The food is excellent at Mr Wong. We don't have a booking and had to wait about an hour for a table, but it was well with it. The kitchen is on show on the ground floor, so you can see the flurry of activity that goes into preparing the food. The rice was delicious, but about 3 times too much for me. I recommend sharing one portion between 2 or 3, depending how hungry you are. My main course was packed with texture as well as flavour, and the decor inside gives a really nice feel to the place.

We loved this restaurant for the service, the food, the building and the overall experience - was well worth the money, which didn’t end up being that much, but we didn’t go crazy. We had the dim sum, Peking duck and the beef dish. Everything was perfectly done, especially the beef. While the food was good, the service was amazing as the ambience inside the restaurant which both made it special. I loved the discreet location in the alley and the beautiful restored building. Definitely worth a visit!

Above average Chinese 'fine' dining. Overall good was decent. Peking duck was good; flavorful, good skin, moist meat. However, the clams were slightly bitter, and the vegetables decent. Restaurant was a quite loud too, but service was good. Nice place to take those from out of town, but would maybe look elsewhere if you want to find a more traditional, good wok hay place. More catered to a western palette.

I will say because this place was highly spoken about by almost everyone in the city I did have very high expectations. I knocked off a point because the drinks weren’t that great that next time I would probably skip out on them. The food though were very generous portions and quite good. Surprisingly I really enjoyed the fried rice, duck and a cold chicken dish at the very beginning. I would come back but I’m a huge group to try their extensive menu!

Every time when I visit Sydney, I would revisit Mr Wong because of the decent inner design and decoration of the restaurant and the Chinese food. Honestly not every dish served in this restaurant tastes exactly the same as it should be in the actual Chinese cuisine recipe but I really like the red bricks and the ancient Chinese decorations inside the restaurant. This restaurant is so popular that there is a time limit for dining within 90 minutes, which I don’t particularly like and understand.

The best fried rice I’ve ever had! Perfectly seasoned and cooked to perfection ✨ The dim sum was also amazing—fresh, thin, and full of flavor. Other dishes were great too, and the staff were super nice, friendly, and attentive. One of the best meals I’ve had in Sydney! 🥟🥢

We visited here to celebrate a family's upcoming wedding and we received excellent service, with the staff providing lift access for customers with limited mobility. The waiter kept asking if the meal was delicious? I would say the food was not the best, but the service was definitely excellent. I really don't recommend the pork, it's really not tasty and doesn't really achieve the traditional Asian taste. But I really recommend the beef and duck. In the end, we were so happier to leave that we forgot our bags 😂. Restaurant staff immediately caught up with us customers. We will visit again next time

One positive is that we made a booking quite last minute, This was our 3rd visit to Mr Wongs, previously we had very good 4/5 star experiences but on this occasion, which happened to be my birthday, we had a late booking and I felt there was less care in the service, the food not as good as it was on our previous 2 visits, we didnt order as much food or drink as previously because it was quite late, still pretty pricey as expected. Though there were some friendly, welcoming staff, It seemed some were just standing and waiting for the restaurant to empty for close. Also we were served a large special fried rice, when we had actually only ordered a small, the mistake was acknowledged on arrival of the food and we were told that we would be charged only for the small serve, when we mentioned this later, while paying our bill we were told that we were charged only for the small serve but discovered from review of the menu that we had been charged for the large. Also, though the flavours were nice, the duck for the duck pancakes was cut too large for the delicate pancake, quite difficult to eat with any ease, and took the joy out of the experience sadly.

December 16, 2024

A lump of seasoning. Excessive use of sugar, salt, and low-quality oyster sauce. It tastes worse and cheaper than instant dumplings. The food is not worth it. Its a waste of ingredients such as shrimp and scallops. The taste makes you wonder who the chef is. Avoid it. Vegetarian options: I guess youre asking if there are any vegan options... There are a few types, but there are. However, it is extremely salty and sweet and is not healthy. Dietary restrictions: Dislikes overly salty, sweet, and fatty foods. Kid-friendliness: Do you accept infants? Even if admission is allowed, the interior is too noisy and the food is high in sodium, so it would be harmful, right? Wheelchair accessibility: The entrance is a staircase, so it appears wheelchair access is not possible.

