on numbers but the response was very impolite and the excuse sounded made up.

Thank you we had a great evening, staff was supper helpful and accomodating.

I booked a table for 4 almost 3 months in advance for my boyfriends birthday dinner. Just a day prior to my booking date I got a message from Azuma that they can only provide tasting set menu due to shortage of staff and a la carte menu is not available. With such a short notice I had no choice but proceed with my booking. Honestly set menu food is still ok and I can give it 3 stars but I dont appreciate such kind of short notice. I understand its COVID and there are uncertainties but 1 day notice is really disappointing.

I booked Azuma for my wifes birthday and asked them specifically to wish her a happy birthday. Unfortunately, they seem to have forgotten. The sushi was extremely good; the wagyu, not so much. The service was fine, but not exceptional.

Highly recommend to anyone who loves real authentic Japanese food, flavor and the visuals. Mr Azuma and all his staffs were very friendly and polite with smiles on all the staff, cant go without mentioning double thumbs up for the Susi Shef Hiroshi as well. We had Mr Azuma special course menu with little twist, which we were very lucky to have. Every dish that came out had been prepared to perfection and in detail, you can actually taste and enjoy the pure natural flavor of each ingredients. Mr Azuma have been cooking for more than 50 years of his life and I must say Mr Azuma is a true culinary artist who still has passion for traditional Japanese cuisine. Highly recommend not to any but to everyone.

Restaurant felt out of dates. We had the tasting menu, but the food took way too long to come out. The sashimi wasn t even fresh. Steak came out cold and dry. Overall the foods just lacked flavours. Service was the only thing that could save this place.

My Favourite Japanese Restaurant in Sydney!! Vegetarian options: They have many Vege options. Parking: When booking a table over the phone, they always offer free parking. Kid-friendliness: They have really good high chair, but they are not very kids (babies, toddlers) friendly, especially in the main dining area - this is what they said when I made a booking on the phone - it is because they don t want to interrupt other s dinning experience. (As one of Azuma s fan, I totally understand about this.) If you book a room, its okay to bring the children. Wheelchair accessibility: Easy Access through the Elevator!

No bento boxes makes this not a place of great value, rather pricey. Beer comes from cans too.

If you enjoy authentic Japanese then you should come to this restaurant. You should try the sashimi and sushi as they are very fresh and almost melt in you mouth. The Udon is very delicious and the noodles are just right with the tempura. The Wagyu Tataki is very delicious and very enjoyable. When you arrive need to scan the QR Code and then a staff member will take you to your table. Can choose a la carte or a degustation menu. The staff are friendly and will help you with the menu by making suggestions. If you park in Wilson Parking next to the Chifley Square Building , you can ask the staff for complimentary parking when you are finished with your meal.

The best Japanese restaurant in Sydney. I have had lunch here many times and dinner a few times as well. The Bento boxes are terrific - such a good array of different types of food including Miso, sashimi, tempura, protein choice - the teriyaki chicken is immaculate! The sauces to go with sashimi are so light and delicious. Wine choice is wonderful. The service is excellent. Please note the fabulous bentos are not available at present due to Covid (not sure why). I am awaiting their return! Highly recommend Azuma.

We had the tasting menu and it was very delicious. Highlight was the grilled glacier cod which melted in my mouth. Atmosphere is great, and cocktails were good. They also had mocktails which made the designated driver happy. Finally they had Zenzai (red bean soup with mochi and ice cream on the side) which I ordered in addition to the tasting menu was just the perfect way to finish a lovely meal off. Definitely coming back again to try other foods on the menu.

This is my go-to Japanese restaurant in Sydney. The team here are always accommodating and the food quality and presentation is classic fine Japanese dining. Everyone knows, that really knows Japanese, that for the finest, you go to Kenzan in Melbourne and Azuma in Sydney. I love this place and always will.

We had the wagyu salad which had strips of wagyu so juicy, tender and sweet it was a pleasure to take each bite. Definitely though this restuarant is at a $$$ price point not $ as displayed on google maps so be warned!

I only ever had dessert here so I went in expecting nothing. Tried the 5 course lunch here and was pleasantly surprised at the consistency of each dish. Fresh sashimi with fine nigiri sushi mixed with the core dish; some excellent wagyu. For the food offered at the price it is being pushed at, this is worth a try. A healthy drinks menu of various Japanese liquors is the bonus on top.

Outstanding ambience, service and cuisine. From the location to the mannerisms in which the service is delivered, we came here for my brothers thirteenth birthday (whilst Ive been a few times over the years), the staff went beyond and above in customising the hot pot to be vegetarian for me. Conversing in Japanese with me showed sincere reciprocation, which is endemic to Japanese culture. The food was of top quality and the whole family thoroughly enjoyed the evening. Domo Arigato Gozaimasu !

Went there for my birthday and tried the tasting menu. Everything was lovely! A bit pricy but worth it. The staff brought out a little birthday dessert platter. They also took a picture of us and printed it out for us which I thought was such a nice touch.