Peking duck was also delicious! We ve got served by waiter named Jun who had exceptional customer service and very friendly. He asked what the occasion was so I mentioned it was for mum s bday and when we ordered fried ice cream for dessert, he has organised a lettering service with korean pronounce knowing that we are korean! We were very touched with attention to detail by Jun and all other servers! I would definitely comeback for yumcha lunch as the atmosphere, service and foods were all amazing!

This is a low 4. While the food is a solid 5 in terms of quantity and taste, the atmosphere and service bring the total experience down. The biggest disappointment was the timing of the food. My wife recieved her main dish 10min before mine. Unacceptable at this price point and from a restaurant of this stature. Furthermore, be aware this restaurant seats 200+ people, the tables are very close, and the service team is spread thin. It s very loud, and it feels like you are eating at a night club. Overall, I m glad we went but we won t go back.

Mr. Wong is just okay. The ambiance is loud, the service is polite but inattentive, and the food is hit-or-miss. While the duck was flavorful, most dishes lacked the freshness and balance I expected. For the price, the quality doesn t quite deliver. It s fine if you re in a pinch, but there are better options out there.

The staff were happy to pass on recommendations, always courteous and polite, didnt have to wait long for attention and made the visit very comfortable. The food was to die for. I wont list everything but the steamed dimsum, the spicy chicken and Peking duck were literally perfect. This place is so overrated, ordered quite a few dishes and none of them were above average. The place is so busy and the waitresses are running around frantically to serve everyone and could not attend to the tables easily. To top it off, when I asked the waitress if the chefs boil their lobsters/crabs alive-she responded that they most likely do. Such a cruel and barbaric practice to turn us off this place even more. If you like quality food-don t come here.

An excellent dining experience for lunch today! A truly exceptional wine list, which reads more like a novel. And outstanding service from our sommelier. We had many dim sum dishes, the platter of steamed dim sum, duck pancakes, Hong Kong noodles, pork belly, and steamed vegetables. We also had lots of dessert! The mango pudding was very popular at our table. The send out dish of the day was the Hong Kong noodles which was recommended by the team. We also ordered chicken that had exceptional crispiness!

I ve eaten at a fair few Merivale restaurants now and this one lacked. the crab was 210 dollars a kilo and it was so hard to get out of the shell, very very over cooked! Almost Like it was pre cooked and then covered in sauce. Little disappointed as Mimi s and Bert s weren t like that at all. For the money you expect a little better. The service wasn t great either forgotten drink, forgot to bring steamed rice to the table. Again disappointing as their other venues are usually always great.

Go to the walk-in around 8 oclock, put up a waiting list, and check in at 9 oclock. All the staff in charge were very friendly. Google says it closes at 22:00, but the kitchen closes at 22:00! A lot of people came even after 9 oclock. Dim sum plate, shrimp wonton, fried eggplant Dim sum - moist and delicious!!! Seasoning is appropriate. Shrimp Wonton - Its not big and feels like a soup bowl for one person. The broth is rich and the shrimp wontons are delicious, but the broth has a strong shrimp broth flavor so it can feel like a foul smell. The soup is salty. Fried eggplant - crispy on the outside, soft as butter on the inside, more portion than expected, sprinkled with cilantro and seasoned just right! It feels greasy when you eat it, but it is delicious.

I have been fortunate to eat and Mr Wong a few times, although not since pre-covid, so was quite pleased to head back with colleagues during a conference stay in the CBD. We agreed to order a dish each to share. Im unsure if theres a better way to go about things at Mr Wong as youll likely want to eat quite a few dishes particularly if you dont want to stretch to the banquet. We started with Duck Pancakes. I always have high expectations for duck as its not always cooked to my preference. Mr Wongs duck is perfection! Not too fatty. Succulent. Delicious. I could just fill up on the pancakes! We then shared kung pao chicken and sweet/sour pork. Im not a huge fan of chilli, so I tasted a small serve of the kung pao chicken which was okay. The pork was sensational! Being a hatted restaurant, the s/s pork does not look like what you probably order from your local Chinese take away. Nor does it taste the same. I can confidently say, for the record, that it is the BEST pork Ive had. I was delicious. Id go back just for that, We ate all of this with special fried rice - and surprisingly made do with just a small serve. I was happy to order a mocktail - some lychee concoction which was sweet but refreshing. My only qualm - the ambience is really dark. I had trouble reading the menu!

A friend and I visited this restaurant and enjoyed the food. We had the $118 (per person) Banquet + was left full, content + leftovers. Generous portions + flavoursome. Unfortunately, the service itself was incredibly disappointing. Despite organising the night myself, staff did not acknowledge me (only my friend) the whole night minus ordering our meal at the beginning. I am disabled but surely that couldn t be the reason The banquet was extensive and empty plates were left on the table while new plates were brought out + placed on the edges of the table (for us to try to manouvre the plate placement so nothing spilled or fell). We had to ask for the empty plates to be removed. One attendant was continually touching his hair as it was falling into his face whilst distributing food. At the end of the night when my friend + I split the bill evenly, this same attendant laughed in my face when I asked why the bill wasn t split evenly when it was my turn to pay (I was second). I believe he thought I was joking or didn t understand + only responded with I don t know between laughs. I was left speechless. When coming to a beautiful, quality restaurant like Mr Wong (the fit out is stunning) it s only natural to expect a quality experience. Again, the food was great + for that aspect alone I recommend. However, I couldn t believe how collectively the staff seemed unprofessional, offensive + oblivious. I hope they can work on that aspect as the food is worth going for.

Its a beautiful space and a busy, buzzing vibe. The food is good. We had the $140 per person set menu which should have been great but the kitchens dont coordinate the orders, so all the food comes out at the same time and you are forced to eat it all before it gets cold. We were in and out in an hour! Its a real shame because this should have been an epic experience but it felt like a churn and burn. This style of service is OK if you are paying fast food prices but not when you are paying a premium. Sadly probably would not go back again. Value for money 1 star.

Dim sum is absolutely delicious! Even though I ate it at a famous Chinese restaurant in Korea, it tasted better here. The garlic rice isnt bad, but it has a seafood flavor, so if you dont like the smell of seafood at all, its probably better not to eat it. Please keep in mind that the eggplant fries are slightly sour, almost like yusanseul. Still, I enjoyed it. But I dont know if its just a coincidence or a coincidence, but why do they only show Asian people to the inner corner? I suddenly felt it and looked around on my way out, but there were only Asians in the corner. I hope it was a coincidence ^^; And there were so many people that it was noisy, so it was hard to hear what the other person was saying.

Overall, just a disappointment Food 4 stars (the taste has to be a little better for this price level) and location itself 5 stars but the volume is almost at the level of a disco and there is also quite loud rock and roll music, unbelievable. Far too many small (bistro) tables, placed so closely that the waiters almost cant put the dishes down or constantly bump into the chair when they walk past. Service lousy: table wasnt ready despite reservation (not possible at the price level), you wait at the side in the hectic coming and going, no apology at the door. Hardly any advice when ordering, it seems to be primarily about maximizing the waste. Main course was served even though we hadnt eaten the soups yet. Side dish only after the main course with the reason that the (bistro) table was too small...... Maybe okay for a younger audience, but for people who want to spend a stylish, cozy evening, we strongly advise against it!!! Its a shame and it was completely different about 10 years ago

20 minutes despite reservation. Waited until you were mercifully allowed to come to the table... although many tables were free and remained free!!!! The food was served incomplete. Service like in a student dorm, no plan when asked about the menu. The duck was very good, the side dishes were more than poor. The gastronomy is beautifully designed, but the atmosphere is a disaster!!! The loudspeakers are booming: Elvis Presly!!!! Added to this is the babble of voices from the guests, who have to talk to each other loudly in order to be able to have a conversation at the table Its extremely loud!!!! STRESSFUL! Not recommended, even if the duck is good. Other Asians in Sydney can do this too The price-performance ratio is far from right. Completely overpriced, almost ridiculous! The service was terrible from start to finish. Student level! Never again!