Went there for lunch with wife for anniversary. Hands down one of the best Japanese restaurant we have been to in Sydney ! We ordered Wagu beef Tataki, a 10 piece combination sushi, 2 x pieces of toro sushi, steam white clam and a grilled yellowtail Collar! Everything was cooked to perfection and all sashimi were as fresh as it could be. The soup base of the white clam was so good, I felt like drinking it all (so embarrassing). Service was great and we had such an enjoyable time, couldn t fault it 1 bit. 6/5 stars from us and we will come back for sure

This is where the Emperor of Japan eats when in Sydney, try the food and you will discover why. It is better than any Japanese food I have eaten in Tokyo. Given the quality and quantity of the food no other Japanese restaurant in Sydney can compare.

Premium Japanese dining experience. As a couple we enjoyed four superb dishes: Dengaku Eggplant, Egg seafood custard x 2, Deep fried white bait, Tempura seafood, and Wagyu steak 250g. All-up $161. We added three x 60 ml premium sake tastings for two for $60($30x2). Attentive service and quiet relaxed atmosphere. Well worth the trip into the CBD. Offers validation for free parking in Chifley building.

I heard here is one of high quality Japanese restaurant in Sydney. For sure taste was not bad and inside of the restaurant was pretty comfy but a little bit disappointed. Price was quite high but they served salmon mayo sushi. Ive never seen that in this kind of high quality restaurant in Japan. At first I thought it was a joke. lol

Azuma is definitely a great place to dine at with great value for the money. We had the Degustation menu (the 7 course meal) with extra sushi platter from their dinner menu and it was not disappointing at all. The quality of the food definitely exceeds the set prices (as I personally believe) and the service is also outstanding. Ive tried several sushi restaurants and most of the restaurants were not up to my standards. Not to mention that the proportions are quite fine and filling. Although its not a fine dining restaurant, it is classy for a night out with your significant other, a nice family dinner or lunch, where you can have an experience similar to fine dining. The atmosphere is not as intense as those of fine dining restaurants with more relaxing and friendly environment and staff which makes it really comfortable to just enjoy your food. Definitely will recommend to friends and families and would love to return to try their shabushabu or sukiyaki .

Very nice setting restaurant. Food was always excellent. Service has bveen improved a lot in the past months due to new staffs management from what we noticed. Wish Mr Azuma would change the menu more often so the regulars would get to try something new and exciting. Love this place.

Had the degustation 7 course with sake/wine pairings. We dont really do much fine dining but we definitely appreciated and enjoyed the quality of dishes. Our table positioning was very odd and awkward however. Despite having a reservation, it felt like we were just positioned close to the general walking path because thats the only space that was left.

Authentic and fresh, definitely on the expensive side but worth it

The last visit was quite disappointing and the food not as good as before. Been coming to this japanese restaurant for years and it used to be in my top 5 restaurants in Sydney, never had a dissapointing meal until this most recent visit. First thing I noticed was a lack of specials (none at all) which is a shame as the 3 of us were looking forward to toro nigiri and the miso cod which we ve had countless times. Thats fine though, as we ll just order off the alacarte which is usually very good. We started with the mixed sashimi, which we ve had many times before, this time though, I could tell it was already pre-sliced by the color and the taste. While I would expect this from a $80 a meal sushi joint, this is not acceptable for a $400 a meal place like Azuma. Next was the scampi miso soup, again presentation was way below what it used to be, the whole scampi was literally under the soup just floating like a corpse. The other 2 people I dined with said the taste was similar to previous though. 3rd dish was supposed to be the salted grilled fish but the waitress got our order wrong (never repeated and confirmed order with us to make sure it is correct) and gave us the soup with clams instead. So we ate it anyways, the soup we ve had on previous visits and taste was the same but a few of the clams did have grit in them, again, this never happened before. 4th dish we had the rangers valley steak, no complaints there. 5th dish was the crispy bone flounder which we never had before. This is NOT a japanese dish. For $60, I dont expect to be served a chinese dish at a japanese restaurant. Not sure what it us doing on the menu, if I wanted cantonese food I would go to Golden Century. 6th dish was the grilled fish which we had to reorder since the waitress gave us pipis instead. This was absolutely horrible and we literally took 1 bite each and just left it. The dish relies on the grilling and salt to accentuate the sweetness of the flesh, its an oily fish so if not charred / grilled properly will taste very fishy, unfortunately for us, it was not grilled properly, so was just oily smelly salted fish. As you can see, the dinner wasnt great. It seemed like the kitchen took a lot of shortcuts and sacrificed speed and efficiency for taste. Reason I took the time to write this very long review is because I really hope they can lift their game back to what it was before. As we hope to experience the spectacular food it used to have before once again.

Fabulous spot for business function. Ambience is vibrant but not loud and crowded. Set dinners are reasonably price for what is offered and parking is free. Generally have hotpot here with toothfish (taste like cod) as a side dish. For hotpot, the premium Waygu is worth the extra $$$ over the Ranger Wagyu which has less fat and is not as tender.

Amazing food and nice atmosphere. Quality was excellent. We did have a friend on a budget and saw this place was one $, I think it should be $$$.

This is a fine dining restaurant however we all the dishes came out within 30 minutes. It s like a fast food hall and there were no one waiting for the table. The waitress was unfriendly or perhaps she doesn t understand English we were still eating and she came to collect our plates

I thought it was excellent. I have no complaints, only compliments. We had a fantastic time and meal there yesterday. We had the tasting menu which was fantastic. I will be returning for the Omakase.