Typing this as I go while dining at Mr. Wong. I made the big mistake of showing up by myself, Chinese restaurants are not meant to be for solo dinners... However I heard great things from this place and had to try it while visiting Sydney. To my luck I was greeted by a really good hostess (I work in the industry and I can appreciate a good hosting job) and was advised on how to work around the menu in order to better experience it. That interaction alone started off the night on the right track! Then I was sat at the bar, I get it, Im a solo diner, no problem. It was a bustling Saturday night service, the kitchen was in the weeds swamped in tickets giving me a whole show, but then I realized that it had been almost 15 minutes and not single one of the suited servers that were talking to each other noticed I was waiting for them (how the tables have turned) finally one noticed and approached me, with the same friendliness and openness as the hostesses. Now I wait for my reduced sized portions to arrive while enjoying the show from the swinging woks and the voicing from the expo calling out the tickets. I also noticed that they probably need more bussers, a lot of dirty tables and floors around, which I dont think is quite good for a restaurant on this level but thats another story. The food arrives! Aaaand the order is Mr. wRong. I send it back and then I waited for someone to come back and reassure me that itll be fixed for a bit and a couple minutes later I was finally able to start tasting whats this place all about. Holy crab! The fried rice was spectacular, so good that I just went through it forgetting that I have limited space in my stomach and it was already limited due to the Kung Pao Chicken that made it to my table before the rice that was pretty good as well. Halfway through my dinner a suited gentleman greeted me and gave me that warm Aussie friendliness that I love so much and even more in a hospitality setting, made things better, again. Overall it was an amazing meal, a kitchen shows its true colors when its the busiest and they didnt disappoint! However, as far as service goes, protocol was out of tune (dirty tables, long wait times to be served, wait staff non-present in general and dirty restrooms) aside from the protocol, the genuine hospitality was there. A couple more hands and a more focused front of the house staff would make this experience way better.

November 23, 2024

The worst experience ever. Called these guys to make a booking for a Friday night and were told that walk ins are welcome. Came at 8pm were told to wait at the bar and the next table was available at 9pm, waited at the bar for 1 hour and 30 min only to be told that a table at the bar is all they had, or we could wait for a table in 45 minutes. We asked them why wouldn t they tell us this at the beginning , the manager then proceeded to find a solution let me send you some dumplings your way while you wait we thought he meant complimentary to make up for the wait , so we stayed , we ordered more food but when the bill came they ended up charging us for the dumplings, and refused to take it off the bill.

Some of the worst service I have ever experienced. Despite having a booking and having noted it was our anniversary, our table was not ready. After waiting 10 minutes we were shoved into a table near the entrance, we asked to move. After eventually being seated, the manager did not apologise, instead tried to upsell us to a margarita. When we said we would like to look at the menu, no one returned to take our drinks order for more than 20 minutes. Some of our food never arrived. Truly an atrocious experience, am so upset that our anniversary was tainted by this.

We ordered the banquet set menu which was absolutely delicious. All the food was cooked perfectly and the amount of food you get was insane for the price you pay. We left feeling stuffed The only issue we had was that sometimes there would be massive wait times between each dish coming out from the set menu. Also, when we were seated we were asked if we wanted sparkling or still water. We said we wanted still. We didn t realise this meant we would get a $14 charge at the end of dinner for a bottle of water. I feel like this should ve been mentioned at the start before we ordered the still water.

Fantastic food and fantastic service. Finally got the chance to dine in at Mr Wong s and it did not disappoint. Their selection of dumplings and dim sims is an absolute treat definitely a must try. Highlights for me was the lobster, beautifully cooked and the e-fu noodles accompanied it well with their xo sauce. Will definitely be coming back to try the other menu items.

Cleared away our food before we were finished and despite booking in advance, the table wasn t ready when we arrived. Food was alright. Too big a space with too many tables for it to feel atmospheric - just felt crowded and commercial.

My partner and I flew up to Sydney from Melbourne for a few days, I made a reservation for his birthday here, hoping it would be a highlight of our trip and was super dissapointed by our experience. We literally had to hail down a waiter so we could ask for water & order our food even though I specified which banquet I was after in our reservation notes. The waiter was not discreet about pricing. We ordered the banquet and were served by so many different waiters. This would be fine if there werent communication problems within FOH, and between FOH & BOH - unsure if its a management problem. We received the dishes out of order and they actually forgot one of our courses and I had to ask whether it had been taken off the menu, it hadnt - they just forgot. And then 2 of the same dish they forgot came out - after dessert? The staff were friendly but our expectations were not met. This place is fine to dine casually at, but not for a special occassion which is surprising considering we sank a couple hundred dollars here. The food was nothing to call home about - fusiony/inauthentic, forgettable food. Im honestly writing this review more than 4 months after we dined here because thats how terrible of an impression it made on me. Will have to make it up to my partner next year.

Mr Wong - Palmer & Co. I get it! I m the duck Checking the bill: dinner for two, sitting at the bar, two cocktails. The bartender slides over the card machine, asking for a tip. I give him a 5% tip because I feel like I m supposed to, though maybe it s too low . I don t know . I m Italian . I m not used to paying for something twice. Anyway, who and what am I tipping for? Is it for the whole staff because of the service? We arrive at 8 p.m., two people, no reservation. You tell us to come back in an hour and a half. So we go next door to Palmer & Co. for a drink. Two cocktails at the bar, no seats, no food included. The bartender slides the card machine, showing the tip options. I give him a 5% tip while wondering why they don t just raise the prices on the cocktail menu, and then I remind myself that they re already pretty expensive . I order a New York-style hot dog, cold bread . Lucky me, this time the waitress doesn t ask for a tip, which might have actually been deserved since she brought the food to me. - Am I getting used to this, tipping someone just for doing their job? - Finally, a text message arrives - our table is ready. Technically, it s not a table; it s a spot at the kitchen bar, right by the show cooking , with all the smells . Wait, no, the floor manager decides to upgrade us to a better spot, downstairs at the bar. But this still isn t a table-it s a bar seat, with a view of the bartenders doing their thing . The A/C is blasting behind us , and they re pouring us San Pellegrino (zip code 24016, BG, Italy) sparkling water in Sydney just because we re Italian. - I do love sparkling water, but it doesn t make sense to me to pay $18 for it. Ever heard of sparkling water makers? - I think we ordered too much: one plate of dim sum (eight pieces) and two noodle dishes (and they don t serve small portions of noodles). Maybe the bartender, who also took our order, could have anticipated this when we said we were medium hungry. As far as I understand, Merivale is a company with properties in entertainment and hospitality that owns both Mr. Wong and Palmer & Co. I discovered they re actually connected by a door downstairs. It felt like I was part of a well-organized assembly line. The quality of the food and drinks was good, and the meals were well-cooked. The ventilation downstairs was decent too. Overall, my experience at Mr. Wong and Palmer & Co felt like one of those well-run, mid-sized tourist tours I ve sometimes attended during my journey across Australia a really beautiful and charming country, populated by welcoming, kind and hospitable people - But I won t be back, and I wouldn t recommend it.

My friend has to ask him when his glass empty, then he pour wine second time. There are still 1/3 of bottle of wine left. The waiter did not return the bottle to us, he put it back to the bar. At the end of the night, that waiter left before we left. And we ask for our bottle, all other staff did not know and could not find our bottle located anywhere. If you read Xiaohongshu and want to come and eat, stay here. First of all, don t order Peking duck. There s nothing wrong with the sauce, but the dough is so thick that I choked on my neck after one bite. The duck was all meat without a few pieces of delicious skin. It was so unpalatable that I still remember it. . The beef tartare with fried dough sticks in the picture also tastes average, the fried dough sticks are quite crispy. The barbecued pork is so fishy, dont order it as it looks like a wild boar is running around in your mouth. The stir-fried vegetables are delicious, the fish and oysters are okay, and the blue cocktail is just okay. Everything else was of no avail, the food was not worth the price, and the environment was noisy. The waiters probably didn t have their own tables. It took me a long time to wait for someone, and it took a long time to get a bowl. I said I forgot about the last one, and it took me two to pay. We came a second time, and the only thing worthy of praise is that we were seated very quickly, but we had reserved a seat, and it was normal for us to be seated when we arrived. If you just want to check in and take a photo, you can give it a try. If you just want to come here for the delicious food, think twice.

My girlfriends and I dined at Mr Wong for a late lunch. We were immediately welcomed by friendly staff and their hospitality was just outstanding! As soon as you walked in, the vibe was great though I recommend having more lighting inside. It was a wee bit dark and I had to use my phone torch to look at the menu. Our drinks didnt take too long to arrive and our entrees were served immediately after. The kingfish and mixed steamed dumplings were superb! We had fried rice, Kung Pao chicken, steamed greens and fried chicken and cannot fault anything! All tasted delicious and the flavours were astounding! On the pricey side and we ended up paying about $110 each (4 diners) including 4 cocktails which isnt too bad if paying individually. Though as a family and for that amount of $$ you could easily spend far less with more food (including seafood such as lobster) at another Chinese restaurant in the suburbs like Burwood, Cabramatta, Ashfield... We had one of the best experiences at Mr Wong - the food, atmosphere and the service was top notch. Cant fault it!

October 23, 2024

Has dropped significantly in quality over the past 5 years. Food was forgettable and way overpriced. The pork buns and sampling of different dumplings were nothing special. The crab noodles were terrible - just a plate of tasteless noodles. The half peking duck was nice but again nothing that you can t get from many other restaurants at ½ the price. $36 for a small plate of broccolini is extortionate. This place definitely no longer deserves the hype. Save your money and go else where for the same - if not better - quality.

We finally made it down to Mr Wong! Ambience was really nice ,the lighting was a little dim though which made it a bit hard to read the menu. So we ordered the below dishes, and also the fried rice with shrimp only , (gf option) This dish had nice wok hei! They were really on it with the gluten free options , but couldn t help myself so ate some pork belly . I have lived in Hong Kong and eaten some gorgeous Cantonese fare there . The dishes we sampled at Mr Wong were very tasty and delicious , just like in Hong Kong . The hotpot of mushrooms dish was a little salty , but yum nevertheless . I thought the tofu would be braised and soft , but the hotpot was very textural with the hard tofu . The pork belly was beautiful. The seafood hotpot was perfectly cooked - scallops were delicious . However, this dish could have had a little more punch and kick with ie chilli or garlic or some heat . The service was humble and super friendly and very well orchestrated . Numerous staff attended our table , and they were super efficient and genuine . Casual but relaxing vibe . Highly recommend!

Fantastic atmosphere, though a bit crowded, which is a testament to the quality of their Asian cuisine some of the best I ve experienced in Sydney. The restaurant boasts a charming vintage decor, and the staff are exceptionally friendly, offering excellent recommendations on dishes and portion sizes. Finding the restaurant can be a bit challenging due to limited signage and its location in a side lane.

Tried the place today on a friend s recommendation on an early Sunday night. - Got seated at the bar even though I was surrounded by empty tables. I requested to be moved because I was cramped and servers were swishing past me ( the stool I was seated on was in the way) and I was told the other empty tables had prior reservations ( however no other guests had arrived till the end of the meal) so nothing was done. - Never had a server - the bartender helped us out throughout the meal. - The food was very high in salt. I drank the hot and sour soup down with sprite because of that. If I wanted to eat salty food with no service cramped on a bar stool I would not have come to a sit down restaurant with fine dining prices. I love Sydney but this experience was a low point.

I was really looking forward to this after reading the reviews and hearing from others who have been here before. We booked ahead but could only get a late sitting (NP). About half of the dishes in our set menu were good. A quarter were ordinary (one was awful), and a quarter were sublimely good. It is noisy and cramped (np). I was expecting this as it has such a good rep. We were not treated like we were paying over 130 per head. We were rushed. I wanted to savour every course, but it was impossible at the rate they were coming out. At one point, one observant (and lovely) waiter came to the table and asked if we would like it to slow down, and we said yes gratefully. Then, less than 2 minutes later, another course landed on the table. The decor is top shelf. It is an amazing building and set up. I noticed that the people that had ordered of the menu were having a nicer time, so if I decide to go again, that is what I would do. I think that the set menus are their money makers and rather than showcasing their range of amazing food thay are achieving the opposite. And alienating people at the same time. We get it. You dont need us.
